LOSING CALIFORNIA - Howe About That Race
The final race at the 2-mile configuration of what is known as Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California saw its checkered flag Sunday night. The Xfinity series after being weather delayed for rain and snow brought a close to the historic speedway. However, it was the Cup series show earlier in the day I want to talk about, and it has me asking, Howe About That Race?
The Pala Casino 400 started with final 5 wide salute, a cool presentation of the cars, which if this racetrack is turned into a short track like is planned, (on the remaining 89 acres that NASCAR didn’t sell) it certainly won’t be wide enough for something like that. It also won’t be able to put on the kind of racing that this track has come to be known for. On restarts, there is plenty of room fan out, and make your car work in which ever lane it wants to.
Fontana also provided race fans proof that NASCAR knew what they were doing with the next gen race car design. Last year’s race at Auto Club was fantastic, and almost had a classic (for those of us who grew up on early 2000’s NASCAR) feel to it. Comers and goers, mechanical failures, and consequences for spins. Maybe too much consequence when drivers had flat tires. Ultimately though, the racing product was embraced by fans first at this track in 2022, and after 2023’s event, many of us are still wondering why Fontana must change, even if NASCAR had roughly half a million reasons to do so.
Sunday’s race opened with Alex Bowman going to the lead from pole sitter Christopher Bell. The field shuffled after an early competition caution, and second caution would follow shortly after Brad Keselowski got turned in a racing deal by Corey Lajoie. Last year, those two probably would have had that incident battling in the back half of the field. This year, both drivers were well inside the top 15, and they would both rebound to finish there, with Keselowski scoring a much needed early top 10.
Ross Chastain took the win in stage 1 and 2, with Daniel Suarez also showing good pace. Trackhouse showed that 2022 was not a fluke. One of the races more dramatic moments came on a restart when drivers tried to anticipate a restart at lap 87. Joey Logano took the entire length of a newly extended restart zone in 2023 to mash the gas, while drivers like Chastain behind Joey tried to get a run by lagging back. When the 22 didn’t go, they had to lift or brake and soon the often talked about accordion effect took place and 10 drivers piled into the wreck, the main victims being Reddick, Bell, Almirola, and Preece.
Chastain got back to the front and the race settled into rhythm. There were multiple great battles between drivers throughout the field as the mix of this next gen car and the worn-out surface of Auto Club Speedway proved to be a rewarding mix for fans. A driver who found himself in plenty of great battles was Kyle Busch. The driver of #8 for Richard Childress Racing has had a great start to 2023 by having a podium finish at the Clash, and probably should have won the Daytona 500. After losing track position thanks to an early speeding penalty, Busch drove back through the field and emerged as the main competition to Chastain.
The success of the RCR #8 shouldn’t have been a surprise to anyone. Crew Chief Randall Burnett and team brought Tyler Reddick a fast piece last year and repeated the performance this season. The difference? Burnett didn’t push tire pressures to the point of causing a flat, and Kyle Busch is now the man behind the wheel. Busch did not waste the opportunity, running down Chastain before a green flag pit stop cycle. Busch and the #8 crew got out ahead of the #1 and drove off to score the victory. Chase Elliott was awfully fast on the final stretch of green flag racing but would settle for second getting passed Chastain with 20 to go.
Kyle Busch made it 19 consecutive seasons with a victory, in his second points race for his third team ever in Richard Childress Racing. This pairing looks lethal early. Busch is motivated, the team is quickly bonding to their new driver. With Reddick winning 3 races in the same equipment last year, this win could be the catalyst for Busch to smash those numbers. It’s early, but Kyle Busch should be considered a championship contender. We probably won’t know who a favourite for the title is in ’23 until after the Coke 600 in May at Charlotte. However, if Busch and team can continue this consistency, and finish the west coast swing with solid finishes, it will go a long way to keep one of NASCAR’s greatest drivers focused on not just regaining former glory, but focused on what could be a very special year.
So, there it is, a driver who won his first cup series race at the 2-mile track in Fontana, California, wins the last on the configuration. Whether NASCAR can create a successful short track with what land is left in their possession remains to be seen. Regardless, this 2-mile track will be missed by fans and drivers, and 2023’s race proved why. That’s just my take, so what’s yours? I ask you, Howe About That Race?

