Grease Monkey - Harrison Osterfield
Summary: You work at an auto shop with your dad, Harrison’s car is having trouble and leaves it at the shop. Word count: 1,947 Warnings: None
“Hey im Mark, how can I help you with?”
“My car just needs new tires”
“Since we are all booked today, we can set you up for tomorrow at one, two or three in the afternoon. Do you have your own wheels or do you want to buy?”
“It doesn’t really matter since I will be leaving the car here. I’ll just buy the wheels”
“Okay, that’s fine with us, let me print out some papers so you can decide what wheels you would want,” the guy printed out, “I’ll give you two options, there’s the fifty thousand miles and the sixty thousand miles, if you decide on the sixty we will be working on it on Friday since we need to get them delivered over here and fifty is a great deal, still a great mark and it’s less expensive”
“I’ll do the fifty, also, there’s this clinking noise coming from the back I don’t know if you can check that for me”
“We can check it for you it might be part of the wheeling problem or be part of the car, what side is it on?”
“The back left, well that’s what I hear when I’m driving”
“Okay we can check that up on you, can I get a name”
“Harrison Osterfield”
“Harrison spell me your last name”
“O-s-t-e-r-f-i-e-l-d”
“Address and phone number,” Harrison gave the guy his address and his phone number, “we will call you if the clinking noise is coming from the wheel section or the car and it will be ready tomorrow by seven”
“That will be perfect, thank you so much mate”
“Have a nice day,” Harrison walked out meeting Tom in the other car
“All set, Yeah, let’s go,” Harrison’s friend, Tom drove back home.
—————————— Next Day
“Y/n,” your dad called out to you “She’s fixing Eric’s truck, I wonder where he got the truck because it’s always having issues”
“I’m not the owner Henry”
“Y/n”
“Hold on, give me one,” you moved the stick shift “fix it,” you walked over to your dad, “what’s up”
“I need you to check up on one car after your lunch break, it’s out in the front, needs tire change and check on the back left side the owner said that it makes a noise”
“Okay, you can call Dave telling him that his stick shift was loosen and I tightened it up and that when you turn on the engine, it was to pieces that’s why it was also hard to turn the car on,” your dad hands you the car keys, “of course, a Land Rover”
“Just go fix it and since it’s your last car you’re going to turn it in to the owner”
“What about Henry?”
“He’s gonna be working on another car, it’s the end of your shift as well”
“Fine”
——
“Hello”
“Is this Mr. Osterfield Harrison”
“This is him”
“Hello Mr.Osterfield. I’m calling from Jermon’s auto repair shop”
“Just call me Harrison”
“Okay, anyways, the clinking is the wheel bearing, and you definitely need to get it changed, we can for sure change it here within an hour or so”
“I thought it was supposed to be done by seven in the afternoon”
“Do you want your car or not?” You sassed “I’ll be there. What’s the total?”
“Give me a sec,” you scrolled down to the bottom of the page, “five hundred and fifty one with eighty cents”
“Thank you,” you were excited to see who this guy was since he did sounded young on the phone. You walked back to the car seeing your father fixing the car, “Okay I called”
“Lucky he came here just on time if not he could’ve been in trouble, here you don’t fully take it out, you loosen it up a bit so it can easily. Raise the car up just a little we will need to take the oil out first before we can change the bearing. The center of the rotor will have a dust cap, use a screwdriver and a hammer to take the dust cap off but do it gently,” You hit the cap until it was off, “now there will be the cotter pin and castle nut. Grab the rotor and pull it towards you- there ya go now use a screwdriver to remove the inner bearing grease seal”?
—
There was a black clean truck pulling up, and off came a guy, “hi how’s it going?”
“I’m Harrison Osterfield,” a guy in his early twenties walked in
“Come right over and we can check you out,” Henry clicked on a few things, “are you paying cash or card?”
“Card”
“Swipe or insert when the arrow turns blue,” Harrison guy stared at the machine, “do you want the recipe printed or emailed?”
