In my birthday series, I'm only pulling from games I've played, and it's possible I've missed one or two characters on days when there were multiple candidates. But I have tried to cover as many calendar days as I could.

Genuinely surprised

Atelier Iris 1 was painful oldjank, with lame art, awful combat system, dull crafting, and bog-standard animu story.

Atelier Iris 2 might not be great, but it's such a vast improvement of its predecessor. It's short and pretty straightforward, too, which really helps, while having just enough to offer some degree of 'player choice', namely in weapon upgrades and item synthesis.

What a breath of fresh air. I really miss when new games in a series were an undeniable improvement of its predecessors, instead of you rolling the dice in whether you'd be dealing with a completely different gameplay loop, or shittier story, or befuddling art direction. Or in [CURRENT YEAR], where you're flipping a coin in whether the game's been intentionally and maliciously fucked with behind the scenes, especially if it's from Japan.

Here's hoping that Atelier Iris 3, being the closest to Mana Khemia, is the best of the trilogy!

Did you ever play the strange Atelier Iris subseries of Atelier?

I did! I played Atelier Iris 2 Azoth of Destiny and Atelier Iris 3 Grand Phantasm. Loved the adventure and the Opening songs. Haven't played Eternal Mana but it is on my wish list (I know it was released 20 years ago but it is never too late to play. Incidentally I have just finished Atelier Marie from 1997 too).

If you played them as well you should show yourself anon, because we should be friends!
