Mosaics & Magpies - a year of Edmonton Public Art
Tumblr media
(Detail of Calder Community Mosaic by SpaceMakePlace Design (Rebecca Bayer & David Gregory - photo Doyle C. Marko)
The city of Edmonton is more vibrant thanks to a swath of public art installations over the past year. The Edmonton Arts Council public art and conservation teams were busy as they worked with artists from across Canada to place the final touches on artworks at Calder Library, ᐄᓃᐤ (ÎNÎW) River Lot 11∞ , Rossdale Linear Park, South Haven Cemetery, and Borden Natural Swimming Pool. In addition to new work, the conservation team took on more than 20 special projects, including cleaning bronze sculptures in two city parks, restoring the Norman Yates mural from the old Stanley Milner Library, and cleaning up Spectators for the Castle Downs Arena.

(Images from #YEGCanvas 2017-2018 clockwise by Elsa Robinson, Vanessa Ryl, and Kasie Campbell)
#YEGCanvas 2017/18 showcased 45 new works by local artists around the city on billboards and the LRT line.

(pehonan in the snow -artwork by Tiffany Shaw-Collinge, photo by Brad Crowfoot)
Perhaps the biggest public art news story of 2018 is the completion of ᐄᓃᐤ (ÎNÎW) River Lot 11∞ - Edmonton’s Indigenous Art Park. In development since 2013, the park was introduced to the public with a snowy opening ceremony on September 15. More than 75 people gathered at the site within Queen Elizabeth Park to celebrate the artists, artworks, and the spirit of collaboration that informed every stage of its development.
ᐄᓃᐤ (ÎNÎW) River Lot 11∞ is the result of a partnership among the City of Edmonton, Confederacy of Treaty No. 6 First Nations, Métis Nation of Alberta, and Edmonton Arts Council with substantial direction from Indigenous artists, Elders, knowledge holders, and community members. The park features contemporary works by six Canadian Indigenous artists that express “the stories of this place.”
The artists are: Amy Malbeuf (Rich Lake, Alberta), Tiffany Shaw-Collinge (Edmonton, Alberta), Duane Linklater (Moose Cree First Nation, Ontario), Jerry Whitehead (James Smith First Nation, Saskatchewan), Mary Anne Barkhouse (Nimpkish Band, Kwakiutl First Nation), and Marianne Nicolson (Dzawada'enuxw Nation). Candice Hopkins was the park curator.

In addition, some yet-to-be revealed works were installed at the Edmonton Valley Zoo and Dermott Park, while artists Sergio Serrano and Alexander Stewart will complete their artwork at Capilano Library early in the new year.
Read on for some images and descriptions and stay tuned in 2019 as new artworks are revealed!
Tumblr media
(Calder Community Mosaic - Rebecca Bayer & David Gregory, photo Doyle C. Marko)
Calder Community Mosaic fuses an ancient art form with 21st century techniques. The artwork is made from more than 7,500 triangular stained glass tiles. It measures 4.8m X 2.4m and sits in the Community Room at the Calder Library.  The mosaic is visible from the library’s forecourt and welcomes all visitors in the universal languages of colour and geometric pattern.
Tumblr media
(One of the two mosaics that make up Ripples on a Pond by William Frymire at Borden Natural Swimming Pool - photo Aspen Zettel)
The artwork Ripples on a Pond is composed of two mosaics created by William Frymire. The colourful artworks resemble small ponds and feature three native Alberta aquatic species – the Western Painted Turtle, the Leopard Frog and the dragonfly. All are interdependent species susceptible to human modification of our natural environment, and key indicators of pond health. The mosaic’s illusion of a shallow pond conveys this message in a playful and fun manner while underlining the natural filtration of the pool’s ecosystem. Realized in a postmodernist style, this mosaic is a contemporary take on an ancient art form.
