on my knees begging for avatar studios to do more with yangchen’s era… like everything that was going on at the time is FASCINATING to me, there’s so much you can do with the systems that were around during that time!!
like, can we add in a yangchen era to the rpg game? i don’t play it at the moment but i’d like to some day. kyoshi and roku both get lots of content for their eras, i think we need to start adding in yangchen as well!

Tale as Old as Time…
Bryke: Netflix created a hostile work environment so we left. What they’re making isn’t ATLA.
Ehasz: I reached out to Netflix to help with writing but they ghosted me and didn’t invite me to the premiere despite Kim’s best efforts. Every Recognized Cherokee Nation: Netflix disrespected our sovereignty by casting a registered member of a “pretendian” scam tribe which lets you pay to pretend you’re Cherokee regardless of whether you are or not, to facilitate the stealing of resources set aside to help disadvantaged indigenous people. Netflix responded by launching an aggressive propaganda campaign to misrepresent our objections as “just some Twitter user with no proof”. NATLA Apologists: Season 1 was really good! You guys just wanted a 1:1 remake! They did the best they could! Some things about NATLA are better than the original, even! Fans are just whining! Bryke only left to make Avatar Studios - ignore their angry parting statements about Netflix stifling creativity! Ousley is LITERALLY Sokka-coded and anyone who shares the Cherokee Nations’ objections are haters! Ignore that they brown-faced him with darker makeup! The only problem was too few episodes! The next two seasons will be even better and then haters will eat their words! I believe in Kim’s vision!
Albert Kim: I did what I was hired to do. I’m moving on and have no desire to show run two more seasons of this.

Designing Your Melody - Chapter 02: Time
Chapter 01 - Chapter 03
Marinette was once again in a state of panic. She clutched her phone to her ear as she paced around her room, tearing at her midnight blue hair with her free hand as she rambled endlessly, not giving Alya on the other end of the line a chance to get a single word in.
“I can’t believe it, Alya! Today has been so insane. First, I sleep in so I’m almost late for my meeting with Jagged Stone. Then, I nearly trample some poor guy as I’m racing to make it there on time, falling on my butt and scattering the potential designs I had drawn up all over the streets of Paris. After I finally get them all gathered up, I almost die when I ran across the street because some idiot driver didn’t see the crosswalk light was green because he was too busy talking on the phone with his head up his butt. I mean, seriously, there are laws about that kind of thing for a reason.” With a sigh, she falls back on her chaise and hugs its black decorative pillow to her chest in an attempt to comfort herself. “And then, when I finally get to the studio and meet with Jagged, I discover that I LOST ONE OF MY DESIGNS!
“I worked so hard on my portfolio and I’m such an idiot to just lose one of them. Granted, I was pretty sure that it wouldn’t be something that Jagged Stone would be interested in because the teal I had picked out for the-“
“Girl,“ Alya tries to interrupt, but Marinette’s tirade is on a roll and nothing could stop her now.
“-Accents on the jacket would have clashed with his signature purple and yellow, but still. What if someone picks it up, looks at it, and thinks that it’s just so awful that they just throw it in the trash?”
“Marinette?”
“Or what if it’s found and someone claims it as their own and they show it to Gabriel Agreste, and he hires them on the spot and they become an internationally known designer because they stole my design? And then-“
“MARINETTE!” Finally at her wit’s end with her best friends ridiculous tailspin, Alya yells to get Marinette’s attention.
Shocked into silence and her ear ringing slightly from the outburst, Marinette stops and takes a breath for to the first time in the past five minutes. “I’m sorry, Alya. Today was just such a crazy day and I don’t like the idea of my designs being out there for the world to see.”
“I get how you feel, girl, but there’s nothing you can do about it now. So instead of focusing on how your day went wrong, why don’t you focus on how it went right. How did it go with Jagged? I know he loved your designs, but did you guys settle on a concept? What can you tell me? Can I post an exclusive story on my blog?”
Marinette giggled softly. Some things never change. “I’m sorry, but I can’t give you anything yet. You know how it is. Non-Disclosure Agreement and all that. But I can tell you that Jagged’s new single is amazing!”
“You got to hear it already?” she gasped in shock. “Oh girl, I am so jelly! I can’t wait until you’re a super famous designer with all sorts of famous connections and when that day comes, you’re not allowed to forget your best friend in the entire world who loved you before you were a household name. And if you don’t give me an exclusive interview with the mind behind Jagged’s new look, I’ll post every embarrassing picture I have of you on my blog, including the pic I have of you kissing a picture of Adrien’s cologne ad back in high school when you were still obsessed over that poor, sweet, oblivious boy.”
Marinette cringed at her threat. Just remembering how completely crazy she had been in high school made her shudder in disgust. She couldn’t believe the way she had behaved at times. It had definitely been unhealthy and she was glad that she had grown up and gotten over her infatuation with her blond model friend.
After a years of unrequited pining and downright stalkerish behavior, she had finally accepted her defeat and come to terms with the fact that she and Adrien would be nothing but really good friends. And it was for the best as it would turn out.
Once she tucked her feelings for him into the darkest recesses of her heart, she had realized that he truly was an amazing friend and she was being unfair to him by trying to force him into a relationship that he truly wanted no part in. All he had wanted at the time was to have fun for the first time in his extremely sheltered life and to learn how to make friends. He wasn’t ready for a relationship with anybody, let alone the first true female friend he had made. In Marinette’s opinion, Chloe Bourjeois didn’t really count as Adrien’s friend. She was far too selfish and egotistical to truly put another person’s feelings before her own, a trait that Marinette felt was very important in a friendship.
So now, she counted Adrien a member of her inner circle and she wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize their friendship. She had taken her obsession towards Adrien and turned that laser focus on her fashion designs.
Now, a 20 year old Marinette could consider herself a relatively successful freelance designer. She still hasn’t been hired by any of the major fashion houses, but she was often contacted regarding commissions and requests that helped to support her passion. However, she was still holding out for a chance to work with her idol, Gabriel Agreste. Through her friendship with his son, she often got a heads up whenever he was holding a competition or accepting applications for designers, but so far, she hadn’t been able to do more than win a few monetary prizes for her designs and speak to the fashion icon through the screen of his assistant’s tablet.
But she wouldn’t let her phase her. One of these days, she’d create clothing that would send the fashion world into a frenzy and then the Gabriel Agreste would come crawling on his knees, begging her to work with him. But until that day came, Marinette would just have to do her best and live her life, one design at a time.
“Oh Alya,” she giggled, “you know that when the time comes, I’ll give you an exclusive interview and tell you everything I legally can.”
“Good. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, isn’t it time for us to get going? It’s almost time, right?”
Sitting up on the chaise, she glanced at the clock above her sewing desk. “Yeah, you’re right.” Standing up, she walked over to her computer chair and sat down. “I’ll see you in-game.”
Hanging up her phone and putting it on silent, she plugged it in to the charger and set it on the desk next to her keyboard. With a few keystrokes, she changed the input on her monitor from her PC to her PlayBox, the latest generation game console that she had decorated with little ladybug stickers and affectionately called Tiki. She picked up her red controller, crossed her legs on her computer/gaming chair, and uttered the words she always jokingly said whenever she turned on her console:
“Tiki, spots on.”

Marinette had always been an avid gamer. Everyone who knew her knew that. So it came to no surprise that when her absolute favorite game, Ultimate Mecha Strike 3, came out with another sequel a two years ago, she had picked up a copy for herself the day it came out.
One of the features she had been most excited about with the new version was the idea that it would be a MMO fighting game. But it wasn’t just fighting. It had exploration, collectables, seasonal events, and player versus player tournaments. It was a dream come true for Marinette. Looking back at the side-scrolling fighting game she had loved so much in high school, she couldn’t help but make comparisons between herself and the game. The original version was great, but the new and improved game was so different, but so much better.
The first weekend after Ultimate Mecha Strike 4 had been released, Adrien had invited her to play together online. Knowing how much of a gamer that he himself was, she readily agreed, wanting someone else with similar passion to play with her. And she had had a BLAST. They had spent hours that weekend exploring the game mechanics, gathering collectible, taking out enemies, and just learning the game. After a few weeks of their friends blowing off plans to play video games, Nino and Alya picked up their own copies of the game and started playing with them.
Over time, their inseparable team had created a long standing tradition that every Friday night, they would get together online and play. Because they played so much and had such a great rapport amongst themselves, they eventually rose to the top of the leaderboards for tournaments.
Then, a year ago, for the one year anniversary of the release of Ultimate Mecha Strike 4, the creators released a new feature that changed the game for Marinette: clans. With the introduction of clans, she and her friends were an officially recognized team and they qualified for their own hideout where they could trade and share equipment, treasures, and in game credits. But unfortunately, it was also a double edged sword because now, her clan, “Miraculous Kwami”, was bombarded with membership requests. She and her friends had agreed that they wouldn’t allow just anyone to join them. They had to be able to keep up with them and contribute to their clan.
So after careful selection and intense tryouts, she and her three friends were joined by four other clan members. One of the requirements that was set in stone for their clan was that they got together every Friday night at 7pm. Allowances were made for certain circumstances, but it was agreed that they would play as much as possible together. To Marinette, it wasn’t a big deal to spend a minimum of one night a week with her best friends.
It was with a smile on her face that she placed her headset on her head while she loaded her game. Selecting her avatar, she couldn’t help but be excited to start killing noobs. Poor players who didn’t know that she was the legendary “Ladybug” would soon discover that even though her avatar was small in build, she was built for speed and accuracy.
When the player selection screen finally loaded onto her screen, she looked at her avatar in admiration. The countless hours she had spent on this one character had led to the birth of this elite player. Her mecha was a bright, fire engine red, embellished with black pads on its shoulders, elbows, and knees. On its back, was a pair of swords, their scabbards the same red as its suit and their hilts wrapped with black leather. Its cockpit was a red helmet with two black circles around the eyes and a set of short antennae sprouting from the forehead area. Black elbow length gloves and knee length combat boots completed the ensemble.
With one final smile at her online persona, she pressed a button on her controller and loaded her character. She watched as her clan’s headquarters loaded on the screen: an old, abandoned shrine. Seeing the dilapidated tori gates, she felt a thrill run up her spine in anticipation.
And, it would appear that she wasn’t the first to arrive tonight.
She walked her avatar toward her other clanmate, clad in a dark teal and aqua mecha, a black and teal bow strapped to its back, and a vaguely reptilian looking cockpit. He must have seen the notification pop up on his screen announcing her arrival, because he turned around and bowed.
“Good evening, Lady luck,” he greeted her, his soft voice filtering through her headphones.
“Hi there, Viperion.” She waved. “Long time, no see”
Once again, she smiled. Tonight was going to be a fun night.

