"...the right kind of love, the kind that’s real... that sacrifices... that kind of love doesn’t blind you. It actually helps you see.” --Avatar: North & South
Personal Note--
You know, putting everything else aside-- and by everything, I mean every bit of color symbolism, every mythological parallel, every meaningful exchange of dialogue, every aesthetically and narratively beautiful reason that keeps us fans rooting for Zuko and Katara to fall in love in our own HeadCanon-- there still is no way for me to dismiss that a friendship between them was the best thing that could’ve ever happened to them.
I see them as characters in Season 1 and how their story arcs progress through the end of Season 3, and I see how one’s world could not fully be “complete” without understanding the other’s. I see the two of them, standing side-by-side as the Avatar’s greatest allies in a new era of peace... a position that could’ve worked *wonders* for these two as warriors, leaders, confidantes, and yes... perhaps eventually lovers.
When Zuko was helping Katara in the “Southern Raiders” episode, he didn’t know what his life would look like after Sozen’s Comet. He didn’t know that his uncle would vouch for him to become the new Fire Lord and fight Azula to claim the throne; in my mind, Zuko must’ve been so detached from the Fire Nation by that point in the show that he’d swear never to return unless the Avatar himself requested it. Katara also didn’t know what the future held for her after the Comet, but she was certain about her destiny to be with the Avatar. (This is not about romance, necessarily -- it’s about faith, loyalty, and dedication to bringing something back in the world that’s been long-forgotten, watching it take shape again through hope.) Katara is essentially a miracle-worker and an advocate for change that would influence the world... including the Fire Nation.
Zuko would’ve been greatly inspired by Katara’s passion, and Katara would’ve been just as inspired by Zuko’s courage to trade his newfound freedom for a crown, trading his old life of duty and war for a new life of service and peace.
With this mutual respect and understanding -- and with all of their past animosity behind them -- there’s no doubt in my mind that Zuko and Katara would’ve become so much closer after Sozin’s Comet. It doesn’t matter that Zuko ends up becoming FireLord and Katara remains at Aang’s side at the end of the show, because they would’ve come to terms with their greater purpose in life: helping the Avatar. Their bond would remain, despite one always traveling to assist the Avatar and her homeland in the SWT, the other mostly staying within the Fire Nation to restructure government and mend international relations after a century of war.
I don’t want to dismiss Aang as a viable romantic candidate for Katara, because the show does demonstrate that he and Katara grow very close from all of their time together. Still, from how I see him through the end of the show, Aang’s maturity level is not at Katara’s, they never really had a heart-to-heart about their feelings beyond friendship, and while Aang seems to still depend on her at times of need... it’s never the other way around... nor is he willing to face Katara’s darkest moments. Zuko understands Katara’s dark side and her anger, and he has the same level of maturity. Their trust was developed so deeply and quickly that they were willing to go to battle together and risk their lives for the other. For me, the sense of understanding that Zuko and Katara demonstrated as friends was more powerful than what Aang and Katara shared as a potential romantic couple... and looking it long-term, I would see Zuko and Katara getting closer, unless Aang does some major “growing up” with his Avatar duties and learns to be self-sufficient.
In my HeadCanon... despite the awkwardness that might occur with Aang always having a “thing” for Katara, I think he would realize that what Zuko and Katara have is incomparable, and he would eventually step aside and let destiny do its thing. Zuko and Katara would grow up counseling each other in their roles... and I believe it’s through that friendship and that dedication to helping the Avatar that they would become each other’s partner though life.
It’s foolish to say that all of this wouldn’t be lovely potential for a romance.

"We've created an era of fear in the world. And if we don't want the world to destroy itself, we need to replace it with an era of peace and kindness."
Once a banished prince, Zuko has risen from the ashes to become the Fire Lord. Growing up, he was a disappointment to his father, something he was told regularly while being compared to his child prodigy of a sister. After his mother’s disappearance, the treatment only grew worse. For speaking up in a war meeting on behalf of nameless soldiers, he was burned by his father and banished with an impossible task. Anger consumed him for years as he hunted the Avatar, but once the illusion of returning home had shattered, that anger turned into the fire behind his passion. With the war over, the throne fell to Zuko, a position he holds with caution. He refuses to let anyone suffer at the hands of the Fire Nation again.
”Fire is a weapon that can tear everything down, but it’s also something that keeps people warm. That’s...Well, I want the Fire Nation to be like that. I want to help.”

