4) How to perform the feasibility analysis of our question of interest or research? By feasibility, I meant how much time and other resources that we should invest in finding some fruitful results. Does this even a thing in real life?
STEP 3. Prepare a codebook of your own (i.e., print individual pages or copy screen and paste into a new document) from the larger codebook that includes the questions/items/variables that measure your selected topics.)

Why Organic Search Results & Leads Aren't Actually Free

Google's "People also ask" Suggestions: You could spend some serious time looking at ideas by doing this It's a good use of your time though Don't skip it! It's going to be a good way to find "long-tail keywords," that are pretty specific, but very helpful to those who are looking for that specific information It's a time-consuming process, but so important! How to Know What is a Good Key Phrase When you use something like Keywords Everywhere, you'll be able to see a few things at the right side of a desktop screen Volume - This is the number of searches a keyword gets per month in the US on Google - ISH It's not an exact science But a phrase with 2,000 searches vs one with 20 searches per month gives you an idea of what's popular You want to choose a keyword that people search for regularly If not, you won't get much traffic to your site, even if you did rank high on the SERP CPC - This gives a general idea of what this key phrase would cost in Google Ads Again, this is a broad stroke, but gives you some sense of how much competition there is for that phrase out there Comp (meaning Competition) - This is sometimes called Keyword Difficulty for organic search results It measures your competition, that is, other sites that use your target keyword The close the Comp number is to 10, the harder it is to rank for (Sometimes this on a scale of 1 - 100 where 100 is the hardest to rank for) And a big long list of other key phrase ideas - Some of these keywords, sometimes referred to as key phrases, are more specific than your average keyword For example, instead of using "shoes," you'd use "brown sandals for women" This is a more focused keyword and would satisfy searcher intent better than the other keyword Long-tail keywords are a good addition to your targeted keyword and phrases because, often, they give you a higher chance of ranking for a searcher that is looking for a specific result 2 Writing content to match the phrases Once you've spent a considerable amount of time identifying the right keywords to target, you will then have to spend more time writing content that includes these keywords in a meaningful way Content creators used to get away with "keyword stuffing" to make their page show up in the search results But now, Google can read things like a human It's not about how many times you can cram the same exact phrase into a page, over and over It's about crafting content that a human can read using a mixture of phrases We will get into more of this in the on-page SEO section below Side note: You can always have someone create content for you including ideas about what to write about This is an alternative cost to your time Finally, once you have your content and it's published you'll need to bundle related topics together using a pillar page format This is an ongoing process If you have questions about pillar pages you can read: What are Pillar Pages? 3 On-Page SEO There's more than just writing new content too You should also constantly evaluate the pages you already have Based on your keyword research, are you using relevant key phrases on your web pages? Does your page answer questions that people may be searching for? Part of the process for getting your website to rank at the top of organic results is taking long-standing content making it work harder for you Add more text 1000+ words is good 2,000+ is better Break it up so you don't overwhelm visitors And don't worry about scrolling. It's really not a problem Add videos that are related to the topic for that page And be sure your transcript is included for Google read it Make sure you haven't overlooked your Meta Title and Meta Description These elements are needed so that Google can understand what your content is about and at the same time, produce the most relevant results for searchers Meta Title - Read by Google, appears in the search results, and should be related to your key phrases. The title of the page isn't always good enough take some time to understand these and write them so that Google makes a good connection with your phrases Meta Description - Not so much about ranking but matters when your page shows up in search results. Make someone want to click your result with a good description Image alt-tags - Give those pics a name where Google can read it Most content management systems make this an easy task, but it can be time consuming if it wasn't done at the time your website was built Cross-linking - You also need to link to related content within your website. This linking action shows search engines that you are an authority in your industry, offering more than just one page on a specific topic. This increases your chances of ranking well Related Read: What You Need to Know About Your Website Content If you do want to run paid ads, SEO is important because it determines your quality score, which is Google's rating of the quality and relevance of your keywords and pay-per-click (PPC) ads The quality score affects how your ads appear or if they appear at all This is because Google wants content that best matches searcher intent, solves