NDRV3: Chapter 2 Free Times
Before we begin: I managed to get a level up for the mere act of waking up. If only that were the case in real life.
Well, I found out how the game was going to deal with the free times from before Kaede died: by completely ignoring them. If I’d known, I’d have been tempted to switch out Himiko for Maki, but I found Himiko first and only realised once I saw the shards for her had reset. :-/
Himiko Yumeno: Well, Shuichi decided not to sacrifice himself to power her magic but I was certainly tempted. Interesting that Himiko claims to have had a teacher: a sleight-of-hand magician teacher whose words she’s twisting? made-up? or someone encouraging her chuuni?
Kokichi Oma: I’m glad I did this before finding out what’s coming up. Pretty vague for now (obviously, nothing Kokichi said could be taken seriously) but maybe will get a better idea of what’s true and what’s not later on.
We then got the motive for the upcoming murder. The Monokubs mixing them up is about as much I expected from them, but I also reasonably suspect that it was on purpose for the extra suspicion. In the aftermath, it was quite nice to see K1-B0 start to grow a backbone, though I can also see the merit of Kokichi’s suggestions. One flaw with K1-B0′s plan: if you don’t know who’s got who’s motive, then you can’t be certain no-one has their own.
Got the casino trip with Miu, Kaito, Kokichi, Ryoma and Korekiyo afterwards. Meh. I’m still not a fan of the casino.
Kirumi Tojo: Still at the ‘I’m just a maid who has to obey everyone’s orders’ step, which isn’t particularly flattering. I’m hoping that this is just the first step and Shuichi will realise he has to be more assertive and proactive in treating Kirumi as an equal. (Speculating about what would happen if someone felt obligated to serve me, and what I would need to do to avoid taking advantage of them, happens to be something of a hobby of mine, so I’m hoping they do justice to this setup.)
Kaito Momota: I feel like I should have realised that the Ultimate Astronaut would be one of the most talented people there. It’s an obvious move for the writers to make, but a pleasant one. Not a fan of the whole ‘Person asks question; you choose answer from options; all of them were wrong,’ trope which has cropped up again (I chose ‘healthy body’ as the most important thing for an astronaut, though I’ll admit I was thinking more in terms of ‘If your body has been exposed to the vacuum of space, then you are not a good astronaut.’)
Brainwashing fun all round! Angie brainwashes Himiko to Atuaism, Kokichi brainwashes Gonta to even-more-stupidity, and Kaito brainwashes Shuichi to serve that great evil which is exercise.
Another black mark for Tenko in the aftermath of Himiko’s brainwashing. About the only thing more lazily stereotypically rubbish than ‘Girl just really hates guys, all guys,’ is ‘Girl just really hates guys, all guys, while also acting exactly like the stereotype of guys she hate.’ Are they done mashing together the worst parts of SDR2 characters yet?
Kaito Momota: One last Free Time. More of the goofball side of Kaito rather than the ultra-competent side, though it’s a competent goofball so I’m cool. It sort of felt weird for the motive to never come up in these conversations with Kaito, but I suppose that would have been tricky to program.
Then it all kicks off. I was fairly sure that the doors were supposed to be lockable, but no, Shuichi just has to go run and get himself caught by Gonta. I’m extraordinarily surprised that the writers chose to have Tenko get caught by Gonta: that seriously infringes on the point of her talent. On the other hand, another nice show of competence by K1-B0. Admittedly, he should have replayed the tapes back when Kokichi had just left so they could try and stop him; on the other hand, letting the bug lesson play out did spare me from the Monokubs’ nighttime announcement, for which I’m very grateful.
I can’t believe all the characters missed that when the Monokub said he was going to give the motives back to their rightful owners, that meant he’d not mix them up this time. It looks like Kokichi’s plan will be a success after all.
I’m 90% certain someone will get murdered during Himiko’s magic show, so I stopped there. I might be wrong, but it’s been foreshadowed enough.