Tumblr media
(mamohkamatowin (Helping One Another) by Jerry Whitehead photo by Brad Crowfoot)
Many nations, Indigenous and settler, helped shape the history of this place, amiskwaciy – “beaver house” in Cree. The theme of helping each other is inherent in mamohkamatowin, artists, artisans, and students came together to figure out the technical aspects, layer the mosaic tiles, and help bring the turtles to life. As they worked, shaping and adhering tiles, students from amiskwaciy Academy engaged with elders and knowledge holders who carry on the tradition of telling stories of this place. mamohkamatowin is a symbol of all these elements, and represents the stories of this place.
Tumblr media
(mikikwan by Duane Linklater - video still by Conor McNally)
mikikwan is a concrete reproduction of a 9,000-year-old buffalo bone hide scraper from the archives of the Royal Alberta Museum. The artist chose the bone as his source material because of the many meanings, ideas, histories, narratives, languages and cultures embedded within it. The finished sculpture will memorialize the work of Indigenous women and the relation of that labour to the land. The sculpture also pays respect to the importance of the buffalo itself to the people living in this place, the communal aspect of its use, and its destruction with the arrival of Europeans on the Plains.
Tumblr media
(Reign by Mary Anne Barkhouse - video still by Conor McNally)
From the echoes of trumpeting hadrosaurs traversing the valley floor, to being buried under a kilometre of ice, this territory has witnessed radical change over the years. It has been home to hunter and hunted alike, be it Albertosaurus and Edmontosaurus, or coyote and hare. The plants depicted have their own history as important to both body and soul. For those that have gone before, for that which has sustained and for those that have survived, Reign pays respect to the healing and adaptive nature of the land and to the original inhabitants of this territory.
Tumblr media
(iskotew by Amy Malbeuf - video still by Conor McNally)
iskotew is a sculptural representation of the word “fire” in nehiyawewin (Cree language) syllabics: ᐃᐢᑯᑌᐤ. The colours chosen are based on colours that are seen in both historical and contemporary works as to illustrate the congruencies and survival within Indigenous cultures. The vibrancy of the colours are also congruent with the vibrancy of our cultures and languages. The nehiyawewin word for woman, iskwew, is derived from the word fire, therefore; iskotew connotes the sacred abilities of women, and the often unrecognized labours of Indigenous women who contributed to creating the place now known as Edmonton.
Tumblr media
(Preparing to Cross the Sacred River by Marianne Nicolson - video still by Conor McNally)
Preparing to Cross the Sacred River references and acknowledges the natural formation of the North Saskatchewan River Valley banks, wildlife, and shared stories and traditions of Indigenous peoples. The stone slabs form a wall or “lookout” etched with images of “this place.” The artwork, which features sandblasted patterning reminiscent of beading styles, symbolizes the need to reconnect with ancient and sacred Indigenous beliefs to uphold our relationship to the land and protect the planet. Such activities must be built upon the foundation of ancient stories that tell how humans came to be in this place and how they must act within it.
Tumblr media
(pehonan by Tiffany Shaw-Collinge - video still by Conor McNally)
This installation is inspired by the idea of pehonan (Cree – gathering or waiting place)  and the oral traditions of Indigenous people as well as the many stories told of this area. It offers a space for teaching, storytelling, or performance. Conceptually, it references the oral roots of this place, and the ways in which stories change depending on proximity to the source. “The furthest back seat (at the top) references the deep past. It’s farthest from our reach when you are at the base, but when you are sitting at the top you have the greatest field of vision with perhaps the greatest perspective. When you sit on the lowest seat you are closest to the future, but not able to see to far into the distance.”
Tumblr media
(One of the four sculptures that comprise The Magpies’ Nests by Chai Duncan & Kevin Sehn - photo Doyle C. Marko)
Rossdale Linear Park is a slice of nature in in an urban setting. The Magpies’ Nests considers the complex interactions between humans and nature as well as the concept of “home”. The welded steel nests on top of four plinths relate to structures found in Edmonton. The pyramid references the Muttart Conservatory; the cube stands in for local industrial buildings relating to ideas of innovation and productivity; the pentagonal prism, or house -shape, represents dwellings found the surrounding community; the sphere represents the magpie’s own expertly built domed nest.
