I joined the YGO fandom last year. This show is now pushing 20 years old, but i am impressed by how much is still happening in it. New art, new fic. There are active blogs I can follow, and older blogs I can stalk through. Years and years of love for the show that keep building.
But other, more recent shows? I follow character tags and they don't have nearly as much new content as #atem or #puzzleshipping. They blazed, oh they blazed, and I blazed with them. I wrote 80k focused on Viktor hargreeves in 6 weeks. And now that tag on average fills my dash maybe twice a week while ygo stuff appears daily. The new toh episode dropped, and it only filled my dash for a day.
Bbc Merlin. FMA. PJO. Danny Phantom. These are my forever fandoms, because they're always there and they are still alive. They're also all older. I hesitate to say all the fans are older, but i wouldn't be surprised if a chunk of what keeps it going are 30+ folks. Those of us who have less free time and are selective about what we sink into. Who remember how things were stretched out, or perhaps know just now how to savor things (it's been 4 months, i still haven't finished watching ygo). But I like lingering. It's peaceful, it's healthy, and i think a better form of fandom love because you build a lot more for something you love.
Not people saying “Fandom has always been like this” in that vent post I made. No. It hasn’t always been like this. Fandom has NEVER been like this until recently and if you were in fandom pre-tumblr purge, pre-twitter, pre-netflix boom, pre-tiktok….then you would fucking know it was nothing like this.
We still had the drive to create. We still sold prints and charms and made zines…but it was never like this.
The introduction of streaming, binge shows that drop all at once, tiktok and vine RIP i still love u vine but you were the beginning of a particularly ugly era) creating this bite sized, quick paced ‘content’ era of creation and it bled out into fucking everything else.
Fandoms didn’t die down when the show ended or the season was over. You didn’t mass unfollow artist, writers or moots just because they changed fandoms. There wasn’t this need to please the algorithm in order for your posts to get seen by people and enjoyed.
Fandoms used to last YEARS. Star Trek is literally the oldest running fandom out there and you got people in there that could care less about the new stuff and still have been happily prancing through their fucking fifty year old fandom today. Hell, even SPN after all it’s fuckups and shitshows has a dedicated fanbase STILL creating tons of art and fic.
There is no patience anymore. No calm feeling of taking in fandom and friends at a pace that which doesn’t make you stressed and is still fun.
Do I blame fandom for this? Of course not, but people are complacent with it and start changing their vocab to accommodate and end up making the situation so deep it cant be fixed.
We call Art & Fic Content now, completely stripping the value of what it is to a level of consumerism instead of personal entertainment & community bonding.

2, 8, 9, 10, 22 & 27 for the anime ask! ^^
Oh thanks! I didn’t expect to get any more of these.
2. first anime crush
So when I was 5 I had a crush on Ash from Pokemon lmao but that was before I really knew what anime was.
I guess my “real” first anime crush was either Yugi/Atem from YGO
or Tao Ren from Shaman King
8. anime character you are most like
Probably Ed from FMA
9. favorite anime child
all of them because holy shit son these anime kids are like literal children
One little kid who I will always love and aww over is Goten form DBZ
I’m Goku in that gif
10. favorite anime animal sidekick
Happy from Fairy Tail because fuck yes he’s my fav
22. age you started watching anime/person who introduced you to it.
I’ve been watching anime all my life but didn’t know it. It wasn’t until I was 12 that I really “discovered” it. As for who introduced it to me, it was both tv programs like toonami and my brother.
27. anime you plan to watch in the future
I don’t watch a lot of anime anymore unless I’m bored and don’t want to read the manga.
But here’s the list of manga I’d like to read if I ever get off my lazy ass:
Way of the House Husband
Fire Force
Spy x Family
My Hero Academia
I maaaaay check out The Promise Neverland, but that’s a big if since I’m still not a big fan of children being killed ^^;
#meme thingy#though tpn looks like it got a happy ending so that's why i'm considering reading it#saalvasam#responses

Okay, how about this: the boys (Yugi, atem, Malik and Kek, Bakura and Ryou, Joey and the Kaiba brothers) watch FMA 2003 and Brotherhood. What do they like about each and what are their overall opinions?
Yugi probably loves both as he enjoys the bigger storyline with Rose in the original but also loves the simple but complex storyline of brotherhood
Ryou probably started watching Brotherhood since he would most likely see Yugi watching it, he loves Riza a lot, and the Armstrongs!
