Jamie Johnson Season 5 Episode 8 “Outside the Box” Not-a-Review Review
Spoilers ahead:
I know, I know, I don’t normally do reviews. Or I guess review type things. For the 1 episode I’ve been around for this blog. But this episode was just too good. I’ve been touting this episode as historic before I even saw it, and I’ve got to say: I was 100% on the money. I had huge expectations for the episode and they were still surpassed.
Let’s start with the obvious: today this show wasn’t “Jamie Johnson” This was “Dillon simmonds”. There were no side plots. Everything revolved around Dillon’s journey. I’m sure some people would have preferred more football, but I was ecstatic. Originally, I was worried, it would mean the last episode that focused on Dillon, but after that cliffhanger (yes, I’m calling it a cliffhanger, I know what Shaun duggan said, but that was definitely a cliffhanger. But if any CBBC producers are lurking, that definitely wasn’t a cliffhanger, pls don’t cancel Jamie johnson)
Jamie’s cameo was great too. Patrick said he did his research and you can tell. You could feel Dillon’s pain in that scene with Jamie. He really wanted to tell him, but he just wasn’t ready. And same with his scene with his dad. Struggling with whether or not to say, and in the end, it just comes out. (Pun intended)
And you can tell Patrick is so happy and proud to be part of such an important storyline. He doesn’t seem too active on social media, but he always makes the effort to post on his story for the important episodes like today. And like I mentioned earlier, he’s been subtly showing his support for a month now. And in the MOTDMag interview, he said this was his favourite episode, probably because he took centre stage. Nah, hes good people and he seems like a really good ally to LGBT people.
And speaking of awesome people, let’s not forget @jonnie-kimmins , aka boggy “the bogster” bogson: always there to roast homophobes in the Instagram comments section 👌
And of course, Shaun duggan, for writing such an amazing episode (I assume he wrote it, sorry if it’s someone else) and delving into serious topics (bad seague time)
I have never seen an episode of TV where someone who’s gay got kicked out of the house. You’ve got homophobic parents, yeah. Like with ackley bridge and the fosters. But the parents always seem to come round in time to not disown them. But Jamie Johnson, they went the extra mile. They destroyed Dillon. It was heartbreaking, but important. If they can show that even someone who was hurt as much as Dillon can get back up, that he can still succeed, then people can believe that they can. It gives hope.
You don’t get hope from seeing love Simon. Not really. Not if you live with homophobic parents. Simon’s too unrelateable, but Dillon is relatable. Hell, it even gave me hope. I had half a mind to come out to my brother before I remembered it was too soon for me to get kicked out of the house and I needed to have a plan first.
On Elliot: I don’t think he did the right thing telling ruby Dillon was gay. I also don’t necessarily think he did the... wrong thing? He knew that it was hurting Dillon to have ruby hate him. I can’t remember if he got the call from his mum before or after he told ruby, but I imagine he realised that if Elliot was gone, Dillon needed someone in his corner. It’s not right, but Elliot probably felt like he had no option.
And oh my god, the scene of delliot getting ready was adorable. It was obvious Dillon had a crush on Elliot, but I didn’t think it was mutual until then. And “call me when you’re ready”. You can tell what he meant. “Call me when you’re ready to date. It’s so sweet how they both kind of know they like each other, but are still too shy to say it. I love it.
Also, Dillon saying he’d probably beat up his crush. We all thought he was crushing on Jamie, but it turns out he was crushing on some random guys from series 1 episode 1 😛
And onto Liam, the stupidest person in all of history. He wanted to hurt Dillon, yeah, but he didn’t expect their dad to actually hate Dillon, or to disown him. To him, it was just their usual competitiveness. Up to now, I don’t think he realised that his actions had real consequences. Yes, there was the homophobic incident with alba, but his dad blamed the club, not Liam, and most likely instilled in Liam that it wasn’t liam’s fault.
And remember that liam’s dad encourages them to play dirty. He lives in a bubble where he thinks can do whatever he wants.
And it’s only now he’s started to realise that he’s kind of not a very good person. It’s like he told Eric. You can tell that in his conversation with Eric. Liam thinks he himself is evil. So, let’s go through the characters who are going through some serious stuff right now:
1) Jamie, who’s currently really struggling due to the lack of football. He’s gotten addicted to fifa because he needs to be good at something
2) Boggy, who’s been pretty much a punching bag for Jamie. It’s extremely likely that he’s going to start struggling with how people treat him
3) Dillon. Does it need mentioning what stuff he’s going through?
