Avery's smile never falters as their lips move together. Her fingertips dance down the curve of Zelda's waist almost like she's trying to commit every inch of her to memory. Then her hands settle dangerously low on her back, any thoughts of subtlety went out the window long ago. "Can I let you in on a little secret?" Avery smirks, her lips brushing against Zelda's with every word. "We could have done that like day one," she laughs. There'd been no question if she was on her side the second she saw Avery rush back into their cabin, blood splattered on her clothes and a look of near panic on her face. She'd been a little hurt not to be involved in the planning, but this was therapeutic for Avery, and Zelda would never deny her that.

"Okay, breathe," she said, holding her and not even complaining about the fact that blood was ruining her shirt as she rubbed Avery's back, a knife still hanging from the blonde's hand. "Did anyone see you? Did you manage to be more clear with hiding your DNA than you are with theirs on you?"

Avery lived for moments like this with the other.  Where conversations that start out lighthearted dip beneath the surface and before either of them know it they’re spilling their guts.  Tonight’s topic was the ever elusive reasoning on why she was still single and why things haven’t worked out with any of her past girlfriends.  “I think I like to get a little too stoned.  Also, I’m not the kind of girl you’d bring home.”

Chapter 8, part 1

I tried to sneak into the house and to my room as quietly as I could. I didn’t want to wake anyone up but I also didn’t feel like talking to anyone. After I got to my room I inspected myself. No major injuries but a few scratches from glass and one piece of glass on my shoulder. I tried to take it out without a sound but as you can imagine, it was challenging. The glass had bit deep into my flesh.

   I cleaned them with water for now but I’d have to clean the wounds more properly tomorrow. But now I just want to sleep. My mind kept replaying the scream of Avery and the splash of blood over and over again.

   Avery was there tapping my shoulder out of nowhere. I got so scared that I rolled off my bed with my eyes wide open. The sun was burning them and I realised it was Treacher. I had fallen asleep.

   “Why so jumpy?” he asked, clearly teasing me but he had a concerned face. “But that’s not the question I’m here for. Where the hell have you been?”

   I had to take a moment to think what to answer. I was looking for Harding? I was chased by Avery who is definitely not Avery. Fully at least.

   “I was looking into a case.”

   Treacher looked at me for a moment. “Couldn't have informed me, could you?”

   “I thought about it but it wouldn't have been of any use. Better this way.”

   “What do you mean no use? I could have helped you. Heck, I could have come with you.”

   I don't know if I should tell him I was with him. Is he scared I saw Avery? 

   “I was with you in Dorking”, I state hesitantly. 

   I can sense the awkwardness hanging in the heavy silence. Treacher must have processed the information during that time but for me it was uncomfortable. 

   “No, I was literally alone there”, he tried to convince himself. “I was definitely alone.”

   “That's the impression I might give outside. The house makes you remember me. But you could say I don't exist out there.”

   The awkward silence was back. I had told him about this like a million times. Why was it so hard to process now? I wanted to go look through the papers I took but I didn’t want Treacher to know I actually went inside Avery’s house. He would’ve freaked out. And I needed to get that mobile phone and go snoop around London. I have so many things to do. I couldn’t stay there forever.

   “Look, I still have a lot to do. I really need to get going”, I finally stated. 

   “Could I help?”

   “No.”

   “Please?”

   “You’re too close to this.”

   That stoke his nerves and he stormed out of the room. But I was right, wasn’t I? He was way too close to this and it would just mess things up. I did the right thing.

   I got up and took the papers out of my bag. They had gotten a bit scrunched but they were mostly readable. There were many articles from newspapers, a few pictures, some handwritten and typed notes. There were even a few drawings that I had no idea what they represented. Many shapes and confusing lines. Some things popped from the mass of text to my eyes like blood in snow. Treacher’s name repeated a few times there and so did Decker’s. The familiar names I saw there were Carlton Harding and Avery Harding and they were everywhere. There were like every article that had the name Harding there. About the winery, Carlton’s interviews and disappearance and alleged cases of fraud, hygiene problems, everything. Most of them were something I had yet to see.

Star Trek: Lower Decks' return to Deep Space Nine only brought back Quark and Kira (and Morn), but there's logic to why other Niners didn't show.

