Auspicious Rakhi & Fancy Rakhi: Celebrating the Bond of Sibling Love
Raksha Bandhan, also known as Rakhi, is a special Hindu festival that celebrates the beautiful bond between brothers and sisters. This auspicious occasion is marked by the tying of a sacred thread, known as the rakhi, around the brother's wrist by the sister. The rakhi represents the sister's love and prayers for her brother's well-being, while the brother pledges to protect and care for his sister. Over time, Rakhi has evolved, and today we have two popular variations – Auspicious Rakhi and Fancy Rakhi.
Auspicious Rakhi:
Auspicious Rakhis hold a significant place in the hearts of people. These rakhis are usually made of sacred materials and carry traditional symbols and motifs. They are designed to invoke blessings and good luck for the brother. Auspicious Rakhis often feature religious symbols such as the Om symbol, Swastika, or Lord Ganesha, as they are believed to bring prosperity and success. The thread used in these rakhis is made of silk or cotton, representing purity and auspiciousness.
Auspicious Rakhis are more than just a piece of thread; they carry a deep spiritual meaning. When a sister ties an auspicious rakhi on her brother's wrist, she seeks divine protection for him. It is believed that the sacred thread wards off evil and negative energies, bringing harmony and positive vibes. The brother, in return, acknowledges his responsibility and promises to safeguard his sister's well-being. Auspicious Rakhis create a spiritual bond between siblings, fostering love, trust, and respect.
Fancy Rakhi:
In recent years, Fancy Rakhis have gained immense popularity among the younger generation. These rakhis are known for their intricate designs, vibrant colors, and trendy elements. Fancy Rakhis come in a wide range of styles, from beaded and stone-studded rakhis to ones adorned with feathers, pearls, or even cartoons and superheroes. They are crafted with creativity and innovation to appeal to the fashion-conscious siblings.
Fancy Rakhis are a reflection of contemporary trends and individual preferences. They showcase the artistic skills of the artisans who create them, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics. These rakhis add an element of glamour and style to the Raksha Bandhan celebration, making them a favorite choice for siblings who want to celebrate their bond in a unique and fashionable way.
While Auspicious Rakhi focuses on the spiritual aspect, Fancy Rakhi embraces the joy and excitement of Raksha Bandhan with its eye-catching designs. It allows siblings to express their personality and celebrate their relationship with a touch of elegance or quirkiness. Fancy Rakhis have become a fashion statement, not only symbolizing the bond between brothers and sisters but also reflecting individuality and personal style.
In conclusion, Raksha Bandhan is a time-honored tradition that strengthens the bond of love and affection between brothers and sisters. Auspicious Rakhis and Fancy Rakhis offer two distinct choices for celebrating this festival. Auspicious Rakhis hold deep religious and spiritual significance, invoking blessings and protection.Fancy Rakhis , on the other hand, add a touch of glamour and personal expression to the celebration. Whether you choose an Auspicious Rakhi or a Fancy Rakhi, the essence of Raksha Bandhan lies in the love, care, and commitment shared between siblings, transcending material forms and embracing the eternal bond of love.

The Month of Shravan and its Significance
Today is Shravana Krishna Ashtami, the eleventh day of Shravana masam (month). The month of Shravan is the fourth month in the Hindu calendar and falls in the western months of August and September. This month has a lot of spiritual significance and is considered auspicious for Hindus for many reasons.
Samudra Manthan
According to the Puranas (holy texts), it was during this month that the Devathas (Gods) and Asuras (demons) churned the ocean in search of amrit (nectar). Although the churning of the ocean gave them the amrit, it also gave them poison. Because the Devathas did not know what to do with the poison, they went to Lord Shiva for help. Lor Shiva swallowed the poison and stored it in his throat which for which he got the name, Neelkant (blue throat). This is why Shravana masam is important for the devotees of Lord Shiva.