“Printed please. Were you the one who fixed my car?” Henry printed out the papers
“My co-worker and her dad were the ones who fixed it. I’ll have her drop your car in the front,” Henry got up and walk towards you
“Is the owner here,” you cleaned your hands on a rag and got in the car. There was a guy standing with another guy talking
“Harrison Osterfield,” you called out a curly dirty blonde guy looked up seeing his blue eyes., “here you go,”
“I’ll meet you back at the house,” the other one got in his truck and drove off
“Your car is good to go”
“Thank you,” you gave him a smile he is a very good looking guy
“Yeah no problem”
“Can I set an appointment?” Harrison asked
“We can go inside and schedule you for another appointment”
“No, can I set an appointment for a date. If you don’t have a boyfriend,” you but the inside of your check not wanting to jump up and down in front of him
“Your smooth. I’ll send you when I’m available”
“You don’t have my number”
“Yeah but our system does, I’ll text you then Harrison”
“Sounds good,” Harrison got in the car and drove off. You calmly walked back inside and squealed jumping in excitement. Your phone starts to ring
“Hello”
“I see a customer who I think is having a seizure”
“HEY THATS ME!”
“Seems like you want to say something, come over here grease monkey,” you hang up and walked out to your dad
“Guess who-got asked out-on a date?” You jumped around your father
“Me?” Your dad fanned himself, “do they not know I’m happily married”
“No, me!”
“Did you force the poor guy?” Henry shouted
“Shut up Henry and no I did not”
“I’m gonna get his number and see what I can wear for our date,” you walked back inside and searched for Harrison’s number.
——
“I actually thought you wouldn’t send me a message”
“Well Harrison, you thought wrong. Where are we going”
“Just wait”
“You know my dad knows I went with you, my brother is a hacker, my mom is a cop. So choose wisely on your moves”
“Oh shit, no way”
“Seriously, as long as you don’t bury me alive inside a ditch we will go just fine”
“Well this took a sharp turn but here we are”
“You serious?”
“You don’t like it?”
“I love this place. I love the milkshakes here and they make amazing chicken stripes and the fries go very well with the shake”
“My family owes this place”
“Are you serious?”
“I’m being serious, I take over late nights and sometimes mornings usually when it gets busy”
“Is this where you take all the girls you ask out”
”Actually, since this is considered a fast food restaurant. Other girls consider it as a fattening place,” Harrison turned off the engine, “give me a sec, stay here,” Harrison quickly gets out of the car jogging to your side and opening the door
“You’re a gentleman”
“My parents taught me well,” you were nervous like no other. Yeah you’ve been on a couple of dates here and there but this one felt different. Especially since other guys don’t open doors for you when you’re out on a date.
“Haz, what brings you here?
“I’m on a date. Gina this is y/n, y/n, this is Gina”
“I know who you are, I come here very often,” Gina looked surprised,
“Oh, okay. Go sit down and I’ll be there in a few,” she walked to the back, “Harrison brought a date,” Gine smiled widely
“Who is she?” Charlotte asked
“She comes here every other day. She really likes the milkshakes,” Gina shrugged
“Is she the one who works at the auto shop?” Charlotte wasn’t sure if she got the right person or not
“Yeah. That’s the girl and her name is y/n. She really loves the strawberry and chocolate milkshakes” Jim stared through the open window
“Of course she’s going to like it, she’s not like the other ones who freaks out about everything,” they all went back to work
——
“That was actually pretty great, thank you”
“No problem, I’ve never had that much fun on just milkshakes”
“Hey look, a guy is having trouble, can we pull over?”
“Yeah, you know more about cars than I do,” Harrison pulled behind him, the both of you got out of the car, “hey mate, you alright?”
“No, I don’t know what’s wrong with this, I recently got this car from the dealer and I’m trying to reach my wife but she won’t answer her damn phone”
“Let me take a look at this”
“Please girl, don’t touch it”
“Sir, please let her do her thing, she knows more about cars than the both of us combined,” you looked at the car smiling down, Harrison had your back.
“Okay, well nothing major is wrong but the battery has a lose wire, I’ve fixed cars like this, even if you get the battery running it will still turn off. I can call a towing truck for you”
“Please, I don’t have any numbers with me,” you quickly dialed the number
“Thank you for calling Jermon’s auto repair shop this is Mark”
“Mark it’s y/n, I need a towing truck by Sherrers Lane and Wenting street near the milkshake shop”
“I’ll send one right away, it will probably take seven minutes with no traffic”
“Great, Thanks Mark,” the line ended and you looked at the guy, “towing truck should be here in seven-ish minutes, I can give you the number in the shop I work,”
“That would be fantastic,” you gave the guy the phone number, “I can take it from here”
“No problem, just don’t judge a girl right away,” you saw Harrison nod at the guy
“How long have you two been together?”
