Pairing: Jay Halstead x Reader

Summary: A good save and a case practically solved leads to intelligence almost losing one of their own. Can you get out before it’s too late?

Notes: Canon violence, nothing worse than a typically dark episode. This is a past and present cut together story and it’s just shy of 4k.

Now

Your bleary eyes open up to a cold and damp bedroom. An abandoned… apartment? The peeling wallpaper had given way to yellow stained drywall. From the small window on your left, it appeared as if you were several stories in the air, but there were no distinguishable landmarks that told you if you were even still in Chicago.

As you begin to come to your senses more, you feel the thick rope tied around your wrists and ankles. The rough material burns against you skin and you notice you already have sores.

How long have I been here?

Your memory is fuzzy and your head throbbed violently. It isn’t until you shift uncomfortably that you realize it’s a heavy metal chair you’re tied to.

Slowly your body begins to pick up on the danger your muddled brain had managed to identify and your pulse begins to quicken. As much as you try, your heartbeat continues to pound in your head as you try to twist your arms free.

The pain that responds is only a small price to pay for even the chance of freedom. Desperately, you continue to twist and pull until one of the knots manages to loosen up enough for you to squeeze your hand out. It’s just a short sprint to the front door in front of you.

You will your frozen fingers to work faster as you pinch and tear at each knot and then internally scream at your stiff muscles to carry you forward just a little bit more.

When your hand reaches the doorknob and it isn’t locked, relief floods your system. But when you’re able to wrench the door open, the person behind the door barely registers in your mind before everything goes black once again.

Then

Jay leans against his fist on his desk and tries to keep his frustration at bay. They’d been at this for two days straight and had been on the case for the last three months. “That’s two bodies in as many weeks. Is no one else starting to think…”

“That maybe hunting Chicago’s very own Criminal Minds level serial killer couple is out of our depth?” You interrupt, tilting your head towards him. “Doubt it.”

In fact, over the last two weeks, it’s the only thing you could think about. A younger woman named Madison roped, at least you were hoping she wasn’t a willing participant, into a horrific and violent life by a man you had yet to learn the identity of. You’d spent many nights pacing your bedroom, ranting and theorizing to Jay when all he wanted was just a bit of sleep.

The further you dove into it, however, the less hopeful you became for a quick arrest.

Voight had about ripped your head off when you suggested passing the case to the FBI and got to hear the ‘this is our city’ speech once again. But the truth was you were running out of ideas, running out of leads to chase down the rabbit hole, and running out of time.

“I hate to say it, but Voight’s right.” Antonio almost looks pained, but he continues on before you can question him. “The first time these two surfaced five years ago, CPD went full force. They shut it all down, had every uniform pulling overtime, and tried to smoke them out. Instead, it scared them into hiding.”

“Five girls in three months, Dawson, they’re escalating.” You take a breath before looking him in the eyes. “I can’t keep notifying parents.” There’s a certain pang in your voice only those who have had to watch a parent’s life crumble around them can hear. Jay reaches out to squeeze your forearm for just a bit of comfort and you run your fingers over his.

It’s enough.

“Then we end this.” Voight’s eyeing you, sympathetic to where you’re coming from, but not willing to give up yet. “Let’s find these monsters and make them pay.”

Pinching the bridge of your nose, you nod and turn to Adam. “Ok, let’s go over everything together, see if we can find something we missed.”

“Since it’s all we have, let’s revisit the address on Madison’s unemployment file.” Jay suggests.

Adam looks confused. “The house was condemned last year, torn down in the spring.”

“I know, but what about the name on the house, did anyone look into it?”

“Figured it was a stolen identity.” Kevin pipes up. “Clara Knight, died in 2012 of a heart attack at 66. No other properties in her name.”

“Knight?” Mouse perks up and starts shifting through his files. “I found a few erased emails from a Robert Knight, but I couldn’t find any relation or connection.”

Adam is already typing ferociously. “Got a death certificate for a Robert Knight, 68, died a few months ago. Seems like the guy barely existed.”

“Any children?”

“A daughter.” His face is grim. “Murdered in 99, she was 16.”

The hairs on the back of your neck prickle. “Pull up a picture of her.” You don’t need to see it to confirm what you already feared, but still the image of her face churns your stomach. A beautiful blonde girl with the hope of the whole world in her smile. “He’s been at this a lot longer than anyone thought.”

“Any property still in his name?” Voight asks.

Anxiety rippling through your chest, it feels like an eternity before Mouse nods. “His nephew Isaac put his house in Roseland on a tax form.”

Now

When you come to, the first thing you notice is that your restraints have been changed to zip ties and for a moment you’re concerned about your circulation. You’re worry is cut short by the cup of water on a table to your right, the plastic straw close enough for you to reach it.

The sudden realization of the searing pain in your throat and the cracked skin on your lips lets you know it’s probably been about two days. It’s the dryness of your tongue that overrides every single rational thought of concern that maybe the glass beside you isn’t safe to drink. But, fifteen minutes pass with no incident so whoever it is probably wants to keep you alive.

The thought sends ice down your back.

Alive for what?

“What do you want from me?” You scream into the empty apartment.

Then

“We need a vacation after this.” Jay declares as he leans the seat of the car back a little. “Somewhere warm with water so I can look at you in a tiny bathing suit all day.”

You roll your eyes, but he doesn’t miss the small smile you give before bringing the binoculars up again. “We’ll see what we can do about that.”

“Hey lovebirds.” Adam calls over the radio from the car down the street from yours. “Have you seen anything yet or are you too busy staring into each other’s eyes again?”

It’s Jay’s turn to roll his eyes. “Didn’t you just take your third piss break?”

“Hydration is very important.” He defends.

“I told him to wear the diapers.” Alvin adds. Adam tries to defend himself, but you can barely hear him over Kevin’s laughter next to him.

Just then, out of the corner of your eye, you see the movement of a curtain, the flash of blonde hair, and the air shifts. Jay immediately catches the tense set of your shoulders and starts asking questions.

“They’ve got a girl up there.” You tell him through gritted teeth.

“Are you sure? I didn’t see anything.”

You nod and get out of the car despite the hushed protests from Jay as he follows you. To do what? You weren’t sure yet but you had felt so powerless these last few months that maybe you weren’t being the most rational right now.

The curtain moves again and, rather than getting caught, you quickly spin around and push Jay against the car before crashing your lips to his. Other than a noise of shock sounding from the back of his throat, he doesn’t miss a beat.

“North corner window.” You mumble against his lips and slide your hands up his chest, tilting your head to the side to give him a better angle.

When he pulls away, he brings his phone up and looks you in the eye. “We’ve got confirmation on the nephew Isaac, but he’s got another girl up there. If we bust in, he might get spooked and hurt her.”

It’s quiet longer than either of you would like.

“What should we do, boss?” Adam asks for you.

“Do you think you can get in quietly?” Voight asks.

Jay waits for your nod. “We’re on it. Going silent.”

Picking the lock was nothing. Sneaking around a house you know nothing about except for a quick glance at a blueprint from 2005 was the difficult part. Jay splits the two of you up, sending you upstairs while he clears the lower level. Circumstance didn’t allow you the option to argue with him that splitting up in a situation like this is the worst thing to do.

He was your partner and it was your job to always have his back, as difficult as he makes it, but he’s rounded a corner into the living room before you get the chance to cuff him to you.

Your breath catches in your throat when a step on the stairs creak, but you keep moving until you find a girl in the second room you clear. She’s blind folded with on leg tied to the bed. She tenses when you approach, but relaxes once you’ve gotten close enough to whisper who you are.

“Tracey.” She says he name with a whimper and your heart breaks as you cut the rope and take off her blindfold.

When she sees you’re really who you say you are, she throws herself into your arms and begins to cry. There’s nothing more you want to do than to sit here and comfort her, but your ears picks up on a man’s voice you don’t recognize.

“Ok, Tracey, I know you’re so scared, and I can’t imagine what you’ve been through, but I need you to be brave a little longer.” You pull back and look her in the eyes. “My partner and I came in here alone. I need you to tell me where the man and woman who took you are.”

She nods. “I don’t know where she went, she left a while ago. He’s here, downstairs I think, in his office.”

There’s a crash downstairs, the sound of broken glass and your blood runs cold. Immediately, you look for any other way out, but there’s nothing. No balcony, no window, nothing. Voight’s on the radio already, but you silence him.

“Stay directly behind me.” There’s a kind of urgency in your voice that puts her even more on edge.

Creeping down the stairs, you can hear Jay struggling in the kitchen, but it sounds like he’s holding his own.

“Bringing the girl out.” You whisper into your radio and glance back at Tracey. “As soon as we get down, I want you to run to the door. Do not stop. When you get across the street there are people who will help you.” She nods but she looks terrified. “I swear I won’t let him get anywhere near you.”

It’s the door opening that alerts Isaac that something else is going on. You round the corner with your gun drawn and the scene before you makes your knees weak.

Jay is bruised and cut up, struggling against the man behind him, the arm around his neck, the gun pointed at his head.

“She said you were cops, but I told her she was paranoid.” Isaac snarls.

“Madison? Is she here?” You ask, your voice as level as your gun trained on his head. Voight is yelling over the radio, but you tune him out. “I’d love to meet her.”

He snickers and smiles wickedly. “Even if she could be caught, neither of you will be alive long enough to see it.”

He only manages a twitch before you pull the trigger and land a shot right between his eyes.

Jay falls forward, breathing heavy and you rush towards him. “Jay’s hurt!” You call out when the door is broken down. Adam kicks the gun away from the obviously dead suspect and you let them handle the scene.

“Where does it hurt? Did you get hit? I told you it was stupid to split us up! How’s your breathing?” Your hands are frantically searching every inch of his body. He has to grab your hand and grip it tight in his to stop the assault of questions rapid firing from your lips.

He sits up with a groan and kisses your knuckles when he sees the panic on your face. “I’m okay. Because of you it’s just a few cuts and bruises.” He manages a smile and you almost cry right there.

Voight places a hand on your shoulder. “Tracey is on her way to Med. Medics said she’s going to be okay. We’ve got another bus on the way for you. Nice work you two.”

Now

The creak from the front door opening pulls you from a daze and you wince at the sunlight flooding the room. A blonde woman stands before you with a duffle in her left hand and a gun in her right.

She tilts her head to the side. “You’re still alive. What a shame.”

You struggle to focus your eyes from the concussion you’re assuming she must’ve given you. “Maddison.” You croak out. “What are you doing?”

She drops the duffle next to you and grips your hair to pull your head back, pushing the barrel of the gun into your temple.

“I’m going to make you suffer.” She hisses and roughly lets you go. “I tried to warn him that you were watching us, but he wouldn’t listen.”

“Isaac?”

“Don’t say his name!” She screams and the sound cracks through your skull. “He told me to get some supplies, but when I cam back, I watched from the back window as you murdered him.”

You shake your head and try to reason with her. “Maddison, he was hurting people. He was going to kill my partner.”

“Partner.” She repeats sarcastically. “You mean Jay Halstead, your boyfriend of 3 years?” Maddison moves in front of you to revel in the fear that has filled your eyes and smiles sinisterly. “Yeah, I know who he is.”

You start quickly, the panic in your voice betraying the training you were struggling to hold onto. “If you want to kill me fine, do it. But don’t hurt him, Maddison. Please, he’s done nothing.”

She tsks as she opens the duffle and begins to pull out long metal pieces until finally, a long-barreled shot gun. “Why would I kill you when the alternative is so much better?”

You begin to struggle against the restraints as your mind starts to put together scenario after scenario of awful images. Maddison pays no mind to you begging and pleading to see reason. Instead, she pauses from building some contraption to walk over to you and jam a needle in your neck.

When you come too again, she’s sat casually in front of you. “I thought hitting you in the head again might actually kill you, and that’s not what I’m going for, so… you’re welcome.”

You glance around again and notice the barrel of the shotgun behind you just to the left of your shoulder. “Yeah, thanks.” You deadpan looking back at her. “What’s with the ‘Saw’ set up?”

