Everything I Watched in 2019
Movies
The number in parentheses is year of release, asterisks denote a re-watch, and titles in bold are my favourite watches of the year.
01 The Death of Stalin (17) does a neat trick of building goodwill for Steve Buscemi’s Krushchev, then brutally pays that off in the last few minutes.
02 Sorry to Bother You (18)
03 Support the Girls (18)
04 Paddington (14)*
05 Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (16)
06 Eighth Grade (18) probably the most terrifying movie I watched all year, if you didn’t watch it through your fingers, who even are you?
07 Morvern Callar (02) much less bleak than the book, but then, nearly anything would be
08 The Favourite (18) revolting and beautiful.
09 Columbus (17) a really lovely movie about architecture and parent-child relationships.
10 Bring it On (00)*
11 The Land of Steady Habits (18) feels wackier than your average Holofcener, but still a good watch.
12 Spotlight (15) i was really bowled over by this, and wasn’t expecting to be. Workmanlike filmmaking, but an extraordinary story, well-told.
13 The Killing of a Sacred Deer (17) Barry Keoghan is a blank, but somehow compelling screen presence. This one has an ending that made me bark with laughter.
14 Legends of the Fall (94)
15 Moneyball (11)* if you don’t feel like watching anything in particular, you can always watch Moneyball
16 If Beale St Could Talk (18) very beautiful, but I failed to connect with it on any other level.
17 For Keeps (88)
18 Abducted in Plain Sight (17)
19 Oscar Shorts (Animated) (18) the offerings were very sappy this year, but the winner was decent! Lots of Toronto content (weird).
20 Oscar Shorts (Live Action) (18) *unquestionably* the worst one of these won ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
21 Velvet Buzzsaw (19)
22 Vice (18) ugh
23 Friends with Money (06)
24 Can You Ever Forgive Me (18)
25 Bohemian Rhapsody (18) haha what. was. that.
26 Mars Attacks (96)*
27 Paddington 2 (18)
28 Buffy the Vampire Slayer (92)*
29 Shoplifters (18)
30 Blindspotting (18) jacked Ethan Embry in a supporting role?! Whither? Howso? Wherefore?
31 Witness (85)
32 Harry & the Hendersons (87)*
33 The Matrix (99)*
34 T2 Trainspotting (17)
35 Blockers (18)

37 Can’t Hardly Wait (98)*
38 Avengers: Infinity War (18)
39 Iron Man II (10)
40 Isle of Dogs (18)
41 Chinatown (74)*
42 To Live & Die in LA (85)
43 Age of Innocence (93) Daniel Day-Lewis manages to make Newland Archer compelling, where in the novel he’s...the worst?!
44 Shopgirl (05)*
45 The House (17) didn’t sustain all the way through, but then, that’s how mainstream comedies often go.
46 The Beguiled (17)
47 Badlands (73)*
48 Poetic Justice (93)
49 The Empire Strikes Back (80)*
50 Calibre (18)
51 The Kindergarten Teacher (18)
52 Hounds of Love (17) a nice little Aussie thriller, set in the 80s
53 Kicking & Screaming (95)*
54 Octopussy (83)*
55 Jaws (79)*
56 Lover Come Back (61)
57 Frenzy (72)
58 Always Be My Maybe (19)
59 Certain Women (16) took a while to get to this one, but it’s as great as they say it is.
60 Baby Driver (17) all flash, little substance.
61 Sneakers (92)
62 Roadhouse (87)*
63 Bull Durham (88)*
64 Ghostbusters (84)*
65 Booksmart (19) I think this will improve on multiple viewings, though I loved the soundtrack and the mix of characters.
66 Hereditary (18)
67 Rebecca (40) George Sanders as Rebecca’s cousin is BRILLIANT
68 Vertigo (58)*
69 The Dead Don’t Die (19)

78 White House Down (13)* Channing Potatum saves the White House!
79 The Film Worker (17)
80 Whitney (18)
81 Mascot (16)
82 Apocalypse Now (79)* technically I’d only seen the Redux version from the early 2000s, so the regular cut is new to me.
