Astro Colt AU Pony types & stuff
Ello :) since you all seem to like the mlp astro boy au I made I thought I'd share my ideas for other characters I haven't designed yet pony types/species.
Earth ponies:
Ochanomizu (Most ppl i've seen think he should be an earth pony and I agree), Reno, Tamao, Uran, Skunk, Inspector Tawashi and Midori Niwano.
Unicorns:
Yuko, Shibugaki, Daichi(or earth pony), Delta, Daddy Walrus (Might change him to earth pony) and Hamegg.
Pegasi:
Hoshie, Kato and Katari
Alicorns [robots]:
Blue Knight(has a retractable horn that looks like his sword), Epsilon, Atlas, Atom's king of robots upgrade.
Non-ponies:
Princess Kaya (Kirin), Pluto (Centar).
#idk if i'll make ALL of these characters but these are the ideas anyway!#Uran Is an earth pony not a unicorn so she looks more like Ochan and bc she doesn't have powers like Atom#Astro colt AU#mlp au#astro boy 2003#astro boy#mlp#Most ponies in Metro city are unicorns and earth ponies#Hence the love of over-the-top transportation devices#Bem would also technically be a Pegasus just a really weird one lol#and ik Daichi's name literally means “Earth” but I think he'd work well as a unicorn too#also the little bears are replaced with parasprites :)

Okay. So while organizing my office, I came across something I’d completely forgotten about; my dream dub cast for Astro Boy 2003, if it were licensed by Funimation.
Mind you, this list was conceived in 2012 when Funimation still held a monopoly on the Anime dubbing industry, but hey, how was I supposed to know they’d screw themselves over, royally?
Anyway, here’s the list. It’s incomplete because I couldn’t figure out a voice actor for certain characters, so if anyone has any suggestion, let me know in the comments. Thanks.
Enjoy!
Astro Boy 2003 Funimation Dub Cast:
Astro/Atom - Maxey Whitehead
Dr. Ochanomizu/O’Shay -
Dr. Tenma & Shadow -
Yuko - Colleene Clickenbeard
Inspector Tawashi - Robert McCollum
Zoran/Uran - Brittney Karbowski
Kissagari/Shunsaku Ban -
Lamp/Drake -
Skunk - Steve Blum
Kato - Todd Haberkorn
Atlas - Michael Solusod
Pluto - Christopher Sabat
Blue Knight - Travis Willingham
Kennedy - Caitlin Glass
Alejo - Monica Rial
Abecrombie - Wendy Powell
Robita/Nora - Carrie Savage
Denkou - Luci Christian
Reno - Aaron Dismuke
Epsilon - Brina Palencia
Delta - J. Michael Tatum

1/24 Embracing Defeat and Astro Boy V1
Dower's article was quite honestly shocking to me. Of course famously everyone is the hero of their own story but all these gritty details of just EXACTLY how Japan was forever changed after WW2 have have frequently been so blissfully glossed over. I have experienced, THANKFULLY no war in my lifetime but hearing the sort of mixed reactions to Hirohito's message was surprising. Tears of sadness that the way of the world had "not been in Japan's favor" and tears of joy? that at least the fighting at long last was over. Over time the way in which Western democracy was said to have become this sort of beacon for Japan was also puzzling to me. The nation that had dropped atomic bombs and left 100s of thousands of people dead, injured, displaced, and orphaned. I also found the point in the article that had Japan not surrendered they wouldn't have lasted much longer in the war kind of infuriating. It made it sound as if all of this was a kind of mercy by the US- wrong in so many ways. In regard to manga more specifically, in the midst of orphaned children and panpan women, cartoonist Kato Etsuro had contributed his own support for the war effort with various illustrations about American occupation in the post war. It seemed that these kind of illustrations became a bit of a satirical way for people to cope with everything that had happened. Kasutori zasshi contributed in a similar way by making "no attempt made to enlighten or educate mentally and physically exhausted" readers but rather just to "provide a moment of pleasure".
______________________________________________________________
As the first REAL manga I've seriously read,Astro boy immediately reminded me of Captain America, especially the part where he becomes frozen. What he really strikes me to be as a character is a sort of symbol of an improved future. From tragedy could come improvement. It is kinda sweet to think that the father loved his son so much he wanted to bring him back (until he gets angry at his creation for not being the real thing of course). The kind of futurist element to this manga I found quite humorous as we still have no flying cars or humanoid robots mingling with society quite yet but we did have a moon landing and the increasing frequency of robots replacing humans in certain automation aspects has come to fruition as well. Being that Astro has the form of a young child who attends school and shows loyalty to his teacher, he also seems to be a positive role model for children.

Dower and Astroboy Blog Post
Dower’s Embracing Defeat exposed the reality of Japan upon its defeat in the war and thereafter. In the first part of the reading, we learn the devastating effects of what the war did, during and after, on Japan’s soldiers, families of soldiers, war victims, and POWs. A bit shamefully, I was reluctant in the beginning to feel sorry for Japan given their war crimes, but when it comes to the actual people of Japan who painfully suffered from the several effects war could have, I was left empathic and sorrowful. Reading about the displaced persons, unrepatriated soldiers, starving families, homeless adults and children, countless deaths, and destroyed cities was heartbreaking.
It was also interesting to read about to see how some people coped with the end of the war, with some not even coping, but celebrating. This was a long read so I might be remembering incorrectly, but it seemed like popular thought of a political switch to democracy and a newfound freedom through the victors of the war was incoming. For example, Kato Etsuro seemed to hate the Allied Powers, making cartoons and posters negatively depicting them. But postwar, he created cartoons that celebrated them and democracy. As Dower said, “Kato’s beastly enemy had been transformed, almost overnight, into liberators -- the agents of a revolution from above.” The Cultures of Defeat was also an intriguing chapter, seeing how the people of Japan transitioned from life in this authoritarian society to a more explorative, new culture. I was stunned to read about the R.A.A (Recreation and Amusement Association). I just found it ironic and melancholic that in order to protect women from potential sexual assault and harassment, they created women “martyrs” who would take the hit of sexual assault.
Other than this, I really enjoyed reading Astro-Boy! I thought it was fun read. I was able to link Dower’s article and this manga immediately through the emphasis and fanatics of science in it. Dower discussed the fixation Japan had on progressing the inclination of science, as a wide opinion was that the Allied Power’s victory was attributed to their advancement in the fields of science and technology. Astro boy made several comments about Japan being a science-based society, which is what Japan strived to be postwar.