She raises a brow. “Hold onto that strength while you can.” She points out the wires and hooks running along the floor and ceiling to trace it back to the door in front of you. “I used to be a STEM major. Did you know that?” She doesn’t stop long enough for you to respond. “Turns out I still remember a few things.”

You stare past her towards the door and then look quickly back to the gun, beginning to piece together her plan.

“Yes.” She coos. “It’s exactly what you’re thinking. The first person that opens that door, if he happens to be the right height, will get a life ending shot to the face. And I’d like to ask you what the chances are that anyone other than your boyfriend will be the first through the door.”

None.

For the first time you feel utterly defeated, hopeless. Madison watches closely, soaking in every moment of your anguish.

“Now you’ll know what it feels like.”

Then

You phone buzzes for the fourth time in the last hour. “Yes?”

“He’s actually insufferable, where are you?” Will speaks quickly, his tone seeping in irritation.

You laugh. “April already sent me out to get him food because he was whining so much. I am in route with a burger and some other stuff from his favorite place. Should be there in 15.”

“Thank god.” He says quietly. “Would you give it a rest? She’s 15 out with enough food to hopefully put you in a coma so I don’t have to.” You laugh as Will continues to yell at his brother.

“I almost died! Where’s your compassion?” You hear Jay yell back and only laugh harder

“You have ONE bruised rib and a concussion. I’ve seen high school football players handle worse with less complaining!”

“If it’s not so bad, why won’t you let me leave?!”

“I’m stepping up the pace, be there soon.” You laugh and hang up.

The Chicago night was chilly, but something else causes the hairs on the back of your neck begin to prickle. You don’t stop walking, don’t even pause a single step. Instead, you glance in a shop window and catch the reflection of a woman, a flash of blonde, not too far behind you.

Casually, you switch the bag of food to your other hand, but before you’re able to grab your gun, there’s a pinch in your neck and everything goes black.

Now

Jay had forced his way back to work sooner than anyone recommended. You’d been missing for 5 days. Disappeared with no trace other than your cell phone and a bag of cold diner food spilt on the sidewalk. If it were up to him, he would’ve been at his desk the moment 30 minutes hit and you weren’t there.

Alvin called two hours later telling him what they found and Adam and Antonio had to physically restrain him, Will almost sedated him. Voight promised him that they’d find you, and Jay knew they’d do everything they could, but he needed to be a part of the search.

“Did she have any enemies?” Alvin asks and he doesn’t flinch when Jay begins to laugh sarcastically.

“Any enemies? Do you hear yourself? She had tons. We all do. But let’s stop pretending like her being taken the day we closed that case isn’t connected.”

Alvin tries to sympathize with him. “We have to ask. You know the drill.”

He throws his hands up in exasperation. “Are you seriously going to treat this like any other missing person? It’s Y/N, Al! Y/N!”

“We know.” Voight says from his office door. “I made a few calls, Jay, we know where she is.” For a fraction of a second, Jay is frozen, but the thought of what you could be going through right now moves him. He’s grabbed his jacket and is in the car before anyone else has moved.

“I thought only the CIA had access to things like that.” Adam whispers lowly in the car into Kevin’s ear.

He shrugs. “Do think it’s out of the question that he’d break several constitutional laws to save any one of us?”

Adam sits back in his seat with pursed lips, nodding.

You struggle against the restraints long after Madison leaves you with only a gag in your mouth. The multiple cars pulling up and all the people shouting told you that you were running out of time. As of this very moment, you were locked into your fate of watching the man you loved die.

This was not an option.

The hard plastic digs into your ankles and wrists, your movements quickening with each door you hear them break down. You try to scream, to warn whoever was on this floor that there was a danger they couldn’t possibly see, but your muffled cries wouldn’t carry.

Tears soak the bandana shoved in in your mouth and you try to scream again.

No! Stop! It isn’t safe!

You hear Voight’s voice a few doors down and begin to try and rock the chair back and forth. It was considered heavy for a good day, and today was not that. Having not eaten or really moved in so long had left you weak and foggy. The adrenaline coursing through you veins only aiding a little in your efforts.

The sound of the front door breaking down sends a jolt of energy through you and you send yourself flying in front of the gun just as the bedroom door opens.

Jay raises his weapon at the sound before his brain can register what has happened. His wide eyes find yours just before you’ve hit the ground.

“Y/N!” He screams and rushes towards you. Frantic, shaky hands move quickly to remove the bandana and zip ties before applying pressure to your shoulder. “I need a medic!” He calls franticly over his shoulder, but when he turns back to you, he has to shut down the thought that you might not make it that long.

“You found me.” You try to say, but instead sputter blood onto your cheek.

“Oh, God.” He gasps. “You’re okay, you’re going to be fine.” But the more he says, the less you hear him.

“I love you.” You try to reach out to his face and graze his cheek, but your fingers won’t cooperate and only leave smudges of blood across his skin.

When your breathing starts to quicken and become more raged, he knows time is running out. So, in defiance of the orders and suggestions coming in through his ear piece, he lifts you up to cradle you to him and runs.

An annoying, incessant beeping is the only thing you can hear, but when you move to reach for it, a shooting pain stops you cold. You groan softly and pry your eyes open only to see both Will and Antonio hovering too close to your face.

Will starts to wave a flashlight in your eyes and you push him away. “When was the last time you guys brushed your teeth?”

Antonio chuckles softly and places his hand atop your head, his thumb brushing softly. “We got her.” He says quietly. “She couldn’t help herself. She stayed close to the scene to see the fallout and Kim caught her.”

Will nods his head towards Jay who was sleeping soundly in what you had to imagine was a very uncomfortable position. “We’ve been keeping an eye on him as well as you. Do you want me to wake him?”

You look back over at him and smile before turning back. “Better not. These are the last few moments of peace I’ll get for the next year at least. You would think someone would be a little more grateful towards you for saving their life, but I can already hear how mad he’s going to be.” Only a small part of you is joking.

“Well, I’ll get shot next time and we’ll see how you feel.” Jay’s sleep riddled voice carries from the corner, but he hasn’t opened his eyes yet. “I’ll give you an hour.” He adds before settling back in.

Now that’s the love of my life.

Hawks X shy!reader

Hi there! So i posted the first part of my story and thank you to everyone who liked it! I may do a Dabi x reader one-shot a little later, but for now, birb man.

This is a one shot with a shy reader and a little bit of a jealous Hawks. Basically, Hawks has a huge crush on you and you also like him. But you're too shy, but one day you go to the bar with hawks and he confesses to you.

No pronouns mentioned!!

Btw don’t worry I plan to make y/n a total badass in a different one shot ;)

God, you were so cute.

Hawks was in his office, gazing at you as you talked to a coworker. He saw the way you timidly smiled, he saw the embarrassed look you gave him when you realized he was staring at you. He quickly looked away, not wanting to make you uncomfortable.

Shit, he was in deep. But how could he resist you, you were just so adorable! The way you would timidly smile at him, the way you would get flustered so easily, the way you would trip over visibly nothing. He just thought you were so cute.

He heard a quiet knock at his door, he peered over and saw you standing there, looking a bit embarrassed.

“I’m so sorry Hawks sir, but it looks like I messed up some paperwork. I completely understand if you're mad or want me to work over time. I'm so sor-” but Hawks cut you off with a hearty laugh.

“Oh yeah I was notified about that, dont worry its all taken care of,” he said in his calm and composed tone. But he didn't miss the look of shock and embarrassment you gave back at him, only to then drop your gaze to your feet.

“Hey seriously, don't worry about it ok? We all make mistakes but you came in here to correct them quickly, right?” He said and gave an empathetic smile. you gave a nod, still looking down at your feet.

He couldn't help but smile a little at how cute you were. Then he had an idea.

“How about this, a few of the other office workers and sidekicks are all gonna go out tonight for some drinks, you should come as you're supposed ‘over time’, ok,” he asked. Hawks was very good at hiding his emotions, if he wasn't you would probably catch on to how nervous he really was. He just didn't want you to turn him down.

Your head snapped up, looking obviously very flustered you said, “Me sir? Are you sure, I mean, I want to but-”

“Then you should come!” he said, maybe a little too excitedly, “come on, I’m being, like, 99% serious here!”

You giggled a little, “99? Not 100?”

“Well, you always have to be kidding by at least 1% of the time,” he said, putting on a reassuring smile, “come on I promise I'll make it fun ok? After all, my dream isn’t just to make hero’s have a little bit more free time, but for civilians as well!”

You nodded, a little bit more confident than before, “ok sir.”

Hawks couldn't help but smirk, “you can drop the formalities kiddo, just Hawks.”

You nodded, “Hawks, got it. Thank you so much Hawks!”

Hawks couldn't help but give you a loving smile as you left his office.

You smiled wide after leaving Hawkses office. My crush just asked me to come out for drinks!

Maybe you were looking too much into the situation, but still, you couldn't help it! Ever since you came to work at Hawkes agency, you couldn't help but really like him. He’s always so nice and goofy and so passionate about his job!

You let out a loving sigh, which one of your coworkers picked up on.

she looked at you and said, “Well, well, well, what do we have here? What did the boss want to talk about, hmm?”

You looked back up, smiling a little too brightly, “he invited me out for drinks with the rest of you guys, he's always so nice.”

She nodded, but gave you a knowing look, “yeah he is, but be honest,” she smiled a little deviously, “you like him don't you.”

The flustered look on your face was all she needed. But she was right, you definitely had a massive crush on Hawks. He was always so kind to you and never failed to make you laugh. And yet, you knew it was futile. You were a shy, clumsy nobody, and he could have anyone he wanted.

But nonetheless, you sighed and let yourself feel a twinge of giddiness at the prospect of going out for drinks with Hawks.

Going out was a mistake.

You liked your coworkers well enough, but right now? Not so much. They were all just so loud. You didn't really feel like drinking that night, just hanging out with the people you work with.

But by far the most memorable moment of the night was when some random guy came up to you to try and ask you out. He was obviously drunk, but still he should have seen how uncomfortable you were.

“Heyyyyy there cutie,” his words seem to slur together, you tried to back away from the guy but that just made him advance more towards you.

“What’s wrong sweetie? Come on lemme buy you something.” He said, cheeks rosy.

“N-no thank you sir, I’m good.” You say, obviously scared.

But he just wined, “come onnnnn have some fun.”

“No, really I don’t want to.”

He chuckled, taking a step closer to you. But he was cut off by a male figure.

Hawks smiled up at the guy, yet it wasn’t the same smile he would give to you. You noticed how he was in his normal clothes and not his hero outfit. You blushed a bit by how he protected you behind him.

“Alright pal, I think that’s enough. Find whoever you came with and go home, you’re way too drunk,” the guy huffed, but he seemed to know who he was talking to.

“Tch, whatever,” the guy said, clearly irritated. Nevertheless, he walked away from you and Hawks.

Hawks turned around to face you, “I’m so sorry about that, are you all right? He didn’t do anything, right? If he did I can always help you press charges-” this time you cut him off.

You giggled a little, “no really I’m ok. He just was really weird, that’s all.”

Hawk gave a comforting smile, “I’m glad. Hey,” he said looking around. “Do you wanna get out of here? I can take you back to your place.”

You looked down, a little flustered, “well I mean-”

Hawks just chuckled, “don’t worry, I’ll just walk you home. I promise, hero’s honor.”

You giggled, “sure why not. I trust you.”

While Hawks walked you home he was a perfect gentleman.

He asked you how you liked your job and he asked what you did before you worked at his agency.

You would also ask him questions, like what it was like being a hero, did he enjoy it, and who his favorite hero was.

“Hmmm,” he said, “it’s gotta be Endeavor. He's been my favorite since I was a kid!” He explained excitedly.

You giggled at how cute he was, and he smiled back at you.

You seemed to reach your house in no time. You didn’t really like how soon all of this had to end so quickly, it felt like you were on cloud 9. I mean, your crush was talking to you! And it was going so well.

