arachne, the weaver who became a spider (asteroid 407)

Arachne was the daughter of Idmon (some versions say she was just the daughter of a shepherd). Idmon was a skilled cloth dyer, thus Arachne grew up around cloth, thread, needles, yarn, etc. Arachne became a rather skilled weaver as a product of this environment. She became so sure of her skill that she challenged Athena, the goddess of wisdom, yes, but also crafting (in some versions Athena challenge's Arachne after hearing the young weaver boast about how she is the best weaver there is and suggesting that gods didn't help her at all). The goddess accepted this challenge and the two had a tapestry competition. Athena made a tapestry of the glories of the gods in Olympus, while Arachne made one that showed the gods in amorous states - showing all their affairs and abuse of power. Athena destroyed Arachne's tapestry either because of its perfection or out of offense. Arachne lost all confidence and felt ashamed for her work, no one would buy her pieces after this occurrence - out of this despair, she hanged herself. Athena too felt bad for having caused Arachne such melancholy, so out of pity, she loosened Arachne's noose. The fibers of the rope became so thin and fragile that it became something like spider silk. Athena's magic didn't stop at the rope as she had planned either because Arachne herself transformed into a humanoid-spider-like creature (in some versions, Hecate's poison is used and Arachne becomes the first spider). IN MY OPINION Arachne in your chart can represent a) artistic skills, b) where you may appear cocky in you challenging, c) atheism, d) where others may think you are insensitive, e) where others destroy your work and reputation, f) where your ego can be dangerously fragile (a risk for suicide), g) where divine intervention is involved in your life, and/or h) where you transform.

i encourage you to look into the aspects of arachne along with the sign, degree, and house placement. for the more advanced astrologers, take a look at the persona chart of arachne AND/OR add the other characters involved to see how they support or impede arachne!
