Eren really loves Mikasa? I questioned myselves.
It was always clear to me: Mikasa loves Eren, but Eren has no feelings for Mikasa. So I was surprised when the end came. As some have told me that Eren loves Mikasa, that wouldn't be anything new. You would have seen that if I went looking for fans of the ship who might have talked about their relationship and this blog caught my eye. It's in German, but I'll quote it in English. So enjoy reading.
Romance in Attack on Titan usually takes a backseat. Despite this, there were romantic undertones to various relationships within the manga.
Most of them enjoy the luxury of subtext and are far more complex to pigeonhole. So popular debates among fans are: Does Eren like Mikasa? Will Eren marry Historia?
SPOILER ALERT: Manga spoilers ahead. Go ahead, they're worth it! (Don't listen to me!)
Yes, Eren loves Mikasa as she is definitely the most important woman in his life after his mother. Despite this, Eren and Historia are able to marry - more out of duty and obligation than love.
2. Mikasa and Eren
For years, no-sayers have reduced Eren and Mikasa's relationship to one of unrequited love.
On the surface, it is very easy to fall prey to such a thought. Mikasa obviously seems to be in love with Eren since he protects her from the robbers. and Eren hasn't shown similar affection as in the countermovement.
The countermovement? I assume that what is meant is Historia. I find it very funny that on the one hand the writer writes, that Anti's think very superficially about Eren's relationship to Mikasa. But then admits that Eren shows more feelings towards Historia then her. But good. Let's read on.
For the first few years, Eren seems to resent Mikasa's maternal nature and hopes to move away from her overbearing shadow. While Mikasa just wants to be close to an unsuspecting Eren.
No. That is not completely right. Mikasa doesn't want Eren to put himself in danger and then maybe die. That's why she tries to either slow him down or protect him. And yes. Eren is annoyed about this.
This is also one of the reasons why this pairing or Mikasa is so unpalatable to some. Mikasa has total tunnel vision when it comes to Eren. She acts selfishly, puts others in danger and seems to only care about Eren's well-being. She completely ignores others. It becomes clear again in the dream, where she runs away with Eren and they spend his last few years together. Later more.
I. Mikasa's meaning
However, the manga also cements Mikasa and Armin as the most important people in Eren's life, especially when it is revealed that the Attack Titan's heirs are given access to the heirs' past and future memories.
This fact makes perfect sense when we consider Eren Kruger's quote to Grisha. "To save Mikasa and Armin".
It is later revealed that Eren was largely the reason for Grisha's actions to align them with a preordained event or what Eren's plan is. Therefore, it is very likely that Eren's drive is to protect Mikasa.
The emphasis here is on Mikasa AND ARMIN. But not only the two are important for Eren, but also the rest of his friends. If Krüger had only mentioned Mikasa, that would have been different. But even here it is not apparent that Mikasa had a special status by Eren. As a friend and adoptive sister, yes. As a lover, no.
II. Does Eren hate Mikasa?
It's Chapter 112, which oddly makes you reconsider its dynamic when Eren claims that he always hated Mikasa.
Eren claims that Mikasa's affections stem from her Ackerman clan awakening power that makes him her primary focus of affection.
I never believed that he really hated her either. To me, it looked like Eren was trying to get Mikasa to stop clinging to him and move forward.
Again, on the surface level, it seems like he hates her. But in chapters 120 and 121, Eren's motivations are finally revealed, and we see a tender or forlorn expression on Eren's face as he sees the memory of him wrapping the scarf around Mikasa.
His facial expression varies between neutral and sad, I would say. But by now he must have understood that she loves him. Of course you can be sad at this point, if you know that you have to leave this person.
This proves that Eren wants to free Mikasa and obviously doesn't really hate her, no, his motives are driven by a deep sense of love. One who is always looking out for her and doing what is best for her.
III. Eren's true feelings
Hajime Isayama claims that Mikasa's character development is her breakup with Eren. The scarf is a symbol of their protective relationship - Eren previously claimed he would wrap the scarf around her as many times as she wants, revealing that he always wants to protect her.
In chapter 123 we get a glimpse of Mikasa's perspective and she recounts an incident that defines their relationship. Before going rogue, Eren asks Mikasa, "What am I to you?". Eren's facial expression at the moment reflects how vulnerable he is feeling at the moment.
Yes. He's vulnerable. If Mikasa loves him, it will be twice as painful if he has to leave her. After all, he knows he's going to die. That's why he later wants to get her to break up with him. But that doesn't mean he loves her. But that means that she is very important to him.
In response, Mikasa nervously says he's family. She will check later if it was the right answer.
Isayama then shows a plaque specifically for Mikasa and Eren, who are sleeping with their heads touching after a night of drinking with the Survey Corps.
The Survey Corps' broader panel sleeps is tailored just for Mikasa, Eren, and Armin. This emphasis is not useless. Isayama - who doesn't usually show such moments - tries to convey the meaning of their relationship in this chapter.
We know that Isayama probably intended it that way too. But I still only see three friends sleeping head to head and the last moment together with Eren.
This clearly shows that Eren loves Mikasa - just not in a way that teenage romance defines. But as a love that drives you, a love that requires mental support, a love that transcends the trivia of puppy love.
