i almost left this comment on a youtube vid but i’ll just put it here (this is the vid that made me say ppl will look at game balance and call it bad game design):
i do like this video overall, but i do disagree with a few of these points.
- up until a few years ago, i had heard literally NOTHING but praise for DD. while i understand it was controversial at the time, it felt like most gamecube era game got low/unfair scores at the time. honestly, it wasn’t until the 2020’s when i saw people talk about how good wii is alongside the unfavorable comparison to DD.
- the koopalings being separate characters can come off as lazy, but all of them ARE different characters with different animations and different weight classes. certainly more work was put into them than pink gold peach.
- oh god the mk8d double item box… i’m tired of people calling game balance “bad game design” bc they can’t find a way to cheese it. i do, in fact, think being able to hold onto a star or chain chomp in first place for as long as possible without using it bc you just don’t switch out the character is not a good thing! i do, in fact, think that’s bad game balance! you can prefer it, but i think mk8d did a great job balancing it.
