Day one selections!
Better pictures coming up shortly, but here we have what I’ll be posting today.
Madagascar materials from a family who has a mine that started producing citrine! I’ve never had citrine from Madagascar before, so I’m excited about this. They also had the most gorgeous purple labradorite I’ve ever seen and I’ll hopefully be able to get more to stock up.
Brazilian materials from another small company - they had prasiolite (a “green amethyst” that I believe may be heated but I just thought it looked too cool to pass up), really nice amethyst, black tourmaline, and pastel fluorite.
Then I found a man from Italy who collects everything himself from the alps along the Italian-French border. He then takes all his finds home and does all the lapidary work himself. (I also got more cabochons from him that I’m going to use for jewelry!) he had Italian jade and serpentine.
I got just a few pieces of Australian boulder opal from a guy who also collects and does all the lapidary work himself.
And finally I got a few pieces of malachite and shattuckite from a small company from the Congo including those jewelry boxes that everyone keeps asking me to restock and bracelets! 🙏
I know this picture is horrible lol I will post better one when I list the items 😅

Sometimes you have to really sit with yourself and face your flaws. Today, I had to admit that I would be 100% susceptible to cursed jewelry.
See, I spotted this opal ring in a rock shop and instantly fell in love. It was billed as an Australian black opal and had this pretty blue sheen, but cheap enough that I doubt the quality of the stone. Didn’t matter, I loved it. It also didn’t matter that ring was just a smidge too small for most of my sausage fingers and just a bit too big to be a pinky ring. I could get it resized after all.
After letting it sit in my jewelry box for years, sometimes wearing it on my pinky with another ring to lock it in place I got it in my head that “hey, you lost some weight recently, surely now it will fit and you won’t have to spend money to get it re-sized!” (Not taking into account that a persons knuckle BONE isn’t really affected by that). Hubris in full swing I slipped it on my ring finger, and it went on no problem! Just like Cinderella’s slipper! Only I hadn’t realized my role in this story was that of the step-sister.
I dicked around for a while, pleased with myself, before I decided to take it off and see if it would fit on another finger. But it wouldn’t budge. No need to fret, sometimes a little natural swelling makes things stick. I soaped up, pulled…and nothing. I slathered my hand in lotion then twisted, zilch. I soaked my hand and then did a cold compress, nada. A dawning horror settled on me as I realized this ring had no intention of leaving my finger. Luckily circulation wasn’t being cut off so I wasn’t in immediate danger, but the flesh around the joint had grown impressively so the ring wasn’t leaving without extreme prejudice.
I’m alternating looking up ways to reduce swelling and trying to wedge it off, wondering if I’m about to have a really stupid visit to the emergency room. Because the more I screw with it the more stuck it’s becoming. Finally I see some advice about going to a jewelers to have them use a ring cutter.
I thought I had long ago killed any sense of shame in myself but as I went into that jewelry store to see if they would maybe, pretty please, cut this damn thing off me, I definitely felt it in full force. Stinging just as badly as my poor ring finger.
But my would be rescuer really wanted to try the ol’ “tug it off” method again. He had me stand with my arm in the air for about five minutes like an over eager elementary student with a question (to reduce the swelling) and then lathered up my hand with soapy water (ok, not sure about this one, whatever it was in a windex bottle but he was swearing up and down it wasn’t but at that point I honestly Did Not Care what was in his mystery bottle) he grabbed my ring from one side of the counter and then we had a little phalange tug of war.
Was this the stupid option? Absolutely. Did it work? Kinda. See with the vigor of a trapped coyote I nearly pulled him over to my side of the counter. And as the ring got to my knuckle I either flexed weird or he had a death grip on the stone because that lovely opal popped from its setting and went flying. His grip had slipped with the stones escape and I’m sitting there with an option to power through and get the now empty setting off or reset the whole process but now with sharper pieces. I did bully it the rest of the way off, with a nice scratch from the opals now empty cage. But it was finally OFF. Both of us then had to comb around the storefront trying to figure out where the rogue opal got too. We were crawling around on scrapped up hand and knee for another ten minutes in widening circles before finally, FINALLY, finding the cursed thing.
Though upside is the jeweler is going to turn it into a pendant instead. Maybe one with a quick break latch just in case.

Ethiopian Opals: Nature's Fiery Gemstones
Tumblr media
Ethiopian opals, with their mesmerizing play of colors, have captured the hearts of gem enthusiasts worldwide. These unique gemstones, primarily mined from the Wollo Province in northern Ethiopia, offer a stunning array of vibrant hues, from fiery reds and oranges to serene blues and greens.
The Beauty of Ethiopian Opals
Tumblr media
Ethiopian opals are renowned for their striking play-of-color, a phenomenon where flashes of color dance across the surface as the stone is moved. This is due to the internal structure of the opal, which diffracts light into a spectrum of colors. Unlike their Australian counterparts, Ethiopian opals often exhibit a more vivid and varied palette, making each gem uniquely captivating.
Tumblr media
Formation and Discovery
These opals are formed in volcanic deposits, a process that has been ongoing for millions of years. The volcanic activity creates a silica-rich environment, which, under specific conditions, leads to the formation of opals. The Wollo Province opals were only discovered in the early 2000s, making them relatively new to the gemstone market. Their rapid rise in popularity is a testament to their exceptional beauty and quality.
Types of Ethiopian Opals
Ethiopian opals come in several varieties:
Hydrophane Opals: These opals can absorb water, which can enhance their play-of-color temporarily. They are highly valued for their bright and dynamic color displays.
Black Opals: These rare opals have a dark body color, which makes the play-of-color even more striking.
Crystal Opals: Known for their clarity and the ability to see deep into the stone, crystal opals can exhibit a broad spectrum of colors.
Tumblr media
Caring for Your Ethiopian Opal
To maintain their beauty, Ethiopian opals require special care. Here are a few tips:
Avoid Prolonged Water Exposure: Although hydrophane opals can absorb water, it's best to avoid soaking them as it can alter their appearance temporarily.
Protect from Abrasion: Opals are relatively soft (5.5-6.5 on the Mohs scale) and can be scratched easily. Store them separately from other gemstones.
Avoid Sudden Temperature Changes: Rapid temperature changes can cause opals to crack. Always remove your opal jewelry before entering saunas or engaging in activities that involve significant temperature shifts.
Ethiopian opals are not just gemstones; they are natural works of art, capturing the essence of the earth's fiery creation. Whether you are a seasoned collector or a new admirer, these opals offer a connection to the vibrant and dynamic forces of nature.
Conclusion
Ethiopian opals, with their extraordinary play of colors and fascinating origins, are truly gems worth exploring. Their unique beauty and the story of their formation make them a prized addition to any jewelry collection. Next time you come across an Ethiopian opal, take a moment to admire the natural wonder that it represents.