IV. My Judgment
Eren and Mikasa have always tried to understand each other, but in this moment they reach an agreement. Mikasa's confession would have made it even harder for Eren to fulfill his duty. Therefore, her answer was the correct answer.
Eren and Mikasa's relationship was defined by their need to protect each other from the cruelties of the world. they really love each other
Isayama was always against the idea of destiny; Therefore, it is unlikely to be an endgame. But whether they end up together is trivial to the story - it's what they share that stays holistic.
Their relationship has a deep complexity that combines family, love, mutual support, duty, sacrifice and development.
3. Eren and Historia
Eren's relationship with Historia was a major focus in the argument against Eren's love for Mikasa. There's a possibility of a love blossom between Eren and Historia, and it's not a far-fetched idea either.
Eren and Historia are two people who resent their role as "hero" or "good girl". They seem to have good chemistry and honesty that comes from their circumstances.
If it's anyone who really knows Eren's plan, other than Floch, it might be Historia. Both share the pain of their predetermined fate. Eren and Historia begin to bond after their kidnapping and then fans noticed the huge potential between the two.
Eren and Historia share a similar fate and, according to Isayama, also have the same character. Also, it was Historia that saved Eren when he was about to give himself up completely. That's why the ship has so much potential.
Their gradual friendship even manages to arouse jealousy in Mikasa. However, the relationship between Eren and Historias reflects a friendship between two intimates. That's not to say there can't be romance between them in the future - both serve as perfect candidates for potential love.
To define it more precisely. Mikasa got jealous, because Eren complimented Historia and she blushed. It seemed like the two were flirting with each other.
At present, however, it is unlikely that they would treat each other in this way. It's not Historia that drives Eren, nor is his love for her that eclipses anything else for him. She remains merely his possible partner in crime.
I'm sorry but I have to laugh. First of all I want to know where Mikasa drives Eren? As I explained earlier, she actually slows him down. And if his love for Mikasa eclipses everything else, why didn't he run away with her like she wished he would? This is complete nonsense. sorry
No. Eren could very well have carried out Zeke's plan, which was about keeping the enemies at bay with the Bricktitans until Paradise had upgraded its weapons enough. But that would have meant sacrificing Historia and he didn't want that. Because of her pregnancy, which was part of HIS plan, Zeke's plan was delayed and ultimately prevented. He basically became a mass murderer, because he didn't want to sacrifice Historia. And despite everything, Historia supported him in his plan. This sentence can be related so well to Historia and not at all to Mikasa... So she's trustworthy and understands why Eren is acting like that. Even if she definitely doesn't like it. In contrast to Mikasa, who thinks very much about herself and her happiness, Historia understands Eren's feelings and supports him in his project. Even if that means letting someone make her pregnant, even though she doesn't want it. You can see it on her face, before and during the pregnancy, that she doesn't want Farmer-Kun's child at all. And as we know, Historia is also in love with Eren, but doesn't show it like Mikasa does. What I think is that Eren doesn't really care who loves him. He would return love anytime. If Historia had clearly told him that she loves him, the scenery could have been the same, only with Historia instead of Mikasa. That's what I think.
I. Historia's pregnancy
The revelation of Historia's pregnancy and the final panel of a man holding a baby seem to have given more power to her shippers.
The military's plan to have Historia eat Zeke is the main motivation behind Historia's pregnancy. In all honesty, it's very likely that the father is Eren and not the farmer, but that doesn't mean that Eren and Historia are romantically involved.
The events that have transpired so far have shown that Eren is ready to do his duty against all odds. Historia's pregnancy is a semblance of this duty, preventing Zeke from feeding her.
There is no concrete evidence that Eren actually shows romantic feelings towards Historia and vice versa. It seems to be an exaggeration of their great respect and admiration for each other.
Again, Eren may eventually marry Historia if the baby is actually his, but it's unlikely to be for love.
Yes. The pregnancy took place to thwart Zeke's plan. And later we found out that the kid was Farmer-kun's. I think it's a shame, because I wished that part of Eren would live on. But good. It probably shouldn't be.
I wonder what kind of duty you're talking about. It certainly wasn't Eren's DUTY to become a CRIMINAL. He chose this path to protect his friends. And the point Eren might love Historia isn't the kid. He complimented her, she saved him, he doesn't want to sacrifice her. They share similar fates, they are of the same breed. Eren confides in her his plan. These are the points on which the EreHisu ship is based.
II. The last panel
The final panel of the man holding a baby shocked many fans.
Two theories surround it - One underscores Eren's possibility of marrying Historia. The first theory is that Grisha is holding Eren and telling him he is free, which agrees with Carla's quote that he is special because he was born into the world.
The non-linear sequence of events and the importance of memories may very well allow Attack on Titan to end with a memory of the past - Eren as a baby.
The second theory is that Eren is holding his and Historia's baby after achieving his goal. It's entirely possible.
However, the absence of Eren and Historias' moments, particularly the ones leading up to her pregnancy and her absence from this panel, clearly shows that she doesn't matter as much in Eren's life as fans might hope.
From the final chapters it's obvious that the woman in Eren's mind is, and probably always will be, Mikasa.
I've never seen Eren with a child there. It just looked way too much like Grisha with baby Eren.