Sola Somvaar Vrat
The Sola Somvaar Vrat is another reason why Shravana masam is important for the devotees of Lord Shiva. Those who want to do the Sola Somvaar Vrat (16 Mondays) usually start on the first Monday of Shravana masam and complete it on the last Monday Karthika masam. This vrat is mostly observed by unmarried women who want to be married to the man of their dreams. But married women can observe this vrat, too, for better health or fulfilment of their wishes. For this vrat, women fast all morning and afternoon and break it in the evening after doing pooja for Lord Shiva.
Mangala Gauri
The Mangala Gauri Vratham (pooja) is performed by married women for health, prosperity, and the long life of their husband. It is also performed for a happy married life. This vratham is only performed in Shravana masam on Tuesdays. After the pooja, a minimum of 5 married women are invited home for Haldi and Kumkum. The traditions for this pooja vary based on each family.
Varalakshmi Vratham
In South India, Varalakshmi Vratham (pooja) is performed by married women on the Friday before Poornima (full moon). Vara Maha Lakshmi or Varalakshmi is the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Women perform this pooja every year for the blessings of the Goddess on them, their husband, and children.
Raksha Bandhan
Raksha Bandhan is day that is celebrated all across India to honor the pure bond between brother and sister. On the day of Raksha Bandhan, the sister ties a rakhi on her brother’s wrist, the brother presents her with a gift, and they both promise to protect each other no matter what the circumstances.
Krishna Janmashtami
Shravana Krishna Ashtami, according to the Puranas, is the day Lord Krishna was born. Other names for this day are Krishnashtami, Krishna Janmashtami, or Janmashtami. On this day, Hindu families decorate their home with rangoli and make food the Lord Krishna likes.

What Are the Sawan 2024 Rituals and Significance?
Hindu mythology is full of interesting Vedic tales. One such legend we narrated at Vedic Story about the Sawan Shivratri in Hinduism. However, today we are discussing why Sawan Month is important in Hinduism. What is the significance, and should devotees observe the religion fasting or vrat?
Before we start narrating the significance of Sawan Shivratri month, let’s inform you that the Sawan began on July 22 and it will end on August 19.
What Are the Important Timings of Sawan 2024?
Sawan is the most important month in Hinduism and the Panchang Calendar.
It is the sacred month of Sawan, the month of rain, religious fasting, fertility, and soul purification.
Sawan month is a month of Lord Shiva that lasts for a full lunar cycle and starts Ashadha Purnima. However, the month is also known as the Shravan and Kawar Shivratri or Kawar Yatra. It began on 22nd July, Monday, and will end on 19th August, Monday. It lasts for 1 month, and this year the festival is going to last for 29 days.
What is the significance of the Sawan Shivratri Vrat or festival?
Sawan 2024 fast has special meaning and space in Hinduism. Sawan Sonwar Vrat is a rite that unmarried girls perform for getting grooms with qualities of Lord Shiva.
Goddess Parvati also performed Sawan Shivratri to get married with Lord Shiva in the month of Sawan. Thereafter, it became a ritual for Indian women to fast in Sawan month.
Indian mythology and sacred texts of Shiva Purana narrates that whoever keeps the fast in Sawan month on Mondays, Lord Shiva will bless them and fulfill the wishes.
Every Monday, devotees observe the fast throughout the day without eating food or water and pray to Lord Mahadev.
What Are the Rituals Devotees Can Perform During Sawan 2024 Month?
Throughout the sacred Sawan month 2024, devotees of Lord Shiva can pray by performing some rituals that not only clean the devotees internally but also bring happiness into their lives.
Kanwar Yatra
Kanwar Yatra is a festival that devotees perform by going to Haridwar and bringing holy Ganga water barefoot. This pilgrimage yatra signifies the cascading of Goddess Ganga from heaven into the life of Lord Shiva to cool down his poison.
Fasting
Many people in Hinduism perform fasts, the Sawan Somwar Vrat, throughout the month. They don’t consume food and water until the evening and after the prayer of Lord Shiva.
Shiva Lingam Abhishek
Devotees in Sawan month perform rituals and rites that cool down Lord Shiva and bless them with prosperity and happiness. They bathe Shiva Linga with water, milk, honey, datura, vel patra, and flowers. This ritual signifies the purification of devotees.