“Oh we aren’t really together,” you slowly walked away Harrison said his goodbye before getting in the car
“You know, I rather have a girl who knows more about cars work on my engine,” You looked over at Harrison, “like car wise not the other stuff well I mean-ugh why do I do this to myself,” you saw a flustered Harrison
“Keep going, it’s cute”
“Do you need to go home right now or can you still be out”
“I can still be out, where are you taking me?”
“I hope you don’t mind walks”
“I don’t mind at all,” Harrison parked the car and got out, right when you were about to open, he opened the door for you, “you know, guys usually don’t open doors for me”
“Well if I get a second date I’ll be opening doors for you,” you smiled at the ground
“I’ll see if we get a second date

The challenges of implementing a cashless society and what it means for the hobby
A recent article by Oz Shy, senior policy adviser and economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, drew some interesting conclusions based upon a multitude of studies that have been conducted over the years to investigate the behaviors displayed by consumers in a variety of situations. While the concept of a cashless society has been thrust into the ether for some time, new developments in nations that have adopted these systems have once again brought this topic to the forefront of discussion. The notion of the U.S. becoming a cashless society is a controversial one and often sparks furious debate, with opinions ranging from cashless societies ushering in either a utopian future or a dystopian one. One example of this debate has coalesced around China’s implementation of WeChat and Alipay in combination with its Social Credit System, the latter of which has drawn widespread criticism from the West. Despite the adoption of cashless transaction systems by several nations abroad, the United States remains unlikely to follow in the near future, given the continued dominance of cash for use in small transaction payments and for individuals who fall on the lower spectrum of household income.
The largely data-driven article by Shy provides a detailed look into the financial behaviors of Americans as they relate to overall transaction amounts and yearly household income. The first chart in Shy’s article displays observations of in-person purchases made by 2,062 survey respondents in six merchant categories during the 2017 Survey and Diary of Consumer Payment Choice. These six categories are described as “(1) Grocery stores, convenience stores without gas stations, pharmacies, (2) gas stations, (3) sit-down restaurants and bars, (4) fast-food restaurants, coffee shops, cafeterias, food trucks, (5) general merchandise stores, department stores, other stores, and (6) general services: hairdressers, auto repair, parking lots, laundry or dry cleaning, etc.” What is interesting to note about this chart is that as the payment amount of purchases increased in dollar value, the percentage of transactions that used cash or prepaid card for payment decreased, while credit card, debit card, and check payments increased in frequency. This was inversely true for smaller payment amounts, where cash largely dominated. What can be taken away from this is that cashless payments are preferable to consumers in higher-value transactions, whereas cash is preferable in lower-value ones.
The second chart Shy uses in his article was generated from survey respondents in the same study providing their demographic information regarding their yearly household income (from $0-$120,000) and whether or not they use credit and debit cards. Data in the second chart correlates higher household income with an increased likelihood of credit card adoption, or adoption of both credit and debit cards, as well as a lower likelihood of using neither type of card. At $10,000 or less yearly household income, 21.1% of respondents said that they had neither debit nor credit cards, but the highest percentage went to those who said that they used debit only. Between $10,000-$20,000 yearly household income, about half of respondents claimed to use both cards. At the median 2017 U.S. family income of $61,372, card adoption was almost ubiquitous, with only 3% using neither credit nor debit cards.
The box plot that follows the second chard in Shy’s article combines data from the first two portions and examines two different groups regardless of yearly household income: Those who carry both credit and debit cards, and those who carry neither. For respondents that carry both credit and debit cards, they made the most payments with debit (36.1%) and the fewest with check (1.2%). However, the highest average payment value was relegated to checks ($303.75), whereas the lowest average payment value again was associated with cash ($14.12). For respondents that did not carry either credit or debit cards, most payments were made with cash (86.4%), followed by prepaid cards (12.2%) and checks (1.4%). Cash was also used for the lowest average payment value for those who do not have credit or debit cards ($29.59), while checks made up the highest average payment value ($100.16).
