Could covid be driving an increase in sudden infant death syndrome? Further study is needed, but these statistics aren't looking great.
Key Points Question What is the association between the COVID-19 pandemic and sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)?
Findings In this cross-sectional study of 14 308 SUID cases, the risk of SUID and SIDS increased during the intrapandemic period (March 2020 to December 2021) compared with the prepandemic period (March 2018 to December 2019), with the greatest increases noted in 2021 (9% for SUID and 10% for SIDS). A marked statistically significant monthly increase in SUID from June to December 2021 was observed.
Meaning These findings suggest that the pronounced shift in SUID epidemiology during the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic may be associated with altered infectious disease transmission at the time.
Abstract Importance Infection has been postulated as a driver in the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) cascade. Epidemiologic patterns of infection, including respiratory syncytial virus and influenza, were altered during the COVID-19 pandemic. Comparing month-to-month variation in both sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) and SIDS rates before and during the pandemic offers an opportunity to generate and expand existing hypotheses regarding seasonal infections and SUID and SIDS.
Objective To compare prepandemic and intrapandemic rates of SUID and SIDS, assessing for monthly variation.
Design, Setting, and Participants This cross-sectional study assessed US mortality data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for January 1, 2018, through December 31, 2021. Events with International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision codes for SIDS (R95), unknown (R99), and accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed (W75) causes of death were examined. The data analysis was performed between November 2, 2023, and June 2, 2024.
Exposure COVID-19 pandemic.
Main Outcomes and Measures The primary and secondary outcomes were the monthly rates of SUID and SIDS during the COVID-19 pandemic (March 1, 2020, to December 31, 2021) compared with the prepandemic period (March 1, 2018, to December 31, 2019) as measured using generalized linear mixed-effects models. Seasonal trends in RSV and influenza rates were also examined.
Results There were 14 308 SUID cases from January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2021 (42% female infants). Compared with the prepandemic period, the risk of SUID increased during the intrapandemic period (intensity ratio [IR], 1.06; 95% CI, 1.05-1.07). Monthly assessments revealed an increased risk of SUID beyond the prepandemic baseline starting in July 2020, with a pronounced epidemiologic shift from June to December 2021 (ranging from 10% to 14%). Rates of SIDS were elevated throughout the intrapandemic period compared with the prepandemic baseline, with the greatest increase in July 2021 (IR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.13-1.22) and August 2021 (IR, 1.17; 95% CI, 1.13-1.22). Seasonal shifts in RSV hospitalizations correlated with monthly changes in SUID observed during 2021.
Conclusions and Relevance This cross-sectional study found increased rates of both SUID and SIDS during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a significant shift in epidemiology from the prepandemic period noted in June to December 2021. These findings support the hypothesis that off-season resurgences in endemic infectious pathogens may be associated with SUID rates, with RSV rates in the US closely approximating this shift. Further investigation into the role of infection in SUID and SIDS is needed.

TUOMAS HOLOPAINEN Reveals His Favorite Thing About Each NIGHTWISH Bandmate
Tumblr media
In a new interview with Bear Wiseman of Off The Record, NIGHTWISH keyboardist and main songwriter Tuomas Holopainen was asked to name his favorite thing about each one of his bandmates, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, multi-instrumentalist Troy Donockley, singer Floor Jansen, drummer Kai Hahto and bassist Jukka Koskinen. He responded (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "They are the only other people in the world that I think about when I'm writing songs, because it's really important that they would be inspired about the stuff as well.
"I've known Emppu for more than 30 years, and he's just an incredible persona in the way that everything's always good with him," Tuomas continued. "He's the easiest-going bandmember there is. He does his job — his guitar playing is as professional as anybody — but other than that, it's always, like, 'Yeah, whatever.' 'Yeah, that sounds good. I'm fine.' He's so carefree, I'm almost envious about that because I worry about stuff constantly. So to get into his mind every now and then would be something else. He's a wonderful character. Same goes with Troy. He's just the most positive guy in the world. An incredible musician. Every time he enters the room, the room is filled with light and happiness and comedy. Yeah, he has definitely realized something thorough about life. Yeah, wonderful."
Tuomas added: "Floor is the best in the world in what she does. Really passionate about music, really understands the core of NIGHTWISH. And for me as a songwriter, that's such a relief because I know that whatever I do, whatever I want her to do, she's able to do. And a good example of this was when we recorded her vocals for this new album [the upcoming 'Yesterwynde']. We hadn't rehearsed once because we didn't have a chance. And we went to her home studio in Sweden. We had reserved two weeks for the recordings, and she was done in six days. Incredible, just incredible in what she does. Then Kai, too, again, the most amiable guy there is. I think he has like 25 guests on every single show we do and he doesn't know half of them. Yeah, everybody's his friend. So easy to be with. Pro musician, of course, obviously. What a drummer. But just fantastic guy. And same goes with Jukka. I mean, I've never, ever seen him angry or even agitated. He's just, like, 'Yeah, things will be okay. Let's talk about this.' And yeah, just a grounding personality. When you feel a bit agitated yourself, Jukka comes to you and you're, like, 'Oh, okay.' And a great bass player, of course. So lucky to be surrounded by these wonderful people. I really am."
