i made a trevelyan :3 her name is astoria!

she was made tranquil for being a massive Problem after being put in solitary confinement many times. went to the circle as a child, her discovery of magic was when she had a tantrum and accidentally killed her older brother by setting him on fire (and, thus, a good portion of the house). her family sent her to the circle and didn't really talk to her ever. she was demonized while in the circle.

when she was physically sent to the fade in the prologue, her tranquility is reversed, and she has Emotions and Thoughts and Free Will for the first time in like 15 years. she's in her early 30s. her moods tend to swing a little because she's getting used to having feelings again. she's a little unstable, but she's doing her best for mages & mage rights, and coming into her own as a person while also grappling with being a Major Political Figure

~1000 words, Nikhael Trevelyan and Ser Simon, good for all ages but warning for mage with a crush on a Templar, and a Templar that might just have a crush back

Almost there.

The shelf is high, but Nikhael is tall, all limbs and neck that seem to sprout overnight, as if someone swapped his robes for someone else’s while he slept. He can see the book he wants - The Travels of a Chantry Scholar - and he can just reach it with his fingertips.

Normally, he would just climb down and push the rickety ladder in the Circle library two feet to the right, but today it’s jammed on the carpet… again.

Normally, he would just ask someone for help with the ladder, but today it’s early and there’s only one other person around.

Normally, he gets along better with the Templars than his Aunt Tori, but today there is only one Templar watching the library and Nikhael can’t ask him for help. In fact, to date, Nikhael Trevelyan has found himself unable to speak a single word to Ser Simon.

Ser Simon who is standing watch at the door, just out of sight. Ser Simon with the warm, round Starkhaven accent and the darkest eyes that Nikhael has ever seen. Ser Simon sings to himself when he’s on patrol and he thinks no one else is around, and he likes a lot of sugar in his tea, and there are a dozen other small things that Nikhael knows about him that he probably shouldn’t, but sometimes the other Templars tease him where someone might hear, and Nikhael has always been a listener.

They are all alone together in the library and that makes today anything but normal. It’s both the best and worst possible way to think of it, and it leaves Nikhael smiling to himself, even as his stomach twists at the idea of being alone  anywhere with Ser Simon.

Nikhael shifts, setting one foot on the shelf to the right of the ladder. He manages to push the books apart so that he can just catch the binding of his prize. Furrowing his brows and pulling, little bit by little bit, he fiddles until the back end of the book is hanging over the edge. All he wanted to do this morning was to curl up in one of the window seats in the library and read until Aunt Tori comes to find him to practice, and every second spent doing this is a second less with the book, but now he’s close.

He’s so caught up in his efforts with the book that he doesn’t hear the soft singing and the scrape of armor until it’s too late.

“Do you need help, Trevelyan?”

Nikhael’s eyes go wide when he turns to look and Ser Simon is staring up at him with those same dark eyes and stubble that he ought to shave before the Knight-Commander sees him.

He shakes his head, more frantic than necessary for the situation, enough to match his racing heart at the sight of Ser Simon watching him. “N-No! No, I’m--”

Gravity wins out on the book first, then on Nikhael. The book falls in a simple arc, landing on its spine and opening to show a neatly drawn map. Nikhael falls with far less grace and more twirling arms and shouting when his foot slides off the bookshelf and he topples to the floor.

Or almost to the floor.

By some minor miracle he lands on his feet, but as the Maker works in awful and embarrassing ways sometimes, that minor miracle is Ser Simon catching him around the waist and breaking his fall. They each take a step in the momentum of it, Ser Simon moving back and Nikhael all but crashing into his breastplate.

“Your eyes really are that blue.”

“I’m so sorry!” Nikhael blurts out at the same second as Ser Simon makes his hushed observation. “I-- What?”

Ser Simon’s hands are still on his waist, and he’s staring back at Nikhael with wide eyes, his mouth slightly open. It looks an awful lot like the expression Nikhael is almost sure he’s wearing where he’s leaned against warm armor, one arm slung over Ser Simon’s shoulder.

“I was never sure if they were blue or violet,” Ser Simon mutters. His eyes flick down to Nikhael’s lips, then back up again. The tiny pink tip of his tongue darts out over his lower lip, and Nikhael goes hot-cold-hot at the sight of it, at the slow motion sweep of lashes as Ser Simon blinks.

“I have to go.” The sides of Nikhael’s waist are cool and too light when Ser Simon steps away, holding his hands up in front of him. “You got your book, you’re--” Ser Simon’s eyes flick down, then up again, taking in all of Nikhael this time. “I have to go,” he repeats, and Nikhael stands perfectly still, understanding and yet not, as Ser Simon turns and hurries out of the library.

Nikhael bends and collects the book from the floor. He hears a whispered conversation as the guard is changed, and his face burns up to his ears at the thought that he startled Ser Simon so much that he left. He probably stamped on the poor man’s foot and didn’t even notice. 

