Chapter Two
(Prev//Next) (@starillusion13 @yizhou-time @hannahdinse8)
Prompt: You were a princess in name alone. Unable to perform any of the duties that come with the title. It seemed to be your destiny to live a quiet life. That is until you met someone who refused to see you silenced. Perhaps your fate was wrong all along.
A/N: A second chapter so soon, to properly set up the story...
âThat insolent little girl!â
Yunho was heading to his library one morning when he heard his motherâs voice. It didnât sound good, and soon enough he saw his mother with her entourage storming in a familiar direction. Yunho quickly moved to intervene, stopping his mother in her tracks.
âMother, whatâs wrong? Itâs far too early in the day for you to be upset like this.â
âThe princess is being difficult this morning. Sheâs refusing to take her medicine.â The Queen sighed. âThis is a first for her, but unacceptable nonetheless.â
âMother, take a deep breath. I will go speak to my sister and take care of this, alright?â
âNo, I should do it myself. You shouldnât be bothered with such trivial matters.â
âItâs alright, mother. I havenât paid her a visit in a while, so this is the perfect opportunity. Consider the matter resolved.â
âAlright, but do let me know if she causes trouble.â
âOf course, mother.â
Yunho bowed before making his way to his sisterâs quarters. He stood outside for a moment. It really had been a while since he last came to visit. In that time things had changed, but at the center of it all the princess was still his younger sister. His arrival was announced and he entered to find a rather unique sight before him. You were lying in bed, hidden under the covers, your breakfast untouched, as was the medicine on your table. Yunho carefully moved it all aside, kneeling next to you and gently pulling back the covers. He could see you were actually fully dressed, and your eyes were red and puffy from crying.
âY/n, what happened? Whatâs going on?â
âItâs nothingâŠâ
âI donât believe that.â
Yunho pulled you up, but he could soon see that you were avoiding his gaze. You looked awful, and he had to know why. This need to make things better for you was rooted deep inside him, and heâs had it all his life.
âMother was on her way here when she heard you were refusing to take your medicine, why is that?â
âI donât want it⊠thereâs no pointâŠâ
âWhat are you talking about? I know I havenât seen you much lately butâŠâ
The situation suddenly dawned on Yunho. Your room was untouched despite you being present, bits of dust starting to build up. Not to mention your clothes werenât just from this morning, but the smell they gave off revealed you hadnât changed for at least a day. Bits of your actual scent were seeping through and he had to calm himself. Now that he was really getting a good look at you he could see just how dreadful you truly looked. Yunho reached up to grab your chin, gently encouraging you to meet his gaze. Despite being familiar with your eyes, he could clearly notice the lack of a spark in them now.
âY/n, what is going on here?â
âIâm-â
âDo not lie to me⊠please.â
â⊠Iâm not hungry⊠thatâs all⊠and I-â
âY/n.â
You closed your eyes, unable to face Yunho. âThe Queen has forbidden me from leaving my quarters unless summoned⊠since Iâm not allowed to leave⊠I see no reason in bothering with food⊠or my medicine⊠Iâm very much dead to the world⊠things would be better off if I truly wasâŠâ
âThat is enough. Do not talk like that.â
âYunho, just go.â You pleaded, opening your eyes. âYou have more important things to worry about right now.â
âDo you think youâre not important to me? Youâre my sister, youâre my responsibility.â
âIâm just a burden to everyone in the palace. Youâd surely be studying right now if not for me⊠Iâm sorryâŠâ
âYou have nothing to apologize for. Iâll speak with mother about-â
âDonât!â You grabbed Yunhoâs hand. âNot a word about this to the Queen.â
âY/n-â
âYouâll make things worse⊠Yunho, pleaseâŠâ
âThereâs no reason for you to be locked up here.â
âYes there is⊠I keep causing trouble⊠and the last thing I should be is a concern of yours⊠youâre going to be king someday soon, you need to focus on thatâŠâ
âHow could I possibly do that knowing my sister is unhappy and not looking after herself? Hm?â
âI⊠Iâm sorryâŠâ
âStop apologizing. If you really want me to stop worrying about you, I need to know youâre okay.â
Yunho brought over your breakfast, grabbing the utensils and holding out some food for you. He gestured for you to eat, and after a moment you caved. He fed you until everything was gone, bringing over your medicine.
âYou told me you wanted to live long enough to see me marry and become king, and I want you to live much longer than that. Neither of us can keep our word if you donât take your medicine and look after your health. So please, drink.â
You met Yunhoâs gaze for a moment before taking the medicine. A familiar bitter taste landed on your tongue, but you drank every last drop. Yunho reached over to pet your head, happy to see you doing the right thing.
âYouâre not gonna cause any more trouble are you?â
âNo! No, not-â
Yunho quickly realized his poor choice of words, placing his hands on your shoulders and hushing you, offering you a smile.
âI meant, you wonât make me worry again, right? Youâll eat and take your medicine, promise?â
âI promise.â You stated. âJust⊠please donât question the Queen about my situation⊠I have plenty to do in my quarters⊠Iâll be fine⊠and I wonât worry you anymoreâŠâ
âY/n-â
âPlease⊠I donât want to be a burden to youâŠâ
Yunho sighed. âYouâre not a burden, and I shall let this go for now. Iâll come see you again later today.â
âThank you. Iâll await your visit then.â
Yunho felt better about the whole situation, petting your head one last time before getting up. Although he lingered for a moment longer.
âY/n.â
âYes?â
âWhen Iâm king⊠things will be different⊠I promise.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âHave some faith, and trust me.â
âI always trust you.â
âThank you.â
âŠâŠâ„âŠâŠ
You honestly felt awful for having worried your brother. You should have known word would spread to him eventually, and he would surely come by to see you. Making him worry about you really was the last thing you wanted to do, so that meant you had to get up. You had to live properly in order for him to focus on the important things. You couldnât be a reason why he struggled to be king.Â
For the last few days you had just been rotting away in bed. Slowly losing your appetite, but it was rather amusing it all came back to you with a simple visit from your brother. You opened up your window, letting the sunlight and fresh air in. The day was a bit gloomy, but you couldnât let your emotions mimic it. After cleaning up and getting dressed you stepped out into your little garden, along with some paper and paints. It would have been nice if the sun was out, but it was better to take things slow.Â
Just because this place was your prison, it didnât mean you had to be a prisoner. You still had some freedom and Yunhoâs words really ignited something inside of you. Despite being the Crown Prince you knew he was still at the mercy of the King and Queen, so he couldnât do much for you. Yet he expressed to you his desire for change and that was enough to give you hope. So you told yourself to do your best and live well, for his sake.
âŠâŠâ„âŠâŠ
âJongho.â
âYes, your highness?â
âAsk Yeosang to stop by princessâ quarters today. I want him to examine her to make sure sheâs alright. Then find out why sheâs locked up. This is ridiculous, even by mothersâ standards.â
âOf course, your highness.â
After visiting his sister, Yunho continued to his original destination. When he wasnât in his own quarters, he moved around the palace only with his royal guard, Mingi, and his long time scholar friend, Jongho. He didnât need anyone else, especially now that he would be spending most of his time in his library. Although Yunho had found himself struggling to study. He wasnât entirely sure what he would learn from the books in his secret library, but what he had discovered so far was disheartening. His father wanted him to remain silent on the matter and truly think things over. The longer that went on the worse he felt.
It was clear many generations have kept this secret, and they all surely had good reason to. Then again, this particular secret didnât affect them, it affected him. His father had made his choice and would defend it to the end. Now all Yunho could do was consider why, and try to understand. He wanted change, but he couldnât just do things impulsively. He had to see the bigger picture and keep in mind what was best for the nation. This frustrated Yunho to no end, making him feel like he was already failing as a king.
âYour highness.âÂ
Yunho heard Jongho call for him from the library entrance. He made his way out of his secret room, shutting the door behind him and meeting up with his friend.
âBack already?â
âYes, your highness. Yeosang assured me he would stop by to see the princess before dinner.â
âAnd the other matter?â
âI spoke with some of the court ladies, and the whole situation seems to be the topic of conversation among them and others in the palace.â
âWhat happened?â
âYou know the Queen does not favor the princess, and would rather she remain hidden. Unfortunately a new lord in the palace, unaware of such things, approached the princess on more than one occasion. When the Queen heard about this she reprimanded the princess and ultimately confined her to her quarters.â
âAll because a lord spoke to her?â
Yunho remembered hearing about a lord approaching his sister. He thought it was a joyous thing, not realizing youâd suffer for something out of your hands. Now he understood your reluctance to talk about the incident. This was upsetting news, but he had already promised you that he would not bring this up with mother. The idea of you being locked up in your quarters over something so trivial was cruelly unfair, but he couldnât do anything about it. At least for now. He could probably find a way to change things if he set his mind to it.
âWho was the lord that approached my sister?â
âLord Park Seonghwa.â
âPark Seonghwa⊠the name sounds familiar.â
âHe is the son of Minister Park. He has returned to the palace to study under his father, likely to one day take his place.â
âHm, I suppose we should become acquainted. Would you know where he is at the moment?â
âMany new palace officials attend lectures, itâs likely he will be there.â
âLetâs go. I should make a visit as the Crown Prince.â
âYes, your highness.â
Yunho had vague memories of meeting Seonghwa back when they were children. Considering he was Minister Parkâs son he thought the two would become friends and grow up together, but instead the boy was sent away to study elsewhere. He had to admit he was a bit upset Seonghwa hadnât made an effort to see him first. Perhaps he was too busy with classes, or didnât think the two knew each other well enough for such things. Then again Seonghwa had made time to see his sister. Although that was a little more understandable.
Upon arriving at the class area Yunho remained silent as he watched, not wanting to interrupt. He scanned the crowd, seeing all these new faces, but even with many years passing Yunho could still recognize one. When the class ended everyone was dismissed, and Yunho approached Lord Park. He called out his title, getting the young officialsâ attention, along with the other next to him, likely a friend. Before Yunho could properly introduce himself the two bowed. His attire did speak for itself.
âYour highness, itâs an honor to meet you. Iâm Park Seonghwa, and this is my friend, Choi San.â
âItâs been a long time, Seonghwa. Itâs nice to see you again.â
âLikewise, youâve become a great Crown Prince, and I believe youâll be an even greater King.â
âI would hope so. My associates told me you had returned to the palace a few days ago. If I had known I would have welcomed you sooner.â
âIâm the one who should be apologizing. It would have been better for me to seek you out, but I found it difficult to find an appropriate time. You shouldnât have gone out of your way to greet me, I would have figured out a way to you eventually.â
âIâm sure you would. At least you found time to see my sister.â
âThe princess, yes. She was very shy and quiet, I hope I didnât frighten her.â
âSheâs alright. Thereâs no need to worry.â
âGood. Although I havenât seen her around as of late.â
âSheâs busy with her own things.â Yunho smiled. âI have somethings to get back to, but I hope weâll see more of each other.â
âIâm sure we will.â
With that said Yunho excused himself, wishing Seonghwa and his friend well with their studies. It was nearing the lunch hour so he needed to get back to his library before his court ladies came by and saw he wasnât there.
âDo you intend to become friends with Lord Park?â Jongho questioned.
âGiven who our fathers are, itâs likely weâll be working together in the future. Itâs best we get to know each other now before we find ourselves dealing with a serious matter. Besides, I always thought weâd be friends. Thereâs no reason why we canât now.â
âI see.â
âAre you worried? Or perhaps jealous?â
âOne more person to accompany you doesnât sound like a bad idea.â
âI suppose youâre right.â
âŠâŠâ„âŠâŠ
âI had no idea you knew the Crown Prince.â
âMy father is Minister Park. As you can imagine the Parkâs have always been close to the royal Jeong family.â
âYeah. No wonder you approached the princess.â
âWhat is that supposed to mean?â
âDo you not know?â
âKnow what?â
âThe unspoken rule. Everyone who works in the palace knows of it.â
âWell Iâve been more focused on my studies than gossip. Now, what are you talking about?â
âNo one is supposed to approach the princess. They say sheâs sick but the Queen doesnât like her and doesnât want anyone drawing attention to her. The princess doesnât even socialize with others. She always stays in her quarters. Except for her walks of course.â
âShe hasnât been on those walks in a while nowâŠâ
âHuh?â
âWhere did you hear all this?â
âItâs just information that goes around among the people of the palace. Everyone knows, from the court ladies and eunuchs, to the guards and scholars, even the officials know of this.â
âHmâŠâ
âWhat is it?â
âNothing.â
Seonghwa really had no idea about this supposed rule, but he already didnât like it. He never knew you when you were a kid, but he didnât recall you ever being ill. All this new information intrigued him, and he wanted to know more. He parted ways with San after class, meeting up with Hongjoong, his personal guard. The two had met as children, but were separated when Seonghwa was sent away. Ever since he was set to return to the palace he was reunited with his old friend, being told the two would remain together going forward. Seonghwa didnât see the need for a personal guard, but he understood his fathersâ concerns over his safety. If anything, he saw Hongjoong as a friend to keep him company rather than a guard.
âDid you know about the unspoken rule regarding the princess?â
âYes.â
âWhy didnât you tell me anything when I approached her?â
âYou did not know of her identity the first time, so I believed it to be an honest mistake.â
âI knew who she was, Hongjoong, but that doesnât explain why you said nothing about the matter the second time.â
âWell, considering who your father is, I thought such a thing might not apply to you.â Hongjoong explained. âApologies. I should have confirmed such things with you first before making assumptions.â
âHm⊠do you know where she is? I havenât seen her in quite a while.â
âIâm afraid I donât know about the princessâ whereabouts. Besides the unspoken rule, not much else is said about her.â
âThen I suppose I should ask around myself.â
âWhat?â
âLetâs go speak to some of the court ladies.â
âLord Park, you canât just-â
âIâve told you itâs alright to call me Seonghwa, Lord Park is too formal for us.â
âI still work under your father, itâs my job-â
âYou should work for me directly, donât you think?â
âIâŠâ
âCome on, weâre wasting daylight.â
Seonghwa began walking and Hongjoong was soon to follow. He really did consider the lord his friend, but while in the palace he wasnât so sure he could act as anything but his trusted guard. The two made their way over to where the court ladies gathered. Of course they drew attention, not necessarily cause they stood out, but because of their good looks. Seonghwa was well aware he had a beautiful face, one he could use to his advantage. He smiled at the ladies and approached, making a few a bit flustered.