NIGHTWISH's new album, "Yesterwynde", will be released on September 20 via Nuclear Blast. It marks the band's tenth studio LP, following on from the release of "Human. :II: Nature." in 2020.
In 2023, NIGHTWISH announced that the band wouldn't stage any tours in support of its then-unannounced tenth album. In a statement, Tuomas and his bandmates explained that "personal" reasons were the reason for the live hiatus and clarified that it had nothing to do with Jansen's then-pregnancy. The singer gave birth to her second daughter in October 2023.
In an interview with Metal Hammer last month, Holopainen said that NIGHTWISH still have no plans to tour after the release of "Yesterwynde".
"The reasons [for the live break] are personal," he said. "We're not going to go into it, but it was something that had to be done for this band to continue. There's no bad blood between the members, nothing like that. We just have to take a long breather."
The follow-up to 2015's "Endless Forms Most Beautiful", "Human. :II: Nature." was a double album containing nine tracks on the main CD and one long track, divided into eight chapters, on CD 2.
In August 2022, NIGHTWISH announced the addition of Koskinen as an official member of the band. Koskinen, who made his live debut with NIGHTWISH in May 2021 at the band's two interactive experiences, had spent the previous year touring with NIGHTWISH as a session musician.
In November 2022, Jansen revealed that she was "cancer free" after undergoing surgery to have a tumor removed following a breast cancer diagnosis.

A warm welcome to everyone who's discovering Paranatellonta after Worldcon 2024 in Glasgow, and to everyone who's been here for a long time and may be rediscovering this project now!
For a quick introduction, we are Fie and Minerva. Fie's photos have been inspiring Minerva's 10-sentence stories since August 2013. We were initially inspired to pick up this concept because we were admiring Erin Morgenstern and Carey Farrell's Flax-golden Tales.
The main page will lead you to the newest stories, the chronological page will show you where we started in 2013, and the random button will let the fates decide to which of our 380+ stories you'll be led. We cannot promise that all of them are equally amazing, but we do promise a new edition on every 1st and 15th day of the month. (Up until October 2017, we had one every week!) All of those editions can be accessed here for free.
(Of course we do ask you to mention our names and link to the original if you are telling your friends about this, and none of these materials can be used for generative AI learning or financial gain.)
Minerva was on the Worldcon 2024 panel "Flash Fiction: The Art of Storytelling in Under 1,000 Words", moderated by Stephen Granade, with Aimee Ogden, Istvan Vizvary, and @microsff as fellow panellists. The panel talked a little about experimental forms, so among the most recent Paranatellonta stories Minerva would recommend Edition 372 (Extract from "A Travel Guide to the Fairy Realm"), Edition 366 (story in poem format), and Edition 364 (dialogue) as examples of that. As our photographer has a cat, there are also quite a few cat pov stories to be found!
For those who want to find the flash piece Minerva recommended at the end of the panel, that was @avakellyfiction's claustrophobic love story "Silence, Entwined" from queer horror anthology Neon Horror.
Ava Kelly was also the guest photographer and writer for Paranatellonta's fifth and tenth anniversary. They are the author of the beautiful book Alia Terra: Stories from the Dragon Realm, illustrated by @mspencerdraws.
In case you're curious about reading longer work by Minerva, xyr queer fairy tale novella The Dragon of Ynys came out with Atthis Arts in 2020, and xyr website is the place to keep an eye on for news.
Among the flash fiction pieces recommended by the other panellists were The God of Arepo (Tumblr, 2018), The Night the River Meets the Sky (Fireside Fiction, 2022), and Good (Flash Fiction Online). An additional recommendation from the audience was Litany in the Heart of Exorcism (Flash Fiction Online).
We also recommend Small Wonders magazine, co-edited by Stephen Granade, for more SFF flash fiction and poetry.
Enjoy all these flashes of imagination! We hope you, too, will be inspired. Thank you for being here!

