A Step-by-Step Guide on Refilling Windshield Washer Fluid at Home Performance
Maintaining a clean and clear windshield is essential for safe driving, as it ensures optimum visibility on the road. However, the environment often throws various elements at our windshields, such as grime, bugs, and bird droppings, which can hinder our view. To combat this, modern cars are equipped with windshield wiper fluid reservoirs and spray systems that make cleaning a breeze. When the fluid level runs low, it's time to refill the reservoir to ensure uninterrupted use. In this comprehensive guide, we will walk you through the easy steps to refill your windshield washer fluid at home. You don't need any special tools for this task; just a trip to the store and a few minutes of your time. Let's get started!
1: Locating the Windshield Washer Fluid Reservoir:
The windshield washer fluid reservoir is typically found in the engine bay of your vehicle. Look for a reservoir with a blue cap featuring the windshield wiper symbol. While the exact location may vary depending on your car's make, model, and manufacturing year, you can consult your owner's manual for assistance. It is crucial to identify the correct reservoir to avoid accidentally tampering with other fluid compartments.
2: Opening the Reservoir Cap and Adding Distilled Water:
Once you have located the reservoir, carefully open the cap, ensuring it is undamaged. To refill the fluid, you will need distilled water, which is recommended to prevent mineral deposits and maintain the longevity of your washer system. Using a funnel, pour the distilled water into the reservoir slowly and cautiously. Be mindful not to overfill the reservoir, as it can lead to leakage and potentially damage other components. During the refilling process, it is vital to prevent any debris or dirt from entering the reservoir. Even tiny particles can clog the fluid lines, hindering the spray action on your windshield. Take extra care to keep the area clean and free from any potential contaminants.
3: Checking the Fluid Sprayer:
After successfully refilling the reservoir, start your vehicle and test the fluid sprayer. Engage the wiper system and verify if the sprayer is functioning correctly. Ensure that the fluid is adequately sprayed onto the windshield in a consistent manner. Check for any abnormalities, such as insufficient spray or irregular spray patterns, which might indicate underlying issues. If the fluid sprayer is working correctly and the windshield is being effectively cleaned, congratulations! You have successfully refilled your windshield washer fluid, and your car is ready for the road.
Conclusion:
Maintaining a clear and clean windshield is vital for road safety, and refilling the windshield washer fluid is a simple yet important task. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can easily refill the fluid reservoir at home without the need for professional assistance or specialized tools. Remember, regularly checking and topping up your windshield washer fluid ensures that you have a reliable and efficient cleaning system when you need it most. Additionally, using distilled water helps prevent clogging and prolongs the lifespan of your washer system. So, take a proactive approach to your vehicle maintenance, and with just a few minutes of effort, enjoy the benefits of a clear and unobstructed view on your daily drives. Stay safe on the road and enjoy the journey!

Tumblr media
“Ooh, Mami, this a new 'Rari. Hit 150 on the dash, I bent the corner, then she bent it for me sideways, uh I might have to fuck her on the highway, yeah”
You just stepped out of your white and red 1992 Mitsubishi Galant VR 4 hugging your friend Zoe park after she ask you to drive in her place in a local street race. There you see three other cars. A yellow and black 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T and fuzzy dice hanging in the rear view mirror with a guy with blonde hair and sunglasses chilling outside chatting with others.
A green 1993 Toyota Supra Turbo with an older guy with a shaved head and wearing a tank top chilling outside while listening to music with his friends.
Then you see a car that caught your attention. It was a black 1999 Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 with a custom painted oni design on the side. You can see the owner on the side smoking a cigarette and just waved to you. Your intrigued.
But your car was amazing too. It was gifted to you by your father. It was white and red 1992 Mitsubishi Galant VR 4 with a custom paint with hello kitty in the side.
As you enter the race the other racers were snickering and making fun of your car. Saying how it looks girly and too old. However the owner of the nissan just glanced at your car before turning back to focus on the race.
