Week 9 Recs: I'm Working, Here!

The Week 9 theme was, "I'm Working, Here!" I asked people to tell me about their favorite works-in-progress. We got some works still updating and some on hiatus, but all WIPs recommended from around the Yeehan community. Jack Rabbit by SmutWithPlot [WIP; 112,261 words] Reccer comment: "Hands down the best thing I've read in fandom"

If you want something a little different (and maybe a lot Western) that's an odd little bar in Koenji run by legitimate cowboy and westerner, Jesse James McCree, who sells his home cuisine of nachos, enchiladas, tacos, and quesadillas with salsa fresca and guacamole that is alleged to be made with tequila. It is a well-kept secret, but don't let his profuse amount of English and Spanish overwhelm you - his Japanese is also quite good, and there is Japanese staff. Just be careful: he flirts back. With anyone.

Macchiato by CommonNonsense [WIP; 64,661 words] Reccer comment: "I also love 'Macchiato,' the coffee shop AU that isn't a coffee shop AU, by CommonNonsense, & I regularly struggle to find a way to say, 'I hope this continues!' without applying any pressure"

Overwatch takes an extended mission undercover in a coffee shop in the heart of Seattle, a prime location to stake out their current targets. McCree's not one for the big city or fancy coffee, but the work needs doing, and it's not like anyone outside Overwatch will get it done. It should be a straightforward, if tedious, mission.

Then Hanzo Shimada complicates things by walking in, unaware, for want of a simple mocha.

Redemption Blues by clownsick, JessenoSabaku (orphan_account) [WIP; 71,658 words] Reccer comment: "It's probably abandoned but oh my good, I love this fic. Great side characters, especially the Omnics and a very intriguing Yeehan."

While on a mission to redeem himself in the eyes of his clan, Hanzo Shimada becomes indebted to a reckless vigilante, who constantly throws himself headlong into danger. The two clash in every way, except on the battlefield. There, Hanzo rediscovers the feeling of having someone to cover his own weaknesses.

Some things just pair up perfectly.

The sun and the moon.

Some things are just meant to be.

Even a bounty hunter cowboy and a lone wolf mercenary who discover how two loners can help each other be a little bit less lonely and how good life can actually be when you have the right person by your side to help change it for the better.

Some things just go together.

Hanzo is a new member of Overwatch, working undercover in a coffee shop with a few other agents. He’s adjusting to his new life – and making good progress on his missions – when he starts finding ridiculous messages scrawled on coffee cups… Messages that are, apparently, for him. While he’s convinced it’s all just a ridiculous prank, D.Va calls them “pick-up lines” and insists that he has a “secret admirer.”

Overwatch can be forgiven for keeping Hanzo at arm's length despite the endorsement of his intended murder victim. Six months of provisional membership, spent in the field, is a reasonable compromise.

But not everyone is on board with giving Hanzo a chance.

Cassidy, least of all.

The Chain by midgetnazgul [WIP; 188,243 words] Reccer comment: "I'm following a lot of WIPs, but 'The Chain' by midgetnazgul is definitely a fave!"

It wasn't that Jesse had lived his whole life with nothing - it was about keeping what he'd managed to cobble together.

For Hanzo, it was about trying to make anything truly his own.

And for both of them, the virtue of letting go.

After a mission gone wrong, Hanzo and McCree must lie low in New Mexico for a week. Together.

In the Pocket by robocryptid [WIP; 11,002 words] Reccer comment: "I recently reread 'Not that I'm complaining' and after that this Sequel intrigued me more than ever."

An AU in which both Shimadas joined Blackwatch and Cole Cassidy fell in love dick first, but that was almost 15 years ago. Now Overwatch is being Recalled, and Cole has to make up his mind.

Look Up and Wonder by MarieJacquelyn [WIP; 131,796] Reccer comment: "I will never ever shut up about Look Up and Wonder. I feel like Cass stans in particular will find his characterization quite enjoyable. (Idk if this will ever be finished, but even if it isn't, it's definitely worth the read, TRUST ME.)"

Jesse McCree gets a job offer to rescue one H. Shimada at 3:23 AM. He accepts it at 3:54 AM. It does not go according to plan. (An Overwatch/Firefly AU)

Mismatch by MsTrick [WIP; 15,280 words] Reccer comment: "I don't read a lot of ABO, but this fic grabbed me by the balls"

“And the only way your intel will be believed is if it appears your alpha’s claim on you has been overwritten." Hanzo sank into thought. “I…suppose, if intercourse is necessary, for this plan, then we should go through with it,” he said hesitantly, as though his insides weren’t fizzing hot with the possibility.

To his chagrin, Jesse burst into laughter. “Boy, how could any beta resist such saccharine sweet talk?"

Hanzo Shimada is an assassin, a murderer, and decidedly not a hero, let alone a superhero — and yet.

The Only Ten I See by robocryptid [WIP; 65,380 words]

Hanzo and Cassidy investigate a gang running guns through a small town in rural Tennessee. There's only one bedroom in the safehouse, half the town thinks they're dating, and Hanzo is weirdly angry about Cassidy's tight pants.