Convince Your Sleepy Head That You're Not Tired

by AwkwardTurtleducks
Once Zuko got home and his phone was charged enough, though, he found that she had sent a picture to the group chat with Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph of him. All curled up in Suki’s bed, burrowed up to his chin under the covers, fast asleep, mouth slightly open and hair all messy falling over his face.
A litany of ‘aww’s and comparisons to cute animals followed and his mortification was washed away by a sudden butterflies in his stomach, heart pounding against his chest, breathless in the best way possible sort of feeling when he saw Sokka’s messages arguing with Aang that Zuko was much cuter than Appa.
So maybe he had a little bit of a crush on Sokka. He could accept that. Sokka was attractive and sweet and funny and incredibly smart. It was bound to happen sooner or later.
He’d get over it soon. It’s not like he was falling in love with his friend - not with everything else going on in his life.
At least that’s what he told himself.
----OR----
Suki finds out that Zuko hasn't been taking care of himself after he falls asleep during class and takes it upon herself to feed him and make him sleep.

"what you do to one side, you do to the other! Simple as that!"
Sokka is checking over the closed captions, ensuring each word is correct for his hard of hearing and deaf audience. When he is satisfied, he adds a few hashtags such as #math #algebra #tutoring #basingseu and #mathdoesnthavetobehard before posting.
He starts scrolling through his For You Page, alternating between it and his friend's videos. His favorite one thus far was of his close friends Aang, Ty Lee, and Jet doing parkour. Leaping and bounding from one end of a city block to the other, scaling building at record speed with flips and twists that Sokka knew himself to be incapable of.
Then there was a video of his best friend Suki, going around the city and teaching random girls on the street martial arts and self defense moves in an attempt to get the girls to attend her classes. It usually worked, from what he'd seen, but Sokka didn't believe that to be because of Suki's knowledge so much as her bulging biceps and sharp jaw. Anytime she approached an unsuspecting femme, the women would stop dead, staring at Suki like they couldn't believe someone such as her was talking to someone such as them. She would oftentimes demonstrate on another friend or ask the women's permission to demonstrate on them. When all was said and done, the women were red faced and giggly and Sokka just knew they asked for Suki's number for reasons other than martial arts.
A notification bar pops up in red and white at the bottom right hand side of the screen and Sokka clicks it, allowing it to take him to the activity feed. There's a new comment on his post from awkwardturtleduck8 and Sokka has half the mind to wonder if there were seven other awkwardturtleducks roaming the site, or if the commenter just really liked the number eight.
awkwardturtleduck8: ty ty I would b so lost w/out it
And Sokka realizes, looking further back through his other posts, that awkwardturtleduck8 has liked nearly everyone of his mathematics tiktoks. They must really be struggling.
And Sokka, bored out of his mind and looking for some entertainment decides to click on the commenter's profile. Their photo didn't give anything about them away, it being strictly of a turtleduck. Sokka regrets his decision almost as soon as it's made.
He scrolls through their - no - his TikTok page for a long while. Watching video after video of arguably the sexiest man Sokka has ever see, except that he doesn't see the man's face in any of the videos. Just the lower half of his body and if it isn't scrumptious. Lean lines, hard edges, and muscle. All muscle. Toned arms, thick legs, and his back oh spirits he's hot.
The man is an athlete, and not just any athlete, a fire bender. His tiktoks consist solely of firebending forms and educational videos on how to handle various different swords and other weaponry. His camera always cuts off just at the neck, but it isn't like he needs to show his face to teach people the proper placement of their hands on a sword or their feet for a bending form. It also isn't like he needs a face to be attractive with a body like that and a voice like his, low and soothing.
So, Sokka makes a decision, bold and impulsive, he slides into the dm's.
sokkalogical: maybe I can offer you some one on one tutoring lessons, y'know? ;)
A few short minutes later, he receives a response.
awkwardturtleduck8: omg that would b great
Well, that was easy.
sokkalogical: do you study at ba sing se?
He's already confident the answer is yes, considering some of the guy's TikToks have been filmed on campus grounds, in areas Sokka is far too familiar with.
awkwardturtleduck8: yeah
Perfect.
sokkalogical: on or off campus
awkwardturtleduck8: on
Even more perfect.
Sokka gives the mathmatically challenged man his dorm building and number with a flirtatious come find me ;)