83 Apollo 13 (95)*
84 Psycho 2 (83) the twist is very guessable, but there are a couple of nice-looking scenes.
85 Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (04)*
86 The Bodyguard (92)*
87 Murder Mystery (19)
88 Wildlife (18)

109 She’s Gotta Have it (86)
110 Good Morning (59)
111 Hustlers (19) I didn’t connect with this as much as the reviews led me to believe I might.
112 Nocturnal Animals (16)
113 Kill Bill Vol 1 (03) I’d only ever seen the second one before, being a non-Tarantino completionist.
114 Fried Green Tomatoes (91)* I watch this more than anticipated...

116 Notting Hill (99)*
117 A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (19) the tiny city models were inspired!
118 National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (89)*
119 Let It Snow (19)
120 Frozen (13)
121 The Irishman (19) most interesting as a sort of pastiche/reckoning on the part of Scorsese about his other gangster films. Really outmoded view of unions. Definitely could have been edited down if anyone were able to come to it without undue reverence, but I did love the bit about the fish.
122 Girls Trip (17) actual plot is beside the point.
123 About a Boy (02)* I always think of this as the “vomit and sweaters” movie, anyone else?
124 Animal House (78)*
DOCUMENTARY : FICTION - 4:120
THEATRE : HOME - 9:115
TV Series
01 Russian Doll - I think I would have enjoyed this more if it hadn’t been bingeable - would have made a nice week-by-week discussion sort of show. I loved to watch the changes between re-ups of our major characters, and I think the actual plotting would reward re-watches.
02 Catastrophe S4 - A satisfying ending to an excellent show, with very charismatic leads (and deeply weird supporting characters). Had to write around Carrie Fisher’s death, and I’m sure did a better job of it than Star Wars did.
03 Friends from College S2 - More of the same, which is what I was after. A show like cotton candy (but with more infidelity).
04 High Maintenance S3 - A lot more of this season took place outside of New York City, which was a great change of pace. And a great deal more information about The Guy and his own life; both difficulties and successes included.
05 Losers - This was a great little docuseries on Netflix that I didn’t hear a lot of people talking about - it’s about sports losses, but unusual sports ie curling, figure skating and the like. You’d think it would get repetitive, being as it’s always about recovering after loss, but it doesn’t! I wish they would make another season….
06 Shrill - a tight six episode dramedy about an alt-weekly journalist in the Pacific Northwest, based on Lindy West’s memoir of the same name. John Cameron Mitchell as her boss (based on Dan Savage) stands out of the ensemble cast, as does Annie’s roommate played by a British standup Lolly Adefope.
07 Broad City S5 - I haven’t always kept up with Broad City, but I came back to it for its final season, and thought it did a good job of setting its characters up for big changes in their lives.
08 I Think You Should Leave - It’s easy to assume that all sketch comedy is terrible and always will be, but then you see this, and throw your TV out the window (due to all the laffs)
09 Fleabag S2 - Everything you’ve heard is true, this season is goddamn hilarious and ridiculously sexy. A huge step up from the first season, which was already pretty fantastic and incisive.
10 Fosse/Verdon - Musicals are not particularly my bag, so I’m sure there was a lot that I missed in terms of references, but the lead performances ably carried me through all of the time jumps and various performances.
11 Stranger Things S3 - Say it after me: d-i-m-i-n-i-s-h-i-n-g r-e-t-u-r-n-s! Maya Hawke kills it, though.
12 Big Little Lies S2 - Unnecessary, and (if possible) even sillier than the first season.
13 Lorena - Part of the ongoing quest to rehabilitate the maligned women of the 1990s, this gave me tons of context that I had no idea about at the time, due to being a dumb kid.
14 Glow S3 - I felt like I was losing steam on this series this year, but episodes like the camping ep kept me coming back. A great ensemble, though some unusual character choices (like a certain kiss *cough*) took me out of it by times.
15 Lodge 49 S1-3 - I’d kept hearing about this show, so I finally sought it out. I can’t say it was amazingly compelling (I almost dropped it after the first season) but it’s definitely an oddball of a show, slipping from setpiece to setpiece with little regard for logic. For me, a background show.