a problem, or answers a question The higher your quality score, the better your ability to satisfy searcher intent The better you satisfy searcher intent, the better your ad rankings will be at the lowest possible cost 4 Link Building So you've performed thorough keyword research, sprinkled those keywords throughout your content, and fully optimized your content for the search engines But if your website still isn't ranking, then it's probably because you haven't built any links And Google loves links Why? Because when there are many high-authority sites linking back to your website, Google sees it as a high-quality site with quality and authoritative content Link building takes quite a bit of time because you need to do some foot work and build relationships with other reputable sites Some people do email outreach and partner with other sites to get links. Others do what's called black-hat SEO and pay for links Google doesn't like this method and will penalize you for it. Mozcom has a great guide for link building. Whatever method you choose, just be aware that quality is better than quantity 5 Monitoring and Reporting When you put this much effort into getting your website's content developed around a specific set of topics, you have to make sure it's working That means someone needs to own this responsibility Along with some software, like HubSpot or SEMRush, you will need to consistently keep track of where your website is ranking NOTE: We don't recommend randomly Googling to see if you appear Google produces very specific results based on your geography, past searches, etc The software gives a much more objective overview of your ranking Be sure you know what you're looking at and what it means so you can provide reporting to the highest levels of the organization What Is "It" Worth to You? "It" - could be referring to the value of a lead generated from the website your time your marketing budget Or all of the above There's a direct correlation between your SEO success and the amount of time and/or budget that you invest. Take your blog posts Viral
I just an a great back-and-forth this morning on twitter (@l6now) over the discussion on K-Factor calculation with Jorge, a friend of the Launch6 Team. For those of you that never heard of a “K-Factor,” it’s basically a formula one uses to calculate a viral sharing number. The K-factor can be used to describe the growth rate of websites, apps, or a customer base. The formula is roughly as follows:
i = number of invites sent by each customer c = percent conversion of each invite k = i * c
Before we get into how to measure viral distribution, let’s find out some reasons why your content is NOT going viral.
Everyone wants their content to go viral, right? Why else would we spend hours and hours working on blog posts, creating infographics, and crafting engaging messages on your social media accounts? We want people to read it.There is a big difference between creating content and creating engaging content that people want to read and share with their friends online. If you are not getting the results you want from your content development plan and failing to get the far reaching exposure that will expand your brands online presence, then you need to make a change.
Unfortunately, creating great content does not necessarily mean that it will go viral. There are a number of key reasons why your content is not going viral.
The following points bring to light some of the most common mistakes that professional and novice content creators make when creating online content:
Your content lacks an emotional connection: Tapping into your readers emotions is essential. People love content that appeals to their emotions, especially when you tap into problem areas and offer viable solutions. Start by using emotional words and phrases in the title of your blog post or video and try using a basic problem/solution style in the body of your post.
Your content in not inherently shareable: One of the biggest mistakes that people make that prevents their content from going viral is that they create non-sharable content. This is why it’s viral to understand your audience and tap into their interests. Write about topics they want to read about, be current, tell a story, and provide the information your audience is searching for online.
Your timing is off: Timing is everything. For example, no one cares about romantic date ideas to sweep your sweetheart off their feet on Valentine’s Day if it’s posted on February 15th. This is important for everything you post. When you post is also very important – look into the times and days of the week when your content is most likely to shared and create a timeline that will help you maximize the impact of your content.
Your content is not visually appealing: Looks matter! Your content need to look the part. The design needs to look professional, have attention grabbing elements, and be visually appealing to your audience.
You are not sharing on the right social channels: If you want your content to go viral, you need to not only share it on the correct social channels online, you also need to tap into the audience that is interested in reading and sharing your content. Think about your connections. Do you know any friends, family, or colleagues that have influence in topic area? Is there a particular social media channel that is intuitive for the type of content you want to share?
Rectifying these issues to better position your content will help you reach a wider audience – an audience that is looking for and actually wants to read your content.