Tumblr media
(Night shot of Veil by Brandon McGillicuddy & Jeffrey Riedl at South Haven Cemetery - photo by Doyle C. Marko)
Veil  is a large fabric-like lattice of airy line work appearing to billow from the South Haven Cemetery Service Building’s rectilinear geometry. The artwork’s delicacy and flow elegantly compliments the design and materials of the building it inhabits, and is empathetic to the sensitive context of the cemetery. The imagery evokes medieval Vanitas, or memento mori paintings, which reflect on mortality, the vanity of life, and transient nature of existence. Cloth, or empty clothing, is used to represent absence and loss. Veil represents loss in a non-religious way.

Wild Raspberries.
By Reid Crowell.
Artist Judith Yates.
How clearly I recall the day we spent
Upon the canyon's tangled pathways where
White clouds banked high above the way we went
Beneath the aspens ' tinkle on the air .
I see again the wild raspberries ' glow ,
Like rubies hanging on their green - leaved vines ,
And their deep flavor , sweet and cooled by snow
That lay above the timberline of pines .
We thrust our hands into an icy stream
And kneeled to drink beside a boulder's face .
We stood together in the sun's thin gleam
And said that time itself could not erase
The earth - rich hour we had walked among Wild raspberries with their taste upon our tongue .

the trash is finally here ?? who would’ve thought ? not me that’s for damn sure. but anyway hello i’m gav ( she/her ) and this is my second time around in the rp and well let’s hope “the third time is a charm” doesn’t reign true in my case. anyway let me get on with telling you about these trash characters.
trigger warnings: attempted murder & kidnapping mention.
CINDY KIMBERLY, CIS FEMALE, SHE/HER — have you met antonia marie fonseca yet ? the eighteen year old is known for being both forthright and urbane, but also very disorganized and amoral. born in california, nia now lives in soho, being an instagram model.
born and raised in los angeles, california to a lower-middle class family.
their life was pretty normal, parents working paycheck to paycheck, money problems weighing heavily on her parent's minds but they never let their children know.
she's the middle child of three, with a younger brother and older sister. they were all very close, only being a year apart from each other.
things changed when she was fifteen and her sister had gotten into acting. it was a pilot for a new abc show and truthfully, nia didn't see it going anywhere. ( lmao she HOPED it wouldn't go anywhere ) but rip it was renewed for another season ( and three more after that ).
with her growing fame, came the jealously. jealously over the fact her sister was getting so much attention from her parents, fans, literally anyone you can think of. and because she couldn't control said jealously, she began to push her sister away and inherently because it was easier to deal with everything from a distance.
when she was seventeen, she took up "modeling" on instagram. ( because she's the self-proclaimed "hotter sister" ) and for the first time, she was the one getting the attention and she loved it.
she’s very impetuous. never really thinks twice about the things she says or does.
lowkey very insecure. tries to make up for it with copious amounts of sex. ( it never works )
decided to move to la when her sister had to move there as well for a movie role and just never left.
frequents her sister’s instagram .. any time she gets lower than 100k likes, nia posts another picture of herself as a “fuck you”.
HAILEY BALDWIN, CIS FEMALE, SHE/HER — have you met aspen clarice demerson yet ? the twenty-one year old is known for being both polished and gregarious, but also very vindictive and pugnacious. born in cheshire, aspen now lives in chelsea, tending to her modelling career.
she’s loosely based off once upon a time’s interpretation of cruella de vil ?? what a Mess already. like … THIS GIF is aspen demerson ??
is originally from cheshire ( shoutout to my main mans horton steels for the inspo ) so that makes her v british. if you hear someone with a heavy accent yelling about their louboutins getting scuffed then it’s probs her.
her mother and father were both from old money and made even more together with their business endeavors so she lived a very lush lifestyle—had parents, maids, etc that doted on her. she never had to worry about ONE thing.
some would think her lash lifestyle would have lead to her absolutely brattiness towards everyone growing up but nope, aspen just came out of the womb that way.