4) Liam, who at the moment hates himself and thinks he’s evil
Ok, I’m really worried. I’ve heard people say before 13 reasons why season 4 that they don’t see how anyone’s gonna have a happy ending, and here, I’m really worried they’re just gonna torture all the characters. But I look forward to it.
Also, I’m really hoping that they bring back in the Hawkstone reputation arc, and Dillon comes out to jamie, and Jamie gets super pissed at Dillon’s dad and goes super saiyan and gets into a fight with him (maybe not the super saiyan part though). Jamie refuses to tell Hawkstone why, even though Dillon offers to come out for him, but Jamie won’t let him, and the end of the season sees Jamie without a club.
I don’t know whether this is a review or just me praising the episode. I guess if I had to give it a proper review, 10/10. I promise that’s probably got a lot of bias in it. I ain’t a reviewer. But this really was an amazing episode. I’m so proud of CBBC.

5 times someone thought Perry and JD had a thing, + 1 time they were right? (I love the idea of them having a lot of inside jokes even before they're together, and ofc they have their own shorthand that other people find confusing :D) thank you for answering all my asks, jdox is new for me and I totally love them :)
THANK YOU for 1) this prompt and 2) for being so patient!! I really loved this and wanted to do it justice, but my brain wouldn’t cooperate until now! So have 5 instances from s3 through s5 where people thought JDox were a thing and 1 time in s6 that they were finally right :)
Five Times SomeoneThought JD & Perry Were a Thing and One Time They Were Right
“Newbie!” Perry called fromacross the ICU bay, not bothering to look up to see where JD was. “Little help here!” His patient was coding and despite the flurryof nurses at his side and several other doctors nearby, there was only oneperson he trusted to help him.
Instantly,JD dropped his chart on the counter of the nurses’ station and hurried over toPerry’s patient. He took Perry’sdirection without a second thought, his practiced hands easily intubating thepatient while Perry called for a crash cart.
When allwas said and done and the patient was stabilized, JD stood next to Perry at thefoot of the bed while he notated the chart. “That was some good work there, Newbie,” Perry said gruffly, not liftinghis head to look at JD.
JD couldn’tcompletely keep the smile off his face, both from the satisfaction of savingsomeone’s life and from Perry’s praise. It wasn’t often that he received it, but he savored it when he did.
A fewhours later, Perry was rounding a corridor when he overheard two of that year’sinterns discussing his and JD’s save earlier.
“What doyou mean they’re not together?” the shorter one asked.
“There’sno way Dr. Dorian would be with someone like Cox,” the other disagreed. “He’s way too nice!”
“But yousaw the way they ran that code. Theyknew what the other was doing without even having to say it out loud.”
“Thatdoesn’t mean they’re dating. They’ve just worked together for three years.”
Perryforced himself to shake off the moment, doing his best to scrub it from hismemory.
“Youguys, I’m really worried about Perry,” JD confessed over lunch with Turk,Carla, and Elliot. “He hasn’t left thehospital in forty-eight hours. Jordanhad to call me to make sure he’llshow up at Ben’s funeral tomorrow.”
“You knowhow he is,” Carla said dismissively. “Hehas to deal with things his own way, but he’s strong. He’ll get through it.”
“Besides, shouldn’t you be pissed at him?” Turk interjected. “He tried to tell you it was your fault.”
JD shookhis head. “I know he didn’t meanit. It still hurt, don’t get me wrong, but I know that I did everything I could for Ben. And Perry lashes out – that’s what hedoes. But that doesn’t mean I’m notworried about him.”
“SometimesI think you’re a little too forgiving when it comes to Dr. Cox,” Elliotmuttered under her breath.
“What isthat supposed to mean?” JD asked, his brows furrowing.
“All I’msaying is that you spend way too much time worrying about what he thinks of youwhen he just treats you like crap.”
JD’s jawtightened almost imperceptibly. “Well, I’msorry you think that. He’s my attendingand he’s taught me a lot, Elliot. I’mnot just going to abandon him when he needs me – I mean someone – most.”
Turklaughed into his food, quickly trying to disguise it as a cough, but JD wasn’tfooled.
“His bestfriend just died!” JD said, his voice rising. “You guys are being ridiculous.” He pushed himself away from the table and walked out of the cafeteria.
“Way tobe subtle, you two,” Carla scolded, eyeing them both with reproach.
“Oh, comeon, Carla. If I didn’t know better, I’dsay JD had a crush on the guy,” Elliot snorted. “Can you imagine, the two of them?”
Turkshuddered. “I think I might throw up,”he groaned. “Don’t even joke like that.”
Carlarolled her eyes. “You might try beingsupportive, Turk,” she sighed.
