What would be your opinion on a character that is not yet blind; but is liable to go blind in the future due to a genetic condition; being very casual and open about that fact? Potentially joking about it or showing them already beginning to adapt their home.
Please share thoughts in the notes.
Hi, I accidentally posted this before answering fully.
I personally find it refreshing that their blindness isn’t portrayed as the worst thing that could ever happen. It too often is portrayed as devastating. Someone accepting the possibility and facing it with a healthy and adaptable mindset sounds great.
Jokes can be a bit complicated. I would discourage making blind jokes, as they are not yet blind. However, joking about health changes can also be helpful in processing and acceptance. For jokes in general, I don’t mind if they are directed at themself, much like the way Toph jokes about her blindness in ATLA, but if they aren’t part of the blind community or close friends with someone who is, jokes can sometimes be ill informed or they’ve been said a million times already and are only going to get an eye roll in response.
Jokes can also make other people who aren’t blind more comfortable interacting with a blind person. This could also be true of someone who is liable to lose vision or go through other health changes, as jokes can break the tension around the topic, due to disabilities often being considered scary, confusing, or taboo.
However, joking can also make people more uncomfortable, so it depends on you want their friends to react. It would be nice to have some supportive friends.
For progressive vision loss, I suggest checking out @mimzy-writing-online — or just in general, because they have an amazing blog.
You also asked about adapting their home.
If they know blind people, they are going to have much more knowledge about what is available, what might actually work for them, and what suits them best. Otherwise, they might not know what adaptations and devices are available because they didn’t grow up using them or hearing about them. They don’t talk about the latest gadget among blind friends or go to conventions or learn how to blind in school. So they’ll have to work harder. If they don’t already know blind folks, show them connecting to others with their genetic condition or other people who are losing vision. Have them watch blind content creators online. Have them develop opinions and thoughts. Write them eventually being able to decide for themself what would be best.
That can be a start, anyway.
Molly Burke and TheBlindLife have videos about assistive devices and adapting their homes to fit their needs. Watching their videos will also give you insight into how residual vision influences what types of adaptive techniques are used. Lighting, for example, is a big deal for navigation, reducing eye strain, or stimulation.
Lastly, be sure to get a handful of blind folks to read your story.

Extended credits for Museum at Tomorrow episode 5
Below the cut are all of the folks who I used (and asked to be credited) for recordings in Museum at Tomorrow episode 5- specifically, the "This is not for You" recordings.
(The list was too long for podcast episode descriptions)
These recordings were mixed into the soundscape of the show, heavily processed- so you may or may not be able to pick out your voice. Each unique recording is preserved as rhythem, timber, and shape within the episode.
Thank you for your work in creating the canvas of this piece.

I think the economy has been a ticking Time Bomb not just since 1913 but most especially since both political parties, Bush and Obama, bailed out the two big to fail Banks in 2008. The House of Cards was coming down no matter who was president. President Trump should fired Anthony fauci and Deborah Burks while ending lockdowns before the 2020 election, he did none of it. That's not my opinion, it's Dr Scott Atlas' . Both in his interview on American thought leaders And in his book "A Plague upon our House." I'm not a partisan in any way. I call it like I see it and stay the fuck out of tribal nonsense. If all Americans did that we wouldn't have scumbag politicians destroying our country.