As you approached your door, he stopped you, “hey I was wondering,” you looked at him, but he seemed to try to look anywhere but you. “Would you want to, I don’t know, go out for drinks… with just me?”

Your brain stopped working, your crush just asked you out for drinks.

He put his hand up after seeing your expression of shock, “or we could do something else! Or if your not interested that's totally fine, don’t worry about-”

But you cut him off, “no no no! Ummm…” you looked down at your feet. “M-maybe we could go out for lunch tomorrow?”

THE US OWES HAWAIIANS MILLIONS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF LAND - THE US CONGRESS MADE SURE THE DEBT WASNʻT PAID

By Rob Perez, Honolulu Star-Advertiser/ProPublica ProPublica is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative newsroom. In the 1990s, Hawaii’s two elder statesmen — U.S. Sens. Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka — were at the forefront of efforts to ensure that the U.S. compensated Native Hawaiians for ancestral lands taken from them over the years. “Dan Inouye believed that a promise made should be a promise kept,” Akaka, a Native Hawaiian, said in 2012 upon the death of his longtime Senate colleague. But an investigation by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and ProPublica has found that those same senators voted several times each to support must-pass legislation that included provisions undermining efforts to repay millions of dollars in land debt to Hawaiians. At least six other current and former members of Hawaii’s congressional delegation have supported such legislation one or more times. Between them, Hawaii’s members of Congress voted for at least six laws authorizing the federal government to sell dozens of excess properties to private parties rather than offering them to a Hawaiian trust established to repatriate the land. In one must-pass military spending bill spanning more than 500 pages, lawmakers slipped in a single sentence that helped a handful of nonprofits to acquire the land. In another, they added language that effectively put the need for military housing ahead of the need for housing Hawaiians. The circumvention of the landmark 1995 Hawaiian Home Lands Recovery Act, which has not been previously reported, sent the excess lands to a variety of buyers instead: the Catholic Church; the nonprofit operator of a private school; a developer that intends to sell a site to another company with plans to construct hundreds of private-sector homes there. The transactions mostly involved lands on Oahu, the state’s most populous island, and were executed during a period in which the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, which manages the trust, faced a severe shortage of developable residential land there. About 11,000 Hawaiians are now seeking residential homesteads on Oahu, nearly double what the figure was when the recovery act passed. As the Star-Advertiser and ProPublica reported in December, the trust has only enough land to accommodate less than a third of those homestead-seekers in single-family homes, although it is moving to develop more multi-family housing. Many waitlisters are homeless, and thousands have died without getting a homestead lease. Even as the federal government was selling excess properties to private buyers, it offered only two parcels to the trust over the past decade, according to the news organizations’ investigation. And one was for a remote mountainside location that DHHL rejected because it determined that the property — a former solar observatory — wasn’t suitable for residential use or to lease for other purposes. The findings confirmed the suspicions of Mike Kahikina, who said he had a hunch something was amiss during the eight years he served on the Hawaiian Homes Commission, which decides policy for DHHL. Kahikina joined the commission in 2011, 16 years after the recovery act was signed. Along with eight other commissioners, his job was to help the department get beneficiaries onto residential, ranching and farming homesteads in a timely way — a task DHHL has struggled with historically. By the time he left in 2019, the federal government’s debt was the same size as when he joined. Kahikina said he periodically raised questions with DHHL about the land debt, but they were never satisfactorily answered. The news organizations shared their findings with Kahikina — an Air Force veteran, former state legislator, ordained minister and outreach worker for troubled youth — as he sat outside the West Oahu homestead residence that has been in his family for three generations. With his long salt-and-pepper hair tied back in a bun, Kahikina, who now heads the Association of Hawaiians for Homestead Lands, a statewide nonprofit organization of waitlisters, was stunned as he learned details of the private deals. “You connected the dots for me,” he said, repeating himself to emphasize the point. “It’s like we’re an invisible people.” The investigation relied on federal, state and county records and revealed nearly 40 deals over the past decade involving about 520 acres, all authorized by special language inserted into at least six bills passed by Congress. Beyond the Catholic Church, the developer and the private school operator, the special legislation also allowed land deals with a veterans association, individual homebuyers, another nonprofit private school operator and several religious organizations. Had it not been for that legislation, advocates say the recovery act could have allowed some of these same entities to access the land while benefiting DHHL at the same time. That’s because under the recovery act, DHHL is permitted to sell certain properties for fair market value and use the proceeds for homestead development. The Navy, which had owned the majority of lands involved in the private deals, defended its actions. The special legislation expressed the intent of Congress at the time, and if a new law conflicted with a prior one, the new one applied, according to a spokesperson. “Navy followed the law,” she wrote. The General Services Administration, which plays a key role in federal land disposal, would not address criticisms about bypassing the recovery act. But in response to a letter from one of Hawaii’s two current U.S. senators, a GSA official acknowledged that congressional actions — a reference to the special legislation — allowed some agencies to bypass the recovery act. William J. Aila Jr., who now heads DHHL and the Hawaiian Homes Commission, said the congressionally approved workarounds deprived the trust of promising development opportunities. “It’s a conscious effort to go around the spirit of the recovery act,” Aila said in an interview. “Somebody had to consciously propose legislation.” Aila also said that some of the Oahu parcels that were sold would have been especially appealing to the commission because they were relatively flat and already had roads and utility connections. The high costs of installing such systems have contributed to DHHL’s slow pace in developing homesteads in recent years. “It wasn’t the department that was deprived,” Aila said. “It was the beneficiaries and the people on the waitlist.” Inouye and Akaka were widely known as strong advocates for Native Hawaiians and were credited with helping secure passage of major legislation benefiting Hawaii’s indigenous people, including the recovery act and bills related to health care and education. But extensive reporting on the special legislation did not turn up evidence that Inouye, Akaka or other legislators publicly addressed the potential impact on the debt. For their part, Hawaii’s current U.S. senators vowed to stop the practice of workarounds — even though both voted years earlier for legislation allowing it. They said they hadn’t realized at the time that the trust effectively would be left out the loop. Beneficiaries also said they didn’t know Congress was shortchanging the trust all these years. Many greeted the news with shock. “My heart’s broken,” said Ian Lee Loy, who lives on a Big Island homestead and served on the commission from 2011 to 2013. “The promises to Native Hawaiians continue to go unfilled while the political machine keeps churning and deals are made.” More Land Still Owed The circumvention of the recovery act is only the latest chapter in the struggle by Native Hawaiians to reclaim their lands. The U.S. debt to Hawaiians began accruing in the 1890s, after the U.S.-supported overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy. In 1898, when the U.S. annexed the island chain, it took possession of 1.8 million uncompensated acres of former kingdom land. In 1921, as a form of reparation, Congress adopted the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, creating a trust of 203,000 acres from among those taken. In promoting the act, Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole, considered the father of the program, referred to the destitute conditions that many families lived in, particularly those in urban tenements. “That is why the race is fast dying out,” he said in advocating for the bill. “These conditions stare the Hawaiian people in the face.” The new law authorized the government to issue 99-year land leases to people who are at least 50% Hawaiian for $1 annually. In the decades that followed, the state and federal governments took control of thousands of those acres for public purposes — roads, airports, schools, military uses — again paying little or no compensation. The recovery act was specifically meant to compensate for over 1,400 acres the U.S. was using without authorization. Under the act, the trust must be notified whenever most federal land in Hawaii is designated “excess,” or unneeded, by a federal agency. That designation triggers a screening process in which other federal agencies are given an opportunity to claim the land. It also triggers a requirement that the Department of Defense or GSA notify the chair of the Hawaiian Homes Commission of a potential acquisition candidate. If no other federal agency claims the land, the trust has the option to acquire the parcel. If that option is exercised, the land value is deducted from the outstanding debt. The new law kicked off rounds of negotiations about how to settle that debt. Because not all acres are created equal, the two sides focused on land values and eventually signed a landmark agreement to settle all claims: The federal government would transfer to the trust nine properties totaling 960 acres, roughly comparable in value to the 1,400 acres in question. The land was almost all on Oahu and described in news coverage as prime land. At a 1998 signing ceremony at the Hawaii governor’s residence, the Royal Hawaiian Band entertained a crowd of VIP guests. The newly inked settlement was hailed as a turning point for the trust. But things haven’t turned out that way. The trust has not received about 70 acres, including 47 that were removed from the settlement. Two other parcels have yet to be transferred because of a variety of environmental or other complications. DHHL staff last year told the commission that the land debt was worth between $24 million and nearly $34 million in 1998 values, which is how the department tracks the debt. That equates to roughly $39 million to $55 million in today’s dollars. What’s more, some trust beneficiaries — those who are at least half Hawaiian — believe the homesteading program is due more compensation because of the relatively poor quality of the nearly 900 acres it has received thus far. None of that land has been used for residential homesteads, according to DHHL, mostly due to the location or condition of the property or the prohibitive cost of installing infrastructure. The land is largely being used for industrial purposes. The federal government did offer, last year, an 80-acre site in Ewa Beach, a former tsunami warning center surrounded by residential neighborhoods and a golf course, along the West Oahu coastline. Hundreds of homes could be developed there, and DHHL said it accepts the offer. If, as expected, the acquisition goes through, the federal government still would owe DHHL more than $11 million worth of land in today’s dollars. When the Department of the Interior, which oversees the trust for the federal government but doesn’t decide which lands are offered to DHHL, was asked why a balance still remained after 25 years, a spokesman in a December statement gave three reasons. The first was that few excess lands have become available since 2000. The second was that the trust declined several offerings because of contamination or other concerns. And the third? The impact of the congressional workarounds. Making the Workarounds Explicit Inouye, a decorated Army veteran who lost his right arm during World War II and went on to become a political legend in Hawaii, was a key figure in winning passage of the recovery act. But the new reporting shows that he also played a critical role in the creation of the workarounds. One key example came in the 2000s, when nonprofit organizations near Pearl Harbor unsuccessfully tried to purchase the lands they had long been leasing from the Navy. They turned to Inouye for help. By the late 2000s, Inouye was one of the most powerful members of Congress, eventually becoming chair of the influential Appropriations Committee and the Senate’s president pro tempore, third in line for succession to the U.S. presidency. The nonprofits had built churches, schools and other facilities on the land, and they told his staff they wanted to remain. In interviews, the nonprofits said that after they contacted his office, Inouye in 2009 got language added to the annual military spending bill that enabled the organizations to purchase their leased lands from the Navy for fair market value. Two years later, Inouye added language — a single sentence — to a 566-page spending bill, adding a “clarification of land conveyance” to the 2009 law, specifically exempting those land sales from the recovery act, according to his former chief of staff, Jennifer Sabas. Sabas said in an email that her memory of how the exemption provision came together was fuzzy, but she recalled several lessees had contacted the senator’s office seeking assistance in acquiring the land. Because they had invested so much in those locations over the decades, “he wanted to provide them the opportunity to stay,” Sabas wrote. At the time, Sabas added, Inouye believed other nearby Navy parcels would become available and DHHL could pursue those if interested. But no such offers were made to the trust, according to GSA and Navy records. The Navy told the Star-Advertiser and ProPublica that all the lands covered by that special legislation were acquired by the nonprofits. Through the 2009 and 2011 legislation, six churches, a veterans group and a private school operator purchased more than 20 acres from the Navy between 2013 and 2019, generating roughly $9 million for the federal government, according to public records. That money did not go to the trust. Several of the nonprofits said they were unaware that the land sales had been exempted from the recovery act until they were contacted recently by the Star-Advertiser and ProPublica. Bishop Robert Fitzpatrick of the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii, which acquired its nearly 3-acre site in 2016 thanks to the special legislation, said that had the diocese known that the trust and its beneficiaries were left out of the process, the church would have reconsidered the purchase. He noted that the church was founded in Hawaii in the 1860s with the aid of the monarchy. “Respecting Hawaiian sovereignty is a core value for us,” he said. Hawaii’s former U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie, who voted for the 2009 bill authorizing the land sales, didn’t recall the trust issue being raised at all. “It certainly never occurred to me,” said Abercrombie, who vacated his congressional seat in 2010 to begin a four-year term as governor. “I thought we were doing a good deed.” In addition to the Inouye efforts, one other bill explicitly included a recovery-act exemption. The military spending measure in 2013 authorized the sale of an 11-acre parcel at Navy Hale Keiki School to its nonprofit operator. The exemption language — inserted into the 494-page National Defense Authorization Act — was a copy of what Inouye had put in the 2011 bill, allowing the Navy to convey title to the land before it is “made available for transfer pursuant to the Hawaiian Home Lands Recovery Act.” Robin Danner, chair of the Sovereign Council of Hawaiian Homestead Associations, the largest statewide organization representing those eligible for the homesteading program, blamed Hawaii’s congressional delegation and DHHL for the lost opportunities. She pointed out that DHHL basically has two main federal laws to monitor and said its failure to flag the circumventions was glaring. “This would not have happened if DHHL had been doing its job,” she said. Kahikina, the former commissioner, agreed, saying no one from the agency was aggressively monitoring the situation, enabling the private deals to continue under the radar. Aila, however, pushed back on this point. He said DHHL doesn’t have the staff to monitor all federal legislation, but that it periodically asked GSA about the availability of property. He also pointed out that the recovery act requires the federal government to notify the trust as excess lands become available. A More Indirect Route In addition to the two explicit exemptions, several other pieces of special legislation did not mention the recovery act but had the same end result: The federal government transferred excess lands without offering them to the trust. Many of those acres were in Kalaeloa, part of the region where DHHL has been concentrating development on Oahu in recent years. Close to a dozen other parcels on Maui and the Big Island were in residential neighborhoods. Critics pointed out that the residential quality of the land represented lost opportunities for the trust’s future housing plans. Two of the laws benefitted Hunt Cos., a Texas-based developer that has done Hawaii projects for more than a quarter of a century. Legislation that Congress passed in 1999 and 2006 authorized the Navy to sell or lease land on Oahu to pay for redevelopment of Ford Island, a historic Navy base in Pearl Harbor. Hunt issued a brief statement acknowledging the acquisition of Navy properties but declined to respond to criticisms over the deals. Alan Murakami, who recently retired as an attorney for the Native Hawaiian Legal Corp., a nonprofit advocacy group, drew on history to criticize the property deals. Given that the Navy never properly owned the Kalaeloa lands, it “had no moral right to treat [them] as a piggy bank,” he said. Abercrombie, who as a Hawaii congressman and member of the House Armed Services Committee was a key advocate for the 1999 Ford Island legislation, also questioned the Navy’s actions, saying the law was designed to keep all the land in use for military housing. Once the property was placed for sale without maintaining that use, it should have been offered to the trust, Abercrombie added. “It’s crystal clear the Navy had that obligation,” he said. Asked to respond to the criticisms, the Navy spokesperson said the Ford Island law “speaks for itself.” Quoting from the statute, she noted that it was enacted “for the purpose of developing or facilitating the development of Ford Island.” “A Slap in the Face” Just as the workaround deals were picking up momentum, Bode Kalua, 28, a landscaper who is at least half Hawaiian, applied through DHHL for a residential homestead on Oahu. He wanted a place to call home for the family he planned to eventually start. In 2012, DHHL added him to the waitlist, more than 10,000 spaces from the top. Since then, he’s moved up roughly 700 spots, a pace that will keep him waiting for years. Kalua, now the father of three young kids with a fourth on the way, said the circumventions prolonged the waits for applicants ahead of him. He is renting a home on Oahu’s windward side but, like many other lower-income applicants on the waitlist, he and his family have spent time homeless. And the private deals were made during a period in which DHHL’s residential awards fell to record lows, hitting single digits in recent years, as the Star-Advertiser and ProPublica reported last year. “It’s even worse than just a broken promise,” Kalua said of the workarounds. “It’s like a slap in the face.” Sharon Pua Freitas, 55, who applied for an Oahu residential homestead a year after Kalua, shares his disdain. “It bothers me to my core because that was the land that the United States of America illegally took to begin with,” said Freitas, who is more than 9,000 slots deep on the waitlist and has yet to receive a homestead offer. “Now it’s still in somebody else’s hands.” Senators Vow Change Both of Hawaii’s current U.S. senators have voted for legislation to circumvent the recovery act, but they now say they will take steps to ensure the trust isn’t bypassed going forward. “I won’t defend the circumvention of the recovery act,” Sen. Brian Schatz, chair of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, which deals with Native Hawaiian issues, said in an early March interview. “It’s something that I was just made aware of, and I don’t think it should happen going forward.” Schatz voted for the 2013 military spending bill that included one of the two explicit recovery act exemptions and allows a sale to the operator of Hale Keiki school near Pearl Harbor. “I will scour every must-pass bill for anything like this to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” he said. Sen. Mazie Hirono, who voted for the 2011 legislation with the exemption sentence, said she too was unaware of the implications of the measures for DHHL. “It’s clear there’s a gap here that shouldn’t have existed,” she said in an interview. Prompted by the news organizations’ inquiry, she recently wrote to the heads of the DOD and GSA, the federal agencies required to notify the trust of excess lands, expressing alarm that the state agency wasn’t being properly notified. A senior Pentagon official wrote back to Hirono, saying his office would review the military’s processes for disposing of property in Hawaii “to ensure each is fully consistent” with the recovery act and the 1998 settlement agreement. He also named a liaison within the department to deal directly with DHHL. GSA, which did not comment about the news organizations’ findings, told Hirono that the agency would work with the trust to resolve outstanding recovery-act claims — an apparent continuation of the status quo. “As noted in your letter, GSA is aware of specific congressional actions that have also allowed some landholding agencies to bypass the HHLRA to achieve other goals,” Gianelle Rivera, an associate administrator, wrote in her April 19 letter to the senator. Beneficiaries, lawmakers and others say the best way to prevent the circumvention problem is twofold: Don’t pass legislation allowing that to happen and make sure the federal government notifies DHHL when any excess lands become available.