You held onto your wheel as you see the flag girl raise her bandana? Or cloth and just waved it before stepping aside for you guys to race. Then you hear a speakerphone of someone you knew. Daniel park, signaling and counting down. 3, 2, 1, and go! You all step on the pedal
Your racing and your in 3rd place before you see the bridge pull up. The green car owner stopped before you see a flash of yellow also slow down. Now it’s between your Mitsubishi and the owner of the Nissan to finish this race.
Both of you speeding up you drove off the bridge and managed to land on the other side safely.
You both returned back safely and exited the car.
There you get out and a crowd comes rushing to the both of you. Including Zoe and Daniel. They just come up to you and congratulate you. Before you see the Nissan owner also coming up to shake your hand.
“That was impressive, no one has beaten me in a race before. I’m Gun. Gun park” he just greets you with a prideful smirk.
You just smile back and shaked his car before seeing the other racers come up. The green haired guy, or Taejin just comes out pissed and throws his steering wheel out on the ground while another man with tan skinned with glasses comes up to comfort Jin. While Zoe just holds onto you and Daniel looks at Gun with caution. You noticed that the two of them had tension.
“GOD DAMMIT” you see the Blonde glasses man come up with his car totaled and goes up to Gun and grabs his collar.
They were just arguing until you came up to the both of them. “Maybe I can fix your car? I own a auto shop near the city.” Goo just comes up and holds your hand into his and smiles while tears come out of his eyes and agreed. You all bid farewells and drove home. The next day you open your shop and see them both outside with their cars. You welcome them both in offering them drinks while you fix their cars.
Goo just took a coffee while Gun took a beer and you took in Goos car to fix.
Gun couldn’t stop staring at your ass. How it fitted the suit that was covered in dirt and oil. Or how your tank top perfectly outflanked your tits. And how you had that cute hat on your head.
Goo just stared at you with admiration while you fixed his car.
It took a while but you managed to repair the man’s car and took them to the register to tell them the price.
“Good thing most of the car was alright. But for the Windshield crack repair, window replacement, windshield replacement, bumper repair and replacement, scratch repair, frame damage repair, and engine replacement it’ll cost you around 3.4K. How does that sound?” You said ringing up the prices
Goo just nudges to Gun and he groans taking out his card and swiping it. You give the receipt and take out the vehicle out of your shop.
You wave goodbye as you see them leave. Closing up the shop you see a letter left on the counter. Curiosily you went to go pick it up and read it. You see tears swell up with happiness as you see the same love letter you wrote to a good friend of yours after he had left to Japan.

day three - car accident
notes: hi friends and welcome back for febwhump day three! What better way to ring in day three than by having Squad 3 in a bit of a pickle? This is part one and part two will be posted tomorrow!
read on AO3 or below
It was a stormy morning in Chicago, the clouds looming in the sky above still frighteningly dark, as if the constant rain and thunderstorms that had plagued the city for the past 24 hours had done nothing to ease their burden.
The men and women of Firehouse 51 were exhausted, having responded to countless car accidents and swift water rescues for those particularly brave (or foolish) drivers who chose not to heed the ‘turn around, don’t drown’ warnings. They were just a few hours shy of finishing their shift and they hoped the lull in the rain would last long enough for them to ride out the rest of their shift at the station and get home safely.
That hope was shattered, however, as the bells tolled and Squad 3 was called out to yet another water rescue.
It was an easy rescue given the weather and within an hour, Squad 3 was headed back to 51.
The rain had picked up again and between the downpour and the dark of early morning, visibility was low. The few cars that were out on the streets were driving with extreme care and caution. Even Tony, the experienced engineer he was, had difficulty navigating the city streets.
As they approached an intersection and made their way through, no one saw the delivery truck driving far too fast on the slick road.
No one saw it blow through the stop sign.
No one saw it coming until it was too late.
The crash was catastrophic. By the time both trucks saw each other, there was nothing either of them could do. The delivery truck plowed into the front passenger side, sending both trucks careening in the intersection.
The sounds of squealing tires, the sickening crunch of metal, and shattering glass filled the early morning air; a cacophony of harsh, devastating noise. It seemed to drag on for a lifetime, but it was barely more than a minute before all the noise stopped. As quickly as the accident began, it ended with both trucks smoking, Squad 3’s truck on its side, and all occupants unconscious.