The Mills and Bibbys on 1848 Warren County, NY map
In 1848, J. Chace, E.A. Balch, William Otis Shearer and Robert Pearsall Smith contributed to a map of Warren County, New York, now held by the Library of Congress. It would be a "cadastral map showing towns (townships), numbered township survey sections, large property tracts (with owners' names), rural buildings, and householders' names," along with having an "agricultural statistical table, population statistical table for 1855, and business directory for [the] Glens Falls inset." In the process, the Mills and Bibby families were put on there for eternity, in this map, which was published in 1858.
The name "J. Mills" is underlined in yellow, and the dot representing his dwelling is circled. This is undoubtedly John Mills. Interestingly, in 1850, the Mills family is recorded as living in Glens Falls, but perhaps they were only there briefly, returning to Bolton not long after. This is supported by the fact that John is not on the list of subscribers listed on the 1851 Glens Falls map, which is currently housed by the Warren County Records Center. However, the 1855 census shows varied Mills families around Bolton, despite a Thomas Mills dying in Chester in March 1850. This census shows some of the Mills family neighbors as the Reynolds (2 families), Fish, Noble, Burton, Watson, Shutluff, and Philo families, the same ones that are mentioned on the above map! [1]
Below is a zoomed out version of the region, with the yellow dot at the top of the screen representing where the Mills family is living.
Doing some sleuthing, it is clear that A. Mills is Alphonzo Mills, whom is not related, but is part of another Mills line as he s listed as born in Vermont, married to his wife Eliza A., possibly with the last name of Chandler, living in Chester, with Chestertown part of the same municipality. [2]
It is not known who W.F. Mills was, but he may have been related.
This post was originally published on WordPress in January 2019.
Looking at the 1855 census, it is clear that T. Mills is 49-year-old Irish-born Thomas Mills, whom was married to 43-year-old Irish-born lass named Margaret, whose last name may have been Yancy, due toe the presence a 65-yearold Elon Yancy in the household. Thomas and Margaret have 8 children: Joseph (age 17), Mary (age 17), Rachel (age 17), John (age 13), Edward S (age 11), Margaret (age 9), Phoebe (age 4), and Thomas (age 1). [3] While the census lists him as living in Chester, New York, Pottersville was a hamlet of Chester. The connection of the individual above to the map is clear: the neighbors of the Mills family are the Ferrisses, Virgils, Rowlands, Witneys, and two families: one headed by Isaac Mills (shown as I. Mills in the above map) and another headed by George Bibby (shown as G. Bibby on the above map). There is also an E. Beebe living the area, I'm seeing now, who is likely Elias Bibby or an unrelated Beebe family.
The above statistics of the region show that it was broadly agricultural, with much of the population in Queensbury.
Thanks to the Warren County Historical Society's TIF of the map, since it wasn't loading on the Library of Congress's site, I was able to look at the inserts of Warrensburg, Pottersville, Caldwell, and Chester, but no Bibbys or Millses were mentioned there. By 1875 John would be in Chester, specifically Northwest of Pottersville, as indicated in an 1876 atlas, where he was called "J.R. Mills," published the same year of his death in Minerva. Nearby was T. Bibby (undoubtedly Thomas Bibby), G. Bibby (undoubtedly George Bibby), and I. Mills (undoubtedly Isaac Mills).
Courtesy of the Warren County Atlas of 1876, with the above taken from a TIF download of the map on the Warren County Records Center website.
That's all for this post. Until the next one!

Summary: When Bentley was a little boy, his mother was the light of his life, like any little boy would be towards their loving mother, but he never knew his dad. His mom said that was because they broke up before she found out she was pregnant with him. Bentley always wondered about him, what he was like, was he nice? etc. His mom always told him all the good things about him, stories about him and his motorcycle, his humor, his kindness, every wonderful thing about the man, and Bentley's mother told him about it. But at the age of five Bentley's life came crashing down. One day he found his mom in her bed dead, she had died from a sudden heart attack in her sleep. Bentley was taken by a social worker who then brought him to the only person he had left, his dad, Eddie Brock. He didn't know what to do or feel at first, and his dad didn't seem to know either, but Bentley ended up getting extremely close to his dad and loved him dearly. When he was 15 another sudden event changed his life or well someone caused it, Carlton Drake. His dad was fired, his girlfriend Ann, a mother figure to him, left him after being fired from her job because of it and they had to move. Ann offered Bentley to stay with her but he declined, he wouldn't leave his dad. Yes, his dad was irresponsible and didn't go about things the right way, but he was confident enough to know that his dad had a reason to, Carlton Drake was a real bad guy. So he would try to gather enough evidence or research in secret to try and help his dad out because he wanted to see him smile again and live his life. But his research seemed to make him more confused and concerned about what was going on, aliens from outer space? Human experiments? And before he could even get further research his dad seemed to have one of the aliens...inside him? Its name was Venom and it would change both father and son's life forever.

He was taken by a group of aliens going to sell him on the black market on the planet Knowhere, but he was spotted by a teenage Peter Quill who saved him just in time. He was taken in by Peter, who already gave him a name, Kevin Maverick, which in turn Yondu said if Quill didn’t want them to get rid of him it was his responsibility. So Kevin became a part of Yondu’s Ravagers and Quill’s younger brother. It was a crazy life growing up for Kevin, who doesn’t even know that his name was based on the actor Kevin Bacon from the movie Footloose or the Tom Cruise film Top Gun, it was even harder trying to make sure his older brother didn’t die doing stupid shit, but he loved being by his brother's side and the family he had grew in size when the Guardians of The Galaxy formed.

