When the first Audi TT debuted in 1998, based on a concept car from 1994, it was seen as a paradigm shift in vehicle design. This watershed moment came not only from the TT’s groundbreaking exterior shape and proportions, but for its comprehensive attention to interior design details that echoed the car’s exterior themes. The TT was by no means Audi’s first triumph of design, but in the two decades since that TT concept’s debut the brand has been on an unrivaled design winning streak.
Marc Lichte, the Head of Audi Design, sees a bright future for bold, beautiful EVs
You won’t find a single individual behind 25 years of Audi’s design dominance, though the brand’s current head of design, Marc Lichte, did join the VW group in 1996, halfway between the TT’s transition from concept car to production car. As a young VW designer he likely had little to do with that first-gen TT, though he did oversee designs for the VW Golf, Passt, Touareg and Arteon before becoming Head of Audi Design in 2014. With an 18-year history at VW prior to joining Audi, Lichte had a front-row seat to the luxury brand’s design achievements. And Audi’s continued success, both aesthetically and financially, confirms Lichte was up to the challenge of maintaining Audi’s streak.
The next 25 years of design, for both Audi and the entire automotive industry, will be even more challenging. The introduction of increasingly advanced driver-assist systems, the expanding role of connected car technology, and, most importantly, the imminent transition from internal combustion to electric powertrains, will challenge every aspect of vehicle development, including design.
The basics of compelling vehicle design are supported by electric vehicle drivetrains
We recently spoke to Marc Lichte about Audi’s future product plans and how they’ll reflect the next-generation of Audi vehicles. He told us the foundation for beautiful vehicle design starts with the proportions, and that the nature of electric vehicles supports excellent proportions. Key elements include large wheels, short overhangs, a low hood and a slim, low roofline over a muscular body. Electric vehicles, with no engine and a low-mounted battery pack, support all of these elements, as reflected in Audi’s newest EV, the e-tron GT.
For this reason Lichte is confident the next-generation of Audi’s EVs will be the most attractive cars the brand has ever offered. In fact, the sleek, expressive design of the new e-tron GT production car is nearly identical to the concept vehicle that preceded it because the EV drivetrain allowed the concept car’s dramatic design cues to work on the full production model. And, like the Audi TT, Lichte assured us the interior design of the e-tron GT will be just as dramatic as its exterior.

Lichte told us another benefit of an EV’s more compact powertrain is an increase in cabin space without growing the exterior dimensions. This means even a low slung four-door coupe like the e-tron GT (its roof is 2.75 inches lower than an Audi A7) can offer expansive interior space and comfort for four adults. That kind of space efficiency likely won’t end the rush to SUVs, but it will ensure a healthy balance between form and function for Audi buyers seeking utility from their sporty sedans. It was this balance of sporty design and capable performance (remember, EVs and their instant torque are notoriously quick) that lead to the “GT” component of the e-tron GT’s name, despite its four doors and four-passenger capacity.

Lichte told us the e-tron GT is the first in a series of near-term future Audi electric vehicles, all of which will maximize the design freedom that comes with an EV powertrain. 2020 Audi RS 7 Sportback First Look Review: Because Not Everyone Wants a Wagon
The news Audi is finally bringing the RS 6 Avant superwagon to America might be grabbing the headlines, but that’s not the only RS action heading our way. The RS 7 Sportback returns for 2020 with more power, more performance, and an edgier new look.
The 2020 RS 7 Sportback shares its mild hybrid 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 with the freshly redesigned RS 6 Avant. With 591 hp and 590 lb-ft, it delivers 40 hp and 74 lb-ft more than the previous RS 7’s powertrain, which has helped shave 0.3 second from the 0–60 acceleration time. Ordering the optional Dynamic package boosts top speed from an electronically limited 155 mph to 174 mph. The Dynamic Plus package option ups the car’s Vmax to a seriously fast 190 mph.
Performance is up, but so is efficiency. The mild hybrid system’s belt alternator starter can recover up to 12 kW under gentle acceleration and feed it into a lithium-ion battery. If the driver releases the accelerator between 35 and 100 mph, the powertrain management system will either recover more energy or coast with the engine switched off, depending on driving conditions and the battery’s state of charge. In higher gears, at low to medium loads and engine speeds, the engine management system will also deactivate cylinders two, three, five, and eight to further reduce fuel consumption.
The RS 7 Sportback also gets the same chassis upgrades as its wagon brother, including the choice of two suspension systems, optional rear-wheel steering, and optional carbon-ceramic brakes.
The base RS 7 suspension features air springs and electronically controlled shocks, and it’s 50 percent stiffer than the regular A7 setup. In Normal mode, the RS 7 Sportback rides 0.8 inch lower than the regular A7 and snuggles an additional 0.4 inch closer to the tarmac at speeds above 75 mph. The optional RS sport suspension with Dynamic Ride Control uses steel springs and cross-linked electronically controlled shocks that more closely control roll and pitch, and it’s 30 percent stiffer than the RS 7 air suspension in Normal mode
Rear-wheel steering, available with Dynamic package and Dynamic Plus package options, uses yaw and speed data to determine how much steering is needed at both front and rear axles. The rear wheels can be steered up to 5 degrees, counter steering at speeds up to about 60 mph to increase turn-in response and steering with the front wheels at higher speeds to improve stability.
Standard brakes are steel, with 16.5-inch rotors up front and 14.6-inch items at the rear. The optional carbon-ceramic rotors are the same size at the rear but 17.3 inches at the front, where they are clamped by massive 10-piston calipers. The carbon-ceramic setup not only ensures superior brake performance at high speed but also reduces unsprung weight by a substantial 75 pounds. As with the RS 6 Avant, standard wheels are now 21 inches, with 22-inchers optional. The designs of the RS 7 wheels are different from those used on the wagon, however.
Sportback is Audi-speak for hatchback, a body style that’s not popular in the US. But Audi Sport product manager Michael Binder believes the RS 7’s low, sweeping roofline gives it unique visual appeal and versatility. “It has the same passenger capacity as a sedan,” he says, noting that a three-passenger rear seat is now available as an option, “but it looks sporty, almost like a grand turismo.” A grand turismo you can take to Ikea: The luggage capacity expands from 18.9 cubic feet to 49.1 with the split rear seat backs folded flat, and an optional convenience key allows the rear hatch to be opened by foot gesture control.
In visual terms, the 2020 RS 7 Sportback has been given the same aggressive makeover as the RS 6 Avant, with the same scowling front fascia and low-lipped hood. Other changes include a new side sill with inlay, and diffuser-style element that runs across the lower edge of the rear fascia and arches prominently over exhaust outlets. And, like the RS 6 Avant, the RS 7 Sportback is also now a unique-to-RS wide-body car, with unique front fenders, bodyside stampings, and rear door skins that tease the sheetmetal 0.8 inch farther out each side than the regular A7.
Inside are RS sport seats upholstered in leather with a rhombus pattern and RS embossing. A flat-bottomed RS sport steering wheel with larger shift paddles features several multifunction buttons, including the RS mode button, which enables the new Drive Select RS 1 and RS 2 modes. In addition to short-cutting to preselected customizable powertrain and dynamic settings, it automatically opens the RS-specific displays in the Audi Virtual Cockpit, including tire pressure, power, torque, oil temperature, boost pressure, lap times, acceleration and g-forces.
The 2020 RS 7 Sportback is expected to arrive in U.S. Audi dealerships in the second quarter of next year.

