kyle maclachlan did not want the cooper/audrey relationship dropped because he actually cared about the age gap. he wanted it dropped because he was dating lara flynn boyle at the time and she was jealous of the chemistry he had with sherilyn fenn and didn't want them to have any scenes together anymore. if he had actually cared then annie wouldn't be just a year and a half older than audrey and twice as naive. i love kyle but he was in a relationship with a younger woman himself at the time. this was just the more marketable answer than saying there was drama with the cast behind the scenes.