“Baby, please. If JD likes Dr. Cox, hell will freeze over.”
Carlagave up trying to talk sense into Turk and Elliot, but she had a sneakingsuspicion that JD and Perry were already much closer than everyone thought – orthat they were about to be.
When JDcame back home from Ohio, the last thing he expected was to find Perry coveringall his shifts and then showing up at his apartment just to hug him. But he had stayed wrapped up in Perry's armsfor several minutes – or at least that was what it had felt like. He hadn’t actually thought to time it sinceit was so unexpected, but it made him feel much better. He didn’t feel quite normal yet, and he wasntsure he ever would after losing his father, but knowing that Perry really didcare about him did wonders.
“Say,little brother,” Dan said later that night after Perry had gone home, “when didyou and Coxie become a thing?”
“A thing?”JD repeated, a little confused. “What doyou mean? He’s always been my mentor, right from my first day.”
“Not yourmentor,” Dan said, slurring his words some. “Aren’t you two doing it?”
JD’s eyeswidened. “No, Dan, we are not doing it,” he gaped. “Why would you think that?”
“Well, s’obvioushe cares about you,” Dan said with a shrug. “Just assumed from the way you acted tonight. He showed up and you seemed… I dunno… better.”
“You’redrunk,” JD muttered, shaking off Dan’s comment and doing his best not to readmore into it.
“I can’tbelieve we’re gonna have to deal with this joker,” Perry muttered, glaringthrough the windows of Mrs. Wilk’s room as Lester Hedrick, the hospital’s griefcounselor, approached. He stood besideJD, close enough that they were touching.
Before JDcould reply, Hedrick opened the door and greeted Mrs. Wilk. “And Dr. Cox, Dr. Dorian, pleasure as always,”he said in a patronizing tone.
“Is it?”Perry muttered, quiet enough that Hedrick couldn’t hear.
“Patricia,I’m sure your doctors have done a thorough job of explaining to you what theprocess of dying will be like, but do you have any questions for me?” Hedrickasked Mrs. Wilk.
She shookher head, making it obvious how weak she had become. “No, I’ve been very lucky to have Dr. Dorianand Dr. Cox here with me. All my looseends are tied up.”
Hedricklooked back at the two of them, still standing side-by-side, Perry with hisarms crossed in front of his chest. “Ihadn’t heard about you two, by the way,” he said with a nod, “butcongratulations.”
“Congratulationsfor what?” Perry growled.
Hedricklifted his eyebrows, his eyes darting between Perry and JD, drawing attentionto their close proximity. “My mistake,”he said after a pause. “Never mind.”
JDswallowed hard, knowing exactly what Hedrick had presumed. He and Perry had been working alongside eachother much more often since he’d become an attending, working more as equalsrather than teacher and student. It wasa dynamic shift, and JD felt certain that Hedrick wasn’t the only one who hadnoticed.
“Kim,will you go on a date with me?” JD asked, feeling rather bold.
Kimlooked taken aback, much to JD’s surprise – he’d thought she had been feeling the moment, too, but it lookedlike he might have judged it wrong. “I –what?”
“I askedyou out,” JD said lamely. “You don’thave to say yes if you don’t want to, though.”
“I’msorry, it’s not that,” Kim said slowly. “Ijust assumed that you and Perry were together.”
“Youwhat?” JD asked incredulously. “You’rejoking.”
Kim shookher head. “I’m not the only one who thinksthat, JD,” she said with a small laugh. “Areyou telling me that you aren’t together?”
“No! Yes!” JD cried. “Yes, I’m telling you that no, we’re not together.”
“But youjust seem so… in-sync with each other. And you have this weird shorthand that no one understands and you workso well together. I guess I just assumed.”
“We’veworked together for a long time,” JD mumbled, then he sighed. “How bad is it that I wish you were right?”
Kimsmiled softly. “JD, you’re a great guy, seriously. Anyone would be lucky to haveyou. If Perry can’t see that, well, he’smissing out.”
JDblushed and quickly tried to hide it. “Thanks. Sorry I asked you out.”
Kimpatted JD on the shoulder. “Maybe he’llcome around,” she offered. “You neverknow.”
“This isthe most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen,” Perry sighed, taking a sip of hisbeer.
JDgrinned, watching Keith propose to Elliot in the exact way she wanted. “It is,” he agreed, “but she’s happy and he’sgood to her. That’s all that really matters.”
“Isuppose you’re right,” Perry said with a shrug, watching as the rest of thecrowd cheered when Keith slid the ring on Elliot’s finger. “None of this really means anything unlessyou’re happy.”