Hell, it’ll even get a diesel option. Wranglers are a bit clumsy in the handling department, so expectations for the driving experience will be low; the Gladiator is unlikely to disappoint. I think we can say that this new Jeep pickup has been well worth the wait. It all boils down to what Rivian expects to realistically do in the market. Overnight charging at home is enabled by the onboard 9.6-kW charger when using a 240-volt 40-amp Level 2 charger. Audi has teamed with Amazon Home Services to simplify the process of ordering and setting up a home charger, and of course after it’s set up the myAudi app eases management of charging and preconditioning the vehicle. And although it’s not quite free Supercharging for life like you can get with a Tesla, new E-Trons will come with a pre-purchase of 1,000 kW-hr of charging at Electrify America charging stations.
For now Audi is remaining tight-lipped about U.S.-spec power, torque, and curb weight, and the EPA hasn’t completed testing for the final range specs (that 248-mile estimate is from the similar Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure). In Euro trim the front and rear motors combine to produce 355 hp and 487 lb-ft in general driving, with “boost” power of 402 hp available in Sport mode when you engage the accelerator’s kickdown switch. Audi says that’ll produce a 0–60 run in 5.5 seconds en route to an electronically limited top speed of 124 mph. And like Tesla, but not Jaguar, Audi is rating the E-Tron to tow 4,000 pounds.
In normal acceleration, this first ever electric Quattro system routes power first to the rear motor, engaging the front one predictively as conditions demand. The motors are of the asynchronous type rather than permanent-magnet type, so there’s no magnetic drag torque when coasting (as the front axle usually does). The motors also earned a few patents for an innovative cooling system that routes coolant from the power-control module to the spinning rotor (a trick that requires fancy water bearings) and finally to the stationary stator. Both motors contribute to regenerative braking, which is offered at three levels, selectable via steering wheel paddles. Presuming there’s room for the energy in the battery, they can provide up to 0.3 g of braking by regen alone, after which an electrically boosted integrated brake controller blends in as much friction braking as required. Single-speed 8.4:1 reduction transaxles are used on both axles, with brake-based virtual torque vectoring at the rear. (A three-motor setup with honest-to-goodness torque vectoring has been rumored for a possible S or RS variant.)
Audi claims that by centralizing control of the traction, stability, braking, electric motors, and standard height-adjustable air suspension with variable damping into a single master controller, the E-Tron will deliver new levels of traction, stability, and handling. The system even incorporates the navigation and camera views to predictively advise the driver when to lift of the accelerator for optimum efficiency. Oh, and the standard Audi Drive Select program now offers seven profiles, including off-road settings that can raise the body ride height by 1.4–2.0 inches above standard ride height.
Style-wise the E-Tron looks way tamer and more mainstream than the I-Pace, EQC, or Model X. The designers sought to telegraph its electric-ness with little cues like horizontal elements in the daytime running lights and taillamp designs that mimic battery-charge status icons. Black inserts on the door trim telegraph the battery location as the center of power in much the same way that hood bulges are used to the accentuate powerful combustion engines within. Meanwhile, its Quattro-ness is telegraphed via blisters over the wheels. Inside, the seat upholstery is sewn to look like printed circuits. The Prestige trim adds $7,000 for a head-up display, Valcona leather, massaging seats, and the full driver-assistance package. A First Edition model tops the lineup at $87,695 with night-vision assistance and a color and trim package that gets Daytona Gray pearl paint, 21-inch black wheels, orange calipers, black leather with gray piping, and gray ash wood trim. Oh, and those prices are before the federal tax credits that Audis still qualify for.
Taking a page from EV guru Elon Musk, the E-Tron can be reserved with a fully refundable $1,000 deposit toward deliveries, which will start in the second quarter of 2019. Audi claims 10,000 folks have placed orders in Europe already—none of whom will spend years waiting for delivery.
