Two years ago, Dean’s mom passed away, leaving him in charge of his younger brother Sam and the house. This summer, Dean realized he couldn��t keep the house on his own, Sam went off to college, and Bobby dropped a bombshell: he’s terminally ill and planning on leaving the auto shop to Dean.

Dean jumps to fix all the problems. He’s got to find a boarder to afford the mortgage, attempt to micromanage his brother’s life from across the country, ignore Bobby’s imminent death, and contemplate getting an automotive repair certificate from the local community college.

There are just a couple of problems: he can’t control everything, Bobby’s not going to let him ignore reality, deciding to go back to school is harder than it seems, and his boarder is none other than his high school friend and crush, Cas, who is back in town to teach at the local elementary school and, apparently, turn Dean’s life upside down even more.

Cas Milton is really good at managing things. He managed being abandoned as a child and then placed in an abusive home. He managed his adoptive father going to prison when his aunt and godmother finally surfaced. And now, at twenty-five, he’s managing going to college and while working the graveyard shift at Chaney’s 24-Hour Laundromat in the icy town of Leadville, Colorado. Life is manageable until one night a man covered in blood shows up at the laundromat, and instead of calling the police, Cas decides to handle it himself. Except this guy, one Dean Winchester, can’t exactly be handled. Against all odds, he and Cas form an unsteady friendship, and for once, Cas has someone to talk to about everything he’s managing. The only problem? Cas doesn’t really know who Dean is. And as it turns out, he doesn’t really know himself, either.

What would you do if someone covered in blood burst into your place of business? Well, if you’re Cas, sock him in the jaw and help him clean up! From this meet-weird, as the author calls this, Dean immediately takes a liking to Cas and in return, Dean really grows on Cas, as well. You’ll be hooked right from the beginning trying to figure out Dean’s mysterious life and his growing friendship with Cas. There’s also so much fun dialogue between the two, and I also adored that they see the good in each other even through all their self-doubt and self-deprecation. You’ll also truly appreciate their conversations because they can just talk about their lives with each other, and they actually listen to each other because that connection seems to be lacking in both of their lives until they meet each other. If you’re also a fan of Cas and Meg as besties, then you’ll appreciate their friend dynamics.

If you’re looking for an endearing story where we unravel the mysteries of Dean and Cas and are rewarded with Cas not being lonely anymore as he finds his “found family,” then please give The Laundromat a read!

14: A fic you didn't expect to write

Both the fleabagnatural series and my pinefest fic. Fleabagnatural started out as a one shot after I'd started to rewatch the show. The whole series just spiralled from there.

With pinefest, I had a whole other fic planned out and a week or so before drafts were due another idea came to me and I had to write it. This fic will be the death of me.

Cas pushed the thought out of his mind, and it didn’t come back until the end of the day, after eight hours at the library and picking Jack up from school and taking him to the park to play with his friends and then finding the first aid kit in his car for a scraped knee and then mac-n-cheese for dinner and then dishes and then bedtime and a round of “when’s Mommy coming back?” that always made Cas have to stand outside Jack’s bedroom door and cry.

As Cas did the dishes, he thought about Dean again. He knew exactly where Dean’s number was--saved in his phone and scribbled on a seemingly meaningless scrap of paper in his desk drawer.

(It was a receipt from their first date. They had gotten milkshakes.)

Cas continued washing the dishes, and then tried to watch some television (he had been making his way through the political drama House of Cards) but he couldn’t focus. Finally he caved and pulled out his phone, went to Dean’s contact info.

His finger hovered over the call button as he looked at Dean’s contact picture, a photograph from when Dean took Cas fishing one time. Dean’d been staring off into the distance when Cas snapped the photo.

He pressed the button.

Curious, curious! If I'd have been asked off the top of my head, I would have said I relied too much on dialogue for first lines, but it doesn't actually look like that's true at all, only 4 of the 20 were dialog. Much lower than I thought. Otherwise, my first lines seem to run that gamut. That makes sense to me though, I tend to pick them based very much on the POV and situation of the first scene. So if it's Dean and he's in his head about something, it'll be longer than if it's a simple declaration of something important to note about the scene or setting.

Also, wow. I had to go further back in time than I thought to hit 20. I think that's because I'm currently sitting on several unposted fics though, so it feels like I wrote these longer ago than perhaps I did.

But they spent a lot of time together, as two of the four advanced math students, and so it was probably just related to becoming friends. Cas was a nice guy. That, as far as Dean can tell after a few conversations, hasn’t changed. Besides, Meg Masters and Cas went to prom as friends. Cas told him so. “Look,” Dean finally says, “Can we just focus on work?”

When the notorious Enos brothers, Balth and Michael, ask them to drive from their home of Atlanta, Georgia to Texarkana, Texas and back in twenty-eight hours, complete with four hundred cases of illegal Coors beer, Dean and Cas take up the challenge.

But it's not easy, even for seasoned truckers--car chases, longing, and the open road all come with their own challenges, and then a figure from Dean's past reappears, hot on their tails.

1. I think the number one thing I'm most proud of is my Destiel Hallelujah AMV. I spent about 60-70 hours over a few days learning how to work video editing software for the first time. I think it turned out great!

2. I loved writing Leave A Message (After the beep!) Its a suuuuper happy, joy-filled one shot written before 15x18

3. I'm doing a s13 baby jack long fic!!! A thread with no end. I'm still writing it three ish weeks in. The newest chapter is currently late, but I've forgiven myself since it's the holidays.

4. Pressing the issue. It's a one shot, last night on earth s15 canon divergent I wrote before the hiatus ended. Dean and Cas use their words, because s15 was all about doing that until the finale that didng happen

5. Honestly??? Havent done anything for gomens in a while, but this collabrative crack fic Year of The Rat: Cheesus Christ was so much fun to make! It's full of fun jokes and I enjoyed my part in it. I'm still grateful for @joyfulomens for organizing that, it was great

6. Speaking of gomens, this Globe theatre romeo and juliet one shot Just As Sweet was the first time I felt proud of something I'd written. And I love that I can see how much better I've gotten since then

7. Tangerine, tangerine. This is the start of a destiel memory loss fic, post series. I just really like the start! I hope to do more with it, but its had to go on the back burner for now unfortunately.

I'd do eight, but the few I'm thinking of I cant find on my blog, so seven it is!
