             Ok, there’s a lot going on here. I had my grandstanding moment and while I’m going to keep on pumping out my opinions based on as much fact as I can. So here we go, benfords law. I’m sure that everyone’s heard the term, if you haven’t you’ve heard all the other shit going on about the election now and days. Yes, it’s true, we have the election still going on right now. NO MATTER WHAT THE MEDIA SAYS RIGHT NOW.

           “But Mr. Barbarian, how else would I know who won the election?” Well my completely fake and innocent quotation I’ll tell you just how. Do your own research. I had to, granted it was a little before now, but it’s a lot better than the crap that the media’s gonna peddle to you now and days.

           See I’ve heard and seen a lot of horse crap because of this election. The left/liberal/democrat side of things will absolutely claim Joe Biden won. The right/republican/conservative side of things will tell you it’s not won yet. Some of those who’ve been stuck in the middle will tell you “Well hey normally I don’t agree with media, but I want this to be all over…so fuck it Biden’s president elect.” Or something to akin to that.

           Well here’s the issue, none of the sides are wrong only one part of it is. Ok so we know it was Biden v. Trump for the presidency. We also know…ahem…that things are a little fishy with the mainstream media/big tech who I absolutely adore *complete sarcasm*. To some extent they’re right at the moment, or they would be any other year.

           We’ve gotten so complacent that when we’ve had presidential elections in the past there was one clear and obvious winner between the two candidates. When all the poll’s, accept this year, projected a winner the media would go ahead and tell you who was going to be our new president elect. But there’s a stipulation to that. They didn’t tell you what had to be done before he became the actual president elect.

           There’s a whole process of which all the votes still have to be counted. After that he or she still had to get approved by congress after that was all said and done. At the same time if there was to much of a lead between the two candidates the loosing side would normally just concede. What we have here, is in my mind, a normal election cycle for the president.

           We’ve had over a couple of decades at this point of the lead being so high that the looser just gives up. Its kind of like being in a football game, looking at the scoreboard and deciding that because the other team has a big ass lead on you, you’re just gonna give up. That’s not normal for any damn football game I’ve seen…and I’m a Vikings fan, we lose A LOT! Hell, we don’t even have a Lombardi trophy to our damn name. Anyways, that’s what the hell our chosen few that want to run for president have been doing for…probably almost a century now.

           Yeah, we had the whole Florida thing in 2000, but really all that came down to was “Oops I fucked up the programming. My bad guys!” Not to mention that was a special case and it took 36-37 days to fix that shit. This election year though is a whole different game. We’ve got two teams sitting there trying to win and it’s a tied score.

           Um…that was oversimplifying it. No, there’s no way to “every-man” this one. Ok so basically, we’re starting off with a tied score between Trump and Biden. There was some crazy shit that went on during the game though. Some people were told to use sharpies on their ballots when it could have actually made the things not read in the machine. There’s little evidence on that one, they were talking about it days before the election. There’s the whole observer thing, where they were only allowed to be 20 feet away, then they were supposed to be 6 feet away but never got the chance.

           There’s a lot of shit. Now in this game Trump can completely call the ref on his bullshit. Hey if you feel like it will give you the edge and you feel like it will help you win as a competitive person go for it. Are they legitimate? Well that’s what we got the courts for, if they aren’t well then Trump looks like a big ass with yolk on his face. Nuff said.

           The one that I knew nothing about that keeps popping up though was this “benfords law” bullshit though. I had to take a good hard long look at it. I went back to school, cracked open my dusty ass math book and said, “What in the fuck is benfords law?” Now I know. And for once I’d hate to say it fellow Trump supporters but it’s one that we shouldn’t be putting out there. Yes, I want Trump to be president for another four years. No, I do not like Biden at all cause he’s full of shit. This “benfords law” thing though…it uh…it made us all look like a bunch of dumb asses though.

           Basically what it says is if you have enough numbers in the real world, or data, at random one of the biggest things you’ll see is that the number 1 is going to pop up the most. Well looking at the graphs from the election, a couple of the graphs for good ol’ Sleepy have other numbers at a greater value than 1. Someone that I guess heard the name “benfords law” or knew about it loosely said that Sleepy’s votes are violating a basic mathematics law.

           We’re all shitty to each other right now. Everyone’s pointing a finger or trying to piss the other off or just emotional over the election, then that shit came out. We saw it, we ran with it, we posted it. Well there’s a catch to our pal benford, there has to be enough variety to the data that you have. Que? What nonsense are you talking about here? Well um, turns out that yes there were a couple of counties that reported this shit…but not in one state…in completely different states. One we knew we’d lose Illinois, the other in PA, and then another in Michigan.

           Just one county that I could find specifically in each state. I could be wrong, there could be a little more in each state, but that’s all I found. We’d pretty much have to have about 90-95% of the whole damn state for “benfords law” to kick in. Yeah, they use it for elections and shit, but they also use it for tax fraud as well. They kind of use it for all of us that pay our taxes and then get that sweet return at the end of the year. The government puts all the numbers together then averages them out then see who’s sticking up to high on the graph numerically that doesn’t make sense to “benfords law”, then they do an audit of the person.

           With that said this “benfords law” thing kind of doesn’t stick. I get it, you’re pissed reading that. You want Trump to have another four years, I’m an asshole for not finding another way to help out #teamtrump with “benfords law”. Listen, before you get on the high horse don’t forget one thing, we’ve already got a couple of ways for him to win. The biggest thing though is that’s some bullshit what you said right there.

