Dear Noah and Madison, Since I can’t go back to work because of the state lockdown, I thought I would try the homeschool thing with you yesterday. It was...interesting. I discovered that #AuntieTJsSummerSchool when you were younger is a little different than #AuntieTJsQuarantineHomeschool when you have a mind of your own. Side note: God bless all the preschool and lower elementary teachers. I couldn’t do your job. When we first sat down, Noah, you were sharpening your pencil in a small pencil sharpener. The cup that held the shavings fell to the floor, so you and Maddie picked up the shavings and put them back in the cup. When you finally came back up, you started sharpening again, Noah... And then proceeded to drop the shavings two more times. It probably took us 15 minutes just to get started on something educational. It didn’t help that you, Maddie, kept inviting more students into our class—your stuffed dog, Emily’s rhinoceros, your purse shaped like a dog... Which made Noah bring in his rock named...Rocky. When we finally got started, and I asked you, Maddie, to count out 23 blocks... You decided to build houses and snowmen with the blocks instead. And Noah, when I asked you to write a math problem that involved the number 23... You decided to make up a multi-step addition problem that spanned 3 pages... And you made me figure it out instead. But I’m not hating on you for that. I am THRILLED that you love math. You sat with me the whole time and helped me figure out that 15,000,000+ sum. And you were looking up math videos on YouTube Kids on your own after that. And I was impressed with you, Maddie, when we went on a scavenger hunt in the house, looking for things that started with the letter T. I only asked you to find 3 things...and you went up to 12. It was awesome to hear you sounding out the word and figuring out on your own which letter it started with. So even though we only got through 2 out of the 6 activities I planned... It wasn’t a bad morning. I had fun with you guys. But let’s try to focus a little more today, shall we? I really want to play laundry basketball. Thanks. See you later. We worked with counting blocks today. With Noah, we talked about place value, regrouping, and digits. He started coming up with bigger numbers, and when I ran out of blocks, he learned how to draw his own representations of what he wanted. He also started coming up with patterns in his digits on his own. Maddie then made up a model of a number, and Noah would write it.
.
I was pretty impressed! I originally only intended to work on math with Noah for a few minutes, but he ended up liking it and working on it for a lot longer. He said, “I thought it was boring at first, but it’s really fun! I like it!” 😍👊

#AuntieTJsSummerSchool goal: grow a garden. We started by reading these books together. Then today, we got a few bean seeds ready to sprout so we can see how they grow. They wrote a little about what they observed, and they decided to record a video about what they were doing. We’ll see if we can stay focused enough to get to garden status! 😆 https://www.instagram.com/p/CBL8-HdBRVG/?igshid=16508ewyey94j