He doesn’t know how to explain it, how his heart threatened to burst whenever he catches sight of her. The way she smiled, her eyes shining with happiness as she went about her business, the way she laughed, reminding him of silver bells ringing in the wind, the way she spoke, a lyrical melody regardless of what she says. Everything about her enchanted him and she doesn’t know when it started, when he started to notice her, when he began to fall for her.

When he walk past, whether it be conscious or unconscious, he would take a glance at her, curiosity at what she may be doing, be it chatting with the maids or laughing with his men, but the moment she turns to look at him he hurries away, his face strangely red. He has no explanation, nothing to reason.

The worst part of all is her reactions to everything he says. From his scathing remarks to his barbed insults, she takes no offence to any of them, instead she smiles and takes it all, returning his words with kindly ones of her own. She calls him strong when he believes himself weak, she sheds tears despite his own personal story, she does not pity him nor show sympathy at his plight – something he is eternally thankful for – rather she showed her anger, silently challenging him. She needn’t words to explain herself, he understands it plainly, the way she enunciated each and every word after. He would never forget that day.

She’s an enigma, is all he can say.

But she isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. There has been a fair few times he has seen her in pain, sadness marring her beautiful features, a forlorn expression on her face. And every single time he would want to reach out, fingers outstretched yet he restraint himself, forcing himself to look away. For some reason he feels like he has no right to see her like that, feeling as if he has seen something personal.

He feels pain in his chest whenever he sees her like that, an urge to pull her close and comfort her slowly taking over him.

He doesn’t understand it, he really doesn’t.

But someday he hopes for the chance.

His footsteps thud against the floorboards, face sour as he made his way down the hallways. It wasn’t that he disliked parties, he just disliked certain parts of it, for example the messes Mitsunari makes when he attempts to pour sake, or the rowdiness of certain individuals. But what made this particular event even more annoying was the fact that Masamune had arrived early in the morning, interrupted his work and absconded with Mai without even bothering to notify him of anything.

That what infuriated him the most.

If he was lucky, maybe he would see her there, the chances were unpredictable, to say the least.

He was soon proven wrong however, the moment he stepped foot into the hall. He expected something else other than this, anything other than this. A completely sombre mood in the fell over the room the moment he entered, eyes watching him, making him feel a tad bit suspicious, and overall uncomfortable.

“What’s going on –”

Before he could finish his sentence, he was interrupted, caught off guard by Nobunaga, who for some reason began to berate him for something he had no idea of, every so often the others would pipe in and yet throughout it all, none of them would explain to him the situation.

It was until then did Nobunaga finally ended, stating that he is not to leave the room until he ‘made up’ with Mai did everything click into place. Masamune stealing Mai, a sudden supposed party with no explanation or any prior warning, and this sudden intervention of sorts? Were they misunderstanding something or –

He stood dumbfounded as he watched the others file out the room, the door sliding shut with a resounding shut behind Hideyoshi, leaving him seeming alone before another door opened, this time revealing the person he had been worriedly looking for the entire time, the person who made him flustered for no rhyme or reason,

Mai.

“Hi Ieyasu,” a momentary pause as she looked away, face flushed as she continued albeit sheepishly. “They went a little too far, didn’t they.”

He didn’t know how to respond, much less look her directly in the eye. The situation was much too awkward, much too strange for any normal conversation to take place. With that hanging down upon them, he sighed.

“Want to have some tea?”

“Oh, sure, sounds fine.”

Now neither of them could look directly at the other, the feeling was uncomfortable, that is until he finally got sick and tired of it.

“You look nice…?”

“Huh? Ah, thanks, Masamune got it for me. He said something about making a guy fall in love or something to that extent.”

“… What.”

That kind of nonsense… is really something Masamune could come up with. Taking a deep breath, he stated truthfully.

“Beautiful clothes don’t make a man fall like that, you don’t need them to attract someone else.”

And underneath his breath he added.

“I fell for you, not them, after all.”

The first and only thing Jake Peralta thought in the moment the gunshot rang out was I’ll never get to see Amy again.

And then he was down. There wasn’t any pain, unlike when he was shot in the foot, but there was some feeling of simultaneous numbness and heat blooming through him like ink in water. It felt like he could get back up, like he could push through it and defend himself the way he was trained, but he couldn’t muster the strength to stand.

A finishing shot should come soon, he thought, now that he couldn’t fight back. He shuddered to think about what an easy target he was in that moment.

But the shot never came, at least not that he could tell. He could have sworn he heard one, or even two, but it was all background noise to the uncomfortable sound of his pulse in his ears and the swaths of black clouding his vision.

It didn’t matter. One bullet or three didn’t make a difference; all Jake knew was that it was getting harder to breathe, and his heart was skipping, and he wished Amy could have been there to hold him one last time.

“Briefing room. Now.”

Amy immediately stood from her desk at Captain Holt’s words and rolled her shoulders and neck to relieve the tension that had been building there all morning. It was harder doing deskwork without Jake around to liven it up, and she often found herself stuck tight in one position for hours on end. She was grateful for any real opportunity to get out of her chair and stretch.

Of course, it was only to settle down at one of the briefing room desks, but motion was motion. She let her mind wander as the rest of the squad filed into the room, wondering whether someone was in trouble for doing something stupid, which seemed to be half the reason meetings were ever called, or whether there was an interesting new case to solve.

Holt closed the door and made his way to the front of the room. He cradled a leaf of letterhead paper on a manila envelope in his hands, and Amy hoped it actually was the beginning of a new case file.

“I have word from Marshal Johnson,” Holt began, and the room erupted with sound.

“Jake’s captured O’Bannon, hasn’t he!” Charles said, his face alight with joy. “I knew our boy could do it,” he added to Amy. “In and out, just like that. Nobody in the 99 has ever caught such a fugitive in less than a month before!”

Amy felt her insides constrict with nerves, just like they always do when there’s news from an undercover investigation. Jake had been on so many she felt she should be used to it by now—he’s a perfectly capable detective and he’s always been fine before—but her gut didn’t agree.