Summary: Kvasir learned at an early age that he was to be brought up as a warrior, the protector of the sons of King Odin. So, his father sent him away to be trained and live in the Royal Palace of Valaskjalf. He was a quiet boy that kept to himself and focused on his training despite missing his mother, who had unfortunately passed away a year before he was sent away. He would train under the rough commanders, which were way rougher than they should have been with him, but there was one person who was patient with him and helped him learn things smoother and that was Heimdall. When Kvasir had any free time he would be reading, keeping to himself. However, one day there was someone that had gotten Kvasir to open up more, and that someone was the one who he was sworn to protect Loki. He taught him fun, to play games, and even showed him his magic. So, the two became incredibly close, making Kvasir loyal to Loki and Loki alone. So, Kvasir grew up being by his side through anything...and it was true because when Loki took Odin's thrown after Thor's banishment, become his left-handed man. Even after that, Kvasir would still follow Loki to whatever depths of mischief he wrought against anyone.

Summary: In 2002 Tony Stark received a call from the hospital about a newborn baby boy being abandoned by his mother and she had put his name down as the father. Tony knew the woman as one of his drunken flings but wanted to make absolutely sure he was the father so he took a DNA test. The test came back to confirm that Tony Stark was indeed the father of the baby boy, throwing him into the unexpected world of a single dad. Tony ends up naming the baby boy Jude Edwin Stark. Growing up, Jude is a shy, but sweet caring boy who cares a lot for his dad, despite the fact that his dad is busy working. He also grew up with little spotlight as possible since his dad didn’t want all that pressure put on him like he did growing up and wanted him to at least have a little bit of a normal life. This ended when Jude was only 6 years old because of his dad being held hostage in Afghanistan and coming back a different person, becoming a superhero known as Iron Man.

Summary: Victor had a weird twist in life, his mother left him and his dad when he was only three years old and never looked back. His father was a highly talented neurosurgeon that could barely give him the time of day, Victor also had weird vivid dreams about things happening that hadn’t happened yet. He wanted to go to his dad for help but Victor didn’t really know how to express his feelings towards his dad without being brushed away. But then his dad’s accident happen...it threw Victor’s life further into a loop, seeing the man that had always stood so strong was now feeling so worthless and lost. The only one that really helped Victor during this time was his dad’s ex Christine Palmer, who had been like a mother to him since he was younger. But then his dad pushed her away for good, leaving Victor alone with a dad he could barely even talk to without being yelled at to go away then one day he woke up and his dad was gone. He left just like his mom did, but gave him away to Christine. Victor refused to be abandoned again so made it his mission to track down his father's movements and eventually found him in Nepal. Where apparently his dad was learning to become a Master of the Mystic Arts to heal himself...oh and found out his dreams were an ability to see into the future...which should be great for him since he’s seen his father's death more than once.

Since many of you have asked after the previous post, let’s talk about the car we acquired by contacting the seller using the 1957 sale ad he placed in Road & Track. Our good friends at Auto Week covered our story with this car back in 2012, you can read the full story by following the link in the comments. Here are some excerpts: “Even if you’re suffering from barn-find fatigue, you’ve got to admit that cracking open the door to a cluttered garage to discover a forlorn Cisitalia 202 coupe covered in a thick layer of dust would be the stuff of heart-stopping fantasy. Not as famous as Ferrari’s offerings, the little coupes and roadsters from the Turin automaker are nevertheless among the most beautiful cars of their era; a Pininfarina-designed 202 was one of the vehicles shown at the Museum of Modern Art's groundbreaking "8 Automobiles" exhibition of 1951. A red GT with wire knock-offs was later added to MOMA’s permanent collection. But this is not a Cisitalia 202 GT, even though that’s what we thought it was when we first saw the pictures. It’s not even Italian. Heck, it’s not even made of metal -- it's a fiberglass body on a 1953 MG frame. Regular readers can guess where this is headed: The car, an Allied Swallow coupe, is the latest acquisition of automotive historian Geoff Hacker. Unlike so many of its obscure contemporaries, Allied had some well-known talent behind it: Bill Burke, the lakebed racer who built the first bellytanker and speed equipment supplier Mickey Thompson. Roy Kinch, founder of fiberglass supplier Atlas, brought his composite expertise to the table. Engine options were widely varied and often wild: The stock MG inline-four was common, yes, but we know there were Swallows powered by a Mercury V8 sporting Ardun speed equipment, a Jaguar mill and our personal favorite, a Duesenberg straight-eight chopped in half and fitted with a custom crankshaft.” (at Niles, Ohio) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnuIQ-DLdGd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