I don't really know what could be meant by moments here? The fragments of memories? Otherwise, you could assume that these moments were omitted specifically to mislead the reader or because it would not have been relevant to the story. But that doesn't mean she wasn't important to Eren. And when it comes to the fragments...let's count:
Unidentifiable dudes (probably Armin and Mikasa as children) 1 birds 1 Historia 2 Annie 1 airship 1 Connie and Sasha 1 Falco 1 Levi's Special Squadt 1 Frieda Reiss 1 Strange Soldier Pack 1 Grisha 1 basement key 1 burning houses 1 Mikasa 1 Reiner 1 knife 1 Armin 1 Woman with laundry (Carla?) 1 food 1 the Jew Boy 1 Jean 1 Grisha's sister 1 jumping people 1 Horses 1 Levi 1 Hange 1 Undefinable other fragments 3
If the two people on the far right panel in the top corner are Mikasa and Armin, then Historia, Mikasa, and Armin are tied at Eren. If they aren't, Historia would have more relevance to him than Mikasa. And if we go by the size of the fragments, Mikasa might do better, but then I wonder why the panel of a Jewish boy is larger than that of his mother or Armin.
Reading the importance of a person from the memory fragments...I think it's stupid.
Unfortunately, it's still not clear to me why Eren was in love with Mikasa and from when. In particular, the scenes where Mikasa tried to kiss him and he practically turned away to attack the Grinning Titan stuck with me. Most notably, he only arrives 10 years later and asks her if she loves him. That doesn't seem to have mattered to him until now. otherwise he would have asked sooner. When he wants to make sure that Zeke isn't into him, he reacts quite emotionlessly to his answer.
Oh well. What the hell.
If someone has stronger arguments to put forward than this person, please get in touch and explain it to me. Thanks.

The Fall Of Mikasa's Character (3/?)
SNK Endgame posts (4/?)
So wait...
Eren says the Founder's power made it so that there's no past and future and it kept messing with his head...
But that isn't the Founder's power.
It's supposed to be the Attack Titan's power.
This chapter literally retcons the rules it setted chapters before it.
The Founder's power has nothing to do with Time, it is the Attack Titan.
These are the Abilities of the Founder: Titan creation, Titan behavioral control, memory and body manipulation of Subjects Of Ymir (except Ackerman but the last chapter retconned that too since Mikasa speaks about "THAT DAY WHEN EREN CAME TO VISIT US") telepathic communication with Subjects of Ymir.
Moreover, how come Eren said time messed up with his head when he was literally able to mindplay Zeke in 120 into thinking he was in control of the memories while it was him who controlled the memories in the first place hence in control of his power through time?
Also Frieda didn't know about it and she had the Founder, Grisha suspects that it's because of Karl Fritz's will but he still says that every titan is unique in it's own way. If the Founder is capable of travelling through time, the Attack Titan is no more unique.
And if the Founder is capable to travel through time, DON'T YOU THINK A CERTAIN KARL FRITZ WOULD HAVE USED IT TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING GOES ACCORDINGLY TO HOW HE WANTED IT TO HAPPEN ?
Moreover The Attack Titan doesn't travel through time. It travels through memories big difference. So how come is Eren capable to go back to memories of people who do not have the Attack Titan, nor the Founder.
Also talking about the so called Lelouch plan of Eren.
Eren didn't have all the memories, how come is he able to make sure of that supposed end point with Mikasa will happen? After all in 121, Grisha gave up at the last second, it's Eren who had to influence him.
If anything the memories he saw could just change since even in the past things needed to be influenced. After all, in 134, he threw rocks at them while they were flying in mid air and the plane could've just exploded with everyone inside and all of his plan could've fell apart.
If Eren wanted his friends to pull a Lelouch, why did he put them in all of these dangerous situations ? So at times Eren can do something like in 131, but when Hange is about to get killed, he doesn't do anything ? It all seems too convenient to me. Was it him that send Falco the dream than ? Or is it something else ?
You can't have Eren not controlling his powers but able to in certain cases because "It's fate" and pull a Lelouch with so much limited information that he has when he himself doesn't have all the memories and doesn't understand most of them.
So we can manipulate the past but we can't change the future ?
In that case if the Attack Titan was striving for freedom ever since it existed. Does that mean Eren literally influenced all the events of the story including past wars ? Why does the Attack Titan strive for freedom when they are not even persecuted like during the Eldian Regime ?
If Eren has the power to influence the past, why doesn't he influence past events that created the whole mess between the Eldians and the world in that case ?
People are going to say it's Ymir, but the Attack Titan always refused to obey the King's Order and Ymir was devoted and "in love" with him so it can't be her ?
The Attack Titan's Owners eye colors changes when they get the Titan and ressemble those of Eren. Just like Frieda when she is taken by Karl Fritz's will.
But here, we see Eren's (and Grisha's titan) with two different eye color, pre-timeskip and post-timeskip. It seems more...translucid but Eren didn't have the Full Founder's power during Liberio so did Eren influence itself in titan form. If so, if it is him, why has Eren been shown to be afraid of his own will ? Why did Eren physically change to look more and more like his Titan ? Shouldn't he just look like himself ?
Also Eren had the Founder pre-timeskip, why his eyes changed colors during Liberio and not during the pre-timeskip ?
After all in one flashback when the Volunteers arrive on the island, Eren still has a semblance of pre-timeskip eyes. But is starting to turn into post timeskip eyes.