âGood afternoon, I hope Iâm not bothering you.â
âOf course not, how can we help you?â
âI was curious about something, and I figured you lovely ladies could assist me with it.â
âWe will do our best.â
âI appreciate that. You see Iâm still new to the palace but Iâve heard this rumor, and Iâm not so sure about it.â
âMany rumors go around the palace. Which one are you referring to?â
âIâve been told to stay away from the princess. That no one should be interacting with her, and she should be left alone.â
âAh, that one. Yes, itâs true. The princess has poor health, so itâs best to keep your distance.â
âI see, although I donât really know how to distinguish her from any other beautiful lady in the palace.â
âThat wonât be a problem though as she is confined to her quarters indefinitely.â
âPardon?â
The lady gestured for Seonghwa to come closer, intending to whisper something into his ear. Seonghwa smiled and complied, leaning in.
âThe truth is the Queen doesnât favor the princess. When some lord spoke to her a few days ago the Queen got upset and locked her up. So you donât have to worry about running into her. Iâll be sure to let you know if things change, but thatâs highly unlikely.â
âAh, I see.â Seonghwa stepped away. âWell, at least the princess has her court ladies to keep her company.â
âThey only attend to her for daily duties, other than that the princess is alone all day.â
âInteresting. Thank you for the information.â
âOf course. Please let us know if we can help you with anything else.â
âI will keep that in mind.â
Seonghwa excused himself, heading back the way he came and Hongjoong coming to his side. The lord was lost in thought, and Hongjoong could see the gears turning.
âYou seem bothered by the information given to you.â
âI am. The princess of this nation is left alone without anyone to care for her, does that sound right? Sheâs being punished for no reason.â
âYouâre forgetting about the situation here, Seonghwa.â
âWhat situation?â
âYouâve lived outside the palace for years, have you ever heard anyone speak of the princess?â
âWhat do youâŠâ
As Seonghwa thought things over he began to see what Hongjoong meant. He knew of the princess because of his family, but outside the palace it was a different story. Many people would speak of the King, praising him or criticizing him. The same could be said of the Queen. Her elegance and beauty known all over. Most spoke of the Crown Prince in high regard, looking forward to the things he would do once he ascended the throne. Although not once, not even a whisper, was anything ever said about the princess. The people did not know one existed, and even in the palace walls she was a ghost. Forsaken by those who knew her face and name.
âSo the princess is ill, and kept away from everyone for her own health. Thatâs the surface level reason, but everyone knows the truth. The Queen doesnât care for her own child, and everyone follows suit. That is still no excuse for any of this.â
âThings are different in the palace, Seonghwa. You of all people understand the history of the royal family. For the princess to be ill, itâs shameful.â
âOnly because they make it out to be that way. Who says she isnât strong? How can she be strong when she has no one to support her? Sheâs alone in the most dangerous place on Earth.â
âThe Crown Prince does tend to her, although not as often now given his studies for the throne and upcoming marriage.â
âPrecisely. Tell me, does the princess have guards watching over her quarters?â
âNo. Sheâs not a flight risk, nor a target for anyone. Why?â
âI need to pay her a visit.â
âLord Park!â
âI told you to call me Seonghwa.â
âI forbid you from going anywhere near the princess! Youâve caused her enough trouble as is.â
âExactly! This is my fault, the least I can do is apologize to her. Properly.â
âLord-â
âSeonghwa. Call me Lord Park again and I really will start treating you as my guard.â
âIâm supposed to protect you in this dangerous place. Your father entrusted me with your care. If you go near the princess and get caught-â
âI wonât. If I get caught sheâll suffer greater consequences than me. I just donât want her hating me over an honest mistake.â
âThen write her a letter. Ask one of her court ladies to give it to her.â
âNo, an apology like this needs to be done in person. Iâll visit her tonight.â
âTonight? Are you intending to-â
âYou be my look out. I promise I wonât take long.â
âSeonghwa, you canât be serious!â
âI am. So be ready.â
âŠâŠâ„âŠâŠ
You spent your whole day out in your garden, passing the time by painting. Youâd focus on certain flowers and paint them as best you could. Your lunch was served to you out there, and you shared a few pieces with a bunny that had been around. It wasnât until late in the evening that you had a guest. One you had been expecting since morning.
âHello, princess.â
âDoctor Yeosang, what a surprise. I figured my brother would send you eventually.â
âWhat makes you say that?â
âYouâve already been by for my weekly check-up, and my brother was here earlier worrying about me. Itâs only natural heâd send you.â You offered a smile. âIâm fine though.â
âIf youâre so certain then I can do a quick examination and be on my way.â
âSure.â
Yeosang settled down next to you in the garden, holding your attention for a moment while he went about his usual duties.
âYou shouldnât skip meals. Or your medicine.â
âI know. It was foolish to throw a tantrum at my age.â
âPerhaps, but I understand why you did it. This is unfair but you shouldnât do something that only hurts you.â
âEven if that was my intention⊠my brother was still affected by my actions. I didnât want to cause him trouble and yet here I am doing exactly that.â
âYou know he doesnât see you as troublesome.â
âBut I certainly can be at times. Especially when I donât think about how my actions affect othersâŠâ
âI doubt heâs mad at you for any of this. So donât beat yourself up over it either. Itâs in the past, and Iâm sure youâll do better going forward.â
âIâll certainly do my best.â
âThatâs the attitude you should have.â
âMy ears are burning, so you two must be talking about me.â
You and Yeosang looked over to see Yunho entering the garden. A smile appeared on your lips and you got up to greet your brother. He pulled you into a hug, which you thought was very strange, until he made a comment on your scent.
âYou smell clean.â
âYa! Of course I bathed!â
âJust making sure.â
âYouâre ridiculous.â
âNot at all.â Yunho chuckled. âHow is she, Yeosang?â
âIn good health, your highness. I wouldnât recommend skipping meals again.â
âDid you hear the doctor?â
âLoud and clear. I wonât do that again.â
âGood. Since itâs already late, why donât we have dinner together?â
âAre you sure? Donât you have things-â
âIâve set aside time for you. There is nowhere else I have to be.â
âAh, in that case, Iâd love for you to join me for dinner.â
âExcellent. You should stay too, Yeosang.â
âI would love to, but I do have another patient to see tonight.â
âVery well, if youâre all done here, I wonât keep you.â
âThank you. Have a good evening, your highness.â
Yeosang bowed and excused himself. You would have liked to enjoy dinner outside, but you certainly shouldnât make the Crown Prince look strange as you knew word of tonight would go around the next morning. You both went inside, dinner being brought over a while later. You told Yunho about your day in the garden. It was all exciting to him as he spent his whole day in his library.
âIf youâd like, I could come visit you everyday.â Yunho suggested. âKeep you company since you canât take your walks anymore.â
âI appreciate the offer, but I donât want to keep you from your studies. Iâll be alright, Yunho.â
âAre you sure?â
âYes. Speaking of, how have you been with your studies? Anything interesting?â
âIâd say so⊠but itâs mostly family history, and rather boring.â
âYou need to study all that to be king?â
âI need to know about the previous kings to better understand what is expected of me.â
âEveryone knows youâll be a great king. Youâll do well with your studies too. If thereâs anything I can do to help, just let me know.â
âAs long as you take care of yourself, thatâs the biggest help for me.â Yunho reached over to pet your head. âLikewise, if you need anything from me, just let me know. You can always send a message to Jongho if you canât reach me.â
âI know, thanks.â
After dinner Yunho stuck around a little while longer, but eventually it was time for him to leave. He was well aware you were tired, and wanted you to get some rest.
âWill you be going to bed too?â
âUnfortunately I still have some things to do.â Yunho mentioned. âBut donât worry, I wonât be up too late. So you sleep well.â
 âAlright, good night.â
âGood night, y/n.â
You saw Yunho off before getting ready for bed. Even if the day had started off a little rough, it could end on a better note. Perhaps better than you originally thought.
âŠâŠâ„âŠâŠ
Seonghwa wasnât kidding when he said he would visit the princess. The whole ordeal had been driving Hongjoong insane, and once night fell he knew where to find his ward. Of course he didnât come alone.
âWooyoung?â Seonghwa questioned. âWhat are you doing here?â
âIf you insist on doing such a thing.â Hongjoong explained. âI figured two look-outs would be better than one.â
âAh, see, thatâs the spirit. Thank you, Hongjoong.â
âLetâs just get this over with.â
âAre you really going to sneak into the princessâ quarters?â Wooyoung asked. âAre you two secret lovers?â
âI wonât be too long, hold this.â
Seonghwa handed Hongjoong a bouquet of flowers and then began scaling the wall. Of course there may not have been any guards present, but the entrance had been sealed. It was late in the night that most in the palace were asleep, but a locked door wasnât going to stop him. Once he was at the top he asked Hongjoong to pass him the flowers.
âAlright. Iâll be back.â
With a smile Seonghwa jumped down into the princessâ quarters. It may have been night, but the light of the moon illuminated his path. He took a moment to look at his surroundings, rather amazed by the beautiful garden he found himself in. There werenât just flowers, but there also seemed to be some vegetables. He certainly wouldnât except this of the princess, but it was a welcomed surprise. He carefully made his way over to the little house. It wasnât his idea to break in, so he looked for a window. He quickly discovered none of them were locked, so he carefully pushed them open to see inside. Then he found his target.
As he opened a window he could see a sleeping form in the room. For a moment he watched the blanket rise and fall peacefully, seeing that the princess was asleep. He almost felt bad waking her, but he was here for a reason. Seonghwa began whispering to the princess, trying to coax her to wake up. After a while he saw movement, getting excited. He continued with his coaxing and set the flowers down by the window. He saw the princess sit up, looking around before spotting the open window. It seemed she was still half-asleep as she crawled over to the window, not having noticed him.
âHuh⊠why are there- AH!â
For some reason you had woken up at night, and then noticed a chill in the air. You looked over to see your window open and crawled to it. Thatâs when you noticed the flowers, and then someone right outside your window. You screamed, now wide awake. The person outside was quickly apologizing, trying to get you to quiet down. It took a moment but then you actually recognized them.
âYou!â
âAh, you remember me, thatâs good.â
âHow did you get in here!? What are you doing here!? Iâm going to-â
âPrincess, Iâm here to apologize.â
âApologize?â
âYes. I know Iâve done it so many times already but⊠I didnât realize youâd suffer so harshly for my words.â
âItâs not your faultâŠâ
âIt is, princess. You can blame me for this. I didnât know there were rules pertaining to you, if I had I would have been more careful.â
âLike sneaking into my quarters at night?â
âPerhaps⊠I truly am sorry, I didnât think this would happen.â
âWell, Iâm sure the Queen would have found a reason to do this eventually.â
âIs your mother really not kind to you?â
âWhat reason would she have to be?â
âBecause youâre her daughter. Thatâs reason enough, isnât it?â
âShe wishes I wasnât⊠things would have been better that way tooâŠâ
âDonât say such things. You are a princess.â
âIn name alone. I canât really do much.â
âIâm sure there are many things you can do. I saw your garden, I presume you tend to it yourself?â
âI do.â
âItâs quite beautiful. More beautiful than the royal garden.â
âI wouldnât say that.â
âBut I would. You see the royal garden is taken care of by many out of necessity, but yours, you tend to this garden here with love and care. Thatâs what makes it so beautiful. Which makes me feel like the flowers I brought are inadequate to give you, but will you still accept them?â
The lord picked up the bouquet and held out the flowers to you, a big smile on his face. You stared at them for a moment, a little in awe at the situation before you. This was likely the first time anyone had given you flowers. You returned the smile and reached for the bouquet.
âLord Park, was it?â
âSeonghwa, you can call me Seonghwa. Although I must ask, I donât believe I ever had the pleasure of knowing your name.â
âAh, itâs y/n.â
âHm, just as beautiful as I imagined.â
You chuckled. âTell me then, Seonghwa, how is the palace? Now that youâve returned from the outside world.â
âHonestly, itâs not quite what I thought. As I walk the halls and take it all in I certainly feel something is missing.â
âWhat would that be?â
âThe presence of a beautiful princess.â
âOh please, you donât need to say such things. You just sound foolish.â
âPerhaps I am, but I will say such things regardless. It really would be nice to see you around the palace more often.â
âDonât hold your breath. If the Queen found out I was roaming around Iâd be scolded immediately. I really have no reason to be in the palace, so itâs best if I just stay here.â
âThen perhaps⊠would you allow me to visit you again sometime?â
âDo you intend to scale my walls again in the middle of the night?â
âItâs the only way to see you without getting you in trouble, so yes, with your permission of course.â
ââŠâ
âThink it over. Iâll come by in a few days. Good night, y/n.â
âGood night, lord- I mean, Seonghwa.â
âSleep well.â
Seonghwa took the initiative and shut your windows for you. Although you could still hear him sneaking away, giggling to yourself. You stared at the flowers in your hand, still in disbelief these were for you, and all the effort Seonghwa went through just to deliver them along with his apology. Besides that you realized how nice it was to hear your name spoken by someone who wasnât your brother. It sounded sweet. You werenât so sure youâd mind if he made more midnight visits, the little bit of company could replace your walk, perhaps even make you happier than before. You laid back down in bed and set the flowers down at your side, staring at them again. Maybe it wouldnât be so bad being confined to your quarters after all.
âŠâŠâ„âŠâŠ
Seonghwa stole a flower from the garden before making his escape. He hadnât heard anything from his guards so he figured everything was alright. Once he landed on the outside he saw Hongjoong approaching him.
âEverything went well, so-â
It didnât take long to realize Hongjoong wasnât alone. Right behind him was Wooyoung and a gentleman he recognized to be his fatherâs guard.
âAh⊠let me guess⊠my father wants to see me?â Hongjoong nodded his head. âWell, letâs not keep him waiting much longer.â
Seonghwa could just imagine the earful that was awaiting him. When he arrived at his fatherâs chambers he announced himself before entering. It was just the two of them in the room. After bowing Seonghwa took a seat, choosing not to start with an apology for his actions. He wanted to see where this went first. For a moment things were silent as his father stared down at a book, then he put it down and looked up at his son.
