Halfway through “A taste for love”
Some thoughts so far...         (as of chapter 16)
-- I like Liza, she’s a fun protagonist. Since this is a pride and prejudice retelling, she’s very reminiscent of Elizabeth. She stands out from a good chunk of YA protagonists in the sense that she’s pretty against love
-- I love the baking theme, but since I’m a huge foodie, it’s no surprise
-- Her relationship with her mom is interesting. It reminds me of Frankly in Love where the parent-child relationship takes a big role in the book. I feel like I like the tension of her mom not really supporting her dreams and feeling compared to her sister are interesting, but the matchmaking part on the other hand...
-- On the matchmaking: I’m not totally buying this plot. It seems believable to me that her mom would meddle with her love life, but to the point she would change her entire baking competition to only include suitors? Especially when it’s implied that a good chunk of their bakeries reputation is riding on this competition, and you’re letting your rival be a judge, you’re going to let people who barely know how to cook just because they could be potential matches for your daughter?? I just have a hard time taking any of this seriously
-- Then there is James, who is okay at this point. I’ll admit he’s kind of interesting, but the conflict between him and Liza can feel really forced. Half of the time I just feel like she’s angry at him to be angry, he acts like a jerk just so there can be a conflict with them. Some parts work, I feel like the author is kind of capturing that P&P energy where James is beginning to fall for Liza but she still sees him as her rival. Admittedly Liza is also beginning to catch feelings, but it feels shallow? Like some of the first positive things she thinks about him is “he’s hot” rather thant you know, like his personality or something
-- I like most of the supporting cast though. I like her relationship with her sister, Ben might be one of my favorite characters, I like Grace and Sarah although we don’t a lot with them.
Anyways it will be interesting to see how the baking competition develops, it already feels a bit out there, but it could honestly be a really fun plot. I hope Liza/James develops more naturally. And I feel like Nathan will be the Wickham of this book which is kind of concerning... although I hope this means that Jeannie gets out of the modeling buisness because it doesn’t seem to be the best for her. Until next time!!  再见