So does that mean Eren influenced everything into the story or is it just it's will that's controlling people ?
By the way how come their eyes changes to those of Eren, if they literally existed before him ? Did Eren sent his DNA to the past ?
So does that means Eren influenced wars even at times when Eldians weren't persecuted, killed Faye, killed Carla just so because he wanted to do genocide ?
Eren says it's because he had an endgame which was Mikasa's choice, than says it's because the Founder messed with his head and than he says it's because he wanted to do it. And let's not even count past chapters and how Eren's motivation changed like a hundred times.
Why doesn't he tell anybody about what he saw during the ceremony in chapter 90 ?
He seemed afraid by the Rumbling but still wants to do it ? Because he has to ?
So Eren can manipulate 2000 years of history but isn't capable of saving his own mother from a titan he already controlled before ? Because yet again, it's "fate." But Eren already hated the titans before his mother died, both in chapter 1 and 73, we learn that Eren already wants to go outside and is mad at the titans for stealing his freedom. His mother doesn't need to die since he is already angry anyway.
If Eren doesn't go with Zeke's plan, Zeke doesn't suggest to retake the founder during the meeting at the start of the Marley arc and the Liberio event doesn't happen.
That man manipulated the whole conflict. If Willy doesn't die (he says that to Magath), most of the world won't believe him and therefore an international attack on Paradis is very likely not to happen. They knew they were being spied upon and that they were going to get attacked.
Eren says he wants his friends to be heroes but half of them died and are forced to kill many people including innocents during Liberio including Armin who blew up a whole port.
Nothing is consistent in this story anymore.
Eren cannot be able to manipulate possibly hundreds of people and titan shifters before him and change the past to how he wants it (like in 121) than be unable to stop Dina, a titan who he was able to control earlier because the Founder messed up with his head and time when 121 proves otherwise.
So Eren is capable of precisely erase the memories of all his friends (including an Ackermam) in the blink of an eye but isn't able to save his own mom ?
All of this speaks "The power works when the author wants it to work".
By the way, if The Attack Titan only travels through memories of past owners, how come Eren was able to sent a memory to himself in chapter 1 when he didn't have the Founder nor the Attack Titan ?
Also how can he receive that memory from the future when the Memory Wipe of Karl Fritz stops any memory that has something to do with the outside world or something he doesn't like ? This was shown with Eren who had headaches about his father injecting him the serum but couldn't remember it because of that Memory Wipe.
Why would Eren send that memory to the past ? To change something but what ? He wanted to do the Rumbling ? Oh Of course I forgot his thoughts were inconsistent but he is able to manipulate a titan through 2000 years of History including his own father.
It was with Kruger who only had the Attack Titan that we were shown you can receive memories from the future. Kruger doesn't even know whose memories belong to and why would Eren sent a memory there when none of them know who Mikasa and Armin are ?
Also if Eren manipulated everything, how come Grisha who lost his first wife a few hours before he met Carla fell in love with her after seeing her for the first time? Did Eren influence his own father to be in love with his mother so he could be born just to destroy 80% of the world ?
I mean he does exactly what Kruger told him to do, he loves someone while the guy lost his first wife just a few hours before that moment.
Grisha should be a little more troubled by this.
Also VERY IMPORTANT!
Why does Grisha give Eren the Founder and the Attack Titan when he saw the Rumbling and asked Zeke to stop Eren ?
Why did Eren wanted Zeke to see that memory ? What was important in that memory ? Why is it never brought up again ?
Why would Grisha tell to Eren that if he wanted to save his friends, he'll have to control that "power" when Eren literally influenced him in the past and he saw that Eren got the Full power of the Founder in the future and unleashed the Rumbling ?
What power was he talking about ?
Why did he give Eren the Titan when he knew what he was about to do and didn't agree with it ?
Did Eren influence him but why would he tell Eren to control this power when he already does in the future ?
What was the point of that ?
I'm really starting to question whether this was Isayama's original ending anymore.

Empathy and the own nature
“We are the same.”
Up to this point I just can’t see Eren being controlled. For shifters, it’s needed something to anchor their roles as holders of 9 titan’s power. For Eren it was in chapter 120 and 121 when he discovered part his own nature. Probably most of the shifters were never controlled but showed an empathy, a shared feeling or goal that was already there before. Maybe a similarity with Ymir the founder. After all, every SoY is part of her body.
The last opening gave me the idea to play with this both opposed sides: creation and destruction, the Founder and the Attack titan and their previous shifters, and I think their connection is relevant to know Eren’s role right know.
The founder
As far as we know, the founder can be related to the command “I create and preceive, I rather die and sacrifice myself”. It reseambles the way Ymir created everything but also sacrificed herself, accepted and perpetuated the system. The roots and stem of this civilization. The part of her that is responsible for everyone and can’t be free... and also the part that blames itself for everything. “The guilt is inside”.
When Zeke surpassed the vow, the relation between shifters and this part of Ymir became evident.
After comparing Zeke, Frieda and Uri, the difference gets clearer. It’s about their own nature. A natural way to be that echoes the will of someone else. While Frieda and Uri were subjected to the vow, because their natures couldn’t accept the blame on themselves and their people, Zeke was able to break the vow. Probably it wasn’t just because he knew how to do it but because of his own nature to accept the blame and extinction.