16 Chernobyl - This show really gave me the Bad Feeling, humans were definitely A Mistake.
17 On Becoming a God in Central Florida - Kiki in a trashy mode, not as infinitely appealing as the version she pulled off in the second season of Fargo, but scrappy and industrious nonetheless.
18 Show Me a Hero - I’d put off watching this for years, it felt like it was going to be too dull (housing policy in Yonkers?) but it’s great, and larded up with Bruce Springsteen songs, obvs.
19 Great British Bake Off S9-S10 - I’d also held off on watching this for a long time, out of loyalty to Mel, Sue, and Mary Berry. But I needed some comfort viewing towards the end of the summer, and the new hosts and judge do an able job, although the show’s tropes are feeling a bit well-worn at this point.
20 Righteous Gemstones S1 - A rollicking ride for sure, with a great cast. Your mileage/patience with Danny McBride may vary, so keep that in mind, naturally.
21 This Way Up S1 - A small show starring the fabulous Aisling Bea, about mental health and families and some nice comic physical acting. Oh, and in case you were watching The Crown and crushing on Tobias Menzies’ version of Prince Phillip, he plays a hot dad love interest in this, which gives you all the Tobias you’re looking for, without the PP racisms.
22 The Crown S3 - This is the first season of the big cast switchover, and I thought it stuck reasonably well, once we were in it an episode or two. This season concentrated even less on Elizabeth herself, preferring her sister, husband, and (newly!) her children.

Looks like we finally have a name to that rookie Doc flipped over at Thomasville, Leroy Hemings. I imagine Leroy probably dominated the Piston Cup circuit after Doc's departure until one day, much like Lightning McQueen, he's leading a race with a few laps to go when he hears a loud "MEEP MEEP!" behind him right before a bright blue Plymouth Superbird rockets past for the win.
GUYS. DO YOU GET IT? LEROY “HEMI”NGS. HE’S FASTER ‘CAUSE HE’S GOT THAT NEW HEMI ENGINE. OH, PIXAR, YOU SUBTLE THING, YOU. I’M ON TO YOU.
Right, anyhow. You’ve signed up for Fun Fast Facts with Em! This service cannot be unsubscribed from, so buckle up and enjoy the ride!
The ‘54/’55 Chrysler 300s were the top of their field back in the day, as we know. However, their top speed out on the circuit was only about 130 miles an hour (and when I say ‘only’, remember, this is on dirt so that’s pretty freaking fast). With the muscle car wars starting in the ‘60s, it’s unlikely the 300s survived more than a handful of years as the fastest things out there. Such is life. As Brick’s sponsor says “All sports change.” and racing changes rather quickly.
Now fast forward to ‘69 and ‘70. Chrysler’s “winged warrior” aero cars make their debut. The Dodge Daytona is the first car to break 200 mph on the circuit (in Talladega). The Daytonas and the Superbirds dominate those seasons. By this time they’re racing on asphalt super speedways like we see today for the most part.
Anywho, TL;DR, there’s no feasible way these two cars ever competed with each other in real life. The technology between times was just too far apart for that to make sense.
THAT BEING SAID. I ACTUALLY LOVE THIS HC.
Ignoring real life parallels, I actually think this is a hilarious idea. Why? Because it’s basically accepted that Strip’s generation was the ‘next-gens’ of their time. So the parallel holds true that Strip was to Leroy what Jackson was to McQueen (minus the attitude and trust issues, mind you).
But what really gets me? The fact that if this headcanon were true, it would imply Strip never got rid of his factory Road Runner horn, and actually used to use it on the track. And that, my friend, is why I am sitting over here laughing, yearning for canon material on young rookie Strip Weathers.

This Spectacular ’70 Plymouth Superbird Is Ready to Fly
This strange-looking racing masterpiece is one of the coolest cars ever.