The third chart focuses primarily on the cash usage percentage for respondents who have both credit and debit cards, respondents with only debit cards, respondents with just credit cards, and respondents with neither. While prepaid cards and checks are still sometimes used by those who do not have credit or debit cards, findings in the 2017 Survey and Diary of Consumer Payment Choice indicate that cash still makes up the vast majority of their purchases, with checks and prepaid cards considered by the study to be outliers from the norm.
Now that we’ve digested all of this data, what does it mean for the future of cashless societies and coin collecting?
CCTV cameras. Photo by Quevaal.
In an era where privacy is largely considered a luxury instead of a right, cash offers a rare solace from the intruding eyes of others, since it ironically leaves little to no paper trail. While not mentioned in Shy’s article, the aforementioned reason, which has been extensively discussed, is possibly one explanation for why higher income individuals still use cash in certain transactions. Concern for privacy also correlates with the rise of cryptocurrency. Cash will likely continue to dominate small transactions and still forms the overall backbone of purchases made by low-income individuals, for whom it is more difficult to obtain credit cards or set up a bank account. For these individuals, Shy has constructed a theoretical model which proposes that prepaid cards are the most feasible alternative to acquiring credit or debit cards in a cashless society. Shy also mentions a study by Chen, Huynh, and Shy (2019), in which consumers’ decision to not use cash was partially influenced by the “burden” of receiving coins in their change.
Hover to zoom.
Considering the previous point that modern coins in pocket change are commonly considered a burden by consumers, what does this mean for the future of numismatics? Those who enjoy collecting coins will continue to do so, but the general lack of rare and valuable coins in circulation may have an impact on the attraction of new collectors to the hobby, as most hobbyists often describe their interest starting by finding a unique and exciting coin in their pocket change. The Great American Coin Hunt was an excellent idea, as it temporarily re-invigorated the hobby by encouraging the release of fantastic coins back into circulation and brought back the nostalgia of simply finding a great coin in one’s pocket change instead of looking for one online, at a coin shop, or at an auction. More will need to be done, however, to draw new people into the hobby, as many younger collectors now describe their interest coming from coins that their relatives have passed on to them rather than discovering fascinating coins in their own change.
On a more positive note, will the United States Mint’s new 2019-W quarters, struck at the famous West Point Mint and released into everyday circulation, make a difference? Perhaps—Red Book senior editor calls them “one of the most exciting coin programs issued by the U.S. Mint in many years” and estimates their retail value to be $25 or more in average Mint State (with higher-grade “gem” examples selling in the hundreds of dollars). “As more collectors become aware of these coins, and realize they need them to complete their sets, demand should rise,” said Garrett.

Creator’s transparent burger robot doesn’t grind your brisket and chuck steak into a gourmet patty until you order it. That’s just one way this startup, formerly known as Momentum Machines, wants to serve the world’s freshest cheeseburger for just $6. On June 27th, after eight years in development, Creator unveils its first robot restaurant before opening to the public in September. We got a sneak peek…err…taste.
When I ask how a startup launching one eatery at a time could become a $10 billion company, Creator co-founder and CEO Alex Vardakostas looks me dead in the eye and says, “the market is much bigger than that.”
youtube
Here’s how Creator’s burger-cooking bot works at its 680 Folsom Street location in San Francisco. Once you order your burger style through a human concierge on a tablet, a compressed air tube pushes a baked-that-day bun into an elevator on the right. It’s sawed in half by a vibrating knife before being toasted and buttered as it’s lowered to conveyor belt. Sauces measured by the milliliter and spices by the gram are automatically squirted onto the bun. Whole pickles, tomatoes, onions and blocks of nice cheese get slices shaved off just a second before they’re dropped on top.
Meanwhile, the robot grinds hormone-free, pasture-raised brisket and chuck steak to order. But rather than mash them all up, the strands of meat hang vertically and are lightly pressed together. They form a loose but auto-griddleable patty that’s then plopped onto the bun before the whole package slides out of the machine after a total time of about five minutes. The idea is that when you bite into the burger, your teeth align with the vertical strands so instead of requiring harsh chewing it almost melts in your mouth.