JD lookedover at Perry, finding him staring straight ahead. “Are you happy?” he asked curiously, notexpecting to get a real answer.
Instead,Perry turned to face JD, seeming to debate for a long moment. He wrapped an arm around JD’s shoulders andpulled him close, kissing him long and hard. When they finally broke apart, everyone around them was frozen andstaring at them. “Thrilled,” Perrybreathed, a smirk on his face.
“Yeah,”JD said breathlessly, clinging to the front of Perry’s shirt and gazing up athim with heavily lidded eyes. “Metoo. Took you long enough.”
Perryarched an eyebrow. “Is that so?” hecountered, but he didn’t receive an answer since JD eagerly pulled him intoanother long kiss.
“I knew it!” Carla hissed when she spottedthem in the crowd, the two of them in their own little world as everyone aroundthem celebrated Elliot and Keith’s engagement.

Ghislaine Maxwell: Co-Conspirator or Victim?
There are a few things in this world that gross me out to my very core:
- Children eating ice cream. Just no. More gets on their face than in their mouths and it activates my gag reflex and I must look away in horror. And someone get the hose because I am not touching any of it come clean up time.
- Feet. There are no words
- Bestial older men who terrorize young women and under-age girls with sex and those who help them engage in lascivious behavior. Should this not be something that disgusts everyone?
My zodiac sign pegs me as more of a leader than a follower. I find this laughable, but some around me might argue that I am capable of taking the reigns, but not always the best at adhering to authority exerted by others. If I am challenging you for your position, it’s because you’re either a bully or a fucking senseless shitbag and I don’t want those around you subjected to your vast lack of insight. Because in reality, I am super happy to follow intelligent, respectful human beings and even behave myself. It means I can just smile and nod and day dream – my favorite pastime.
If you are not familiar with the name Ghislaine Maxwell, I still hope you cringe at the name Jeffery Epstein. Convicted sex offender and all-around sack of malevolent slime. Also, a coward. Also, unfortunately dead (either by his own hand *I don’t believe it* or snuffed out by some frightened people of great power *I believe this*) before he was able to be made someone’s bitch in prison. Such a tragedy when sex offenders / sex traffickers don’t live long enough in prison to be passed around and used like a cum dumpster. Sometimes the punishment SHOULD fit the crime.
There is plenty of information out there about Ghislaine Maxwell. Here are a few key points on her:
- Her father was Robert Maxwell. He was a British media proprietor, a former member of Parliament (MP), a suspected spy, and a fraudster (having misappropriated the pension funds of his employees). Just to give you a good idea of who Robert Maxwell was: he was the inspiration for the villainous media baron Elliot Carver in the 1997 James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies. I. Am. Jealous!
- Her father died in November 1991. He had boarded his 190-foot yacht, aptly name, Lady Ghislaine and found the next morning naked, spread-eagled and afloat in the Atlantic. Two autopsies could not conclusively prove a cause of death, but most say suicide because he was set to answer questions surrounding his corporation’s billion-pound debt load that was distributed among at least nine different international banks and investment firms, and the massive hole in its pension reserves. In simpler terms – he was fucked
- Robert Maxwell left his family in ruins. Ghislaine, his favorite child whom he groomed in his image from a young age, was understandably crushed
- Ghislaine is best known for being a socialite with immense connections among the international elite. It’s been stated that she was quite personable, a little bit quirky and therefore often a standout at parties; with many people being drawn to her. (Side note: I recently watched the HBO documentary on her titled, ‘Epstein’s Shadow’ and the tagline under ALL of the people they interviewed who knew her on a social level read, “former friend of Ghislaine Maxwell”. This just made me laugh. I’ve tried to envision the conversation where these people demanded that FORMER be included. Yes, quickly distance yourself from the stink less they think you too might smell bad)
- Depending on who you listen to, Ghislaine met Epstein in either the late 1980’s when her father introduced them (how apropos) or in the late 1990’s at a party in New York following a difficult breakup with a Count. I wonder what breaking up with a Count looks like, feels like. A Count is a historical title of nobility in certain European countries, generally of average rank in the hierarchy of nobility. So basically, he’s not THAT special. But probably feels he is because, well, he has a title. Just imagine the insult you could hurl at him during the break-up: “Count von Count has a bigger penis than you!” *If you do not know who that is – just leave now because you’re shameful*.
- Epstein and Maxwell started out as a couple, but that morphed into more of a companionship / friendship / let’s rape young girls together type situation. You know, how most connections organically evolve.
