Miss Meadows. The first film I'm posting about after literal years. I wanted to get back into doing this for the fun. The original goal may not have been met, but I like this method of watching movies. It helps me focus on what's happening... That said, this movie started interesting and fun and slooowly went downhill. Her entire relationship with the Sheriff? Awkward. So painfully awkward. The writing was not great. Not taking points off for the writing was extremely generous of me. But I had fun watching it, to be fair... that said... ESE: -10/100

Hello anon! Thank you so much for your well-wishes in the AVA voting, and for this lovely question!

If you mean "visually" (as much as we can have visuals in an audio medium), none of them quite look like Watson (though Archie has the moustache for it now).

As far as matching the more classic "Watson" archetype vibe-wise (which I think you meant)--since so much of the show ends up being about [spoiler for those who haven't finished] trying to fit yourself into roles and archetypes that don't actually fit you just because you've seen other people find success there, we wanted to have a few different characters have elements of John Watson, but we didn't want anyone to be an easy 1-1 type stand-in, if that makes sense.

We wanted James to be in many ways what Hampton thinks Watson should be, objectively--a man he has a close friendship bond with, someone more classically handsome and socially aware than him, physically capable, settled in with a partner (or, as Madge calls him in 1x08, "dashing, athletic, in an absolute sham of a marriage").

We wanted Madge to someone who is probably closer to an actual Watson for him on the relationship end of the spectrum, but who Hampton has discounted because of superficial differences--someone he's known for longer, someone who meets him with enthusiasm on games of deduction and disguise, someone who he loves deeply and who understands him deeply, someone who values his idiosyncrasies even while poking fun at them.

And we designed Archie in a way to be James's version of Watson, a partner for him in every way, supportive but firm, challenging yet domestic. They're all iterations on different versions of who Hampton (and the audience) thinks "a Watson" is and who he could be, and what that person could be in his relationships. They're all different iterations of the possibilities for the character, in a way.

Also, to tease a bit of season 2, none of these are necessarily the "real" John Watson (in our world), or the "real" relationship between Holmes and Watson, just what he could be to outsiders who have never actually bothered to spend time with the actual guy. And the same way that Hampton has to come to terms with the fact that he won't be a 1-1 Sherlock Holmes, he has to come to terms with the fact that his partners won't be 1-1 iterations, nor will his relationships, and they perhaps need to come up with their own definitions of what they are. It's part of the next stage of the journey.

As far as none of them being a biographer, though, that's a question for season 2.

Rain pattered against the windows of 221B, the wind rattling the panes. Sherlock, of course, was slumped against the couch, his usual drama queen self. Too dreary for cases today. He told himself, he was hardly in the mood for anyone’s business.

Well, except John’s. And said man lurked in the kitchen, brewing tea.

“Hey, Sherlock?” He piped up.

“Yes, John?” Came the inquisitive reply.

The next 4 rounds will only last a single day, so don't delay if you wish to participate; the next round (Round 3) will be starting today (May 08) at 10:00 AM PDT (Pacific Daylight Time).

The next match will be Suletta/Miorine vs. Ava/Beatrice from the show Warrior Nun. While I am personally biased in favor of the protagonists of G-Witch, Ava/Beatrice nonetheless deserve a hearty congratulations for defeating Holmes/Watson of BBC Sherlock fame (i.e. the 'lock' portion of Superwholock). It should also be noted that Warrior Nun (much like a distressing number of other shows with sapphic leads) was done dirty by executive interference, so I would encourage participants to be civil, as you likely have more in common than not (assuming you are not already a fan of both and will be making a painful decision soon).

Gundam fans in general, I am sorry to inform you that there are no other Gundam couples in these polls, so vote accordingly.

Magic

Even Sherlock Holmes wasn't expecting this.

“How did she die?” Lestrade asks. 

Sherlock glances at Anderson, certain he has some theory he’s eager to blurt out as soon as Lestrade gives him permission to talk. It’ll be rubbish, but Sherlock hasn’t any answer, either. 

The woman, Jennifer Wilson, is wearing all pink. She came from Wales today and had been planning to meet a lover. Serial adulterer, her ring says. 

Anderson has already given his opinion about the letters she scratched into the floor: RACHE—

But she isn’t German and it isn’t clear why she would scratch the word for revenge into the floorboards, breaking her pink nails and bloodying the tips of her fingers. And even if Anderson were right about it (he’s not), it doesn’t explain what killed her.

He nods at Anderson. The tech shrugs. “No idea,” he says. He smirks a bit. “Go on, do your magic, Holmes.”

There is nothing magic about observing, he wants to say. But that’s beside the point. He’s observed everything— this crime scene and the three before— and none of the victims should be dead. No wounds, no asphyxia, no medical conditions, no poison. Four victims, dead for no observable reason. 

He loves seeing what others miss, putting the pieces together and presenting the solution as if it were obvious. That’s what he does, why Lestrade calls him whenever the police are out of their depth. This ought to be a fascinating mystery, but with important clues missing, it’s baffling. 

At this point, he might hare off suddenly, pretending he’s thought of something, but that won’t bring him any closer to the solution. 

“It’s not suicide,” he says. 

“Obviously,” a voice replies. 

In the doorway stands an odd-looking man, smiling at them. Sandy-blond hair, face tanned, military posture. His coat is long, a rather shabby velvet thing that may once have been black, but now has a purplish sheen. Epaulettes on each shoulder give it the look of a uniform. Under it, Sherlock can see the collar of a checked shirt peeking out of a beige jumper. Khaki trousers complete the look, whatever it’s meant to be. 

“Obviously?” Sherlock says, because nothing is obvious right now. 

“Who’re you?” Lestrade asks. “Didn’t you see the yellow tape? Didn’t Sergeant Donovan—“

“She didn’t see me,” the man replies. “I Apparated.”

“You… what?” Lestrade looks no less confused than Sherlock feels. 

Still studying the man, he asks, “Afghanistan or Iraq?”

“Neither,” the man says. “And you won’t find a cause of death, not one that you’ll recognise, because you can’t see the magical signature. I can. I’m afraid it was Ava Kedavra, one of the Unforgivable curses, which is why I’m here.” He holds out his hand to Lestrade. “John Watson, Auror.” 

Lestrade takes the hand, stares at Watson with his mouth open. “You’re… what?”

“An Auror. Would you mind stepping over here, Mr Holmes, Mr Anderson?” He gestures that they should stand with Lestrade. “This will only take a moment.”

Curious, Sherlock steps towards Lestrade. “Who killed her?”

“Moriarty. I’m afraid that you’re about to forget that, though.”

“Moriarty killed her… with a curse.” Sherlock shakes his head. “What are you—“

Auror Watson is holding something that might be a wand. “Look at me, gentlemen.” As they all lean in to see what he’s about to show them, he speaks one word.

“Obliviate.”