If you want to be the first to try it, Creator is selling early access tickets at 10am Pacific today. Otherwise it will be open for lunch Wednesdays and Thursdays until the public launch. Eventually, an app will let people customize the exact ratios of all the ingredients, unlocking near infinite permutations.
For now, the startup’s initial pre-set burger options include the classic-style Creator vs. The World with a mole Thousand Island special sauce, the oyster aioli Tumami Burger designed by Chef Tu of Top Chef, The Smoky with charred onion jam and the sunflower seed tahini Dad Burger from Chef Nick Balla of Bar Tartine.
The taste of each is pretty remarkable. The flavor pops out of all the fresh-cut and ground ingredients that lack the preservatives of pre-sliced stuff. The patties hold together as you munch despite being exceedingly tender. And afterwards I felt less of the greasy, gut-bomb, food coma vibe that typically accompanies scarfing down a cheeseburger.
“This is the kind of burger you would get for $12 to $18 [at an upscale restaurant], and it’s $6,” says Vardakostas. It might not be the best burger I’ve had in my life, but it’s certainly the best at that price. A lot of that comes from the savings on labor and kitchen space afforded by a robot cook. “We spend more on our ingredients than any other burger restaurant.”
The CEO wouldn’t reveal how much Creator has raised, but says it’s backed by Google’s GV, frequent food startup investor Khosla Ventures and hardware-focused Root Ventures. However, SEC filings attained by TechCrunch show the startup raised at least $18.3 million in 2017, and sought $6 million more back in 2013.
It’s understandable why. “McDonald’s is a $140 billion company. It’s bigger than GM and Tesla combined. McDonald’s has 40,000 restaurants. Food is one to the top three biggest markets,” Vardakostas rattles off. “But we have a lot of advantages. The average restaurant is 50 percent bigger in terms of square footage.” Then he motions to his big robot that’s a lot smaller than the backside of most fast-food restaurants, and with a smile says, “That’s our kitchen. You roll it in and plug it in.”

Creator co-founder and CEO Alex Vardakostas
What you want in a founder is a superhero origin story. Some formative moment in their life that makes them hellbent on solving a problem. Vardakostas has a pretty convincing tale. “My parents have a burger joint,” he reveals. “My job was to make several hundred of the same burger every day. You realize there’s so much opportunity not taken because you don’t have the right tools, and it’s hard work.”
Robots and engineering weren’t even on his radar growing up in the restaurant in southern California. Then, “when I was 15 my dad took me to a book store for the first time. I started reading about physics and realizing that this could be a possibility.” He went on to study physics at UC Santa Barbara, got to work in the garage, and finally drove up to Silicon Valley to machine the first robot prototype’s parts at the famous Silicon Valley TechShop.
That’s when he met his co-founder and COO Steve Frehn. “Steve told me he was from Stanford and I was super intimidated,” Vardakostas recalls. But the two had a great working rapport, and a knack for recruiting budding mechanical engineers from the college. Momentum Machines started in 2009, was a full-time garage project by 2010, incorporated and joined Lemnos Labs in 2012 and the startup began to make serious progress by 2014.
In the meantime, other entrepreneurs have tried to find a business in food robots. There was the now-defunct Y Combinator startup Bistrobot that haphazardly spurted liquid peanut butter and Nutella on white bread and called it a sandwich. More recently, Miso Robotics’ burger-flipping arm named Flippy made headlines, even though all it does is flip and cook patties on a traditional griddle. “We have an arm that pulls out the burgers, but that’s probably 5 percent of the complexity” of the full Creator robot run by 350 sensors, 50 actuators and 20 computers, Vardakostas scoffs.
Breaking burger behavior
The CEO’s past in the kitchen keeps Creator in touch with the human element. He tells me he thinks the idea of a staff-less restaurant where you order on a computer sounds “dystopian.” In fact, he wants to give his food service employees access to new careers. Vardakostas says with a sigh that “people look at restaurant work as a charity case, but man, we just need a chance.” Referring to the old Google policy of letting employees try out side projects, he explains how “Tech companies get 10 percent time but no one does that for restaurant workers.”