Bakura has never touched anime before and now he’s seeing Yugi and Ryou curled up in front of either a laptop or the tv watching a short tempered blondie fight with someone in armor. He eventually gives into his curiosity and asks what’s going on, he gets a very long and detailed explanation of what’s happening and also gets explained to that there’s 2 versions of this show
Atem doesn’t even touch technology unless it’s duel related. But that doesn’t stop him from watching a little of what Yugi’s watching before he goes back to what he’s doing
Malik would love both! He absolutely enjoys Edward in both, especially after Ryou sat him down to watch the entire thing, both of them. A very long session of snacks and yelling but he loved it all
Malik was the one to get Kek to start watching it as well, since Kek has never ever touched technology other than his duel disk, he had a little trouble understanding what was happening but he got the hang of it. Kek really likes Gluttony. I will not elaborate
Joey? Joey....he....doesn’t understand a single thing that’s going on in either. He still watches it because Yugi seems to love it a lot, so he tries really hard.
Kaiba brothers, they would definitely prefer brotherhood since they are brothers and Ed and Al’s brotherhood is kinda like their own and they would watch it together when Seto isn’t as busy

YGO for the fandom thing! If already asked, then FMA.
How I first got into it:
My first brush with YGO was when I was a young preteen (about thirteen, I think?) and I caught an episode of the dub on Kids WB. It followed Pokémon, which was what I was actually interested in, and to be entirely honest I was completely unimpressed with YGO at first. I didn’t really understand what it was, the episode I caught was the one where Yuugi duels Kajiki in Duelist Kingdom … I liked Jounouchi (whom I knew as Joey Wheeler at the time) right off the bat, but the others? Not interested.
But the thing is that it was on, and I liked shows that came on before and after it, so I watched it for something to do … and eventually I was hooked. Later I discovered the manga in monthly Shounen Jump (it was monthly in America), and I realized that the manga was even better. I fell out of it after I left my biological mother’s house when I was fifteen, but a couple years ago I saw that Netflix had up through the first half of Battle City, so I watched that for nostalgia and got pulled right back in. Since I was out of episodes I searched out the manga again, was reminded of how superior the manga is, and boom. Sold forever.
Everything I ship:
Yuugi/Jounouchi as the end-all be-all, most important ship forever and ever, goodbye.
Anzu/Atem
Honda/Anzu
Otogi/Honda (albeit one-sided on Otogi’s part, and manga characterizations only)
Kaiba/Atem (albeit one-sided on Kaiba’s part, and he’s aromantic/demisexual anyway so it’s more of a QPP on his end)
Kaiba/Bakura (though this is a QPP since Bakura is aroace and Kaiba is aromantic/demisexual)
Mokuba/Shizuka (when they’re both older ofc)
Isis/Mai
My favourite platonic relationship(s):
Jounouchi & Shizuka, as THE BEST and healthiest siblings in the entire series, they are precious and heartbreaking and heartmending all at once.
Jounouchi & Anzu, because I absolutely adore their relationship development in the manga, how they went from constantly quarreling because Anzu didn’t trust Jounouchi and Jounouchi didn’t like her hounding him, to Jounouchi saving her life at the museum, to Anzu defending him in Duelist Kingdom and supporting him so enthusiastically in Battle City. Their relationship is so good.
Atem & Yuugi, because Atem is like the older brother Yuugi never had, and I think it’s honestly impossible to read this series without feeling your heart tug so painfully because of how much they care about one another. (Also, “The champion shouldn’t be on his knees” is one of my favorite lines in the whole series, agh.)
Jounouchi & Honda, because Honda is the big brother Jounouchi never had, except he also kind of did, and Honda’s protectiveness over Jounouchi (and thus his reluctance to trust Yuugi at first) can be very sweet, too.
Jounouchi & Bakura, which I can’t believe I didn’t mention earlier, because the way that Jounouchi is so attentive of Bakura even from the start and defends him so much is heart melting. He was so excited to befriend Bakura, he dragged Bakura over to meet the others, he INSISTED on going to Bakura’s apartment the DAY AFTER HE MET HIM because he was worried about Bakura sitting home alone and depressed, he defended Bakura at the start of Memory World when whats-his-face said Bakura’s heart wasn’t pure, and so on and so forth. It’s sweet and needs more attention, tbh.
Top 3 Characters:
Jounouchi Katsuya will always and forever be my number one, if it wasn’t obvious from how his relationships make up the bulk of my favorite platonic ships kdjfdsfds. I loved him even before I liked YGO itself, and reading the manga and studying his character over the years has only made me love him more. Precious baby boy will always be near the top of my “favorite characters” list, always.