Chanting Mantras
Devotees chant the Shiva mantras, especially the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra in Sawan. It is believed that whoever chants the mantra gets protection from Lord Shiva himself and is blessed with long life.
What Are the Other Festivals Falling in the Month of Sawan?
Sawan month is sacred and has many ancient legends to this month.
Let’s find out some of the most auspicious festivals and Vrat fall in this month.
Shravan Shivratri: This festival falls in the Krishna Paksha of Sawan month. Devotees of Lord Shiva perform fasts and perform puja to the blessings of Mahadev.
Nag Panchami: It falls on the fifth day, Panchami of the Shukla Paksha. People worship snakes in this festival to get protection from snake bites.
Hariyali Teej: This festival also falls in the Sawan month. People worship Goddess Parvati and seek her blessings.
Raksha Bandhan: Sawan month also brings the most auspicious festival of Rakhi, the festivals of brother and sister. It is believed the Goddess Parvati tied the Rakhi to Lord Vishnu, and thereafter it signifies the day dedicated to brothers and sisters.
Kajari Teej: This festival falls in the monsoon Sawan month. Married women sing folktales and sing for good harvest.
Janmashtami: Lord Krishna was born on this day, and the entire India and Hindu people celebrate Krishna Janmashtami, the birth of the most beloved deity in Hinduism. Krishna was born on the eighth day of the darkest night in Sawan month.
Therefore, Sawan 2024 is a sacred month in the Hindu calendar.

Chapter 4
"Shl- umm ugh damn you're a mess, honey. Here." Manika offered a tissue to Shlokaa in the washroom but she just glared at it
"Well, at least you took care of that dyke." she smirked. "Now for that autistic bitch. Your friendship standards did go downhill, girl. I mean, I was here the whole time plus we've known each other since we were kids. There's one bitch who ain't into men and one who'd just cry and shake uncontrollably while being fucked by one. What has the world come to-"
"Shut your goddamn mouth, Manika. If you dare say one more-"
Suddenly one of the stalls' door unlocked and Aditi came out, sobbing. Shlokaa ran and hugged her.
"Oopsie." Manika looked at her, then at Shlokaa and finished washing her hands
"Get out. right. now." Shlokaa hissed
Manika raised her hands in mock defeat and left, eyeing her and smiling before she did
"I'm so so sorry. She was talking nonsense." Shlokaa kissed her friend's forehead
Despite it, Aditi laughed "Nahh, don't make it look better than it is. I am autistic, let's face it. But not severely, unlike unfortunate ones who are. There's still so much stigma and I-"
"I know, sweetheart. I know." Shlokaa held her tighter
"But one thing she got right. Crying and shaking uncontrollably? Why, that's just great sex and I want that, come on!" she laughed "But if you don't want to be friends anym-"
"Of course not, shut up!"
Aditi smiled wistfully "Speaking of friends, poor Vilasini."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Vilasini had been crying for a while now, curled up outside the little pooja grah.
Good for her she was a silent one, she'd be breaking down and nobody in the house would know. Right now, she just whispered
"Where am I going wrong, Kanha? I.. I thought if I could be as charming as you, maybe... I forgot your life was not easy either. It was everything but that and I feel you, bestie. Sometimes I feel you're the only one who gets me."
As if to contradict that right away, her phone rung. She slowly went to her room where it was and cleared her throat before answering.
"Hello?"
"Crying?"
Vilasini sighed and rolled on the bed, exhausted
"That evident?"
"Uhmmhm. You know, we could pull a Baazigar on her. I make her fall for me then kill her and throw into the sea hehehe"
"That's one big vendetta, R. But if she couldn't fall for a pretty face like me, how would she for an ugly ass like yours?"
"Even in this condition, you're roasting me! Talk about coping mechanisms."
"True. But thanks for the thought. What would I have done without you, mY saviour?"
A knock. "I'll call you back later, Raman."