âHow are you adjusting to the palace?â
âItâs not difficult to navigate. All my classes are simple, and I donïżœïżœïżœt think there will be an issue with getting used to the atmosphere. I wonât cause you any problems, father.â
âIs that so? Then what were you doing in the princessâ quarters at this hour?â
âI was merely paying a visit in order to apologize for my actions.â
âDonât you think youâve caused her enough trouble?â
âSo youâre aware of what Iâve done.â
âEveryone in the palace knows of a lord approaching the princess and making a fool of themselves. Twice. Only a handful know it was actually you, and understand the honest mistake. You are a Park after all, socializing with the royal family isnât unheard of. Although I donât understand why youâd go out of your way to see her once more.â
âAs a gentleman I should apologize properly for my mistakes. She wound up confined to her quarters because of my actions, she should know I didnât mean her harm.â
âThatâs irrelevant. You wonât be seeing much of her anyway, so donât waste your time. If you get caught anywhere near her again-â
âShe will suffer more than I, and I have no intention of making things worse for her.â
âGood. Then the matter is settled. Focus on your studies, and when the time comes Iâll have you working with-â
âThat wonât be necessary.â
âHm?â
âIâve returned to the palace with my own goals, father. I donât really intend to follow in your footsteps.â
âWhat are you talking about? The Park family have been advisors to the royal family for generations. Itâs an honor.â
âItâs a disservice. We study about matters regarding the nation just as much, if not more, than those who take on the throne. Yet we are nothing but advisors? Iâve actually lived outside the palace and have come to know more about the people and the nation than the King.â
âThatâs enough! Do you have any idea what youâre talking about?â
âYouâve given your whole life to the King, our family has for generations, and I have no plans of doing the same. We are owed so much for what weâve done for this nation.â
âAnd what exactly do you think you are owed?â
âYou know what I speak of father.â
âDo I? Is this why you keep bothering the princess? You intend to court her and become the Kingâs son-in-law?â
âYou underestimate me.â
Minister Park laughed. âYou are quite ambitious my son, I am glad to see that, but we both know this desire for the throne is a delusion. Is this what youâve learned outside the palace? That anyone can be King?â
âPerhaps Iâd share in your ideals if I had been raised in the palace by your side, but that is not the case.â
âIf you think the princess is a means to attain the throne, you really have learned nothing. She is ill, her time in this world will likely be short. She cannot help you.â
âAll she has to do is bear a child. A prince favorably, but even a princess would do.â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âAny child birthed by the princess is a direct descendant of the King, and thus has a claim to the throne. If something were to happen to the Crown Prince then-â
âSilence! What you so boldly dare to imply is treason. I will not allow you to embark on such a dangerous and fruitless endeavor over something you have no claim over.â
âYou misunderstand me, father. I do not tell you this to ask for assistance. Iâm telling you to stay out of my way.â
âIf I discover you go anywhere near the princess again, if you get brought to the King for any matter concerning the princess, I will disown you.â
âIâd expect nothing less of you, father. You care more for the Park family reputation than your own son. I shall take my leave now.â
Seonghwa stood and offered his father a bow. He was certain his father would not rest easy for the next few days, but that wasnât his concern. As he was about to step out he stopped to admire the walls.
âYou know, when I was little I thought the palace would be my home. I wasnât happy that you sent me away, saying it was for my own good. I didnât really understand it then, nor do I understand it now.â Seonghwa sighed. âIâm well aware Iâd have to take matters into my own hands to get what I deserve. This place was always supposed to be my home, and I will make it so. Good night, father.â

With fanfiction I also HATE HATE HATE "canon" stories about them being idols. For example two members being together, Y/N being an idol or worse...a fan. They're too realistic for my liking, I love AUs because I treat idols more like face claims than anything else. People who always analyse and assume their sexuality or preference piss me off. Cause YOU CAN'T KNOW so idk why some of them are fighting saying "X CAN'T BE THIS OR THAT" etc đ€Ąđ€đ»
But again, I just can't imagine most idols in a sexual situation whether because I'm personally not attracted to them or it's difficult to see them calling people whores left and right. I think most fans don't realise not everyone is in a dom & sub dynamic. Most people just have sex and go with the flow... I understand writing self-indulgent stuff but the projecting is quite weird.
It's the same with kpop parties, girls or to a lesser extent guys almost cream their panties at the sight of a Korean guy đ« last night we had guard one of the DJs cause not only people kept bothering him about songs but some girls were also ridiculous. He doesn't speak English well so communication with him was hard for most people so the girls used it to their advantage and he was so confused đ

hihi!
With fanfiction I also HATE HATE HATE "canon" stories about them being idols. For example two members being together, Y/N being an idol or worse...a fan. I AGREE WITH THIS SO MUCH !!!! idol x idol reader âauâsâ are too realistic its kind of disturbing at times if written wackly đđ YES AUâs where u just face claim, personally when i write i make the âmemberâ just a regular character but just with their names,, as in i donât think of them and implement their entire nitty gritty details in them!! GORLLL THAT ASSUMING RLY PISSES ME OFF atinyâs do it so much! esp the twt ones! its like anyone who wears a rainbow coloured clothes and fans immediately go they belong to this side or the side,,, but they also donât realize that their stylist just made them wear the clothes because it fitâs the conceptđđ or the fact that a lot of idols are homophobic bc korea (or entirety of asia really) is so conservative + classists and everyone just assumes their preferences when most of them are doing fan services / are more likely straight UNLESS obviously they state it or something! EXACTLY! YOU CANâT KNOW NOTHING bc we doNt know them,, they just do their job PLS đđ
But again, I just can't imagine most idols in a sexual situation whether because I'm personally not attracted to them or it's difficult to see them calling people whores left and right. YEAHHH!! the deal breaker is when an idol who has like a puppy dog image,, in fics are the ones choking or calling whores and sluts and or cocksluts đđđ absolutely 100% !!! no bc some self indulgent is extremely wild (which ofc can be fine) but like u know its abt a real person,,, i find them attractive in the face (gorgeous ppl omg) and the personality they put on in front of fans otherwise i donât find any idol sexually attractive as in imagining doing certain things with them,,, i would not want to be with anyone of them bc theyâre probably drastically different from what we see,, the sub dom thinG ABSOLUTELY!!!!!! some project their fantasies of the HaRD dOm đđ
It's the same with kpop parties, girls or to a lesser extent guys almost cream their panties at the sight of a Korean guy đ« last night we had guard one of the DJs cause not only people kept bothering him about songs but some girls were also ridiculous. Yeah I call Seonghwa my actual boyfriend, but I'm literally aro-ace I would probably admire him irl (I mean I did actually ahhaahga) and think he's aesthetically pleasing maybe become friends with him and that's it.
YEAH YEAH!!! like id go âif u take one step, i need to meet ur mom for hand in marriageâ or doing house chores and put my hands on the waist and think âif i do this for seonghwa then what, am i a housewifeâ for funsies but id never mf look at them even for admiration id be avoiding contacts,, YEAH FRIENDS YEAH !!! its better just being friends rather than imagining them as ur ACTUAL husband
Please no ABO I'm kinkshaming idc... the furry allegations are hard to beat huh... just the ears and maybe tails for me pls đ„°

Chapter Three
(Prev//Next) (@starillusion13 @yizhou-time @hannahdinse8)
Prompt: You were a princess in name alone. Unable to perform any of the duties that come with the title. It seemed to be your destiny to live a quiet life. That is until you met someone who refused to see you silenced. Perhaps your fate was wrong all along.
âIâve never been given flowers beforeâŠâ
You couldnât help but stare longingly at the flowers Seonghwa gave you. In the morning you looked around for a vase, getting some water and setting up the flowers by your window. You made sure they were soaking up the sun, watching them with a smile on your face. Although despite the joy they brought you they did also make you worry. These flowers werenât ones you grew yourself, so surely someone would question where they came from. You werenât sure what kind of excuse youâd give, or what would be believable. Then again you made yourself anxious for no reason.
When your ladies or eunuch came by they merely did their duties. You tried to hide your flowers, but it made no difference. As far as you knew they didnât even notice them. To a degree it made you sad the flowers werenât important enough to be noticed, but at the same time it should have been expected. You lived such a quiet life, the little things never stood out. At least you didnât have to worry about hiding them and could admire them all the time. What you were really nervous about was Seonghwa. He said he would visit you again, and you excitedly waited for that time. The first two nights after his visit you didnât expect him, but on the third you stayed up late.
Youâd sit at your window, enjoying the night breeze and carefully tending to your gifted flowers. Youâve been doing your best to take care of them and make them last. It was easy to pass the time as you stared up at the stars, even starting to doze off. At some point you fell asleep, startled awake when you hit your head on the window sill. It was still dark out, but the moon was no longer up in the sky. The sun would be peeking over the horizon soon enough. It seemed that Seonghwa couldnât make a visit tonight, but you werenât upset. He was a busy person so perhaps tomorrow. You shut your window and went to bed. Of course you were tired by the time the sun rose, but you didnât mind and just pushed through.
No one was around so there was no issue with taking a nap during the day. After all, that next night you stayed up again, waiting for your secret visitor, but no one came to see you. It did hurt, but you really couldnât get your hopes up too much. Seonghwa surely had a lot of new responsibilities that kept him occupied, and a late night visit meant sacrificing his sleep. You napped during the day once more, and wondered if you should stay up late again or not. Ultimately you decided to sleep. Heâd surely come visit you eventually, so you just had to wait. What really hurt your heart was the fact the flowers he brought you were wilting. The little reminder of him that you had was fading away.
âPrincess⊠pst⊠y/n⊠are you awakeâŠ?â
âHmâŠâ
You groaned and slowly opened your eyes, looking around your room. Eventually your gaze turned towards your window, seeing a blurry figure waving. You didnât need clear vision to know who was there, a smile appearing on your lips. You crawled over to your window, rubbing the sleep from your eyes.
âHello, Iâm sorry I had to wake you, but I really wanted to see you.â
âHm⊠itâs nice to see you too.â
âDid you miss me?â
âIâve been waitingâŠâ
âIâll take that as a yes.â Seonghwa chuckled. âIâm sorry I didnât come sooner.â
âItâs okay. I know youâre busy.â
âI donât wanna be too busy to see you.â
âThen tell me about your days. I wanna know what a scholar does around the palace.â
âItâs very boring stuff.â
âIâm confined to my quarters all day. Anything outside these walls is interesting to me.â
âVery well.â
Seonghwa indulged your request and told you how he spent his days. He admitted he wanted to see you sooner, but his father swamped him with work. Once he was done with lectures he had tasks and different assignments to complete. He had to get through those first before he could even have a moment to himself. As tiresome as they were, they did take him all over the palace and gave him a chance to introduce himself to other officials.
âIt sounds like youâve seen more of the palace in the few days youâve been here than I have my whole life.â
âThatâs hardly fair.â
âYou forget Iâm also a lady. I doubt I have any business in many of the places youâve been.â
âStill, this is your home.â
âIt doesnât feel like it⊠then again, I donât think I know what a home feels likeâŠâ
âWeâll work on that.â
Seonghwa reached over to gently pet your head, continuing on as he told you about the things he did. You eagerly listened, loving the stories, but eventually Seonghwa noticed you dozing off.Â
âI see someone is sleepy.â
âIâm not⊠I can stay upâŠâ
âSh, itâs okay, Iâll come again to tell you more stories. Although, before I go.â Seonghwa revealed a bouquet of fresh flowers. âThese are for you. Iâll take the old ones.â
âNo, wait.â
âHm?â
âI wasnât going to throw the old ones away⊠I wanted to bury them in my garden⊠I donât want any gift from you to leave meâŠâ
âAh, how sweet. Iâll bury them for you on my way out then, but you must go to bed now.â
âFine⊠can I at least make another request before you go?â
âOf course.â
âDonât⊠donât make me wait so long⊠pleaseâŠâ
âI shall do my best princess, but you know-â
âI do⊠as long as you return before the flowers wilt, then I wonât be mad.â
âI see, I think I can work with that.âÂ
Seonghwa grabbed the flower vase, taking out the old flowers and putting in the new ones. He made sure to arrange them nicely, noticing your gaze on him. There was a nice little twinkle in your eyes, one that was only for him.
âThere you are. I shall see you again soon, my princess, good night.â
âGood night, Seonghwa.â
Seonghwa stuck around until you were tucked under your bed sheets, and he could be sure youâd be sleeping soon. He made his way through your garden, using the moonlight as his guide. Once he found a good place he dug a hole, burying the flowers he had given you before just as promised. Although he did take a petal, wanting a token of this gift as well.
âŠâŠâ„âŠâŠ
âThe Crown Prince is here.â
Yunho was doing his best to see you, wanting to make sure you were alright, and also giving himself a break from studying. Although when he came to see you he immediately became worried. You were laying in bed, food half eaten. He quickly knelt down at your side, gently coaxing you awake.
âY/n⊠y/n, wake up.â
âHm⊠YunhoâŠ?â
âAre you okay?â
âYeah, yeahâŠâ You sat up, yawning. âWhat are you doing here?â
âPaying you a visit, but why are you in bed? Do you feel ill?â
âNo, no, Iâm just sleepy, thatâs all. Look, I ate, and took my medicine.â
âYou should have eaten everything.â
âIâll keep that in mind.â
âHave you not been sleeping well?â
âI have. Iâm fine, Yunho. Thereâs not much for me to do, so sometimes a nap is nice.â
âHm⊠Iâm not sure if I believe you.â
âThen call Yeosang, but Iâm perfectly fine.â
âIâll take you up on that.â
You rolled your eyes, pulling over your food table, deciding to finish up what was left so Yunho could worry less. He happily watched you, reaching over to pet your head and getting a smile out of you too. While you ate he looked around the room, thinking of things to get you so you donât get so bored, but then his eyes landed on something peculiar.
âWhere did you get those flowers?â Yunho asked. âYou donât grow those in your garden.â
You froze mid-bite, knowing exactly what he was talking about. You were trying not to panic, knowing your heartbeat could give you away. Despite all the time you had you never really figured out what excuse to give when asked.
âDid one of your court ladies bring them?â
â⊠yeah⊠I wanted something different⊠maybe Iâll ask for these flower seeds in the future.â
âI see. Theyâre nice. Should I send you flowers?â
âNo, no, itâs okay.â
âSomething else perhaps. New flower seeds for your garden?â
âIâd prefer new paints. Itâs what I mostly do to pass the time.â
âVery well.â
Yunho stayed with you for a while longer, wanting to make sure youâd be alright and not sleep away your day. Even if you said you were fine he couldnât help but be concerned. So of course he sent word to Yeosang to pay you a visit later. He had to be sure you were okay at any given time. Even though you had requested paints he did like the idea of sending you flowers, although he wanted to make sure they werenât ones you had in your garden. He thought to send Jongho out to get some, but the boy let him know he didnât have much knowledge of flowers, let alone which oneâs the princess kept in her garden. It seemed that Yunho would have to venture out of the palace for that, so heâd have to plan for that in the future.