happy tenth birthday to fnaf! i don’t have art or anything to post so im just gonna talk ig
fnaf is probably my favorite franchise ever, it changed my life. it brought me a ton of joy when i first got into it in december 2018, first watching that video showing off all the ucn voice actors, to now in august 2024 as i look through the sneak peeks for the second movie and see people’s screenshots of the brand new into the pit game. it helped me through the pandemic, and through the following year of school that was terrifying to me (i miss the security breach release era).
from going to see the movie with my friends on opening night, to buying my first piece of merch at target, to casting hamilton with the animatronics back in the summer of 2020, all the amazing memories these games have brought me are forever gonna stick around.
i love five nights at freddy’s, and im glad to be here on its tenth anniversary :)

NIGHTWISH Begins Recording Tenth Studio Album
Tumblr media
NIGHTWISH has commenced recording its tenth studio album for a 2024 release.
On Sunday (August 6),the NIGHTWISH social media was updated with a photo of Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards) and Kai Hahto (drums) in the studio, along with the following message: "Recording album 10 is underway!"
Last December, Holopainen said the band's upcoming follow-up to 2020's "Human. :II: Nature." will be the third part of a trilogy that began with 2015's "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" album. He told Metal Hammer: "I immediately knew after getting that album ['Endless Forms Most Beautiful'] done that, 'Okay, we have to do more songs about this, because there's so much more to explore and tell the world. We're not done with this.' And the same thing happened after 'Human. :II: Nature.'; we're still not done. So let's do one more. At least one more.
"In a way, [the next album] is the third part of a trilogy, which started with 'Endless Forms…' and then 'Human. :II: Nature.' There are some major surprises there again, but it feels like a natural continuation to 'Human. :II: Nature.'"
According to Tuomas, NIGHTWISH's next LP will cover previously uncharted ground while continuing in the more cinematic style that has characterized some of the band's recent efforts..
"The wonderful thing is that we have had the demo [of the album] done since last spring. So it's been done for six months now. We really have all the time in the world to go through it all, and we have had a such great time with the band, just listening to the demo in our hotel rooms — me singing the lyrics and the melodies to Floor [Jansen, vocals]. She's recording them and then she's seeing them and throwing ideas to each other."

Fast X (also known as Fast & Furious 10) is a 2023 American action film directed by Louis Leterrier from a screenplay written by Dan Mazeau and Justin Lin, both of whom also co-wrote the story with Zach Dean. It is the sequel to F9 (2021), the tenth main installment, and the eleventh installment overall in the Fast & Furious franchise. It stars Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto alongside an ensemble cast including Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Scott Eastwood, Daniela Melchior, Alan Ritchson, Helen Mirren, Brie Larson, Rita Moreno, Jason Statham, Jason Momoa, and Charlize Theron. In the film, Toretto must protect his family from Dante Reyes (Momoa), who seeks revenge for his father's death and the loss of his family's fortune.
With a tenth film planned since 2014 and a two-part finale planned since October 2020, Lin was confirmed to return to direct with the main cast attached. The film's official title was revealed when principal photography began in April 2022. Lin left as director later that month citing creative differences, though he retained writing and producing credits. Leterrier was then hired as his replacement a week later and performed several uncredited rewrites to the screenplay. Longtime franchise composer Brian Tyler returned to score the film. With an estimated production budget of $340 million, Fast X would be the eighth-most expensive film ever made. Filming lasted until that August, taking place in London, Rome, Turin, other Italian cities, Lisbon, and Los Angeles.
Fast X premiered in Rome on May 12, 2023, and was released in the United States on May 19, by Universal Pictures. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for its action sequences and Momoa's performance but criticism towards the writing. The film grossed $714 million worldwide, becoming the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2023. A sequel is in development and scheduled to be released on April 4, 2025.

Due August 21: Chapter 9 Assessment and Intervention in the Balanced Literacy Classroom
Big takeaway: Balanced literacy in the classroom must include assessment because without it it is almost impossible to deliver instruction that is beneficial to our student's growth and is crucial so all students thrive even if it isn't right away and interventions are needed.
Nugget: "Instruction, intervention, and assessment are all linked. When a driver isn't making expected progress, she and her team adjust the plan and fix what isn't working well. There's no shame at all in that. That's a formula for winning" (Fisher,2020,p.202).
Experience: I decided to share an excerpt of text from this chapter with a past teacher whom I had in tenth grade for English and engage in conversation about their thoughts on the topic. Having this experience allowed me to engage more deeply with the course content because I could deepen my connection to others through shared text and also widen my perspective on a topic gaining new insights that I may have not thought of reading only through my lens. It opened up deep conversations and a way to flesh out new ideas that are present in the classroom and help solidify my views on them in a space that is comfortable with a fellow educator who has lived things that might shape their views and encourage me in facing this joining the teaching field. It also allowed me to see these ideas in practice from someone whom I trust and who has tried them out while seeing how it is also important to value the student and make them not feel ashamed for what they don't know in a safe and intentional way.

Edward Van Halen Iit the fire in the group that bears his name. Now his son is blazing his own trail as a solo artist. This is the story of Wolfgang Van Halen.