Chapter 03
*Hey everyone, first and foremost, I’d like to say thank you so much for the fantastic response to chapter one. I’m blown away at how supportive you all have been. It’s keeping me going and made me want to get this chapter out to you all as soon as I could.
In regards to Ultimate Mecha Strike 4, think of it as a kind of mix between Destiny 2, Fortnite, and the original Mecha Strike 3 featured in the cartoon. The avatars aren’t completely humanoid, but they’re kind of like armor that the characters wear and control from within. I’m sure I’m not explaining it properly, but it makes sense in my head haha.
Next chapter will focus primarily on Luka, because he’s just so adorable and I can’t wait to torture him with a slow burn, mistaken identity, near miss romance with our resident goofball.
Until next time!*

Okay. I want to talk about the netlix live action remake of ATLA for a minute here because there are a lot of rumors flying around right now and they are just that- rumors.
Here’s what we know: Mike and Bryan have left the production of the show over vaguely referenced “creative differences.”
That’s it. That is all we know that is verifiable. Now, fandomwire (a notorious clickbait site) has published an article listing some “rumored” reasons they left, and there’s some posts spreading similar information around twitter.
I cannot emphasize enough that these are unverified sources. Meaning there is no proof, zero evidence, nothing substantial whatsoever, to confirm the information. Please approach these sources with a healthy dose of skepticism.
That said, I do want to address the rumored reasons because, with one exception, there’s some nuance to them and they don’t necessarily mean the show is a lost cause if those are the reasons Bryke left. So let’s get into it:
Rumor #1: Netflix wants to open casting to white people.
Let’s get the exception out of the way- one of the rumors is that Netflix wants to consider white people to be cast in the roles. This is inexcusable and I hope very badly that it isn’t true. I think I’d be fine with someone of mixed heritage being cast, but no one who is predominantly white should be playing any of these characters. I would hope that Hollywood would have learned it’s lesson from the backlash they’ve received against previously whitewashed projects, but...we’ll see. However, if they do whitewash the cast of the ATLA remake I strongly suggest not watching it or at the very least pirating it. Racism should not be supported financially.
Rumor #2: Netflix wants to age up the cast.
.........I’mma be honest, I don’t know why anyone is surprised that this is a possibility. This rumor, I think, is one of the most believable of the bunch and I don’t think anyone should be shocked by it for a couple of reasons. The biggest one is child labor laws. Production of a demanding show, like ATLA is bound to be, will probably require long hours, and child actors have certain restrictions set around them which limits how much and what they’re able to do. It is significantly easier for a studio to hire adults to play teenage roles, and this is quite frankly the biggest reason you so often see actors 18+ playing teenagers. Actually aging up the characters is the more honest thing to do, rather than trying to convince me some 20-something is actually 14.
Another big reason I can see them wanting to age up the cast is the martial arts component of ATLA. See with animation, all you have to do is hire a single martial arts expert and consult with him for how the fights should be staged and choreographed. Sifu Kisu did excellent work on the animated show. But with live action...you need actors who can do these things. You need a whole cast of people who are either already trained or are willing to go through some pretty extensive training to prepare for their roles. And this is just much easier if you go after adult actors.
I get that it’s potentially disappointing, but from a practical standpoint, I can see why Netflix would want to go this route.
The other reason, of course, is to have an excuse to darken the tone, which leads us into...
Rumor #3: Netflix wants to darken the tone of the show.
We live in a post-game of thrones world, and edgy and dark is trendy right now. However, changing certain aspects of ATLA is not inherently bad thing. There is no point in remaking Avatar if you’re just going to do a shot-for-shot remake of the cartoon. I can watch the cartoon, it’s right there, and it’s going to be superior every time. This is the problem with the live action Disney remakes- they’re soulless shells of the original animated films trying to copy them scene-by-scene in a shameless attempt to make money. The live action Disney films add very little and the few changes they make are inconsequential and certainly not enough to justify the live action film’s existence (Maleficent and maybe Cinderella being the only exceptions). I despise these live action Disney films on principle.
So my point being- there was never a reason to remake ATLA in live action unless they were going to change things. Now, the original cartoon is excellent and there’s not much about it that needs changing. There’s not much about it I’d want to change. And yet- if you’re going to remake it, you have to. You have to justify why this story needs to be told again and why it needs to be told in live action. Shot-for-shot remakes just don’t do that.
So while a significant change in tone might not be what some people are hoping for, it would at least be a reason to have re-made it. Now, I agree that dark is not inherently good. But it’s not inherently bad, either. (Keep in mind we also don’t know if the specifics of this rumor are even true...there could very well be other changes Netflix wanted to make that Bryke were against. We don’t actually know.) Nevertheless, some kind of significant change from the original can work to justify the live action show’s existence. So I’m okay with that, even if it turns out bad. The cartoon will always exist, but at least the live action show will have tried to be its own thing. I would rather watch a bad film/show that tried to have it’s own creative vision than a soulless cash grab catering to nostalgia every time.
(This is also why The Last Jedi is a superior film to The Rise of Skywalker DON’T @ ME).
Rumor #4: The budget.
..............you know actually there’s not much to say here. Netflix probably wants to cut costs, Bryke probably didn’t, money ruins everything.
In Conclusion:
I do think the live action show is going to suffer without Bryke guiding it, and I do think we may get a worse show as a result. That said, please be skeptical about rumors, please don’t make assumptions without confirmed information, and be open to the possibility that changing things may not inherently be a bad thing. There are a lot of possible, and frankly practical, reasons why these rumored changes may be made.
Obviously with the exception of whitewashing. There is no excuse or justification for that. Can’t say that enough. Do not whitewash this show oh my god.