This particular case he was working alone. Michael O’Bannon was wanted for just about every crime under the sun, from drug dealing to murder. Jake was chosen for the job for reasons that couldn’t be disclosed no matter how much Charles had begged and pleaded, and while Amy hadn’t voiced her desire to know more about the case her fiancé would be working, the thought of him being undercover for so long without anyone else on the squad terrified her.

But here, through all the chatter, was news. Holt had actually tolerated the noise longer than Amy expected, but it didn’t take long for him to quiet them down. He cleared his throat and looked down to skim the paper in front of him before laying it down on the lectern.

“I have been searching for the words to tell you all about this since the letter arrived this morning,” Holt said, and Amy’s heart all but fell through the bottom of the floor. The briefing room was quieter than she had ever heard it. There was a long pause, as if Holt were still searching for those words, and it was suddenly glaringly obvious that something was terribly wrong.

“Detective Peralta was compromised in his mission,” he said eventually, his eyes trained on a back corner of the room to avoid eye contact. “He was killed three days ago in the line of duty.”

The room burst to life again, this time filled with pain and rage and indignation and denial. Amy could only sit still as her world shattered around her and Holt brought the clamoring back down.

“Jake was a fine detective, and a fine man,” Holt said, his voice wavering. “He will be sorely missed. I will let you all know when the service will be as soon as possible, and I urge you to support each other in this tragedy.”

Holt left the room before anyone could ask any questions, and the silence and stillness persisted long after the door swung shut. Amy’s face was wet with tears, and she could hear Charles sniffling beside her. She couldn’t tear herself away from the shock until Rosa appeared on her other side and pulled her into a hug. Her crying finally became audible as she sobbed into Rosa’s shoulder, gripping the back of her jacket like her life depended on it.

When Jake came to in his hospital bed, he could barely see through the pain enough to know he was even in a hospital bed. His whole torso was on fire and he had a splitting headache the likes of which he’d only experienced before in terrible hangovers.

It took another few minutes before he realized he wasn’t in an actual hospital. The floral wallpaper was old and cracked, and a pile of dusty toys and a plush chair sat in the opposite corner. The blinds were drawn tight in the window and there were two doors, one that must lead out of the room and another that could be a bathroom or closet door. It looked like a regular old bedroom.

Jake wasn’t sure whether he should call for somebody. He was hooked up to an IV and an ECG machine, and he was alive, so odds were good that whoever had done this was on his side. He couldn’t be sure, though, and while he didn’t have any means of defense in such a state, he didn’t want to plunge into deeper shit than he was already in.

Before he could fight through his pain- and probably drug-induced haze, the door opened and an older woman walked in. Jake had never seen her before, and she started when she saw Jake awake.

“Oh! Detective Peralta,” the woman said, “I’m glad you’re awake.”

“Where am I?” Jake asked. He wished he could think well enough to ask more specific questions.

“This is my house,” the woman said. “I’m Doctor Acosta. Marshal Johnson sent you into hiding with me as soon as I was able to get you out of the operating room. You’re not allowed to leave here no matter what,” she said. “Marshal’s orders.”

Jake groaned. “Can I speak to him?” he said. “I need to be briefed on…” he gestured vaguely around the room, “all of this.”

“Of course,” Acosta said. “I was instructed to call him as soon you were lucid.” She took a phone and a slip of paper from her pocket and dialed the number on the paper before handing the phone to Jake.

“US Marshal Johnson,” the marshal said when he picked up the phone.

“Sir,” Jake said, “It’s Peralta. What happened? How am I alive?”

“Slow down,” Johnson said. “I’ll explain everything. We found out at the last minute that your cover had been blown. I led a team to your location and we didn’t make it before you were shot, but we managed to chase O’Bannon and his men off before they finished the job.” He paused. “Most of them escaped, including O’Bannon. Doctor Acosta is keeping you hidden until you’re well enough to be on duty.”

Jake sighed. Normally he’d argue, and he probably will once he feels well enough to at least stand and walk, but for now it hurt just to breathe and he couldn’t imagine facing off against a genius criminal again anytime soon.

“Fine,” he said. “Can I at least have contact with my precinct if I’m not working the case anymore?”

There was a silence at the other end of the line, which Jake hoped meant Johnson was considering it. Superiors never seem to sway in his favor, though, and he could tell the answer wouldn’t be a positive one when Johnson finally heaved a sigh and replied.

“Unfortunately, you cannot,” Johnson said. “Even this phone call is the only one we’ll have between each other. This is a unique case, Detective, and certain measures need to be taken for your safety.”

“Okay, well…how long before I can go back on duty?” Jake asked. Johnson’s voice had betrayed some emotion Jake couldn’t quite put his finger on, but it wasn’t good. Something was off, but he hoped if he ignored it he wouldn’t have to deal with it.

“Doctor Acosta will tell you everything you need to know medically,” Johnson said. “There’s just one other thing you should be aware of.”

Jake frowned. “What is it?”

“Those measures for your safety go beyond contact,” Johnson said. “O’Bannon has eyes everywhere, and he needed to think you were dead or he would find a way to kill you. You understand why that poses a concern.”

“Okay…” Of course he understood; it was common sense. Not only did he not want to be killed, but being laid up in a hospital bed, even in a place less full of civilians than a hospital, put innocent lives in danger.

“I had to notify your captain of your death,” Johnson said. “He will inform your precinct and organize a funeral so as not to rouse suspicion. News of your death will be broadcast publicly.”

Jake paused. “You mean you notified him of my fake death,” he said.

“I notified him that you fell at the hands of O’Bannon,” Johnson said. “You are officially dead until further notice. You will not show your face, you will not use social media, and you will have no contact with anyone outside Acosta’s apartment.”

“What?” Jake cried. “No, no, no, you can’t do that,” he said. “My squad knows how to fake mourning; they’ve done it before for former Detective Pimento. You can’t tell them I’m actually dead.”

“I can do whatever I deem necessary,” Johnson said, “and I have. I understand your misgivings, Peralta, but as soon as you’re well, or as soon as O’Bannon is captured, you can go home. This situation isn’t indefinite.”

“But sir—”

“But nothing,” Johnson said. “You will be informed when you can reemerge. Until then, Doctor Acosta will take care of you.”

The phone hung up before he could protest and he reluctantly handed it back to Acosta. There was nothing he could do; his friends, his family, will think he’s dead for who knows how long. Months, maybe. As much as he’d always thought faking his death would be the coolest thing he could accomplish as a cop, imagining the rest of the squad mourning him and thinking he would never come back broke his heart.

It seemed cruel. What about Amy? She was so uncertain for so long about dating another cop, and this could solidify those uncertainties into regrets. He wanted more than anything in the world to tell her he was okay, that he loved her, and that he would be back as soon as he could. He briefly wondered if he could bribe the doctor into letting him write a letter, but tried to push the temptation out of his mind. As much as he hated to admit it, O’Bannon was too dangerous for him to try anything, and if something happened to Amy or anyone else at the Nine-Nine because of him he’d never be able to forgive himself.

So the waiting game began.

Captain Holt tried to insist Amy take time off of work, but she couldn’t do it. She couldn’t sit at home and cry despite feeling like she had enough tears to last months. Being at work was the best distraction she had, and if she gave that up, she would totally break. It seemed the same was true of most of the squad, save Charles, who hadn’t shown his face in the week since they were notified of Jake’s death.

The funeral was tonight, and Amy wasn’t prepared. She’d been grappling with her eulogy for days, knowing words didn’t exist to describe how she felt about Jake and his passing. In the end, she’d crumbled up the sixth paper she’d attempted and curled into a ball herself, wishing she could disappear.

So, instead of doing work, she only sat at her desk and stared at her computer, her mind running through how the service might go. She wasn’t sure she’d even be able to make it into the room with the coffin on stage and Jake’s portrait standing next to it. She almost considered staying home, but she couldn’t just not show up no matter how sick she felt at the prospect.

“Amy.”

Amy snapped out of her daze; she hadn’t noticed Gina walking up to her. She sighed and rubbed her temples to try to ease her headache as Gina slid her papers away to sit on the desk.

“Hey, Gina,” she said. “What is it?”

“You’re stressing about tonight, aren’t you?” Gina said, and continued before Amy had a chance to reply. “Of course you are. What say you and me ditch this depression rodeo and go pregame?”

Amy scowled. “Pregame what?” she said. “Jake’s funeral?”

“It’s what he would have wanted and you know it,” Gina said. She sighed, then added, “I’m stressing too, okay? I just think the night will be a little easier if, you know, I had some tequila and five-drink-Amy made an appearance.”

“I suppose a little confidence wouldn’t hurt…”

“That’s the spirit!” Gina slapped Amy’s back hard enough that she nearly face planted into the desk. “Oops,” she said with a chuckle. “I may have already had a drink or two.”

“Okay,” Amy said, standing up. “All right. I just need to tell Captain Holt we’re clocking out.”

And two hours later, Amy was sobbing face-first into the bar. It was the first time the number of drinks she’d had didn’t correspond to any of her drunken quirks. The crying had started after drink number two, and she couldn’t stop herself from letting out intermittent bursts of tears.

“I miss him,” she cried. “I miss him so much and I loved him so much and…and what if he didn’t know that?” She lifted her head and looked wide-eyed at Gina. “What if I didn’t say it enough?”

Gina groaned. “Your relationship was so pure it made me want to vomit,” she said. “He knew you loved him. Trust me. You were all he ever talked about.”

Amy nodded and wiped her cheeks with her sleeve. “I don’t know what I’m going to do without him,” she murmured.

“Yeah,” Gina said. “You only get one best friend. Of course, I am many people’s best friend, but I only have enough room in my life for one…and…”

Amy tilted her head. “Gina?”

“And he’s gone,” Gina said flatly. She slid out of the bar stool and pasted a smile onto her face before holding her hand out to Amy. “We should get ready for the service. Contrary to popular belief, I can’t just flip my hair and become a perfect twelve.”

Amy took Gina’s hand and slipped off the stool, stumbling into her. “I think I had too many drinks,” she said. “Oh, God, I’m going to ruin the funeral.”

“Don’t think about it and it’ll be over before you know it,” Gina drawled as she practically pushed Amy out of the bar.

When they got to the church, Amy took a seat on one of the front pews while Gina went to the bathroom, and it wasn’t long before she was flanked by Rosa and Terry.

“How you holding up, Santiago?” Terry said. “I know today must be hard for you, but I’m here if you need anything.”

Amy sighed and rested her head on his shoulder. “Thank you, Terry.” She paused, then admitted, “I don’t have a speech.”

“You don’t?” Terry frowned. “That’s so unlike you.”

Amy nodded. “If I go up there and say anything you’re gonna have to escort me out because I won’t be able to make it off the stage myself because I couldn’t even do this for him; I couldn’t write him a nice eulogy, and I couldn’t hold myself together at his funeral, and he’d be teasing me for being a mess right now, and…”

“Are you drunk?”

Amy nodded again. “Gina’s idea.” She sighed. “It didn’t work.”

“Look,” Rosa said, “if you can’t make it up there to give a dumb speech, it’s okay. Nobody is going to force you and everyone already knows how much you loved him.”

“I’m sorry,” Amy said. “Jake was your friend, too. I don’t want you to have to take care of me. This is hard on all of us.”

“Yeah,” Terry said, “it is. We all just have to be there for each other and we’ll be okay.”

Amy nodded and straightened up as much as she could as the service began. It felt longer than it actually was, and her eyes never dried through the entire evening, but she made it to the end without vomiting so she deemed it a success. That is, until it was time for eulogies.

She stiffly made her way to the microphone and stood staring blankly at the mourners, wringing one hand with the other as she tried to figure out what to say. Giving up on writing it in advance was a mistake, she thought.