MEASURING VIRAL DISTRIBUTION
Explanations are explanations, promises are promises, diagrams are diagrams… but only performance is reality.
Let’s look at how to measure social distribution. Our question here is: given a new user, how many additional new users will we get? This is what’s known as a k-factor. If k is above one, we have gone viral. Unless you are the purple cow, k is well below one, but that doesn’t mean you���ve failed. Recall that Dropbox benefitted heavily from social distribution despite not going viral. A k of 0.5 means that for every 10 users you acquire (through adwords, blogging, affiliates, etc.), you’re also getting another 5 on top which lowers your cost per acquisition.
MEASURING YOUR K-FACTOR
You won’t get these 4 measurements from Google Analytics, so you’ll need to an engineer handy to run some queries. It’s a pretty simple formula, k=a*b*c*d with the following definitions
a: the percentage of users who publish at least one share event per visit.
b: the average share events per user per visit.
c: the number of Users referred from social networks for each share event.
d: the percentage of c that become authenticated users (i.e. in a state where they too can publish).
If you’ve just run the numbers here there’s a 99% chance that you’re disappointed. You were hoping for somewhere in the 0.5 to 1.5 range, but now you’re staring 0.02 in the face, meaning that for every fifty users you acquire, you might get one bonus one.
IMPROVING YOUR K-FACTOR
There are 4 metrics you need to aggressively monitor. They are as follows:
MUU: total number of monthly unique users.
MAU: total number of monthly authenticated users (i.e. those that are logging in).
DAU: total number of daily authenticated users.
pDAU: total number of daily authenticated users who publish sharable events.
There are 3 key ratios shown here—MUU to MAU, MAU to DAU, and DAU to pDAU. Improve each of these ratios improves your k-factor. Let’s look at what we can do.
IMPROVING MUU TO MAU
In other words, how can we get more of the monthly visitors to sign-up or login? There’s 3 ways to influence this ratio:
One-click social sign-in. This outperforms username/password on all consumer products, bar none. If you don’t have it as an option, you’re hurting yourself.
Promote social sign-in above your standard sign-in. All things being equal, consumer sites want customers to sign in via Facebook, as this helps the product spread. Of course, do offer your own login system as an option, but only as a secondary one.
Finally, for customers arriving from a social network, have them sign in solely through that network. e.g. if a user comes via Twitter, ask them to sign in via Twitter. It’ll be the smoothest experience (as they’re already logged in).
IMPROVING MAU TO DAU
Another way to phrase this would be: how can I increase engagement so that my users return to the site more frequently (and log in while doing so)?
We’ve covered the techniques for engaging users extensively on the blog before, but the key ideas here are automatic login (the average Facebook user is perpetually logged into Facebook, so you can automatically log them into your site based on FB authentication), useful notifications to motivate a return, and regular digests and summary mails.
IMPROVE DAU TO PDAU
How can we encourage more of our users to share? There are three key ideas here:
Lightweight event sharing: anywhere there is activity, you should ask yourself if it is shareable. Someone pins a dress on Pinterest, makes a playlist on Spotify, likes a photo on Flickr, reads an article on the New York Times site, adds a review on Foursquare, starts a project on Dribbble, searches for photos on Spots.io… all of these are shareable events. The more you have, the better your ratio.
Passive sharing: you can automatically share some activities, assuming you have user’s permission. For example, Spotify, LastFM, Quora, etc. all passively share lots of user activities, which guarantees a pDAU to DAU ratio of 1:1. Every single time I launch Spotify, I’m sharing to Facebook. When you can remove a ratio from the equation, it significantly reduces your challenges.
Share from anywhere: a common mistake here is to only permit sharing from your web app. Activities should be shareable any time they are performed—not just through a web application. This means that in the rush to sleek mobile design, you need to be careful about cutting off your call-to-actions for sharing.
CONCLUDING THOUGHTS
Spamming doesn’t work. It’s bad for business. Sharing without permission, sharing non-user activity on their behalf, spamming friend lists, sending irrelevant push notifications, all of these are short-term wins, but in the long term you lose absolutely everything. Your app will be blocked, your users will cancel, and your product will be pulled from the App Store.
Viral distribution accelerates your logical conclusion. This is why you have to solve retention first. If you have no compelling reason to return, then going viral won’t help you—it’ll just speed up the process at which you die. Bill Bernbach famously said “Nothing kills a bad product faster than good advertising. Everyone tries the thing and never buys it again.”. The same is true for good distribution.
Social distribution brings a new wave of growth which both consumer and business-to-business products can benefit from. But if your product sucks then it just brings the lethal injection.
Lastly, marketing guru Mark Baratto says put out great content and a reason to share it. If content is good consistently over time, you will become an authority in your space. The more value you add to your customer, there more they will want to help you; put your customer first.

