these are not words said unkindly.   winston bears the knowledge firm in mind as he brings the cup of tea to his lips,  the morning sun not quite enough to warm his hands in a satisfactory manner.  not the penthouse's fault,  really,  he has always run rather cold.  unlike charon,  but that thought is neither here nor there,  merely something he knows to be true about the man.

getting to know winston is an incredibly hard task.  he has to be cracked open like a safe and even then he might not grant access,  stubborn even in defeat.  one needs time and an ungodly amount of patience to learn the code.  the man now quietly sitting in front of him,  already honed to perfection but not into his role for the day yet,  knows the password by heart.  not everything,  of course not,  but he knows more than most.  he probably knows more than anyone else will ever know.

these are words said with understanding.  that some doors will stay barred to him.  that there is no use in trying to pry them open,  unless winston himself unlocks them willingly.  from his lips,  this is not a reprimand at all,  rather a reminder that he knows this about him,  too,  and that he will accept not knowing more than he has to,  but not less than he deserves.

" ah.  but you know my mother's name.  ''   what might be mistaken for a simple statement,  utterly casual,  holds the weight of a shared life:  my mother knows you by name as well.  you have made her dinner,  as i am sure you recall.  she asks after you every time i speak to her. 

there is no need to say this out loud.  charon's expression softens around a smile,  some degrees warmer than his usual,  ever polite,  one.  he says goodbye without speaking   (   because it always means see you later   ),  touching three fingers to the back of his,  much colder,  hand.

SUMMARY

i. (mid 30s, they/them) an adjudicator is an agent of order, directly upholding the high table's rules and tasked with punishing those who step out of line. sent only for cases of misconduct of the highest order, requiring immediate action. prefers the job to be neat, clean; never to be the one holding the weapon, when one is needed. the adjudicator pronounces the sentence, carrying the high table's voice, letting other people dirty their hands.

ii. 170 cm, slim build. favours dark and elegant clothing. pale skin, blue eyes and hair kept short, often buzzed. notable in their appearance: both ears have been pierced several times, but they usually only wear an earring each side when working. FC: emma d'arcy.

iii. in the criminal underworld they are known only as 'the adjudicator'. erin is an alias they currently use for their civic identity, posing as a lawyer from ithaca (new york).

notes. they aren't a villain, albeit their role might be viewed as antagonistic from the movie's perspective. they are not unreasonable, or cruel. they don't take pleasure in acts of violence.

SUMMARY

i. 29, manuel is working hard to help support his mother and his younger sister. he used to steal for some local low tier crime boss, but clawed out of that life when the man tried to have him kill someone. he refused, the man got angry and manuel fired a gun for the first time in his life: he missed the mark, but left the criminal scarred and bleeding on the ground. he found protection inside the continental, and got rewarded for his dubious skills with a job offer as a dishwasher (now kitchen porter and occasional bartender).

ii. 5'10 (178 cm). the only workout he has ever known has been running like hell to avoid cops, so he has no muscle to speak of. knows just enough about combat to know where to place his thumb so it won't break while throwing a punch. but he remembers very well how to pick locks as well as pockets. SUMMARY

i. 32 years old nonbinary hitman (they / them). originally from san juan, paz was raised in a catholic orphanage that doubled as a training ground for assassins. kills people for a living, but without the typical broody assassin act. paz is led, first and foremost, by their desire to enjoy life and experience love in all its forms. panromantic / pansexual, polyamorous.

ii. 5'6 (168 cm), slender and athletic build with most muscle strenght concentrated in the torso, shoulders and back. they rely mostly on agility and speed, not on brute force. dark and curly hair, sometimes shaved at the sides. notable in their appearance: a colorful tattoo of a phoenix on their back, a small puerto rican tody surrounded by flowers on the back of their right hand / small circular burn scars on both their arms. SUMMARY

i. born in new york, frankie (full name is francis, but he won't introduce himself as such ever) is the eldest son of francis scott and moira calhoun and you guessed it, winston's older brother. while not an oc, his ties to canon are very basic and my portrayal is based entirely on an alternative version of events where he survives his attempt to steal from cormac. he has left the city and its criminal underworld well behind him and has taken to live in the countryside, tending to his animals and a small farm. biromantic homosexual. formerly: street kid, soldier, drug addict, hitman.

ii. frankie is tall (6'3) and broad shouldered. his frame is not massive, especially when it comes to his waist, but he has strong arms and back muscles that suit his current farm work rather well. his skin is almost always golden from working in the sun so often. hair slightly curly and dark, blue eyes. FC: aaron taylor johnson, andrew lincoln.

iii. easy-going and well versed in casual conversations, but reserved about his past. fluent enough in vietnamise. his pronunciation isn't perfect although he can carry a conversation and understand what is being said. he otherwise speaks english with a distinct american accent.

iv. frankie and his brother aren't the closest, while simultaneously not being estranged. they hear from each other, from time to time, but neither worry if months or sometimes years go by.

v. he still owns a few weapons, kept only for defense. he used to be known for his uncanny proficiency with most firearms, when he still worked for cormac o'connor (the continental's previous manager).

notes. (i) most people don't know him and winston are brothers. your muse probably won't know, unless plotted otherwise. (ii) not john's father, either. (iii) my version of frankie and yen's relationship is strictly platonic.

INTERACTIONS IDEAS,

chance encounter somewhere in rural america. after leaving new york behind him (sometime around '78 / 79) frankie spent many years working all over the country, helping farmers and living day to day, season to season. he also worked as a mechanic from time to time and generally just ended up being a handy man for the communities he found himself in.

specific kind of help (closer to the movies' timeline). frankie has made it out a long time ago, burying the hitman life for good. he probably can help others do the same, or at least provide whatever assistance he can in the matter.

SUMMARY.

i. manhattan born, but you would hardly suspect it from hearing him talk. he has spent twenty years of his life in the uk and it reflects in the way he speaks (the accent, notably, the phrasing is less obvious). he could easily sound more american, if he ever bothered to.

ii. he has been the manager of the new york continental for nearly forty years, give or take. took it right out of the previous manager's grasp. cormac was little more than a tyrant that relied on fear instead of loyalty, and so he had precisely what was coming for him: a bullet to the head.

iii. winston is not a tall or imposing man, but he doesn't need to be. his position has been secure for some decades now and he has numerous allies to rely on.

iv. i use the tv show as loose inspiration. i take some details (notably: winston's poor background, him having a brother), but i make changes to better fit my vision. no knowledge of it is required.