Born March 16th, 1991, named after the classical composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Wolfgang William Van Halen is the son of Eddie Van Halen and actress Valerie Bertinelli, and the nephew of Van Halen drummer Alex Van Halen. Eddie would name his instrumental "316" from Van Halen's 1991 album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge in honor of his son.
Tumblr media
Wolfie at just one hour old, held by Alex Van Halen
Wolfgang later stated he didn't know his father was a famous musician "until started picking up CDs and saw his picture on them."
Like his father and uncle Alex, Wolfgang became a multi- instrumentalist; He sings, plays bass, drums, guitar, keyboards and writes his own music. When Wolf was a child, he often watched Eddie rehearse, and at times would try to play Uncle Al's drum kit. Wolf started playing drums at the age of nine before his father gave him his own set of drums for his tenth birthday. Some time later he moved on to guitar and bass.
In late 2006, in an interview with Guitar World, Eddie confirmed that his son would replace Michael Anthony as Van Halen's bassist. Wolfgang first toured with Van Halen in his new capacity in 2007.
Tumblr media
Badass shirt, Wolfie!
Wolfgang made headlines in early 2008 by appearing on the cover of the April issue of Guitar World with his father, in the magazine's very first father-son issue. That same year, his father named a custom guitar after him, the Fender EVH Wolfgang.
In August 2010, Van Halen announced that they would record a new album, with Wolfgang playing bass. He recorded his only album with Van Halen, 'A Different Kind of Truth,' in 2011. The album was released on February 7, 2012.
On September 10,2012, Alter Bridge and Creed guitarist Mark Tremonti announced that Wolfgang would be filling in for Brian Marshall as bassist for the first tour of Tremonti's eponymous band. Tremonti's first album, 'All I Was', was released on July 17th of that year. Wolfgang became an official member of Tremonti in 2013, replacing Marshall. He appeared on the band's 2015 studio album 'Cauterize' and its 2016 follow-up 'Dust.'
In a February 2015 interview with the National Museum of American History, Eddie indicated that Wolfgang was working on a solo album. On June 9th, 2019, Wolfgang appeared as a guest on his mother's Food Network television show and announced that he had completed his solo album.
On October 6th, 2020 Wolfgang released a statement confirming his father Eddie had passed away after a long battle with cancer. "I can't believe I'm having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning. He was the best father could ever ask for. Every moment I've shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and don't think ever fully recover from this loss. I love you so much, Pop."
On February 11th, 2021, Wolfgang announced that his self-titled debut album under the name Mammoth WVH would be released on June 11th, 2021. The band name was Wolfgang's tribute to his dad who, along with his brother Alex, named their band Mammoth back in 1974 when singer David Lee Roth first joined.
On November 16th, 2020 Wolfgang released his debut single "Distance", a song he dedicated to his father. It debuted at #9 on Billboard's Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart on the week of Novenmber 28th. The single would reach #1 on the Bilboard Mainstream Rock Airplay chart by February of 2021.
The self-titled debut Mammoth WVH album reached #12 on the Billboard 200 while topping the US Independent Albums, US Top Hard Rock Albums and US Top Rock Albums charts. Topping the #1 US Mainstream Rock track chart with "Distance" was the single "Don't Back Down" while "Epiphany" would reach #9 on the same chart.
After the release of Mammoth WVH, Wolfgang put together a live lineup and has been touring consistently ever since. The current Mammoth WVH lineup is Wolfgang on guitar, keys, and lead vocals, guitarist Jon Jourdan, bassist Ronnie Ficarro, drummer Garrett Whitlock, and guitarist Frank Sidoris. The band will be part of Metallica's upcoming M72 Tour as special opener. The tour kicks off on April 27th in Amsterdam.
In September of 2022, Wolfgang made headlines with his appearance at two tribute concerts held in honor of Taylor Hawkins. He performed September 3rd and 27th in London and Los Angeles, respectively and brought fans to their feet with performances of the Van Halen songs "Hot For Teacher," "On Fire," and "Panama."
Earlier this month (3/11/23), Wolfgang told Total Guitar that the second Mammoth WVH album is "almost finished."

QUOTES
On Bass: "People always think that dad taught me how to play everything, but all he did was teach me a power cord on guitar and how to do a standard AC/DC style drum beat. From there, just listen to music and played along. always viewed bass as an "easier" version of guitar, but realized was totally wrong once started listening to people like Les Claypool and John Entwistle."
Tumblr media
On Getting Started Playing: "I started on drums when I was 10 years old, and then went to guitar when I was 12. I picked up the bass when I was 14 or 15. One day, Dad and Al were jamming up in the studio, and they asked if I wanted to play with them. A couple weeks went by, and it started to feel like something serious — more than just fun. We called Dave, and the rest just happened."