If we consider the 145th King’s ideology (“We better never existed in this world”) and Zeke’s, it’s easy to interpret that both were alike by nature. Zeke was showing there his own way to see the world out of his father’s indoctrination. Aplying this to Frieda and Uri, both were forced to act according this ideology, they weren’t fully agree with.
The founder’s command is in the end:
ACCEPT DEATH, BE A SCAPEGOAT
I do believe Rod was saying the truth there. He couldn’t because his selfish mindset fixated to life would have clashed with the founder’s mindset and purpose. Maybe his strong will would have been a problem too.
It’s also safe to say that Historia would have had to face the same destiny as her sister. Historia learnt from the very beginning what it was to be hated since birth. By nature, her mindset wasn’t in tune to accept this command.
And this is what I call indoctrination:
Until this day I ask myself if Frieda was preparing her for something.
For the moment when she would be asked to inherit the founder...
And Ymir just came as a redeemer to tell her it was wrong to try to be a good girl like that and tip the scales in favor of one specific outcome...?
Although these characteristics among others (like the jaws-sacrifice) are important parts of Ymir’s soul... which is the most prominent? The one that mantains the system or the one entrusted with the mission to put an end to it? And why none of them is balanced at all?
After the enounter in paths, the most prominent now is...
The Attack titan
This is the part that opposes the founder. The destruction, the search for freedom. “The guilt is outside, I want and deserve to exist”.
To say that Grisha did the same mistake as Ymir back then. Everyone was searchig for freedom, defying a world that doesn’t allow it.
Back then, Ymir sought freedom for the pigs, Krüger had to see his family being murdered and couldn’t do anything, Grisha sought freedom for her sister, Eren had to see her mother die. The whole cycle.
One part wishes for freedom for others, another revenge for the loss. Impotence and frustration. Everyone carries the accumulated burden of those moments.
As for this part of her, even revenge... the result is a intent of redeeming not this mistake she did but also the whole story. When thinking about the big amount of sacrifices done for this, it’s important to think that the only thing that matters to them right now is to put an end to the way things are.
And I rather don’t dig too much into the consequences of summing every single shifter wanting the same that should be like feeling the same torture over and over again in different times, places and with different people. It’s like loosing hope over and over again with no mercy. And also the empathy and compassion resulted of feeling that you and everyone else was condemned to go through the same: freedom, revenge and destruction.
“I didn’t do any of that, and neither did Faye.”
For this to be solved, Krüger made sacrifices and suffered because of the mission. It’s clear he didn’t enjoyed doing so, he had to no matter what he wanted as individual. So did Eren on what matters to him. As individual, he had a wish about his friends. As a small part of a whole complex story bigger than anything, he had the duty to keep moving forward, his nature was in tune too. Something that probably echoed Ymir’s wish as their natures are partly alike.
But both probably wanted this.
Because...
...all in all, her will is outside the paths, disperced and being represented by every shifter. Maybe this is the reason of this sick unbalance.

Mom, it may be just me but I feel sth's off about AOT these days bc Isayama has just been focusing on killing and eliminating all the heros of the story left and right. I feel like the story's theme has just turned upside down. Sth doesn't feel right for me. Sure, I wait for the chaps every month, but when I compare the plot to the previous arcs I feel like sth's lost. It doesn't have to be-
(Same anon) - about my personal opinion of course. Many ppl love the current events and I understand that AOT is not all about rainbows and sunshines but the fact that cruelty and despair are just overpowering hopes and dreams is turning into sth clichè and repetitive. I’m not here to judge the story of course. I still love AOT, and this is just my personal feelings. Maybe I am disappointed a bit, which is why I came to you to vent. You know how to make me feel better with your ideas.
Attack on Titan isn’t rainbows and sunshine, and you’re correct that there is cruelty and despair at almost every turn, but what keeps me going is that no matter how dark a chapter is, there is always reason for hope.
In the 30 or so minutes since you sent me this ask, I went back through the last 10 chapters of the manga to show you what I mean.
Chapter 111: Mikasa protecting Gabi and Mr. Braus’s speech about forgiveness.
Chapter 112: Hange’s care of Falco, Armin’s kindness to Gabi, Nicolo seeking redemption, and Levi remembering his former comrades.
Chapter 113: Shadis being willing to endure a brutal beating in order to protect his young trainees.
Chapter 114:Grandma Jaeger and the cat book.
Chapter 115:Hange’s defiance and fearless determination to save Levi
Chapter 116:Pieck’s confidence in the future and love for her friends
Chapter 117:Magath hugging Gabi and treating her like the child she is.
Chapter 118:Pixis’s resolve and Nile protecting Falco
Chapter 119:Colt’s love for Falco and Porco giving his life for Reiner
Chapter 120:The glimpses of beauty in Eren’s memory shard and the proof that Grisha’s loved his family
Chapter 121:The scarf scene revisited, Grisha’s refusal to kill children, and Zeke finally learning he was loved.
I hope this helps anon. The Attack of Titan world is dark but it’s never entirely without hope or optimism. No matter what, there is always beauty in the midst of the cruelty.
Thanks for the ask. Take care

Sooo I kinda don’t understand now lol after this recent chapter, whose the real bad guy? Lol because Grisha said eren’s future is “terrifying”
Are there actually “bad guys” in SnK though? Like in the sense of “full villains”?