“Something we got really excited about in 2012 and we’re just starting to execute on is reinventing the job of working in a store like this, where the machine it taking care of the dirty and dangerous work,” his co-founder Frehn explains. “We’re playing around with education programs for the staff. Five percent of the time they’re paid just to read. We’re already doing that. There’s a book budget. We’re paying $16 an hour. As opportunities come up to fix the machine, there’s a path we’re going to offer people as repair or maintenance people to get paid even more.”
One tradition Creator couldn’t escape was French fries. Vardakostas says they’re basically the least healthy thing you can eat, noting they’re “worse than donuts because there’s more surface area exposed to the frier.” But chefs told him some people simply wouldn’t eat a burger without them. Creator’s compromise is that burgers are paired with hearty miniature farro or seasonal veggie salads by default, but you can still opt for a side of frites.
Creator’s fate won’t just be determined by the burger robot and the people who work alongside it. The startup will have to prove to fast food diners that it can be just as quick and cheap but a lot tastier, and that they’re welcome amongst the restaurant’s bougie Pottery Barn decor. At the same time, it must convince more affluent eaters that a cafeteria-style ordering counter and low price don’t mean low quality. Oh, and the name is a bit rich for a burger spot.
For now, Creator won’t be licensing out its bot or franchising its restaurant, though those could be lucrative. “I don’t want someone putting frozen beef in there or charging way more,” says Vardakostas. Instead, the goal is to methodically expand, and maybe take advantage of its petite footprint to move into airport terminals or bus stations. “We want to get out of San Francisco,” Frehn confidently concludes. “Our business model is pretty simple. We take a really good burger that people like and sell it for half the price.”

My car is a 1994 Lexus ES300 with 125,000+ miles on it. I would say it is in good or fair condition, the leather seats are cracking badly and it has a few scrathes, etc. I'm just wandering if it is in my best interest to repair this car or for it to be totaled out. The estimate for repairs in $3500.00, which could always go up once repairs start for unseen damage. I'm just not sure the car is worth repairing for that amount considering its condition. The damage is to the drivers side rear panel which is now rubbing something when I turn either way or go over any kind of bump in the road. The estimate does not consider repair for that since that could not be seen by looking at the vehicle. They are also saying the paint can't be matched perfectly because of the fading caused by sun and weather over the years. With everything considered my resale value is not good. I did want to sale this car at some point and get newer car.""

Does Car Insurance increase after an accident on Learner Insurance.?
Hi, I am a few weeks away from my test, and have been driving with my parents with my mums car. I have insurance on the car for a month with a private website. Today, I had an accident with another learner, where the edge of my car scraped the edge of the learner's car. The damage was only a few scratches, but apparently it's going to cost around 300. My dad is pondering whether to go privately and pay the learner the money, or go through the insurance I have. His main concern is that if I go through insurance, then when I pass, my insurance price will be a lot higher than without. If I pass and get insurance, will this accident be notified by the companies, who may increase the price of my insurance? Thanks""

How much will my car insurance go up because of a ticket?
The other day, I was in a hurry to get to school, and I was pulled over going 70mph in a 45mph speed zone. ’71 Hemi ’Cuda Convertible Dream Car
Certain cars have always been objects of desire, and like many other things in life, they usually have a particular pecking order of desirability and rarity. In the Mopar world it would be extremely difficult to argue that the pinnacle of desire, and at the very top of the Pentastar food chain lays the ’71 Hemi ’Cuda convertible. With only seven domestic examples made, and when reduced down even further with only two equipped with a four-speed, it doesn’t get much rarer. When you have anything that exists in single digits, the law of supply and demand comes into play, and the price to play is usually substantial. We had to do a double take when Bruce Bunner told us that a ’71 Hemi ’Cuda convertible was the car of his dreams, and at one point came very close to actually owning one of the two four-speed cars built in 1971.
