So like I had to paint a rock for a rock garden. And obviously I painted Augustus and Agrippa being best buds(tm) but I just realised they look EXACTLY like Will and Nico and I don't want people to think I'm a solangelo shipper.

My brain: BUT WE LITERALLY JUST SAW HIM IN THE MUSEUM A FEW HOURS AGO
Me: Yes, but AGRIPPA
To be honest, I saw so many AMAZING things, but unfortunately I didn't have enough time to sit and sketch everything I like (especially beautiful amphorae), so all I had
a) A LOT OF PHOTOS
b) small sketches on my old phone after the visit

First & Last lines
Rules: Post the first and last lines of the last 10 fics you posted.
thanks @mari--lace for the tag!
1. Rome was not built in a day First: Rome was not built in a day. Last: “I love you too.”
2. Your heart is a city First: "Here.” Agrippa's hand is steady on Octavian's chest, dividing the fingers from the beating heart are a few layers of skin, a cage of bones.  Last: “Here I have you, Marcus.”
3. The Orion Belt First: Fred is lying next to George, he has come to steal space in the twin's bed; they were much more comfortable as children, now that they're almost eighteen they have to squeeze so that one doesn't fall ruinously to the ground. Last: "Come closer." George interrupts him, then swallows softly. Jordan's hand adjusts behind his neck, "Closer."
4. Under the starlight First: Legolas' hand is young, soft. Last: “Amrâlimê.”
5. your life is here, so is mine First: “You have blood here.” Thanatos' wet thumb wipes a spot on his bare shoulder, the Death God's sigh tickles his skin. Last: And then a kiss.
6. Inevitably, above the clouds First: In-evitable.  Last: Fred smiles mischievously, reaching down to brush her lips. “By dint of complimenting me, I'm going up to the moon.” Then he kisses her. “Will you come?”
7. And they lived happily (and powerful) ever after First: Once upon a time, in a land far far away, there was a tiny kingdom, peaceful and magical. And in the land far far away, in that tiny kingdom, there was a palace so large… Last: (Also Mei Mei, whom Satoru paid handsomely so that she would go as far away as possible).
8. breaking load First: In physics, the breaking load or breaking strength is the limit, in terms of external force or stress, beyond which a material is permanently unserviceable from the viewpoint of durability. Beyond which, simply put, the material breaks. And it is impossible that it will not break if the applied force is given by an infinite mass. Last: There is no breaking load, there is nothing that can break this thing.
9. All this beauty and it's just for me First: Satoru takes a long breath, when he releases it, a white cloud makes its way into the night. He watches it dissolve, the silhouette of the Tokyo Institute of Occult Arts appears behind it.  Last: No one has ever seen Satoru like this. Suguru smiles, raven hair tickling the skin of his forearm. "...And it's just for me."
10. Overdramatic and true (to my lover) First: The practice field is covered with snow, the sky is a ghostly white - looking out the window it is hard to distinguish when one begins and the other ends. Mei Mei tries, clenching her eyelids and trying to imagine where the running track has gone and where the corner of grass she has fallen on just five times in her student years is hiding instead. Someone's shoes on the field make a crunching noise against the floor, she distracts herself and diverts her gaze inward. " What a pain in the ass."  Last: "As if I haven't just discarded yours, Suguru."

“Agrippa doesn’t want your power. He wants your love.”
-
Tracklist and selected lyrics with historical annotations below:

I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
He's gotta be strong and he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight

One step ahead, a thousand miles
A trail ablaze to the Aventine

Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) by Eurythmics

We made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Like soldiers in the winter's night with a vow to defend

Wasn't meant for me but I took the fall
It's a cowboy code, it's an unwrote law
When you mess with one you gotta take us all

If you want a father for your child
Or only want to walk with me a while
Across the sand
I'm your man