Ever since I started watching SnK, the Titans didn’t really strike me as the “bad guys” because I saw them as miserable over-sized zombies with no real capability of thinking and measuring their actions. Were they even aware of what they were doing? Were they hurting humans because they wanted to? Not really. They ended up being people turned into Titans against their will, trapped in some sort of never-ending nightmare unless they ended up eating a shifter to get a second chance in life or until someone killed them, which was very tragic.
When the corresponding reveals about Annie, Reiner and Bertholdt as Titan Shifters happened, I also couldn’t see them really as plain “bad guys” because I was sure their reasons weren’t so simple. While some people on Tumblr and on other social media demonized them years ago, I always saw the warriors as victims of their circumstances. They were obviously child soldiers that were manipulated by knowing adults in my eyes. I was sure about that way before we knew anything about Marley. It turned out that they were indeed victims that ended up victimizing other innocent people. Once we got the full picture, we learned they were Marley’s tools and were seen as war heroes for fighting the “devils” - that happened to be other Eldians like themselves, their own people. They were brainwashed into thinking they were doing humanity a favor… just look at Gabi, the best example in this case.
Zeke is another example of someone that in first place appeared as some sort of plain “bad guy” for the fandom because he killed some beloved characters in gruesome ways and betrayed his parents at an early age. Then we learned his backstory and how damaging it was for him that his parents, especially Grisha, didn’t treat him like a child but like a tool in order to reach their goals. He was a hurt child that later got encouraged by another adult - that he saw as an actual parental figure - to exterminate his own race, just because he wished he wasn’t been born… Now he thinks he would be doing a good deed by stealing Eldians their right to reproduce and, hence, condemning them to get extinct as a race. I don’t agree with Zeke’s goals, but can I see him as a real “bad guy”? Nah. I actually pity him for thinking in the way he does. He really thinks he’ll be sparing Eldians from suffering and saving everyone else, when the outside world with or without Eldians will still also suffer for one reason or another.
Eren and the rest of the Walldians were victims of RBA, Zeke and Marley, plus victims of the offenses done by their ancestors that led to the attack to the Walls. At the beginning we only saw Eren and the rest of the Walldians reacting to these circumstances, and we rooted for their survival. Later, we learned the rest of the world wants them dead, extinct forever, because they only see them as monsters and not as human beings that have the minimum right to live. They need to be erased from the map for the well being of everyone else, or so they say (cough Zeke cough).
Eren was a victim that ended up victimizing innocent people, just like RBA did, and I guess we all can agree on that. Now we found out that he started time-traveling and manipulating some of the things that had happened and that led to what is happening in the present timeline. We saw in chapter 121 that he manipulated his dad into murdering the Reiss family, and that it seemingly happened way before (these paradoxes can be a bit confusing, huh?) he ended up killing innocent civilians and children as collateral damage back in Liberio…
For about a couple of years we’ve been denied Eren’s POV and his actions have been turning more and more confusing for both other characters and us, readers. We’re finally getting some answers and exposition, but we still don’t know what exactly his plan is. Is it something as straight-forward and extreme as the rumbling? Is it something more complex but still as terrifying as that? Is it a mix of things? Is it something we haven’t even really thought about yet?
All I know is that the rest of the world wants Eldians dead and gone for good, and that Eren doesn’t want that. Does he, in exchange, wants the rest of the world gone for good? We still have to see. If by stopping the genocide of his people he genocides the rest of the humans that aren’t “his people”… then lmao. I love Eren but his “if other people are going to steal my freedom, I’m going to steal theirs” doesn’t rub me the right way atm, because honestly, what’s the point of freedom if you just go and steal other people’s freedom? How does that make you any better or different than the ones that steal or try to steal your own freedom? Nelson Mandela once said “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”
I’ve always rooted for Eren as a character and for his fighting for freedom, simply because it’s beautiful to fight for a basic right. Oppression must be fighted and never accepted, so I’d certainly feel upset if he for real just goes ahead and finally, and completely, disposes of anyone that doesn’t think like him or that isn’t a Walldian. If he did that, then I guess he might end up being crowned as the indisputable ultimate SnK “bad guy” (?) by the fandom.
Anyway, it’s important to remember that this manga has never been black and white on its depictions of the story and its characters, which are way more complex than that. This isn’t a child tale. So, just like I did with the Titans, RBA and other characters, I can’t say yeah mate, Eren is definitely the “bad guy” of the story, because it’s not that simple and nothing is when it comes to SnK. I’ve witnessed the development of his character, his story and his relationships, his hardships and everything. I’ve seen both his soft side and his cruel side. I’ve seen how much he cares about the people he loves, his friends. I’ve seen how his face still pulls out emotion when seeing his mother and his father holding him as a baby in the memories of chapter 120, and how much he got absorbed by the sweet moment when he gave Mikasa his scarf in the memory he was witnessing in 121. I wasn’t blind to his pain when Sasha died and how against he was at the prospect of Historia being turned into a breeding machine. I know how desperate he was when the first Levi’s Special Operation Squad was crashed by Annie, and how upset he was when he realized that Annie was indeed the Female Titan. I remember how much it broke him to see Armin on the verge of dying after he sacrificed himself in their battle against Bert. He cared deeply about them all and I think he still does, even behind that cold mask he’s been trying to wear and his hurtful words in chapter 112.