“Jake…” Amy took a deep breath. “Jake Peralta was the best person I have ever known,” she said. “I was lucky to have him in so much of my life. He inspired me through my fears and anxieties, and he helped teach me how to relax and enjoy life for what it is.” She stopped to wipe her tears away again. “I wish more than anything he could come back,” she said. Her chest tightened and she was crying to the point that wiping them away did nothing, but she kept speaking.

“Jake was so full of love,” she said. “He loved so much and so hard and he deserved to be here longer than he was. I’ll carry him with me in everything I do at the Nine-Nine, and I know the rest of his friends will, too.”

It was four months before Jake heard back from Marshal Johnson. They were the longest months of his life, even longer than the time he’d spent in Florida. At least then he’d had Captain Holt around, and he could go outside, and he could get a letter from the squad every so often.

So when the doorbell rang and Doctor Acosta brought Johnson into the house, Jake felt like he’d ascended into someplace higher than Heaven. The briefing was quick and simple: the FBI had detained O’Bannon and subdued all of his men, and Captain Holt would be told the truth about Jake before he went back to Brooklyn. His life should be back to normal in just days, but the prospect of seeing his friends months after they were told he was dead was more nerve-wracking than any case he’d been on. What if they were angry? He knew he would be angry if his role had been reversed with any of them—not that he would blame them, but he would be angry nonetheless.

Jake’s plane came first thing in the morning, and he was back in New York by noon to meet Holt at the airport. His stomach churned as he left the gate and scanned the crowd for Holt, who he found with no problem. He grinned despite his nerves as he approached the captain.

“Sir,” Jake said, offering his hand.

“Peralta.” Holt nodded and shook Jake’s hand before pausing and drawing him into a hug. “It’s good to see you again, Jake,” he said. “I am glad you’re well.”

“It’s good to see you, too, Captain,” Jake said. “Really good.”

“I’ve not told the others about you yet,” Holt said once they’d caught a cab. “I only got word late last night, and I figured you would want to stop by the precinct to see them as soon as you got back, anyway.”

“Yeah,” Jake said, “I need to see them. But, uh…shouldn’t they have some warning? I mean, I think ghosts are badass, but they might not think so.”

“I will go in before you and tell them,” Holt said. “They will all be thrilled to see you, Peralta. You should know your funeral was the most emotional thing I have ever experienced.”

There it was again, that pang of guilt for things he couldn’t control. He forced a laugh and said, “Man, I was hoping it would have been a rager.”

“Some people were enraged, yes,” Holt said. “Particularly Boyle.”

“No, I meant ‘rager’ as in a wild party with drinks and fun,” Jake said.

“I’m not familiar with the slang,” Holt replied, “but Santiago did appear to be inebriated, and I know Gina was—”

“Okay, not helping,” Jake said. “Never mind. We’re almost there; I just need to take a few deep breaths…calm down…”

“Why are you so nervous?” Holt said. “You don’t have any reason to be.”

“I don’t know,” Jake said. “I’ve just never been in a situation like this before. I’m used to being prepared for anything, but I wasn’t trained for dealing with these emotions and Yahoo Answers doesn’t have many people who have faked their deaths giving advice.”

“Come on, Peralta,” Holt said as the cab pulled up in front of the precinct, “you’ll be fine. Now, stay out here and I will come get you after I have given everybody the news.”

Jake nodded and leaned against the wall to wait while Holt went inside.

“Everybody in the briefing room,” Captain Holt said as he strode out of the elevator. “I have big news.”

Amy perked up. She’d never heard the captain use the words big news before, but she couldn’t imagine it meant anything bad. Had the precinct won an award? Were crimes at a record low? She scanned her internal database for anything interesting that might be happening this time of year, but she couldn’t come up with anything big news-worthy.

Once everyone was seated, Holt took his usual place at the front of the room and immediately began speaking.

“Four months ago,” he said, “we held a funeral for Detective Jake Peralta.”

Amy felt like the wind had been knocked out of her. Thinking about Jake’s death still hurt, and the precinct found it was best for all of them not to bring it up. Why was Holt mentioning it now?

“Last night, I received a call from US Marshal Johnson, the marshal Detective Peralta had been working under. I was told he was alive.”

Amy’s breath caught, and she shook her head. “Sir, I think I must have misheard you…”

“You did not,” Holt said. Amy’s pulse raced as murmurs spread through the room. “Peralta was ordered to lie low in Maine after being compromised and subsequently shot. He survived, but Johnson faked his death for his safety while he recovered, and now that O’Bannon has been captured, he is free to return to New York.”

“Hey, guys.”

Amy whipped around in her seat at the sound of Jake’s voice and found him standing in the doorway with a sheepish grin on his face. Warmth washed over her and she felt rigid and weak all at the same time. Is this real? she thought. It is. It is real. It has to be real.

“Sorry, Captain, I couldn’t wait—”

Jake staggered under Amy’s weight as she all but threw herself out of her chair and into his arms. Her arms wrapped so tightly around his neck he almost couldn’t breathe, but he lifted his hands to hold her back and closed his eyes, breathing in her perfume and burying his face in her hair. When she finally drew back, one hand tangled in his hair and the other still wrapped around his neck, the look in her eyes sparkling with tears made his heart melt.

She pulled him back into a hug, crooning “I thought I’d never see you again” and “I missed you so much” and “I love you, Jake. Don’t you ever do that to me again” and yes, she sounded angry like he was afraid she would, but he didn’t care anymore. He just gathered her tighter into his arms and kissed the top of her head and felt her warmth and her heartbeat and her love.

And then more weight was added as Charles did his best to bear-hug the both of them, and he could feel Rosa slapping him on the back, and Terry ruffled his hair through joyous sniffles, and Gina managed to worm her way into the hug, too—something Jake would have to remember to tease her about later.

Later, there were drinks (a celebratory rager, as Holt had called it), and the ninety-ninth precinct became whole again as they recounted tales from the last four months and openly shared their love for one another.

“To Jake’s immortality!” Charles drunkenly toasted, and Jake laughed and shook his head as Charles attempted to clink glasses with everyone in the bar.

“No,” Jake said. “To my family.” He looked to Amy and wrapped his arm around her before glancing around at the rest of his squad. “You’re all incredible, and I missed you so much,” he said. “Nine-Nine!”

The chorus of Nine-Nine!s answered back as smoothly as they ever had, and at the end of the day with the sun setting on the horizon, they felt full and at peace with the world again.

Look: Being considered highly attractive on dating sites/apps isn’t just for Brad Pitt or jacked guys named “Chad.” You just have to know what kind of pics sell you well. So, typical scenario on OkCupid. I find a profile I at least rather, and perhaps quite like. Maybe even one where I think / “feel” we’re highly probable to make for a good – even excellent match. I message them, and … nothing. Statistically, that’s to be expected. For M messaging F on OkCuid, something roughly around 2/3 to 90% of those messages get zero response.

But alas, I “favorited” them, or gave them a (1-3) “star” rating.

I almost never give 4 of 5 stars – mostly because, at least as I recall, if one does that on OkCupid, it notifies them … and that’s likely counter productive – at least I’d think … whether I’d messaged them or not. Maybe if I’d already met ’em and know ’em fairly well, perhaps that would work fine – but otherwise I think it mostly would make any chance of mine with them only slightly less probable – so I almost never give 4 or 5 start ratings on OkCupid. International cupid sites. But I digress.

Alas, having favorited them, I also generally see their activity … various updates they make, they show in my searches, “matches” and activity, even often shows me when the logon. And, … that’s mostly just a slow bit of torture – as I’d already messaged them, hadn’t heard back – and in most cases/probabilities, never will. Likewise, they look at my profile – I see that … but again, most probably they’ll never message me back, and it’s mostly just more slow torture. Could message them again? Sure, … but that’s highly unlikely to get a response. If they didn’t respond to a first message, pretty darn improbable they’d respond to a second one – particularly if they’ve been on the site some hours or days or more since I sent them that message, and they’ve had more than ample time to read it and respond. So, a second message would, where they’d not replied at all to the first, at least most probably, would be a counter productive waste (and a bit more slow torture).

Well, … except there’s still the “sent messages” – they show up in there, unless/until I delete them. Maybe too, I’ll also start doing that at some point? But that’s not as critical – as once I “hide” the user, and remove them from favorites, “sent messages” is the only place on OkCupid I’ll ever see them again.