When he looks out around the corner of the bookshelf, Ser Melisant is there instead, with her crooked nose and cold grey eyes. She frowns at Nikhael when she sees him, shaking her head as if she knows how clumsy he’s been, and he hurries past her to the window seat with the best view, heat still on his cheeks. That’s not new; he spends a lot of time blushing and ducking his head and hiding from Templars.

He spends no more time with that now, however. Nor does he spend much time admiring the sky or the trees, or reading his book. Instead he brushes his fingers along his lower lip and cheekbone. Ser Simon noticed his eyes, has been thinking about what color they are. The thought fills him with butterflies, that someone so handsome would care about his eyes, or anything to do with him.

He wraps an arm around his body, setting his hand over the place where Ser Simon’s hand had rested, and groans inwardly. Aunt Tori is going to kill him when she finds out.

Technically I could probably say Sarenan is Ghilanel 1.0 because you can see a LOT of Ghil’s face in her, but Ghilanel is also where I first learned how to actually import a world state; Sarenan’s is the default, so I nearly abandoned her playthrough but now I have some fun character ideas for so we’ll see how far she gets!  For her part, Ghilanel really hasn’t changed much from her initial creation, which is why she’s not on here.

HEADCANON PROMPTS ( ACCEPTING )

- heartbreak doesn’t often happen to astoria? she’s very good at detaching herself from messy emotional situations, and so when things start to look like they’re going south, she typically separates herself from any real emotional connection.

- part of this is that she’s experienced a lot in terms of trauma? and one of the things that happens when you’ve been traumatized like that, particularly when you’re young, is that you develop as a defense mechanism an ability to shut down the part of you that gets really attached to things. it’s bitter and disappointing, but it doesn’t break you the way it might otherwise.

- part of this, too, is just astoria’s personality: she’s clever, and cunning, and she’s very good at keeping a measure of control over herself. everything is a performance for astoria, and so there’s always a level of detachment.

- the verse where she’s really defined by her heartbreak, and where she really can’t remove it, is the verse where she lies to @ofexaltations‘ shaw and hides until after the battle at denerim that she asked riordan to join her. because of that lie – her continuation of the lie especially – there really isn’t much he can do with her; he can’t rely on her, he can’t trust her, and he’s understandably angry. so when it comes time for the wardens to leave, he sends her to orlais – she was joined by an orlesian warden. she’s an orlesian warden.

- astoria serves her time in the wardens, then, under clarel, and for the first six or seven years she’s in the emprise du lion. she’s separated from her home – she can’t go back to antiva, and because she did this with no warning, the succession in seleny is thrown into question. her grandfather is furious with her, and so is her mother; her grandfather doesn’t speak to her for years, ignores her letters, only writes back when he starts getting sick. she’s separated from her family in ferelden, too, and while she can see them occasionally, it doesn’t happen much. more than that, she’s separated from everyone in the origins crew, and the person she wants to see most wants nothing to do with her.

- the heartbreak here happens early and it lasts for a decade, at least. she knows it’s her own fault; she knows that if she’d just been honest, if she’d gotten over herself and told him the truth, none of this would have happened. so this heartbreak tends to manifest as anger: anger at shaw, first, for sending her away, then anger at riordan for not surviving; then anger at her family for not keeping i touch. finally, she settles on anger with herself, and that anger-heartbreak combination makes her really self-destructive.

- she doesn’t stay in regular touch with anyone from the origins crew besides alistair and oghren. she refuses to ask about shaw. she and leliana will occasionally encounter each other or exchange letters, and zevran comes to see her for a while after things in antiva have settled and to bring her some things from seleny, but she’s a wreck, and so friendship with her is difficult.

- she becomes close to clarel, and ends up transferred to adamant, where she and clarel become closer, and where she is, unofficially, expected to take up some of the absent constable blackwall’s duties.

- the one time she writes to shaw, it’s when she starts to hear the calling. she doesn’t expect an answer. 

- so her heartbreak manifests through this: recklessness and relative isolation. she’s close to clarel because she knows that clarel finds her more useful when she’s being reckless, because this means astoria is willing to do things that other wardens won’t. oghren doesn’t often express concern. alistair expresses concern, but he understands the dangers of being a warden, and so he won’t judge. 

- it also manifests in her spending less and less time in prayer; she doesn’t care too much for the maker these days. 

- by the time here lies the abyss rolls around, she’s connected with elissa hawke – and the both of them are pretty broken, so they make for good company. when evie trevelyan chooses elissa to remain in the fade, astoria is furious – in part for losing her friend, in part because she became a warden to die and nobody will let her die when she’s ready. the wardens are her family; she should be the one to die for them.

- going from adamant to weisshaupt is difficult mostly because she’s going with shaw, and because this requires her to start to face the fact that she’s going to live for a while yet, and it doesn’t have to be reckless, and she doesn’t have to be hurt while she’s living. this is especially true if they go looking for the cure.