… … …
“Truck 81, Engine 51, Ambo 61, Squad 6, Ambo 57, DC 4, auto accident at 16th and Whacker.”
The station erupted to life, each person running out to their respective rigs to get to the scene quickly.
“An entire station plus some for a car accident?” Carver asked from the back of Truck. “Do we know anything else?”
Stella grabbed her radio. “Chief, do we know any details on this accident?”
“Dispatch is still fielding calls from the scene. They’ll relay more information to us once they have it.”
It didn’t take long for them to arrive at the scene but just before they rounded the corner dispatch came across the radio with an update.
“51 be advised, Squad 3 was involved in the accident.”
A shocked silence filled the trucks. When Squad 3 was not included in dispatch’s call out, they’d all assumed they were still at their earlier rescue. None of them expected them to be the ones in need of rescue.
No one said anything, all their thoughts were on their teammates and friends. They hoped, by some miracle, it was a minor accident with minor injuries but given how many trucks had been called to the scene they suspected that wasn’t the case.
“Oh my god,” Stella said quietly, fear creeping into her every being.
Mouch had just turned the corner and Truck 81 had just gotten their first glimpse of the accident. It looked like a bomb had gone off. Pieces of warped, crushed metal littered the street along with glass from broken windows and windshields and fresh skid marks painted the road. A delivery truck with a crushed front end was smoking but the most alarming sight to them was the familiar Squad truck turned over on its side.
Before Mouch even parked the truck, Stella was hopping out and rushing towards the involved trucks. She was desperate to get to Kelly and the others. She wasn’t alone in that desperation as the rest of 51 joined her almost immediately.
Squad 6 and Ambo 57 had not yet arrived on the scene, so Herrmann and the Engine crew took off towards the delivery truck. They’d handle the smoke and check out the driver while Truck assessed Squad’s situation.
Stella ran around to the front of the truck and knelt to look through the shattered windshield. It was hard to make anything out through the spiderweb of cracks but she could see movement on the driver’s side. “Capp! Tony! You guys okay?”
“We’re good!” Tony called out. “Some cuts from the glass but nothing major.”
“Capp, what about you?”
“I hit my head when we flipped but other than that and some cuts I’m good!” Capp answered, his voice strong.
“Glad to hear it,” Stella responded, genuinely. “What about Cruz and Severide? How do they look?”
“I’m okay Lieutenant!” Cruz’s voice was laced with pain, but he sounded coherent. “I think my shoulder’s busted.”
“Anything else hurt or feel off?” Stella asked as Brett knelt beside her.
“Maybe a concussion and some bruised ribs.”
“What about Severide? How’s he looking?” The anxiety in Stella’s voice was unmistakable.
“He’s been out the whole time,” Tony started. “The impact was on his side so he got the worst of it. I can see some blood and it looks like he’s stuck.”
“Stuck how?” Stella asked, waving over the Lieutenant from Squad 6 who’d just arrived on the scene.
“The frame of the truck looks like it wrapped around him.”
Stella relayed the information and updates to Lieutenant Hanson, who sent his men to get the tools they’d need. He bent down next to Stella and Brett. “Hang tight guys, we’ll get you out of there soon.”
When the rest of Squad 6 returned, Stella and Brett were forced to move back to give them room. Stella walked over to Boden who had stationed himself between the two trucks.
“How are they?” Boden questioned.
“Capp and Tony seem okay with some minor injuries. Cruz is a bit more banged up—possible broken shoulder, concussion, and bruised ribs.”
“And Severide?”
“Unconscious. Tony said he’s been unresponsive the entire time.” Stella took a shuddering breath. “He thinks he’s stuck in there, trapped under the crushed metal.”
Boden hummed, unable to put his thoughts into words at the moment. He’d spoken with the officers on scene and heard some of the statements from a few witnesses. While Stella’s update had provided some relief from his worry, his anger at the situation was overpowering every other emotion. This accident shouldn’t have happened.
“How’s the other driver?”