There's no air conditioning, the radio only receives AM programming, and it overheats because of the small air inlet in the front. But that's okay. Because this car was designed almost solely to run from zero to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds in a straight line and circle an oval as fast as possible. Built after the success of the similar Dodge Charger Daytona in 1969, Plymouth created the 1970 Roadrunner Superbird to lure race-car legend Richard Petty back to its team. It worked, and Petty went on to win eight NASCAR races competing against other aerodynamically enhanced models like the Ford Talladega and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II.
This Superbird in particular is one of the few that Chrysler sold to the public, and it remains as odd-looking and awesome as the day it rolled off the assembly line. This car has been restored to its original glory with Torch Red paint applied to its laser-straight body. The interior has been redone in white with bucket seats, a center console, and floor shifter. Also included is the factory AM-only radio and Rallye gauges with the iconic Tic-Toc-Tach. Under the hood it has a date-code-correct 440-cubic-inch V-code six-barrel engine backed by its original, numbers-matching automatic transmission and rear end. Also included are power steering and brakes. Also who could forget the classic decal of the Roadrunner from Looney Tunes on the massive rear spoiler? ตารางบอล7m

NASCAR may be the fastest road to learning about physics
New Post has been published on https://nexcraft.co/nascar-may-be-the-fastest-road-to-learning-about-physics/
NASCAR may be the fastest road to learning about physics
The laws of physics are on display at the Daytona International Speedway. (Action Sports Photography/Shutterstock.com/)
There’s just something thrilling about traveling at high speeds. Throughout history people have always pushed themselves to go faster, whether on foot, on horseback, on a boat, or on a bicycle.
Nearly every weekend, today’s speed lovers can live vicariously by watching their favorite NASCAR drivers race around the track at death-defying speeds.
Maybe it’s the excitement in the crowd or maybe it’s the constant threat of danger that draws people to the sport. Or maybe its the feats of science and engineering that pull some spectators in. As a physicist, I love seeing all the physics principles on display during a NASCAR race.
Speed
NASCAR drivers travel at extremely high speeds, more than 200 miles per hour. They accelerate so quickly that it takes them only around 3 to 3.5 seconds to go from zero to 60 mph. During this acceleration, the car must exert an average of 2,600 lbs of horizontal force against the track. This is comparable to the bite force of a large American crocodile or what it would take to lift a full-grown buffalo.
According to Einstein’s theory of special relativity, the faster you move through space, the slower your passage of time. So it’s fair to say that speed demon NASCAR drivers age a very tiny bit less than the rest of us. At the end of a 3.5-hour race, the drivers have aged about 0.5 nanoseconds less than the spectators who stayed still. If a driver raced nonstop at 200 mph for the next 50 years, he would age 70 microseconds less than the rest of us.
While NASCAR drivers are moving at incredibly fast speeds compared to the crowds in the stands, their speeds are small compared to what Einstein had in mind—like how fast light can travel, 670 million mph. The effect of relativity at the track is small, but it does exist.
The track
So how are drivers able to obtain these speeds?
As a car enters a turn, it naturally wants to continue in the direction it was originally going. To change direction to follow the curve of the oval-shaped track, a force must be applied.
The necessary force comes from the friction between the tires and the track. Friction is the connection between the two that prevents them from sliding against one another.
So for drivers, it’s a balancing act—they want to keep the pedal to the metal, but they can’t go so fast on a curve that their speed overpowers the maneuvering ability provided by friction. Go too quickly and the friction may not be enough to prevent the car from continuing in its original direction and sliding straight into the wall. Slow down too much and you fall behind the competition.
The banking of the track helps cars make those high-speed turns. (Tim Trad/Unsplash, CC BY/)
The way the track is designed can help out here. The turns are banked, meaning they are higher on the outside of the track and lower toward the center. Part of the force of the road pushing up on the car—what physicists call the normal force—assists the frictional force of the tires and helps the car make it around the turn.
Banking in the turns at some of the fastest race tracks is comparable to the steepness of a playground slide. Banking at Richmond International Raceway allows cars to go approximately 1.3 times faster than they could without banking. Larger curves and higher banking, like those seen at Daytona and Talladega, allow the drivers to maintain a higher speed as they round those corners.
Power
Power is a measure of energy converted from one form to another in a set amount of time. In stock car racing, this conversion is from the chemical energy stored in gasoline to the kinetic energy of motion.
