i feel like we could move forward as a fandom if we all understood that the only way the Targaryens are significantly different than any other noble house in Westeros is brother/sister incest and dragons. that’s literally it. not defending brother/sister incest or war crimes dragon edition but it really annoys me when people stumble across problems in house targaryen that are there because they are endemic to all noble houses in westeros because the patriarchal feudal system is in fact bad and then act like they’ve discovered something. “House Targaryen is rotten, every second son live sin his brother’s shadow and daughters are just seen as walking wombs” oh buddy wait until i tell you about ned stark and lysa tully. “they conquered westeros they’re colonizers descended from the evil slave owning valyrians” ah yes as opposed to the starks who ruled over the north for 8,000 years with the power of friendship and democratic election, descended from the andals who very politely asked the children of the forest to leave their land

btw sorry for the recent asoiaf blogging. long story short i got dragged into a house of the dragon watch party (it was. bad.) and i thought to myself "hold on. asoiaf may be a Series, but i don't remember it being this terrible." and then i bought the audiobooks for free online for free legally because i realise that i read all of them when i was 15 and the opinions i formed were very 15-year-old opinions. so anyway i'm doing like 48 simultaneous dna extractions while listening to ned stark desperately trying to rub two brain cells together and complete that fucking punnett square and yeah. its certainly a Series.

they used to ask me. ask me during the tv show craze. asked me "whos your fav character" and id proudly say "petyr baelish" and they all laughed at me and threw tomatoes at me which i picked up and ate because im dalmatian and i like tomatoes. i said "he will be a contender for the throne he even namedrops the book title thats so cool". my mother decided to put me up for adoption due to my views she wrote to the national newspapers and all. i withstood all the mockery with iron will and i said "he will play them all because all of you, just like everyone in westeros, think him a fool" and they said "is something wrong with you" and i said "all of you will eat dirt off my boots when you see what happens in the next season, theyre running out of books". then the last seasons got made and then everyone laughed at me and i stoically said (while holding back tears) "nobody here can laugh at me because we are all clowns. go and tell me who your favourite character is lets see what happened to them" and they shut up and realized all of us talking about got was embarrassing anyway. and i said "grrm will surely write another book you will see" and they said "ok grandma lets get you to bed" and i said "listen he is going to be up in the final stretch he is gonna lie cheat steal mansplain manipulate and not manspread i guess because he is kinda weak and small and any other character could crush him including women so um" and they said "grandma he is a minor character and he really sucks as a person and is a cunt and a practically slave-owner with terrible brothel practices also really creepy in general like he was straight up trying to stick his tongue in cats mouth while lysa was there and isnt his obsession with sansa really creepy i mean hes out there seducing teens and calling them their moms names" and i said "how is his morality relevant to his importance as a book character that set the plot in motion and how does any of this make him less interesting to read"

A Clash of Kings, Catelyn III thoughts

Stannis and Renly's confrontation at Storms End happens here, and there's so much to look at in the chapter but what's really hitting is that Stannis is dressed pretty plainly but with the ornaments of a king - crown sword and belt - and his sword is described as having a huge square cut ruby on the hilt

Renly on the other hand is 'splendid', he's in velvets and silks, his horse is delicately picking her way around obstacles, and his sword isn't mentioned. His sword belt is though, and has 'jagged chunks of black diamond'

And it's so good that little details like the gems they wear are telling us about their preparedness for war.

Stannis has a square cut ruby on his sword hilt, firm, strong, determined, and Renly's diamonds haven't even been properly cut.

i know i’m truly invested in a work when i start getting pedantic. one time i saw a post jokingly describing Daenerys walking into the funeral pyre as a tenth grader’s suicide attempt and it ground my gears because 1) she knew she wasn’t going to die and 2) she’s an EIGHTH GRADER

really i think the red wedding is perhaps one of the best moments in modern literary history because its soooo much more than just that one scene ive said it once and ill say it again nothing in asoiaf is a complete and utter shock twist everything is foreshadowed like being woven into a great tapestry of everything that happens. the red wedding is foreshadowed so much you feel it looming over every narrative involved and i really do believe the cultural consciousness of the spoiler that it will happen improves the reading for the red wedding. you know that sickening feeling that everyone here involved is doomed and there's nothing youu can do to stop it. daenerys's vision of a king with a wolf head surrounded at a feast of the dead a whole book before it even takes place. the emphasizing of how you should never ever ever ever violate the laws of hospitality its a crime against the gods and catelyn continuing to push that they should eat first no more matter what. the legend of the rat cook and the gods anger over it. and then you realize not only is the red wedding a tragedy but it is just the beginning and a narrative device that will span every house involved and their downfalls. it is by design that tywin lannister plans it and he's dead by the end of the same book along with his grandson. oh red wedding you will always be famous i love you so dearly and i cannot wait to read the fabulous horror of the demise that lord walder frey will meet

The Frey kids needed gameboys

Big walder can get pokemon red and little walder can get pokemon blue

Bran gets yellow and names his pikachu Summer (idr if you can actually name your pikachu in yellow)

They connect them up to pokemon stadium and they can give Rickon a controller that isn't plugged in, none of this 'mayhaps' business, holy fuck