On 'A Different Kind of Truth': "Every time would go into the back room of the studio, I'd see walls of tapes with music that nobody's really heard. thought, people need to hear this, because dad wrote this music in the same headspace as songs like dance the night away and running with the devil. wanted to take some ideas out and rework them. think it was August 2009 and we did the first demo of "She's the Woman." When we did that, we realized this was really cool. From there, we wrote seven new songs, and reworked seven or so old demos. Reflecting on the simplicity of the older songs put us in that headspace to incorporate that into the newer songs Dad tends to write a lot of complicated things nowadays, so feel it brought him back to that time when he wrote those older songs. That's why I think the record sounds so "old" — in a good way."
On Naming Band Mammoth WVH: "I really like the Mammoth name, because think only super die-hard Van Halen fans are familiar with the name and think overall, most people don't really know the connection. So in a way, it's a subtle homage without kind of treading the same ground, if you will."
On His Debut Single "Distance": "That song was just kind of an expression of where was in the moment and imagining what...whenever the awful thing does happen what I'd feel like without him in my life and it turns out hit the nail on the head pretty much. When listen to the song after everything happened it had hit me in a completely different way. And that song wasn't done yet so it was like, think need to finish this and put it out for him as a tribute and have the proceeds go to his favorite charity [Mr. Holland's Opus] and it can be just like this last little gift for him."
FRANKEN-BASS
Tumblr media
Wolfgang uses a custom made bass guitar dubbed the "Franken-bass", based on Eddie's Frankenstrat guitar, including the striped design. Luthier Chip Ellis built two versions, one red like Eddie's guitar, and one blue as it is Wolfgang's favorite color. He uses the EVH 5150 III Amplifiers custom made for his father.

Revelations in Cambodia looting scandal name ‘scholar’ at Denver Art Museum Emma Bunker as accomplice to disgraced dealer Douglas Latchford
Cambodian farmers near the temple complex at Koh Ker knew that if they saw sculpted feet on a temple floor, it meant that looters had sawn off a statue at the ankles before shipping it abroad. Emma C. Bunker, a researcher with close ties to the trade, also knew that. In 2013, Sotheby’s repatriated a tenth-century footless statue that she advised them to auction. Most objects that she opined on sold without a problem.
Last August the Denver Art Museum (DAM), under pressure from the US government, returned four statues that were shown to have been looted from Cambodia. As many more works in its collection now come under suspicion, the role of Bunker, a donor and researcher who helped bring those objects to the museum, sheds new light on a notorious smuggling operation.
Those most recent revelations come from the Denver Post, which traced how the DAM became what Bradley Gordon, a lawyer representing Cambodia, called a “laundromat” for looted sculpture from Cambodia and Thailand. The involvement of Bunker, once a mostly-unnamed link, brings fresh scrutiny from law enforcement and embarrassment for the museum.
The DAM, a relatively small and modestly funded institution, was an improbable waystation in a network of dealers who bought sculptures illegally, shipped the works to Bangkok and beyond, and arranged museum exposure to enhance their value. Bunker often helped dealers falsify the works’ provenances, investigators say.
The museum’s Cambodian connection began with Douglas Latchford, the now-notorious English expatriate dealer who paid impoverished rural Cambodians to detach sections of in-situ sculptures for him to export and sell. Looters in his service told of payments that changed their lives. Latchford died in 2020 while under US indictment for fraud, smuggling and other crimes.
Latchford found a friend in Emma Bunker, who died in 2021, aged 90. Bunker wrote on Chinese and central Asian art, collaborating on three books with Latchford and travelling to sites in Cambodia and Thailand. Works in those books with bogus provenances brought high prices when Latchford sold them. Bunker was thanked publicly by trusting officials in Phnom Penh for her work on behalf of Cambodian culture. Researchers in Cambodia and Thailand now use the books to trace missing objects.
Latchford and Bunker’s provenances were also questioned by former looters who recalled pillaging sites as Khmer Rouge child soldiers and spoke of being paid by Latchford for objects.  ...

South Park is an American animated sitcom created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and developed by Brian Graden for Comedy Central. The series revolves around four boys—Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick—and their exploits in and around the titular Colorado town. South Park also features many recurring characters. The series became infamous for its profanity and dark, surreal humor that satirizes a large range of subject matter.
Parker and Stone developed South Park from two animated short films, both titled The Spirit of Christmas, released in 1992 and 1995. The second short became one of the first Internet viral videos, leading to the series' production. The pilot episode was produced using cutout animation; the remainder of the series uses computer animation recalling the prior technique. Since the fourth season, episodes are generally written and produced during the week preceding its broadcast, with Parker serving as the lead writer and director.