State Republicans Appear To Be Following The Lead Of The Likes Of McConnell & Boehner & Cashing In On Cannabis & Hemp Industry
We’d like to ask have they no shame ? But we know it’s less of a question and more just a factual statement. The war on drugs has become the cannabis goldrush and the Republicans mass amnesia sadly surprises no one reading the tone of the following report about many members of the party in Michigan grabbing what they can as soon as they can.
The Michigan Metro Times reports
Source: https://www.metrotimes.com/detroit/michigan-republicans-cash-in-on-the-cannabis-industry/Content?oid=21391035
Some Republicans are scrambling to get in on the ground floor of Michigan’s budding marijuana industry just a few years after resisting it.
Lured by the promise of big profits, Republicans are becoming lobbyists, consultants, attorneys, and entrepreneurs in a new, emerging market that is expected to soon rake in more than $1 billion in annual sales.
“Marijuana is the new auto industry. You’d be crazy not to get involved,” says Michelle Donovan, a conservative and attorney specializing in cannabis laws at Detroit-based Butzel Long.
Republicans’ support for marijuana didn’t happen overnight. But times have changed: There’s money to be made now.
Take former state Rep. Mike Callton, a Nashville, Mich., Republican who’s cashing in on recreational marijuana just months after he opposed the November ballot initiative that legalized it. The chiropractor now calls himself the state’s “premier consultant” for legal marijuana and is encouraging municipalities to embrace the industry by opening their doors to cannabis shops and commercial growers.
“Yes, I’m a Republican, but this is what people wanted,” Callton says, referring to the referendums that legalized medicinal marijuana in 2008 and recreational marijuana in 2018. “I work for voters; they don’t work for me.”
In addition to providing consulting services for local governments, Callton, who said he would never “touch” marijuana himself, helps businesses get approval from Lansing to operate medicinal dispensaries and grow operations.
Although he opposed the referendum to legalize recreational marijuana, he authored the bill that opened the door for medical cannabis dispensaries in 2016. Callton said he led the effort because the voters who overwhelmingly approved the 2008 ballot initiative to legalize medicinal marijuana wanted a convenient way to buy their medicine.
“People thought it was political suicide, but I believe in it,” Callton says.
Former state Rep. Roy Schmidt, a Democrat-turned-Republican, not only became a supporter of the industry; he took advantage of it.
In June 2015, the longtime Grand Rapids politician was busted growing and possessing far more marijuana than the state’s medicinal cannabis law allowed. Raids turned up 3 pounds of pot and 71 plants at two homes connected to him, and he was sentenced to 45 days in jail.
Then in September 2017, Schmidt was arrested on a charge of driving while under the influence of marijuana. He called the prosecution “a witch hunt” and an attack on marijuana users. A year later, a Kent County jury found him not guilty because prosecutors were unable to prove that the marijuana found in his system indicated that he was high while driving.
Since the trial, Schmidt has become an outspoken supporter of legal marijuana.
One of the most prominent and profitable roles Republicans are playing in the legalized market is lobbying.
Since Michigan is one of a few states that does not impose a “cooling off” period between public service and lobbying, conservative lawmakers, staffers, and bureaucrats are wasting no time using their inside experience and influence to help clients.
One of the most eyebrow-raising moves was in January, when in less than a month Republican Shelly Edgerton, appointed by Gov. Rick Snyder, went from running the state agency that oversees and regulates the marijuana industry to a top lobbying firm working on behalf of clients in the industry. Edgerton registered as a lobbyist and joined Dykema’s prominent Cannabis Law team in Lansing, which pledges to help entrepreneurs and others in the pot industry with “administrative law and licensing,” the key responsibilities of the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, where she was the director. Neither she nor the firm returned calls for comment.
Former state House Rep. Eileen Kowall, a White Lake Republican, also wasted no time becoming a lobbyist. Less than two months after term limits pushed her out of the Legislature, she registered as a lobbyist and signed a consulting contract with Michigan Green Technologies, a medical marijuana company, in February 2015. Kowall received $15,300 worth of shares from Cannabis Science, a Colorado-based company tied to Michigan Green Technologies, according to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
But SEC records show the shares were returned, and Kowall resigned her services because of a “conflict of interest” on Dec. 30, 2015.
At the same time, her husband, Senate Majority Floor Leader Mike Kowall, also a Republican, revived marijuana bills and shepherded them through the Legislature. John Dalaly, president of Michigan Green Technologies at the time, donated $400 to Sen. Kowall in November 2015.