As a young lad, Bruce was into the whole car scene at an early age and he freely boasts, “I have always been a Mopar fan.” His first car was a ’68 Super Bee. It was 383 powered with a four-speed and was painted Bright Blue with a white vinyl top and white interior. That was purchased with money that he was earning while working at Eldora Drag Raceway in Fairmont, West Virginia. It was at that venue that he first set eyes on the ’71 Hemi ’Cuda convertible of his desires. “One of the owner’s of the facility had it and ran it at the track,” he recalls. For those who are wondering, that particular car was the one that was lettered up as the “Mountain Mopar” and raced during the mid ’70s and would later sell in the millions. With the passing of time he moved on with his life but never forgot about that drop-top.
With the idea of someday owning the convertible regularly on his mind, in the late ’90s he decided to see if he could track down the owner and check if the car was for sale. After many calls and numerous inquiries, Bruce found him. “He was glad to hear from me again,” he recalls. Believe it or not, he still owned the ’71 ’Cuda. It was up on blocks where it had been left years before at the back of his garage.” With all that effort put into tracking it down, the goal was to buy it. The owner was very reluctant to discuss selling it but eventually came up with a price for it. As Bruce recalls, “His asking price wasn’t bad compared to today’s prices, but it was more than I had. I begged my wife to let me get a loan to buy it, but she just couldn’t see going into debt over a car.” Since he wasn’t able buy it, he figured that he would at least cash in with a finder’s fee. He had spotted a magazine ad offering money for information on rare Mopars up for sale, so as a result of his lead, the ’Cuda deal was brokered and it went to a new home in Texas, and Bruce ended up with some extra spending money in his pocket.
That chapter was behind him, but it didn’t get him any closer to his dream car. Setting the convertible idea aside, or perhaps buying an original Hemi hardtop, he figured that the only way to go forward was to build one to his tastes that he could afford. He was a long-standing member of the Muscle Car Mafia car club in his native West Virginia so he enlisted the aid of its members in the search for a decent starting point. On a trip to Las Vegas, one the members spotted a ’71 ’Cuda that he thought was a solid candidate for what he was looking for. It was, however, not without its issues – it was sitting in a police impound lot, and it’s owner was in prison. As it sat, it had a race-prepped 440 six-barrel with an equally worked 727 TorqueFlite and was set up as a track car. While it initially had the appearance of being a structurally solid car, the interior was heavily damaged from baking in the Nevada desert sun.
Miraculously he was able to get the deal done in a month and eventually had the car shipped back to Pennsylvania. What Bruce had acquired was actually a ’71 Barracuda originally powered by a 318 and backed by a 904 three-speed automatic. It rolled out of the Hamtramck assembly plant painted in Tunisian Tan Iridescent with a white vinyl top and Chestnut interior, which was still in place but badly weathered. It had also suffered a number of color changes at some point in its life with red beneath a metallic purple. None of it mattered because the ’Cuda was going down to bare metal. Mounted on his homemade rotisserie, he set out to strip the body down, photograph, document, and bag every part. Once he had the body bare, it was sent off to the dipper and all the Bondo and paint layers were removed. What he ended up with was a remarkably solid rust-free car, which was perfect. Since he wasn’t trying to actually build a nut and bolt clone, the goal was to reassemble something that hit the marks on both the stock and custom level. Outwardly he wanted it to look stock — mechanically it was going to be warmed up and definitely Hemi-powered.
With the bare shell as the starting point, he had a local shop commence the bodywork. The fenders were converted over to accept the distinct ’Cuda louvers and a shaker hood was purchased. Mechanically, he still had the 440 six-barrel sitting around, so that was rebuilt, polished up, and sold off for a hefty profit. He took that money and had Gosselin Auto Racing in Northbridge, Massachusetts, build up a 472 Hemi for him. Pulling from the Mopar Performance catalog, they started with a bare block and stuffed it with 10.25:1 forged pistons, a forged crankshaft, forged connecting rods, and a COMP Cams hydraulic camshaft, which was all fully balanced and blueprinted. On the top end they used a set of Mopar Performance Hemi heads, and a dual plane/dual quad aluminum manifold that they crowned with a pair of Edelbrock Performer carbs. The TorqueFlite that backed the 440 was given a full rebuild and repurposed to sit behind the Hemi. The exhaust was also addressed with the installation of a set of TTI headers mated to 3-inch pipes running back to a set of MagnaFlow mufflers.