Since its debut on August 13, 1997, 328 episodes of South Park have been broadcast. It debuted with great success, consistently earning the highest ratings of any basic cable program. Subsequent ratings have varied, but it remains one of Comedy Central's longest-running programs. In August 2021, South Park was renewed through 2027, and a series of television specials was announced for Paramount+, the first two of which were released later that year.[2][3] In October 2019, it was announced that WarnerMedia acquired exclusive streaming rights to South Park starting in June 2020 for HBO Max.[4] The series' twenty-sixth season premiered on February 8, 2023.[5]
South Park has received critical acclaim, and is included in various publications' lists of the greatest television shows. It has received numerous accolades, including five Primetime Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award. A theatrical film, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, was released in June 1999 to commercial and critical success, garnering an Academy Award nomination. In 2013, TV Guide ranked South Park the tenth Greatest TV Cartoon of All Time.[6]

From horses to horsepower
By Jonathan Monfiletto
Tumblr media
The first time I ever set foot in Yates County – intentionally and knowingly, though I cannot think of a time when, or a reason why, I would have traveled through Yates County before then – was to attend a stock car race at what was then called Black Rock Speedway. At the time, I had a friend-of-a-friend who competed in a late model touring series, and the closest the series was appearing to where I lived at the time was Black Rock Speedway – the four-tenths-of-a-mile clay oval located on Route 14A just a stone’s throw from downtown Dundee.
So it was that I found myself hanging around the pit area and sitting in the grandstands at Black Rock, taking in not only my first race at this particular dirt track but also the prestigious Dutch Hoag National Open Weekend. Despite an event and a track surface that were hampered by rainy weather, I recall being impressed by both the action on the track and the uniqueness of the track itself compared to other dirt tracks I had visited. Even still at the track, I looked forward to my next visit for another race, although I’m chagrined to report that next time hasn’t come yet.
What is now known as Outlaw Speedway recently celebrated its 67th season opener, meaning the Dundee racetrack has hosted stock car racing continuously – except for the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, I presume – since the first time it did so in 1957. Perhaps the research I conducted, and the memories and moments I read about, in the course of putting together this article will inspire me to finally make my return visit to the speedway.
According to a September 2019 article in the Dundee Observer – when the Dundee Area Historical Society, up the street from the racetrack, hosted a program honoring the speedway’s history – what was originally called Dundee Speedway (and has been called at least four different names since) hosted its first stock car race in June 1957 with 1,000 fans in attendance. Penn Yan’s Glenn Reiners – who went on to become a legend at the speedway – won the inaugural 20-lap feature, besting a field of 14 cars. The track was located at the Dundee Fairgrounds, which had previously held horse races and continued to host horse racing, along with stock car racing, throughout the decades.
The first reference to Dundee Speedway that I can find in the Yates County History Center’s digitized newspaper collection is a May 1957 advertisement in the Observer, announcing the opening of the racetrack at the fairgrounds on May 31 and boasting 40 cars taking part in eight races (likely a main feature with a series of qualifying races leading up to it). On August 1, the Observer reported that 1,500 fans witnessed the first-ever championship race at the speedway, with Reiners once again coming out on top in a field of 20 cars. On August 16, the racetrack conducted a push car race for local youngsters and their homemade “hot rods,” as they had the chance to compete on the same track as their heroes. Horses and horsepower shared the slate of events for the Dundee Fair that year, and who else but Reiners won the stock car race held during the fair.
As the racetrack prepared for its second season in May 1958, the Observer reported the inaugural year of stock car racing had drawn the attention of several local enthusiasts, who built cars to compete in the races. With Reiners once again leading the point standings at the speedway, Dundee Speedway announced it would once again host a race for homemade push cars for a soap box derby and also hold a “powder puff” race for women driving local stock cars. Elmira’s Ethel Buchanan, whom the Observer described as “the top woman driver in this area,” was among the female competitors. Newspaper advertisements reveal some of the other special events held that year, such as a 50-lap mid-season championship race, motorcycle races, quarter midget races, late model races, and jalopy races. The speedway once again hosted its championship event during the Dundee Fair. Reiners won the race and the championship.
Ahead of the 1959 season, the Observer carried a profile on Reiners, Dundee Speedway’s two-time and only track champion. At the time, Reiners – who owned a repair shop and bulldozing business away from his auto racing pursuits – was also the track champion at Maple Grove Speedway in Waterloo the previous four seasons. For the coming season, the Yates Stock Car Racing Association – which leased the racetrack from the Dundee Fair Association – announced rule changes geared toward bringing in more competitors, increasing the limit on car models from those made in 1948 and before to those made in 1953 and before and allowing anyone with a valid driver’s license to compete in races, whereas the previous age limit was 21 and older. The rule changes didn’t slow down Reiners at all, as he seemed to either win the race or finish in the top three on the way to his third-straight championship in the speedway’s three years of competition.