So, like I said before, we have no idea what his exact plan is yet, neither we know exactly what he has or not done through the timeskip and through his time-travel hack. However, it doesn’t matter how hard he tries to play the cold-blooded motherfucker, his feelings will always betray him in one way or another (we’ve already seen it in the past months, he also wasn’t happy after telling his dad to murder the Reiss family and didn’t enjoy it). He’s too intense to keep a poker face for too long, and he has a heart too big for it to be fully tainted by the mere “bad guy” role.
Whatever happens, whatever Eren ends up doing, for me he would still be Eren, just Eren. Whether I like how things turn out or not, that’s another matter. I’m here still hoping for this whole journey to be worth it in the end.

The Experience of Reading Attack on Titan/Shingeki no Kyojin Chapters 120-121
Hajime Isayama: Yo dawg I know the series is winding down but bust this: Let’s talk about how there’s this one titan shifter can psionically enter the minds of their ancestors and descendants, essentially leaping through time to see the future or past and even communicating directly with those relatives. But they can only do it when they’re dead and in the mystical Celtic Titan afterlife, homes! It’s like super-Irish and only Titan shifters get to go there and only ONE of them can do the mental time-trippin’ like WHOOOOAA, I am seein’ some SHIT.
But nononono holdup hold up hold the fuck up, man. Like, fate is immutable anyway so they can only influence people to follow events exactly as they’re already inevitably gonna play out so... so, like, it’s super tragic because it’s ultimately circular, you feel me?! So it’s like... all this metaphysical wild shit is totally fuckin’ pointless, Brosephs and Broannas!

Microanalysis 121 Attack on Titan
Okay, let's try talking about the new chapter. Beware of spoilers, guys.
...
Eren, what are you doing goddamit’?
First of all it is amazing how Isayama is able to completely overturn the position of the three key characters on which our attention is now placed: Eren, Grisha and Zeke. Eren is our shonen hero, the character who leads the story, the savior. Zeke is the bad guy, the villain, ruthless, cruel, practically devoid of empathy except that necessary to deceive and backstab his former allies. Grisha is the father of both and before his backstory at Marley we saw him a bit like the man with a great responsibility and with the fate of the world on his shoulders. From chapter 120 everything changes. Eren returns to permeate that vengeance aura and begins to replace Zeke, loses expression and all that remains in his face are expressions of fury or extreme coldness. As in a sort of principle of communicating vessels, Eren empties and Zeke fills up: we see a whole range of emotions that we have never seen, even during the most agitated battle scenes. This is the real Zeke, a boy who had to undress his own humanity when he was just a child, who forced himself to hate a terrible father like Grisha but never quite succeeded. In 121 Grisha embraces him and tells him that he loves him and that is enough, the determination of hatred towards him is shattered thanks to the contact and a few, simple words. Zeke returns human and, perhaps, in a way that reminds us a little of the stories about the monsters of the past, vulnerable. There is a breach in his armor of cunning and coldness that Eren probably wanted to open and continue to enlarge to expose his soft belly. Grisha in all this manages to make us feel sorry for him. I always found the slaughter at the Reiss chapel was really adverse to his character but, in the end, I told myself that Grisha had to be strongly motivated to do what he did. Instead there was something different. Like that particular sparkle in the eyes of his titan of which I spoke many analyzes ago, something that made him different and now we understand what it was. Or rather, WHO.
Personally, I begin to imagine the Attacking Titan as a sort of crazy variable but controlled within the macro organism of Ymir's paths. To make a comparison, I would say as Neo in Matrix. Neo seems the change that dismantles the matrix but, at the end of the trilogy, we realize that everything that seemed to us heroic and revolutionary was nothing more than a sort of antibody designed to restart the system and purging it from its anomalies in a cycle that is will repeat again and again. How much is the Attacking Titan free, actually? Can he really stop Ymir? But above all, what is this terrible scenario that Grisha begs Zeke to stop at any cost?

So I was just thinking about chapter 121 and everything that's happened so far and I was wondering what Grisha would have done if it weren't for PATHS Eren's influence. Eren made Grisha promise his 9 year old self that he'd show him the basment when he returned which is a mindfuck in it's own right. But it gets even creepier when you realize that Grisha most likely never meant for Eren to ever even go to the basement and find the books. One of the biggest plot points of the series has been the basement and the first 3 seasons of the show was all about them trying to get to it but its so creepy now knowing that Eren really wasn't supposed to be there. In the journal Grisha wrote "I hope a fellow patriot finds this", as if someone would just happen upon it. If he had meant for a specific someone to read it then wouldn't he address it to them? If Eren was meant to read it then wouldn't he have used his name?
It also makes me think about how Eren inherited the Attack and Founding titans. I believe that PATHS Eren made Grisha give 9 year old Eren the power of the titans. I always thought it was weird how Grisha was crying in the forest while he injected Eren but I wrote it off as grief for losing his wife and having to turn his son into a titan. I didnt think he was a total monster. But now that we know what was going on behind the scenes of some of Grisha's biggest moments it starts to make sense. The look in his eyes in the Reiss Chapel when he kept sweating and looking to Eren to gauge his reaction and the way he stared straight at PATHS Eren as he promised him the basement key matches the look he had when he told Keith not to follow them into the forest that night he injected Eren.