fr she treats her parents—who are ANGELS™—like trash and doesn’t think twice about it. actually she wonders why people try to scold her for it ??
can probably find her listening to greek tragedy by the wombats bc she’s that Bitch.
a v calculated person; knows what she wants and how to get it. if she wants something from you, she can play you and have it gone before you notice you’re playing into her scheme. if she doesn’t ?? you dont even exist to her tbh.
part of her sometimes wants to pull a lucrezia borgia and have a hallow ring she can use to poison the drinks of the ppl she hates the most .. maybe One Day.
v gray-romantic like she’ll fuq you but you never have to worry about her suddenly having feelings, her having feelings ( lol what are emotions, she asks ) is a rare occasion tbh.
basically she’s a soulless bitch who, if given the chance, would poison your drink and not think about it twice ( only to reminisce but to feel bad ?? nah )
LILY COLLINS, CIS FEMALE, SHE/HER — have you met samantha josefine gale ? the twenty-five year old is known for being both idiosyncratic and stoic, but also very stringent and distant. born in seattle, sam now lives in chelsea, working as a publicist.
currently twenty-five and working as a publicist to her twin sister, simini.
literally couldn’t care less about anything, if you were to tell her a joke she would just stare at you like |:
but that’s only because she’s spent so long forgoing any feelings about anything after her mother attempted to m*rder her sister.
it fucked with her brain a lot, especially the aftermath when simini went off the rails because of the altercation.
she kept her own emotions bottled up solely for simini’s sake, she didn’t want her sister to see her being Weak when she was already in a fragile state herself ( has to go to therapy weekly bc of this lmao and she’s also on antidepressants ).
she loves simini so much tho, would probs die for her but instead decided to take on the job of being her manager ( which really entails her cleaning up the messy things simini does so the public doesn’t find out ).
her sexuality is very up in the air atm. it’s something she thinks about rarely but when she does it’s a very confusing topic to her.
is probably silently judging you always with a straight face, waiting for an inevitable fuck up before telling you “i knew that would happen”.
has been a vegan since she was twenty. every time someone makes a backhanded comment she’s just giving them the |:< face.
honestly she’s just here to make sure her sister doesn’t make an entire mess of herself.
NINA DOBREV, CIS FEMALE, SHE/HER — have you met noelle isabella yates yet ? the twenty-five year old is known for being both audacious and jubilant, but also very reticent and turbulent. born in copenhagen, elle now lives in harrow, working as a waitress.
a twenty-five year old that was born and raised in copenhagen, denmark
life was “normal”, noelle being very close with all her siblings ( even if her two sisters were always butting heads ).
always the mom friend in every situation ever. could be drunk off her ass and she’s still offering you water, crackers and tylenol to make sure YOU’RE okay.
was attending university ( majoring in psychology ) when her sister, imogen, was kidnapped. the experience was very harrowing for her. she went from having a best friend and a sister to someone who had no idea who she was.
it’s what forced her to pack up, ask her parent’s for money and start backpacking through south american and then back through europe. meeting new people and seeing new places helped elevate the stress that came with the entire ordeal.
but when she was in ireland and after a night of partying, she woke up in a hotel room with a ring on her finger. she had no recollection of getting married or the person she had been married to. needless to say, she left the ring on the bedside table and fled. ( she’s technically still married, just chooses not to talk about them )
unfortunately has a vlog channel where she documented the entire time she was backpacking ( except the whole marriage thing )
after phoning her parents and finding out imogen had moved to london and opened her own business, she decided to visit her. it was only after spending a day with her she realized how much she had missed her and made london the last place she visited.
tried being vegan once ... it was terrible. which is ironic because she’s a waitress at her sister’s vegan restaurant. she tries not to think about that.