Welcome to my latest summary of recent ecommerce news, resources & studies including search, analytics, content marketing, social media & Etsy! This covers articles, podcasts, videos and infographics I came across since the early March report, although some may be older than that.
I am hoping to launch a new ecommerce resource page on my website in May, although that is looking a bit ambitious with everything else I have on the go. (I've released the latest version of my Etsy search ebook, and am working on updating the keyword research ebook this week as well as still drafting a few new blog posts on Etsy search.)

TOP NEWS & ARTICLES
Etsy Ads have been turning themselves on without sellers taking any action. There are threads here, here, here, and here. There is a video here with more people reporting the issue in the comments. A few cases seem to be related to using vacation mode, and at least one person reports a much higher budget than they would have chosen. So go check to make sure they ae still off (unless you want them running).
eBay, Etsy and some other marketplaces have formed a coalition to lobby against proposed laws they say could harm small sellers and microbusinesses. The Coalition to Protect American’s Small Sellers (PASS Coalition) is currently fighting the INFORM Consumers Act, which “would require online marketplaces to disclose third-party seller information to consumers, including name, address, email and telephone, or face civil penalties.” An Etsy rep said that this would be problematic because it would affect the privacy of sellers, and could potentially move communications off-site meaning Etsy would have less “ability to ensure seller integrity and consumer protections.”
PayPal is now allowing Americans to pay using cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin; this is rolling out over the next few months.
ETSY NEWS
Remember when Etsy Ads got way more expensive and stopped working for some people? Here’s the technical explanation of what they changed. [It is very technical in some parts, so most people will struggle with a lot of it] Note they explain that the Etsy Ads algorithm “ranks listings based on their bid price, multiplied by their predicted click-through rate”, and that they added contextual factors such as the time, the day of the week, and the buyer’s platform to tailor the bidding, and the expected order value is supposed to be part of the final bid calculation. They also mention that the current system is using the “30-day listing purchase rate” as a factor. The results of testing: “[t]he buyers saw more relevant results from ads (+6.19% CTR), the buyers made more purchases from ads (+3.08% PCCVR) and the sellers received more sales for every dollar they spent on Etsy Ads (+7.02% ROAS).” It’s clear that Etsy Ads are designed for the really big spenders, not small shops.
April’s attribute updates include candles and desks.
In their latest sustainability initiative, Etsy will now offset carbon emissions from packaging.
Etsy’s “disaster relief fund” has launched, but it is only available to US sellers, which is something not stated until you click to the application form. The FAQs actually state it is available to “all sellers”. Because everyone on Etsy is American, right?
Etsy donated $500,000 to two groups working against Asian hate. Ironically, they also got called out for having an algorithm that was surfacing “erotic” photos of Asian women as recommendations on listings that were completely unrelated items with only “Asian” as a common keyword. The issue was also noted in searches for “Asian photo”. Etsy’s response was to remove 3 listings and to promise to “continue to work on improving our algorithm to avoid surfacing recommendations where not relevant or appropriate.”
The Spring and Summer Trend Report is out, with the usual detail on trending items and keywords used. Some of the search trends:
“143% YoY increase in searches on Etsy for checkered prints”
Things like mushrooms, and “waves and squiggles” are hot
Outdoors, plants and gardening, staycations & decor related to travel are all expected to continue to be popular
“286% YoY increase in searches on Etsy for vintage colored glassware”
“42% YoY increase in searches on Etsy for pendant necklaces”
“86% YoY increase in searches on Etsy for clothing patterns”
SEO: GOOGLE & OTHER SEARCH ENGINES
If you are fairly new to SEO for search engines such as Google, you may find that it seems way too complex, and you might worry that you are missing something. Here is a great basic checklist for websites. Most of these items will not apply on marketplaces such as Etsy; e.g., Etsy rewrites the file name, and doesn’t allow you to create an URL separate from the listing title, or a meta description different from the listing description.
One of the most common questions I get is “how do I get backlinks”? Fortunately, Moz just came out with the Beginner's Guide to Link Building.
You know that links are very important for Google ranking, but do you know how Google decides that? Read this, and you will. [text with lots of graphics]
If you really want to know everything about SEO, Search Engine Journal compiled a fabulous list of resources. Some get very technical, so this list is definitely not for everyone.
A new study says that ⅔ of Google searches do not result in a click; people are getting the information they seek from various Google features on the search page. The study does not separate out simple searches such as the temperature outside, or a spelling check, in which users wouldn’t benefit from clicking. But while the click rate is dropping, users are still growing, so the total number of clicks continues to increase. Here’s a bit of commentary on the study.
Although Google says it likely won’t change ranking much, here’s a good overview of the upcoming Core Web Vitals algorithm update.

Trends in the best headline/caption/title for sharing have changed. BuzzSumo’s review of 100 million posts shows that emotional phrases are no longer as big as they were in 2017, and the most shared headlines are now shorter: only 11 words/65 characters. There is a lot of analysis of Twitter and Facebook as well as general info here.
Ideal image size is different on every social media platform; this infographic gives you all the sizes for the major sites.
Reminder: don’t buy Instagram followers. A lot of the services sell bots and inactive accounts, which means you won’t get any engagement. The article ends with a few tips on how to get authentic followers that will actually help you.

Poshmark now has listing videos. Any videos added also show up on a seller’s Posh Stories. eBay is also rolling out videos on listing pages and storefronts.
Walmart’s Marketplace now allows sellers from outside the United States; the first new group is from China.
Hudson’s Bay Company is the latest to invite third-party merchants to sell on its site, the Hudson’s Bay Marketplace. There isn’t much there yet, though.