           If Biden wins, it would suck…big time. We did the same thing to the left, whether they were right wrong or corrupt is another issue entirely. We elected Trump in 2016 over Hillary Clinton and the left has been bitching about it ever since. My suggestion is, pull that stick out of your ass and find the best way to fix things. No this is not perfect; it’s never going to be perfect but as Americans its our job to get it as close to perfect as possible. While you’re sitting bitching about Sleepy just remember that’s time that you could be spending campaigning for local office, state office, or hell what I’m going to do and get your name out there and go for the big time. It does no one favors just sitting around bitching to much including yourself.

           So, all I got to say this go around is that the “benfords law” thing is bunk. The more we bitch about it the more idiotic we look. We literally just gave the liberals/left/democrats something to shit talk us about by spreading it so much. I as a Libertarian wanted and needed to know more and can tell you for one, I almost fell for the trap too. Put some time and energy in to wearing that MAGA gear that you got to represent our president and get some planning done. Make a sign, a slogan, think of how you’d fix the country and go do it. It ain’t gonna be easy but if it fixes this country it will be fucking worth it.

A serious discussion about the future of the left.

Introduction:

Comrades who share this wonderful discussion forum of r/communism, I want you to take a moment to ask yourselves, what is it that we want? What are we fighting for? I imagine most of us are fighting for abolition of private property, collective ownership over the means of production and distribution, a dissolution of the state as an apparatus for control by the bourgeoisie, democratization of all parts of life, better healthcare and welfare for those who need it, and other such extremely noble aims. I myself believe in all of these very strongly. But I'm afraid that many on the left (unintentionally, I hope) are preventing us from achieving these aims, or even actively taking us backwards, towards fascism. So, in what I'm sure will turn out to be an extremely long essay, I want to take a while to discuss action that we all should be taking. I hope everyone reads this through to the end. If you dislike it, feel free to downvote, but please read till the end regardless.

Part I: The Current State of the Left

This might start out kinda rude, but we on the left really suck. A lot. We seem to view people with other beliefs as inferior, deluded, and misinformed idiots who are only capable of seeing just past the end of their noses and unable to view the big picture. And, on some level, I do understand the impulse. It can be hard to put up with their stupid arguments, blatant mistruths, and denial of facts. But a lot of leftists (I myself am also guilty of this) respond to these with insults, ad hominem and name-calling. This is not effective. As hard as it is to get this through our heads, we need more people. If you hang out only in far-left chatrooms, patting all your Marxist-Leninist comrades on the back at how great it feels to own liberals and progressives, you are the problem. The future of the left lies in those people. If you ask an average person off the road what they think about leftists, they’ll usually respond in one of three ways; They’ll either shrug and say they don’t care, call them whiny snowflakes who only complain, or call them belligerent pricks who won’t shut up. Across all my time on planet earth, even when I talk to people who I know hold similar values to my own, they all think of leftists as these 3 things. This isn’t a group that’s going to attract new people. If anything, they’ll be pushed further away. And we need these people. I know many like to talk about revolution like it’s an excuse for them to not have to engage with liberals and progressives, but you’re delusional if you think that. If today, a revolution began in The United States, do you think it has any chance of succeeding? Revolution can only occur with a large enough power base, either among the people or among armed forces. We don’t have any opportunity to raise forces like the red army, so our power base needs to come from people. Average, milk-toast liberals and progressives. That is where the future of the left is.

Part II: Liberalism and Marxism

Liberalism, that is, the philosophy of the enlightenment, is a philosophy that is incompatible with Marxism. Liberalism came about as a way to justify capitalism, and pushed faux progressivism to legitimise capitalism’s promise of a new, equal society. Hate liberalism as much as you want. But liberals, the people who believe in the ideology, are not incompatible with us. Many share similar ideals of a free and equal world, many do in fact support things like healthcare, women’s rights and greater equality of income. They’re just misinformed. They have been the target of misinformation and propaganda from the day they were born, and so are unable to believe in socialism. They view communism as some sort of demonic entity, trying to take over the foundations of society and enslave everyone. And you insulting them isn’t really helping matters. It’s a sad fact that far-left leaning people, and even socialists, are an extreme minority in most of the world. Most people are moderates. Its just that the people with the most extreme beliefs are also often the loudest, and so are disproportionately represented in media and online circles. This is also why neo-nazis seem so common on the internet-they’re just the ones who shout the most. This isn’t about who’s right or wrong, it’s just a fact that the vast majority of people in every country are moderates, neither far-right nor far-left. And so that’s why we need to go on a crusade against misinformation. Now, let’s go onto Marxism. I won’t demean you by defining Marxism, so let’s get to the point. Don’t. Call Yourself. A Marxist. 99% of the time, if you call yourself a Marxist, people will automatically stop listening. As hard as it is, call yourself a socialist (or some variation thereupon). People have been conditioned to associate Communism with authoritarianism, even though they aren’t at all related. Socialism, while still heavily bastardised, lacks that same association with the regimes of Stalin or Mao, so they’re more palatable to the general public. And again, our aim is to convert the people who are aligned with us socially into being aligned with us politically.

Part III: The Art of Proselytising

To convert the liberals is a difficult task. It can be hard, because a lot of leftists get very invested and personal in defence of their ideology, which can be a good thing in small doses. However, when a person listens to a debate or reads transcripts, do you think they will side with the one who shouts and talks incoherently, or the one who has complete control and is calm and confident? When talking with anyone about politics, stay calm. Calm and collected people are far more attractive to others than brash and loud ones. Even if the opponent’s points are patently bullshit, counter them in a way that doesn’t actively demean them. Wait for them to lost patience and get flustered. Your aim is to try and win over people who may have an open mind. So far has been advice pertaining to formal debate. But how do you chat with liberal friends just in general conversation? Very simple. Don’t demean them. If they talk to you about a liberal policy that they like, support them. Agree. As long as that policy isn’t actively harmful, there is no harm in saying that you like it too. Don’t respond by going, “Heh, this changes nothing. The problem is capitalism, and these policies are just to keep you content enough to stop asking questions.” This actively discourages them from your ideas by putting it in their head that the things they want are fundamentally different from the things you want. Instead you respond with, “yeah man, that’s really cool!” Agree, and then later bring it up how you think that we could expand on that idea and bring it into the realm of something more in line with actual socialism. And when they talk about a liberal policy they dislike, try and show them how a more left-leaning policy would be more in line with their ideal society. I know this is vague and unspecific, but I want this to be as universally applicable as possible. Lastly, know when to stop. If someone seems averse to your ideas, don’t push them into reading Das Kapital or the Communist Manifesto. Just accept it and move along. After all, if you push too hard, they may give up on you completely and we don’t want that. Their will always be more chances in the future to try and convert.