ANYWAY that’s it for now i think. i’m setting up a muse + plots page for all of them but if you would like to brainstorm pls free to hmu <3

Arrow Colorado Open Lab: How to bridge the OT/IT knowledge gap for end-to-end IoT solutions
Organizations benefit when teams from operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) collaborate. Their ecosystems benefit, too. But all too often, IT and OT operate independently in siloes that prevent the development of seamless end to end implementations and user experiences. At Arrow Electronics, we recognized this barrier to success. So we developed an approach to foster better relationships and understanding between our hardware and software providers. The Open Lab is an innovative approach that you may want to adopt for your own organization.
Arrow Electronics is a leader in technology and a pioneer in collaboration
Arrow Electronics is a global tech distributor that sells about 30,000 different kinds of IoT sensors through our e-commerce website. The manufacturers of these devices, the companies who buy them and the end users understand – each from their own perspective – the potential for applying these devices and the resulting data. As a result, the sensors appear in more and more scenarios. However, as the market grows, so does the opportunity for disconnects. We observed the knowledge and relationship gaps between the OT and IT communities that supply Arrow. So we took the initiative to bring these groups together to develop a collaborative process.
Our ultimate goal was to help customers in the Arrow value chain explore synergies in their network and develop powerful end to end solutions. IoT use cases which utilize hardware and software components to solve business challenges have been emerging steadily for at least a decade.
No one can do this on their own anymore, we realized. Hardware companies are collecting data we couldn’t have dreamed of collecting even five or ten years ago. Let’s bring people together because it’s rarely one solution that does the entire job.
With sponsorship from companies such as IBM, our team created the Open Lab. The Open Lab is a meeting place, a makerspace and engineering lab designed for collaboration and exploration.
The Open Lab stimulates discussion, promotes interdependence and produces results
Arrow and IBM launched the first in a series of Open Lab events focused on end to end IoT engagements. The lab itself echoes the great outdoors of its Denver setting. Its guests work against a backdrop of Aspen trees which are known for their interdependent root systems. Echoing this theme of interdependency and ecosystem, about 40 of our partners were invited to present offerings, demonstrate solutions and work through exercises that sparked discussion, fostered understanding and put opportunities and potential roadblocks on the table for discussion.
Michele Stern, IBM Managing Director and Arrow relationship manager, helped to kick off the event with her insight into the market and the sizable potential for partners. Stern told the participants, “IBM solutions cover 23% of the addressable IoT market. You have the potential to deliver on the remaining 77% of the $1 trillion market opportunity in IoT.”
As a result of these Open Lab sessions, Arrow’s OT and IT providers enjoy closer relationships, greater collaboration and a far more effective outcome. Our organization, ecosystem, and customers reap the benefits of the learning and activities in which they participated.
Honestly, I just want more of it. Bringing together all pieces of the ecosystem is critical to growing the market for all of us.
– Scott Yates, EDI
Arrow plans to hold quarterly events to facilitate more relationships between our software and hardware vendors who can deliver on the end to end future for IoT. If you’re interested in participating in an upcoming event, either by industry or use case, please contact Hannah Bettinger at [email protected].