For some reason PATHS Eren wanted Zeke to see the memory of him eating Grisha. At first I thought that was just Eren fucking with Zeke but now I'm thinking that something big must have happened in the forest that night and I'm almost positive that future Eren had something to do with it. I'm excited to see just how much of a hand Eren had in inheriting his own powers.
And then the "If you want to save Mikasa and Armin" thing. He said it while he injected Eren in the forest that night. I thought Grisha had said that because of how close the three of them were but Eren Kruger said the exact same thing to him over a decade ago when they weren't even born yet. How could he have known that they would exist? Why would Kruger care about some kids he's never meet in the first place?
If anything it'd have made more sense if Kruger would have said something about protecting Eren and Carla. Still would have been weird because Carla was a stranger and Eren didn't even exist yet but at least it would have been his own future wife and son. At some point I even thought that it was a future Grisha sending the thoughts to Kruger but it still wouldn't make any sense for him to say Armin and Mikasa and not Eren and Carla. Armin and Mikasa are the two most important people in Eren's life. I feel like everyone's pretty much known this for a couple of years now but we were all just waiting for it to be confirmed that it was a future version of Eren sending thoughts to Eren Kruger.
Then the depression starts lads. Bad parenting has been a running theme in SNK for all of the 10 years it's been out. Grisha was the certified Trash Dad™ for years. We all assumed that he learned nothing from his time with Zeke and the consequences that followed he and Dina raising him the way they did. But seeing chapters 120 and 121 it really seems like Grisha had no intentions of bringing his family into this again. Ere 's upbringing was a complete 180 from Zeke's. He really was trying to keep his work as a shifter and restorationist and his role as a husband and father separate. We were all so upset that Grisha was trying to turn innocent Eren into another Zeke but the one who turned Eren into this was basically...himself. Chapter 121 shows us Grisha didn't agree with Eren's aspirations of becoming a Scout. He wanted his wife and children to stay safe inside the walls. The fact that he had to doom his other son to a life of terror must have torn him apart.
That being said Grisha is not blameless. The moment between him and Zeke warmed my soul and actually made me like the both of them quite a bit more. I hope it gave the both of them at least a bit of comfort but it will never make up for what he'd already done to Zeke and what he did during his final years. He still went to that cave intent on killing the Reiss family. Yes, he couldn't do it himself and Eren ended up goading him into it but he still massacred an entire family.
Now though I'm wondering if this is really Eren or his successor. Its so damn hard to tell now. We thought that Grisha had acted independently and of his own will and Eren has always claimed to be free but uh...this chapter, man. I feel like its a long shot but I dont think Eren would be immune to a future shifter's will. He has a strong mind but I dont think its impossible. Maybe that's just what I'm hoping for since Eren's been freaking my shit out for the last few chapters though. I was worried for him for thosse first few chapter after the attack on Marley but he's just been scaring the hell out of me lately. This doesn't even seem like Eren anymore.
#he's still my big ol son but uh...pls son ur scaring ur mama#im super fucking scared i dont know what he's planning to do#its so hard to tell if hes lying or not#apparently hes planning something terrible if grisha asked zeke to stop him but zeke said that eren can show grisha what he wants him to see#so how much of what grisha saw was the truth? did he even know what he was looking at?#but then zeke said that eren can only see part of the future. so eren would only be able to show grisha the bit of the future he saw right?#i have no idea what either of them saw but they arent seeing the whole picture#also i saw someone say that maybe eren did know exactly what would happen and he only showed grisha part of it so he'd get the wrong idea#but that still doesnt make sense. why would he show grisha a future with a terrible ending?#if eren actually did save the world then why would he show grisha the terrible part knowing he would disapprove?#youd think he would show him the aftermath where everything is ok. or as ok as it can be.#why would he take a chance on showing grisha a terrible future knowing that zeke and grisha would meet again?#if anything that would just make it harder for him to go through with the plan. and it has now because zeke already gave ymir the order#and apparently she cant be stopped#and also someone else said that they think that erens plan is to use the rumbling to destroy everyone that isnt an eldian#which makes sense because eren said he was gonna steal the freedom of the people who took his freedom from him.#and they also pointed out the ocean scene where eren said that if they kill all their enemies abroad then theyd finally be free#and he had seen the future at that point or at least the zeke and grisha bit. but that wouldnt solve anything?#as long as the eldian race exists then so will the power of the titans. killing the whole world wouldnt do anything for the titan problem?#unless im missing something maybe. but as long as the eldians exist and ymir fritz is still a slave then the titans will exist tok right?#it does take someone with royal blood to command her though so i guess eren would have to wipe out the royals too but that means historia#if there isnt anyone to command ymir then i guess she wont be able to make titans anymore but shifters would still exist yes?#the power will be passed to a random person if no one takes it willingly but the power of the shifter will always be around#all they have to do is summon their titan and ymir will make it for them but i guess she wouldnt make normal titans anymore#it seems like killing all the royals would be the best solution really. zeke historia and her baby are the only ones left with royal blood#so it'd have to be them but i really dont see how else he could do it. plus he couldnt control it. he has the founder but no royal blood.#unless historia wants to volunteer to hold his hand while he command the wall titans away from the island or something#just...the world is bigger than paradis and marley and hizuru though. he doesnt know who he'd be killing#my brain wrinkles ache#snk 121