Part IV: Choosing your Targets

This is a short section. Don’t bother trying to convince ethnic nationalists, neo-nazis or other members of the alt-right in informal forums. It’s a fruitless endeavour. You need to accept that they have committed themselves to a belief which holds no evidence to support it, and so no matter what evidence you bring up to dismiss their claims, it wont matter. In formal debates you can engage them and show how their beliefs are false, but just don’t bother otherwise. Anarcho-capitalists are generally beyond help, but not always. A good litmus test is to ask them if they think trans rights should be promoted. If yes, there is still hope. If not, give up. Ancaps take a lot of work to convert though, so you’ll be in for the long haul. Liberals are your prime targets. They have social values which align with our own, we only need them to realise that those social values would be best served under socialism rather than capitalism. Because one thing to remember is that when it comes to pure facts, logic and evidence, we have the right beaten hands down. Its not even a contest. We just need to make ourselves feel more appealing to the liberals.

Part V: Please, Think Realistically

Change will not happen just suddenly. It needs to be systematically created, and we are the ones who need to do it. It can be comforting to think that the revolution will come, it will be glorious and we will henceforth live in a communist utopia. That’s not going to happen. First off, we need enough people for a revolution. As someone who lives in India, I can tell you what the general reaction to the Naxalites is here- fear, paranoia and mistrust. I understand their goals, but unless more people support them, they will be able to do nothing. We need to plant seeds of this support ourselves. It really disturbed me to see leftists unironically planning to vote for Trump because it would show the Democrats that their model wasn’t working (or something like that) while forgetting that by doing so they would be giving power over to a far-right demagogue who would probably just directly execute you if he could. Us being correct doesn’t mean we are above the mundane conflicts of society. We are as much a part of it as anybody else and so we need to be able to put ideals on the backseat to pragmatism. So why do I bring this up? Because arguing for ideas like the abolition of private property will get you nowhere. Most people are going to frightened by such ideas, so instead we need to dial it back. We can still keep our ideals, but when converting people start small. “hey, wouldn’t it be cool if you could visit a hospital without going bankrupt? Or maybe if you had a say in the decisions at your company rather than just listening to your boss all the time? Or maybe if the people at the top weren’t so much richer than everyone else?” Such ideas will seem mundane to us. But to the average person they’re incredibly attractive. Don’t talk in terms of vague, high-minded ideals or all-encompassing social change. Focus on how their life would improve under socialism. The sad truth is, not many people care about the greater good. To get through to such people, you need to show them how they would be better off.

Conclusion: It’s 3:30 am here, I’m really sleepy

We need the support of more people. When talking to them, approach people with earnestness and respect. It leaves a better impression. Don’t be overly humble however. Talk about tangible change that the average person can clearly see would improve their lives. Stop insulting people, and get out there to start actively engaging with others. Lastly, know how to prioritize your enemies. Don’t treat fascists, liberals and soc-dems the same, they all warrant different reactions and by acting like they’re the same, you actively push them closer together.

Analysis: The most eye-popping lines from Trump's Texas speech

He spent 75 minutes speaking to a crowd who hung on his every word and seemed more than willing to relive the greatest hits of his 2016 campaign — from “Build the wall!” to “Lock her up!” Trump, of course, reveled in the adulation — allowing the love of the audience to take him to ever more fantastical rhetorical heights, lifted there by a mountain of inaccurate information.

I went through the whole transcript and pulled out the lines that matter most. They’re below.

1. “I love this state, and I love the people of this state. We’ve had a great romance together. You know that. Been a great romance.”

Donald Trump and Texas sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g. First comes love then comes … ah, you know the rest. And away we go!

2. “This is like the Academy Awards used to be. Used to be. They’ve gone down a long ways since they started hitting us a little bit, right?”

There’s so much here. First, Trump was comparing his rally to the Academy Awards because of the amount of press that was covering it. (But I thought he hated the media?) Then he’s saying that the Oscars, like everything else, aren’t as good as they used to be. And finally, he is attributing the decline of the Oscars to the fact that some of the actors have taken shots at him. He truly contains multitudes.

3. “And America is winning again. Isn’t that nice?”

Winning is nice. And no, before you even ask, I am not sick of it yet. Or bored.

4. “It’s a mainstream, commonsense agenda of the American people.”

This line is a preview of how Trump is going to try to sell himself to skeptical voters in 2020: Don’t believe the way the media covers me, look at my results on the economy. Or on trade. Or on foreign policy. The elites may disapprove of how I’ve done things, but the average Joe gets it. I think that is a very hard sell given where his poll numbers are among independents, but we shall see!

5. “And a new poll just came out today. Rasmussen. One of the most respected polls. One of the polls that got the election right. So I have to remember that. You know what the number is? Fifty-two percent, with no good news!”

Rasmussen is widely regarded as a decidedly Republican-leaning polling outfit. On November 2, 2018, they ran a piece headlined “Is Another Silent Red Wave Coming?” It wasn’t. Rasmussen has consistently been an outlier when it comes to Trump’s approval ratings as well. While Rasmussen’s latest poll did have Trump’s job approval at 52%, the Real Clear Politics polling average has his approval 10 points lower than that.