Report: DOJ Inspector General Targeting Comey
According to a new report, Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz has compiled evidence that strongly suggests former FBI Director James Comey lied to President Trump when he told him in Trump Tower that he wasn’t the target of a criminal investigation. For more than two years, many have pondered why Comey hadn’t said anything publicly after it became clear he made that statement to the president privately. That would be because the FBI director was trying to build a conspiracy case against his boss—and at times, acted as an investigating agent in that case. RealClearInvestigations’ Paul Sperry reports two officials who have been briefed on the inspector general’s investigation of possible FBI misconduct told him that Comey was “running a covert operation” against the president. He also reported: “In addition to adding notes of his meetings and phone calls with Trump to the official FBI case file, Comey had an agent inside the White House who reported back to FBI headquarters about Trump and his aides, according to other officials familiar with the matter. “Although Comey took many actions on his own, he was not working in isolation. One focus of Horowitz’s inquiry is the private Jan. 6, 2017, briefing Comey gave the president-elect in New York about material in the Democratic-commissioned dossier compiled by ex-British intelligence officer Christopher Steele. Reports of that meeting were used days later by BuzzFeed, CNN and other outlets as a news hook for reporting on the dossier’s lascivious and unsubstantiated claims. “Comey’s meeting with Trump took place one day after the FBI director met in the Oval Office with President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden to discuss how to brief Trump — a meeting attended by National Security Adviser Susan Rice, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates and National Intelligence Director James Clapper, who would soon go to work for CNN.” If Sperry’s sources are correct, this would appear to implicate the previous administration at the highest levels, as well as the current 2020 frontrunner to challenge the president’s re-election bid. It also would create immense legal jeopardy for Comey. Already, Democrats are attempting to sabotage the inspector general’s work, beginning with House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff. The California Democrat told the Aspen Security Forum over the weekend that Horowitz was involved in a politically motivated plan to protect the president by attacking former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe. Schiff said: “The inspector general found that McCabe was untruthful. He may very well have been untruthful. I have no reason to question the inspector general’s conclusion, but that investigation was put on a fast track. It was separated from a broader inspector general investigation, which is still ongoing. Why was that done? It was done so he could be fired to not get a pension. It was done to please the president when the initiation of that investigation is tainted. So are the results of that investigation.” Schiff claims that Horowitz—who was appointed by President Barack Obama, not President Trump—rushed his conclusion of that investigation because the president “wanted it politically.” However, that’s not entirely accurate. The McCabe conclusions were released as part of a broader investigation of leaks within the FBI, which was concluded at approximately the same time. Horowitz is now concluding an investigation into whether the FBI and Justice Department violated any laws or department policies in issuing four FISA warrant applications and renewals to spy upon Trump 2016 campaign volunteer Carter Page. That investigation was requested by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Republican members of Congress in March of 2018. Schiff’s comments were in response to a question about U.S. Attorney John Durham’s “investigation of the investigation” that is looking deeply into the origins of the “Russia narrative” investigation of the Trump 2016 campaign. That investigation is expected to conclude in the coming months. (Photo Credit: U.S. Justice Department) source https://trunews.com/stream/report-doj-inspector-general-targeting-comey

Goodbye Grizzly Bear Spirit, Hello Big Boy Park!
Tumblr media
SCENE 1: In my car, Nov. 2, 2017
I am driving to my small town friendly Metro one sunny morning, tuned to CBC’s This Is That, one of my radio faves. It’s a satirical current affairs show “…that just doesn’t talk about the issues, it fabricates them.” (Or does it?)
I pull into the parking lot and grab my grocery bags. But then, although I am in a bit of a hurry, I decide I must listen to the first segment. It has already begun, and it’s too funny to miss. (Or is it?)
I turn up the volume. Texas billionaire Randall Walton-Yates plans to buy Mt. Everest so he can develop it and “make it more profitable.” The entrepreneur feels the iconic mountain is “sadly under-utilized.” I am already chuckling. This is going to be good. He plans to make it a family-friendly destination, complete with an airport, kids rides and hotels “so everyone can enjoy the view, snap a few photos, take grandpa to the top of Mt. Everest.” I bust out laughing. I can imagine Randall’s pot belly and cigar; his ignorant, affability.
When the interviewer posits that perhaps not everyone would welcome this, Mr. Walton-Bates says we only need to look at history. “What about Niagara Falls?” he says. “Before the infrastructure was there — nobody cared about it. Thanks to the casinos, souvenir shops, restaurants and hotels, look at it now! Same with Vegas and Florida.” The billionaire feels it is his duty to make the most of these iconic locations. By now I am hooting loudly and people walking by are staring to see if I am OK.
The Texas tycoon also plans a hyper loop vacuum tube system to whisk tourists to the top of Everest in mere minutes. I can hardly contain my merriment as I grab a grocery cart and head into Metro. Really! This Is That is truly brilliant. How do they come up with these nutty scenarios!
SCENE 2: The next morning.
As I munch toast and sip tea, I read the lead Globe and Mail story: Top court deals blow to Indigenous people. CAUTION:  If you are prone to blood pressure or heart issues, best not to read on. I, however, the proverbial moth to a flame, am compelled to continue.