i did an A:TLA rewatch and took notes because that’s just what i do, and here’s the notes if anyone wants to see my thoughts
i haven't watched atla since about a year before korra started airing, so like, around 2011. i should also mention that i never watched korra through to the end, but i guess i'll do that after this. if i feel like it. i do know that the biggest bottles were never popped
i have such a clear memory of the first episode. it must've been on nickelodeon pretty often, even though when it was airing, i only watched it occasionally. i remember they also aired the library episode super often.
aang's voice is so tiny and sweet
i gotta turn off my dumb adult brain and put my dumb kid brain back on so i can better appreciate the nickelodeonness of it all
sokka and zuko's first interaction.......
zuko's intimidating approach and then his tiny teen voice
SOKKA AND ZUKO'S SECOND INTERACTION............
zuko's like "i'm going home." with aang. he must be feeling an incredible mixture of feelings, thinking he has the avatar and can reclaim his Honor. but he also must be terrified to go back, and in disbelief... fortunately he's not going home like he said and there are even more confused feelings in between
i just remembered that iroh's voice actor dies between seasons :(
thinking a lot about dante basco... no thoughts in particular, just a lot of them... and how he shipped zutara lmao
"my troubles cannot be soaked away!"
hei bai looks like a ben 10
mounts list (added to as i progressed through the series): zuko's rhinos. earth armored ostriches. metal noshing mole. north pole goatyak. azula and friends' fur geckos. sabertooth moose lion if you're not a wimp. appa-sized beetle. moose with aquatic features. Eel Hound.
you can't out-mom-friend katara. even when she's yelling and being reckless
it's true... airbenders are weak to nets.
the n*tfli* captions are making several mistakes. eat my ass ne*f*ix and hire me to do flawless captioning instead you dumb fucks
YEAH! even by episode 13 in season 1 we already know zuko is a good boy! well also by episode 12. and earlier. well i've seen the series before.
i've just learned that zach tyler eisen is the voice of aang and i have to give him huge props for having the perfect voice. i pay a lot of attention to voice acting, usually in a nitpicky way, and i've never heard an english voice actor whose voice is perfect on the level of ikue ohtani... and when he was like 12 years old. incredible. i'm not being remotely sarcastic
i gotta be 100% honest. i had completely forgotten the existence of zhao and that he's actually a pretty important character, at least in season 1. also his voice actor is pretty good. generally the voice acting is good in this show, and i'm picky.
god the animation where aang makes one catapult catapult the other is so good. also appa just picked up and grabbed a guy. with his fist. wait how many toes does appa have? is that 18 in total? also appa has scutes on his ventrum. anyway i love that appa can pick up and grab a guy but generally chooses not to. gives it more weight when he does choose to
zuko tells turtle seals to be quiet and then touches them unkindly :(
zuko busted out of katara's ice orb instead of melting it :\
zuko put his hood up like iroh told him to but aang just has his naked bald head in the snowy cold :(
seeing zhao grab and bag the moon spirit fish made me feel sick. such a foul act
god. the quality rope. i noticed sokka mention it and was like, "was this a chekhov's gun or a red herring" and then a few minutes later there was a pointed pan over to the quality rope.
anyway examining the quality of the voice acting here leads me to a thesis i might gather evidence to prove: american english voice acting for cartoons is far higher quality than american english voice acting for anime dubs. or is that just something obvious that everyone already agrees on
anyway anyway, the episode ended without the quality rope being put to use. unless i missed it, which is entirely possible.
jesus i heard azula's first lines and got an instant flashback to all the tumblr drama about grey delisle and her tumblr account and how she pretended it wasn't hers or something let's just erase all of this from my brain right now
this is kind of out of nowhere and borderline inappropriate but i'm glad characters in avatar are illustrated with nipples when they're shirtless... it always disturbs me a tiny bit when shirtless characters are depicted with zero nipple, not even a hint of nipple. (Aladdin.) not just because it implicitly stigmatizes something everyone has, but also because this scenario always plays in my head where it's like, a little kid sees a cartoon character without nipples and they think, "so i'm not supposed to have these..." and they start feeling weird and bad about themself... all you need to depict a nipple is a single unobtrusive dot. nothing visually offensive or explicit about it.
even to an audience who doesn't understand any cultural context, you can't not see the significance of zuko and iroh cutting off their topknots...
fandom seems to see sokka as the silliest one when in fact at least 40% of his entire role as a character is to be the tsukkomi
underrated moment: "you've got an elbow leech." "WHERE?! WHERE?!"
zuko should be a good boy and only steal if it's from pirates
stealy zuko stealing money and buying iroh a teapot !
god i forgot what a tiny baby voice toph has... so tiny
zuko trying really really hard but doing a bad job hammering (tears)
azula set up zuko and mai for a lucky sukebe...
when zuko's mom told him not to forget who he is, she didn't mean to remember that he's a prince and an heir as he revealed to the unsuspecting earth kingdom village. she meant to remember that he's someone with at least the base level of empathy and compassion, unlike most of his immediate family...
i still think aang's voice actor did a great job but i bet it sucks to be a young boy doing an excellent young boy voice and then when you grow up a little and presumably experience some puberty you just Cannot do the young boy voice anymore. hopefully in most cases where that happens, it's at least not abrupt
placing a bet that the writer for episode s2:e10 (the library) is different than most of the other episodes. i don't like it very much, at least in the first several minutes. if it's a name i recognize from the credits of several other episodes, i might be a bit disappointed in them. seriously, there's one stinker after another. and with such a great concept of an episode...
i didn't recognize the name of the guy who wrote this episode so i thought i was right but no, he wrote a bunch of episodes. must have been off his game for this one... either that or i'm in a very unforgiving mood and don't realize it... also when i went on wikipedia to look at who wrote which atla episodes, i learned that the animation for the show was split between two animation studios, and they're both korean. ah, i guess that doesn't mean all the animation took place overseas, as DM movie has a headquarters in the US. according to wikipedia.
oh, they're BUZZards... i get it... i gotcha.
aang with a vengeance is both scary and sad to see. but he does understand that property damage is nothing compared to a life
people who love azula are the exact same as people who love vriska: [comment redacted]
they have american birds in the avatar world. i keep hearing an eastern wood-peewee going "pee-pee-uwee" in the background :3
the serpent's pass seems geologically implausible.
sokka should really get face paint all over his face when he kisses suki. or like, the cartoonish image of when someone is covered in lipstick lip smacks, but it should be suki's makeup color
appa's been through so much and now he has to meet a boarcupine?!?! fortunately he still knows how to pick up and grab... but still :(
he touched appa's scutes and read them like a palm...
longshot translated his meaningful stares into out-loud words for katara and friends
zuko forgot that azula always lies :(
zuko should know that being redeemed in his father's eyes is the opposite of what he wants...
i LOVE aang's passionate tsungi horn dance
there are spring peepers in the fire nation
god the dripping of the rotten clams is so excessive
you know how ultrasonic humidifiers can create water vapor without heating it into steam, by vibrating it super fast? let's try that with waterbending, it'll be cool
two different bad guys have been skipped across the water like a rock
i love the fake time lapse of cleaning the river... and it showed how with pollution in real life, stopping the source of the pollution is not enough. it needs to be removed as well
sokka deserves LOTS of credit just for being able to handle a boomerang.
GOD THE SLOW PAN OVER THE BEAUTIFUL SWORD (in 3:4)
sokka also deserves LOTS of credit for being able to admit he doesn't know everything.
i managed to forget that zuko turns his back on iroh, while remembering that at some point, iroh gets buff
the voice of sokka's master is the voice of the boulder. right? right? no? are you kidding me? i suck at this
seems like kissing azula would have immediate consequences, like something melting
zuko is poorly socialized
zuko still forgot that azula always lies. even when she's being somewhat humanized in an episode like this.
so avatar roku had earthly attachments he did not let go of, presumably. such as his wife. did he have unfettered access to the avatar state? that's what i would ask him during this expositionfest if i was aang.
so sozin could do heatbending... that's amazing. i think i missed that the first time around.
that's right, zuko came back and his hair is long enough, but he hasn't recreated his topknot.
hawky is the only atla animal that poops on camera.
if you're gonna bend sweat, you might as well bend spit, and it's a little easier to obtain
wait so... is combustion man also a heatbender? i'll have to look into it later. [looked into it later: the avatar wiki has termed it "combustionbending?" are you shitting me?]
ooh it's the bloodbending episode! i'm pumped.
someone made a post about how when they watched this show and they were a kid they were thinking about how the characters are hot, and now they're watching as an adult and the characters are all tiny children... that's how i've been feeling. also season 3 episode 8 aang's voice sounds a little bit pubertous.
anyway damn this bloodbending episode is outright traumatic. good shit
oh, now zuko's topknot is back.
appa's armor covers each individual toe <:3c
i seriously misremembered the course of zuko's character development. and the timeline of the invasion in general. but now i understand that zuko has to tell his dad to eat shit face to face.
watching zuko's "zuko here" practice speech hurts 100% as much as it did the first time i saw it. and when he's delivering it to the gaang it's impossible to watch. i didn't put my hands on my head-- they just went there unbidden.
i kinda can't help picturing dante basco's face every time i hear zuko talk. the whole time. it's sometimes not optimal to know the faces of voice actors. especially when you're like me and you're not good at pushing out unwanted mental images.
what the fuck, combustion man? he just loves assassination so much you can't take back any orders. also i can't help but imagine that if you put a slice across his third eye his combustion would be fully inhibited. well i guess that's not a problem anymore.
i like that the gaang are a variety of heights, and that they're all noticeably shorter than most of the adults they meet. it just makes it feel realistic
if it was a US max security prison and prisoners were escaping they'd probably just fucking murder them
i love how when mai starts up the gondola again and azula is like "what is she DOING!" and ty lee just makes an "iunno" noise
tfw your best friend abandons you because you wouldn't let her murder her own brother
chit seng didn't get to free his girlfriend and best buddy :(
funny how azula seems almost docile when she's getting everything she wants. typical narcissist. well ok not the least bit typical.
sokka ate the rose. i remembered this scene Too clearly. but i didn't remember that.
um... was that the full moon? when katara bloodbent that guy? i should've looked at the sky... i went back and looked and still didn't see if it was the full moon. maybe the wiki knows. i don't care enough to look it up properly.
i was wondering when the melon lord would show up
none of the teens understand the obvious solution of defeating the fire lord by beating him INTO SUBMISSION (or oblivion) instead of killing him. just like in every anime fight ever. it's over when you acknowledge you've lost or you can't fight anymore, not when you die. (for the #1 best example of ending a fight the right way, see the way luffy defeats crocodile.)
so i know aang's gonna defeat the fire lord by essentially hitting him with a forced purification beam to the face and make him realize the errors of his ways or something. the fun part is how we get there
bumi bending entire houses through the air
aw i forgot the turtle island didn't have a cute face.
jyong jyong firebent a jet platform to fly around on?!
i guess the firelord can fly around like bakugou katsuki
i forgot that aang took away his firebending... and sokka hops up to him like "well, look at you, buster"
i'm glad i decided to watch this again. even if i didn't do a great job paying attention tbh. well i did spend a bit of time carving a little wooden spoon while i was watching. anyway i was thinking i wouldn't move right on to korra but rather read some of the atla comics that i know exist but have never read whatsoever. i wonder if i can find them in some kind of library...
i found the comics illegally on the internet and read a whole bunch (up until the end of the "zuko finds his mom" arc). i didn't write my thoughts down as i was reading, so i don't remember them. that's how my worthless brain works. i do remember that i found the comics satisfactory as an accurate extension of the show, and that i feel ambivalent about how azula is written/treated in the comics.
i don’t know if i feel like rewatching korra yet.