6. “So, someday, with all of us — this is all of us — and those hats are beautiful, by the way. Someday.”

This an an unedited “sentence” from the President of the United States. Someday.

7. “If you would say, as an example, that tonight 69,000 people signed up to be here — now the arena holds 8,000. And thank you, fire department. They got in about 10,000.”

This, from the El Paso Times, serves as a tidy fact check: “A Fire Department spokesman said 6,500 people were inside the venue and denied any special accommodations were made.” The story also says that “thousands” of people were outside, but refrained from any official estimate. Crowd size is, of course, a dumb measure of, well, anything. But Trump cares deeply — and exaggerates heavily — about it.

8. “But if you want to really see something, go outside. Tens of thousands of people are watching screens outside. Tens of thousands.”

Enrique Aguilar, a public information official with the El Paso fire department, said there might have been 10,000 total people at the Trump rally. That would mean about 6,500 inside and another 3,500 outside. Which is slightly short of “tens of thousands.”

9. “A young man who’s got very little going for himself, except he’s got a great first name. He has — he challenged us, so we have let’s say 35,000 people tonight and he has 200 people, 300 people. Not too good.”

OK, so Trump likes the name “Beto.” That’s about all that’s true in this line though. Law enforcement officials that the Dallas Morning News spoke to estimated that 7,500 people participated in the “March for Truth” that O’Rourke appeared at. Which is more than 300. By a lot.

10. “What I would do is I would say, that may be the end of his presidential bid. But he did challenge us.”

So, Trump is claiming that he effectively ended Beto O’Rourke’s unannounced presidential bid because 10,000 people came to his rally and 7,500 went to Beto’s? Oh yeah, this all checks out.

11. “The trade deficit really went down very big this last month. And people are saying, whoa! I told you so. That’s what I do. That’s what I do.”

This is a good read on whether Trump’s trade tariffs on China are actually, you know, working.

12. “We obviously — we found the magic wand.”

Tell me more…

13. “The United States is now the number-one producer of oil and natural gas on Earth.”

14. “Where do these people come from? Where do they come from? They go back home to Mommy. They get punished when they get home.”

It’s when a protester interrupts speech — as in this moment — when Trump’s real bullying tendencies emerge.

15. “Now, you really mean ‘finish that wall,’ because we’ve built a lot of it. It’s ‘finish that wall.’ We have.”

This is how Trump responded to the “build the wall!” chant from the crowd. What he is saying is patently false. Here’s WaPo’s Matt Viser: “The US-Mexico border is 1,954 miles. There’s 654 miles in existing barrier. And as of January, 0 miles of barriers had been added since he took office.”

16. “Is there any place that’s more fun to be than a Trump rally? Is there any place?”

Remember: Trump views himself as an entertainer first and everything else second. So his measure of success is whether people are having fun.

17. “Some people said it was a great speech. Some people said, really, a great speech.”

The two options when it came to Trump’s” State of the Union speech were, according to Trump “great” and “great.” I didn’t think it was a great speech, just for the record. I thought it was sort of blah but fine.

18. “But I really don’t like their policy of taking away your car, of taking away your airplane flights, of, ‘Let’s hop a train to California,’ of … ‘You’re not allowed to own cows anymore.'”

The “Green New Deal” to which Trump is referring was introduced into Congress last week by, among others, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. While liberals love it, you can bet Trump is going to make it a major talking point in his effort to paint Democrats as totally out of touch with the average person in 2020.

19. “No president should ever have to go through what we’ve gone through in the first two years. It’s a hoax. It’s a disgrace. And it should never be allowed to happen again. A hoax!”

To date, special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election has produced 199 criminal charges against 37 people and entities. There have been seven guilty pleas and four people have been sentenced to prison. Another person, former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, was found guilty in a jury trial. These are all facts.

20. “And Richard just announced that they found no collusion between Donald Trump and Russia.”

Here’s what North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr, the head of the Senate Intelligence Committee, actually said: “If we write a report based upon the facts that we have, then we don’t have anything that would suggest there was collusion by the Trump campaign and Russia.” Which isn’t exactly how Trump is spinning it.

21. “The fact is that the real collusion was between Hillary and the Democrats and the other side with Russia. That’s where the collusion is.”

Trump says this a lot. It’s based on a theory that the entire Mueller probe began because of an anti-Trump dossier produced by former British spy Christopher Steele and funded by the Democratic National Committee and the Clinton campaign. But we know for a fact that’s not why the probe started; it started because George Papadopoulos told an Australian diplomat in Britain that he knew the Russians had dirt on Clinton. 22. “And by the way, there’s also collusion between the Democrats and the fake news right here. And they know it better than anybody.”

What is being alleged here? And who is “they”? And why do “they” know it better than anybody?

23. “I don’t think anybody in this room wants to pay 70%, 80%, 90% and 95% tax. Does anybody want to pay a 90% tax?”

Trump refers here to some elements of tax proposals put forward by liberals — including Ocasio-Cortez — that would install a 70% tax on people who make more than $10 million a year. The tax levies would help fund the “Green New Deal.” While Trump is obviously exaggerating here — since most people in the crowd aren’t likely earning over $10 million a year — his attack is a preview of what’s to come for Democrats in the 2020 general election.

24. “We are a hot, hot country.”

25. “It sounds like a high-school term paper that got a low mark. It would shut down American energy, which I don’t think the people in Texas are going to be happy with that.”

Trump, again on the “Green New Deal.” So yeah, I think he’s going to make it a BIG part of his 2020 stump speech.

