        WITH DISCIPLINE SO PROFOUND HE HAD  been sitting there for hours.    ridges    &    patterns in the oak desk were etched permanently in his mind,    his gaze forever tracing its ups    &    downs as he wrote report after report.    there was a considerably large pile set to the side   ;   his ‘ finished ‘ pile.    &    here he is,    a feral beast they call guilt eating away at his insides,    leaving no room even for air.    nimble,    long fingers run up    &    down the bridge of his nose,    attempting to release the tension in his brow.    is this the reason some people would drink so much ?    to forget the very concept that humans feel such impalpably strong emotions ?    but he wouldn’t allow himself to indulge,    there was no occasion for him to do so.    if he was to suffer,    then he will.

but he’ll take a momentary break after finishing the day’s paperwork,    lids dropping as quickly as his pen does.    a man’s greatest enemy is his mind    &    erwin was no exception to this.    so when he heard the door open,    foot steps rung like church bells in his ears,    he’d take the opportunity to sit back,    eyes still closed.           ❝          i heard some of the new gossip around town            ❞             words drip with poorly masked exhaustion   (    he felt comfortable showing his true state among only a few   )   &   voice is tinged with a humor darker than the ink staining his fingers.           ❝            they think i’m too aged,    too senile    ;    they called me an old fool.    do you agree,    hange ?    am i a fool ?            ❞           a chuckle or two would slip past cracked    /    chapped lips,    the dull pain from stretching them was welcomed.    if it wasn’t for the small stings in his long days,    he might think he was truly dead.

——— frustration  seizes  muscle,  brings  him  to  grip  the  pen  in  hand  with  more  force  than  intended.  ink  pools  on  paper  as  force  pulls  itself  down,  as  well.  UNFORTUNATE  —  &  all  the  more  frustrating.  to  feel  this  tension  at  his chest  &  at  his  shoulders  brings  further  irritation  with  the  acknowledgement  that  this  frustration  should  mark  itself absent.  idly,  he  fears  that  the  pen  will snap beneath his fingers  although  QUANTITIVELY  frustration  is  not  so  great  that  it  should  threaten  self-command.  this  exchange  has  lasted  for  too  long.  he  sets  the  pen  down.  

 “ i  am  asking  you  to  remember  the  difference  between  listening  &  acknowledging  — “  he  pauses,  scrutinizes  the  spot  of  ink  that  had  accumulated  on  the paper  from  too much  pressure,  & decides ultimately  that  the  word  “acknowledging”  had  not  been  the  word  best  suited  to  his  intent.  “conceding”  might  have  been  a  better  fit.  oh well.

thus  composed  breath  brings  relaxed  ( pointedly  so )  control  to  his  shoulders.  he  looks  up,  nods  once,  &  relents  —— “  you  have  my  apologies,  captain.  i  value  your  contributions.  i  hope  you  know  so. “

with  cool  voice,  he  speaks  as  though  he  recites  written  apology :  smoothly,  without  hesitancy.  the  words  spoken  are  not  disingenuous,  but  they  do  neglect  to state  blatantly  the  underlying  message  that  had  been  the  entire  basis of their  ‘ argument ‘  : that  the  decision  remains  his  to  make.

that  they  know this,  that  they  respect  this  is  certain  to  him.  EVEN  SO,  petty  comments   (  ‘  i  can’t  believe you  won’t  even  listen  to  me ‘  ) grate  upon  him;  the  comment  prolongs  banter  rather  than  debate  more  stimulating.  

&  OF  COURSE  HE  LISTENS.  doing  such  is  the  best  courtesy  he  can  give. doing  such  allows  him  to  do  his  best  work.  so  he  listens …  but  he  doesn’t  agree.