Mutou Yuugi, because he’s pretty unconventional as far as shounen protagonists go, given that he’s sensitive and sometimes cries and explicitly hates fighting and violence even though he’ll stand up for those he loves. He has self-confidence issues at first which are not helped by people preferring Atem over him, but he comes into his own and gains that confidence and realizes he had it in him all along. He’s a star, and not just because of his hair.
Hirutani, because even though he is a COMPLETE AND TOTAL MONSTROUS BASTARD, that makes him so very fun to write, even though I’m the one who breathed most of the life into him since he only appeared in four chapters out of the entire manga dkjfsldfds. Hirutani’s existence allowed me to write my magnum opus and makes for very interesting conflicts in my stories. I can’t stop appreciating him.
One of my favourite scenes:
There’s the obvious choice of the scene where Yuugi tells Jounouchi he loves him and then sacrifices himself to save Jounouchi, only for Jounouchi to sacrifice himself in turn to save Yuugi, but there’s also the scene where Jounouchi stands calmly in the middle of a burning building thinking about how he’ll stand on the edge of death with Yuugi but refuses to let him die (and then saves his life by carrying him out of that burning building), and also the scene where Yuugi half-cradles Jounouchi in his arms after Jounouchi has been tortured into unconsciousness by 200,000 volt stun guns and tells him after waking that it’s time for them to go home now, and also the scene where Jounouchi tells Yuugi that helping him was the first time he (Jounouchi) ever liked himself a little, and also the scene where …
Well, you get the idea.
Favourite fandom meme/inside joke:
I’m pretty out of touch with YGO fandom considering the fact that most of the fandom is a fandom for the anime rather than the manga, and thus a lot of the jokes and memes aren’t really funny to me (since they rely on mischaracterizations popularized by the Studio Gallop anime). That said, I do like the ones that are like “well, would you look at the time” and every number on a clock is instead replaced by the word “duel,” or posts that are like “he got sent to the Shadow Realm” when there are pictures of cards all over the floor, and other things like that. (So in other words, things that aren’t so much about the characters as they are just funny things about the series.)

Can’t seem to reblog after that last rant I made, a friend of mine said that this reblog doesn’t exist anymore, so here it is. Mature reply, this one.
The irony of this situation is not lost on me. If you look at their blog it has both Death Note and Yuri On Ice content. So this person is a fan of Death Note and a fan of an anime that is known to have a diverse cast. Ranging from characters hailing from Japan, to Russia, to Canada, and to so many more.
So the fact that they’re not even trying to have some empathy on the fans’ anger of the whole casts’ nationalities and race being completely changed is both funny and sad (previous reblogs show they said “get that feminist bs out of here and get out of the death note tags”, also they never tried to attack my arguments). It might imply they care little about the characters themselves.
A character’s race matters, and the setting also matters. Representation also goddamn matters if you take into consideration that an American TV show went to all this effort to change the whole goddamn race of the cast, implying there was something wrong with the original one. Also when an anime relies heavily on something that is only in Japan, like oh say it’s whole judiciary system and laws, then maybe it would be better to choose another anime with a more Western setting one to adapt. Or something that’s in a more diverse setting. Like FMA, or Black Butler, or Baccano, or Attack on Titan, or Tiger and Bunny, or even Yuri On Ice.
This is like taking Atem and turning him to King Arthur and saying it’s okay because he’ll still be a spirit trapped in like… idk the Millennium Sword and have no memories. That’s the important part.
This is like changing Isis to Irene because her original name makes you ~uncomfortable~ for some reason.
Oh, no, you don’t like it? It’s white washing? Well, if you don’t like it, then don’t watch it. Simple. It’s not like the point of being in a fandom is to express your thoughts. Negative, criticizing thoughts not allowed in fandom. Get that shit out of the YGO tags.
Everyone agree with that logic?
(This is also one of the reasons I don’t like the English dub. You guys may think it’s annoying and accuse me of being, like, “subs only” elitist, but it is still problematic. Jounouchi to Joey, Anzu to Tea, Shizuka to Serenity, Mai Kujaku to Mai Valentine (ah, so close), Rishid to Odion (why?????? when his siblings got near enough versions like Ishizu and Marik?). And then just leave Seto, Mokuba, and Yugi’s names intact (again, why, after changing everyone else’s). I admit I use those names for my AUs and for fun too, but I will never brush aside the fact that watching it makes me uncomfortable. The only reason I’m not as mad is because they didn’t do a complete change like what Death Note will do)