26. “They want to take away your car, reduce the value of your home, and put millions of Americans out of work, spend $100 trillion, which, by the way, there’s no such thing as $100 trillion. You have to spend $100 trillion. And remember this. No other country except us is going to do it. That’s a little problem, too.”

The idea that “they” — in this case Democrats who support the “Green New Deal” — are coming to take away your stuff and spend a bunch of money on their liberal ideas is a very powerful one in a campaign context for Trump. It also represents the danger for 2020 Democrats who are rushing to the left at the moment to win support from the party’s most liberal voters. It opens them up to the possibility of being caricatured by Trump in the general election.

27. “To pave the way for socialism.”

And this, for Trump, is the cherry on top. He mentioned socialism in his SOTU speech, which was no accident, and he talked about it again on Monday night. The idea is simple: Convince voters that, even if they don’t like Trump personally, that they like his capitalist views. And that the other side is really and truly trying to pursue turning America into a socialist state.

28. “Some of the most dishonest people in media are the so-called ‘fact-checkers.'”

Oh, that is rich. Important note: Donald Trump made over 8,000 false or misleading claims in his first two years in office, according to The Washington Post’s Fact Checker.

29. “He almost moonwalked. His wife stopped him. ‘Darling, darling, it would be inappropriate.’ I want to see somebody try and imitate Michael Jackson in the moonwalk. This would not have been a good scene.”

When he’s right, he’s right.

30. “But the governor stated that he would even allow a newborn baby to come out into the world and wrap the baby and make the baby comfortable, and then talk to the mother, and talk to the father, and then execute the baby. Execute the baby.”

Here’s what Democratic Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam actually said: “There are — you know when we talk about third-trimester abortions, these are done with the consent of, obviously, the mother, with the consent of the physicians, more than one physician by the way. And it’s done in cases where there may be severe deformities, there may be a fetus that’s non-viable. So in this particular example, if a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen. The infant would be delivered, the infant would be kept comfortable, the infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.”

But there is NO question that Northam’s comments — coupled with a new New York law that allows for abortions after 24 weeks in certain extreme situations — have allowed Trump to re-inject the abortion issue into the national consciousness. And that is a very good thing for a Republican president who needs to rally his base come 2020.

31. “They’re becoming the party of socialism, late-term abortion, open borders and crime.”

You are going to hear A LOT more of this from Trump between now and November 2020.

32. “As I was walking up to the stage, they said that progress is being made with this committee. Just so you know: We’re building the wall anyway.”

I am sure this line went down smoothly with the congressional negotiators who have spent the last two weeks trying to hammer out some sort of compromise to keep the government open and funded. No matter what sort of deal you guys make, I am building the wall anyway, says Trump. So there!

33. “The wall’s being built. It’ll continue. It’s going at a rapid pace.”

[narrator voice] It isn’t.

34. “You look at the car companies, they’re moving back.”

Uh, sort of?

35. “Pretty soon we’re going to be saying keep America great. Keep America great.”

Trump has already said, repeatedly, that “Keep America Great” is his preferred 2020 slogan. Also, he’s been running for a second term since the day he won in 2016.

36. “He suffered a great defeat. Watch what the news does tomorrow, though. They won’t mention the disparity. They won’t mention the disparity tomorrow. They’ll say, “Beto O’Rourke.” That’s his last name, right? O’Rourke? Beto O’Rourke had a wonderful rally. Although they had 15 people.”

Again, crowd size is indicative of not a hell of a lot. That said, based on estimates from police and fire officials in El Paso, Trump had 10,000 people at his rally while O’Rourke had 7,500. Just saying. Also: O’Rourke came closer to beating a Republican senator in Texas than any Democrat since 1978.

37. “It’s driving them crazy, but look at them. They still come. I’ve never seen anything like it. But illegal immigration hurts all Americans.”

In the space of five seconds, Trump goes from saying that the media is driven crazy by his success to denouncing illegal immigration. I’m sure this transition makes sense to someone. But that someone is not me.

38. “If we didn’t do that shutdown, we would not have been able to show this country, these politicians, the world what the hell is happening with the border. That was a very important thing we did.”

To be clear: Trump demanded $5.7 billion for the border wall and said he would agree to no deal to re-open the government unless he got that money. He re-opened the government without any new wall funding. And, in the compromise deal that emerged from Congress last night, there is $1.375 billion for new border structures. Which — check my math here — is less than $5.7 billion.

39. “How about the word ‘caravan?’ Caravan? I think that was one of mine.”

In which Donald Trump claims to have invented the word “caravan.”

40. “We have now illegal — we need Perry Mason.”

“Perry Mason,” a TV show about a fictional attorney, went off the air in 1966. Good current cultural reference!

41. “Walls work.”

“The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works.” — Gordon Gekko

42. “By the way, there is nothing better than a good old-fashioned German shepherd.”

Yup. He said this.

Words fail.

Trump tells some version of this story at virtually every campaign rally. A big, tough guy — according to his description — comes up to him as he’s about to take the stage and breaks down in tears, thanking Trump for all he’s done. Could this happen at every rally? I suppose it’s possible. But I think we all know it doesn’t.

48. “When prime ministers and when presidents and kings and queens, they talk to me, they say, ‘Congratulations on what’s happened with your economy, Mr. President.’ It’s incredible. They’re emulating what we’re doing. They can’t believe it.”

I could actually see this happening. But I also think that most world leaders have figured out that the way to get Trump to do what you want is to flatter the hell out of him — whether you believe it or not. So that’s what they do.

49. “And I say it for the world to hear: America will never be a socialist country. Never.”

I am not sure anyone is saying America will be a socialist country. But it doesn’t matter. This is all part of Trump’s sale: Elect Democrats and watch socialism grow.

50. “We were losing track. We didn’t lose track anymore. We’re straight on that track.”