"Complicated" would be an understatement for brown households. A girl and guy can't just be 'best friends'. Same sex ones can't be more than friends.
Vilasini opened the door to see her mother.
"Rakhi toh pehnaa do apne bhai ko." She came in, dressed impeccably in an orange sari and then whispered "gift bhi toh milega."
"Arey, ussi se koi meri raksha kar le. Paise main hi de du phir." Vilasini mumbled but went to change before coming into the living room.
"Meri favourite behen!! Where's my mithai and rakhi?!" Vilasini's brother squealed and then lowering his voice "should I tell mummy on this auspicious occasion that you're gay?" and chuckled
"Laao, mummy thaali. Yeh zyaada hi bol raha hain, iska muh mithai se band toh karu!"
"Hey! No fighting on festivals! Also, I have something to tell you both. We are shifting."
Vilasini's brother groaned and went inside his room. Vilasini came closer to her mother.
"What? Waapis? Mummy, you know how much it took for me to adjust to being your perfect girl and make this many friends. How many times do I keep doing it?"
"I know, beta but your papa is in such a job. He's in the army, we've got to respect that. Life is all about adapting and army kids have an edge because of this. But there's a good news. We are shifting to your favourite cousin Aditi's city! Khush ho na, beta? I made the arrangements so you'll be in the same school as hers!"
Vilasini's world tilted. Aditi's school is also Shlokaa's. That meant seeing her every day.
"The other day at didi's reception shaadi-" Vilasini thought about how she would tell about the incident to her mother. She finally said firmly "mummy, I have something to tell you."
"Jaanti hu. Tumhe ladkiyan pasand hain, na?"
Another shock. A greater one. It was a surprise how she was standing on her feet right now.
"Mum-"
"Shh. Kuch kehne ki zaroorat nahi hain."
"Did he tell-" Vilasini's mouth opened, pointing to her brother's room
She shook her head "Mujhe toh pata bhi nahi thha ki usse pata hain. Does everyone here know but me?"
"Aisa nahi hain, mummy. Maine toh abhi baba ko bhi.. he toh wouldn't even."
"Shh, fathers worry too but mothers are mothers aur main mummy hu tumhari. Mujhe nahi pata chalta toh kisse chalta? You know, there was a time when parents used to decide everything for their children, including careers? But only the child knows where their true passion lies. So, we shouldn't force our perceptions, our identity on them. Same goes for everything else, including who they love. Even if people decide for their children, they don't end up dealing with the consequences themselves, the child does. Journey sabki alag hain."
"Oye hoye, meri chalti phirti self help book." Vilasini couldn't help herself and embraced her mother, crying
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Didi, I want to tell you something."
Shlokaa turned around "What is it, Jai? Get your Rakhi tied fast I have work to do."
"I.. I don't feel like a boy."
Shlokaa sat up and blanked out "What?"
"Please don't tell anyone, didi. Please please! I just had to tell someone. I've been.. it's been a long time. I.. almost tried to. But then I realized I don't want to end my life. I want to live. As myself."
Dreading it, shlokaa held up her hand and touched the kid softly "It's all ok, my love. I'll be your sister regardless." and got a hug
"I love you, didi."
"I love you, too- um"
"Jaya." her sister's eyes twinkled with so much happiness Shlokaa thought she would cry
"Jaya, my beautiful sister."
Jaya sobbed in her arms and suddenly sat upright "And oh, I want to tie Rakhi to you. I've realized gender and love, romantic or platonic, never matters. All it takes is for it just to be there. And you've always protected me."
"Jai, Shlokaa! Come, let's do the Rakhi now." their mother called
On being called her dead name, Jaya grew sad but Shlokaa held her hand, mouthing "Don't worry, we will handle it."
"There you both are! Also, Shlokaa, a new student is coming to the school tomorrow. Help me with her files and to get her settled."
Shlokaa's mother was a teacher and very serious about her work. She had her files open even on the table right now.
"Oh, it's Aditi's cousin Vilasini. She'll be in your class."
