Women and The Right to Self-Defense
This past weekend, millions of women marched in cities all over the world to stand in solidarity for women’s rights. I have had strong female figures in my life, all of whom I love and admire dearly. Despite the political agendas that were prevalent during the march, I do believe that all women should be safe and protected, and that they should have the knowledge and the tools to protect themselves. In this article, I intend on discussing self-protection options for women, as well as some tips as to how women can keep themselves safer in today’s age.
This past weekend, it was nearly impossible to open up my social media feed and not see someone talking about the march, and I even knew people who marched in the march itself. While I do not share many of the liberal political agendas that were espoused during that march (pro-abortion, anti-masculinity, anti-conservatism, etc.), I do personally feel that it is important for all women to be safe and to be protected from harm. Regardless of your political stance, I feel that all of us can at least agree on that.
I have had strong female figures throughout my entire life. Growing up, my Mom was truly an outstanding figure. She shaped the way I see the world, and how I treat others. Right now, my wife is the primary female figure in my life. She is incredibly driven, head-strong, and goal-oriented. My younger sister is very outspoken and strong-willed. As much as I preach the value of masculinity, I also value the role these women have had in my life. They have helped shape the way I believe women should be treated.
As the result of my upbringing and married life, I take the topic of a woman’s right to self-defense very seriously. I believe that all women should be able to protect themselves from anything or anyone that may try to beat, rape, or even murder them. In light of this, allow me to present some self-protection options that I believe are best for a woman to learn, pursue, and perfect to ensure that they are safe in today’s world.
These options were selected based on the following criteria:
-They had to work for a far smaller individual facing a much larger assailant, or multiple assailants.
-They had to be styles where even a basic level of knowledge of each field could potentially save their life.
Blade Work: I personally believe that the best self-protection tool for a woman is a blade. Yes, I do believe that women should also learn how to use firearms, and that they should also learn about concealed carry (more on that later). However. Edged Weapons should be a woman’s primary weapon of choice, for the following reasons:
-They operate best in very close-quarters, which is the range in which most sexual assaults occur, and is also the range in which blades excel.
-A small fixed blade is much faster to draw and access in a close-range fight than a pistol is.
-A blade requires no strength to use. It simply requires willingness, speed, and intelligence.
-A woman can carry and conceal a small fixed blade on her person (even multiple blades from multiple parts on the body) easily under tighter, more form fitting clothing (as most women tend to dress that way).
-A woman never has to worry about the blade jamming, or running out of ammunition (unlike a pistol, which is subject to both).
-A rapist will have a much harder time trying to disarm a blade at close-quarters than a firearm.
As far as Edged Weapons training for women goes, I highly recommend training in Atienza Kali. I’ve been a student and instructor of Atienza Kali for most of my adult life, and I have found that the Atienza Kali approach to blade work is probably the most effective blade system I’ve seen that addresses real-life scenarios. The system was developed to deal with street attacks in Jamaica, Queens in New York City, which was a very dangerous place at the time. In fact, Atienza Kali also offers a program called Bladed Women, which is taught by Silak Dianne Atienza, wife of Tuhon Carl Atienza, the head of the Atienza Kali system.
Another blade art I recommend is Sayoc Kali. Sayoc Kali specializes in knife combatives. Sayoc Kali is a brother-art to Atienza Kali, and both systems were designed to address real-life scenarios based upon the experiences of the systems’ founders. Sayoc Kali knife work is probably the premier knife system out there, and is actually the biggest influence on Atienza Kali. It also has various training methods to train one’s mind to be willing and capable to deal with violence, which I feel makes the Sayoc system incredibly unique. Click here to check out a video of one of my friends, Eloy Quintin of IMPACT Martial Arts in Virginia Beach, VA, demonstrating Sayoc knife methods with her husband Ervin Quintin.
Brazilian Jujitsu: Sexual Assaults take place in close-grappling range. Yes, there are many grappling arts out there, but if I had to choose one for the average woman to realistically prepare her for the extremely violent and uncomfortable range in which a sexual assault occurs, it would have to be Brazilian Jujitsu, for the following reasons:
-It is a style that depends on leverage as opposed to strength. I’ve personally witnessed small female practitioners of Brazilian Jujitsu submit large men in sparring bouts. The following video went viral a few years ago and demonstrates how a female trained in Brazilian Jujitsu can make things very hard for a guy using pure strength.
youtube
-It teaches the student how to be comfortable against a sweaty, resisting opponent at extreme close-range. This is essential for a woman who realistically wants to train to combat a sexual assault.
Even a rudimentary knowledge and skill in Brazilian Jujitsu would be incredibly beneficial to a female. Combined with a blade, it would be a devastating combination that would ruin any attackers day.
Firearms: While I stated earlier that blades ought to be a woman’s primary weapon of choice, firearms cannot be ignored. I firmly believe that along with a blade, a female should also be knowledgeable in the use of firearms. When it comes to home defense, a firearm enables the user to have both power and range when facing a threat. A woman practicing Concealed Carry, when trained alongside some Jujitsu and blade work, is a force to be reckoned with if attacked while going about her day.
The following video shows a single mother who, while watching her child, faced a violent intruder with her shotgun, and shot and killed the man. As good as a blade is, in this scenario (where you had two large men, one of which was armed with a 12 inch hunting blade, trying to kick in your door) the best option would be the firearm.
youtube
In conclusion, all women should learn how to protect themselves. While it would be ideal for violence to never occur, the reality is is that violence does exist, and women are often the victims of such violence. However, with the right training, the right tools, and the right mindset, a woman can become a victor, instead of a victim, over a violent attack.

This is as important “dryfire” as the gun. Combatives for the next little while isolated and working a complete package.

SOCal pistol (my rifle wanted in the pic) and a great crew with solid reps. Second pic is the hat boys from this class. There is a great shooting culture in California and many LE units doing their training correctly and it shows by their guys performance. Much love and thanks to the SoCal @atienzakali guys who helped with combatives and blade portion and @biltwell guys for their friendship and advice on all things two wheels. My friend Brian as always for pulling it together with ranges. Rad time by all!