It can only escalate.

Alright, first things first, here are some writers that are definitely worth checking out:

SilverKitsune: 

Actually one of our admins here, she is an amazing writer. Also known as @soymilkheaven​ here on tumblr, she is partially responsible for the Purple Prose AU (Which is recommend you read, it’s hilarious), a very well written tainted au and a fair enough amount of smut to counteract the humor and angst haha.

Talesofsymphoniac

If you’ve been in the Zestiria fandom enough, you should at least know who @talesofsymphoniac​ is. She has written several works for Zestiria, Rosali and Sormik being the main pairings she has written for. She has also written for the Purple Prose AU along with a various assortment of AUs.

Seraphic_gate

Also known as @shippy-things​ here on tumblr. May I just start off saying, they are an amazing writer. So far their most prominent fic (as far as I’ve seen) is “Our Historia” which is a very fun read, although it hasn’t been updated in awhile (I know that feeling all too well, unfortunately aah)

FortunesRevolver

Yet another amazing author, so far they’ve written an assortment of canon-verse fics alongside aus. All of their fics are an entertaining read. Unfortunately, I don’t know if they have a tumblr or not ^^’ 

ShepherdSoreyDidNothingWrong

A good friend of mine, her tumblr is @shepherdsoreydidnothingwrong. She hasn’t written as many fics as the other authors mentioned on the list, but nonetheless a very good writer. She has written a role swap au and several other aus and canon verse fics. They’re all hilarious and you’ll find yourself at the very least chuckling at the dialogue or descriptions.

Now onto the actual fic recs; I scrolled through my bookmarks on Archive, so let’s get on with the show *rubs hands together*

Summary: Sorey remembers looking down at the image of his skin pulled back and he remembers the concave dip of a hollow stomach.He would never be able to forget it.

This emotional roller coaster of a fic deals with an anorexic Sorey and how Mikleo and the people around him help him get better. Canon-verse, angst, Sorey/Mikleo

Winds day By drunknpylades

Summary: Maybe Dezel’s not as absent as everyone thought. And who better to feel the wind than another wind seraph?

Small Dezel/Zaveid (For like a paragraph or two at best) All in all, it’s more Dezel looking after the party after his death. Dezel/Zaveid, angst/fluff

A Light that Never Goes Out By lyriumveins

Summary: Sorey is the new guitarist of an incredibly sub-par band and, truth be told, he loves everything about it. He’s settling into a comfortable routine of practicing and performing when his friends find out about his “complex feelings” for Mikleo, his classical pianist roommate who’s also tragically uninvolved in the band scene. Naturally, they decide to bring the two together.

In short, the band AU you never know you needed. I remember someone recommending this fic in a tumblr post and my god, I was hungry for more. It is fairly long, but such a fun read. Mikleo/Sorey, AU, humor

The Bone Zone By Haurvatat

Summary: So, as it turns out, the Bone Zone has nothing to do with paleoarchaeology or forensic anthropology.  For Sorey and Mikleo, this is simultaneously disappointing and intriguing. 

This is a funny smut fic that I had to add onto this list. Just two goofballs being oblivious and figuring out sex. Sorey/Mikleo, smut, humor

Mixed up By wolfgun

 Summary: A fight with a hellion seemed simple enough, until upon the defeat of it… The group finds themselves in a bit of an odd situation. The lasting malevolence manifested itself into a spell that knocked each of their souls into another’s body.

The body swap AU that every fandom needs and has. This fic is absolutely funny. Mikleo/Sorey, Dezel/Rose, Alisha/Lailah, humor

The Whisper of the wind By ProPinkist

Summary: After losing Dezel, Sorey tries to make amends.

There’s been too much fun on this list, so here’s some angst. Honestly, this is a big mush of hurt and tears but still good. Actually, this is one of the first fics I read in the ToZ fandom. Angst

Carry Me Home By Windian

Summary: Edna doesn’t expect to be comforted by Meebo, of all people.

Haha wow do you hear that? That’s me crying. Yet another fic that I read when I first got into the fandom. Hurt/Comfort

ive been wanting to make a fic rec list forever and now i finally can!!! i havent read every fic in the fandom obviously so this isnt an exhaustive list, but these are some of my personal favs, many of them well-known and some of them not!! most of these are sormik, but theres a few other ships mixed in

stranger in a strange land (by Authoress / @kiribakus) - rated t, sormik arranged marriages and fancy mikleos and wingman lailah and rose and really, really honestly good writing (as always), whats not to like?