However, Reiners seemed absent from competition at Dundee Speedway during the 1960 season. That opened the door for the likes of Hoot Gibson, George Schenck, and Dick Karlnoski to claim checkered flags in the races and a place atop the point standings. It is unclear from newspaper reports who won the track championship that year. Nevertheless, so went the first few years of Dundee Speedway’s existence, and so go the following years and decades of its history. At some point, the racetrack split its competitors into classes of sportsmen – older model cars – and late models – more modern cars. Later, modifieds were added to the slate. Stock car races continued to be a part of the Dundee Fair along with horse races and other competitive events. Stuntman Joie Chitwood also put on exhibitions at the speedway during the fair.
In September 1970, the speedway staged the Richard Karlnoski Memorial stock car race after Karlnoski, a Dundee man and speedway favorite – nicknamed The Flying Polack – died in a traffic crash. The proceeds from the event supported the Karlnoski family, and drivers also donated their prize money to the fund. Local businesses also contributed to the event, and drivers from the other area tracks at which Karlnoski competed – including Chemung, Addison, and Woodhull – joined the Dundee field for the event. It was expected the largest stock race ever held in the speedway’s history.
In March 1971, Dundee Speedway introduced snowmobile racing to its venue, and it continued to host motorcycle racing alongside its slate of stock car races as well. During the 1970s, the speedway also attracted racers from Drivers Independent Race Tracks (DIRT), a sanctioning body and racing series that began earlier in the decade. The speedway marked 1979 as the oldest club-owned racetrack in New York – under the auspices of what was then called the Dundee Stock Car Racing Association – and by joining forces with DIRT to sanction the late model division. Amid a gas crisis that saw a spike in prices both for racing fuel and regular gasoline, and many racetracks shutting down as a result, Dundee Speedway continued to attract 70-plus competitors each Friday night and a capacity crowd to cheer them on.
Entering a new decade, following a series of rainouts in 1979 and track improvements that left the association in debt, it appeared the speedway would close after 23 seasons. However, through off-season fundraisers and volunteer support, the speedway opened as scheduled in 1980. While the track continued operating, at some point its name changed. The Chronicle-Express of May 9, 1985, offers the earliest reference to Dundee Raceway Park that I could find. That appears to be when Steve Wetmore took over ownership and promotion of the speedway from the Dundee Stock Car Racing Association. The following season, the racetrack marked its 30th season and its fourth under sanctioning by DIRT.
Wetmore concluded his run at the helm of the speedway at the end of the 1994 season, as Lin and Cindy Hough, of Bath, and Sam Kelly and Margo Miller, of Dundee, took over the racetrack and renamed it Black Rock Speedway. Dean Hoag, the son of legendary dirt track racer Dutch Hoag, took over the speedway in 2005 but kept the name. Andrew Harpell leased the racetrack from Hoag in 2014 and called it Yates County Speedway, but Hoag regained control the following year and reverted the name to Black Rock Speedway. In 2016, Tyler Siri purchased the racetrack from Hoag and gave the speedway its current name, Outlaw Speedway.
The cars, the drivers, the track, and the times have changed since that first Friday night in 1957. What hasn’t changed is that for the last almost 70 years, the roar of stock cars can be heard from the Dundee racetrack on Friday nights from the late spring through the summer to the early fall.

NIGHTWISH's TROY DONOCKLEY On Band's Touring Hiatus: 'We Were In Danger Of Burning Out'
Tumblr media
In a new interview with Sakis Fragos of Rock Hard Greece, NIGHTWISH multi-instrumentalist Troy Donockley spoke about the band's announcement that it would take a break from touring and not hit the road in support of the band's just-released studio album "Yesterwynde". He said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH>NET): "Well, I was part of the decision, as we all were. We weren't forced into the conclusion, but we were pointed in the direction of it quite early on, even before the pandemic. We realized that we were in danger of burning out of doing too much. So we made the decision, and this hiatus, this time off, is for all of us. It has no time limit. We have absolutely no plans at all for when we will bring the band out again to play live."
He continued: "At the moment, we're just trying to, I suppose, personally, for all of us, recapture our balance, recapture, I suppose, our sense of direction for the band. It hasn't been easy — there's been lots of personal problems — but I must stress that we're an unusual beast, NIGHTWISH, in that we actually love being with each other. It's a rare thing for bands. A lot of bands, they'll have separate dressing rooms and all that kind of nonsense, whereas we actually enjoy our own company. And we socially mix with each other even when we're not working. We have fun with each other. Last year, Emppu [Vuorinen, NIGHTWISH guitarist] and Tuomas [Holopainen, NIGHTWISH keyboardist] came over to Yorkshire [England] and we went metal detecting for a week, just for the fun of it. Yeah, that's what we do. And have massive fun doing it."