- Ghislaine Maxwell has been accused of befriending minors and attempting to build a relationship with them, then later delivering them to Jeffrey Epstein to abuse. Maxwell would allegedly lure the young girls to Epstein’s residence under the guise of paid massage work. She’d target disadvantaged minors who she thought wouldn’t be able to refuse the money. Maxwell & Epstein allegedly lured slightly older women into their gross lives with the promise to assist in their careers.
- Additionally, Maxwell and Epstein have been accused of trafficking some of these girls out to their friends and associates among their extremely elite circle. Most notably, is Prince Andrew. Investigators have identified as many as 36 girls that were victims of Epstein and Maxwell’s sex trafficking ring. Some of them - as young as 14. It’s believed there are many more victims yet to be identified.
- Following Epstein’s arrest in July 2019, the FBI started looking for Ghislaine. She went into hiding. Eleven months after Epstein’s “suicide” in prison on August 10, 2019, Maxwell was located. She was arrested in New Hampshire, where she was living a life of seclusion on a sprawling ranch.
- Ghislaine Maxwell faces federal charges including transporting a minor for the purposes of criminal sexual activity, and conspiring to entice minors to travel and engage in illegal sex acts. She is awaiting trial in a Manhattan jail. A trial that was to begin July 12, 2021 but has been delayed till the fall at the request of Maxwell.
You now know all you need to know about Ghislaine Maxwell for the purposes of finishing this piece.
The HBO documentary poised a question and instead of answering it, they’ve pretty much left this viewer with repetitive thoughts and disrupted sleep while trying to answer that very question… ‘Ghislaine Maxwell, Co-Conspirator or Victim?’.
Victim: a person who suffers from a destructive or injurious action or agency / a person who is deceived or cheated, as by his or her own emotions or ignorance, by the dishonesty of others, or by some impersonal agency
My first thought when this question came up: “Wow HBO, if I was a victim of Epstein’s depravity, I’d be so pissed at you right now. Daring to group in the woman accused (several times over) of basically being a fancy pimp and securing playthings for her rich, giant-faced brute and his pals, with the young women whose lives and brain chemistry (yes, I said that: see TRAUMA) have been forever altered by Epstein’s fuckery… BOLD”.
But that thought took me to this thought: “Ghislaine was a Daddy’s girl. And as we know, her dad was a fiend. It is repeated many times in print, that Robert Maxwell conditioned his daughter and corrupted her character. In some twisted way, there might be a case in which she is in fact, a victim. A victim of a severe patriarchal environment that started at a young age and was instrumental in forming her concepts of success, decency and love (given and received)”.
My mind then went straight to this:
She was raised by a plump, rotten human being and most likely, wanted to please her dad… as most daughters often do, and perhaps never thought to question anything. How many of us are guilty of that?
Robert Maxwell passes (Ghislaine has maintained that he was murdered, but with no evidence to support her claims) and the now lost, without a compass Ghislaine, finds her way to Jeffery Epstein.
I think there is something to be said for what and who we attract into our lives. And for what and who we allow to stay in our lives. I’m just going to assume that the majority of people in this world do not willingly desire to attract destructive, soul sucking wankers into their lives, but have had to expunge a number of them from their existence. Full vision doesn’t always mean you are not blind. Love can be murky and really fuck up those rose-coloured glasses.
Co-Conspirator: A co-conspirator is a fellow conspirator - someone engaged in a secret plan by multiple people to do something evil or illegal
By this definition, Ghislaine Maxwell should be spending a great deal of the rest of her life in prison.
She saw bad stuff. She blinded herself to bad stuff. She facilitated bad stuff. She became the bad stuff.
If I was the prosecuting attorney, I might end with those four sentences. But make it all dramatic… throw in a brief pause after each one… maybe do the Bill Clinton “I did not have sexual relations with that woman” thumb gesture:
On second thought, considering how intertwined he could be in all of this… I’d most likely just use the classier karate chop into the open palm to bring my points home:
(Side Note: if you really hate your life, try a deep dive on active hand gestures and how they often provide social leverage)
So, to finally answer HBO’s question: ‘Ghislaine Maxwell, Co-Conspirator or Victim?’…
As I was told numerous times in counselling… “You are not at fault for the things that happened to you when you were young and had no control. But as an adult, you can’t let those past experiences define you and your actions. If you do, then you are responsible for the things you do now”.
Fault is past tense. Responsibility is present tense.
Ghislaine is not at fault for how she was raised or groomed, but if she lured just ONE girl/woman into Epstein’s clutches to be raped and trafficked, then she is absolutely responsible and should be held fully accountable.
She was a victim who turned into not just a co-conspirator but also a lying coward.
I believe ALL the women.