A NASCAR engine produces around 750 [horsepower)(https://www.popsci.com/what-is-horsepower/) (560 kW), which exceeds a similar model street car that tops out around 300 horsepower. During a race, the power conversion of a NASCAR engine is about 500 times the power usage of the typical American household during the same period of time.
The cars’ power comes from burning gas as the engine rotates. The rotation of a NASCAR engine is 3.5 times faster than a standard street car and much more efficient, allowing it to combust more quickly and produce more power.
Collisions
With the high speed and power of stock cars come the risks of dangerous collisions. Some of the hardest crashes in NASCAR register around 80 G’s—that is, 80 times the acceleration of gravity that holds you to the planet. For perspective, amusement park rides top out around 6 G’s.
Safety elements try to extend the time, distance, and area over which any collision takes place in an effort to lower these high forces. The principle is similar to the way gradually coming to a stop is less jarring than slamming on the brakes or the way a bed of nails spreads the weight of your body over a large area versus lying on a single nail.
SAFER barriers along the outside wall of the race track are made to crumple and dissipate a crash’s force over a large area. The front end of the car itself is also made to crumple, which extends the time of impact.
Safety elements inside a NASCAR vehicle go way beyond the seatbelt you have in your car. (Action Sports Photography/Shutterstock.com/)
Carbon fiber seats in the car absorb more impact energy compared to aluminum seats. They stabilize the driver by wrapping around the rib cage and shoulders, and spread the impact force over a larger area.
A 5-point harness connects the driver to the car, once again spreading the area of impact. It also attaches the driver to the car, so he or she slows with the crumpling car rather than continuing forward at full speed until impact.
So next time you head to the track or tune in on TV, ponder some of the physics of NASCAR, as well as the contributions of scientists and engineers working behind the scenes to improve the speed, power, and safety of the sport.

Will a big-name driver fail to advance to the third round of the playoffs?
yahoo
Talladega chaos means the charge to fill the eight-driver field for the third round of the playoffs could be pretty dramatic at Kansas.
With Martin Truex Jr. and Brad Keselowski locked in to the third round thanks to their wins at Charlotte and Talladega, there are six spots left to be filled on Sunday. And with 30 points separating third through 10th in the standings — remember the max total a driver can earn in a race is 60 — there’s a pretty good chance a driver currently on the outside of the top eight will advance to the third round.
That could be good news for Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth. And bad news for Jimmie Johnson or Ryan Blaney. Here’s how the points standings look heading into the sixth race of the playoffs and the chances we think each driver has of advancing
3. Kyle Larson, 3,096 points: Larson has the best odds of anyone thanks to his top-15 finish at Talladega despite some serious crash damage. He’s consistently had the fastest Chevrolet at intermediate tracks this season and that bodes well for Sunday, though he has just two top-10 finishes in seven starts at Kansas. Only disaster keeps Larson out of the third round. Chance of advancing: 85 percent
4. Kevin Harvick, 3,089: Harvick has finished third at Chicago and Charlotte so far in the playoffs. Oh, and he finished third at Kansas earlier in the season. A third-place finish easily puts him into the third round and given Harvick’s consistency, it wouldn’t be surprising in the slightest to see it happen. Chance of advancing: 85 percent
5. Denny Hamlin, 3,088: Hamlin finished a place behind Harvick at Chicago and Charlotte and has won at Kansas before. He finished 15th at Kansas a year ago and was second in 2014. As long as his pit-road speeding habits from a year ago don’t come back, he should be in good shape too. Chance of advancing: 75 percent
6. Chase Elliott, 3,087: Spoiler tape aside, Elliott’s team has found speed at intermediate tracks in the playoffs. He was second at Charlotte after his encumbered second-place finish at Charlotte. The odds are against it, but you may want to go place a bet on a top four of Truex Jr., Elliott, Harvick and Hamlin happening for a third-straight 1.5-mile race. It’d probably have a nice payout. Chance of advancing: 70 percent