As the body neared the paint stage, he had to choose what shade would be laid down, so he opted for a combination that he was familiar with, which was the blue and white combo that originally adorned his ’68 Super Bee. With that decision in place, the body shop laid down the B5 True Blue Metallic and then capped it off with a white vinyl top. At that point, the freshly painted body was taken back to his garage where it would spend the next few years being put back together. As the rebuild gained momentum, parts were either repaired, or replaced, and eventually put back on the car. When it came time to redo the interior, the same mindset applied on the exterior also prevailed with the interior, which meant it would be done in white. Since the original interior was too far-gone, he opened up the Legendary Auto Interiors catalog for all the replacement pieces, which included door and rear panels, along with a headliner, dash pad, carpet, and reproduction leather seat upholstery. As the pieces slowly came together, he reinstalled the drive train back in the car. Bruce wanted to beef up the backend so he decided the 8 ¾ rear that came with the car would need to find a new home. The money from that sale was used to finance the purchase of a Dana he bought off of eBay as its replacement. His buddy Tom Feorene gave him a hand and they both did a full rebuilt on it with a fresh set of 3.55:1 gears and new Mopar Performance axles.
One of the things that this Barracuda was originally equipped with was air conditioning, and Bruce was keen to see some form of it reinstalled again. Since his car was now shaker equipped and you couldn’t get factory A/C when that package was ordered, he decided to install a low profile Vintage Air Gen IV kit designed for E-Bodies to keep him cool. The other aspect that he felt was crucial to the look of the car was the choice of wheels, which for him was a simple one to make. He didn’t stray far with a complete set of Factory Rallye wheel repops from Coker Tire wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/A rubber. The fronts measure 15×7 and wear 225/60R15 tires, while the rears measure 15×9 and are shod with 275/60R15 skins.
The entire build on this car, from purchase to completion, spanned roughly six years of long weekends that Bruce spent in the garage putting it back together. He never did get that Hemi convertible, but he did end up with the car that he wanted, and as the song goes, you can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need.

The bottom diagram shows how the height of the the outrigger changes the angle of the line game fishing knot as it hits the water. The height of the rod and outrigger tips on larger boats achieves a much higher angle of entry. This will compensate for any sag or belly in the line. Unfortunately, lures run off of smaller boats have more leader dragging in front of the lure. You can still troll lures from a small boat with no outriggers. You just need to select the right lures, and position them correctly to compensate for the propwash. The basic spread shown in the diagram is a good starting point. If you fish from a smaller boat, you may want to opt for longer riggers, or try mounting them on a T-top or further up on the side of the boat to achieve a better angle of entry. My favourite thing ever about LITWTC is that it sounds completely and utterly bizarre to anyone who doesn't listen to it. What do you mean that music artist I heard on TikTok has a podcast where he and his friend talk about the apocalypse.
Anyways some of my favourite bits are
Tommy Lasagna, a fully Korean man with a thick Brooklyn accent, will own a fast food combination auto repair shop, wherein he'll mix up your order and put burgers on your tires and serve you a fistful of wires instead of fires
Will getting harassed by a ghost prostitute named Mama Doo-Wop for like seven minutes
Chris and Will stopping their car (they were driving around in this episode) and laughing at a decaying house for like five minutes
Will larping as Tom Waits for an entire episode
Leopard Planet is the only band still left in the apocalypse, wherein the lead singer and rhythm guitarist and Rock God, Zap Gorgeous, will have leopard print clothes as they play on top of a leopard pyramid
Will and Chris try getting their Wendy's order and it takes 20 minutes because the Doordash driver kept circling a graveyard
Will will save Jordan Peterson from the manosphere grease pit (where any manosphere person is greased up and tossed into a pit where they have to kill everyone else to survive) and turns him into a parrot-like pet that he listens to for hours on end
Chris Dunne Won't Go To Therapy I/II
ROLL!! THEM!! BONES!!
Bobby Sugarbones dying because the recording program closed and they didn't notice because the laptop had a picture of Chester Cheetah inflation art covering it (this was because Chris was trying to get Will into the kink so they could fuck the podcast, which is a gutter clown with that kink)
"Yes! And–"
Chris and Will spending an entire episode parked in front of a school because Will's car broke down and they were waiting for the repair guy (yes there are two episodes where they're in a car)
