I'm once again reminded of its much smaller cousin, the haywire.
You've heard of the term, "Going haywire," right? Ever spared a thought to why that term exists?
See, time was there was a prototype automatic hay-baler. But this was in that magic period juuust before we really got into standardized sizes. So calibration of the machine was handled manually - a mix of guessing and learning from the results of guessing. If you've read Raising Steam by Sir Terry Pratchett you know that many people don't get to learn from the results of their own guesses, due to being dead.
A poorly calibrated hay-baler had the mechanical strength to smush the hay into a tight bundle, wrap the wire around it, and tie that wire off to maintain the bale's form. But the pressure of the over-packed hay was a constant outward force. Each bale made by an over-tight baler was potential energy in physical form. We have a word for "potential energy in physical form" and that word is "bomb."
So sometimes, a man would toss a hay bale and it would land with a twang and the man who'd been reaching down to pick it up where it landed was dead.
And that is what "haywire" means.

William Chester Ruth (July 19, 1882 – April 3, 1971) was an inventor, business owner, and community leader in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Samuel and Maria Louisa Pinn-Ruth. The 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment liberated Samuel, when it occupied Savannah, Georgia while Maria Louisa was born free in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He was one of twelve children, born on the family farm.
He had an inquisitive nature, which led him to invent numerous pieces of farm equipment and machinery. He learned farming and blacksmithing from his father. He married Gertrude Miller (1906) and they had one son. The couple moved to Gap, Pennsylvania where he opened Ruth’s Ironworks Shop, becoming the only African American in the region to have his manufacturing business. He designed and patented numerous agricultural devices (1924-50).
His first patented invention was the Combination Baler Feeder (1924). He sold over 5,000 Baler-Feeder machines across the US. He invented the farm elevator used to transport hay to silos and in the harvested mushroom industry.
He invented an 87-part automatic tie for a hay baler. Patent attorneys labeled its working mechanism a “complicated mess” and it took two years before the patent office recognized his invention. He sold over 5,000 of the automatic ties to Great Plains farmers in the US and Canada. The Mechanical Cinder Spreader was used to spread cinders over icy roads. He sold 150 of the Mechanical Cinder Spreaders to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
His fame spread and at the beginning of WWII, he was commissioned by the government to design and manufacture secret wartime devices for airplanes and bombsights. Some of his inventions were used in the design of the Trident Missile. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
