I have a question about that scene in Love Sea. I saw your post saying we could ask you about Thailand culture and I was wondering what your interpretation of it was since folks on here had a lot to say about colorism. If I'm overstepping, please feel free to ignore me. I'm not meaning to. I'm just curious what the Thai perspective is.
I'd like to start this off by saying that any genuine curiosity is never an overstep to me. In fact, I appreciate anybody who feels like they can come to me to have these types of conversations rather than making any uninformed generalizations. It's why I made that post to begin with 😊😊😊
I have to admit, that I had no intention of watching Love Sea until after it had finished airing... and mostly for the sapphic cut hehe But my partner is watching it as it airs and when I tried to ask for clarification about the scene you were referring to, I found it better for me to just watch the episode in full myself. So I did...
I think I'm going to tackle the colorism culture that exists in Thailand before I analyze anything having to do with the series. My father is black (Haitian) and my mother is Thai... and that resulted in some very unique experiences for me. Please keep that in mind, as these experiences are going to be what inform my cultural viewpoint.
Colorism exists as a systemic prejudice in Thai culture. The beauty industry, the entertainment industry, and even some cultural traditions place a higher value on lighter skin which is seen as 'preferable' and more attractive than darker skin (especially if you are a woman). It ranges anywhere from what I consider to be ignorant colorism... where someone might say something without even realizing it has racist undertones... to blatant racism where words like ไอ้ดำ are thrown in our faces and we are very obviously being judged. For example, a disagreement on political views could easily become about a person's skin color, rather than a comment on the actual discussions being had (i.e. Nam Patcharaporn). Like all countries, these prejudices vary from place to place. I've been involved in very uncomfortable situations (to put it lightly) in Pattaya... but other than familial issues (I won't get in to any of that) I've never really experienced racism in Pathum Wan. Have things gotten better in more recent years? Slightly. But a lot still needs to be done to reverse racist prejudices and promote a more inclusive society. It's why something like The Last Case and Ester Oruche's casting made me very emotional [X]
Now...on to Love Sea: I actually took Mut's remarks on Rak's "pale skin" to be a pointed mini-commentary on colorism (which if that really is the case...well done Mame!) It read to me as... these are the things you value? that you (Rak) put yourself above me (Mut) for? You (Rak) clearly expect me (Mut) to find you appealing and attractive but it's not going to go according to what you think. I could be way off base, but I do so hope that that was its intended purpose because it makes such a small moment feel like a well earned victory to someone in Mut's shoes.

MOONLIGHT CHICKEN – THE THEME SONG
youtube
I think everybody must already know this by now, but just in case – Moonlight Chicken is a series that leans heavily into the Thai-Chinese experience (cultural markers abound – chicken rice, the names like Wen and Li Ming, the joss sticks and offerings, mooncakes and the Mid-Autumn Festival, the temple with its red Chinese characters, so many others).
The reasons are multiple I think; ostensibly this is Director Aof's homage to his childhood in Pattaya (if I'm not mistaken that is, I think I read it somewhere on Reddit?) and if it was a Thai-Chinese childhood then yes it makes sense. But it also dovetails nicely with Thailand's efforts to market its cultural offerings (of which BL is one) to the giant East Asian market, while potentially attracting even more visitors for the important tourism sector.
Anyway, this partly explains why the theme song is sung NOT IN THAI but in Mandarin Chinese. And it's significant for a couple of reasons.
The first – the song is titled "The Moon Represents My Heart" (月亮代表我的心/yuè liang dài biǎo wǒ de xīn), and it is a perfect fit for all the lunar-themed references in this series (or maybe it was their start point? 🤔).
But there's more – the song (originally popularized by the late Teresa Teng in the 1970s) was given an LGBTQ+ twist by the late, great Leslie Cheung when he publicly came out and sang this love song to his partner in a 1997 concert:
Because of this, in some Chinese-majority areas (I'm thinking Taiwan and Hong Kong, not sure about Singapore) the song has now become an iconic queer love song. And this is why Mile and Apo also sang it during the Taipei leg of the KinnPorsche World Tour (Taiwan being the first state in Asia to legalize gay marriage).
It's not just any old song – it fits the themes of this show perfectly, and I'm hopeful that other aspects of Moonlight Chicken will also show that they came about from the same deliberate and deeply thoughtful approach to the creative process.
Can't wait for the next episode! 💖

I really wish this ask goes off anon crossing my fingers on this one. The asks game is so nice i feel like Im huddled in a blanket with all you girlies (gn ofc) as we share stories-
I got a few story times, buckle in girlies I am gonna start rambling-
4 years ago I went to bali and there was this boy from New Zealand who had little freckles and ginger hair and a cutie pookie face. I met him at the hotel pool where we talked for quite long and then we said goodbyes and he had the prettiest smile ever and I never saw him again cause I left bali the very next day. If u see this I had a small instant crush on you and I still think of you occasionally lolz. (rizzing up a hi heheh)
also as I went to Thailand just a few days ago, I had a tour guide in Pattaya who was literally a kenjiro tsuda (nanami's va) lookalike, idek do you call that falling in love but I was shamelessly watching him drive cause that was attractive WHAT and he was waiting for us, wearing sunglasses and was smoking when we returned from the tour place to go home and I felt the butterflies MY GOD. Then I got to know he has a son and I felt like a homewrecker thank goodness I didn't see him ever again cause I was so ashamed lmaooo.
I am talking so much but this one is spooky special- Just a week or two ago, I had this dream of a zombie apocalypse and it was so scary. usually these movies don't really scare me much but in the dream I was like living through it and it was pretty vivid like blowing up doors to fight zombies, and there were even like sensors that would go off if a zombie was nearby and my sister was there in my dream too and I was saving her from this bloody zombie and then i woke up sweating and it was probably dawn so when I woke up I heard footsteps in the dining room and I froze and got the biggest scare in years. turns out it was my mom who came for a glass of water and prayers. Like girlie you scared the sleep out of me hello? the way i still remember parts of this dream. shit was spooky but it spices my life lmaoo
soo yeah these are at the top of my head i got a fair few but Imma keep it short with these 3 luv yall cant wait to hear from so many of yall too
hi sami!! welcome to the sleepover ✨
join the sleepover! send in an ask sharing/asking anything you want!
omg the way you still remember the boy from 4 years ago ajsnsjsnsjsh 😭 he does sound cute tho!
and thailand!! how was that for you?? & finding a kenjiro lookalike omg 😭 but i completely get u when u feel embarrassed cos… yeah 😭
and ur dream omg!! i’d surprised too if i woke up to noise while that was happening omg 😭 sometimes i get rlly vivid dreams too 😭 but my dreams are a bit more weird i think? than outright spooky! scary dreams for me are when they feel so true to life that i find myself thinking within the dream if i’m actually dreaming? (idk if that makes sense! almost like i’m looking for markers within the dream to let me know that i’m dreaming 😭)
thanks for dropping by to share sami!!! 🫶🏻