Method Acting (by Metis_Ink) - rated t, sormik + dezerose I WOULD DIE FOR THIS FIC its one of my absolute favs theres so much pining and tension and a FAKE RELATIONSHIP and amazing writing i was grinning and squealing throughout the entire thing

taking back the crown (by hamnet / @happyprompto)  - rated m, sormik the biggest, best adventure a fic will ever take you on. its the captive prince au you never knew you needed, SUPER easy to get hooked on, features (understandably) asshole-ish mikleo and lovable zaveid. i love zaveid so much in this fic

the color of the wheat fields (by namio / @ghostofcrux) - rated g, sormik IVE SAID IT BEFORE AND I’LL SAY IT AGAIN: please let me live in this fic. it features some of the most gorgeously poetic writing you’ll read, a comforting small mountain village aesthetic, and slice-of-life adventures with sorey and mikleo. the only regret i have about this fic is that i didnt read it sooner!!

everything stays (by SportsAnimeRuinedMyLife) - rated t, sormik sorey comes back as a seraph but he’s lost most of his memory which means i cried bittersweet tears through this entire fic, its one of the purest sweetest most uplifting things i’ve ever read

toz drabbles (by centricexit / @saltin) - not rated, sormik if im being honest this is probably my favorite work in the zestiria tag on ao3. there are five drabbles and i love every single one, the first one especially, but i honestly have enough good things to say about all of them to fill pages and pages!!! theyre all achingly beautiful, its 100% worth your time to check them out

a light that never goes out (by lyriumveins / @tactician) - rated t, sormik BAND AU!!!! BAND AU!!!!!!! BAND AU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and some of the best characterization ever. this fic was so entertaining and funny and perfect, the found family dynamic of the group was super strong and IM NOT JUST biased bc i live for mikleo playing classical piano, trust me its worth a read

for Sorey, when he wakes (by centricexit / @saltin) - not rated, sormik the epilogue fic you will cry real tears over bc the writing is so beautiful. i actually burst into tears over some lines like how do you even cOME UP WITH SOMETHING SO GORGEOUS

A voice through the darkness (by strikedawn) - rated g, sormik SUPER CUTE SUPER WELL-WRITTEN fic where sorey is a motivational speaker and mikleo is a writer and honestly theres never been a more perfect au??? i loved every part of this and clung to every word

Elixir Vitae (by Brightwinged / @brightwingedworks) - rated e, sormik i was SO elated when i saw sormik armitization smut and i honestly got even more than i was expecting, bc it wasnt just smut it was INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN SMUT, with some sentences that made me pause and set down my phone and consider how perfect they were

demon’s venom (by healing) - rated e, sormik UM HELLO if you read sormik smut then youve probably read this fic bc ITS DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BEST SORMIK SMUT FICS OUT THERE and who doesnt love some good ol’ fashioned elixir induced sex ;))))

dreaming (by healing) - rated g, sormik, platonic edna/mikleo IF YOU LIKE the relationship between edna and mikleo and would love to see it explored more then this is 100% the fic for you. i never thought their relationship could hurt so much but this fic HURT MAN, it was so thoughtful and sweet and beautiful :’’’)))

eternity in the horizon (by aetherae) - rated g, gen ooooOOHH MY GOD THIS FIC. if you like alisha even a little you NEED to read this fic, bc its the most thoughtful, spot-on characterization of her ive ever read and the care with which the author writes blows me away every time i read it!!!!! theres so much knowledge and so much to dive into and it made me remember why i love alisha so much ;;;

ambigram (by SinningShipper) - rated e, sormik HEY this is seriously some of the best smut ive ever read. the way the author dealt with corruption while still balancing sorey and mikleos personalities is just flat out amazing. it was a really really well executed concept and im really curious to know more about whats going to happen, like a smut fic has never left me wanting a plot-filled sequel but theres a first time for everything

take us to glory (by velvetcrowbars / @sogokita) - rated g, sormik yall i started crying the second i read the SUMMARY of this fic, literally before i even clicked into it!!! ive honestly never cried so consistently through a fic like i did for this one. it was SO gorgeous and i lingered over every word and also the tsoa reference really got me good ;;;;

be the overflow (by laskaris) - rated t, sormik pay attention to that major character death warning bc boyyy does that pack a punch. honestly reading this fic felt like having a hot butter knife stabbed through my chest and i loved every minute of it. the writing is rly beautiful too which makes reading it feel a very satisfying kind of painful 

Equivalent Exchange (by MatrixCube / @matrixcube) - rated t, zaveid/mikleo ok i just have to put in a very strong recommendation for this fic bc its ZAVEID/MIKLEO WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGH A FIC THIS GOOD WOULD EVER BE WRITTEN FOR THE SHIP!!!! the plot is so good and the relationship is so well developed and i would honestly be tripping over myself to praise this fic even if it didnt include my rarepair otp!! this fic is the best thing to happen to me all year please check it out

close your eyes and come back (by aspiringpencilcase) - rated g, sormik HELLO I LOVE LAILAH AND MIKLEOS RELATIONSHIP AND THIS FIC IS SO BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN, i was smiling and crying a bit all throughout it. its so sweet and gorgeous ;;;;

For All Her Goodness (by Woofemus / @floopers) - rated t, roseali THE ROSEALI FIC WEVE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR, its honestly so good and so beautifully characterized and the fact that we get to see so much of what goes on inside of roses head and what happens after she becomes a shepherd is delightful!! i feel like theres definitely not enough fics from roses pov so it was really refreshing and i LOVED how she was written!!!