âI feel like weâve been seeing each other more often these days.â
âDoes that upset you, princess?â
âNot at all. If anything, I feel bad for wasting your time.â
âIâm a royal physician after all.â Yeosang reminded. âItâs my duty to look after the royal family.â
âWell, once again, I assure you Iâm fine, but my brother needs to be sure.â
âThereâs no harm in that.â
âI know.â
âThen letâs ease his worries. Iâm told youâve been having trouble sleeping.â
âNot really⊠I just want to take naps during the day.â
âThatâs new behavior for you.â
âSo? Itâs not concerning, is it?â
âNot at all, but it does sound like youâre not sleeping well at night.â
âI am.â
âWhich I am inclined to believe. Medically speaking, nothing in regards to your health should be affecting your sleep schedule, but Iâll check just to be sure.â
âGo ahead.â
You were used to Yeosangâs check-ups, especially as they were happening more than usual. Although you did need to figure out a way to stop making your brother worry. It seemed that every little thing about you was cause for concern, which was far from the truth. Staying up late at night and sleeping during the day shouldnât be a problem to him.
âAre you going to tell me why youâre not sleeping at night?â Yeosang asked. âI know thereâs an answer.â
â⊠sleeping during the day just passes the time faster. I donât have much to do anyway⊠besides, star-gazing is really nice.â
âI see. Youâre not a nocturnal creature though, so you shouldnât mess with your sleep like that.â
âIâll do better.â
âI hope so, but just in case Iâll leave you with some sleeping aids. Take one before bed with water and youâll be good.â
âThanks, Yeosang. You can let Yunho know Iâm doing okay.â
âI will. Now, since Iâm here, is there anything you want to discuss?â
âAbout what?â
âAnything, really, but if you say youâre good then Iâll be off.â
âYeah. Iâll see you next time.â
âBe well, princess.â
âIâll do my best.â
âŠâŠâ„âŠâŠ
If Seonghwa truly had his way heâd see you every night, but that was a luxury heâd have to work hard for. Even if he had his own plans and desires, he still had his title to uphold. For now at least. So there were things that were expected of him as a scholar and a Park. Not to mention he knew his father would be keeping a close eye on his progress. Moreso to make sure he didnât do anything to embarrass him or the Park family. Still, the thought of seeing you and winning your favor was all the motivation he needed. He knew you eagerly awaited his visit every night, which ultimately worked to help his plans.
Once he had a good routine every other second or third night heâd make the journey to your quarters. Each time heâd happily coax you awake, loving the twinkle in your eyes as you awoke to his call and realized he was there. You were so well behaved and eager for his company, Seonghwa knew he practically had you in the palm of his hand, but he would remain a gentleman. You needed care and love above all else. So he always made sure to bring fresh flowers, not wanting to repeat himself, nor give you anything that you had in your own garden. He had stuck around a while longer once you had gone to bed a few nights prior, wanting to get familiar with the space you called your own.
He felt your friendship was growing nicely, and as things progressed he did more. One night in particular he had brought over a blanket, wanting to lay under the stars with you. It provided you with some fresh air, and company. Seonghwa was more than happy to talk about the stars and the things he knew about them. It seemed you were fascinated with astrology, keeping your eyes glued to the stars while Seonghwaâs gaze remained on you. By now he had the temptation to kiss you, but he had to hold himself back. Time was on his side for now, and he could be patient. Of course late night visits could only last so long. While talking Seonghwa realized you were curled up next to him, dozing off. He chuckled and softly pet your head.
âI see itâs time for you to get to bed.â
â⊠it wonât be warmâŠâ
âShall I go with you then? I can stay until your bed warms up and youâre asleep.â
â⊠yes, pleaseâŠâ
âAlright, but you have to get up first.â
A pouty whine escaped your lips, but still, you had to get up. You sat up with Seonghwaâs help, rubbing the sleepiness from your eyes. The two of you went back to your room, Seonghwa making sure you were under your blankets before laying down beside you. He gently moved to spoon you, wanting to keep his word and warm you up. Although he had to be careful not to fall asleep himself. Late night visits took a toll on him too, but he could trade a good nightâs sleep for this. He hummed for a moment, listening to your steady heartbeat.
âYou know⊠we should try daytime visits.â
â⊠thatâs dangerous⊠I wouldnât want you getting in troubleâŠâ
âI worry more about you, but I do really want to see you bask in the sunlight. To tend to your garden together. Perhaps even share a meal.â
âI donât⊠sorryâŠâ
âHm? Why are you apologizing?â
You rolled over to face Seonghwa, seeing his curious eyes, but you could also see the exhaustion. You could get away with napping as you had nothing else to do, but Seonghwa didnât share in that privilege.
âYou must be tired during the dayâŠâ
âAh, itâs okay. I function well on a handful of hours of sleep. Iâd rather see you and lose some sleep than not see you at all.â
âBut those short nights will catch up to you eventuallyâŠâ
âI can handle it.â
âDo you want some sleeping aids?â
âSleeping aids? Why do you have those?â
âWhen my brother caught me taking a nap one morning he got worried and had Yeosang look me over. Heâs my doctor, and he gave me some sleeping aids, saying I shouldnât mess with my sleep schedule.â
âAh, are you saying Iâm bad for your health?â
âNo, not at all.â You chuckled. âMy brother just worries about every little thing when it comes to me. Anyway, I donât use sleeping aids, but it sounds like theyâd work better for you.â
âHm, perhaps they might.â
âTake them.â
You got up and brought over the little box Yeosang had given you before. You held it out to Seonghwa, who took it and examined the contents.
âHe said youâre supposed to take one before bed with some water.â
âIâll give them a try then.â
âGood. I want you to sleep well.â
âAs long as I get to see you I know Iâll have sweet dreams. Now come on, you do need to sleep.â
Seonghwa tucked you back in under your blanket, humming to help soothe you. It wasnât long before you were fast asleep, all warm and comfy. Seonghwa would have loved to stay longer, but that ran the risk of getting caught. He carefully moved away, being careful not to wake you. He took the box of sleeping aids and snuck out the window quietly closing it on his way out, then gathering up the blanket he brought. He still wanted to try and see you during the day but that would be a conversation for another time.Â
âŠâŠâ„âŠâŠ
Hongjoong was always rather nervous as he stood guard outside the princessâ quarters, not wanting to get caught, or worse, get Seonghwa in trouble. He was only ever at ease once Seonghwa returned to his own quarters and turned in for the night. Thatâs when he got his much needed downtime, although on this particular night that wouldnât be the case. As Hongjoong got ready to sleep himself he was approached by a familiar face. Words didnât need to be spoken, so Hongjoong merely followed the other, soon finding himself a guest of Minister Park.
âMinister Park, how may I be of service?â
âThereâs no need for such formalities. Sit, I merely wanted to speak with you.â
âOf course, minister.â
âIâm sure it hasnât been easy keeping an eye on my son, but knowing you are with him puts me at ease.â
âIâm glad to be of service.â
âThere hasnât been any trouble, has there?â
âNot at all. Lord Park does well to maintain the honor of the Park family. All those who meet him are impressed by him and eager to build a relationship.â
âI see. He must be very busy then. So heâs no longer making late night visits to the princess?â
ââŠâ
âHeâs persistent.â
âLord Park focuses on his duties first and foremost. His visits to the princess are only when he has time. He knows what the real priority is.â
âHm⊠then perhaps itâs best to remind him who he is.â
âŠâŠâ„âŠâŠ
Seonghwa truly enjoyed being in the palace. It felt right, and gave him peace of mind. So he had no trouble stepping out into the nearby villages, happy to mingle with the locals knowing where heâd return to in the end. Today he wanted to do something special, wanted to try something new. Of course Hongjoong was against the idea.
âVisiting the princess during the day is very risky.â Hongjoong reminded. âYouâre already busy as it is.â
âI have more time during the day. Besides, outside of meals and basic things, the princess is alone. There are many opportune times to visit her.â
âYou could get caught at any moment.â
âThatâs why I have you, and if you need any help we can ask Wooyoung.â
âSeonghwa-â
âI wonât do anything until I have a proper plan, so you donât need to worry.â
âI still donât think you should do this. Why donât you just focus on your work in the palace? You have an incredible career ahead of you.â
âOne I donât care for. I can do better for this nation and you know it.â
âSeonghwa, you have to know that what youâre after is insane. If anyone-â
âIâm going to need you to run a little errand for me today.â
Hongjoong has wanted to dissuade Seonghwa from his plan of courting the princess since he was first told of it. He had been trying, but his pleas were falling on deaf ears. Of course many times when the subject of the princess was brought up, Seonghwa was quick to change things when he no longer wanted to hear Hongjoong try to reason with him.Â
âWhat kind of errand?â
âI want you to deliver something to the princess.â
âWhat!?â
âSheâs never been outside the palace, so I want to send her something unique. These vendors sell all kinds of little treats Iâm sure sheâs never had. Although I should probably speak with her physician to make sure I donât send her anything that might make her sick.â
âI doubt her physician would share such information.â
âI have my ways of getting answers⊠today I want to send her little cakes, what do you think of these?â
âSeonghwa, this is also risky.â
âWhen I first wanted to apologize to the princess you suggested I send her a letter, whatâs so different about this that now you disapprove?â
âI-â
âJust sneak into her quarterâs after her court ladies leave her lunch. Can you do that?â
Hongjoong sighed. âYes, I can.â
âGood. Iâll take these then and write her a letter.â
Seonghwa paid for the cakes, eager to return to the palace and send off his gift. Although as soon as he was back he was approached by his fatherâs guard. He told the guard he was busy, but that wasnât an acceptable answer. It seems his gift would have to wait till later.
âŠâŠâ„âŠâŠ
âYour Highness, the King requests your presence in the throne room.â
âRight now? Is there a reason why?â
âOne was not stated, but we should not keep the King waiting.â
âAgreed.â
Yunho was rather surprised by the request. Even before the most recent events his father was not one to call on him so suddenly without reason. He couldnât help this uneasy feeling but heâd have to face it regardless. He made his way to the throne room, his arrival being announced and then stepping inside. He expected his father to be alone, but instead he was met with some guests, and familiar ones too.
âCrown Prince, I donât suppose you remember Lord Park Seonghwa, he is Minister Parkâs son.â
âI do. I heard of his return and the two of us reacquainted ourselves.â
âThatâs good. Since Lord Park has studied outside the palace heâd likely have good insight for you, so building a relationship would be wise.â
âI understand, your Majesty.â
Yunho knew the two of them would likely be pushed together by their fathers, but he didnât expect this so soon. Still, there didnât seem to be anything wrong with rekindling an old friendship. A few more things were mentioned but Yunho and Seonghwa were soon dismissed.
âHow have you been adjusting to the palace?â Yunho asked. âIt must be very different to the way you lived before.â
âItâs not too difficult to adapt, your highness.â
âI suppose this is still technically your home.â
âIt always has been.â
âCome. We should talk in a more comfortable setting.â
âYes, your highness.â
Things were a bit awkward between the two. Yunho would have preferred to build this relationship on his own, but there was no harm in getting to know each other sooner. If anything Yunho could help Seonghwa out as he settled into things at the palace. He brought Seonghwa over to a quiet place in the royal garden. Those from their entourage kept a few steps away and out of sight.
âI honestly thought youâd visit throughout the years, but I never saw you again until now.â
âI wanted to, but my father rejected the idea every time I brought it up. So eventually I stopped asking.â
âYouâre back now though.â
âIt was my father who requested I return, well, more like ordered me too. He sent me away and brought me back. I still donât understand why.â
âPerhaps it was all for this.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âYouâve lived and studied outside the palace, something I could never do. Together weâd surely be able to take care of the nation. Just like our fathers have.â
âI suppose youâre right.â
For a moment the two just sat in silence, letting the sounds of nature fill in the empty space. Their fathers would surely expect them to spend more time together going forward, but maybe not right now.
âIâm assuming your father brought you to the throne room and interrupted your day.â
âMore or less.â
âThen I wonât keep you too long. Feel free to stop by my library when you like. We should see each other more often and I would enjoy hearing some stories from your time outside the palace.â
âIâll make an effort to see you at least once a week, your highness.â
âIâd appreciate that.â
Seonghwa excused himself, but Yunho remained in the garden for a while longer. He thought back to his childhood, and the times he and Seonghwa used to play together. He wondered if they could actually rekindle an old friendship. His father and Minister Park got along well, and the nation thrived. He wanted to do right by the people as well when he became king, and Seonghwa was meant to help with that. Although his thoughts soon drifted to his studies. Besides his desires he had other things to consider, and he was nowhere near making a proper decision.
âŠâŠâ„âŠâŠ
âSeonghwa, are you alright?â
Hongjoong was certainly worried when Seonghwa was summoned and wound up in the throne room. He waited anxiously outside, and only got more nervous when the Crown Prince arrived. He feared the worst, but was greatly relieved when Seonghwa stepped out unharmed. Although the fact he was accompanying the Crown Prince was odd. Now that their little gathering was over Seonghwa was clearly upset.
âHe did this on purpose.â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âMy father has been making sure I have my hands full with my studies and tasks, trying to make sure Iâm too busy to do anything else. Clearly that wasnât enough so he brought me before the King and Crown Prince. He knows if I refuse them it not only looks bad on the family, but most of all me. Heâd have me disowned and exiled from the palace immediately, which would ruin my plans. He knew exactly what he was doing.â
âThen for now you must comply with his wishes.â
âIf I want to remain in the palace, yes.â
âPerhaps your father doesnât have ill intentions and is merely trying to help you. The Park family name is respected and you have a bright future ahead of you as-â
âAn advisor? No, a servant, better yet a slave. Iâve seen what this nation is like and itâs time for a change.â
âSeonghwa, donât speak like that. If someone hears you-â
âYou may not have studied history as much as I have, but I can tell you that the Jeong family has been in power for too long.â
âIf you want the throne so bad why donât you just challenge the King?â Hongjoong snapped. âOr wait until the Crown Prince ascends, why involve the princess? Youâre playing with her heart and manipulating her for your own benefit! Your father is trying to help you and remind you of whatâs important!â
âMy father⊠what did you tell him?â
âWhat?â
âThe other night I was looking for you and saw you walking off with my fatherâs guard, now what did you tell him?â
âI didnât-â
âNo wonder he pulled such a stunt today. He needed to add to my workload to keep me away from my own goals!â
âSeonghwa, you-â
âGet lost.â
âWhat?â
âGet lost! I donât need a traitor like you at my side.â
âI serve the Park family, Seonghwa, and that includes you. Itâs my job to protect you from all kinds of danger, especially while in the palace.â
âI donât need protection here, I need a friend, someone I can trust, and I mistakenly thought that was you. Now get out of my sight!â
Seonghwa took back the little bag of cakes Hongjoong had been holding onto, storming off, but Hongjoong followed without hesitation.
