Felipe & Letizia’s decade: Trips Abroad
F&L Decade 44/??
King Felipe and Queen Letizia paid an official presentation trip to Morocco between July 14 and 15, 2014. They were accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, José Manuel García-Margallo; the director general of International Economic Relations, Fernando Eguidazu Palacios; the general director for the Maghreb, Africa, the Mediterranean and the Middle East, Manuel Gómez-Acebo Rodríguez-Spiteri, and the general director for the Coordination of Common Policies and General Affairs of the European Union, Alejandro Abellán García de Diego.
Upon arrival at the Rabat-Salé Airport, they were received by His Majesty the King of Morocco Mohamed VI, His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid and His Royal Highnesses the Princesses Lalla Salma, Lalla Meryem, Lalla Asmae and Lalla Hasnae.
After receiving honors, Don Felipe, accompanied by the King of Morocco, and Doña Letizia together with Princess Lalla Salma, were escorted by a squadron of the Royal Cavalry to the Plaza del Méchouar, where the Royal Palace of Rabat is located. The welcoming ceremony consisted of the interpretation of the National Anthems with 21 salutes of the ordinance, a review of the troops and the presentation of the official delegations.
The meeting between Their Majesties the Kings and His Majesty King Mohamed VI and Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Salma took place in the Throne Room, after which Mohamed VI presented Don Felipe and Doña Letizia with the Necklace "Wissam Al Mohammadi" , the highest distinction granted by the Kingdom of Morocco. Subsequently, in a private meeting, Mohamed VI informed Don Felipe, among other things, of the signing of the fishing agreement between the European Union and Morocco, blocked since 2011, and which will allow Spanish fishing vessels to fish in Moroccan waters.
At night, at the end of the Ramadan fast, at the exact time of sunset, a dinner ("ftour") was held in the gardens of the Royal Palace of Rabat in honor of the Kings by Mohamed VI, to which attended by Princess Lalla Salma, Crown Prince Moulay Hassan, Princesses Lalla Meryem, Lalla Asma and Lalla Hasna, the head of the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco, Abdelilah Benkirán, and the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, as well as more than 300 guests. At dinner, the two families spoke in Spanish, a language that the Alawite monarch speaks fluently, as do his brothers.
On Tuesday, July 15, at the Al Soussi Guest Palace, Don Felipe received in audience the head of the Moroccan Government, Abdelilah Benkirán, the president of the House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi Alami, and the president of the House of Councilors, Mohamed Cheikh Biadillah. At the hearings, the King was accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, the Spanish Ambassador to Morocco and the general directors of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Subsequently, Their Majesties the Kings moved to the Mausoleum of Mohamed V. In the Main Chamber, they placed crowns before the tombs of His Majesty King Mohamed V and His Majesty King Hassan II.
In the afternoon, Don Felipe and King Mohamed VI inaugurated the Hospitality and Tourism Training Center and visited the Women's Capacities Training Center.
In parallel, Her Majesty the Queen and Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Salma, accompanied by the Moroccan Minister of Health, visited the Lalla Salma Foundation Cancer Prevention and Treatment Center, which focuses its activities on breast cancer.

KOL Restaurant, Seymour Street, English Commercial Interior, UK Architecture Development, Interior Design
KOL Restaurant on Seymour Street
10 Dec 2020
KOL Restaurant
Design: A-nrd studio
Location: Seymour Street, London, England, UK
Former Noma chef Santiago Lastra opens debut restaurant KOL, appointing A-nrd studio led by Alessio Nardi and Lukas Persakovas to curate its interiors.
Spanning over two-storeys and four-hundred square metres in London picturesque Seymour Street, KOL’s main dining room is situated past the reception on the ground floor while the chef’s table experience and the Mezcaleria bar can be found downstairs.
KOL interior design focuses on bringing to life the spirit of Mexico through materiality, craft and inherent humbleness.
To consolidate the look of KOL, A-nrd studio founder Alessio Nardi went on a field trip throughout Mexico – from Mexico City to Oaxaca to the Yucatan – to connect with local businesses and discover the nuances of Mexican culture.
Upon entering KOL, customers are greeted by a large-scale corn husk marquetry artwork by Fernando Laposse which frames a bespoke hand-chiselled oak reception desk. The interior architecture of KOL is deeply inspired by the work of Luis Barragán where stucco walls on different hues characterise the space. The colour palette is an ode to the streets of Mexico, alternating between various shades of yellow, pink and burnt orange.
These contrast the floor made of concrete slabs framed by a double run of oak planks – an interpretation of the flooring outside Mexico City’s library.
Three kitchen islands positioned in the centre of the restaurant create a theatrical yet homey focal point in KOL’s dining room. Each oak wood unit is crafted with hand-chiselled counters that extend to the ceiling through reclaimed elmwood canopies.
Next to kitchen islands, the stucco wall splits in height to reveal the heroes of KOL kitchen – the fire pit and the comal oven. Handmade British clay tiles clad the whole area, evoking the traditional Mexican Tezontle volcanic rock tiles in the true spirit of KOL: Mexican soul, British ingredients.