Only Colonel Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor) and Quark (Armin Shimerman) (and Morn) appeared in Star Trek: Lower Decks' return to Deep Space Nine, but there's logic to why the other Niners didn't show. In Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3, episode 6, "Hear All, Trust Nothing," the USS Cerritos docked at DS9 so that Colonel Kira could work with Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) to open trade talks with the Karemma from the Gamma Quadrant. Meanwhile, the Lower Deckers got to experience DS9's Promenade, and they even rescued Quark when the secret of his business success was exposed and the Ferengi was arrested by the Karemma.

While Star Trek: Deep Space Nine fans naturally hoped to see as many familiar faces as possible, it makes sense that Kira and Quark were the only DS9 actors to reprise their roles. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's series finale gave a built-in reason why the guest spots were limited: With the United Federation of Planets' victory in the Dominion War, most of DS9's eclectic cast of characters left the station. The most important departure was Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), who became one with the Prophets and ascended as a non-linear being. While Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig), Lt. Ezri Dax (Nicole De Boer), and Jake Sisko (Cirroc Lofton) remained on the station, 6 years have also passed since DS9's finale. They may have also moved on, but regardless, Star Trek: Lower Decks' story about Quark cheating the Karemma didn't require a doctor, a counselor, or a reporter. It would have been fun to at least see them appear in non-speaking roles at Quark's, but Lower Decks understandably opted to keep their crossover simple, and they never promised a full DS9 reunion.

It was great to see Colonel Kira still in charge of Deep Space Nine while Quark has become a successful intergalactic entrepreneur. DS9's other cast members are likely still where the series finale left them in their lives: Chief Miles O'Brien (Colm Meaney) returned to Earth with his family to teach at Starfleet Academy. Worf (Michael Dorn) became the Federation Ambassador to the Klingon homeworld, but he returned to the USS Enterprise-E in Star Trek: Nemesis. Garak (Andrew Robinson) went home to help Cardassia rebuild after the war. Rom (Max Grodénchik) became the Ferengi Grand Nagus and his wife, Leeta (Chase Masterson), accompanied him to Ferenginar. Nog is likely still in Starfleet (although Aron Eisenberg sadly passed away in 2019) and Odo rejoined the Great Link (and Rene Auberjonois also died in 2019).

Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3 confirmed that Martok (J.G. Hertzler) is still the Klingon Chancellor but Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's villains mostly died, and they are unlikely to ever return. Gul Dukat (Marc Alaimo) is trapped forever in the Book of the Pah-Wraiths while Kai Winn Adami perished (Louise Fletcher recently passed away, sadly). Damar (Casey Biggs) died a heroic rebel leader on Cardassia, and every clone of Weyoun (Jeffrey Combs) is no more.

HISTORY: Avery Claire Decker was born on Psamathe, the only child of a father who was a career soldier in the IMC militia and a mother who was a history teacher. For the most part, her life was normal, up until she turned eighteen. When she was eighteen years old, she was diagnosed with a rare type of brain tumor, which she and her parents were told was incurable. Her parents refused to accept it, and took her to countless other doctors, only for all of them to tell her the same thing, that she could not be cured.

Eventually, she and her parents were approached by Hammond Robotics, who claimed to have technological implants that could cure her through the use of nanotechnology. Her parents, desperate not to lose their only child, gladly handed her over for “treatment”. Avery was subjected to a battery of experiments, having cybernetic implants surgically inserted and being injected regularly with nanites directly into her blood. Eventually, she was cured in the sense that the cancer was gone and she was healthy again, but her body was changed. She gained the ability to generate poison from her skin.

The Syndicate got word of the extent of her power, and wanted to obtain her as an assassin. Hammond handed her over to them for the right price, and installed a chip under her skin that would allow her handlers to control her. They told her that they had killed her parents so she would have no family or home to go back to; they also told Avery’s parents that she had died, hence the reason they never looked for her. They broke her down by abusing her both physically & emotionally, and used her as their assassin.

By some stroke of luck, one day, after nine years of being The Syndicate's puppet, the chip used to control her malfunctioned, breaking their control over her. She took advantage of her free will and abilities and fought back, killing several of the Syndicate's members and escaping the facility. 

Avery is wary of physical contact, both because of all of the physical abuse she suffered by her handlers, and because she is insecure about the dangerous nature of her powers. She has the fear of accidentally hurting or killing someone.
