Au Pair
Hi Liebeleute,
As my promise, I will continue my story after I arrived in Germany. Some people asked me, what did you do in the small village, what did you do for a year in Germany, how could you speak good German. Ok, now... keep your eyes to read this page....
What's Au Pair?
I can say at the beginning, that being an Au Pair is not an easy job, if you have no passion for the children, I suggest, don't do that! Because you will feel like on the hell for one year. one year! Could you even imagine, one year stay with the things that you hate?! I dare to say, based on my experience, that Au Pair same as a second "mother", do all the things related with housework and kiddos.
Let me tell you my one-year experiences, but I don't want to criticize anyone (re: the family members) on my lovely page. Even though I know some people do that or the family wrote something bad about their Au Pair. For me, it's just gonna waste my time-
Firstly, you will live with a family that not your own family, of course, it means that you will have another rule. You should follow the rules of your second family- I prefer to say, the second family, rather than guest-family. Be careful, from guest family could be also ghost-family..... if.... you don't like them or they don't like you :) Secondly, you will work basically 30 hours per week, means that 6 hours per day, if they ask you to work from Monday to Friday, or 5 hours per day if you have to work during the weekend. In general, the weekend is just on Saturday. I have almost never worked on Sunday, except urgency or occasionally. But I guess, it only happened three or four times during my one year there.
My second family has three children, two boys (12 and 8) -as I remembered and one little princess (5). They live in a small village, the school and the kindergarten are around there. I have had to drive a car according to bad bus connection -I mean, Germany, of course, has very excellent public transport, but not in the small village- well, thats the reason why I had to able to drive the car. They paid for my German course (not for the private institute), gave my pocket money, fully fueled the car in every month. We were always starting breakfast at 7 am, then around 8 am I was bringing the little princess to the kindergarten almost every morning. Also, I had two times per weeks, which were Tuesday and Thursday German courses in Volkhochschule. The school is 20 Km far and I drove around 30-45 mins.
I was usually working from 00.30 pm until 5 pm, depend on the parent's work schedule. Cook for the lunch and lunch with the kiddos, more often followed with dramas of -no vegetables, I am not hungry, I don't like the food, I want to eat this and that and this and so on- Noon was kinda of my hell-time, because after lunch I had to hurry to bring little princess to ballet, horse riding, sports training, and besides that the boys also have had to go to handball training, did their homework, fought each other, did the stupid stuff that was making me always angry, made their bedroom messy and so on. Sometimes I've just fucked up!
Well, thats your job as Au Pair, but once again, depend on how you deal with your family. I also need to do weekly tasks; iron the laundry, clean the house (vacuum and sweep) and the children's room.
How to handle all those things?
When I lived in Indonesia, I was living with my family and I never do kinda do those stuff -housework- because we have a lady who clean the house, cook for us, do the laundry. I like children, but it never comes up in my mind that I should stay every day with children.
So... on the first time, it shocked me!!! I feel like felt on the trap- shit! I was a career woman, working from 9 to 5 and now.. my life completely changed, not because I married, then being a housewife, but.. because I decided to be an Au Pair! Well, Ok, I wouldn't give up.
I was thinking of a strategy to handle it. The first step, how can I talk with them if I don't speak German? Yes, they speak English but the children don't and I spend most of the time with the children. So that, I was learning German not only on the course class but also at home; 4 hours in the morning when the kiddos at school and kindergarten then continue 4-5 hours on the evening after dinner. Three months, my skills are slightly increased. The second step, open yourself to deal with the reality what you're facing now. If you decided to be an AuPair, then you must know also the tasks -children and housework- It's never easy, yes, but as long as you can still tolerance with their rules, habit then, it's fine. They couldn't every time follow or agree with you and you neither. so, it's normal. Just do your responsibility and get your right. The third step, feel it like it's your home and they are your family. why? if you just think, it's a job. It would burden you with a gap between boss and employee. You will think that you are like an employee and they are your boss. I don't wanna do that because I came to this family to help them and I will get advantages of it, I came not to work. In other words, just try to enjoy new things that came up into your life.
Anyway, I was enjoying my experiences as an Au Pair, even though was so hard. It's also the most precious encounter that you never ever get anywhere. This is like doing a practical case. In my ages of twenty-one, I learnt plenty of life's meaning; how to manage time and everything, how to deal with the children and housework, how to get through in the family with different culture, opinion, thinking and language, how to be more respectful, how to be more open with other people opinion, and other things that I can't write one by one. I could say, I moved out from my comfort zone and tried a life adventure.
So, for everyone who's struggling to decide to move out from the comfort zone being an Au Pair. It might be a good decision. Don't be afraid to try something new.
Liebeleute, I will continue to write another my Au Pair stories on the other page because I still have tons of funny, silly, lovely stories about my Au Pair adventures.
See you on the next page!
loves and kisses,
Nay

The Endless Wonder
"Hey, what are you doing in Germany?", "How come you can go to Germany?", "Please bring a 'bule' for me!"
Literally, those sentence represent this post's title. Before I start this post, I'll let you know myself first. So, I'm Lewi, an Indonesian girl who currently living in Germany, and I graduate from State University of Medan, Indonesia and my major is German Language Education. That's it and without any further ado, let me start all of this lol.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2bfe8290b26573b97c1242d6df55385e/88a2febe8d574815-70/s540x810/813414507132fea9235185e1ea8a658c57808b28.jpg)
Some people are dreaming to go abroad, and some people don't. I'm one of those people of dreaming to go abroad. But I decide to set a life goal to go to Germany five years ago, at the end of my first semester in college.
"Well, now your dreams come true, right?"
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ec574f4822d468d7f76d8b7047910cfb/88a2febe8d574815-6a/s540x810/5de9e88db3220eda5910a660f1db6ac86ad44d8b.jpg)
Yes, I made it to Germany and I've planned to come here by Au-Pair Program a few years ago. You might be wondering what is Au-Pair and maybe for some people it sounds pretty familiar. Au-Pair Program is a form of cooperation of Germany and Indonesia (and other country also). The Au-Pair Program is designed for people who wants to learn German language and the culture, all at once.
The Au-Pair will be live with the local German people, and by living along it'll help you to know better their culture and vice versa of course. The fun part is you'll be fully-funded by the Government. You'll got a monthly Taschengeld and also a supported money for your language course. Yep, you'll have an opportunity to go to a language course to master the language.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/deefe9693a5c284dbf33f135f534c578/88a2febe8d574815-13/s540x810/368c3df4902714f74b36656285e82c2a52dd16d7.jpg)
So, you are fully-funded, you also have an opportunity to live with local family, attend a language course, what's the feedback for the family?
In my opinion, it's all about give and take. By living in their home, you can help them with the house chores and take care of their children when the parents are busy and not at home. But, the duty time is only 6 hours/day. You're not a house maid and have to do it all day. Remember it.
If you want to know more about Au-Pair, you can find more in the following link.
So, are you interested to join the Au-Pair Program?
If yes, I'll help you to prepare it from how to find the family until documents you need for applying visa Au-Pair. Please kindly wait for my next post. Ciao!
