➼ a/n: modern au, kinda ooc levi. i just wanted to take y’all on a small rollercoaster ride of emotions, is all.

the atmosphere in the apartment feels heavy. tense. like the room was getting smaller and the walls were slowly closing in.

there’s a weight on levi’s chest, and though his words were chosen carefully, he doesn’t know how to lessen its sting. “i don’t know if i still love you,” he murmurs. he doesn’t make eye contact, too afraid of what he was going to see. “we should end this— whatever... this is.”

she doesn’t reply. not that he expected her to, of course. what would be the appropriate response to i don’t love you?

but then he glances back at her, and she’s staring at him with wide eyes, the same ones levi fell in love with the first time they met his. he feels like a monster for what he was about to do. because even now, even when he was telling her she had to pack her bags and leave the home they once shared, she still looked at him like he was the world. with beautiful eyes full of love and adoration as she tried to understand his words.

and honestly, levi would be lying if he said his own heart doesn’t hurt. he could feel the familiar dull ache and throb of heartbreak in his chest.

because he still loved her too.

their time spent togethet was short, but that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t value the precious memories they’ve made. of cooking dinner, her stealing occasional bites before it even got off the stove. of watching movies, cuddled up on the couch. of him working, while she slept with her head in his lap. of falling asleep next to each other, finding comfort in each other’s presence.

but some things... some things just weren’t meant to be.

“we gave this relationship everything we had, didn’t we?” his eyes are staring off into space and a chuckle escapes his lips, but his laugh is humorless— empty, and it feels as empty as the cavity in his chest when he’s finally forced to come to terms with the truth. “we tried so hard to make it work... but we’re just not meant for each other.”

even though she doesn’t say it out loud, levi knows that she saw through his facade of indifference; knows that she could see the turmoil, the storm brewing behind his irises. he knows what she was thinking, and it hurt him all the more.

i love you too, levi.

“i’m sorry,” he says. “i hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me.” warm palms gently grasp her face, tilting her head down so he could place a small, delicate kiss to her forehead. his lips start to tingle.

no, really. they start to tingle.

and he sighs. “y/n,” he calls out to his fiancé. the golden labrador in front of him wags her tail at the mention of your name; the name of her other owner. well, soon to be ex-owner. “can you get my allergy meds?”

“wha— levi, did you kiss the dog’s forehead again?!”

“yes.”

“you know you’re allergic!”

“i don’t care. four-eyes texted; they’ll be here in ten to adopt her and i’ll be damned if i let my allergies get in the way of goodbye.”