The Supreme Court of Canada has given its blessing to private developers to build a honking huge ski resort in British Columbia on top of a sacred Indigenous site in the breathtaking Purcell Mountains — 6,000 hectares, including four glaciers, 5,500 tourist beds, 750 staff beds and 20 lifts. If this resort goes ahead, not only will the Ktunaxa Nation lose something deeply sacred to them, so will all Canadians, whether we are aware of it or not. We will have lost another sorry battle against greed and exploitation in spite of herculean efforts to preserve bears, beetles, birds, mountains, glaciers, old growth forest, biodiversity, silence, and yes, a place to worship our version of the Divine. How does that make you feel as a human?
The Ktunaxa Nation has spent more than 20 years arguing alongside other concerned Canadians against this lame-brain plan. Amongst many precious attributes, the development will destroy vital grizzly bear habitat, which means no more refuge for Grizzly Bear Spirit (Qat’ muk to the Ktunaxa peoples.) The Supreme Court — our Supreme Court — has upheld the developers right to get rich so that privileged people with big bucks can wile away their time on 6,000 hectares of once, wild, mysterious and spiritually blessed terrain.
I count myself as one of these privileged Canadians. I have money. I like to have fun. Probably our Supreme Court did not have me in mind when they said “tough shit” (I’m paraphrasing here) to the Ktunaxa Nation. But in case they did, I strenuously object. If I care to, I can go to Banff, Aspen, Whistler and endless other resorts. I do not need another trendy tourist destination, honest. Believe me, Your Honours, I am doing just fine.
Our Indigenous brothers and sisters are not, however, in case you haven’t noticed. Wouldn’t saying no way! to yet more bloated plutocrat developers (oops, that just slipped out) and billionaire playgrounds be a good thing for Truth and Reconciliation? Perhaps I am missing something here. But I think not.
I don’t have the brains that our big cheese judges do. But I do have some sense. Clearly the top court judges missed the pivotal course on how sacred wild spaces provide priceless advantages for every Canadian, whether we ever set foot on them or not. By accident they must have taken the fake lesson on how Canadians like me are yearning for yet another gazillion dollar whoop-de-do bucket list experience. These folks also clearly flunked the myriad lessons on how biodiversity works for the good of all, and how deeply connected that Indigenous peoples are to our land, its creatures and spirits. As Joni Mitchell once wisely warbled, by paving over paradise with a parking lot, we are severing their connection to the Divine and weakening the biodiversity web that keeps our planet turning. How does that make you feel about being Canadian?
Seven of the nine judges voted against granting special protection for religious freedom for Aboriginal peoples. Yup, you heard me. They ruled instead that a ski resort be planted on a site that is sacred to an Indigenous community.
Here’s another irony. The proposed project is called Jumbo Glacier Resort, named after one of the mountains and glaciers to be desecrated, er, developed. Meanwhile, our Texas billionaire pal, Randall Walton-Yates is still mulling over what he might name his Everest abomination. One idea that he is “partial to” is Big Boy Park. “This is the biggest mountain on earth and this is where the Big Boys come to have their fun,” he chortles. Amen.
Jumbo Glacier Resort is far from fait accompli, however. All is not lost, according to Wildsight, a Canadian charity protecting humans, wildlife and wilderness in the Columbia and Rocky Mountain regions. On their Jumbo Wild website, they state “We stand with the Ktunaxa in their continued fight to defend their sacred territory. This group, along with other strong partners, have been working to keep the wild in wilderness for more than 25 years. I’ve donated — maybe you will too? Check them out at www.keepitwild.ca

BREAKING: Sally Yates Drops Cold, Hard Truth Bomb On Trump, She Will Not Be SILENT
Sally Yates, the former acting Attorney General under Trump, had some choice words for the president at a recent event. She says the bar has been set too low for Donald Trump already.