Anniversary Month - A Himmmm Blind Item
If you’re familiar with the CDAN blog, then you’ll know that Enty isn’t the only one who posts there. There’s also a guy who goes by the alias Himmmm who is an industry insider. This person doesn’t just write short blind item’s, but long articles exposing people. Some think it’s an actor. Some even thought that it was Robert Downey Jr, who denied it. He recently wrote another post and Emma was mentioned in it.
This is a tough one to write, simply for the challenge of not giving it away and damaging anything before it happens.  It's amazing it has been kept this quiet for so long, but I'm sure it'll leak out after the Oscars.  Anything this big is bound to. Like the old saying goes: "If you want to keep a secret between three people in Hollywood – two of them better be dead".  No, there's no murders or deaths surrounding this film, yet.  But the story it is based on sure had plenty. What I'm talking about is a movie.  A big movie that will be one of those rarities that is both Oscar lure and box office success.  A+ list all the way, big budgets, big talent, and every A+ list actress/actor in the industry wanting to be a part of it.  The secrecy around it is unlike anything in history.  They're not even using a fake name as cover, it's totally off-book.  Right now, they have more attorneys involved in this project than filmmakers, crew, or elements.  Maybe the first time in history a Hollywood studio has employed publicists to PREVENT people from knowing about it.  They even hired social media ninjas to comb the internet to shoot down and remove mentions of it.  I even wonder if it'll stay long on CDAN.  I've not seen this much secrecy on a film since Jurassic Park.  Even Avengers, or Star Wars Force Awakens wasn't this paranoid.  So why all the fuss?
It's a porno. Yep.  Uh-huh.  A porno.  Okay, to be fair – it's about a porno star, not an actual porno.  So if you're thinking Boogie Nights or those Deep Throat – Linda Lovelace films, you're asking: So what? What's the big deal? They even have The Deuce on HBO.  Why so secretive? Because comparing this film project to those is like comparing Plan 9 From Outer Space or Lost In Space to the entire Star Wars saga or Avatar.  Point is that this project is so huge and prestigious that it makes the others look like a "Skin-emax" soft core indie film.  Mostly though, it is because in the current social/scandal climate surrounding Hollywood these days they put the lock-down on this project for good reason.  They don't want leaks leading to people accusing the filmmakers of being tone-deaf insensitive; and they also absolutely do not want to get flooded by every perv in Hollywood trying to get a part or be part of it.  A single casting couch rumor on this project would torpedo it.   So they've gone to insane lengths to protect it.  Not long ago, this (disgraced A list director/Brett Ratner) was set to do a big-budget adult-themed project (about a permanent A list celebrity/Hefner Film) that got torpedoed over his abuse accusations.  When a studio already has tens of millions sunk in a project, they cannot let that happen. Especially in high-dollar ironclad play-or-pay deals (not to be confused with pay-for-play, tit-for-tat, barter, couching, or land yachting). It's like this: This movie is about one very specific female actress who was known mainly in the 1980s era of porn.  It is a biopic in that sense.  But her fame was such in her time that she crossed over to more mainstream top-shelf publications, and even television interviews. Possibly the most beautiful all-American girl next door to ever have a hardcore career.  If you're thinking it is (former underage porn star/Traci Lords) you would be wrong.  But she's a featured character in it too.   Thing is, the star of the story disappeared. Vanished into thin air after her last film.  Not vanished dead, because she went on to have a different life.  She went to law school, became an attorney, changed her name and had a nice family.  Typical soccer mom, Sunday-school teacher, holly homemaker type.  Until a few years ago when she was contacted by people who represented the last big mafia family. They were looking to sell their holdings in porn to a legit media company for big bucks.  Problem is, she was one of their most popular stars and she had a unique contract in her day (which allegedly she co-wrote herself back then with her law professor).  She quit and vanished from porn due to the mob taking over her porn studio, and killing many of the owners of it.  Years later, turns out she was owed millions in back royalties – and her contract was still legally enforceable.  The legit media buyers wouldn't proceed without her signature on a new contract; or her accepting a settlement; or…her death certificate.  Yep.  The mob had to either pay her or kill her.  Which was tricky to do, because even if they found her – the FBI still wanted to bring her in as a witness against the mob hits of her bosses.  Then it got ugly for her, and turned into quite a ride.  Turns out, she lived and prevailed.  Using her brilliance instead of her body.  But it was one hell of a bumpy ride. Best of all? It was ALL TRUE.  It resulted in the FBI actually getting plea deals with mobsters; clearing 30 year-old mob hit murders; and solving money laundering cases worth tons of money globally.  The legit media company got the old porn library titles and reaped a billion from it.  And it all really happened.  She also got her money, and peace. It's one of the best scripts to come through Hollywood in decades, and has an amazing role for the lead actress.  Best of all it includes life rights, and the lady ex-porn star's willingness to promote it.  It is a package that includes documentaries, media stories, and specials.  The studio that bought it agreed to use cross-promotion synergy from many of their media divisions to tell her story.  In any era of the entertainment industry it would be a welcome change for such great material and a big project.  But, as you all know – this isn't any era. It is a very sensitive era, especially telling women's stories, porn stories, and having lots of sex and nudity on a project. If the project isn't done right, in the right tone with the right people? It'll be destroyed before it ever opens purely by social media, rumors, and speculations from knee-jerkers who will attack it without any idea of it.  That has happened or nearly happened many times in the past.  So the conglomerate/studio who is producing it has set up a massive legal, security, and IT security team that would rival a government's.  Everything to do with the project is kept on off-line isolated secure computers.  Nothing is allowed to be taken in, or out.   They do not even let the team working on the movie bring in mobile phones or devices.  An entire 25% of the studio's legal staff are devoted to this one project.  Clearing rights, contracts, and mostly NDA's that would make an intelligence agency jealous.  The punishment for violation by actors? So severe and massive that it would basically blacklist and possibly bankrupt not just the actor, but their agents and managers.  It's that extreme.  But few would risk that anyway, since even (permanent A list mostly movie actress/Meryl Streep) has supposedly offered to do a small role in the project for scale just to be part of it. Somehow, I don't think they want her for the lead. Of course, nothing is totally foolproof or totally private.  When the studio (they have wide ranging entertainment industries/Warner) first pre-emptively gobbled up the rights to it a year ago, they originally did it with this star (disgraced former A list mostly movie actor/Kevin Space) in mind for the older male lead.  Whoops. Then when this company (disgraced A list director's company/Ratpac Dune) got slammed in scandal, the studio had to find a quick co-financing partner.  Whoops again.  So they shared the project with a few select investors.  They too were subject to the legal lockdown but the studio needs them more than they need the studio, so not much threat there.  Interestingly, one investor stepped right up and wrote the studio a blank check because the project is so good.  Recently, the investor swallowed up the entire project, buying the rights from the studio, and has threatened to take it to (a studio that owns a theme park/Universal) is this studio doesn't shape up. The producers got the best director (A lister who had a very good 2017/Christopher Nolan) for this project.  As picky as he is, he jumped at this project.  He's not known for his heartfelt movies, but with this script and his recent hit (Dunkirk) he's given wide berth.  He's one of the few that could be trusted with this material, and do it proper without risk of any problems derailing it. The studio used this project as bait to try and lure him to other projects (his old project/Batman), but he won't commit to those.  Meanwhile, the studio and director have held semi-formal casting sessions very, very, very secretly. Every actress is told to bring an attorney or manager; a studio attorney is present; a female casting director; and every meeting is video recorded.  All because of the "casting couch" temptations – not by the director, but by eager actresses.  Also due to the adult nature of the story, and the fact that it will have reams of nudity and sex.  This will not be one of those PG-13 movies about sex, it'll be very true to the script.  This actress (A list mostly movie actress who worked with the director before/Ane Hathaway) already said she'd do anything for the lead; as did (foreign born A- list mostly movie actress/Marion Cotillard), and (foreign born B+ list mostly movie actress who was barely old enough to drive when that gross French actor had sex with her before casting her/Melanie Laurent), and (A+ list mostly movie actress who is an Oscar winner/nominee/Jennifer Lawrence), and (A list mostly movie actress who is an Oscar winner/nominee/Jessica Chastain).  It's crazy, but only one of those even has a shot at the lead.  Even (former A+ list mostly movie actress/America's sweetheart/Sandra Bullock) and (foreign born A- list mostly movie actress who had a franchise back in the day and could use a career boost/Emma Watson) have told their agents to get them auditions.  Actresses who "never read" or audition are jumping at it. These actresses are offering to work for scale, do anything required onscreen, and sign unprecedented promotion agreements.  This actress (foreign born A list mostly movie actress who is a recent Oscar nominee/Margot Robbie) has already auditioned for a supporting role.   Funny enough, this actress (former A list singer/number one box office star in a different country/Jessica Simpson) auditioned for the same role.  I don't think it'll be a fair fight to see who wins that one although I can see the box-office appeal of the latter's scenes being a big draw.  I've heard (A-/B+ list mostly movie actress who was married to a celebrity offspring/Diane Lane) has given one of the best reads thus far.  For male leads, this actor (foreign born A+ list mostly movie actor/Christian Bale) has said he too would waive his fee, and possibly return to a franchise for the studio.  Guess he's getting pumped up for it.  Meanwhile, it's said (permanent A list mostly movie actor who started in television and had a nice run there/George Clooney), and (permanent A list mostly movie actor despite his relatively young age/Leonardo DiCaprio),  and this actor (permanent A list mostly movie actor who has made a ton of money in a superhero franchise/Robert Downey Jr.) have all agreed to audition and read.  I cannot tell you how unusual that is.  It is one of the rare times lately when the material really seems to be king (and not how many toys you can sell – although toys related to this movie sure wouldn't be sold in Wal-Mart). During the hoopla around the Golden Globes, many A+ listers were fighting the urge to discuss the project though they knew the others knew.  Sort of like a secret club.  Many actresses used it as a cover story to happen to be in town at the same time auditions were ongoing.   Likewise, during the coming Oscars week, the director and studio will be wrapping up major casting under the same cover of people all being in town.  Yes, it is that big of a deal.  I personally cannot wait, and hope it comes off without a hitch.  We probably won't have to wait too long.  Any project with that much heat will get a quick greenlight.   That's the sexiest thing of all.  Especially if you're producing it.

Bad, Good, Grey entertainment
Okay so there’s been a lot of pedo talk about various forms of entertainment and I want to set the record straight on what we are dealing with here.
Toddler’s and Tiaras/Dance Moms/Little Miss Sunshine/ and Honey Boo Boo probably:
No one with empathy for children or just humanity in general liked those shows. Those shows were popular and went on for several seasons because the production costs were low and the reality television audience is very passive, very addicted to drama, and love watching freak shows.
You can’t find a audience more entertained by human suffering than the people that love watching reality shows.
The success of those shows is not an indictment of America, especially Little Miss Sunshine which is a movie that no one has seen. If you defend Cuties by saying that Little Miss Sunshine had something like that in the third act I have to respond with “No one who isn’t a hipster douchebag or a film reviewer has seen the ending to that film”
Normal people don’t watch shit like that. Do you even remember the trailers? I do! I saw a review for it either and it looked like the cure for insomnia.
The average person thinks Honey Boo Boo was the worst, they think dance moms is for sociopaths who like seeing little girls cry, and they think Toddler’s and Tiara’s are for pedophiles.
Big Mouth:
Big Mouth is a coming of age show for adults and it seems mostly like a thinly veiled excuse to watch westernized lolita and shota soft core porn, it might be that but the big problem with calling Big Mouth fans pedos is that big Mouth is basically like every other raunchy adult comedy, including the sacred cow South Park.
There’s not a lot of stuff that Big Mouth has done that South Park hasn’t also done and in standard American fashion the art style is more repulsive than endearing and good hentai lives and dies on how well the human body is drawn.
You have to have a strong understanding of the human anatomy just so you can bend those rules for unrealistic proportions and still have people invested in the quality of your work. It’s real fucking work drawing good looking pornography.
Big Mouth isn’t drawn like a show that loves the human body. It’s drawn like a show that kind of sees the body as something gross and it’s half played off for laughs while the other half is reassurance that you’re relatively normal.
If you were going to make a show about a subject matter like this, you probably can’t do worse than Big Mouth and you probably can’t do any better either.
Cuties:
Cuties exist supposedly as a way to spark a conversation about how we sexualize young girls. It’s from France so it’s probably more relevant there than it is here but not many people are making that argument. I would make that argument though. After all, France is where the infamous novel “Lolita” was originally published (although to be fair it was written by a Russian).
French culture is extremely sex positive and the plot is about a Somalian girl acclimating to a dance group that would only exist in the western world and would have the most acceptance in France.
The mass immigration of people from the Middle East created a culture clash in France and other places where people who abandoned religion have to butt heads with people for whom religion is basically everything.
Sexuality is condemned in fundamentalist Islamic culture, especially the sexuality of women. I could go on for awhile talking about my theories why and how it speaks to a series of social, emotional, and mental disorders hidden within the members of the Islamic faith but that’s a conversation for a different subject.
America has problems with sex and sexuality but lets face it, if the Somalian girl was Christian instead of Muslim and set in America there wouldn’t be a film or alternatively there would be a film but it would just be Mean Girls.
Most stories about sexuality and coming of age is usually about riding that line between being liberated but not so far out that you fall in with bad people who want to exploit your sexuality for profit, physically abuse you for pleasure, or give you a disease that will forever lower your quality of life if not be the lead cause of your own death.
Many stories of sex are about the regret of even having it or having had it with the wrong people or refusing to have it with the right one until it was too late.
The real question is “Is Cuties truly a satire of french culture?”
It can’t be satire of American culture because the abuse of children is met with public derision and disgust when it’s brought to their attention. America is still very religious and the inherently conservative nature of islamic culture can fit within America with only modifications to how it views the concept of punishment for breaking religious rules.
In order for Cuties to be a commentary on how America sees the sexuality of girls it would have to be pro pedophilia because the antagonist that’s being criticized would be the religious faith and not the hedonism of the Cuties.
This can however be an critique on how France’s sexual openess is just an excuse for debauchery and sexual exploitation.
Only the French can say for sure or not, I can’t say if that’s a fair critique, my investigations has led to people affirming that French people are “More honest about romance and sex” which is distressingly vague given the subject matter but I don’t know where the french draw the line so I’ll leave it at that.
In any case the production of the film regardless of intent is child abuse. Either they exploited the pre-existing sexuality of young girls or they sexualized young girls specifically for the film. Effectively grooming them to be sex pots for the purposes of authenticity. They had hundreds of kids tryout for this as well.
How many of those children have been raped before or during the production of the film? Even when a child is being hired for a G rated kid’s film or show there’s still a high chance that someone on set, in the studio, or in Hollywood has sexually touched the kids, sometimes with the consent of the parents (I mean the parents get all the money, if you were a selfish prick willing to make your child famous so you could get rich, would you care if Dan Schneider touched your daughter?)
It’s massively irresponsible at best and at worst, part of the film’s message relied on throwing actual little girl’s into the lion’s den to make a point about how immoral and corrupt french people are.
It got an award at Sundance. The co-founder of Sundance is a confirmed pedophile. If the intent of the film is to oust french people and non religious people as nonces and nonce enablers well mission accomplished I guess!
I’ve never seen a film throw everyone that liked it under the bus.
Well. Does Freddy Got Fingered count? I digress.
That’s the conversation one is supposed to have about Cuties. I get really fucking annoyed when people say “we need to have a conversation about this.” or “it’s a conversation starter.” but they don’t really initiate a conversation and they use that phrase to end the conversation they are currently in so it’s a lot of bullshit.
We’re done talking about Cuties but we’re not done here yet.
Hololive:
Some person named Brittany made some video where she took shots at Shark hololive girl. Said the person was Lolibait and that she had an audience of 40 year old men.
Where does one begin?
Apparently this person has done this before. I keep thinking of Jessica Valenti which is another person so clearly what this person did or does has been lost to me. I can only assume it involved gamergate or Donald Trump because all roads lead to those two subjects for some bizarre reason.
But that’s the past. Right now is what matters and right now you can’t just make a video saying that someone makes content exclusively for pedophiles which is what she did. That was some Keemstar level shit right there and I’m under the impression no one will make her regret that choice. Everybody always talks about actions having consequences but it appears like only certain people suffer from the consequences.
But we’ll see.
She talked about Hololive like it was another Project Melody. Unfortunately for her it’s not, It’s a real business and a real business is designed to deal with defamation in a serious way so things could get ugly if Yagoo actually thinks his ladies are being threatened by drama mongers.
These vtubers are doing really well. Pokimane deciding to become a vtuber that is just her normal self but animated is boomer level imitation and extremely funny.
The appeal isn’t that they’re animated by the way, the appeal is that they’re fun people doing streams. The animation works by letting the audience create a para social relationship with a fictional character of sorts so that the actress can have a private life while still maintaining a streaming setup that’s very personable for the audience.
This is a meaningful evolution of an online persona.
The only real downside is that anyone who wanted to have an animated avatar in general will be defined as a vtuber when that may not be the intention of the streamer.
I’m just waiting for one of these girls to be part of an ARG.
Okay so to wrap up:
Reality shows are trash and always have been.
Indie Films are also trash and only pretentious douche bags like them.
What happens in France should stay in France.
and Hololive is GOAT but tragedy of the commons is still a thing.

