Had our first Online Patch Meet yesterday afternoon. Family portrait of squadron patches from the US Navy's Carrier Air Wing 5 (CVW-5). Thrilled to now have this full set in my collection. One of my interests is in patches representing military units that play a role in the security of this region. CVW-5 is one of 3 carrier air wings (CVW-11 and CVW-17 are the other two) that are currently deployed in the Indo-Pacific. They are currently attached to the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) and they are also the only forward deployed carrier air wing that is home-based in Japan at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni and Naval Air Facility Atsugi. There are 2 other reasons why I have a special affinity with CVW-5. First reason was that the first time I stepped onboard an aircraft carrier was the USS Independence (CV-62) when the battle group made a port visit at Fremantle, West Australia, back in late May 1993. I was an overseas undergraduate student in Australia back then and CVW-5 was attached to the USS Independence during the 1990s before it was retired from service in September 1998. The second reason was because the CVW-5 USS Independence 'Banzai Baby' patch was a special patch I bestowed upon my wife (@ksychan) for successfully skiing down a slope called 'Banzai' on the second ski trip we made after she had injured her knee on our first trip there. She persevered and overcame her fears. For that she deserves a patch and make that a 'Banzai Baby' patch. Interestingly, the wing's Tail Code NF can also mean 'No Fear'. Indeed, No Fear for my Banzai Baby. That's the personal significance CVW-5 has for me besides the military domain aspects.