“Drunk,” Boden groused. He saw Stella’s eyes widen. “Witnesses say he blew through the stop sign. The paramedics on 57 checked him out and he’s getting a police escort to Med.”
“Unbelievable.” Stella was beyond angry. Her friends and teammates, and her husband, could’ve died because some idiot decided to drink and drive. Her husband could be seriously injured and the other driver walked away scott-free.
The whirring of equipment and the sound of metal being cut and pried apart pulled Stella out of her thoughts and brought her back to the scene. She and Boden moved closer to where the team was gathered and to where Squad 6 had just opened the roof of Squad 3’s cab.
It took some careful maneuvering but after a few minutes, Capp and Tony were both out and being examined by Brett and Violet. They were cleared of any serious injuries, not even a concussion for Capp, but Boden still radioed dispatch for additional ambulances. Every member of Squad was taking a trip to Med to get checked out.
Getting Cruz out took a bit longer than Capp and Tony due to how smashed his side of the truck was. They also had to be extra careful to not jostle Severide’s seat. By the time Cruz had gotten out, two more ambulances had arrived on the scene. The paramedics from Ambo 21 immediately began treating Cruz while the paramedics from Ambo 37 took over helping Capp and Tony.
Boden insisted they all head to the hospital and even ordered the paramedics to take them as soon as possible, but Cruz, Capp, and Tony all refused. They wanted to stay until Severide had been freed. “He wouldn’t leave until we were all out so we’re not leaving until he’s out.”
Cruz’s words rang true and Boden found it hard to argue.
… … …
Extracting Severide was an agonizingly slow process. The impact of the crash had folded and crushed the metal around him, creating a cocoon that had to be carefully cut and peeled away. Brett had climbed in and put a C-collar on Severide, taking full spinal precaution since he hadn’t woken up yet. The blood covering nearly half of his face, however, confirmed he was injured so they were working on the assumption he was far more injured than they could see.
It took 30 minutes to get enough of the metal away so they could move Severide safely. Getting him out of what remained of the truck’s cab and onto a backboard called for great caution. It wasn’t until Severide was fully strapped and secured to the backboard and on his way out of the truck that he started to come to.
First, it was fluttering eyelids, then a quiet groan, then moving fingers which is what got everyone’s attention.
“Hey, I think he’s coming too!” Benson, one of Squad 6’s guys called out as the backboard cleared the wreckage.
They gently set the backboard on the gurney Brett and Violet brought over. The paramedics immediately began assessing him. He never fully regained consciousness, but his pulse was strong given the circumstances and he was responding to stimuli. That’s as good as things got, unfortunately.
“Decreased breath sounds on the right,” Violet announced, removing the stethoscope from her ears.
Brett turned her pen light off and stuck it back in her pocket. “Right pupil is blown. Let’s get him to Med.”
Brett’s declaration set everyone else in action. Capp and Tony climbed into Ambo 37 under their own power and Cruz was loaded into Ambo 21. Brett and Violet loaded Severide into the back of 61 and allowed Stella to climb in beside him before closing the doors.
Brett sped away from the scene, leading the convoy of ambulances towards Med.
… … …
As Violet started cutting away Severide’s shirt and jacket to start an IV and hook him up to the monitors, Stella stayed silent. She just sat on the bench on his other side and held his hand. Her fingers played absentmindedly with the black silicone ring on his finger while she stared at his face.
“You think he’s going to be okay?” she asked Violet.
Violet shot her friend a sympathetic smile. “I think he’s a little worse off than Cruz but he’s strong and he’ll pull through.”
Stella nodded and was quiet for a moment. Then, all at once, it was as if everything she’d been bottling up since her talk with Boden erupted. “The other driver? He was drunk…almost three times the legal limit. He blew through the stop sign and the roads were too slick for him to stop in time. He walked away with nothing but a few bumps and bruises! He hurt so many people! Cruz and Kelly are going to be out of work for weeks if not longer all because some idiot wanted to get wasted and get behind the wheel of a truck!”
Violet reached an arm over Severide and placed it on Stella’s arm. “That jackass is going to get what he deserves and Cruz and Severide are going to be fine. You gotta believe that. Focus on that.”
