†Asteroxylon mackiei
†Asteroxylaceae (†Drepanophycales)*
Early Devonian (/Pragian) ~410 million years ago
*Extinct order of lycophytes. This species sister to all other lycophytes.
Named for its star-shaped xylem, this extinct lycopsid had G-type (annular) tracheids and enations (with stomata) along the main axis. The rhizome-like structure had no enations, and had root-like branches. Branching was somewhat overtopping (anisotomous) to isotomous. Asteroxylaceae, unlike the Drepanophycaceae, had enations with no trace (vasculature).