Less than thirty minutes later there is at knock at his door, and Sokka can't help but think, once again, that this was easy. Perhaps a little too easy, but one shouldn't question a gift from the spirits and this opportunity? It's a gift.
Sokka opens the door to find a boy, nearly the same height as he, standing there with eyes like amber and hair as black and as shiny as a perfectly tumbled piece of obsidian pulled half up on his head, holding a text book with the most desperate of expressions on his face.
"Please help,"
And there it is. This isn't easy. Sokka isn't lucky, and the man before him most certainly isn't a gift from the spirits.
He's a spirits-damned curse, but Sokka is nothing if not one with a hero complex. Unable to ignore a damsel in distress, he steps aside, allowing the disheveled student into his dormitory.
With either no sense of dignity, or maybe too desperate to care, the man plops down in the middle of Sokka's dorm, throwing open his textbook to the current chapter in his algebra course. Sokka takes a less than graceful seat across from him, his eyes trained on the boy's face, more specifically the scar peaking out beneath a bit of hair covering his left eye.
"What do you need help with?" Sokka finally asks,
The boy turns the book to him, and in the most flustered manner says,
"Everything,"
Everything is correct.
The worst part of tutoring has always been trying to figure out how much of a subject his clients don't know, but this man - Zuko, as he calls himself - doesn't know what he doesn't know. It's infuriating to say the least, and Sokka finds himself asking,
"You aren't majoring in a mathematics course are you?" Much to Sokka's benefit, Zuko is not. Much to Sokka's dismay, he's hopeless. Utterly hopeless.
He spends nearly an hour trying to go over the most remedial of algebraic equations before taking Zuko's textbook, closing it, and slamming it into his own forehead.
"You're so fucking stupid," Sokka mutters as he pulls the book away from his face, "how do you not know any of this?"
"I was homeschooled...poorly," Zuko admits, not bothering to acknowledge Sokka's comment on his intelligence. "If you can't help me, I'll find someone else. I can't fail this course again," and it is the again that has Sokka's ears perking. That, and the desperation laced in Zuko's tone, like it would absolutely be the end of the world if he failed this course. Again.
"I'll make you a deal," Sokka decides as an ache begins to form in his temples and whether it's from his own abuse of his cranium, or Zuko's inability to understand algebra, he isn't sure.
"A deal?" Zuko asks, a puzzled look forming on his face and by the spirits if he isn't cute. A little stupid maybe, but cute.
"A deal," Sokka confirms,
Zuko gestures with his hand for Sokka to proceed, "I'll do your maths homework, but you have to buy me dinner."
"How do you expect me to pass an exam?"
"You've got Gaoku as your professor, her exams are all online. Any time you want me to do your maths, or take an exam for you, you owe me a date,"
It isn't his best moment, but it is better than the alternative which is Sokka losing his sanity trying to teach this man literally anything. Some people just aren't good at maths, and that's okay. However, the people that aren't good at maths are usually teachable from a certain point in their coursework.
Zuko doesn't know any of it. Not a damn thing, and it would take Sokka literal months of teaching for him to catch Zuko up to where he needs to be in order to pass his class. He doesn't have the patience, let alone the time, so Sokka figures a free meal and a hot date is his best alternative. That is, until Zuko wrinkles his nose and tears his textbook from Sokka's grasp.
"I don't want people to do the work for me, I want to be able to do it myself thank you very much," the low vibrato of his voice, the last few syllables dripping with annoyance, and his hardened stare, all of these things had Sokka's palms sweating and his heart rate turn to something erratic. "Name your price,"
"What?" Sokka blinks,
"Name your price. What will it take to get you to teach me?"
Not very much, apparently.
"Teach me how to use a sword, and I'll teach you how to pass this course."
"It's a deal," Zuko extends his hand to Sokka, and Sokka takes it. This is going to be a long, long semester.
Sokka having a tiktok where he explains math questions and equations and he gets a message one day from gay disaster Zuko who is like ‘ty ty I am so lost without you’ and Sokka is having a meltdown on the inside because this boy is so cute so he’s like maybe I can offer u some one on one tutoring lessons y’know;) and Zuko is like oh man yes pls. So they meet up but Zuko actually brings his math shit and Sokka sits down with him and is like holy shit this man (this super fucking hot man) can not solve a math problem to save his life and by hour two he’s like ffs can we just go on a date I have a migraine