Wait, where is this track? And why were we losing it? Yeah, this feels like a good pace to stop.

Trump predictably came in with a budget torn from the frontal lobes of the Koch Brothers, but one that is also essentially in line with the sensibility of a good many Americans. Even Americans who themselves are only one foot from penury, who are one month from losing their homes, who are desperately in debt and who can barely keep food on the table; these same people basically hate the poor, hate those on food stamps, and hate anyone not white, and sort of think Trump and the other Republican ghouls make sense. They hate difference. Now there is an outcry about the obvious propaganda that claims Assad used chemical weapons (a tried and true PR false flag gambit, that) but almost zero outcry about the U.S. blowing up children (mistakenly…of course) in Yemen and Iraq. Civilian death by military is always OK. The price of being the best. Children died? Oh, well. War is nasty. Real men can tolerate such stuff. But if a *terrorist* blows up a nightclub, say, then the mass outrage goes on for weeks. Plus these were Arab children and, well, you know, they are prone to early death anyway, right? So, to follow the logic, it is OK to occupy Iraq and destroy Libya and (mistakenly) bomb wedding parties and kill children (not to mention manufacture starvation, in the case of Yemen) but its not okay for a leader to kill people with a gas attack? Might this be the result of a Capitalist system that demands inequality to function? I read people demanding I write my congressmen or congresswoman. Demand this or that service be saved. But Trump was elected because, really, his sensibility is that of a majority of Americans. They hate woman, foreigners, minorities, and what they see as the lazy (which is, well, women, foreigners and minorities….so…yeah) — they have also been trained to love their own servitude. None of what is desperately being demanded being saved is really more than a pathetic set of band aids to the problems of inequality, environmental destruction, and loss of civil liberties. If you are a family that needs food stamps (I grew up in such a family), then it IS desperate. But it is desperate either way and the truth is that NOBODY should be forced into the humiliation of food stamps. If you have ever used food stamps, you know the experience of using them. The looks from others in line, the looks from minimum wage clerks. And the restrictions! God forbid the poor use them on something besides instant potatoes and macaroni and cheese. Velveeta at that. This is not to say those on food stamps don’t need them. They do. It’s often the difference between eating and not eating at all. Trump has gotten very little outcry from Democrats about his spike in Defense spending, though. Everyone wins with that move. And how many new threats are being manufactured? China, North Korea, Syria, and the old favorites like Afghanistan and Iraq. And the biggest threat of all, Russia. None of these places, none of the leaders of these countries has done anything to the U.S. Nothing. Zero. And that is remarkable when you think about it. The dialogues and debates are flowing only through fully anticipated and well-regulated channels, and needless to say they fluctuate only marginally and through the fully ‘pre-approved’ frequencies. The average white American, that educated thirty percent who cling, ever more tenuously, to what passes for middle class life, is seemingly motivated most by hatred. Propaganda works because it grants permission to hate. Now, Trump provides the perfect figure to hate right here at home. His appointments are horrible, no question. But as I’ve written before, Obama’s were horrible, too. Only just a bit less horrible. Tim Geithner? Rahm Emanuel? Hillary Clinton? Joe Biden? Scott O’Malia or William Lynn? I mean Hillary Clinton’s under secretary Victoria Nuland is married to arch neo con Robert Kagen. How can one hate Bush and the neo cons but heap praise on Hillary Clinton? But as much as Trump is hated, the figure of the Muslim terrorist is even more hated. And even more than Muslims, Vladimir Putin is hated. But where does this sense of entitlement to meddle in the affairs of other countries come from? It is remarkable how little questioned is the practice of involving the U.S. state in the matters of other countries. Russia elected Putin. Syria elected Assad. And even if, EVEN IF, the elections were fraudulent (they weren’t, but this is a thought experiment) what concern is that of the United States? (Not to mention U.S. elections were not exactly models of probity of late). The U.S. has 800 plus military bases around the world. There is no corner of the globe where you will not find the U.S. military. Do Americans think other countries WANT the U.S. military on their soil? I suppose some do, the fascistic current regime in Poland probably does. And even here in Norway, a nation of inestimable achievements and daily sanity, the general feeling is that having U.S. and NATO around serves as protection. But protection from what? This is really the question, or rather two questions. Who can possibly be thinking of invading Poland or Norway or Japan? The U.S. has bases in Italy, South Korea, Djibouti, Spain, Bahrain, Kuwait, Greece, it has 38 bases in Germany, and bases in the Bahamas, and in Brazil and Honduras and Singapore and Belgium. The list just goes on and on and on. Why does the U.S. have a base in Bulgaria? The answer is, global hegemony. Total and absolute control of the world. That is the goal. And yet this topic is never ever raised in electoral debates or in mainstream media. Never ever. Why did the U.S. go into Haiti to remove Aristide? Why was there a coup in Honduras? Why was Qadaffi murdered again? Does anyone care? The recent press conference Trump called, hastily, with King Abdullah (of Jordan) resembled Shakespearian parody. It was America’s own Mad King Ludwig. But the take away from this train wreck appearance was that Trump is not likely to last. Bannon being yanked off the NSC probably means less than some think but it also reads as loss of face. One thing seems clear in this palace shake up and that is that HR McMaster and the anti-Iranian hardliners are exerting influence. And in general that the old entrenched intelligence and military guys are getting tough. Nature abhors a vacuum and all that. And this was inevitable. Trump, as with any even vaguely out of step National level politician, will be made to heel. The Pentagon was done screwing around with this rube. The shadow of the military state is never too far away. And they don’t play around (think Michael Hastings). One might think there would be less terrorism if the U.S. built schools or clean water plants or hospitals in places like Djibouti or Greece. But then there would be less terrorism if the U.S. stopped helping armed terrorists. And stopped helping countries like Saudi Arabia arm and supply terrorists. The entire marketing of Saudi Arabia as an ally is something to wonder at, really. I mean here is a country that beheads apostates and homosexuals. Where