âSeonghwa, youâre being ridiculous, you-â
All of a sudden Seonghwa stopped in his tracks and turned around. He startled Hongjoong, distracting him as he reached for the boyâs sword and unsheathed it. The tip of the blade pointed at Hongjoongâs throat, keeping him frozen in place.
âIf youâre a servant of the Park family then you should know by now I intend to make my own path. I donât need a guard, I donât need you, Hongjoong. I told my father to stay out of my way, and the same applies to you. Do not show your face to me again unless you are prepared to die.â
Seonghwa threw the sword to the ground and walked away, this time Hongjoong did not follow. He merely stayed put, watching the other leave, uncertain of his own future.
âŠâŠâ„âŠâŠ
Seonghwa couldnât bring himself to see you, not after his day had fallen apart. As far as he was concerned everything that had happened so far would have no effect on his plans, but it would just complicate things. The little cakes he had gotten you were now cold, and he wanted you to enjoy them while they were fresh. Heâd have to make another trip outside the palace and plan accordingly in order to deliver them himself. For now he just retired to his own quarters, needing some peace.
A few days later he went to visit you at night, keeping to his original promise of seeing you before the flowers died. Despite everything that twinkle in your eyes shined bright, like a beacon of light in the darkness. You loved star gazing, but tonight he merely wanted to hold you in his arms. Hongjoongâs words rang in his head since they were true, but not entirely, not anymore. He thought he could trust him, but he should have known better. You canât really trust anyone in the palace. As he was lost in thought he was suddenly pulled back to reality by a hand running through his hair. His gaze met yours, seeing the curious and worried look in your eyes.
âAre you alright, Seonghwa? You seem⊠distant tonight.â
âApologies. I have a lot on my mind.â
âYou must really be busy.â
âIndeed I am.â
âThen⊠I wonât hold you to your previous promise anymore.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âYou donât have to come before the flowers wilt⊠I can wait for you, however long that takes.â
âPrincess, you donât need to say such things.â
âYouâre busy in the palace, and have many responsibilities to uphold. Youâre also the son of Minister Park, there must be quite the expectations on your shoulders. I donât want to be a burden to you.â
âY/n.â Seonghwa reached over to cup your cheeks. âYouâre not a burden to me. Seeing you brings me much joy, and itâs the best remedy after a long day. Iâm still getting used to everything, so I apologize for being so distant.â
âI can understand you have your priorities but⊠I must askâŠâ
âHm? What is it?â
âWhy⊠why do you care about me? Why did you approach me? Why do you sacrifice and put yourself in danger to see me?â
Seonghwa chuckled softly. âI wanted to see what had become of you after all these years⊠but also⊠I know what itâs like to be alone when there are so many people around you. To be at arms length from your parents⊠it may not really be my place, but I donât want you to be alone.â
âAre you alone in the palace?â
âIt seems I am⊠besides you of course.â
âBut you have your father, and guard.â
âNot really, not anymore.â
â⊠Iâm sorryâŠâ
âYou donât have to apologize. I know the palace is a lonely place, which is all the more reason to come see you. I want to keep our promise, and I want to see you during the day.â
âSeonghwa, you know-â
âI do, I do, weâll talk about this more some other time. Letâs just enjoy the present.â
Seonghwa pulled you closer, wanting to keep you wrapped up in his arms, safe and sound. He hummed softly and closed his eyes, listening to your steady heartbeat, providing him with comfort. He was slowly dozing off, a lot of exhaustion catching up to him, but then he heard a tapping on the window. His eyes snapped open, immediately on alert. For a second all he caught was the hilt of a sword, and then he noticed the slivers of sunlight in the sky. He had stayed for too long. Thankfully it seemed that you hadnât woken up, and heâd do nothing to disturb your sleep. Seonghwa carefully pulled himself away from you, biting his lip instead of kissing your head. He made his way out, careful to be quiet and not be seen.
âThank you, Wooyoung. Iâm sorry I must have fallen asleep at some point and lost track of time.â
As Seonghwa thanked Wooyoung for being his look out he saw the boy shaking his head, gesturing to someone behind Seonghwa. A scowl quickly appeared on Seonghwaâs face and he drew out Wooyoungâs sword. Although when he turned around, ready to keep his word, he saw Hongjoong on his knees, bowing his head as he held up his own sword. For a moment there was silence and then Hongjoong dared to speak.
âI was wrong, my lord. I am not a servant of the Park family, only yours. Whatever you desire, whatever becomes of you, I wish to stand by your side as a protector, but most of all a friend. The palace is a dangerous place and you should not traverse it alone. If youâll have me⊠I shall serve you until my dying breath. If I cannot do that for you then I ask you to keep your word. I am prepared to die.â
Hongjoong raised up his sword higher, still keeping his head bowed. Silence once again filled the air, the sounds of nature waking up, of a new day, began to take over the quiet morning. Seonghwa returned Wooyoungâs sword, stepping towards Hongjoong and taking the blade presented to him.
âStand.â
Hongjoong did as he was ordered, but did not meet Seonghwaâs gaze, not until the tip of the sword was under his chin.
âYou swear loyalty to me, no matter what happens? Youâll die for me if needed?â
âYes, my lord.â
âTsk.â
âSeonghwa.â
The tip of the sword was pressed against Hongjoongâs throat, any more pressure and blood would be drawn. If this was the end Hongjoong would accept it. He deserved it for abandoning his friend. Instead Seonghwa pulled the sword away, stepping closer and returning the sword to its sheath.
âI will hold you to your words, Hongjoong.â
âI expect nothing less.â
âThank you, for the wake up call.â
âYou definitely need to sleep more, which is why itâs best you visit the princess during the day.â
âAh, is that so?â
âYes. I know how you can accomplish this.â
âDo tell.â

Prompt: You were a princess in name alone. Unable to perform any of the duties that come with the title. It seemed to be your destiny to live a quiet life. That is until you met someone who refused to see you silenced. Perhaps your fate was wrong all along.
A/N: A new story for Ateez! Please show it lots of love!
âItâs morning, Princess. Time to wake up.â
A gentle sigh escaped your lips as you slowly opened your eyes. You could vaguely make out the sounds of birds chirping outside your window, a soothing little melody to help you welcome the new day. You sat up and did a bit of stretching, rubbing the sleep from your eyes. You looked around your room, the only few things that you could call your own. It was the same old stuff from before, nothing ever changed for you. A moment later you were up on your feet, one of your two court ladies helping you dress while the other tidied your room. Your breakfast was served and you ate until you felt full. Then came your medicine. It had a horrendous taste, but was necessary for your health. After drinking that you were left alone.
Most of your life had been confined to this room. The only exception was your evening walk and the family gatherings held in the Kingâs quarters. Two court ladies waited on you, as well as an eunuch, but they spent most of the day running errands around the palace unless you called on them. In all honesty you rarely called on any of your servants. Besides their basic duties of escorting you around the palace, bringing you your meals, and preparing you for the day, there wasnât much else they did. Being part of your entourage was probably the easiest job in the palace. For the most part you also dismissed your ladies in the morning, and they only returned to fulfill their daily tasks.
You lived a very solitary life ever since you were old enough to be left alone. It wasnât entirely by choice, but you understood why you had to stay in your quarters. You were born ill, and it wasnât something you could recover from. You took medicine daily to maintain what little of your health you had, and you stayed hidden from everyone else for that same reason. You had taken up many things to fill your days. You knew how to embroider, to paint, but unfortunately you could never take up music or dance. It was better to be quiet and not do anything that could cause you injury. Or in better terms, you shouldnât do anything that could draw attention to yourself. Everyone knew the royal family was ashamed of you, and for the most part you shared in those sentiments. The rumors around the palace were always the same.
âItâs hard to believe the Princess is of royal blood. Everyone would believe sheâs illegitimate if not for the fact sheâs the Crown Princeâs twin. I suppose since the Crown Prince is so strong and perfect, his twin must be the embodiment of all his weaknesses.â
The royal family has always been known to be strong, every offspring, and every in-law. Any sort of weakness in the royal family was unheard of, so your birth was seen as a bad omen. You were still of royal blood, so they werenât going to outright kill you. Instead they chose to keep your existence hidden. Not many outside the palace knew a Princess existed, and even some inside had no idea either. As far as they knew, you were just the daughter of some high ranking official, and you werenât around long enough for them to realize otherwise. Sometimes you wondered why you even bothered to stay alive.Â
You werenât exactly in a mood to do anything this morning, so you sat next to your window and looked out at your little garden. You did well to look after your plants, growing flowers and a few vegetables, but they werenât for you to eat. With your garden so full of color and variety it welcomed other creatures to stop by and keep you company. You got to provide food for butterflies and bees, as well as birds and bunnies. It was nice to watch them come to your garden, but also bittersweet. They lived freely, coming and going as they pleased. You longed for something like that, but the chains that kept you in place ran through your blood.
After lunch you went on your walk. You didnât go so far from your quarters, so it was a simple stroll through the royal garden, and a little walk around the palace. You walked the same path everyday, and as always kept to yourself. Occasionally youâd get a few glances your way, and heard some whispering about you, but no one ever approached you. They were either busy, or knew better than to engage with you. Not that youâd respond, you didnât want to socialize with others either. Thatâs why it was important to walk with some sense of purpose, even if it was just to get back to your quarters. That way you appeared busy, which was another reason for someone not to bother you. At least thatâs what usually worked.
âHello, my lady.â
A gentleman suddenly stepped in front of you, blocking your path. He smiled kindly and offered you a bow. By the style of his clothes, you could tell he was a lord, but certainly not a familiar one. Since he was speaking to you, he was probably new to the palace and had no idea who you were.
âItâs a pleasure to meet you.â
The lord reached for your hand, but you took a quick step back. In the process you lost your footing and fell to the ground. He asked if you were alright, and attempted to help you to your feet, but you only scrambled back. Tears stung your eyes as you knew your mother would hear about this whole embarrassment of a situation and scold you for it. On top of that you just felt so pathetic.
âLord Park!â
One of the guards came over and pulled the other away from you. The lord looked confused, but he was pushed back as the guard stepped forward and bowed.
âApologies, your Highness.â
âHighness?â
âLord Park is new to the palace and I am to escort him to his father. He escaped from my sight for a moment. Please forgive me for my failures. It wonât happen again.â
You didnât respond verbally, but when the guard looked up you nodded to him. He bowed once more before grabbing the lord and taking him elsewhere. You took a moment to steady your breath before attempting to get up. It wasnât exactly easy given that you were already nervous, so you asked your ladies to help you up. Once you were back on your feet your ladies dusted you off before you continued on your way. You asked them to help you with a change of clothes, knowing what was coming next.
âYour Highness, your presence is requested at the Kingâs quarters.â
âThe KingâŠâ
Your nerves went up tenfold when your eunuch came to deliver the news, although you werenât sure to be afraid or glad. The King never requested your presence, so this was a first. You made sure you were presentable and made your way over. Your arrival was announced and once you stepped inside you realized the real reason for your presence. The King hadnât requested you, this was just an impromptu meeting of the royal family. Any positive feelings you had about the situation subsided and you bowed before taking your seat next to the Queen.Â
Across from you the Crown Prince sat, and he smiled at you when you arrived. You offered him a smile back, but merely kept your head down and remained quiet. A conversation had been going on before you arrived, and you only interrupted for a moment. Your presence didnât change anything, so the others continued speaking as before. One of the court ladies served you some tea, but you werenât entirely in a mood. These little gatherings never really involved you, so it was certainly pointless to invite you. Although you were a member of the royal family so your physical presence was required.
âMother, Iâve told you, itâs too early to speak of marriage.â The Crown Prince said. âI have yet to begin my studies to inherit the throne.â
âAll the more reason. You need a Crown Princess to help you begin your duties as King.â
âFather hasnât even spoken of abdicating the throne. And even then, my marriage is not a condition to be King.â
âThere are plenty of young and beautiful ladies to choose from.â The King mentioned. âIt wouldnât be a bad idea to start looking at your options.â
âFather!â
The room erupted into laughter, and you merely smiled to yourself for a moment. Talks of the Crown Princeâs marriage had been going around for a while now. The Queen brought it up any chance she got, especially during these gatherings. Today seemed to mark the day the King finally joined in on that topic of conversation.
âYou bring up a good point my son. I do believe it is time for you to begin the most important studies for the throne.â
âAnd your Crown Princess can study her duties as the future Queen and your wife.â The Queen added. âItâd be wonderful.â
Even though you felt invisible, and were mostly unwanted, there was still a part of you that wanted recognition. Or at least some sort of acknowledgement.
âCongratulations on your ascension and engagement, Crown Prince. The entire nation will be overjoyed by the news. I promise to do my best with my duties as a Princess to assist you.â
âNothingâs official.â The Crown Prince spoke with a shy smile. âSimply speaking of it here doesnât put anything in motion.â
âNonsense.â The Queen stated. âI will send out a message in the morning to begin your search for a wife.â
âMother!â
âLet the boy begin his studies and focus on the throne first.â The King interrupted. âA King serves the nation before anyone else. We can talk of marriage once he understands what the throne truly means.â
âThank you, Father.â
âLet us meet tonight in the Crown Princeâs library. I have something to give you.â
âOf course, Father.â
The rest of the meeting continued on as it usually did. Despite speaking, no one cared for what you said, and you knew it was foolish to speak to begin with. You were the first to excuse yourself, leaving them to speak more freely, but to your surprise a moment later the Queen stepped out, coming over to speak with you. For a second there you thought you had escaped, but nothing got past the Queen.