This House of Mine Stands Strong

by AwkwardTurtleducks
Zuko slipped on the green cloak hanging from the bedpost, thankful now more than ever that even nearly nine months pregnant he didn’t have a huge baby bump. Figure distorted and pregnancy hidden underneath the thick, flowing fabric.
Ice cold fear flooded his veins when he heard Suki shout a warning to Sokka and the sounds of fighting in the hallway right outside their room. He grabbed his sheathed dao swords and slung them over his shoulder before hurrying to open the hidden door in the closet, hesitating when he heard Sokka cry out in pain.
Every nerve, vein, and muscle in his body was screaming at him to run to his husband. Help him. Protect him.
But a little kick reminded him why he couldn’t do that despite how absolutely, utterly wrong it felt to ignore Sokka’s pain and slip away to the twisting maze of dimly lit secret passageways instead.

Now Sokka was just sitting in his car in front of the hospital, hands gripping the steering wheel despite being parked, staring unseeingly through the windshield. He knew he had to go back in. Zuko was waiting for him so they could go meet their daughter.
Anyways, he had only left so he could change from his blood-soaked clothes but now he just couldn’t get himself to go back inside. Frozen, thinking about all the moments leading up to now. Honestly terrified of seeing what sort of condition the baby was in and even more terrified of the conversation that would follow.
Sokka was not ready to be a father.
Yet, at the same time, the thought of giving up their daughter was accompanied by the rather unpleasant feeling of rusty nails being driven through his heart.
The shrill sound of his phone ringing startled Sokka out of his thoughts, heart racing and hands trembling as he fumbled to grab it and look to see who was calling.
It was his dad.
Shit.

Someday You'll Find Me On Top of the World
read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/3leuH2q
by AwkwardTurtleducks
At a routine checkup, Zuko finds out he's pregnant. Which is utterly baffling considering he's never had sex - at least not penetrative sex. He'd been very clear with Jet that he just wasn't comfortable with it and maybe Jet could be a little pushy sometimes but he would back off if Zuko said 'no' enough.
There were a few drunken nights that Zuko couldn't quite remember... But Jet wouldn't, would he?
No, Zuko was sure his boyfriend wouldn't do that to him.
Except he did. There was no other explanation for the pregnancy and while blood tests might get mixed up, ultrasounds don't lie. Neither does the way Jet's face drains of color as he tries to stammer out excuses when Zuko confronts him.
Left feeling utterly broken, violated, and drowning in regret with several difficult decisions to make, Zuko has no idea what to do.
Luckily he has some amazing friends and perhaps the best Uncle in the world on his side ready to support him through whatever choices he makes.
Their love and support doesn't erase all of the pain, anger, and anxiety that he feels but knowing he's not alone gives Zuko the strength to keep going despite it all.

Wrong Side of Myself

“Are you like… having second-thoughts?” Sokka asked gently and the look Zuko gave him confirmed that - shocked, but resigned. Like he just couldn’t believe that Sokka guessed it correctly on the first try.
“I just… I guess I never actually thought about it, y’know?” Zuko said, shaking his head and hugging his knees tighter to his chest. “Like… people found out I was pregnant and the first question was always ‘are you keeping it?’ and I didn’t know what to say! And then I ended up saying ‘yes’ once on impulse because I panicked but then everyone was so excited about it and… I don’t know,” Zuko groaned, burying his face against his knees. “Isn’t it weird? To want to keep my rapist’s baby?”
----OR----
It really was foolish of Zuko to think he could focus on math when his first prenatal appointment was just around the corner and he couldn't help the doubts and worries swirling in his mind while poor Sokka is trying fruitlessly to explain statistics to him.
Good thing Sokka is an amazing friend that's not only good at math, but also at calming Zuko's racing mind and knowing exactly what to say when his friend is on the verge of a mental breakdown.

“What the fuck do you mean there’s ‘no proof’? I’m fucking pregnant, that’s not proof?!” Zuko shouted, clutching the phone tighter and trying not to let the tears burning his eyes fall. “Fuck it - Fine! If you don’t think you could win this fucking case I guess that shows more about your abilities as a shit-ass lawyer, doesn’t it? Fucking useless - Augh!” Zuko roared, a burst of fire coming from his throat as he threw his phone hard against the wall when he was hung up on.
“...Another no?”
Aang’s soft, tentative voice came from the doorway connecting the kitchen where Zuko was to the living room where the rest of their friends were waiting for the verdict.
----OR----
Zuko is struggling to come to terms with the fact that the justice system is absolutely terrible and that his ex-boyfriend may just get away with what he did.

Blindsided on an Idle Tuesday

“Hey, sunshine,” Sokka managed, voice cracking a little, as those beautiful brown eyes he loved so much finally opened to stare up at him.
“Hi,” Zuko muttered, raspy and quiet and confused. His eyes widened as they trailed down to stare at the blood stains splotched all over Sokka’s hoodie and jeans. “W-what… happened?”
“You… Um…” Sokka hesitated, swallowing audibly and trying to discreetly wipe away the tears rolling down his cheeks. “You… had a baby. In our bathroom,” he managed with a disbelieving laugh that came out as more of a sob. “And then - then…” Sokka’s words were thick and a struggle to get out around the lump in his throat. “Y-You almost… b-bled out,” he managed shakily, sniffling softly as the adrenaline started to wear down and a myriad of feelings started to seep in.

Convince Your Sleepy Head That You're Not Tired
by AwkwardTurtleducks
So maybe Zuko had a little bit of a crush on Sokka.
(Part of a series but reading the other parts isn't strictly necessary.)

Blindsided on an Idle Tuesday
by AwkwardTurtleducks

Wrong Side of Myself
by AwkwardTurtleducks