And there's certain things that I ignore

I think there's a lot of meta that can be said about Scott as a leader, and the type of leader that he is and has been forced to be.
You could make an argument that, for all that he's very good at being a leader, it's not actually something that he tends to seek out. Xavier initially made him field leader and kept up and vanishing on him, which is why he tends to go from field leader/general to a more all-purpose leader a lot of the time.
I think really, Xavier's REAL successor should always have been Jean, rather than Scott. He should be the Agrippa to her Augustus. The problem is that even when he skips off to space or something, Xavier's still prominent, at least in theory, until the early 00s. When he finally goes too far, Jean's dead. So we have Scott in a position that he's really not suited for, which is probably why he ends up relying so heavily on Emma, back when they were running the school (either in the mansion or in LA), and then Magneto - at least in an emotional support way, when they went full swing into Utopia.
(I actually sometimes wonder if that wasn't part of the real reason that Hank left. Because Scott ended up leaning so heavily on the others that Hank was feeling unappreciated. The whole "your plans never got you tortured" was so laughably incorrect that I always thought it was clear there was more to his feelings.)
X-Men Blue swings at the idea I think, by making Teen-Jean the O5 team leader. But I think it doesn't quite hit the mark because there are different leadership skills at work. Scott IS uniquely suited to field leadership, but Jean's more suited toward the ideological, broad minded leadership that Xavier provided beyond the team. The O5, being time lost teenagers amidst a sea of angry adults, weren't really in a position to utilize that. (We DO start seeing it, I think, once Jean returns. And it's kind of a shame that we never get to explore the dynamic of her and Scott as reunited co-leaders before Krakoa comes back in swing.)
I think Scott, as Captain Commander, was probably in the position that he was happiest. It just couldn't last, because the Council made stupid decisions, leading him and Jean to decide that the X-Men are necessary after all.
I think Emma and Forge (and implicitly others, I feel like I remember some other grumbling) are being decidedly unfair with their expectations/assumptions. But I feel like that's par for the course for the poor guy.
I do wonder if that isn't something we'll see toyed with in the future, since it does maybe seem to be an element in the Rogue-Scott dynamic pre-Raid (that whole weird "stepping up" bit. The guy was imprisoned for six months! You'd think he could have a bit of a break, right?)
I think my biggest problem with Xavier's vision of Krakoa (Watsonian critique, not Doylistic), is that he seems to think that just because permanent death isn't a thing anymore, then everything's safe and fine.
I'm not saying Xavier shouldn't have invited ex-villains onto the island, but it's obvious very quickly that there are no safeguards or protections for any of these villains' former victims. Or any future victims.
So we get some awful scenes like Jamie Braddock taunting Meggan or Mr. Sinister telling Scott that he's prettier when he smiles (that one in the middle of the fucking COUNCIL meeting) and there's apparently nothing that can be done about that?
The Shadow King gets to hang around children, leading to the death of Gabby Kinney (and in her case there was some question about whether or not they'd resurrect her because she was a clone.) Sinister, we're told in Hellions, still has an ORPHANAGE. There weren't kids there, at least, but still. The fuck?
And then there's Madelyne Pryor. And yes, I agree that, back in the 80s, she was screwed by the narrative. But she's done a lot of things since then. Maybe. I admit, I can't really keep track of whether or not the one who tortured Scott and company in the 00s was actually THIS Madelyne or another dimension's. But THIS version is introduced torturing people.
Alex pushes for her resurrection. And any counter argument is immediately neutralized by pointing out that Sinister is on the Council. And...well, yeah. But it's POSSIBLE that some of Madelyne's victims might not have been on board with her running free, but that's not a thing we get to hear. (We are told that Jean supported her resurrection much later. Which I do believe, but I also think the narrative doesn't really allow any other possibility.)
Xavier's very self-congratulatory about the no prisons on Krakoa thing. Of course, there's the Pit. You go in there if you're recalcitrant and break the rules. Even if you're a child. And then you get tortured by Sabretooth because no one bothers to check in on the prisoners, apparently.
To break immersion, in a Doylistic sense, I really enjoy that Krakoa has its darker sides. This isn't a paradise for every character, and it's no surprise, when you think about it that the Summer House is on the Moon instead of Krakoa proper.
But in a Watsonian sense... Any fan of the Wolverines can verify that you don't need permanent physical harm to have a massive amount of trauma and pain.
It makes sense. Charles has that King Arthur fantasy, and part of that involves seating some of his strongest enemies at the Round Table. And it makes sense that the man whose first X-Man was an abused child that he rescued and made into his field commander doesn't necessarily have an awareness or appreciation of long term trauma.
But somehow Cassandra Nova gets to be resurrected in a safely isolated place, away from any and all possible victims. Funny how that wasn't an option for anyone else.

rome was not built in a day
Octavian breathes again, his cheeks flushed from the accusations and from what Marcus is up to. He feels himself boiling over. “Rome...”
Agrippa strips him of the top of the tunic, tickles his chest. “Rome, can't you see that's all you think about? Then you should let me build.”
Curse the day he chose him as a aediles. “Rome was not built in a day.”

Wall painting on black ground: landscape, from the imperial villa at Boscotrecase. Roman, Pompeian last decade of the 1st century BCE. x
Many private summer villas were located along the coast near Naples. One of the most sumptuous must have been the villa built by Agrippa, friend of the emperor Augustus and husband of his daughter, Julia. It stood overlooking the Bay of Naples from a spot near the modern town of Boscotrecase. The villa was partially excavated between 1903 and 1905 after its accidental discovery during work on a railway. Wall decorations that still survived in four bedrooms were removed. The Metropolitan Museum acquired sections from three rooms and the Archaeological Museum at Naples received the rest.
Agrippa died in 12 B.C. and his son, Agrippa Postumus became the villa's proprietor in 11 B.C. as inscriptions found there indicate. The frescoes must have been painted during renovations begun at the time. Painted by artists working for the imperial household, they are among the finest existing examples of Roman wall painting.
The so-called Black Room was one of a sequence of bedrooms facing south toward the downward slope of the mountain and the sea. The source of light was a wide doorway giving onto a terrace or promenade.
This ambiguous and sophisticated decoration is a masterpiece of the so-called third style of Roman wall painting, which flourished during the reign of Augustus. The theme is a playful rendition of architectural motif. A low red dado serves as the base from which a skeleton of thin white columns appears to rise against a black background. There almost weightless columns support pavilions, candelabra, tripods, and a narrow cornice that runs around the room. They were embellished with jewel-like decorations. On the back wall tiny swans, the bird of Apollo, patron god of Augustus, perch improbably on threadlike spirals, and yellow panels with Egyptianizing motifs must have brought to mind the recent annexation of Egypt after the death of Cleopatra in 30 B.C. This architectural scheme creates almost no sense of depth or volume. The black walls behind appear at once to be flat and to dissolve into limitless space. Tiny landscape vignettes float like islands in the middle of this blackness. Burnished to a high polish, these walls must have appeared magical indeed when illuminated by lamps at night.

Famous people
Tag list of famous people from Ancient Rome and Greece. A few hellenistic rulers and some Etruscans are also included.
And for some reason the page is not working properly. The HTML code is there, but it only works on my dashboard. On this page links are inactive. I figure that page only understands “/tagged/Agrippina-the-Elder” - versions, but I’m too lazy / busy to rewrite the code. So if you want to check a tag, you’ll have to copy and paste it after the word “ .../tagged/”. And same goes for all the lists below.
