When I discovered reruns of the Avengers (the British TV series, not the Marvel superheroes) it started a lifelong love affair. The last couple of weeks have been stressful so I turned to the most recent set of audio adaptations of comic strips based on the series from @bigfinishprod. That still feels like a circuitous route but I guess it’s got to do with the licensor not allowing Big Finish to create wholly original stories. Regardless, writers Roland Moore, Sarah Grochala and John Dorney have fleshed out the brief comics stories into adaptations that completely capture the escapist, absurdist fun of the series, and made me smile over and over again. While Big Finish has done a great job reconceiving other series for more modern audiences (Space: 1999, UFO, The Prisoner, Adam Adamant Lives) I’m glad they have the sense to know when a concept doesn’t need altering. Even with Julian Wadham and Olivia Poulet taking on the iconic roles created by Patrick MacNee and Diana Rigg, it still feels absolutely like the Avengers to me. And now that im caught up on this series, I won’t feel like I need to hold off on listening to the new set due out this week, I think. I needed to listen to something lighter this week, so I picked the Avengers. This would be the REAL Avengers, based on the 1960s British TV spy series, not the Marvel superhero series. I’ve actually been a fan of the show longer than I’ve been reading superhero comics and I remember being disappointed the first time I saw the comic and saw that it wasn’t about John Steed & Mrs Peel. Sigh. I finished this story this morning on (finally!) my morning walk. It wears its comic strip origins on its sleeves, with its giant vegetation, caterpillars, and butterflies. Had some trouble getting to sleep last night and decided I needed something light and fun to help me relax. I love this series so much, and I really like Emily Woodward as Tara King. Finished the last episode! I still need to listen to the interviews at the end but this was a great set of Avengers stories. I waited a while to listen to this set—I think it came out over a year ago—but this series is one my wife enjoys as well, so we usually listen to them together on long car trips. But the pandemic meant no trips, and I needed an Avengers fix. Finished the second episode and started the third (White Heat) this morning. I’m really enjoying how the weirdness quotient seems to be increasing from story to story. First a moderately eccentric spy thriller, then a circus backdrop and now we get Steed & Mrs Peel chased through the streets of London by a giant fireball created by a diabolical mastermind!