The Actors Who Have Played Batman
http://bit.ly/2JqYBS9
We take a look back at the 8 crusading actors who’ve played Batman in TV and the movies, as well as his animated avatars!
facebook
twitter
tumblr
Holy revolving door, Batman! The Caped Crusader has been portrayed by more actors than any other superhero in movie history – eight to be exact. Most have lasted for just one film. But after The Dark Knight Rises, Christian Bale has become the first man to have played Bruce Wayne and his alter-ego more than twice on the silver screen. He didn’t have much competition – Michael Keaton was the only other actor to reprise the role at the time.
Ben Affleck tied Bale for appearances as Batman with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, his Suicide Squad cameo, and 2017's Justice League. That run will not extend to a fourth film, though, as Affleck has exited the role.
But before anymore history is made with Matt Reeves' upcoming take on the Dark Knight (where Bruce Wayne might be played by Robert Pattinson or Nicholas Hoult according to recent reports), let’s take a look at the men who have been Batman.
Tumblr media
1. Lewis G. Wilson
Wilson was the first and youngest actor ever to play the adult Batman, and also the least successful. At 23, the unknown thespian donned the cape and the cowl in the 15-part 1943 Columbia serial Batman. While he looked the part of the dashing playboy, his physique was more Danny DeVito as the Penguin. One critic described Wilson as “thick about the middle.” Maybe that was why he wore his utility belt just below his chest. Critics also complained that his voice was too high and that he had a Boston accent. That, of course, wouldn’t be the last time someone complained about Batman’s voice.

After Batman, Wilson’s career went nowhere. Most of his roles went uncredited. His next biggest movie part was probably in the 1951 cult classic Bowanga Bowanga. A few years later he was out of showbiz altogether. His son, Michael G. Wilson, however, fared better in Hollywood, becoming the executive producer of the James Bond series. Lewis G. Wilson died in 2000.

2. Robert Lowery
Lowery took over the role in the follow-up serial, 1949’s Batman & Robin. Unlike Lewis, Lowery, 36 at the time, was a veteran actor, having already appeared in The Mark Of Zorro (1940), The Mummy's Ghost (1944), and Dangerous Passage (1944). He also filled out the Batsuit better than Lewis, with his utility belt hanging where you would expect it on a non-octogenarian.

Though Lowery never played Batman in another movie, he did get to wear the cape once more and make superhero history in the process. In 1956 he guest-starred on an episode of The Adventures of Superman, marking the first time a Batman actor shared screen time with a Superman actor. (The two also appeared together in their pre-superhero days, in a WWII anti-VD propaganda film called Sex Hygiene).
After Batman, Lowrey enjoyed another 20 years in movies and TV. He died in 1971.

3. Adam West
The man logging the most hours in the Batcave, of course, was William West Anderson, whom you probably know better as Adam West. Either you love him for his goofy charm or hate him for blemishing the Bat’s image for several decades. His campy, over-the-top portrayal of Gotham’s Guardian infiltrated nearly every medium, including a 1966 movie and several animated series.

Legend has it producer William Dozier cast West after seeing him play a James Bond-like spy called Captain Q in a Nestlé Quik TV ad. He beat future Wonder Woman co-star Lyle Waggoner for the role. Dozier, who supposedly hated comic books, decided the only way the show would be successful was if they camped it up. So blame him.
Things would almost come full circle in 1970 when West was offered the role of James Bond in Diamonds Are Forever. West declined, later writing in his autobiography that he believed Bond should always be played by a Brit. Holy bad career moves, Batman!
After the Batman series went off the air in 1968, West was resigned to typecast hell. At one point, he was forced to make public appearances as the Caped Crusader to earn a living. Then, in 1977, he returned to the tube as Batman, doing his voice in The New Adventures Of Batman, and then on such shows as Super Friends.

West’s resurgence as a pop-culture icon began in the early '90s when he starred as a has-been TV action hero in the pilot episode of Lookwell, produced by Conan O'Brien and Robert Smigel. It wasn’t picked up but took on a cult following online (check it out here). He made regular appearances on Family Guy. as "Mayor West" before returning to voice Batman in two excellent animated features that expanded on the show's continuity, Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders and Batman vs. Two-Face (opposite William Shatner as the special guest villain). West died in 2017, but his Bat-legacy is immortal.

4. Michael Keaton
It took more than 20 years for Adam West to lose his exclusivity on Batman.
When director Tim Burton (who like Dozier was not a fan of comic books) and Michael Keaton were announced for 1989’s Batman, fans went bat-shit crazy, thinking their beloved superhero was going to get the Adam West treatment again. Keaton's casting caused such controversy that 50,000 protest letters were sent to Warner Bros.’ offices. In an effort to appease the naysayers, Batman co-creator Bob Kane was hired as the film’s creative consultant. And in case you're curious, here is Keaton, Affleck, and a long list of other great castings that fans initially thought would suck.
Other Hollywood stars considered for the role of Batman included Mel Gibson, Kevin Costner, Charlie Sheen, Pierce Brosnan, Tom Selleck, and Bill Murray. But producer Jon Peters said he cast Keaton because “The image of Batman is a big male model type, but I wanted a guy who's a real person who happens to put on this weird armor. A guy who's funny and scary. Keaton's both. He's got that explosive, insane side.''

The studio and the fans had nothing to worry about. Keaton’s performance received favorable reviews, and Batman killed at the box office. Variety magazine gushed, “Michael Keaton captures the haunted intensity of the character, and seems particularly lonely and obsessive without Robin around to share his exploits.” Keaton was rewarded by being the first actor to reprise the role on the big screen. And in 1992’s Batman Returns, Keaton again garnered positive reviews.
Of course, Keaton has now seen a career revival thanks to the spectacular Birdman, and his time as the villainous, winged Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming!
Tumblr media
5. Val Kilmer
When the Batman franchise was turned over to director Joel Schumacher, Keaton decided not to return. Daniel Day-Lewis, Ralph Fiennes, William Baldwin, and Johnny Depp were reportedly considered as replacements. But the job was won by Val Kilmer – probably the most forgettable of the modern Batmen. Go ahead – try to remember. See? You can’t.
Schumacher became interested in Kilmer for 1995’s Batman Forever after seeing him in Tombstone (in which he played Doc Holiday, who Adam West also portrayed in a movie before he did the Batman TV series). Kilmer allegedly accepted the role without even reading the script or knowing who the new director was. Schumacher quickly learned who Kilmer was, though, and the two clashed on the set. Schumacher later described Kilmer as “childish and impossible,” claiming that he fought with various crewmen and refused to speak to him for two weeks after the director asked his star to stop behaving rudely.