âYou made a fool of yourself today.âÂ
ââŠâ
âYour duties as a Princess?â The Queen scoffed. âYou are a Princess in name alone. You are not capable of fulfilling any duties the title actually comes with. Do not expect to assist the Crown Prince with anything regarding his ascension to the throne, or marriage.â
âI understandâŠâ
âDo you? Or did you already forget about your earlier embarrassment? You canât even act like a proper lady in front of a lord.â
âI⊠Iâm sorry⊠I-â
âI donât want to hear it. Is it really that difficult not to draw attention to yourself?â
âApologies, your Majesty. I wonât cause a scene again.â
You bowed to the Queen as she went on her way, not moving until she and everyone from her entourage were out of sight. You took a deep breath to hold back your tears and then retreated to your quarters. Your court ladies were about to begin undressing you when the Crown Prince arrived. You welcomed him into your quarters, taking your proper seat and keeping your head low.
âWhat brings you by, Crown Prince?â
âYou know I hate when you talk to me like that, y/n. Itâs just us here, the least you can do is drop the titles.â
You slowly lifted your gaze, seeing the childish smile on your brotherâs face. You couldnât help but mimic it.
âI wasnât expecting you, Yunho. You donât usually visit me after family gatherings, you and the King tend to talk for a while longer.â
âHe wants to talk to me later, so I thought Iâd bless you with my presence now.â
You chuckled. âThank you.â
âAnything for my precious baby sister.â
âIâm like a minute younger than you.â
âWhich means Iâm a minute older, and that makes you my little sister.â
âYouâre ridiculous.â
âAnd you love me for it.â Yunho giggled. âSo, tell me about your day. I heard you ran into a lord. How was that?â
âUgh, donât remind me.â
âCome on, tell me, was he handsome? Or perhaps cute? Did he stutter talking to you?â
âStop it.â
âI wanna know.â
âWell, I fell to the ground and couldnât speak a word. One of the guards apologized to me and pulled him away. It was just embarrassing.âÂ
âOuch. That doesnât mean he wonât try again.â
âAs if. He surely knows all about me now and knows to stay away. Besides, itâs not like Iâm going to find someone and marry anytime soon.â
âWhy not?â
âYou havenât even gotten married yet. Thereâs no way Iâd marry before you. The Queen would never allow it.â
âYou donât know that.â
âI do. You do too. So donât play coy.â
âAlright. Letâs change the subject then. How are you doing lately? Any interesting updates?â
âDoesnât my physician tell you everything about my health?â
âWhat? Yeosang, would never tell me such things.â
âYou expect me to believe that?â
âI would like to hear from you. How have you been feeling?â
âNothingâs changed, Yunho. My condition is the same. No claws, no fangs, my eyes donât even change color.â
âIâm certain theyâll come in any day now.â
âThatâs unlikely. In my state, Iâm just lucky to be alive.â
âDonât talk like that.â
âItâs true. Iâm not strong like you, not at all. Youâre all grown up and ready to take on the throne, whereas I⊠I canât be away from my quarters for too long.â
âYouâre gonna get better. Yeosang tells me medicine is always advancing and-â
âIâd just like to live long enough to see you ascend the throne and marry. That would be enough for me.â
âNonsense. Youâll live far longer than that. You have to be around to meet your future nephews and nieces.â
âWeâll see.â
âIt is getting late, so Iâll let you get to bed. Good night.â
âGood night, Yunho.â
As far as you knew the only person who cared about you in the palace was your twin brother, Yunho. From an early age he was separated from you, he was the Crown Prince after all. Yet he made an effort to see you and play with you. He never said anything to your face, but you had heard the rumors all before. Everyone had been telling him not to engage with you, fearing heâd grow ill as well. Of course thatâs not how your illness worked, but he didnât seem to care either way. He was also told that he didnât have to see you, it wouldnât make him any less of a King if he did, but to him you were his sister and he wanted to be with you. Even though he sees you less nowadays, he still makes time for you and he treats you as his sister, and nothing less.
Of course all of that was made more complicated considering pack dynamics. The Crown Prince was an alpha, as was the King and Queen. It always had to be that way. Although despite the royal family being predominantly alphas, there were a few betas here and there, like yourself. For the most part the betas were just as strong and powerful, but clearly you were an outlier. As for everyone else who served the royal family, or the nation, they were either an alpha or beta since omegas were forbidden from entering the palace. They were the weakest of all, and could certainly cause problems, so in order to maintain peace and safety, they were not allowed.Â
There were other means of keeping balance as well. Everyone wore a necklace to help suppress their scent, the royal family included, and the same went for any guests. That way no one would be distracted by anothersâ pheromones. Furthermore, when necessary one would be excused from their duties to deal with heat and rut cycles. That is if they chose not to take suppressants. The palace was well organized so there was rarely any sort of problem in regards to oneâs own instincts. It honestly seemed redundant for you to wear a necklace to suppress your own scent since it was already so weak, even the suppressants seemed unnecessary, but everyone had to comply with the rules in order to maintain peace.
âHow are we doing today, Princess?â
At least once a week a royal physician comes to check on you. Over the years you had gotten friendly with them, now speaking on a first name basis.
âIâm the same, Yeosang. Nothing has changed, nothing ever changes with me.â
âOne must always have hope. I believe youâll get better some day.â
âWell that day cannot come fast enough.â You sighed. âDonât give Yunho false hope about my condition.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI know you report to him about my condition. Donât tell him Iâm getting better or improving when Iâm not. Heâs gonna start preparing to ascend the throne. He shouldnât worry about trivial things like my health.â
âPrincess.â
âLook after him. Thatâs the best thing you can do for me.â
âI understand.â
âŠâŠâ„âŠâŠ
Yunho always did his best to fulfill every title he carried. He was the Crown Prince, heir to the throne and future King of this nation. High expectations had been placed upon his shoulders since birth, and he didnât intend to let anyone down. He was also a son with the desire to make his parents proud, and part of that was making a life of his own. Yunho understood who he was, he knew that marrying for love wasnât exactly a luxury he had. Still, he could make the most of what he could control. Although he couldnât forget the other title bestowed upon him. That of an older brother.
It always displeased him to be told he didnât need to care for his little sister. He understood she was ill, and that others were looking after her, but he couldnât just ignore them. Even if everyone else did. At the end of the day he loved his sister and wanted to see her find happiness. Lately he hadnât been able to see her often, and he knew with the abdication of the throne coming up, and potential marriage, heâd see even less of her. He missed his sister at times, missed the days when they were still kids and could play together. Although right now he had great expectations to meet. Perhaps once he became King and was married, when things settled down, he could see her more often. For now he needed to focus on his studies.
The night the King wished to speak with him, Yunho was rather nervous. This was the true beginning of him taking on the throne, and he didnât want to disappoint anyone. After visiting his sister that evening he made his way to the Crown Princeâs library. There were still so many books he had yet to read, so he was curious what his father wanted to tell him. He waited patiently, reading quietly when the King finally arrived. Since it was just the two of them, and this was more about a father and his son, things were a little more relaxed. At first they made a bit of small talk, but tonight was about bigger things.
âIâm very proud of the man you are becoming.â Yunhoâs father spoke. âAnd I do believe it is time you prepare to take my place.â
âYou still have many more years on the throne, father.â
âPerhaps, but I do want you to learn more about our family, and the responsibilities you will come to bear.âÂ
âI understand.â
âGood.â
Yunho watched as his father made his way towards the back of the library. He figured he would recommend a book, but instead he opened a secret passageway, revealing a hidden room in the library. Yunhoâs eyes went wide and he followed his father into the new space. More books lined the walls, and a desk was in the center. He could tell many had passed through here before, all the kings before him, and those after him would learn of this place too.
âWoahâŠâ
âThis is the Crown Princeâs secret library. These books contain knowledge of our ancestors and our bloodline. Some of this information is unknown to the historians.â
âUnknown?â
âYou will come to understand why.â
The King stepped over to the desk, grabbing the book that had been left on it. He looked it over for a moment before handing it to his son.
âYunho⊠things are going to change for you from this moment on. I cannot tell you if they will be for better or for worse, as that is something you must decide for yourself.âÂ
âFatherâŠâ Yunho stared down at the book in his hands. âIâmâŠâ
âI do not expect you to begin your studies right away. So you may take some time to prepare, but the next steps are upon you. As always you may come to me for guidance.â
âThank you, Father.â
The King left Yunho in his library, and the boy had much to contemplate. He looked around the hidden room, very curious about the knowledge they pertained. Heâd be lying to himself if his fatherâs words didnât frighten him, but becoming a king was no easy task. The night was still young, and his own curiosities would not let him rest. Yunho sat down with the book he had been given, wanting to learn more about his family history and the legacy he would uphold.
âŠâŠâ„âŠâŠ
It was easy to get bored when the days were always the same. Although you had gotten used to the uneventful nature of your life. Despite what your court ladies would suggest, you decided to sleep in today. Perhaps your dreams would be more interesting. Unfortunately they werenât either, but at least sleep helped pass the time. You prepared for your evening walk, rather eager to see the garden. Around this time many of the flowers were blooming, adding to the beauty of the area. You were rather jealous of those flowers. Even if they stayed in one place, at least they didnât remain the same. They grew and bloomed, changing their colors and shape, beautiful at every point in their lives.
âPrincess.â
Hearing your title out in the open was always jarring. You ignored it though, not wanting to presume anyone was talking to you. There was a chance a foreign princess was in the palace, and you were never privy to such knowledge.
âYour highness, please.â
Someone stepped before you, forcing you to stop in your path. They were bowing to you, which was always a strange sight. You wondered who this was until they raised their head. It was the lord from before, Lord Park.
âApologies for my sudden presence, I wanted to speak with you about our first encounter.â
ââŠâ
âI wanted to properly apologize for my behavior. It was very rude in hindsight, and I suppose what Iâm doing right now is as well, but I also want to properly introduce myself. Iâm Park Seonghwa, and itâs a pleasure to meet you.â
You took a careful half-step back. The last time Lord Park had spoken to you things ended badly. You understood his intentions, but you had no idea what his end goal was here. Although you were aware of the outfit he wore.
âIâm new to the palace, but I still felt it necessary to meet you. Iâll be working under my father, Minister Park, and look forward to crossing paths again.â
You recognized the name Park when you first heard it, but you werenât sure if there was a relation. That is until now. The Park family has served the royal Jeong family for generations. Minister Park was the Kingâs most loyal and trusted advisor, as well as a close friend. The relationship between the two families has always been good, and has served the nation well. You knew the minister had a son that had been sent away to study and learn of the world. Now that son had returned as a man, and would continue to learn and grow under their father. At least now it made sense why Lord Park was making such efforts with you. It was best for him to have good relationships with the royal family, and that included the forsaken princess.
As eager as he sounded, you knew heâd soon learn the truth about your situation. There was no need to engage. That would surely also leave the right impression for him to learn from. You were hidden away for a reason, and things should remain that way. So you said nothing and walked past Lord Park, wanting to return to your quarters and mentally prepare for an unexpected visit from the Queen. Nothing got past her. You could hear the lord still calling to you, probably dumbfounded by your lack of a response, but that wasnât your concern. Not to mention a moment later you heard someone speaking to Lord Park, scolding him over his interaction with you. Things had to be this way.
At least thatâs what you always told yourself. Or perhaps thatâs what was always told to you. Either way you accepted it. Once you returned to your quarters you laid down. You really appreciated Lord Parkâs intentions earlier, feeling like an actual person, but it was all pointless. It was best to forget about him and move on. Hopefully heâd do the same, or at least get the message your silence invoked. You had your dinner and skimmed through one of your old books, thinking to request something new from the Crown Prince the next time he came by. That reminded you that it would probably be a while before you saw him again. He surely had already begun his studies for the throne, and that would be his top priority.
âThe Queen is here.â
You felt yourself grow cold when you heard those words, only stunned for a moment before you got up and greeted the Queen. You already knew what was coming, or perhaps you underestimated your situation. As soon as you raised your head you were met with a slap across the face. You felt the burning throb on your cheek, but you did not move to cradle your injury.
âIs it so difficult to follow a simple command?â
âApologies, your Majesty.â You bowed. âIt was not my intention to cause trouble. The lord approached me on my walk and-â
âDonât give me excuses. If a simple walk is the issue then just stay in your quarters.â
âWhatâŠ?â You slowly lifted your head. âWhat do you me-â
âYou have your own little garden here. Since itâs so difficult to not draw attention to yourself you shall remain in your quarters at all times unless you are called upon. Do I make myself clear?â
âYour Majesty-â Your words were met with another slap. â⊠yes⊠your Majesty, I understand.â
âThe last thing I need is you causing issues when the Crown Prince is preparing for the throne and marriage.â
âApologies, your Majesty.â You bowed once again. âI wonât be a burden anymore.â
âYou still are.â
The Queen left and you remained in your position. It wasnât until one of your court ladies came to check on you that you finally let yourself collapse. Silent tears had been dripping to the floor, and you soon joined them. With a crack in your voice you dismissed your lady, wanting to be alone. Tears continued to stream down your face, but you didnât make a sound. You had learned to quietly cry long ago. Your throat burned and ached as you cried for yourself, having no on there for you, no one on your side. As the tears continued to flow you eventually exhausted yourself, passing out on the floor. You woke a while later, well into the night, when you heard some commotion just outside your quarters. You had no idea what it was, nor did you care.
The world outside your quarters was so full of life, even at night, but it wasnât a world you were meant to partake in. It was very late, and you werenât going to bother any of your court ladies at this hour. You removed your garments, tossing them off to the side and setting out your blanket and pillow. You were still exhausted from the tears, but you knew you wouldnât have any pleasant dreams. A part of you hoped you wouldnât see the sunrise, but that was out of your hands. All you could do was close your eyes and see what the universe had planned for you.
âŠâŠâ„âŠâŠ
âYour Highness, please, itâs the middle of the night, canât this wait til morning?â
âNo. Where is the King?â
âAt this hour the King would be in his throne room reviewing petitions. You know he requests that no one bother him during that time.â
âHeâll make an exception.â
Yunho didnât care for the hour, or the words of his servant. This could not wait. There was only one person in the palace who could stop him in his tracks, and he knew exactly where they were. The Kingâs servants tried to question why Yunho was there at such a late hour but he ignored them all and stepped into the throne room.
âYour Highness-â
âLeave us.â
None of the servants moved, everyone looking towards the King for a command. Yunho stared down his father, making it clear he had no intention of leaving. After a moment the King noticed the book Yunho held and then ordered everyone to leave and keep a distance. Once the doors shut Yunho stalked up to the throne and slammed the book down on the table.