Chiefs of staff embrace cannabis
The chiefs of staff for lawmakers who were key in advancing marijuana legislation left their Lansing jobs to join the marijuana industry. In November 2015, Brian Pierce quit as chief of staff to House Judiciary Chairman Rep. Klint Kesto, R-Commerce Township, and became a lobbyist for the now-defunct Michigan Responsibility Council, a medical marijuana association.
The spokesman for the Michigan Responsibility Council was Steve Linder, a Republican political consultant and fundraiser for the Senate Republican Caucus. In the Legislature, Kesto became a champion of the medical marijuana industry, sponsoring some of the bills, and collecting at least $13,900 in campaign contributions from cannabis interests between 2015 and 2016, according to campaign finance records.
Kesto’s counterpart in the House, Rep. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge, received at least $16,750 from the medical marijuana industry and played a major role in advancing pro-cannabis legislation. Never mind that he led a failed effort in 2010 to ban “marjuana clubs,” which were designed to make medical cannabis more readily available. Jones’ chief of staff, Sandra McCormick, left to become the executive director of the Michigan Cannabis Development Association, which works on behalf of businesses seeking marijuana licenses.
Money to be made
Although Michigan voters legalized recreational marijuana in November, it’s still illegal to buy. The Michigan Regulatory Agency, a new entity within LARA, will create the rules for recreational pot shops and commercial growers. By March 6, 2020, those dispensaries and commercial growers are expected to begin cropping up, and that means a “green rush” for those involved in the industry.
Recreational marijuana is expected to rake in $1.4 billion to $1.7 billion in annual sales in Michigan, according to projections from Marijuana Business Daily. That’s good news for communities and schools because recreational marijuana sales will be taxed. According to an analysis from the nonpartisan Senate Fiscal Agency, cannabis sales could generate $287.9 million in tax revenue by 2023.
The state recommends that communities decide whether they want to allow dispensaries and commercial growers before December, when the state will begin taking applications from prospective ganjapreneurs.
Callton, the Republican who was opposed to the referendum legalizing recreational marijuana, is now encouraging communities to opt in and collect the tax dollars.
“There’s no need for a Mexican cartel now,” Callton says. “It’s going to be a several-billion-dollar industry.”

UPDATED, Dec. 5, 10:35 a.m.: Real estate and art converge this week, as developers, brokerages and architects capitalize on the well-heeled crowd descending on Miami to boost the visibility of their luxury projects.
Brokerage firms are sponsoring art fairs, condo projects are hosting lavish parties and exhibits, architects and designers are holding book signings, and museums are offering art-studded VIP soirees during Art Basel Miami Beach and Art Week — all geared to lure the artsy set.
Christie’s International Real Estate, along with EWM Realty International, is a marquee sponsor of Art Miami and its sister event, CONTEXT Art Miami, for the eighth consecutive year. Christie’s and its affiliates will host an interactive booth at the main entrance of Art Miami, displaying luxury residential properties from around the world.
Art Miami’s works on display will include Peter Anton’s CHOCO TOWER, a 10-foot tall sculpture of five chocolates stacked on top of each other that weighs more than 1,000 pounds. Made from painted aluminum, the sculpture will be on display at Stuttgart-based Galerie von Braunbehrens’s booth, part of an edition of three works, each painted in different colors.
The developers of the Ritz-Carlton Residences, Sunny Isles Beach, which just topped off, will be the official sponsor of the 17th annual ArtNexus Party in Wynwood. Developed by Fortune International Group and Château Group, The Ritz-Carlton Residences will be hosting the VIP lounge during the party, with a scale model of the condo tower.
The event will also unveil Uruguayan artist Pablo Atchugarry sculpture for the exterior of the project’s Oceanside tower. Atchugarry will debut a sketch of his piece, and guests will celebrate the opening of his family gallery in Wynwood, the Atchugarry Art Center.
Acqualina Resort & Spa’s AQ Bar is hosting an event on Thursday, in partnership with Fine Art Mia. AQ bar will be adorned with a collection of original contemporary masterpieces by famous American artists Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Keith Haring and Jeff Koons and British contemporary artist Damien Hirst. Among them: Liz by Andy Warhol painted in 1964 and Alfred Hitchcock from 1983 and Damien Hirst’s Mickey in blue glitter from 2016.
Art Basel show partner Douglas Elliman is hosting a series of events, beginning with a property showcase in the Collectors Lounge of the art fair. Elliman is working with Artefacto, which is furnishing the New York brokerage’s new development gallery, and including a virtual reality presentation of new developments.