Stella nodded and went back to playing with Kelly’s wedding band.
“Before you know it, all four of the Squad guys will be back at 51 bragging about the shiny new truck they’re gonna have.” Violet added after a minute, trying to get a smile out of her friend.
It worked and Stella chuckled, some of the tension melting off of her shoulders.
Violet was right; Kelly would be fine.
He had to be.

Windshield Chip Repair: Tips and Advice
Tumblr media
A small chip or crack in your windshield might seem like a minor issue, but ignoring it can lead to bigger problems. As the windshield flexes and encounters temperature changes, that tiny chip can quickly turn into an unsightly crack, obstructing your view and compromising the structural integrity of the glass. The good news is that with the right approach, many windshield chips and small cracks can be effectively repaired, saving you the hassle and expense of a full windshield replacement.
In this blog post, we'll share some valuable tips and advice to help you tackle those pesky windshield chips successfully.
Tip #1: Act Quickly
Time is of the essence when it comes to windshield chip repair. The sooner you address the issue, the better your chances of a successful fix. Aim to repair the chip within 2-3 days to prevent further spreading.
Tip #2: Invest in a Quality Repair Kit
While DIY methods are floating around the internet, your best bet is to purchase a windshield repair kit specifically designed for this purpose. These kits contain a specialized resin that can bond and seal the glass, along with the necessary tools for proper application.
Tip #3: Prepare the Surface
Proper preparation is key to a successful repair. Thoroughly clean the area around the chip or crack, removing any dirt, debris, or moisture that could interfere with the bonding process.
Tip #4: Follow the Instructions to the Letter
Each windshield repair kit comes with detailed instructions. Read them carefully and follow every step precisely. Skipping steps or rushing through the process can compromise the repair's effectiveness.
Tip #5: Apply Consistent Pressure
Most repair kits include a tool or pedestal that applies pressure to the chip while the resin cures. Consistent pressure is crucial for the resin to bond properly with the glass.
Tip #6: Allow Ample Curing Time
Patience is a virtue when it comes to windshield chip repair. The resin needs time to fully cure and bond with the glass, typically 6-12 hours. Resist the temptation to rush the process, as this can lead to a subpar repair.
Tip #7: Know When to Seek Professional Help
While many chips and small cracks can be repaired at home, there are instances when it's best to leave it to the professionals. If the damage is larger than a quarter or a dollar bill, or if it extends to the edge of the windshield, it's advisable to have it professionally repaired or replaced.
Tip #8: Consider Safety First
If the chip or crack falls within the driver's critical viewing area, even a successful repair may not be sufficient. In such cases, replacing the entire windshield for optimal safety is generally recommended.
By following these tips and taking the time to repair windshield chips properly, you can extend the life of your windshield, save money, and ensure a safe driving experience. Remember, a little preventative maintenance can go a long way in avoiding larger, more costly repairs down the line.

What Happened to the VW Bus? Is It Coming Back?
Tumblr media
Actually, nothing happened to the VW bus. It just became less popular, temporarily, in the United States. And yes, it is coming back in a big way!
After the 1970s, the U.S. shut down VW bus manufacturing since the popular van was no longer was able to meet new safety and emissions standards. Production continued in Brazil, however, until 2014, when Brazil enacted new standards that the current model of the bus couldn’t meet. When that happened, the German production factory shut down its production after 63 years – the longest running time of any vehicle ever.
Now, many people are excited to learn the Volkswagen Bus is coming back next year, in 2024 – as the ID. Buzz (yes, that is its name!). It’s electric, eclectic and brings back a hint of the hippie movement psychedelic nostalgia with its neon colors: tangerine, lime, grape and more. Volkswagen is hoping to once again earn the respect and admiration of a new generation of car buyers.
One reason the VW bus became obsolete was its failing safety measures. No matter what you choose to drive, being safely prepared for the road by purchasing affordable car insurance will ensure your favorite vehicle never goes out of style.
