MARDI 4 AOUT 2020 – (Billet 2/2)

“Adrift in Batavia”
“When I am inside writing, all I can do is think about how I should be outside living
When I can outside living, all I can do is notice all there is to write about..”
-Sarah Kay, “Paradox”
I.
Early October. I was in Humboldt Colectivo once again in pursuit
of getting some writing done. Laptop, composition notebooks, a spill of highlighters,
pens, and Sharpies on the table.- I get a Facebook message from my new friend, Megan
asking, Did you want to drive up north to go grape-picking after my photo shoot?
I was so flattered, a YES was the only appropriate answer.
1:25pm was what my laptop's right hand clock read when she came
in a cherry top beret, overalls and baby-face smile. Megan's light blue Volkswagen beetle
parked out front matched her personality so well.- I grabbed a granola bar out
the car trunk in a light blue-white polka dotted backpack she offered and we were off.
A dash onto the ashen streets as Creme City's autumnal glow blinded us.
Vermillion, canary and marmalade.
Small talk sparked, specifically about her, a soon to be married woman from
China, Maine, I, an inner city Milwaukee Native. Somehow our connection was poetry. -
Car radio tuned to 103.7 Kiss F.M played a poppy tune. We were at one point
singing Avril Lavigne and Michelle Branch songs; Sk8r Boy, Complicated
and Goodbyyyye to Youu-ahh-ooo! - The car wheels' perpetual rotation on the rippleless
highway was concrete jazz. - The fall countryside was magical with all the trees'
motley hues viscerally going past our window. A perennial pathway
ahead forever changed by the sway of vehicular movement.
II.
Megan wanted to know what car fits my personality. I sight referenced
cars whisking by in both traffic lanes, and picked a purple Jeep with a little dirt the wheels. -
She handed me instructions to the farm written on a single index card. A cluster of
parabolic lines and arrows, county road names and numbers in gel pen. We passed through
the municipals of Cedarburg, Grafton, Random Lake, Port Washington, and a couple
unincorporated places as the green roadside signs read.
We were lost for a couple of hours. No worries. Our misdirection intensified
the anticipation. U-turn after U-turn, passed red barn after red barn, Trump sign after
Trump sign made us sigh. The ubiquitous sight of Guernsey cows and golden horses ate grass
behind high fences. A Confederate flag symbolically said to us, You are not in the city anymore.
A road named Indian Mound next to a grassy field whispered secrets of a spiritual
but dark past. A roadkill raccoon with its insides bloodied and smeared on the yellow
lines said, Welcome to the country...
We called a guy named Bill Wilmot as it appeared on Megan's fancy phone.
The third call went straight to voice mail. Megan assumed he was probably to busy
picking grapes like we should be doing. Ugh!
III.
A town of Adell Mini Mart slash Mobile gas station off 57 was where we
finally stopped for directions. A nice brunette behind the cashier counter, ripped off
a blank receipt and wrote down new instructions. - I bought a 89 cent bag of Uncle Ray's
Cheddar & Sour Cream potato chips in the meanwhile. Slid my dollar on the counter.
Then went outside, cracked open the chips, leaned against a wooden post
and listened to autumn sing.
I came back in, walked pass all the cardboard cases of Miller Highlight
and Coors into the surprisingly clean Men's bathroom for a piss, and to get a mirror image
of my fine new haircut. - I was tempted to buy one of the huge cheap slices of fudge cake.
They costed one-seventy-five and were the size of my HEAD!...Okay, a bit to hyperbolic.
I only didn't buy one because to much sweet gives me a migraine.
III.
Apollo's lantern dimmed again the wild blue yonder. A llama farm off
Cherry Hill Road...YES, a llama farm, Not making this up fascinated us. I didn't know
Wisconsin could raise such an exotic mammal. We reached out destination.
Of course after a few more U-turns - Parked right up on little hill between a red barn
and a small German farmhouse - switched shoes from our cheap slide-ins to
a sturdy pair of dirt-gripping brogans out the trunk.
George, a middle-aged White guy, scruffy, gray-haired in a blue jean jacket
and pants nicely greeted us. I firmly shook his hand as normal courtesy. He told us grape
crops statewide have been devastated by rot, because of unusual cold weather and low rain.
Typical Wisconsin, I thought. - He handed us each a fork-shaped tool called a grape razor
and showed us how to use it. A simple process. My mind at first always tends
to complicate the small things.
We hopped in a XUV farm car and drove on the dewy grass between
a tall cornfield and grapevines to a table with yellow and blue lugs underneath.
The rows of fifty plus grapevines were so long and beautiful - Really seemed so unreal to
be there after sitting in coffee shop alone and depressed. Megan saved from my
saturnine state.
She grabbed a yellow lug and I, a blue lug one. We walked out to some
untouched rows and began to pick with no reluctance. - Disembodied calls of bird
sung ceaseless acapellas in the near woodland. We couldn't see it, but hear the spin of an
airplane's propeller. An infrequent breeze rustled and slanted the cornfields.
George was right. Some of the grapes were rotted, covered in fuss or both.
We just let those drop to the ground. - Wonderfully surprised to find ladybugs, flies
and even spiders hiding and crawling in the boytroidal bunches. We continuously
picked and picked 'til a whole lug each was filled to the top. Until our fingers and hands
were cold, numb, and of course sticky. Until another lug was filled each.
Felt so Good...
Bill finally came out and handed us three slips of paper each to write our
name, email and row number to get paid. He didn't look any different from George.
No sign of a flat-surface in sight, we chicken scratched the info against our upper leg...
and tucked them inside the lugs. Drove back to the city as Megan's Volkswagen's
seat warmers made us yawn-worthy- Benighted by 6pm sunset.
We could feel our fingers once more.
IV.
I cleansed my mind of all city toxins Milwaukee poisoned me with.
I love my home city so much no matter what. Still it felt so refreshing to barely be
around people. To not see the same ol' civilians. To not even see cars and sidewalks.
To not see the same ol' metropolitan landscapes of refurbished centuries old buildings.
To not see the same ol' coffee shops, restaurants, and art galleries...
All the things which have made me
fall in love with Milwaukee.
Instead, to be surrounded by cornfields, a llama farm, and grapevines.
I was ensorcelled in a ritual of cathartic revitalization out in Batavia, Wisconsin -
named after the Dutch East Indies capital renamed Jakarta. I'll one day maybe visit
Jakarta, Indonesia, baring grapes instead of bombs, baring this poem's words
instead of gunfire. The essence of Milwaukee will captivate me 'til then.
I can't wait to go back out there in another season...
Adrift in Batavia once again-