Kilmer’s performance got mixed reviews. As The New York Times put it, “The prime costume is now worn by Val Kilmer, who makes a good Batman but not a better one than Michael Keaton.” Bob Kane felt otherwise, saying he thought Kilmer did the best job of all the actors to have played Batman up to that point.
The movie performed better than Batman Returns at the box office, but Kilmer was destined to be a one-term Caped Crusader. Between his bad attitude and his concern that the superhero wasn’t getting as much screen time as the villains, he left the Batcave for good. Instead of filming 1997’s Batman & Robin, he did The Saint.
After Batman, Kilmer’s career headed downhill. Though it was probably 1996’s The Island of Dr. Moreau that had more to do with that than Batman Forever.
Tumblr media
6. George Clooney
George Clooney’s movie career was just taking off when he was cast in 1997’s Batman & Robin, with his breakthrough performance coming just the year before in Quentin Tarantino’s From Dusk Till Dawn. Producers probably felt they pulled off a major coup landing the soon-to-be mega-movie star. Those producers, along with Clooney, may regret that decision now.
Batman & Robin was a disaster, rife with homoeroticism, camp, and those infamous Bat-nipples. Clooney once joked that he helped to kill the franchise. “Joel Schumacher told me we never made another Batman film because Batman was gay.” The actor also called the movie “a waste of money.”
Critics and fans agreed. In 1997, Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote, “George Clooney is the big zero of the film, and should go down in history as the George Lazenby of the series.” Batman & Robin received 11 nominations at the Razzie Awards and frequently ranks among the worst films of all time. It was also the worst box office performer of the modern Batman movies. However, despite its many, many, many flaws, we will stick up for it a little...

But all that did nothing to hurt Clooney’s career. After Batman, he went on to super stardom, starring in Out of Sight (with a cameo from Michael Keaton), Three Kings, and O Brother, Where Art Thou? over the next three years alone, and he hasn't slowed down much since.

7. Christian Bale
Between Adam West and George Clooney, Batman seemed destined to remain a joke, at least when it came to live-action adaptations. Then came along Christopher Nolan. The Memento and Insomnia director was given the reins and he planned to reinvent the franchise, finally making the Dark Knight dark.
Among the early candidates for the Batman/Bruce Wayne roles were Billy Crudup, Jake Gyllenhaal, Joshua Jackson, Heath Ledger, and Cillian Murphy. But Nolan ultimately chose Christian Bale, explaining that “he has exactly the balance of darkness and light that we were looking for.”
Bale got generally favorable reviews for 2005’s Batman Begins, with several critics saying it reminded them of his brilliant turn in American Psycho. Not so brilliant, it seems, was his uber-husky Bat-voice. One reviewer compared Bale's guttural utterances to a “10-year-old putting on an ‘adult’ voice to make prank phone calls.” It got even more gravelly in 2008’s The Dark Knight, with NPR’s David Edelstein describing it as “a voice that's deeper and hammier than ever.”
Even Kevin Conroy, the man behind probably the most recognisable Batman voice, chimed in, saying at a C2E2 panel in 2010 that Bale’s voice was “ridiculous” and implored the actor to stop doing it. While The Dark Knight Rises was not as well received as 2008's sterling The Dark Knight, especially in the fan community, we still will happily come to the defense of it.
Also, Bale was crucial to the alchemy in Nolan's second Batman feature, The Dark Knight. That film is generally considered the benchmark in the superhero genre that all other movies about caped do-gooders are compared to nearly a decade later. It is also the only superhero movie to win an acting Oscar, for Heath Ledger's iconic Joker, and is considered responsible for why the Academy now nominates 10 films instead of five for Best Picture. This occurred after The Dark Knight was egregiously snubbed in 2009.

8. Will Arnett
With any other actor in the role, the presence of Batman in the 2013 cinematic smash The LEGO Movie could easily have become the sort of performance that gets neglected from lists like this. However, Arrested Development star Will Arnett brought some comedy magic to the role and landed his own spin-off movie as a result.
It helped that movie came at the perfect time in Batman’s busy cinema schedule – long enough after The Dark Knight Rises for lampooning of Bale’s gruff Batman to be entirely welcome, and far enough before Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice that Arnett’s new iteration didn’t get lost in all the hype for Ben Affleck’s debut.
The result of this perfect casting and canny scheduling was a Batman who will go down in the history books as the funniest, freshest and downright fun-est take on the character. From penning "dark" lyrics to haplessly attempting to hide his secret identity, Arnett’s Batman was a gag machine who The LEGO Movie’s younger audience really embraced.
There were knowing winks in there for adult fans too, with such as dialogue as “I only work in black – and sometimes very very dark grey" appealing to comic book fans and LEGO Batman’s painful attempts to hit a button with a Batarang surely connecting with anyone who’s ever got stuck for hours at a simple door-button in the Arkham Asylum games.
Arnett’s delivery, combined with Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s zingers, made this portrayal a quick favorite for many, and he reprised the role in The LEGO Batman Movie in 2017, to equally impressive effect. Bats is back in The LEGO Movie 2, out on February 8 and he'll get a sequel of his own at some point, too.
If you want more hilarious Arnett voice work in the meantime, check out BoJack Horseman on Netflix – you wont regret it.
Tumblr media
9. Ben Affleck
It is often said that history repeats itself, and so it did when Ben Affleck was cast in the role of Batman for Zack Snyder's controversial Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Affleck was fresh off of seeing his third directorial effort, Argo, win Best Picture at the Academy Awards, cementing one of the most grandiose career comebacks in Hollywood history. He also was in the midst of filming Gone Girl with legendary auteur David Fincher at the helm. Nevertheless, fans went apoplectic that the star of notorious flops like Gigli and Jersey Girl was now the "Bat-Fleck." The fact he appeared in the mediocre Daredevil movie from 2003 likely did him no favors.
Yet, ironically, Affleck is now generally considered the very best part of Batman v Superman. Like Michael Keaton before him, Affleck enjoyed fan adulation only a few years after intense backlash. Of course, the actual depiction of his Dark Knight in director Snyder's hands is far less universally loved. For the record, Affleck offered a solid performance as the Batman. He was neither as haunted and emotionally elusive as Michael Keaton's Bruce Wayne or as noble and psychologically broken as Christian Bale's take on the character. In fact, Affleck lacked the lived-in quality of either performer's interpretation. But what he did have is a picture-perfect physique for the role and a sense of dashing charisma that all other Bat-actors have lacked or underplayed.
read more - Batman v Superman and Batman & Robin: Two Sides of the Same Coin
Some fans have even suggested that he was the perfect Batman due to his appearance and natural charm, but he was hampered in BvS by a voice modulator no less absurd than Bale's gravely alternative, as well as a characterization of Batman that bordered on fascism, as he ambivalently murdered bad guys with gunshots, car collisions, grenades, knife stabs, and even crushing one's head in with a crate. This cruelty and the totalitarian streak was in-keeping with Frank Miller's extreme vision of the character in The Dark Knight Returns graphic novel. But that story was always a major departure from mainstream interpretations of the character. In fact, for all the visual upgrades to Affleck's Batman, his characterization completely lacked the altrusitic heroism and sense of driven purpose enjoyed by the much more humanistic (read: flawed) take offered by Christian Bale.
Justice League, for all of its behind-the-scenes problems, was something of a course correction for the DCEU and Affleck's take. It saw his Batman's evolution, apparently "inspired" by Superman's sacrifice at the end of Batman v Superman to be a more balanced hero.
Too bad the Bat-fleck's time is up. Affleck will not be returning for Matt Reeves' upcoming The Batman solo movie, which will hit theaters in 2021.
Tumblr media
The Voices of Batman
Speaking of Batman voices, there have been about as many men to voice the Caped Crusader as have portrayed him in live-action. But the bulk of the animated Batman work over the years has gone to two actors.
In real life Olan Soule was a bespectacled pencil-necked geek, but that didn’t stop him from voicing the Dark Knight in six different animated series, beginning with 1968’s The Batman/Superman Hour. His run pretty much ended when Adam West took over voicing duties in the late '70s. Soule, who also appeared in such films as The Day The Earth Stood Still and North By Northwest, died in 1994.
Unlike Soule, Kevin Conroy could probably pull off Batman in real life, but so far he’s been relegated to voice work – and quite a lot of it. Conroy began voicing the superhero in Batman: The Animated Series, which made its debut in 1992. Since then, he’s done three other Batman series, a bunch of animated movies and videogames.
read more - The Essential Episodes of Batman: The Animated Series
Others to voice Batman are Will Friedle (Batman Beyond), Rino Romano (The Batman), Diedrich Bader (Batman: The Brave And The Bold), Jeremy Sisto (Justice League: The New Frontier), Bruce Greenwood (the brilliant Young Justice), and Bruce Thomas (who voiced Batman in commercials for GM’s OnStar service and portrayed the character briefly in the live-action TV series Birds Of Prey).
But Will Arnett deserves special attention.
With any other actor in the role, the presence of Batman in the 2014 cinematic smash The Lego Movie (which we reviewed here) could easily have become the sort of performance that gets neglected from lists like this. However, Arrested Development star Will Arnett brought some comedy magic to the role and landed his own spin-off movie as a result.
It helped that movie came at the perfect time in Batman’s busy cinema schedule – long enough after The Dark Knight Rises for lampooning of Bale’s gruff Batman to be entirely welcome, and far enough before Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice that Arnett’s new iteration didn’t get lost in all the hype for Ben Affleck’s debut.
The result of this perfect casting and canny scheduling was a Batman who will go down in the history books as the funniest, freshest and downright fun-est take on the character. From penning ‘dark’ lyrics to helplessly attempting to hide his secret identity, Arnett’s Batman was a gag machine who The Lego Movie’s primary younger audience really embraced.
There were knowing winks in there for adult fans too, with such as dialogue as “I only work in black – and sometimes very, very dark grey’ appealing to comic book fans and Lego Batman’s painful attempts to hit a button with a Batarang surely connecting with anyone who’s ever got stuck for hours at a simple door-button in the Arkham Asylum games.
Arnett’s delivery, combined with Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s zingers, made this portrayal a quick favorite for many, and it was telling that no one is complained about Arnett’s reprisal in an upcoming 2017 standalone story.
In fact, The Lego Batman Movie only cemented the adoration received by Will Arnett's much more ego-centric version of Bruce Wayne. A petulant, selfish loner who secretly watches romantic comedies when no one is lookng, it is a broadly funny (and perhaps more honest?) take on a billionaire who sneaks out at night to beat up poor people. It also unabashedly referenced countless other Batman movie, comic book, and cartoon moments, which we unpack right here.
The number one Batman?
It’s probably not a worthwhile question to ask which Batman actor is the best. It’s hard to argue that Christian Bale isn’t tops among the live-action crowd (Though I’m sure there are some Adam West Michael Keaton, and Ben Affleck fans out there who might take up the cause).
Still, Bale is no Christopher Reeve, whose iconic portrayal of Superman has made replacing him a seemingly impossible task. Bale was a respectable Bruce Wayne/Batman, but the franchise can and has moved on without him. And though another half-dozen actors have resided in Wayne Manor, we have not found the definitive Batman.
Until then, Hollywood is sure to keep trying.