The Peculiar History of the VW Bus
Although many people in the U.S. think of the iconic Volkswagen bus as the original hippie van from the 1960s, it has a different association in Europe, where it was born in Germany in the 1940s. Colloquially called the VW Bus in America and the VW Camper in the UK, the Volkswagen bus was modeled after the German Plattenwagen, a vehicle originally made to carry car parts. Dutch businessman, race car driver, winemaker and Olympian Ben Pon, always looking for something new and already selling the hugely popular VW Beetle in the United States, saw the Plattenwagen during a tour of the Volkswagen plant in West Germany one day and the lightbulb went off.
The Beetle paved the way for what was known then as the VW Transporter, later called the Volkswagen Microbus and then, in later years, the Bus. In the 1950s when the Transporter hit the market, buyers could choose from 8 different models, all designed to answer a specific need. Today, there are more than 15 variations of the Transporter (or T models) on the market.
For example, the Kombi VW bus featured removable rear seats so consumers could use the van to carry cargo (and people). A variety of side windows options also made an appearance during these days, with a low-end version offering 11-15 windows spaced around the van and high-end versions offering 23-window VW buses. Early models carried a hard to clean split front windshield, earning it one of many nicknames, “the Splitty.” Volkswagen did away with this unpopular feature, creating a solid front windshield.
In Europe, families and friends used the popular bus for camping trips, as did Americans, who also plastered peace signs all over it and drove it to see Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead. Europeans turned it into an ambulance, and everyone used its large interior for deliveries and carting stuff around.
In the 1960s, things began to turn around in the U.S. market when people became more concerned with vehicle safety and emissions – and something known as the chicken tax.
Chicken Tax
The Chicken War started when American farmers adopted poultry factory farming practices in the 1950s. Soon, chicken was being exported to Europe in mind-boggling numbers – which didn’t sit well with German farmers. Feathers flew and, as a result, high tariffs were implemented on imported chicken in Europe.
In America, the United Auto Workers were threatening a strike over the importing of the popular Volkswagen Type 2 pickup truck.
In response to both of the above, President Johnson imposed a 25% tax on imported light trucks. Called the Chicken Tax, it’s still in effect today. The effect on the Volkswagen is, in order to avoid the Chicken Tax, the vehicle cannot be sold as a truck or any kind of commercial vehicle.

Today’s Volkswagen Bus
Today, three different iterations of the VW bus are on the production line at a plant in Hanover, Germany. The model year T6 continues to be built with a van platform but is ceasing production with the new ID. Buzz. This is its last year. The T7 is a medium-sized Transporter with a large cargo area marketed as a plug-in hybrid. And the newest member of this family of unconventional members is the Buzz, due in the U.S. in 2024.
In Europe, the electric Buzz rolled into the market in 2022 and found new categories to master, including as a police car, a school bus, a postal truck and much more. But in America, the Buzz will never climb to the exalted ranks of a service vehicle. The chicken tax took care of that. It will always be a passenger van on these shores.
The Buzz About the Buzz
Let’s talk specifics about this new van that’s supposed to bring us all back to the days of concerts, tie-dye and peace signs. Of course, it is electric. But what other changes will we see?
Appearance: Some people think the new Buzz looks similar to the old Scooby-Doo van. Others think it looks like what might happen if a modern minivan had a baby with a sleek sports car. It certainly no longer has the goofy smile of the old VW Bus. Some people say it looks like an angry cousin.
Mechanics: It’s no longer necessary to carry around the “How to Fix Your Volkswagen for the Complete Idiot” and 3 wrenches. The downside is that a paper clip and a rubber band won’t fix the rear engine until you can get it to a shop. And, gasp, it comes in automatic transmission, too. Staying on top of maintenance will get you further.
Noise and Driving: If you’ve ever driven or ridden in an older VW Microbus, you already know how noisy it was, with bone-jarring shakes and rattles. It may – or may not – make it up that steep hill in the mountains of Colorado. Perhaps try reverse to make it up? Today’s version will have up to 201 horsepower (the original had an HP of two digits). It’s supposed to be much easier to maneuver. You’ve got to wonder if they took out all the fun!