Unless you’re an admirator of the Toki Pona language. If the point is to be minimalist, at least let it be done right. Do you know why PUT, PATCH, and DELETE have never been implemented in web browser forms? Because they are useless and harmful. We can just use GET for read and POST for write. Or POST exclusively, when HTTP-level caching is unwanted. Other methods will at best get in your way, at worst ruin your day. You want to use PUT to update your resource? OK, but some Holy Specifications state that the data input has to be equivalent to the representation received via a GET. So what do you do with the numerous read-only parameters returned by GET (creation time, last update time, server-generated token…)? You omit them and violate the PUT principles? You include them anyway, and expect an “HTTP 409 Conflict” if they don’t match server-side values (forcing you to then issue a GET...)? You give them random values and expect servers to ignore them (the joy of silent errors)? Pick your poison, REST clearly has no clue what a read-only attribute it, and this won’t be fixed anytime soon. Meanwhile, a GET is dangerously supposed to return the password (or credit card number) which was sent in a previous POST/PUT; good luck dealing with such write-only parameters too. Did I forget to mention that PUT also brings dangerous race conditions, where several clients will override each other’s changes, whereas they just wanted to update different fields? You want to use PATCH to update your resource? Nice, but like 99% of people using this verb, you’ll just send a subset of resource fields in your request payload, hoping that the server properly understands the operation intended (and all its possible side effects); lots of resource parameters are deeply linked or mutually exclusive(ex. it’s either credit card OR paypal token, in a user’s billing info), but RESTful design hides this important information too. Anyway, you’d violate specs once more: PATCH is not supposed to just send a bunch of fields to be overridden. Instead, you’re supposed to provide a “set of instructions” to be applied on the resources. So here you go again, take your paperboard and your coffee mug, you’ll have to decide how to express these instructions. Often with handcrafted specifications, since Not-Invented-Here Syndrome is a de-facto standard in the REST world. (Edit: REST advocates have backpedaled on this subject, with Json Merge Patch, an alternative to formats like Json Patch) You want to DELETE resources? OK, but I hope you don’t need to provide substantial context data; like a PDF scan of the termination request from the user. DELETE prohibits having a payload. A constraint that REST architects often dismiss, since most webservers don’t enforce this rule on the requests they receive. How compatible, anyway, would be a DELETE request with 2 MBs of base64 query string attached? (Edit: the RFC 2616, indicating that payloads without semantics should be ignored, is now obsolete) REST aficionados easily profess that “people are doing it wrong” and their APIs are “actually not RESTful”. For example, lots of developers use PUT to create a resource directly on its final URL (/myresourcebase/myresourceid), whereas the “good way” (edit: according to many) of doing it is to POST on a parent URL (/myresourcebase), and let the server indicate, with an HTTP “Location” header, the new resource’s URL (edit: it’s not an HTTP redirection though). The good news is: it doesn’t matter. These rigorous principles are like Big Endian vs Little Endian, they occupy philosophers for hours, but have very little impact on real life problems, i.e “getting stuff done”. By the way… handcrafting URLs is always great fun. Do you know how many implementations properly urlencode() identifiers while building REST urls? Not that many. Get ready for nasty breakages and SSRF/CSRF attacks. When you forget to urlencode usernames in 1 of your 30 handcrafted URLs.The joy of REST error handlingAbout every coder is able to make a “nominal case” work. Error handling is one of these features which will decide if your code is robust software, or a huge pile of matchsticks. HTTP provides a list of error codes out-of-the-box. Great, let’s see that. Using “HTTP 404 Not Found” to notify about an unexisting resource sounds RESTful as heck, doesn’t it? Too bad: your nginx was misconfigured for 1 hour, so your API consumers got only 404 errors and purged hundreds of accounts, thinking they were deleted…. Our customers, after we deleted their gigabytes of kitten images by error.Using “HTTP 401 Unauthorized” when a user doesn’t have access credentials to a third-party service sounds acceptable, doesn’t it? However, if an ajax call in your Safari browser gets this error code, it might startle your end customer with a very unexpected password prompt [it did, years ago, YMMV]. HTTP existed long before “RESTful webservices”, and the web ecosystem is filled with assumptions about the meaning of its error codes. Using them to transport application errors is like using milk bottles to dispose of toxic waste: inevitably, one day, there will be trouble. Some standard HTTP error codes are specific to Webdav, others to Microsoft, and the few remaining have definitions so fuzzy that they are of no help. In the end, like most REST users, you’ll probably use random HTTP codes, like “HTTP 418 I’m a teapot” or unassigned numbers, to express your application-specific exceptions. Or you’ll shamelessly return “HTTP 400 Bad Request” for all functional errors, and then invent your own clunky error format, with booleans, integer codes, slugs, and translated messages stuffed into an arbitrary payload. Or you’ll give up altogether on proper error handling; you’ll just return a plain message, in natural language, and hope that the caller will be a human able to analyze the problem, and take action. Good luck interacting with such APIs from an autonomous program. The joy of REST conceptsREST has made a career out of boasting about concepts that any service architect in his right mind already respects, or about principles that it doesn’t even follow. Here are some excerpts, grabbed from top-ranked webpages. REST is a client-server architecture. The client and the server both have a different set of concerns. What a scoop in the software world. REST provides a uniform interface between components. Well, like any other protocol does, when it’s enforced as the lingua franca of a whole ecosystem of services. REST is a layered system. Individual components cannot see beyond the immediate layer with which they are interacting. It sounds like a natural consequence of any well designed, loosely coupled architecture; amazing. Rest is awesome, because it is STATELESS. Yes there is probably a huge database behind the webservice, but it doesn’t remember the state of the client. Or, well, yes, actually it remember its authentication session, its access permissions… but it’s stateless, nonetheless. Or more precisely, just as stateless as any HTTP-based protocol, like simple RPC mentioned previously. With REST, you can leverage the power of HTTP CACHING! Well here is at last one concluding point: a GET request and its cache-control headers are indeed friendly with web caches. That being said, aren’t local caches (Memcached etc.) enough for 99% of web services? Out-of-control caches are dangerous beasts; how many people want to expose their APIs in clear text, so that a Varnish or a Proxy on the road may keep delivering outdated content, long after a resource has been updated or deleted? Maybe even delivering it “forever”, if a configuration mistake once occurred? A system must be secure by default. I perfectly admit that some heavily loaded systems want to benefit from HTTP caching, but it costs much less to expose a few GET endpoints for heavy read-only interactions, than to switch all operations to REST and its dubious error handling. Thanks to all this, REST has HIGH PERFORMANCE! Are we sure of that? Any API designer knows it: locally, we want fine-grained APIs, to be able to do whatever we want; and remotely, we want coarse-grained APIs, to limit the impact of network round-trips. Here is again a domain in which “basic” REST fails miserably. The split of data between “resources”, each instance on its own endpoint, naturally leads to the N+1 Query problem. To get a user’s full data (account, subscriptions, billing information…), you have to issue as many HTTP requests; and you can’t parallelize them, since you don’t know in advance the unique IDs of related resources. This, plus the inability to fetch only part of resource objects, naturally creates nasty bottlenecks (edit: yes, you can stuff extensions like Compound/Partial Documents into your setup to help with that). REST offers better compatibility. How so? Why do so many REST webservices have “/v2/” or “/v3/” in their base URLs then? Backwards and forward compatible APIs are not hard to achieve, with high level languages, as long as simple rules are followed when adding/deprecating parameters. As far as I know, REST doesn’t bring anything new on the subject. REST is SIMPLE, everyone knows HTTP! Well, everyone knows pebbles too, yet people are happy to have better blocks when building their house. The same way XML is a meta-language, HTTP is a meta-protocol. To have a real application protocol (like “dialects” are to XML), you’ll need to specify lots of things; and you’ll end up with Yet Another RPC Protocol, as if there were not enough already. REST is so easy, it can be queried from any shell, with CURL! OK, actually, every HTTP-based protocol can be queried with CURL. Even SOAP. Issuing a GET is particularly straightforward, for sure, but good luck writing json or xml POST payloads by hand; people usually use fixture files, or, much more handy, full-fledged API clients instantiated directly in the command line interface of their favorite language. “The client does not need any prior knowledge of the service in order to use it”. This is by far my favourite quote. I’ve found it numerous times, under different forms, especially when the buzzword HATEOAS lurked around; sometimes with some careful (but insufficient) “except” phrases following. Still, I don’t know in which fantasy world these people live, but in this one, a client program is not a colony of ants; it doesn’t browse remote APIs randomly, and then decide how to best handle them, based on pattern recognition or black magic. Quite the opposite; the client has strong expectations on what it means, to PUT this one field to this one URL with this one value, and the server had better respect the semantic which was agreed upon during integration, else all hell might break loose. When you ask how HATEOAS is supposed to work.How to do REST right and quick?Forget about the “right” part. REST is like a religion, no mere mortal will ever grasp the extent of its genius, nor “do it right”. So the real question is: if you’re forced to expose or consume webservices in a kinda-RESTful way, how to rush through this job, and switch to more constructive tasks asap? Update: it turns out that there are actually lots of “standards” and industrialization efforts for REST, although I had never encountered them personnally (maybe because few people use them?). More information in my follow-up article. How to industrialize server-side exposure?Each web framework has its own way of defining URL endpoint. So expect some big dependencies, or a good layer of handwritten boilerplate, to plug your existing API onto your favorite server as a set of REST endpoint. Libraries like Django-Rest-Framework automate the creation of REST APIs, by acting as data-centric wrappers above SQL/noSQL schemas. If you just want to make “CRUD over HTTP”, you could be fine with them. But if you want to expose common “do-this-for-me” APIs, with workflows, constraints, complex data impacts and such, you’ll have a hard time bending any REST framework to fit your needs. Be prepared to connect, one by one, each HTTP method of each endpoint, to the corresponding method call; with a fair share of handmade exception handling, to translate passing-through exceptions into corresponding error codes and payloads. How to industrialize client-side integration?From experience, my guess is: you don’t. For each API integration, you’ll have to browse lengthy docs, and follow detailed recipes on how each of the N possible operations has to be performed. You’ll have to craft URLs by hand, write serializers and deserializers, and learn how to workaround the ambiguities of the API. Expect quite some trial-and-error before you tame the beast. Do you know how webservices providers make up for this, and ease adoption? Simple, they write their own official client implementations. FOR. EVERY. MAJOR. LANGUAGE. AND. PLATFORM. I’ve recently dealt with a subscription management system. They provide clients for PHP, Ruby, Python, .NET, iOS, Android, Java… plus some external contributions for Go and NodeJS. Each client lives in its own Github repository. Each with its own big list of commits, bug tracking tickets, and pull requests. Each with its own usage examples. Each with its own awkward architecture, somewhere between ActiveRecord and RPC proxy. This is astounding. How much time is spent developing such weird wrappers, instead of improving the real, the valuable, the getting-stuff-done, webservice? Sisyphus developing Yet Another Client for his API.ConclusionFor decades, about every programming language has functioned with the same workflow: sending inputs to a callable, and getting results or errors as output. This worked well. Quite well. With Rest, this has turned into an insane work of mapping apples to oranges, and praising HTTP specifications to better violate them minutes later. In an era where MICROSERVICES are more and more common, how come such an easy task — linking libraries over networks — remains so artificially crafty and cumbersome? I don’t doubt that some smart people out there will provide cases where REST shines; they’ll showcase their homemade REST-based protocol, allowing to discover and do CRUD operation on arbitrary object trees, thanks to hyperlinks; they’ll explain how the REST design is so brilliant, that I’ve just not read enough articles and dissertations about its concepts. I don’t care. Trees are recognized by their own fruits. What took me a few hours of coding and worked very robustly, with simple RPC, now takes weeks and can’t stop inventing new ways of failing or breaking expectations. Development has been replaced by tinkering. Almost-transparent remote procedure call was what 99% people really needed, and existing protocols, as imperfect as they were, did the job just fine. This mass monomania for the lowest common denominator of the web, HTTP, has mainly resulted in a huge waste of time and grey matter. REST promised simplicity and delivered complexity. REST promised robustness and delivered fragility. REST promised interoperability and delivered heterogeneity. REST is the new SOAP. EpilogueThe future could be bright. There are still tons of excellent protocols available, in binary or text format, with or without schema, some leveraging the new abilities of HTTP2… so let’s move on, people. We can’t forever remain in the Stone Age of Webservices. What I Learned from the Glucose Monitor

My fasting blood glucose has been creeping up over several years. (My fasting blood sugar is around 110, and HbA1c=5.7.) Recently, I tried a continuous glucose monitor for the first time, to see what I could learn about eating and exercise habits that affect my blood glucose. The experiment led me to some reading and thinking that was worthwhile, but the results themselves were disappointing, limited (first) by flaws in the technology and (second) by wide variability that I could not trace to any of the usual behavioral correlates.

Why concern ourselves with blood sugar?

Insulin is generated in the pancreas after we eat, with a cascade of effects on the body. The primary short-term effect is to prevent glucose levels in the blood from getting too high, by notifying the liver of the need to pull glucose out of the blood and store energy as fat.

Loss of insulin sensitivity is a primary hallmark of human aging. Most of the known life extension strategies in lab animals have to do with insulin in one way or another. For example, the worm gene daf-2 is the worm’s only insulin receptor, and mutating (weakening) the daf-2 gene doubles the worm’s lifespan. Life extension benefits of exercise and caloric restriction are thought to work, at least in part, through the insulin metabolism.

But glucose is also dangerous, and as we get older we are poisoned by excess sugar in the blood. High blood sugar leads to [list from Mayo Clinic]

Cardiovascular disease

Nerve damage (neuropathy)

Kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy) or kidney failure

Damage to the blood vessels of the retina (diabetic retinopathy), potentially leading to blindness

Clouding of the lens of your eye (cataract)

Feet problems caused by damaged nerves or poor blood flow that can lead to serious skin infections, ulcerations, and in some severe cases, amputation

Bone and joint problems

Teeth and gum infections

So for long-term health, the name of the game is to keep blood sugar down with as little insulin as possible, hence preservation of insulin sensitivity is the target. Metformin is a well-studied drug for keeping blood sugar down without insulin. I have been taking it (irregularly) for the last several years, intermixed with berberine and Gynostemma (Chinese name: jiaogulan = 绞股蓝).

This reasoning plus direct evidence for life extension in rodents and indirect evidence of life extension in humans has led me to take metformin, though it is not without side-effects.

Long-term effects of metformin

Metformin is a credible longevity drug, statistically associated with lower risk of cancer, heart disease and especially dementia in humans. Six years ago, this study laid the foundation for metformin as a longevity drug with the claim that people taking metformin had lower all-cause mortality, despite the fact that a population of type-2 diabetics was being compared to a healthier population. This finding inspired Nir Barzilai to raise support for the TAME study.

But metformin has its risks. A long-time contributor to this site, Dr Paul Rivas pointed me to evidence that metformin can interfere with exercise metabolism. Paul notes his personal experience with loss of peak performance while taking metformin. My own experience is consistent with this, though I have never done a rigorous A/B comparison. This study, demonstrating a small but consistent decrease in peak performance, appears to me to be well-designed and analyzed. A plausible mechanism is the interference of metformin with mitochondrial function [ref, ref]. This article claims that metformin suppresses synthesis of ATP, which is the reservoir of energy for immediate use in all cell types. Ben Miller has done the most direct and most recently relevant human experiments in this area and his findings suggest the intriguing possibility that metformin blocks exercise adaptations almost completely in about half of individuals, but not at all in the other half. (If you want to know which half you’re in, you’ll have to wait for next year’s study.)