Australian Opal Doublet Jewelry
Australian Opal Doublet Gemstones are the slices of opal glued to a black backing, designed to imitate the appearance of a solid opal. The slices of opal are generally adhered to a black backing because the color tends to become much darker and vibrant with its unique placement. However, the costing of the stones is comparatively much lesser than the original ones because of the small amount of genuine opal.

Australian Opal
Tumblr media
Australian Opals are a unique and sought-after gemstone known for their stunning play of color. These gems are formed from silica-rich solutions that have infiltrated cracks and spaces in rocks. Over time, these solutions evaporated, leaving behind the silica that eventually formed into opals.
Australia is known for producing some of the highest quality opals in the world. In fact, over 95% of the world's opals are mined in Australia. The most famous opal mining towns in Australia are Coober Pedy, Lightning Ridge, and Andamooka.
Opals come in a range of colors, including white, gray, black, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red. The most prized opals are those that display a brilliant play of color, which occurs when light diffracts through the opal's internal structure. This creates a stunning display of colors that seem to shift and dance as the gemstone is viewed from different angles.
Opals have been prized as gemstones for thousands of years, with evidence of their use dating back to ancient civilizations such as the Greeks and Romans. They have been associated with a variety of mythical and mystical properties, including the ability to enhance creativity, boost intuition, and promote emotional healing.
In modern times, Australian opals remain highly sought after by collectors and jewelry enthusiasts alike. They are often used in unique and eye-catching jewelry designs, such as opal necklaces, rings, and earrings.
If you are considering purchasing an Australian opal, it is important to do your research and work with a reputable dealer. Look for gemstones that display a strong play of color, with bright and vivid hues. Be wary of opals that appear dull or lifeless, as these may be lower quality or treated stones.
Overall, Australian opal rings are a beautiful and unique gemstone that are sure to make a statement in any piece of jewelry. With their stunning colors and rich history, they are truly a treasure of the Australian outback.

Ethiopian Welo Opal: A Gemstone of Fire and Beauty
Tumblr media
Opals are known for their unique play of color, which is a result of the diffraction of light through tiny silica spheres in the gemstone. One of the most sought-after varieties of opal is the Ethiopian Welo Opal, which is prized for its vibrant colors and stunning patterns.
History and Origin
Ethiopian Welo Opal was first discovered in 2008 in the Welo province of Ethiopia, which is located in the northern part of the country. The discovery was made by local farmers who stumbled upon the gemstone while digging in their fields. Since then, Ethiopian Welo Opal has become one of the most popular opals on the market due to its unique beauty and affordability.
Characteristics and Appearance
Ethiopian Welo Opal is a hydrophane opal, which means that it can absorb water and change its transparency and color. When dry, Ethiopian Welo Opal can be opaque or semi-translucent with a white, cream, or yellowish base color. However, when wet or exposed to humidity, it can become transparent with a play of color that ranges from red and orange to green and blue.
One of the unique characteristics of Ethiopian Welo Opal is its pattern. The gemstone can have a range of patterns, including pinfire (small dots), flash (large areas of color), harlequin (diamond-shaped patches), and ribbon (stripes). The pattern is determined by the arrangement of silica spheres within the gemstone.
Quality and Value
The quality and value of Ethiopian Welo Opal depend on several factors, including color, pattern, transparency, and size. The most valuable Ethiopian Welo Opals have a bright play of color with a consistent pattern throughout the gemstone. Large opals with a high level of transparency are also more valuable than smaller, opaque stones.
Ethiopian Welo Opal is generally more affordable than other types of opals, such as Australian Black Opal or Mexican Fire Opal. However, the price can vary widely depending on the quality and size of the gemstone.
Uses and Care
Ethiopian Welo Opal is primarily used in jewelry, including rings, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. Due to its unique play of color and patterns, it is often used as a centerpiece in jewelry designs.
When caring for Ethiopian Welo Opal, it is important to avoid exposing the gemstone to extreme temperatures, chemicals, or direct sunlight. The gemstone should be stored in a soft cloth or pouch to prevent scratches and damage.
Conclusion
Ethiopian Welo Opal is a beautiful and unique gemstone that has become increasingly popular in recent years. Its vibrant colors and patterns make it a favorite among jewelry designers and collectors alike. With proper care, Ethiopian Welo Opal can be enjoyed for generations to come.