7. Ryan Blaney, 3,076: Here’s where the odds start to decrease significantly. Blaney has shown speed on intermediate tracks this year, but there’s no denying that the cars at Joe Gibbs Racing have been faster, especially recently. Blaney is close enough to Kyle Busch in the points standings that Busch could win a stage or two and leap over Blaney even if he doesn’t win the race. And there’s that whole Jimmie Johnson factor too. Chance of advancing: 65 percent
nbc_sports
8. Jimmie Johnson, 3,074: Do you want to bet against Johnson and crew chief Chad Knaus in an elimination race? If Johnson qualifies in the top five on Friday he’s going to be a great bet to score some needed stage points in the first stage. That’s been his nemesis all year. He started 14th at Chicago and 25th at Charlotte before getting top-10 finishes in each. Chance of advancing: 75 percent
9. Kyle Busch, 3,067: Busch started in the top five at Chicago and Charlotte and also started fifth at Kansas in the spring. He won the first stage in two of those races and it’s easy to see him doing that again. Oh, and he won at Kansas in 2016. What we’re saying is that despite his position outside the top eight, we’re bullish on his chances of getting through either with a win or on points. Chance of advancing: 70 percent
10. Matt Kenseth, 3,066: Kenseth could point himself into the third round, but it seems a bit of a stretch for him to get his first win of the season in a situation like this. It would be one hell of a story if he did, however, given how getting spun out of the lead in 2015 at Kansas started the downward spiral of his title chances. Chance of advancing: 55 percent
11. Ricky Stenhouse Jr., 3,052: This is where things start to get farfetched. Stenhouse needed to win or at least have a much better showing than he did at Talladega. Asking him to score a bunch of points at an intermediate track is a stretch. He needs some serious help from other drivers having bad days. Chance of advancing: 15 percent
12. Jamie McMurray, 3,045: McMurray needs to win. He’s not mathematically eliminated, but the odds are poor. And McMurray hasn’t won yet this year. Finishing 8th probably isn’t going to cut it. Chance of advancing: 5 percent

Who’s Still Contending After The Hollywood Casino 500?
Who will Lady Luck smile upon in the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas? Yes, expect your share of cheesy gambling puns. Some will have to go “all in” to even have a shot. Some will get nuts, others may roll snake eyes.
THE LONG SHOTS
If you’re a betting fan, and you like long shots, there are two obvious choices. Jamie McMurray has historically been good enough to be considered a solid top twenty driver (no shame in that), but the Hollywood Casino 400 will likely be where he gets cleaned out. Consistency has never really been his calling card, and wins have been infrequent. To boot, Kansas has never been his playground. Sorry, Jamie Mac.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. is another driver that’s going to need to reach back for something special to make the final eight. Whatever it is about Kansas, he hasn’t figured it out.
COUNTING CARDS
Some don’t need pocket bullets to survive. There are those competitors that know what’s going on, and can play skillfully the cards they’ve been dealt. It’s really hard to imagine that JGR’s Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth won’t make it past Kansas without remaining in playoff contention. Talladega was his mulligan. You throw out that finish, Rowdy is strong. Heck, a Kyle Busch victory could most certainly be in the cards in the Hollywood Casino 400.
The odds for Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson may not be quite as favorable. Neither appear to be in their top form. By the same token, they are proven winners and have a nice stack of chips. Johnson probably stands a better chance of surviving than Kenseth, but this fan expects both will make it through.
HOW ABOUT A HAND?
Some players need a decent hand to make it. In racing, some drivers are less likely to overcome bad luck or a bad piece to make it through. This is where experience is valuable.
To that end, youngsters Ryan Blaney and Chase Elliott may be a bit vulnerable. The Hollywood Casino 400 could go quite well for them. They could get cleaned out. If bad luck plagues the other drivers on the bubble, Blaney and Elliott would go through. I’d say these two are 50/50. Maybe Elliott is more like a 60/40 or a 70/30. He’s a little more consistent.
PLAYING IT WELL
Though bad- as in bad luck- is a “b” word, it’s hard to conceive Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick and Kyle Larson not passing through the Hollywood Casino 400 in fine form. They’ve got the skill, they’ve got the cars. Though truth is stranger than fiction, the odds rest in the favor of this portion of the field.
