"The two who were kidnapped were both civil engineers, and experts in geologic faults. Was it coincidence? Anyway..." *Earthquake immediately hits*
I liked the part with the explosive dragon-release button.
Atragon sounds a lot cooler in theory than it actually is, which is not to say that it was bad. It's just that the idea of using a hyper-advanced submarine to fight off a lost-atlantis style underwater civilisation's attempted conquest of the planet is one hell of a premise to live up to.
In practice, most of this movie was people talking about interesting things instead of showing them happen. At one point we're shown some newspaper headlines that include "VENICE DESTROYED" and "HONG KONG IN RUINS", before it cut back to people in an office talking again.
One of the plot-lines was that some creep photographer guys were stalking a random woman they saw, so they could convince her to do erotic modelling for them, or something? She later fell in love with one of them, after he wooed her off-screen, I guess. Also, did I mention these characters were introduced at a bikini photo shoot, down by the docks, at midnight?
There were a few neat action scenes, and plenty of model ships and buildings blowing apart or bursting into flames. I particularly enjoyed any time the submarine actually did anything because, despite being a submarine, it flies through the air like a spaceship, and sprays a gas that instantly freezes anything it touches.
The most realistic part of the movie was when the UN held an emergency meeting to discuss the evil underwater empire's threat, and convened it ten minutes later without doing anything. Although they did later send their most advanced submarine, Red Satan, to check things out.
There was a great scene where a parcel arrived at a police station and a guy pointed out that it could be a letter bomb. As a precaution, they carried it about one whole metre over to a desk before they opened it. Thus neutralising any potential threat.
A lot of talking, occasionally punctuated by monsters, lasers, and explosions. Good entertainment.
