The Vice family followed a strict patriarchy for generation upon generation, marrying off daughters to eligible bachelors as soon as they were grown, and Avarice was no exception, leaving her brother Wrath as the sole male heir to the Vice family fortune. Although the nature of his trust fund does not allow him to share his family's money with his sister, he has made plans to divide his assets equally among his children, breaking his family’s long-standing patriarchal tradition.

Avarice was barely eighteen when she married Maksim Korolyov, and although she dutifully stood by her husband's side, concocting numerous plots and conducting a number of business deals that only served to grow their family's fortune, she was determined to make a name for herself in her own right. With her older brother's guidance, Avarice devised a plan to murder her husband, and as there was no heir to the Korolyov fortune, she took control of the family's assets, including a sizeable money laundering empire, which continued to flourish under her guidance.

Adi: Shut up! All I’ve ever done is listen to you, and it’s gotten me nowhere! It’s lost me everything! You pushed away my sister, and my parents; you lost me my son, and Jacob; you--

Ava: I helped you! You were nothing compared to Sonata. She outshone you in every way, and everyone knew it -- she knew it, your good-for-nothing father knew it, that boyfriend of yours knew it -- you think he ever really loved you? Please, you were just a poor substitute for your sister. I gave you something to distinguish yourself and set you apart. I made you special. I taught you everything! Everything you are, everything you’ve become, you owe to me!

Ava: Listen to yourself! You’re still harping over some boy, like you’re still thirteen years old! You’re pathetic, Adriel.

Adi: I should just kill you now--

Ava: Please, you couldn’t kill a worthless snitch. You really think you can kill your own grandmother?

No sooner had she exited the building than Avarice discovered that Adriel had not been bluffing; with her forearms covered in her granddaughter’s blood, the Korolyov matriarch had little choice but to allow herself to be unceremoniously handcuffed and shoved into the back of a squad car, hauled off to a prison cell to await a trial.

An officer approached Miles and attempted to thank him for his assistance in the whole affair, but Miles brushed off the compliment – “Where’s the girl? Where’s Adi?”

The scene was still under investigation, the officer told him. Avarice had walked straight out of the front doors and into custody; there hadn’t been a girl with her when she’d emerged. Evidence was still being collected, no one was permitted to enter the building until the outdoor perimeter had been secured.

Miles had seen the blood on Avarice’s hands and immediately turned and entered the building, ignoring the officer shouting after him to stop.

“Oh, Adriel... Everything is going to be just fine, dear...”

Adi: You – you know about Miles?

Ava: Of course I know, stupid girl. Haven’t you learned yet? You can’t hide anything from me. You’re foolish and predictable. You’re pitiful, sniveling around after that boy for so long – you hero-worshipped him almost as much as he worshipped your sister – and even now that he’s dead, you still can’t let him go. You were naive to think your little romance would last, and you’re naive to think you’re capable of outwitting me. You’re pathetic, and you’re weak.

Ava: Well, are you going to shoot me, Adriel? Or do I get a few last words?

Adi: The Willow Creek police have this place surrounded. You can walk out and let them take you into custody, or I shoot you now. Your choice.

Ava: You’re bluffing. I have sources inside the Willow Creek Police Department that would ensure they never--

Adi: You of all people should know that money talks. You aren’t the only one with cash, you know. Your “sources” belong to me now.

Ava: Well. Aren’t you the resourceful one? Given the option, I suppose I’ll go quietly, but -- if I may have a word with you first? Before you turn me over to your new friends?

[pollination-tech]

Ava: Where did I go so wrong, that it’s come to this? My own granddaughter, having me arrested, threatening to shoot me… and here I’d thought this little rebellion of yours would end after that nasty business with that officer–

Adi: Don’t you dare say another word about him. You don’t get to talk about him, not after what you did.

[pollination-tech]

Adi: You... you’re right... I am weak... I’m not -- I’m not strong enough... Without you, I can’t... [sobbing]

Ava: Please, I did you a favor. Did you honestly think he--

Adi: I said don’t say another word about him!

Ava: Adriel--!

Adi: Fine. Say what you want.

Ava: I must admit I’m surprised at you. Such hostility, and toward your own grandmother--

Adi: Save it. After everything you’ve done, you’re lucky I’m giving you the option to walk out of here alive. Say your piece and be done with it.