PLAYING WITH HOUSE MONEY
Martin Truex Jr. and Brad Keselowski have a play date Sunday. They’ll still be at the table for the next round. Even though they don’t HAVE to win, it wouldn’t surprise if they did anyway.

On eve of inauguration, Trump addresses nation in shadow of Lincoln
Trump spoke at the Lincoln Memorial, where Martin Luther King Jr declared I have a dream, and told the largely white crowd: Youre not forgotten any more
Donald Trump staked his claim to Washington on Thursday by promising to make America great again while at the feet of the US capitals giant marble statue of Abraham Lincoln in a celebration of patriotic music, military pageantry and fireworks.
The president-elect delivered a brief speech from the Lincoln Memorial, close to the spot where in 1963 Martin Luther King Jr declared, I have a dream. Trump told the largely white crowd: Youre not forgotten any more.
On a cold night of heavy and sometimes heavy handed symbolism ahead of Fridays inauguration, Trump led thousands of supporters in chants of make America great again, saying: And Ill add, greater than ever before. A spectacular array of fireworks shot into the sky and spelled: U-S-A as the Battle Hymn of the Republic rang out.
Accompanied by his wife, Melania, and other family members, he then walked up the steps and spent the better part of a minute silently contemplating the seated Lincoln, the president who won the civil war and helped end slavery. His celebrated Gettysburg address and second inaugural address are inscribed on the chamber walls.
Supporters lined the pool at the National Mall, many wearing Make America great again baseball caps and other regalia, though the area was far from full and some left early as temperatures plummeted after dark. Nearby were the Vietnam war memorial and ghostly figures of soldiers at the Korean war memorial.
But it was the juxtaposition with Trumps fellow Republican Lincoln, the 16th and arguably greatest US president, that was most striking. Hollywood actor Jon Voight, a vocal Trump supporter, told the crowd: President Lincoln who sits here with us Im sure is smiling knowing we will be led by an honest and good man, who will work for all their people no matter their creed or colour. We will see a renewed America.
Some observers, however, found the choice of the Lincoln Memorial jarring. Keith Stiggers, 25, who is African American, said: When I saw that I was like, wow! Probably a lot of his supporters dont like Lincoln and his legacy for the country. Is he going to uphold that legacy or is he going to do what he can to step on it?
Stiggers, a law student, had come with his fiance to support democracy and feels that Fridays inaugural address will be crucial. I think he should definitely build bridges. He got a lot of support from the alt-right and now he should make it clear he is governing for all Americans. His speech is going to be very important; its going to dictate the pace of his presidency.
The free welcome celebration had begun just after 4pm with military marching, music and pageantry, including the national anthem, followed by a change of gear with drummer DJ Ravidrums (Ravi Jakhotia), who has served as a personal DJ for Hugh Hefner. Behind him giant TV screens flashed the names of every US state.
There were performances from soul singer Sam Moore and an improvised country music group, laden with patriotism. Eventually Trump and his wife, Melania, appeared to the soundtrack of The Rolling Stones Heart of Stone. The president-elect turned to give Lincoln a military salute before descending the steps to chants of Trump! Trump! Trump!
They joined other family members behind protective glass to watch artists including the Piano Guys Its time to put all our differences aside rock band 3 Doors Down, Lee Greenwood and country singer Toby Keith, who was introduced as one of the most popular artists in history. Trump is said to have had trouble attracting A-list stars to appear at the event.
Tom Barrack, president of the presidential inauguration committee, then introduced the TV celebrity and businessman turned politician. I would like you to pay tribute to the courage, to the strength, to the loyalty of this man, he said.
Trump, holding a microphone in his left hand, thanked his supporters and said: Im just the messenger … Its a movement like weve never seen anywhere in the world, they say … its something thats very, very special. The phrase, you all know it, half of you are wearing the hat: make America great again.
Trump reflected on the noisy rallies of his election effort, which few observers thought would lead to Fridays ceremonies 18 months ago. There was never an empty seat, like tonight, he said. We all knew that last month of the campaign … we knew that something special was happening.