woman can’t drive. And yet, we sell them billions upon billions in armaments and help train their military in how to use them. U.S. presidents visit Riyadh, and have Saudi leaders visit Washington. It is breathtaking, really, to think how demonized Chavez was and how NOT demonized was King Abdullah (Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud..the Custodian of the two Holy Mosques, which I believe was his full name and title). They behead people in public in the Kingdom, a lot of them. But see, the U.S. is a punishment state, too. To deny that is to deny reality. The U.S. prison system is a national disgrace, but more, it is a sign, a kind of living metaphor for the madness of American society. Is *Old Sparky* any less morally bankrupt than chopping off heads in the town square? (As Lenny Bruce said…”If Jesus had been killed twenty years ago, Catholic school children would be wearing little electric chairs around their necks instead of crosses”.) Two million people are in prison in the U.S.. All of them poor. And most black or brown. The U.S. penal system is the most draconian and sadistic in the world, quite possibly. There are occasional news programs, news magazines, that examine prison conditions, but they are token examples that justify the idea of free speech and reform. The nation wide prison strike recently was utterly invisible in corporate media. By the way, the evil Russian empire has all of 9 foreign military bases, all of them in former Soviet countries. How do such facts jive with the propaganda? Oh, and China has ONE foreign military base. One. North Korea, of course, has none. A nation that is operating as an apartheid state, openly and even proudly. And whose political leaders are the most openly racist in the world. But again, this is not a topic in electoral political debate. Is the subject of Israel ever raised in Presidential debate? Is Israeli policy in Gaza ever questioned? No, of course not. And to add a last note on this idea of *terrorism*, a word that has undergone quite a semiotic adjustment over the last decade, the U.S. state does not want an end to terrorism. This is their job description, really, those in intelligence and the military; foment conflict, bomb and rebuild, foment again, bomb and rebuild again. And during this process Defense and contractors like Halliburton and Bechtel reap obscene profits. Terrorism is useful. It makes money. It sustains jobs. These are the enduring tropes of the U.S. political system. Militarism is good, necessary, and almost always heroic. That belief translates domestically to the sadistic occupation of poor black neighborhoods throughout the U.S. The militarization of the U.S. police establishment is stunning, and yet rarely discussed, really. The shooting of unarmed black men hasn’t decreased by the way (The death of Sabin Marcus Jones, a 45 year old schizophrenic is a typical case. His mother called 911 for help because Marcus was off his meds and highly agitated. The police came and Tased him to death. Marcus weighed about 140 lbs. Six police answered that call.) The destruction of much of the Middle East is mirrored exactly in the police destruction of poor black communities in the U.S. Ajamu Baraka wrote recently… After almost three decades of pro-war conditioning by both corporate parties and the corporate media coupled with cultural desensitization from almost two decades of unrelenting war, opposition to militarism and war is negligible among the general population. This is the real story today. Not that a white nationalist is President, or that his new budget is cutting already shrunken social services. No, it is the callous indifference of Americans to their own country’s military violence globally. And it is the nearly psychotic addiction to the consumption of entertainment that is itself a form of egregious propaganda. An addiction to narratives that glorify American society and demonize the rest of the world, or the rest of the world not cravenly subservient to U.S. policy. The real issue is why are so many in such need in the supposedly most powerful and rich country in the world? Baraka ends his essay with this…: There must be an alternative to the neoliberalism of the Democrats and the nationalist-populism of Trump. We need an independent movement to address both the economic needs of poor and working people and the escalating attacks on the Black community, immigrants, women, unions, the LGBTQ community, refugees, Muslims, the physically and mentally challenged, youth, students, the elderly, Mother Earth – all of us. The issue is not that Trump is a racist gangster misogynist bent on further brutalizing the working class and enriching his family and friends. The issue is that America is a nation that has stopped questioning authority. The adoration of wealth is itself a sign of collective derangement. So deep is the demonizing of socialism and communism that even many barely hanging on economically will express affection and admiration for the very rich. Why was Trump such a popular TV host? It certainly wasn’t his riveting personality or scintillating wit. He was RICH. And the rich are the anointed in America. Why does Hollywood (and the UK) keep producing stories about Kings and Queens? Why are settings always the playgrounds of the rich? The answer is complicated but a good part of it is the introjection of some kind of reverse Puritan/Calvinist guilt. A kind of resentment, too, simply. Did Cotton Mather secretly want a Beemer and Rolex? In American mythology, he most certainly did. The pathology of white patriarchy is so nakedly revealed in Hollywood entertainments that it is rather amazing it is so rarely discussed. One hears much about adding more women or people of color to TV shows, both as actors and directors, but rarely does one hear a discussion about the Orientalism and xenophobia of Hollywood. One rarely asks why almost all crime shows demonize the poor, especially black and brown poor, and why soldiers are so fawned over. Why Arabs are always terrorists. Find me a single show that suggests the U.S. occupation of the middle east is wrong. Just one. One show that addresses the idea of American Imperialism. And, just one show where the very idea of volunteering for the military is seen as either an act of desperation born of poverty, or just a sign of nascent mental illness or a propensity for violence. That maybe, MAYBE, the desire to shoot people and play with weapons signaled a psychological problem. Not heroism but insanity. Not sacrifice but sadism. There may be one somewhere, but it will only prove the point of the overriding uniformity of opinions expressed. And, of course, why is it the working class are not participating in the creation of mass culture? Mostly the creativity of the underclass is simply appropriated and stolen. The reality of Trump and his backers is that they could only have won this election because of three or four decades of the destruction of public education and the monopoly of media and the constant saturation of information highway with the most naked Imperialist propaganda. No sane and emotionally stable