Smart Car: You probably won’t consider the new Buzz as you did its distant little brother or sister. In the 60s, the bus was considered a valuable and friendly member of the family. The Buzz is more like the rather stern computer Hal in “2001: A Space Odyssey” (except for the part where Hal goes crazy and murders the crew). That won’t happen with Buzz, but it may stop you from switching lanes without signaling or flashing colors at you if there’s an obstruction in the road.
Overall, VW is banking on the new trend for electrical vehicles to help it become the world player it once was with the Beetle and the original VW bus in decades past. And although it may cost quite a bit more than the original ($1,800 vs $40,000), there are still fans clamoring to get a piece of yesterday for today.

$65000 a year is not quite middle class.
It is by no means “rich”.
Most people making $65k a year are living paycheck to paycheck. They cannot afford to buy a house. They cannot afford childcare. Since most jobs that pay $65k a year require some form of secondary education, chances are they have pretty substantial student loan debt.
$65000 in 2024 is the equivalent of, funnily enough, about $17000 in 1980.
A person making $65k a year is likely taking home about $950 a week after taxes/insurance.
Average rent for a one bedroom apartment in the US is currently $1563 a month - let’s say this hypothetical person lives in a part of the country that is somewhere in the middle, between low cost of living and high cost of living, so let’s adjust that down a skosh to, say, $1450 a month.
$950 x 4 = $3800 per month - let’s say $4000 for easier math and to account for months with 5 paychecks, rather than four. That makes the average one bedroom apartment about 36% of your income.
Now let’s get some groceries - average grocery cost per person is $240 to $425 a month. Let’s make that $300, for easy math. We’re down to $2250, now, by the way.
Let’s go ahead and get some utilities for that apartment, shall we? Let’s estimate $150 for electric, $50 for basic internet, and $100 for a cell phone. Down to $1950.
Now we have to talk about transportation. Most of the US realistically requires a car, and most people buy cars on credit, so let’s say our hypothetical person has decent credit and bought an economical used car - let’s go with a five year old Toyota Corolla, with a little under 100k miles. According to auto trader, with decent credit and a $500 down payment, that 2018 Corolla will cost $371 a month - for easy math, let’s call that $350.
But cars require insurance - and since it’s financed, that means full coverage. Let’s assume our hypothetical person is a pretty safe driver, so their insurance is $150 a month. They also need fuel - average price of gas in the US is $3.25 a gallon. That Corolla has a 12 gallon tank, and gets good gas mileage - chances are our hypothetical person can get by with a full tank every two weeks, which works out to about $80 a month. That car will be pretty reliable, as long as you maintain it - let’s set aside $20 a month for things like oil changes and tires and windshield wiper blades and air filters and brakes. We’re down to $1350.
Okay, so we have a roof, a vehicle, food, phone, and internet. Let’s go ahead and start accounting for things like clothes, shoes, dishes/furniture, the kind of thing that you don’t necessarily buy every month but do require periodic replacement. Let’s set aside $200 a month for these kinds of expenses.
Chances are that one bedroom apartment doesn’t have a washer and dryer, so we need to account for laundry - let’s say $50 a month, or roughly $10 a week, plus a little extra to give us some cushion when the only machines open are the little ones, and the dryers are busted and take three rounds.
Our hypothetical person is trying to stay healthy, so they also have a gym membership - $50 a month will get you access to the Y, which is pretty sweet. Down to $1050 now. They probably also want some kind of entertainment, so let’s give ‘em a Netflix account and a little bit of DoorDash money - let’s go with $150 a month, which lets them eat out once a week and watch some TV.
$900 to go.
The average monthly student loan payment is $500.
Oof, that doesn’t leave a lot of wiggle room. Now that remaining $400 a month has to cover things like….doctor’s appointments, prescriptions, personal hygiene, and savings.
What that means is that someone making $65k a year is one emergency away from serious financial struggle. It means they have their needs met pretty consistently, but can’t afford to save for a house or a vacation, can’t afford to have children, can’t afford a wedding, can’t afford a serious illness. They are definitely not rich.
If you make $17000 a year, you deserve to make more money. Period. But that money shouldn’t come from the people making $65000 a year - it should come from the people making $2 million an hour.