âYouâve known, this whole time, havenât you!?â
The King remained calm. âI presume this is about our lineage?â
âDoes mother know?â
âShe is unaware of the situation.â
âHow could you do this!? All these years she-â
âThis is necessary.â
âHow!? How could you possibly think-â
âThe choice I have made was not made lightly.â The King stood. âWhat I have done is for your own sake.â
âMy sake? How is it for my sake?â
âYou would not be king otherwise.â
âWhat?â
âYou come here angry and frustrated but you have yet to think of the consequences. That is something I pondered over for a long time. The way things are now guarantees peace. If you disrupt that, you could end up dead.â
âFatherâŠâ
âI am the King. The day the throne is yours you may do as you wish, but for now you do as I say. You have a lot to think about but I trust you wonât do anything rash. Am I clear?â
â⊠yes⊠your Majesty.â
Yunho took the book back, storming out of the room. His servants had been waiting outside the building, quick to follow him once he appeared.
âYour Highness, please tell me you didnât do anything to upset the King?â
Yunho didnât answer, too many things still going through his head. Although he did suddenly come to a stop. Yunhoâs gaze turned towards the entrance to his sisterâs quarters, unsure of how to feel.
âThe Princess is likely asleep at this hourâŠâ
âI know.â Yunho kept walking. âIâm turning in for the night.â
âYes, your Highness.â

Chapter Four
(Prev//Next) (@starillusion13 @yizhou-time @hannahdinse8)
Prompt: You were a princess in name alone. Unable to perform any of the duties that come with the title. It seemed to be your destiny to live a quiet life. That is until you met someone who refused to see you silenced. Perhaps your fate was wrong all along.
âSneaking into the princessâ quarters during the day shouldnât be too much trouble.â
âI know she has no guards, but sheâs not completely alone during the day.â
âFrom what Iâve gathered, we only have a small handful of people to worry about.â
âSo then, what is your plan for them?â
âFor starters, if youâre willing, you could ask San for a favor.â Hongjoong stated. âAs a scholar, San would have the authority to request the princessâ eunuch help him with errands. That way someone you know would keep the eunuch busy and be aware of his current movements. Of course this would only be necessary for the days you wish to visit.â
âHm, I see your point. Although it is risky to ask such a thing. Wooyoung seems reliable and doesnât ask questions. San on the other handâŠâ
âThe eunuch isnât too much of a problem. Now that the princess is confined to her quarters, her eunuch only visits her when the King requests her presence for the royal family gatherings. Those tend to happen on a predictable basis, so the eunuch isnât really any trouble.â
âIndeed. What of the court ladies?â
âThey visit the princess at certain times every day, following a routine. In order to ensure your privacy, Wooyoung could keep an eye on the ladies, making sure they donât spontaneously return to interrupt you. The two tend to stick together, so it would be easy for Wooyoung to charm them and keep them occupied until they return to their duties.â
âThen that just leaves you as my look-out, simple enough.â
âUnfortunately thatâs not the case.â
âWhat else is there?â
âThe royal family. The King has never once visited the princess, and has no reason to. The Queen only ever visits the princess when something happens, or perhaps after a family gathering, but the Crown Prince, he visits sporadically. Of course his visits arenât as frequent given his current studies, but they are unpredictable. A day you choose to visit could coincidentally be the day he does too, and I cannot fathom the consequences.â
âHm⊠so the real problem is the Crown Prince. Everyone else, even the princessâ court ladies and eunuch, keep a distance. He is the only one who cares to see her.â
âApologies for not having a solution.â
âThereâs no need for that. The Crown Prince may visit the princess on a whim, but there are certain days he cannot do that. Since I am to foster a friendship with him, I should know when those days are. Then we can plan accordingly.â
âThat should work.â
âIt should, but letâs not be hasty. Tell Wooyoung to get friendly with the court ladies, Iâll see if San is reliable. Weâll go from there.â
Seonghwa did like his odds with this plan, as he could have all his bases covered, but he knew patience was important. For the time being he continued making visits at night when he could, and had Wooyoung report to him about his progress. San wasnât a necessary part of his plan, but he did want to see if he could be trusted. What Seonghwa needed most was people on his side, at the moment all he had was Hongjoong, and Wooyoung by proxy.Â
âI didnât think Iâd be seeing much of you.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âIâve heard all about you and the Crown Prince.â San commented. âYou are a Park after all.â
âYeah, but thatâs different. Weâre friends, Iâd rather spend time with you.â
âThen why not a night out? I bet you could use one.â
âThat doesnât sound like a bad idea, but Iâm rather busy at night.â
âI bet.â
âWhat does that mean?â
âIâm not blind, Seonghwa. I know youâre busy during the day but youâre clearly not getting enough sleep at night. So, my guess, youâre seeing someone. Specifically youâre sneaking around. I presume you donât want your father knowing.â
âYou can say thatâŠâ
âSo, are you gonna tell me who it is? Wait, are you and Hongjoong-â
âNo! San, please.â
âIt was just a thought⊠then who?â
âI canât say.â
âHm, why not? You worried Iâm gonna tell your father?â
âWould you?â
âWhy would I? Iâm not acquainted with your father, and what kind of friend would I be if I screwed you over in regards to love.â
âIn that case⊠you could help me with something.â
âAh, what is it?â
âAs a scholar Iâm sure youâre busy, so why not bother an eunuch to help you out. I know just the one whoâs always looking for some work.â
âWho would that be?â
âThe princessâ eunuch.â
âThe⊠wait⊠are you seeingâŠâ
ââŠâ
âSeonghwa!â
âQuiet!â
âOh my gosh, I cannot⊠actually, I can⊠wow⊠that explains a lotâŠâ
âIs it obviousâŠ?â
âHonestly, not really. Others might think youâre staying up late to finish something important, but I know youâre a hard worker who wouldnât sacrifice sleep for such a thing. So of course it has to be about a lover.â
âI guess I canât fool you.â
âHardly. If anyone was ever going to marry the princess, it would be you.â
âWhy would you say that?â
âCome on, youâre the history enthusiast here. You know how things work when it comes to a princess. Her marriage tends to be some sort of arrangement for power, but lords arenât exactly eager to be a brother-in-law to the future king, even if their family benefits. Besides, the princess is ill, so itâs likely the royal family wonât bother marrying her off.â
âSo then where do I come in?â
âWell, with all that information, if anyone was ever going to approach the princess and want to marry her, it would be out of genuine love. Youâre the only person that comes to mind.â
âReally?â
âYou knew each other when you were kids, and youâre a Park. It kinda makes sense.â
âThatâs where youâre wrong, Iâm afraid.â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âI knew of her in my youth, but never truly met her until now. Also, because Iâm a Park I shouldnât get involved with the royal family in such a way. My father and the King have done great things for the nation, if both families were to become in-laws, other ministers and scholars could argue itâs a conflict of interest.â
âHm, I see. For generations the Parks and Jeongs have simply worked together but if they were to become family and continue with their current roles, it could get messy. No wonder youâre being so careful, you really donât want your father to know.â
âHe knows.â
âHe does!â
âItâs why my father has been piling on my work. Heâs trying to keep me busy.â
âAh, and youâre still going against him, huh?â
âIâm not gonna let him get in my way.â
âSo why do you need me to distract the princessâ eunuch? I thought you did night visits?â
âI want to change that.â
âOh, I see⊠are you sure thatâs a good idea?â
Seonghwa threw a glare. âWhat do you mean?â
âWell, the Crown Prince visits every now and then, what if he catches you? Actually, arenât you and the Crown Prince getting acquainted? Howâs he gonna feel when he finds out you want to marry the princess?â
âIâve already considered all that, so you donât need to worry. I just need to know if youâre on my side, if youâll help me.â
âSure, I donât see why not. I benefit from this, although I want something in return.â
âIâm sure itâs within reason, right?â
âOf course. I just want you to tell me about your dates.â
âSan!â
âCome on, I want to know. The princess is such a mystery, and youâre over here sneaking around to see her, itâs so romantic. Please. I can keep a secret.â
âFine, but if rumors start going around, I will take your head.â
âDeal! So, tell-â
âLater.â
âAwe, come on, just a little snippet. What are her quarters like?â
âDo you like the princess or something?â
âNo, no, Iâm not gonna steal your girl. I just want to know about the person whoâs stolen your heart. Thatâs all.â
âShe⊠she has her own garden. Itâs more beautiful than the royal one.â
âAh, cute.â
With every base covered things could move forward in Seonghwaâs plan. He wanted to build a good foundation before trying anything. Of course the final part was to figure out when the Crown Prince would be out of his way. At least once or twice a week heâd go to the Crown Princeâs library, simply socializing or discussing current policies. It was more of a mental exercise for the two as they had no say on the matters yet, but it was important to keep up appearances. Eventually Seonghwa got what he wanted.
âIâll be gone for a few days, so you donât have to come and find me.â
âOh, traveling? I heard you havenât left the palace in quiet some time.â
âPrecisely. My father believes itâs best to visit some of the areas outside the palace, see how the people live. I agree. If I am to be King one day, I need to better understand my subjects.â
âThatâs a good mentality to have.â
âIf youâd like to join me, I donât see either of our fathers opposing the idea.â
âIâve lived outside of the palace for a long time, Iâm not quiet ready to leave it.â
âI see, perhaps another time.â
âWeâll have plenty more chances for adventures in the future.â
Seonghwa relayed the information to Hongjoong, deciding the day the Crown Prince left was the day heâd visit. Everything was prepared accordingly, and on the chosen day Seonghwa was up before sunrise, going into the markets to pick up a gift and little cakes he had wanted to give you before. As he returned he wound up running into the Crown Prince on his way out.
âI didnât expect youâd see me off.â
âThat wasnât my intention, but itâs a pleasant encounter. Safe travels, your highness.â
âThank you, Iâll see you when I return.â
âUntil then.â
Seonghwa bowed and waited until the Crown Prince and his entourage were gone. He was excited for the day, eager to see the look on your face. By now San was already giving tasks to the eunuch, and he knew Wooyoung had been getting very friendly with the court ladies. As Seonghwa and Hongjoong made their way to the princessâ quarters he could see Wooyoung and the two court ladies walking together, all laughing.
âIâll let you know when lunch time is approaching, otherwise, you should have no interruptions.â
âExcellent.â
âŠâŠâ„âŠâŠ
Before leaving Yunho had come to pay you a visit, letting you know heâd be away from the palace for a while. You were a bit jealous that he got to go out and see the world, but he promised to come tell you stories when he got back. You wanted to see him off, but you knew if the Queen caught wind of you sneaking out things would somehow get worse for you. Instead youâd just wait for your brother to return. You figured that perhaps youâd see a bit more of Seonghwa, but you could only hope.
âPrincessâŠâ
You heard a whisper as you were eating breakfast, looking around in confusion. You thought maybe you were hearing things but then you heard a knock. Your window was open, which only made things stranger. Then you noticed the silhouette of a person at your door. For a moment you panicked, and then the doors slid open, revealing a familiar face. Your eyes went wide and everything clicked into place.
âSeonghwa!?â
âGood morning, princess.â
âWhat are you doing here!?â You jumped to your feet. âSeonghwa! What if someone sees you!?â
âIâve already taken care of everything. No oneâs going to bother us.â
âBut-â
âWooyoung is with your court ladies, and San is keeping your eunuch busy today. Hongjoong is my lookout and the Crown Prince is out of the palace. Who could possibly discover us?â
â⊠you⊠you really thought of everything⊠youâre really hereâŠâ
âI told you I wanted to see you during the day, and nothing was going to stop me.â
You were still nervous about this whole ordeal, but the more you thought about it the more you were in awe. He had all the important people out of the way. Only misfortune would interrupt this moment. You laughed with joy and hugged Seonghwa tight, still finding the whole scene unbelievable. Seonghwa hugged you back, rubbing circles along your back.
âAlright, alright, you still need to eat breakfast. Itâs one of the most important meals of the day.â
âWait, what about you!? Arenât you hungry?â
âIâm alright, plus I brought you something.â Seonghwa revealed a small bag, the smell coming from it was divine. âThese are fresh from the market.â
âThe market? You mean outside the palace?â
âYes. I woke up extra early to get them for you. I hope you like them.â
âSeonghwa, you didnât have to.â
âOf course I did, today is a very special day.â
With your mind at ease you happily welcomed Seonghwa to share a meal with you. It made you so giddy you couldnât contain your smile. Seonghwa insisted on feeding you, wanting you to eat some proper food before you tried the little cakes he had brought. They tasted just as good as they smelled. This was your first time eating something from outside the palace and it was so good.
âTell me, how does palace food compare to outside food?â
âHm, Iâd say palace food is good and healthy, but there are so many other foods out there that are just so delicious. These little cakes for one you wonât find in here.â
âWow, I can only imagine the type of foods youâve had growing up.â
âIâll see if maybe I can bring you some.â
âYou donât think I could maybe sneak out with you?â
âAh, werenât you the one talking about how dangerous it was for me to be here during the day, and now you want to sneak out of the palace?â
âI didnât think youâd actually figure out a way to sneak in here. Maybe you could get me out of the palace⊠then again, youâd be in big trouble if we got caught.â
âIâll think about it though. Sneaking you out at night would be far easier, but the problem will always be the Crown Prince.â
âI know. He wonât be around for a while.â
âSo I can come see you lots more.â
After you finished eating you took your medicine, your grimace making Seonghwa chuckle. You both enjoyed the rest of the cakes out in your garden while cuddling atop a blanket. Seonghwa was glad to see you bask in the sun, getting to see you in a new light. Time seemed to move so fast that before he knew it Hongjoong was signalling to him that it was almost noon, and he had to leave.
âAre you gonna visit me tomorrow?â
âIâd like to, but I have to see how everything went today first.â
âAlright, but either way, today was wonderful.â
âI agree. Before I go, I do have a gift for you.â
âA gift?â
âSomething to commemorate such a day.â
Seonghwa revealed a small pouch, pulling out a necklace from it. The gold sparkled in the sunlight, and hanging from the chain was a beautiful sun and moon cradled together.
âItâs beautiful, Seonghwa.â
âThen it will match you well.â
Seonghwa moved your hair aside and placed the necklace on you, enjoying the happiness on your face. Being gifted flowers was one thing, but something like this was new.