person would vote for Trump or for Hillary Clinton. To endorse either, unless you yourself are a millionaire, is a sign of pathology. A sign of self loathing. Whatever the justifications, whatever version of less evilism, or whatever other cliche that has been fed to you — the inability to see the horrors of both these candidates is suggestive of mass regression. This is where I am reminded yet again of Wilhelm Reich. A man driven from the establishment and eventually into madness. But one who most clearly understood the direction of Western society. The Little Man does not know that he is little, and he is afraid of knowing it. He covers up his smallness and narrowness with illusions of strength and greatness. — Wilhelm Reich, Listen, Little Man, 1948 America cannot examine its own littleness. Its own failures and crimes. It cannot. I do not expect that to change. In fact, I expect an increasing prosecution of those who suggest this, an increasing prosecution of dissent. It was Obama, remember, who launched the fake news meme. Who introduced that idea into discourse. America continues to express a historical revisionism that excludes the genocide of Native Americans, that erases the wilful destruction of unions and socialist movements, and that glorifies the Westward expansion of Manifest Destiny. Mainstream media today is so narrow that any opinion not clearly in line with the prevailing mythology is either castigated or simply made invisible. We forget that, although freedom of speech constitutes an important victory in the battle against old restraints, modern man is in a position where much of what “he” thinks and says are the things that everybody else thinks and says; that he has not acquired the ability to think originally – that is, for himself – which alone gives meaning to his claim that nobody can interfere with the expression of his thoughts. — Eric Fromm, Escape from Freedom, 1941 This is a society of great unhappiness. But more, it is a society of conformity.They go together. America is far more conformist than it was in the 1950s. The little men and women of corporate life, in politics, in media and the arts, everywhere; these are the gatekeepers to an establishment narrative that allows no questioning of its legitimacy. Capitalism is good, socialism is bad. This last month in Arkansas, the state decided to fast track executions because they didn’t want to waste the chemicals used in lethal injection, many of which were soon to be past their sell by date. Human life is that unimportant. Punishment is the highest virtue. Americans enjoy punishment. American football is so popular because it is gladiatorial and damaging to the players. Life threatening, in fact. So much the better. Or take factory farming. Again, most Americans are aware of the brutality of factory farming. The cruelty of the mass industrial abattoir. It’s not a secret. And yet, mostly people continue consuming these products. Meats so adulterated with hormones and chemicals that 100 years ago nobody would feed this stuff to their dogs. The cruelty to our fellow creatures is astounding. There is a sort of symbolic compensation in the form of over pampering household pets. But such contradictions are to be expected. Again, if people cared, if compassion had not been eroded to this degree, we would not have Trump or Hillary. I mean look at the national political figures today from both parties. Mike Pence and Betsy DeVos, Chuck Schurmer and Mitch McConnell. If we lived in anything resembling a rational society, John McCain would be in a mental hospital getting the help he obviously needs. Look at the leading figures for the 2020 elections on the Democratic side. Andrew Cuomo and Elizabeth Warren. Both have consistently voted for war. Warren is a particularly unsavoury figure, opportunistic and smug, a woman who enthusiastically supported Obama’s drone assassinations and voted FOR sanctions against Iran. You really think a President Warren would do anything different from Obama? Less drone assassination or less muscular foreign policy? Of course not. She and Cuomo and Cory Booker and all the rest of the establishment creeps in the Democratic Party are part of the problem. NOT the solution. They are the solution to nothing. The lesson today is that it is now on the U.S. populace to wake up. It’s time. Stop accepting the official narrative and stop watching mainstream propaganda and stop turning away from the crimes of your own country. Stop the unquestioning acceptance of U.S. hagiography. Thanksgiving was not friendly Pilgrims inviting happy tribes to turkey dinner. Columbus was a psychopathic mass murderer. The founding fathers were slave owners. The U.S. revolution was economic. Here is Howard Zinn on the American Revolution… The Continental Congress, which governed the colonies through the war, was dominated by rich men, linked together in factions and compacts by business and family connections. These links connected North and South, East and West. It seemed that the majority of white colonists, who had a bit of land, or no property at all, were still better off than slaves or indentured servants or Indians, and could be wooed into the coalition of the Revolution. But when the sacrifices of war became more bitter, the privileges and safety of the rich became harder to accept. About 10 percent of the white population (an estimate of Jackson Main in The Social Structure of Revolutionary America), large landholders and merchants, held 1,000 pounds or more in personal property and 1,000 pounds in land, at the least, and these men owned nearly half the wealth of the country and held as slaves one-seventh of the country’s people. The American Revolution is sometimes said to have brought about the separation of church and state. The northern states made such declarations, but after 1776 they adopted taxes that forced everyone to support Christian teachings. William G. McLoughlin, quoting Supreme Court Justice David Brewer in 1892 that “this is a Christian nation,” says of the separation of church and state in the Revolution that it “was neither conceived of nor carried out. … Far from being left to itself, religion was imbedded into every aspect and institution of American life. A loss of curiosity, of reading, and a near complete submission to authority marks the American people today. This is not a recommendation to anything other than a genuine intellectual resistance. Of some kind, any kind. Resistance to the prevailing narratives of the system, of the ruling class. That is all. I feel the suffocating narrowness of American society today, and it is awful. It is numbing and its habitual repetitiveness in all aspects of the culture is a sign of dementia. A resistance is needed, too, to the aesthetics of domination. Neurotic white people are not the only suitable topic for drama. Nor are the caricatured portraits of the working class manufactured by white liberals (American Crime, anyone?). Aesthetic and intellectual resistance. Empty activism is counter productive. Working for Elizabeth Warren is really worse than pointless. Check your own privilege, too, white man.