Circling back to NIGHTWISH's decision to not play any live shows for the foreseeable future, Troy said: "So, it's not terminal. It's an extended time off. But I can envisage some more live work probably in 2027, which is the 30th anniversary of the band. I should imagine we'll do something live to mark that. We might do that."
When Fragos noted that NIGHTWISH's long album-tour cycles must have become more emotionally demanding as Troy and his bandmates kept doing it year after year, Donockley said: "That's a major part of it, but when you take that with six people, all of them feeling the same way, and you take it out on tour for seven weeks, or you travel to South America, three weeks in South America, then you're in Japan, then you're in America for five weeks. And we've all got families — all of us have families. Floor [Jansen, NIGHTWISH singer] has two tiny children. It's gonna cause confusion, with the lifestyle."
"Yesterwynde" was made available on September 20 via Nuclear Blast. It marks NIGHTWISH's tenth studio LP, following on from the release of "Human. :II: Nature." in 2020.
In August 2022, NIGHTWISH announced the addition of Jukka Koskinen (WINTERSUN) as an official member of the band.

Real Estate Credit Investments: Resilience of the NAV (LON:RECI)
Tumblr media
Real Estate Credit Investments Ltd (LON:RECI) is the topic of conversation when Hardman and Co’s Analyst Mark Thomas caught up with DirectorsTalk for an exclusive interview.
Q1: Your recent report on Real Estate Credit Investments sits behind a disclaimer, what can you tell us about that?
A1: It is just the standard disclaimer that many investment companies have. In essence, for regulatory reasons, there are some countries (like the US) where the report should not be read. It is not a simple asset class, and the report should only be looked at by professional/qualified investors.
Q2: Your recent report was called ‘Portfolio management to optimise risk/reward’, what can you tell us about it?
A2: In previous notes, we have reviewed why we believe the fund has procedures and practices in place that limit downside losses to help ensure the resilience of the NAV.
In this note, we explore further how portfolio management helps optimise risk/reward with a dynamic approach to bond portfolio allocation, leverage, top 10 concentrations, geographical sectors, and duration.
Their portfolio is not a static, long-duration, totally illiquid book. The key message that we believe investors should take away is that they are an actively managed portfolio where Cheyne’s footprint and average loan life of just 1.5 years allows them to rapidly take advantage of opportunities as they arise.
It is a balanced management with, for example, the overall level, and mix, of leverage reflecting Cheyne’s view of the risk/reward at any time.
In terms of what this brings to investors, we highlight that Company’s NAV performance was recognised in the recent Citywire award.
Q3: So, tell us a bit more about what has changed in the asset mix of portfolio?
A3: Since 2016, the book has been migrating towards an all-senior loan book. The move to senior debt has involved not only a shift from mezzanine and other loans but also, in 2023, a re-allocation away from bonds.
The chart in our report shows how this has progressed through the year with the gross value of bonds just over a tenth of that at the start of the year. The advantages of being senior debt include being repaid earlier in the event of customer difficulties, and retaining absolute governance, covenants and control from its bilateral singular lending relationships. The Cheyne-controlled weighted average LTV on total portfolio by commitment value is around 60%. These three factors mean that the loss in the event of default is reduced.
Our note also examines how Cheyne has changed the sector, geographical, and duration mix, as well as how the top exposures have changed over time.
Q4: And leverage in portfolio has changed too, what has happened there?
A4: The fund has used different types of leverage for different assets, with the market bond portfolio significantly funded by REPOS and the use of asset-specific finance with some loans.
There has been a sharp reduction in overall leverage throughout 2023, from 36.2% NAV in January to 20.9% in October. They have chosen to reduce leverage during more uncertain times, bearing in mind the pressure from the rise in cost of funds (balance sheet leverage average cost up 2.7% on January 2023). Lower leverage in uncertain times is not a one-off and has been seen before (end-2018 balance sheet leverage 38.1% NAV reduced to 21.6% end-2020).
Secondly, the mix has changed with the increasing prevalence of asset-specific finance, which, typically, is longer term but whose cost has increased less than short-term REPOS.
Q5: What was the award it recently won?
A5: Real Estate Credit Investments won the best performance award for Specialist Debt at Citywire’s London-listed Investment Companies awards in November 2023. The award is given to the investment companies judged to have delivered the best underlying return, in terms of growth in NAV, in the three years to 31 August 2023.
Q6: And the risks?
A6: The risks of a recession are clear to see, with higher interest rates, lower disposable income, falling property prices (both residential and commercial, compounded by distressed sellers of assets), rising social tensions, governments facing large fiscal deficits and central banks’ inflationary pressures.