How to Become a 3D Avatar Meme
Ever since I played Grand Theft Auto III for Playstation 2 at the tender age of 11, I wanted to be a digital avatar. Driving down the streets of Liberty City in a stolen Rhino armored tank playing a beautiful opera act on Double Clef FM, I couldn’t help but wish the character model I spent so much time with looked a bit more like me. Later GTA games would introduce new characters with customizable features, but still the desire to literally be in the game seemed like a pipe dream.
In the future, our smart phone’s cameras will be powerful enough to digitally recreate our bodies as 3D avatars from a video or a set of photos. Until then, I’ve been experimenting with a few ways to digitize and upload myself to the cloud through as many platforms and mediums as I can. The following three step tutorial will be my most up to date method of self digitization that you can follow to make yourself into a native digital avatar.
At the end of this tutorial, you should have a digital 3D asset file representing yourself that you can leverage to create unique forms of visual content. The type of content you can make is limited only by your imagination, your level of 3D expertise and your willingness to learn. Ultimately, you will become a puppet master and your 3D avatar will be your marionette.
Step 1 – Choose your digital recreation method
You will need a 3D model of yourself in a universally recognized format such as .obj, .dae or .fbx in order to used by 3D applications such as Cinema4D, Maya, or Blender. There are several ways to create this file, and after experimenting with dozens of methods I found the following to be most approachable, accurate, and successful:
Tumblr media
Doob scanner. Image: Hannah Kaplan/YouTube
Doob3D – A 3D scanning and printing company who’s main business is to sell 3D printed figurines of clients in their preferred outfits and poses. They also offer a “digital avatar” service where they will scan you in an “a-pose” and give you a fully ready to use rigged and animated model of yourself. As a bonus, they’ll even cut out the eyeballs of your model so they can be independently animated. For those privileged enough to afford the service ($550) and visit one of their locations, this is the easiest option that provides the highest level of realism.
Tumblr media
Image: Manuel Palou
When doing a real life scan, make sure you choose an outfit that you’re comfortable representing yourself with in the metaverse. Personally, I wanted a “default character” kind of a look so I chose to do it in my underwear. I didn’t want to be a free billboard for any brand, so I got custom underwear with my username stitched in the waistband made off Etsy for the 3D scan.
Tumblr media
Image: itSeez3D/YouTube
Structure Sensor + itSeez3D – Using itSeez3D’s iPad scanning app paired with occipital’s Structure Sensor, a 3D scanning camera for mobile devices, allows you to capture people and other objects simply by recording and walking around the subject. As you walk around the subject pointing the Structure Sensor at the subject, an overlayed 3D representation of the subject gets filled out in real time. The experience feels very futuristic and impressive until you get the final output back. Unless you use it in a perfectly lit, empty studio with an excellent model the results are fairly imperfect and might require touching up in a 3D modeling application. This is the most expensive option at $500 for the sensor and at least $399 for an iPad mini, so I would only recommend this if you already have 3D modeling skills and a space to scan in.

Fiverr – Unless you already have 3D modeling skills, any other methods are going to be too difficult for you to produce a good full body avatar. Save yourself the headache and hire a professional! There’s tons of 3D modeling freelancers on Fiverr and even a specific section for “animated characters and modeling”. These artists will usually just require a few source images for them to reference while they custom sculpt a recreation. Realism may vary, but this is definitely the most economical option as most character gigs on Fiverr range from $50-$250.
Tumblr media
Morphin – If you have a smart phone with iOS or Android, many apps will create a 3D representation of yourself from a selfie. The best app in this space in my opinion is Morphin, which is a mobile based computer graphics studio that puts you in the center of your favorite memes. By simply uploading a well lit frontal selfie of your face the app will do the magic of compositing you as a 3D model rigged with the exact animations and effects of popular gifs you know and love. Download Morphin for iOS and Android here.
Step 2 – Create your digital avatar
Tumblr media
Image: Mixamo/Manuel Palou
This is the part where you receive your digital avatar and add any animation or additional customizations. If you’re like me, you probably don’t have any 3D rigging or animation skills. Luckily, the folks at Adobe bought mixamo.com, the web-based 3D character and animation creation tool, four years ago and have since made the service completely free. Just make an Adobe account and head on over to mixamo.com, upload your 3D model, and instantly get access to thousands of free, tweakable animations! As you explore the site you may recognize some animations as the mixamo library is one that I and many 3D artists leverage constantly, like the “bellydance”. Unfortunately the site hasn’t been updated with new animations in a while so the most recent cultural reference is probably “Gangam Style”.
Step 3 – Distribute your avatar
Tumblr media
The various platforms and tools your digital avatar can integrate with. Image: Manuel Palou
This is the longest and truly never ending part of this project. Almost any platform that allows you to upload custom content can be touched by your digital avatar. Personally, I’ve made an JavaScript module that allows you to render me inside of HTML, a Chrome extension that uses said JavaScript module to overlay the 3D model on the browser, a Unity Asset that makes it easy to add the model to video games, and web portal to house it all. However, the most efficient method of avatar distribution has definitely been integrating with Giphy which makes it easy to spread gifs of the 3D model across the internet. By applying and being accepted to their verified artist program, Giphy will make your content available in all the third party apps that have a Giphy powered search feature. Right now, this includes Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, Twitter, Slack, Tinder, Instagram, Discord, HipChat, iMessage, and more. Basically the entire modern internet will be able to pull up your gifs on demand by searching your Giphy username. This can lead to some fun and unexpected results:

Instagram story, twitter upload of instagram story, twitter DM of snapchat message
Now that you’ve translated your physical self to polygons, the potential is limitless. Learn a 3D modeling pipeline, get into game development, or just pan around your 3D self analyzing your body composition. To make yourself available to others, consider open sourcing or selling yourself as an asset. Ultimately, how you navigate the metaverse and choose to represent yourself is completely up to you and your creative ability.

Defining Your Ideal Clients (with Mad Libs!)
If you’re struggling to figure out who your ideal client should be, you aren’t alone. While I’d love to tell you that it’s just growing pains in the beginning, the truth is, your ideal client will evolve over time. Luckily, defining your ideal customer is a lot easier than you may think! (And as you grow, your vision for your client base will change with you.)
If you’ve done your homework, you’ve probably come across countless “Customer Avatar” worksheets from sources all over the web. There’s no doubt that this is a very – if not the most – popular way to determine your go-to clients. Some even fill out multiple avatars to understand the needs of different types of clients or customers. But, in my experience, it’s been a fruitless exercise. I’ve tried it probably 10-15 times, but never end up using these avatars in my real-life marketing and business practices. Instead, I came up with my own method… But before we get into that, let me tell you a bit about my initial journey to finding my people!
When I first started freelancing, I wasn’t exactly in a position to be choosy. (Beggars can’t be choosers, right?) My very first client as a full-time freelancer booked me for a small gig – just $200 for some basic design work. I also dabbled in social media management, copywriting, and design. Essentially – I was picking up whatever project someone was willing to hire me for, and I was doing it at a very low cost.
That’s okay!
When you’re first starting out, you need to get some experience, testimonials, and sample work under your belt before you can start charging beaucoup bucks. In your first stages, it’s more about building credibility – so it isn’t a bad idea to take on some lower-paying projects to get your feet wet and build your portfolio.
As time progressed and my business grew, I started my own website and increased my prices. I began offering a full day of brand strategy for $700. At this price point, I was attracting entrepreneurs similar to myself (though slightly more established). They were more knowledgeable and invested in their business, but still solopreneurs or small businesses with a limited budget. Still – I noticed a huge difference between the clients I first attracted (at $200) and those who were willing to pay $700 for my expertise.
Over time, my business has flourished (which I am forever grateful for), and I’ve been able to increase my prices significantly. I now charge $6,000 for a full Brand Development Contract. These are one-on-one projects that last a minimum of two months. As you can imagine, the type of entrepreneur or business willing to pay $6,000 is very different from those in the $700 range.
It’s important to note that I’m NOT saying that those beginning stage clients are bad or cheap. The same way that I was in the first stages of my brand, they were too. What you’ll come to notice as your career progresses is that the more you learn and add to your skillset, you’ll take on bigger (and more lucrative) projects. I couldn’t have possibly charged $6,000 when I started out. I was too new, too green. I lacked the knowledge, skill, and mindset that I’ve since grown into. It wasn’t until I experienced major growth in my own abilities that my business was able to reflect that same value. For premium pricing, you need to know that you can deliver. You should be confident in your offering and its value.
  (Pin for later!)
For now, my best advice if you are just starting out is – start where you are.
What works for you now will (most likely) not work for you later. Rather than daydream about where you’d like to be, pick the low-hanging fruit and work your way up the ladder! As you learn more about yourself and your brand, you’ll automatically come to know what you like or don’t like in a client.
Even so, there will be hiccups. Just this week, I had to fire a client AND turn down an $8,000 project. Would I have turned down an $8,000 project in the beginning? HELL NO. But I wouldn’t have crushed it back then either. Now that I’ve grown into my offering, it’s much easier to determine who is or isn’t a fit – and much easier to say no, even when the price is right.
Always remember: Your ideal client is REMARKABLY LIKE YOU.
The better you know yourself, the better you will understand the people who come your way.
Even at 16, when I started my first business – a small photography business – the clients who came my way were very similar to me. They could have gone to a big studio, but they valued personal services. They considered photography an art form, and didn’t trust their business in the hands of sit-and-click studios and corporate giants. They wanted something more intimate and personal, and that’s what I was able to offer them.
Now, the same is true: my clients are SO much like me. Just like I do, they consider branding to be so much more than design. Just like me, they have a deep desire to know who they truly are and to be genuinely understood.
Ask yourself, what do you have in common with your best clients?
More than likely, you’ll notice that your favorite clients are the ones who share the same values as you. You might feel like you just “get” each other, the way friends do. This is a good thing! The more yourself you are in your brand, the more you’ll naturally attract your kind of people! (And let’s be honest – that’s what we’re all secretly hoping for in our business adventures.)
Ask yourself, who needs and values what I can offer the most?
This may (and honestly SHOULD) change over time. These are often things like support, accountability, and confidence building… but as your skill set grows and you are able to offer more, you’ll notice that you attract clients on your same level.
Your offer should be CLEAR, CONCISE, and COMPELLING.
You’re the expert. It’s up to YOU to educate your clients on how and why they should do something. Your help should motivate and inspire them to reach their goals. It should engage your ideal audience emotionally, and draw them toward a like-minded movement or cause.
So how do you do this?
BE MORE YOU – and reassess your ideal client as you learn and grow.
As I mentioned earlier, I personally haven’t had a lot of luck with customer avatar worksheets. So, instead, I decided to create my very own method for figuring out who my best clients are… It’s a quick exercise that you can easily do time and time again as your business evolves. And since I like to have fun, I figured…
What better way to make important business decisions than with a game of…
Mad Libs!
Give it a shot! I’ve included my go-to Mad Libs exercise below (along with my answers, which are underlined).
My ideal client is someone who believes that brands are more than design. They have a desire to find who they are and to be who they are. This is something I’ve learned by interacting with my ideal clients: they’re good at everything they try, so they have a hard time choosing what they should do. You might call them action-takers, driven, and motivated people. They are NOT perfectionists. They value action over perfection, and they’re ready to grow their business in a big way.
What did this exercise teach you about YOUR ideal clients?

