Switching from Darrow's to Lysander's POV is wild. We go from 'Atalantia and the whole Ash legions must be destroyed they are our mortal enemy threatening the Republic' to 'omg hi guys I missed you so much, Ajax remember when we were kids...'

Am I crazy in feeling like this was a bit... Idk what word to use... Groomy??
Tumblr media
Like I'm not saying her initial intentions were to diddle Lysander, obviously but it definitely has the vibes of "let me be nice to this kid now so i can use him later" which is like...
Does not help that they have a sexual relationship in this book 🧍🧍😭

*** Dark Age Spoilers!!***
The one bit of smut we get from the Red Rising Saga is between Lysander and Atalantia.
Darrow and Mustang
Sevro and Victra
Cassius and Literally Anyone
Fuck it i’d even prefer Dido and Romulus or a cheeky Pebble and Clown
That was absolutely criminal and frankly it was also down right diabolical.
This is the bad place

So, I've always hated Julia au Bellona for the hurt she caused Cassius in Golden Son. This scene with her in Light Bringer had me laughing though. The whole making a show of counting followed by the dramatic sigh was something I could see Cassius doing. She also had some other funny moments in the book that show that Cassius probably got a lot of his sense of humor from her.

Darrow is so savage
It didn't occur to me until now how Darrow just straight up throws Atalantia's words back in her face when she called to gloat about the Day of Red Doves.
Because she's like:
"Don't you find it peculiar? The human conviction that we are the heirs of history instead of paragraphs that are almost over. A survival mechanism, no doubt."
And then 5 minutes later, Darrow's like:
"You are what's lacking. Just the last-loved daughter of a butcher. I imagine you have convinced yourself it was because you were misunderstood. A survival mechanism, I imagine. But I knew Magnus. I fought him for almost a decade. We had chats like this, he and I. Though he never babbled like you, and we had a mutual understanding not to atomize every plot of ground we couldn't take. You were not misunderstood by your father, Atalantia. You were simply disliked. Aja was his pride. Moira was his joy. You were just... there with you silk and your Venusian orgies. Acting out to get attention. And now you're his last resort. The pitiable last sentence of a family saga that is almost over."
The cruel irony of it all just makes me horny for Darrow

Julia makes a show of counting and sighs as if it’s out of her hands.
“He’s right, Atalantia.”
“Oh, fuck off,” Atalantia mutters.
“You fuck off. On what grounds do you interject, young man?”
(……..)
“No,” Atalantia says. “It is my floor. The opportunity for discussion has passed. Go back to your seat, boy.”
“Au Grimmus, what am I holding?” Lady Bellona wiggles her staff of office.

Honestly just from the pieces that have been laid out over the tetralogy so far, I feel like Atalantia is the one who makes the most sense as the Big Bad of the IG tetralogy, because when you look at what's happened so far, everything in Iron Gold, Dark Age, and Light Bringer happened either because or in reaction to her decisions and actions one way or another.
She was the one who sent Julia and Asmodeus to present the fake peace offer to Darrow, and then sent Julia to Luna when Darrow did the Iron Rain, leading to both Darrow's fugitive arc and half the Republic fleet being called away from Mercury, allowing her to ambush the rest and trap the free legions on the surface.
Darrow was able to rescue Orion in the prologue of Dark Age because Atlas was transporting her into orbit for Atalantia to interrogate w/ the same kind of brain-reading tech that Virginia used.
Lilath and the Abomination brought the Rim into the war and caused the Day of Red Doves specifically because Atalantia asked them to. Which led to Virginia and Sevro's capture, which ultimately led to Sevro ending up on Venus, and then Darrow saving him from there.
Atalantia sponsored and helped Atlas plan out the details for Volsung Fa's takeover of the Alltribe and subsequent campaign against the Rim, which led to the Rim fleets retreating from Mars, derailing Lysander's schemes against her.
But Lysander? Everything he's accomplished in the series is ultimately because, much like being born a Gold, he lucked into it.
He would never have gone to the Rim, and then to Mercury if Ascomanni hadn't decided to attack the ship Seraphina was on.
He would never have been able to destroy that one Storm God if Kalindora hadn't called in his old Praetorians.
The only reason he avoided dying in a sandstorm or being captured by the Republic afterwards in the Ladon after the battle is because he happened to find a hydra nest to hide in.
The only reason he was able to capture Atlas and infiltrate Heliopolis by freeing Alex and the Arcosian knights is because he happened to fall into one of the Gorgons' booby traps.
He was only able to orchestrate the ceasefire between Apollonius and the Carthii because Sevro's bomb when Darrow came to rescue him gave Asmodeus an excuse to invade the Dockyards.
He was only able to tag along to the Rim and get involved there, and ultimately get his hands on his new genocidal bioweapon, because Rhone first decided to poison him, and then his allies happened to work up the nerve to wake him up in time for him to leave for Jupiter with Diomedes.
To paraphrase our beloved Reaper, Atalantia is a snake, Lysander is a worm.
LB Unpopular opinion, maybe: I cannot buy Lysander as ultimate villain. He is the same pathetic little worm with a new genocidal weapon to play with.