The polls started going up, up, up, but they didnt want to give us credit. Because they forgot about a lot of us. When the campaign started I called it the forgotten man and forgotten woman. Well, youre not forgotten any more.
The crowd cheered. Trump promised to bring jobs back, and not let other countries take US jobs any longer, while also rebuilding the military.

We are going to do things that havent been done in our country for many, many decades, I promise you.
Washington is a Democratic stronghold where Trump polled less than 5% in the election, but his supporters relished their time in the capital.
Chris Lehman, 55, a maintenance supervisor from Belmar, New Jersey, said: Its thrilling to be here today. This is a historic event. Weve got a president again whos proud of the country and will bring jobs back to the country. Its a good feeling. Hes brought jobs back even before hes taken the keys to the office yet. Unfortunately hell probably spend the first 20 days undoing the garbage President Obama did at the end to slow him down.
Lehman, 55, booked his hotel in nearby Baltimore before the election because he was so confident of Trumps victory. You dont become a billionaire by losing and not knowing what youre doing, he said. He speaks his heart and he speaks his mind. You know what hes saying is the truth, and youve got to love a president like that. He doesnt owe anybody anything. He can come in and do this right.
Shannon Wilburn, 48, who runs a Christian youth centre, travelled with a friend from Roby, Texas, for her first visit to the US capital. We just wanted to be here as patriotic Americans. Its a bucket list thing to see a swearing in of a president. I do believe Donald Trump is a Christian. One of the biggest things is his pro-life stance and, as a Christ follower, its very hard to accept someone whos not.
Wilburn said she doubted that Trump will be able to bridge the partisan divide in his inaugural address on Friday. Theyre not even going to give him a day. Look at the Democrats boycotting it. He cant get one day of grace. Thats a little frustrating, I think.
Nearly a million people are expected on the National Mall in Washington for a ceremonial transfer of power that will observe time-honoured traditions and pageantry but usher in profound political uncertainties.
Trump has promised to shake up the postwar liberal order, issued contradictory policy statements and, even before taking office, sparked anger in foreign capitals with his volatile approach. Questions have been raised over the character and temperament of a man who boasted about groping women and still picks fights on Twitter.
Protests are expected on Friday, and a huge womens march is planned for Saturday, as liberals dig in for four years of opposition to Trump, who enters office as the most unpopular of at least the past seven presidents at the beginning of their terms, according to opinion polls.
He also takes power under the shadow of Russias alleged meddling in the presidential election, which has led some Democrats to question his legitimacy. Up to 60 members of Congress will boycott the inauguration ceremony at the US Capitol.
At least 28,000 security personnel from 36 state, local and federal agencies will be deployed for inauguration events, reportedly costing $200m, divided between taxpayers and private donors. Parts of the capital are on lockdown, with steel barriers erected on normally busy streets, to head off disruptive protests.
Trump and his wife, Melania, will on Friday morning go to the White House for tea with Obama and his wife, Michelle, even as house movers work upstairs to swap their private possessions.
The inauguration ceremony will begin with performances by the Talladega Marching Tornadoes, the Rockettes dance troupe, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and 16-year-old singer Jackie Evancho.
At noon, in a scene not so long ago unthinkable to the political establishment, Trump will take the oath of office, administered by Chief Justice John Roberts. He will place his hand on his own Bible a gift from his mother in 1955 as well as a Bible used by Abraham Lincoln at his first inauguration.
In an operatic tableau, standing nearby will be Hillary Clinton, the candidate Trump threatened to jail during the campaign. She received 2.9 million more votes than he did last November but lost the electoral college. Former presidents Bill Clinton, George W Bush and Jimmy Carter will also be present.
Trump will become the first US president in the 240-year-old republic who has never served in the military or held public office. At 70 he will also be the oldest in his first term, eclipsing Ronald Reagans record.
Barrack said Trumps inaugural speech would focus on the issues that unite us and claimed that the divisions from the campaign would vanish. What youll hear in his address is a switch from candidate to president, he told the CBS This Morning show.