âI love it.â
âIâm glad you do. I hope it reminds you of me and keeps you company while I am away.â
âThank you. Itâs wonderful!â
You hugged Seonghwa tightly, not wanting him to go, but you knew he had to. You had taken up his morning, and surely he had things to do as well. You were grateful for the time he gave you, and looked forward to more day time visits. Seonghwa didnât want to leave you either. He could simply hide while your court ladies brought you lunch, but he canât push his luck on the first day. As he held you in his arms he buried his face in the crook of your neck. Your scent was so faint, it was practically nonexistent, but with his sharp nose he could pick up on the slightest hint of honey sweetness. One day he really wanted to know your scent, but that was a whole other conversation. Although as he held you he picked up on something strange.
Concern immediately showed on his face, but you didnât see it. Perhaps he was mistaken, but this was such a strange thing to randomly come to mind. He pushed it aside and made sure to part ways on a good note, promising to visit soon. Afterwards he gathered with his people, asking how things went on their end. For Wooyoung nothing of note happened. The ladies did their duty and spent their free time lounging around. Since they were important to the princess they couldnât be given orders by others, unless such orders came from the King and Queen themselves. As for San, he seems to have made a new friend. The eunuch preferred the consistency of helping one person than just being yanked around all day.
âSo the day was a success?â
âIâd say so.â
After lunch Seonghwa returned to his usual tasks. Hongjoong remained by his side, finishing up his own meal.
âWill you be visiting again tomorrow?â
âI want to, but Iâd like to try in the afternoon.â
âYou mean after lunch?â
âYes, get a feel for both times and see what works best.â
âThat shouldnât be much of a problem.â
âI donât think so either. Hongjoong, may I ask for your opinion on something?â
âSuch as?â
âThe princess expressed a desire to sneak out of the palace. Do you think such a thing is plausible?â
âI think you know the answer. Itâs very well possible, but realistically only at night. Even then, doing such a thing is extremely risky. She is still a princess, and if something were to happen, or you get caught, we could all end up dead.â
âI know. I donât wish to put her in danger but the idea of stepping out of the palace really made her eyes light up. Sheâs been a prisoner here her whole life, and her cage has only gotten smaller as of late.â
âItâs not really possible now, but when you accomplish your goal, you could certainly venture out together with all the necessary precautions.â
âWhen? You truly believe in my desires?â
âI do. Either Iâll address you as your majesty one day, or weâll be buried in the ground. I welcome whichever outcome destiny bestows upon us.â
âI agree.â
âŠâŠâ„âŠâŠ
Seonghwa felt confident with an afternoon visit, planning accordingly and surprising you once more. You welcomed him, and shared a meal once again, enjoying each otherâs company out in your garden. This time around Seonghwa brought some of his work, wanting to do something rather mundane with you. The idea was wonderful as it made you feel normal, and less alone. As Seonghwa read his books and jotted down notes you were painting at his side. You wanted to paint him, but you couldnât do it in secret. If anything youâd ask him about it so he could dress up if he wanted to.
Seonghwa did prefer the early visits, being one of the first people to see you in the morning. He could get you fresh pastries from the market and brighten your day. As he got a bit more comfortable and confident he began sneaking in the moment the court ladies were gone. That way the two of you had as much time as possible. Although something had been bothering him, and he was only aware of it in the morning. He thought he had just been imagining things, but after the first time he made a point to look out for it, and he never failed to find it. Now he just needed to find the source. He had tried to be discrete about it, but you only ever watched him, so of course youâd notice.
âWhatâs wrong, Seonghwa?â
â⊠nothing, itâs nothing.â
âI donât believe that. What is it? I meanâŠâ You took a moment. âI can tell something is up, and if I can help I would like to, but I understand if you donât want to shareâŠâ
âNo, no, itâs not that⊠I donât want to worry you.â
âWhat would I worry about?â
âI⊠when Iâm here⊠in the morning⊠I keep catching this faint scent of wolfsbane.â
âWolfsbane? Thatâs impossible. The only wolfsbane in the palace is in the armory. You havenât been around there, have you?â
âNo. I have no reason to, but itâs bothering me.â
âI donât smell anything, but then again my senses donât really work.â
âItâs alright. I could be crazy, but I do want to figure this out.â
âWell, youâre more than welcome to search my quarters if itâll ease your worries.â
âI donât want to rummage around your things, thatâs incredibly rude.â
âIf it helps you I donât mind.â
âI appreciate that but⊠have you been feeling alright lately?â
âThat depends on what you mean by alright. I havenât really gotten any worse, or better.â
âHmâŠâ
âYou think youâre getting it from the food? Maybe a guard or something was in the kitchen and the scent of wolfsbane lingered.â
âI havenât really gotten the scent from there. Iâve also eaten your food before too and nothing ever seemed off with it.â
âThen letâs try something else.â
You moved the table aside, getting closer to Seonghwa and taking his hands in yours. He wasnât sure what you had in mind, but heâd play along.
âClose your eyes and focus on your sense of smell. I know you said the scent was faint, but with your nose maybe you can find the source.â
âPerhaps.â
âTry it.â
Seonghwa did as you asked, closing his eyes and focusing on his sense of smell. He honed in on the smells of your room, identifying them and moving past them. When he caught a faint whiff of wolfsbane he slowly moved his head. You noticed his actions and let go of his hands, letting him follow the scent. Seonghwa did just that, getting on his hands and knees and moving carefully until he hit a table. He opened his eyes and saw a small bowl, traces of some mysterious liquid lingering.
âWhat is this?â
âThatâs my medicine.â
âMedicine?â
âYes. I take it every morning. Itâs a mix of herbs and stuff. It has a bitter taste, so I take it first before eating.â
Seonghwa picked up the bowl, taking in a deep breath. He could smell wolfsbane, but he couldnât be one hundred percent sure this was it. After putting the bowl down he moved closer to you, leaning in and making you move back a bit. When he had initially caught the scent of wolfsbane it had been while close to you. Now that he was following the scent he was led to you again. He wasnât sure if it was just his fears or not, but he could smell wolfsbane coming from your lips.
âDoes the medicine help you?â
âIt keeps me healthy. I havenât gotten worse so I guess itâs working. Why?â
âDonât drink it tomorrow morning, wait for me.â
âHuh? Seonghwa-â
âPlease.â
âYou think thereâs wolfsbane in my medicine?â
âI donât know, but I can check tomorrow. Promise you wonât drink it until I come by.â
âAlright, I promise.â
âGood girl.â
Seonghwa hoped he was wrong about this, because just thinking about it was making him worry. The next day couldnât come fast enough but when it did Seonghwa was with you bright and early. You were of course happy to see him, but you knew he had something else on his mind. You handed him the little bowl that held your medicine, not having a drop of it. He smelled the contents, getting an earthy smell, and he had to admit it really did smell like medicine. Although he did also catch a tiny hint of wolfsbane. He didnât really ask, but decided to take a sip anyway.
âSeonghwa-â
Before you could finish your words Seonghwa spit out the medicine, a grimace on his face. You could have reminded him of the bitter taste before he did such a thing, but then he merely tossed out the bowlâs contents into your yard.
âSeonghwa! Are you insane!â
âDonât drink that.â
âSeonghwa!â
âThereâs wolfsbane in your medicine.â
âWhat?â
âI know you probably canât tell with your senses all numbed up, but I tasted it. You shouldnât be drinking that.â
âThere is no way thereâs wolfsbane in my medicine! Youâre crazy.â
âI know it sounds that way, but you have to believe me. I may have tasted a bit, but it was there, Iâm certain of it.â
âSeonghwa, itâs medicine, and I need it!â
âDo you? Tell me, since youâve started taking it, have you actually gotten better?â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âThink about it, has it actually helped you? Or made things worse?â
âI⊠I⊠well⊠it didnât really help when I first started taking it⊠but that was just my body adjusting to the medicine, it doesnât mean anything.â
âIt could.â Seonghwa grabbed your shoulders. âDonât take the medicine anymore.â
âSeonghwa, I canât just-â
âJust for a bit, see what happens.â
âSeonghwaâŠâ
âI know, I know.â Seonghwa cradled your face. âWhat Iâm asking is insane, and a lot, but I need you to trust me here. Iâm terrified of what this means.â
As crazy as this all sounded, you could tell Seonghwa was being sincere. You didnât like this, but youâd trust him for now. Besides, you were already skipping your medicine today. There was no way you could get another serving without raising suspicion. Seonghwa hugged you tightly, wanting to make the most of the time you had left, even if he had certainly spoiled the mood. You both did your best to put this behind you, just glad to be in each otherâs company. Not to mention your brother would be returning soon, so your days were numbered.
âIâll be by tomorrow, youâll keep your promise, right?â
âI will. Promise.â
âGood. Iâll see you tomorrow then.â
âUntil then.â
Seonghwa left after putting a smile on your face. Once outside your quarters he was greeted by Hongjoong. Although the boy noticed the serious look on his face.
âI heard a bit of a commotion earlier, is everything alright?â
âNo. I need you to investigate who is in charge of the princessâ medicine and meals.â
âIs something wrong?â
âI believe someone is poisoning the princess, has been for years.â
âŠâŠâ„âŠâŠ
You were worried about Seonghwa. Everything he had said, you didnât want to believe him, but all you could do was trust him. Your sense didnât work the way they were supposed to. As far as you knew the medicine didnât even have a smell, yet he could pick up on the details, and even taste wolfsbane. In all honesty you were scared. If you didnât take your medicine you had no idea what would happen to you. All your life you had been so weak and powerless, believing the medicine you took gave you what little strength you had. Seonghwa didnât see it that way, and he had no reason to lie to you. He was going to look into things, so you just had to be patient and wait for news. It was probably gonna drive you insane until then.
âŠâŠâ„âŠâŠ
Even though Seonghwa had Hongjoong looking into the situation, there were other things he could do. There was someone he had wanted to meet for a while now, and he finally had a good reason too. When he had a moment in the afternoon he went off to look for a physician. He knocked at the door, getting the attention of the gentleman present.Â
âHello, Iâm looking for a physician.â
âAh, Lord Park, itâs an honor to meet you.â The gentleman bowed. âIâm physician Kang, how can I help you?â
âArenât you a royal physician?â
âI am, but considering who your father is, Iâm at your service as well.â
âOh, lucky me. Iâve simply been feeling under the weather and wanted a professional opinion.â
âOf course, come with me and have a seat.â
For privacyâs sake, Seonghwa was led into another room. He took a seat as the physician began his examination.
âPhysician-â
âYou can just call me Yeosang if thatâs easier for you.â
âYeosang then. I must say, youâre pretty young to be a physician, a royal one at that.â
âIâve always wanted to heal others, ever since I was little. I studied hard and now here I am.â
âYou must be very good to be where you are.â
âI believe so, but I also have some favor with the Crown Prince.â
âAh, you must be good friends. No wonder he trusts you to attend to him and his family.â
âIâm just doing my job at the end of the day.â
âI suppose you have your hands full dealing with the princessâ illness. Iâm sure you take good care of her. I havenât had a chance to see her since she stopped going on her walks.â
âJust a precaution. Her health is of utmost importance.â
âReally? Iâve heard rumors that the Queen isolated her out of shame.â
âYou surely know the palace staff like to gossip.â
âTrue. How is she though, doing well?â
âOf course.â
âDoes she need anything? Iâve wanted to send gifts but Iâm not sure whatâs appropriate. Do certain medicines work better than others for her?â
âYou donât need to worry about her health, itâs well taken care of. Other gifts would be better to lift her spirits.â
âHm. Then I guess you must be busy everyday with her medicine.â
âI donât prepare her medicine.â
âWhat? Youâre her physician though, arenât you?â
âYes, but she is royalty. Something of such importance is to be handled by those above me. I know the recipe in case I ever need to prepare it, but that hasnât come up.â
âAt least youâre prepared. Iâm glad to know the princess is in good hands.â
Seonghwa left having more questions than answers. At least he hoped Hongjoong had some information. Later in the evening the two met up, sharing a meal and enjoying the quiet atmosphere.
âHow was your visit to the physician?â
âUneventful. I was wrong in believing the physician was involved. Although it only creates more questions. Did you find anything?â
âNot exactly. Since Wooyoung has gotten close to the court ladies I asked him to investigate a bit. He informed me that the court ladies merely pick up the food as everything is prepared by certain employees beforehand.â
âDo you know who?â
âFrom what I gathered, it seems to be the Queenâs people who deal with the meals and medicine of the princess. Itâs not entirely odd, the Queen does the same for the Crown Prince when he is here, butâŠthe Queen herself approves of the food, and her people hand it over to the court ladies. No one else seems to come in contact with it from there.â
âSo⊠itâs the QueenâŠâ
âYou donât seriously think the Queen has been trying to kill her own daughter?â
âConsidering all sheâs done, and how she treats the princess, is it really that hard to believe?â
âIf she really wanted to, she could have done so a long time ago? Why the small doses of wolfsbane then? Why drag it out?â
âIâm not sure, perhaps to make it appear more natural. The princess has been sick since she was a child, many believe the fact sheâs still alive today to be some miracle. If she began to slowly deteriorate and then pass away, who would possibly think foul play?â
âWould anyone truly think the princess was murdered if she passed away today?â
âHongjoong.â
âApologies, Iâm just trying to understand. It doesnât make sense⊠dragging it out is just torturous, who would benefit from this?â
âThe royal family is meant to be strong, the fact sheâs still alive is proof of that, although perhaps this has nothing to do with her.â
âWhat?â
âThe only person who cares for her is the Crown Prince. I wouldnât put it beneath the Queen to make the princessâ death look more natural for his sake. If anyone would want an investigation, or could even get one, it would be him. If he can accept her death with his own senses as being natural, no one would be the wiser.â
âWould the Queen really do such a thing?â
âRegardless of her reasoning, I donât doubt it.â
âAre you really gonna tell the princess about this? What if youâre wrong?âÂ
âMaybe I am, but I wonât hide this from her. She deserves to know what we do and come to her own conclusions.â

do you by any chance share recommendations on fics?
Hi, hi! Sorry for a late response, I needed to be on my laptop to answer this one so I could link stuff. I haven't done too many recommendations, but in regards to fics it kinda depends on who you are asking about. On a previous post I recommended some of my moots fics @sanaxo-o and they write a lot about The Boyz. I spoke of some of their fics on this post. If you're looking for some NCT @peanutpinet and @neopuppy are some of my favorite writers. If you want some more NCT with a mix of ATZ then @starillusion13 has some good stuff too. For actual fics... I would recommend
Allure by @last-words-ofashootingstar
It's ATZ, main pairing of MATZ with ABO and yandere themes. If you're into that group do take a read and show the author lots of love!!!
Although feel free to message with specific groups in mind and always feel free to recommend me some fics too!!!