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND February 15, 2019  - HAPPY DEATH DAY 2 U, ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL, ISN’T IT ROMANTIC
Well, it looks like I’ve already gotten myself into a bind trying to write two movie columns a week, and unfortunately, this one can only be written as my time allows. It’s President’s Day weekend, incorporating Valentine’s Day on Thursday, with three new wide releases hitting theatres either on Weds or Thursday hoping to grab some early biz before the long weekend.
Also, a reminder that if you want to read my box office analysis and predictions, you can find those over at The Beat later today. (My box office preview column will post around 9:30AM on Weds.)
Tumblr media
HAPPY DEATH DAY 2 U (Universal)
Written and directed by Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day,Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones) Cast: Jessica Rothe, Rudy Modine, Israel Broussard, Rachel Matthews, Suraj Sharma, Phi Vu, Charles Aitken MPAA Rating: PG-13
The movie with the best bet of succeeding this weekend is the sequel to Universal and Blumhouse Pictures’ 2017 hit Happy Death Day with director Christopher Landon, Jessica Rothe and the rest of the cast returning… and returning… and returning. The horror version of Bill Murray’s Groundhog’s Day featured a mostly-unknown cast of young actors, including Jessica Rothe, who is destined to be a superstar, and all of them return for this sequel, which ups the ante on the original’s high-concept premise. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a chance to see the movie before opening – I plan on going Wednesday afternoon – but I really enjoyed the first movie, and I expect the sequel to be more of the same i.e. obvious but funny and not necessarily as gory as a slasher movie like this might normally be.
ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL (20thCentury Fox)
Directed by Robert Rodriguez (Spy Kids, Sin City, Predators, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Desperado and many more) Written by James Cameron, Laeta Kalogridis, Robert Rodriguez Cast: Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley, Keann Johnson, Lana Condor, Eiza Gonzalez MPAA Rating:  PG-13
Next up is an adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s popular Manga series which premiered way back in 1990 and has been a passion project for Titanic and Avatar director James Cameron to make for almost as long.  It’s definitely interesting to see Cameron work with a young upstart (by comparison) like Rodriguez, who has built quite a solid industry out of his Austin-based Troublemaker Studios, but I’m not sure if American moviegoers are nearly as gung-ho about the collaboration. The cast is generally solid with The Maze Runner star Rosa Salazar getting the title role, joined by Oscar-caliber actors like Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly and Mahershala Ali, as well as newcomer Keann Johnson. Blink and you might miss the heavily CG-ed Ed Skrein, Lana Condor, Eiza Gonzalez and Jackie Earle Haley – I think he plays the Dogmaster. Reviews have generally been mixed but I really didn’t like it much at all (see my review below) and I’m not sure if moviegoers will feel too differently, as this is going to be a divisive movie. I’m not even sure if and how fans of the Manga will enjoy seeing it brought to life, but that’s really going to be seen for sure after its extended opening weekend that runs from Thursday through Monday.
My Review of Alita
Another Piece I Wrote About Alita
ISN’T IT ROMANTIC (New Line/WB)
Directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson (The Final Girls, A VeryHarold and Kumar 3D Christmas) Written by Erin Cardillo, Dana Fox, Katie Silberman Cast: Rebel Wilson, Liam Hemsworth, Adam Devine, Jennifer Saunders, Priyanka Chopra, Betty Gilpin, Jennifer Saunders MPAA Rating: PG-13
Last but not least, especially with this week’s Valentine’s Hallmark Holiday on Thursday, is this unconventional romantic comedy that acts almost as a satire of the medium without going into Date Movie territory. It’s another chance for the very funny Rebel Wilson and Adam Devine, both from the Pitch Perfect movies, to break out on their own after mainly playing supporting roles in other comedies. Devine at least has a fanbase from his Comedy Central show Workaholics, and he’s had more featured roles in movies like Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, but this movie has more of an opportunity to reach young lovers and the date night crowd than the other two movies. I probably won’t review this, but I generally liked it quite a bit. I thought it was quite clever and funny in a snarky way that the kids seem to like and really its only straight competition is last week’s What Men Want.
LIMITED RELEASES
Tumblr media
Not a ton of limited releases this weekend thankfully, but one of the big ones is the New York and L.A. release of Stephen Merchant’s FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY (MGM), a comedic biopic about WWE Superstar Paige, as played by Florence Pugh (Lady MacBeth) and also starring Jack Lowden, Nick Frost, Lena Headey, Vince Vaughn and Dwayne Johnson, who also produced the film along with WWE Films.  It follows the story of how Paige and her brother Zak (Lowden) have dreams of becoming WWE superstars, coming from a family of wrestlers, and Paige’s struggles to fit in at the NXT training camp with Vaughn playing her tough coach. Johnson produced the film along with WWE Films, and he makes a couple brief apperances as himself. It’s a fun movie that I really enjoyed. You can read my full review below, and then look for my interview with Paige over at VitalThrills.com.
https://weekendwarriorblog.tumblr.com/post/182726024603/fighting-with-my-family-eds-very-important
Another pleasant surprise for the weekend is RUBEN BRANDT, COLLECTOR (Sony Pictures Classics), Slovenian filmmaker Milorad Krstic’s amazing animated feature centered around the title character, Ruben Brandt, a psychotherapist who has been having nightmares involving 13 famous paintings, so he puts together a band of art thieves (actual pieces of art who are also criminals) to steal some of the greatest artworks in the world. He quickly earns a reputation as “The Collector,” and a group of insurance companies hire private detective Mike Kowalski to get the art back.  I didn’t really know what to expect when I saw this movie a few weeks back, and the premise and characters are so bizarre, that it took me some time to adjust to the pace, but there’s some really cool stuff on display here including a number of action setpieces right out of Mission: Impossible or The Fast and the Furious, but all animated with a unique style that reminded me about what I loved about Terry Gilliam’s animation on Monty Python’s Flying Circus. If you’re a fan of animation and/or looking for something different this weekend, this is what I recommend.
Opening in New York Friday at the Quad Cinema and on VOD is Tim Sutton’s DONNYBROOK  (IFC Films), based on the novel by Frank Bill, in which Jamie Bell plays Jarhead Earl, who wants to keep his family together, so he robs a gun shop and goes on the road with his son to enter a legendary bare-knuckle brawl called Donnybrook, in which the winner gets $100,000. On his trail is drugdealer Chainsaw Angus, played by Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), and Angus’ sister (Margaret Qualley).  (FYI, Sutton will be at select screenings at the Quad.)
Opening on Weds at New York’s Film Forum and at several L.A. theaters on Friday is BIRDS OF PASSAGE  (The Orchard), Colombia’s Oscar entry directed by Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra (Embrace of the Serpent). It’s an amazing story set in the rural Colombian drug trade over the course of several decades. The winner of three Colombian Fenix Film Awards, Birds of Passageopened the Directors’ Fortnight at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and has played a number of major festivals since then. It’s a really strong film that showcases the indigenous Wayuu tribe based in the rural area of Colombia who get involved with the drug trade as a way to survive financially. It focuses primarily on the growing feud between two families and the plight of a young man named Rapayet to get out of the drug trade once he’s pulled into it in order to afford the dowry for his beautiful bride.  It’s another great-looking film but one that feels a little more contemporary than Guerra’s previous film even though it takes place between the ‘60s and ‘80s and could actually be viewed as a companion film to Tom Cruise’s American Madein the sense that it shows the very beginnings of the drug journey to the States.
Opening Friday at Lincoln Center is Hong Sang-soo’s Hotel by the River  (Cinema Guild), which played at the New York Film Festival last year. It involves two intersecting tales, one about an old poet who calls his estranged sons to be by his side as he reaches the end, and the other about a young woman with a broken heart.
Ryan Reynolds narrates the IMAX documentary Great Bear Rainforest: Land of the Spirit Bear, which opens solely in IMAX screens on Friday. It’s a movie about the Great Bear Rainforest in Canada where resides the rare all-white spirit bear, and the indigenous First Nations tribe.
Dog lovers who didn’t get enough canine cuteness with A Dog’s Way Home can also catch the dog movie Patrick (Screen Media), written and directed by Mandy Fletcher (Absolutely Fabulous), which will open in select cities and VOD Friday. It revolves around a young woman named Sarah Francis (Beattie Edmonson) whose life is a mess even before her grandmother (played by her real-life mother Jennifer Saunders, who is also in Isn’t It Romantic) bequeathes her spoiled pug Patrick to her. It also stars Ed Skrein (also in Alita), Gemma Jones and Emily Atack.
STREAMING
The only new movie streaming on Netflix this Friday is the New Zealand comedy The Breaker Upperers, written and directed by Madeleine Sami and Jackie van Beek, who also star as BFFs Jen and Mel who get paid for ending romances, although their own relationship is put to the test when one of gets a conscience about what they’re doing.
As far as series, Netflix is debuting the new series The Umbrella Academy, based on the comic series by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way and artist Gabriel Ba, this Friday. Meanwhile, on DC Universe’s streaming platform, the new Doom Patrol will premiere, and that’s a pretty crazy bit of counter-programming.
Not exactly “streaming” but Tina Brown and Dyana Winkler’s doc United Skates will premiere on HBO on Monday the 18th. I saw this at the Tribeca Film Festival last year where it won the Audience Award for documentary, and it’s won many other festival audience awards. It looks at the vanishing world of roller rinks and the “adult nights” that brought many of the African-American communities together in cities in North Carolina and California, but one that’s quickly fading away.
REPERTORY