Yates recently spoke at the Aspen Ideas Festival, and she used her time to talk at length about what she saw in the Trump White House. Yates also shared her own story of working with Trump—a time period that turned out to be pretty brief.
As Yates told the crowd, she found out about Trump’s travel ban after the New York Times broke the story on their website.
Trump penned his travel ban almost immediately after taking office, as he promised he would do numerous times on the campaign trail. Yates found herself in a car juggling her iPad looking for a copy of the executive order the day Trump issued it.
She was just returning from the White House, where she had attended a meeting about then-National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.
Yates, who was part of the Obama administration, refused to enforce Trump’s travel ban. “I was not comfortable that it was in fact lawful or constitutional,” Yates said.
The day Yates told the Justice Department she could not enforce the travel ban, Trump fired her from her position. She has since been joined by James Comey, the former FBI Director, and Preet Bharara, a New York U.S. Attorney. Trump fired them both in the months after he fired Sally Yates.
Yates spoke out about Trump at the festival, and had some comments about the ongoing investigation into the president’s foreign ties.
She briefly spoke about special prosecutor Robert Mueller, who is leading the Senate Intelligence Committee Investigation into Trump and his administration. Yates pointed out that Mueller “is going to be deciding whether or not crimes were committed, to be used for prosecution or impeachment.”
But Yates also stressed that we should expect more from our nation’s leaders. “Surely that’s not our bar,” Yates said. “That’s not the standard of conduct we’re looking for from our president or our administration.”
“It shouldn’t just be whether you committed a felony or not. It should also be whether or not you’re observing the kind of norms that we’ve been talking about that are so essential to, really, the fabric of the rule of law.”
Coming from a former attorney general, those words are pretty powerful indeed. Yates is, essentially, asking whether or not Trump has already done enough to warrant impeachment.
And she’s not the only one asking that question. Trump’s policies have been shockingly bad. He has insulted America’s allies, he has compromised national security, and he is draining the Secret Service budget to the point of concern.
Meanwhile, he’s already tried to impose a Muslim ban and has loosened regulations against dumping coal waste into groundwater. Do we even need a Russia connection to make a move against this man?
POLL: Do you agree with Sally Yates?
Sally Yates is right. We should expect more from our leaders than what Trump has delivered so far.
Should Donald Trump face impeachment for everything he has already done? Vote in our poll to share your opinion!
Sally Yates saw the Trump administration from the inside, and she sees the ugliness and corruption, too. Share this story on Facebook, and share her comments!

‘What the heck is this thing’: Sally Yates describes how she found out about Trump’s travel ban
 AP Photo/Steven Senne
Former acting attorney general Sally Yates discussed the “compressed period of time” in which she found out about President Donald Trump’s first travel ban, at the 2017 Aspen Ideas Festival on Wednesday.
“I was in the car on the way to the airport … and I had actually just finished a meeting at the White House on what’s now known as the Mike Flynn situation,” Yates said. “I got a call from my principal deputy … [who] says, ‘You’re not going to believe this, but I was just on the New York Times website and it looks like the president has instituted some sort of travel ban.'”
“That’s how we found out about it at the Department of Justice: read about it on the Internet,” Yates said. “I’m on my way to the plane, I’ve got my iPad, I’m furiously going on there trying to figure out what it is.”
“I’m literally going online to try to find a copy of the executive order so we could get some sense of what this was,” Yates continued. “So over the course of that weekend, it was a whole lot of trying to figure out ‘What the heck is this thing, and to whom does it apply?'”
Trump’s first draft of the travel ban went into effect in January, shortly after he was sworn in. The ban, met with confusion from legal experts and fierce opposition from immigration advocates, was struck down by several federal courts that cited Trump’s rhetoric during his presidential campaign and past statements made on Twitter.
As a holdover from President Barack Obama’s administration, Yates was ultimately dismissed after refusing to enforce Trump’s executive order, to which she coined as “not grounded in truth.”
“We gathered all of the folks who were involved in this … Read More Here...

There are facts here that should be alarming to us as a country that fall short of facts that establish a basis for impeachment or prosecution