For the majority of Westerners who exercise little or not at all, metformin may show reduction in long-term risk of age-related disease; but there is no data I know of on the subset of people who do vigorous exercise, comparing metformin to no metformin. Does metformin block the health effects of exercise? Rhonda Patrick cites credible references on this subject as fast as she can get the words out, and her conclusion is that exercise is a better anti-aging program than metformin, and you really can’t have both.

Do glucose-control herbs also blunt the benefits of exercise?

I wrote a few years ago listing botanical alternatives to metformin. Much less research has gone into these herbs, so we must think theoretically about interference with benefits of exercise.

Berberine works by a mechanism of action that overlaps metformin. Both metformin and berberine promote AMPK (which in turn promotes sugar burning). Both metformin and berberine inhibit mitochondrial Complex I (slowing the conversion of sugar to usable energy). There is tentative experimental evidence that (unlike metformin) berberine does not inhibit adaptations to exercise [ref, ref, ref].

Gynostemma is a Chinese herb popularized by Life Extension Foundation in their proprietary compound called AMPK Activator. In animal models and in humans, Gynostemma suppresses blood sugar and blood cholesterol. Like metformin and berberine, it works through AMPK, which appears to be a good thing. It is anti-inflammatory, and has a history in China as cancer therapy, supported by mouse and in vitro studies. In rodent studies, Gynostemma has a beneficial effect on strength and endurance [ref, ref, ref]. The one study I’ve found on human diabetes shows modest benefits after 12 weeks. The only counter-indication that I have seen is that it increases insulin release (in vitro), which I believe to be pro-aging.

Is it more important to suppress postprandial spikes or to depress fasting glucose levels?

HbA1c is a standard blood test for diabetes. It is related to average blood glucose levels over the previous 90 days (= the half-life of hemoglobin in the blood). But the glycation of hemoglobin (as measured by A1c) happens predominantly during the brief glucose spikes, rather than the much longer periods of average glucose levels. So it might be fairer to say that A1c summarizes peak glucose events over a 90-day period. And we might guess that the long-term health risks of high blood sugar are similarly more sensitive to the peaks than to the average.

I believe that apoptosis is on a hair trigger as we age, and part of the reason for this is too much p53. This study links P53 activation to postprandial glucose spikes, rather than to high average glucose levels. This study links deterioration in endothelial function (related to arterial disease) with glucose spikes. The same paper lists ROS and oxidative stress as additional risks.

For a long while, it has been established that high fasting blood sugar is associated with cardiovascular risk. Of course, there is also association with obesity and T2 diabetes, but for these, it is natural to think of fasting blood sugar as the result, rather than the cause.

Chris Kresser says the best indicator of metabolic health is blood glucose levels 2 hours after a meal. If you can bring your blood glucose down to normal within 2 hours after eating your insulin sensitivity is good. For me, unmedicated, it was 3 hours after dinner, but less than 2 hours after breakfast. Either berberine or metformin tamed the after dinner spikes within 2 hours.

Kresser claims that these guidelines from the American Diabetes Association are not strict enough, and that statistics show increased future risk of diabetes even for people in the ADA “normal” range. But he cites Petro Dobromylskyj, who makes an exception for anyone on a low-carb diet (how low isn’t specified). Paradoxically, low-carb diets are claimed to be healthy, even though they decrease insulin sensitivity. I have been unable to make sense of this.

Kresser emphasizes that all numbers should be interpreted in the context of a person’s other lifestyle and health indicators. In people who are active and not overweight, he is not inclined to worry about statistics in the “prediabetic” range. (I take comfort in this personally, and who can say if I’m fooling myself?) But I can learn something from the way my glucose stats respond to medications, eating and exercising, whether or not I believe the absolute levels are concerning.

Writing in Science Magazine last year, Charles Piller reviewed the ADA guidelines and found a consensus in the opposite direction — that they were probably too strict, and unnecessarily worrisome to a great many people. By ADA’s definition, 80 million Americans are “pre-diabetic”, which is 40% of the adult population. The conflict really is not over the statistics but the interpretation. You can say either “People with A1c levels above 6 are at increased risk of progressing to diabetes” or equally well, “Most people with A1c levels less than 6.4 will never develop diabetes.” Both statements are true.

As promised: my experience

The Freestyle Libre was very easy to use and set up. I followed the instructions and used a spring-loaded device to insert the monitor behind my biceps. It was painless. There’s a tiny wire that goes a few millimeters into the skin and an adhesive covering with a button containing the electronics.

The wearable button stores data for up to 8 hours. The other part of the kit is a reader that downloads data every time you bring the reader within an inch or two of the button. As long as you take a reading every 8 hours or less, you won’t lose any data. And you can do it as often as you like, to get real time feedback on your glucose state.

The wearable button ($45) is meant to last two weeks, and then it must be discarded. My insurance (Blue Cross Medicare Advantage) wouldn’t pay for it because I didn’t have a diagnosis of diabetes. I found this out only after several trips to the drug store, interspersed with phone calls to Blue Cross, where I got repeated assurances that it would be covered. The reader ($85) can be reused. Apparently, it doesn’t do anything that a cell phone app couldn’t do, but Abbott (parent company of Freestyle) has arranged it so that you can only use the cell phone app if you purchase the reader.

To analyze historic data, you can use capabilities built into the phone app, or plug the reader or cell phone into a computer, using a USB cable. The data is uploaded to a web site containing analysis tools and an option for creating a CSV file for more detailed manipulation in a spreadsheet. (The download button is not so easy to find, but I called Abbott’s tech support number, and connected without excessive wait time to a friendly and knowledgeable technician.)

My intention was to vary the glycemic content of my meals, my exercise schedule, eating and fasting schedule, and the medications I was taking (metformin and berberine) to learn what I could about glucose management. The first day I fasted, and I was concerned to see that all day my fasting glucose ranged between 110 and 120. (For reference: the standard healthy range for fasting glucose is 70-100. Below 70 is “hypoglycemia”. Above 100 is “pre-diabetes” and above 125 is “type 2 diabetes”.)

I ate a meal, and glucose shot up to 179 before bedtime, only gradually coming back down during the night. As it turned out, 179 was my high for the week.

The data is cut off after 10 days, though the monitor is supposed to have a lifetime of 14, because it fell off my arm. I looked for patterns in my data, and was able to learn only four things:

Glucose rose after a meal. (I didn’t get as far as being able to distinguish a meal with more carbs from a meal with more fiber or protein.)

Glucose also rose, to a lesser extent, when I exercised.

Taking metformin with a meal substantially reduced the glucose spike after the meal, and raising the glucose trough a few hours later. The range (stdev) but not the average glucose was affected.

Taking berberine did not have this immediate effect.

There was a strong downward trend over the 10 days. I interpreted this to mean that the monitor was gradually loosening in my skin, probably because I am a long-distance swimmer.

(In a long phone support session with an Abbott representative, they acknowledged the reality of my experience: that the monitor can loosen over time, resulting in readings that are anomalously low. They were happy to replace the monitor, and advised me against long periods of swimming. )

Unresolved

I was left wondering all the things I wanted to discover at the beginning of my experiment.

What kinds of meals minimize the glucose spike? High fat? High fiber? High protein?

Could exercise before or after the meal help tame the spike?

Could I detect short- and long-term effects of metformin, berberine, and jiaogulan?

The thing that impressed me most was the natural variability of blood sugar, changing from hour to hour, uncorrelated with either food or exercise. I trust the body knows what it’s doing. “Le corps a ses raisons que la raison ne connait pas.”*

I hope to try the monitor for 2 weeks again when swimming season is over.

In the meantime, I am taking a modest, common-sense approach. I am going to leave out metformin but continue daily exercise and low doses of berberine and Gynostemma, lightening my evening meal and ending the day’s food 3 hours before bedtime.

Walking burns calories (pulls sugar from the blood) 3 to 5 times as fast as sitting, and walking after a meal feels like a natural and pleasant thing to do. My doctor recommends it. I’m going to try walking half an hour after breakfast and dinner, pending my next experiment with the CGM.

Advertising is something that has gotten so big over time. Whether it’s promoting your business on Facebook or watching during the commercial breaks at the Super Bowl, advertising is everywhere. With the rise of social media, we see advertisements on all different sites daily. Not gonna lie, most of the clothes that I buy are because of accidental scrolls through Facebook at 11pm. One thing that I’ve noticed is that, advertisements seem to appeal straight to me, which I find creepy. I always feel like someone’s listening to me when I talk about certain things. For example, I was discussing a Christmas work party where we rent an AIRBNB in Niagara-On-The-Lake for a night, and the next day… BAM! “Here are some AIRBNB’s in NOTL priced as low as $99 per night!” I always get so concerned when I see this, but it’s because everything we look up, search, and click on, creates advertisements for us. You see, advertising companies are smart these days. The target people who are searching the web for things they are interested in, and provide these people with offers that relate to their desires. If I search pizza places open past 2am on a Friday night, I guarantee the next day I’ll be seeing advertisements for Pizza Pizza. It’s almost an invasion of privacy, but if you think deeply into it, these companies are just trying to give us what we want (with their profit though).

This week in my seminar, we discussed what it means to be a consumer and and audience member. Often times, audience members don’t acknowledge that they are being used. Then we are notified when a new show similar to the ones we have previously watched releases, so we spend more time on the website. We don’t think that by us paying to watch these shows every day, not only are we giving them our money, but also our feedback. Feedback is important for these companies because it allows them to understand what content is reaching what audience and what else people want to see.

Something that we talked about in lecture that has really sparked my imagination is the thought of audience members as “objects.” What if we really don’t have a choice when making decisions, the media is choosing for us? I think this is extremely crazy to think about, but also makes total sense. Back to Netflix, I may think I'm choosing what movie to watch, But didn’t Netflix already choose it for me when they placed it at the very top of my Recommended Page? What about when I choose where to go for dinner with my friends on a Friday night? Did I pick TGIFridays? Or did the advertisement I saw on Facebook of their 2 for 1 app night choose for me? It’s a crazy concept actually, that we think we are making these decisions for ourselves that give us a sense of pleasure, but to find out that most of the choices we make aren’t really our choices, or that they were influenced by something else, it’s tough to hear in my opinion. Definitely going to consider this now when choosing which shows to watch or where to go for dinner next time.

Something else we talked about this week in lecture was the idea that producers have turned us into data. Like I said before, they need our feedback to profit, so basically we are like little chickens doing the work for them. Everytime we google a film, we are showing interest that we might some day watch it, which even then is enough to show that it’s sparking interest. Then it will show up on streaming sites, right in front of our eyes, seeming more appealing than ever. It seems like they always catch you when you’re alone. Speaking of catching you whenever you’re alone, have you ever seen those sad dog commercials on TV during commercial breaks? The ones where the dogs are crying and sick and they need you to adopt or donate to them? Those commercials always seem to come on when it’s 10pm and I’m in my pajamas with a bowl of ice cream. I have this theory that they can see me through the screen, and wait for me to enter a vulnerable state. There’s been many times I've wanted to donate, because they make me feel so bad for those poor puppies. What I don’t think about, is how that’s exactly what the producers of the commercial want. They want you to feel upset because they know guilt is the best way to convince someone to buy into something. It’s almost a shame for them to do that, but it’s almost always for a good cause. It’s a smart marketing tool, and I’m sure there have been many times where people donate based on guilt or sadness for the puppies, but they don’t think that they are seeing themselves as bait.

Think about those who sell girl scout cookies. It’s usually girls between the ages of 4-9 with these cute, guilt tripping smiles that look devastated if you get any less than 4 boxes. This is technically a marketing scheme, because if you think about it, these kids aren’t the ones who need this money that they make from selling the cookies, it’s the organizers of girl scouts who do. They put out prizes as motivation for those who can sell the most and it becomes a neighbourhood war for who can sell the most in the suburban areas. I like to think of it as a fisherman scenario, the boat is the amount of cookies sold (keeping girl scouts in business), the fisherman is the producer, the children in the girl scouts are the bait, and we are the fish.