A burnt orange stucco wall with an extensive installation of Mexican artefacts sourced during the field trip and dating back to the mid-1900s creates an earthy backdrop for the kitchen theatre.
KOL’s range of furniture has all been created bespoke by A-nrd studio in collaboration withmartisans in Italy and the UK – tear sheets in the attachment. The whole furniture collection focuses on subtle detailing and natural materials, a nod to the modernist aesthetic found throughout Mexico.
The tables are a mix of honed silver travertine stone and oak wood which has been hand-planed to add tactility. The stone tabletops seem to be floating, with accentuated interlocking leg details. The oak wood chairs also present the same hand-planed finish and sleek leather upholstery while the window benches are more of a sculptural piece with travertine block bases and a suspended leather backing.
The descent to the Chef’s table and Mezcaleria bar is characterised by a raw steel and oak spiral staircase, enveloped by a faceted glazed screen with hand-blown glass in clear and amber tones. Hanging clay lamps and planters by Mexican artisans accentuate the height adding tonal depth to the drum.
The chef ’s table dining room is inspired by modernist Mexican mansions with raw textural materials and a Wabi aesthetic. The floor to ceiling concrete finish is interrupted only by a reclaimed parquet floor runner and the oak glazed frames which look into the private kitchen and a patio with an installation of lush greenery.
The bespoke tables by A-nrd studio continue the language of the interior architecture. Two hand-planed oak planks are merged by a central concrete runner to create a sectional sharing table for up to 22 guests. Four long hexagonal pendant lights with corn husk marquetry shells hang above the central seating area to light up the dining room – a collaboration between Fernando Laposse and A-nrd studio.
Next to the chef’s table, the lively Mezcaleria bar brings a Mexican coastal vibe to London.
The extensive use of natural materials – reclaimed wood flooring, bespoke caned booth seating, seagrass lights – add warmth to space and contrast the monolithic concrete bar with reclaimed oak beam inserts.
Both the Mezcaleria and the Chef’s table are punctuated by selected artworks – alternating Mexican folk art and contemporary British crafted objects in true KOL ethos.
KOL Restaurant, Seymour Street – Building Information
Interior Architecture and Design: A-nrd studio
About A-nrd studio A-nrd studio work spans from interior to furniture design with a focus on creating effortless spaces that feel intimate and familiar with as little imposition as possible.
Milanese designer Alessio Nardi founded A-nrd studio in 2015 after working for an array of international talents including Jeff Koons, Peter Saville, Lee Broom and Tord Boontje.
Long time friend and collaborator Lukas Persakovas permanently joined the studio in 2018 after years of experience at top European design studios leading projects such as Tate modern retail space and Galeries Lafayette.
A-nrd studio design approach appreciates the important bond between the commercial and conceptual aspects of each project and product with a focus on sustainability: from valorising existing features of a space and utilising eco-friendly materials to mixing vintage pieces and supporting skilled artisans that hand make their creations in small batches.
Some of A-nrd studio works include South London acclaimed restaurant Kudu, Portuguese eatery Casa do Frango and Asma Khan’s Darjeeling Express featured in Netflix’s Chef s Table.

TIME Hotels to open five new properties across Middle East in 2019
TIME Hotels, the UAE-headquartered hospitality company and hotel operator, is set to announce plans to open five new properties across the Middle East during 2019 – as it targets 35 properties by 2025.
The properties, which will see the growth and launch of existing as well as new TIME Hotel brands to key territories throughout the region, will be unveiled during Arabian Travel Market 2019, which takes place at Dubai World Trade Centre from 28 April – 1 May.
Mohamed Awadalla, CEO TIME Hotels, said: “Our pipeline of hotels and residences meet the demands of multiple value-driven markets by offering a high-quality experience right across all of our branded properties.
“We currently have 15 properties in operation across the UAE and wider GCC with new additions in Dubai, Sharjah and Saudi Arabia scheduled for this year as well as extending our presence to Egypt – further supporting our strategic business plan to increase our total portfolio to 35 properties across the Middle East by the end of 2025.”
TIME Hotels will debut its TIME Express Hotels brand with the opening of a property in Sharjah, during the third quarter of 2019. The three-star TIME Express Hotel Al Khan will feature 55 keys in total and is located 15 minutes from Dubai International Airport, 20 minutes from Sharjah International Airport and a 15-minute walk from Al Khan Beach.
In Dubai, TIME Asma Hotel is scheduled to open during the second quarter of 2019. The four-star property, located in Al Barsha, will feature 232 rooms including 12 suites, a gym, swimming pool, jacuzzi, four meeting rooms, a business centre and two restaurants.
“Plans are in place for two floors of the hotel to be reserved exclusively for female travellers, with dedicated services, including: personalised room service, a female-only check-in counter, dedicated ladies-only guest relations, in-house baby-sitting services, and in-room tablets highlighting all of the services offered for women as well as enhanced bathroom amenities in each room,” said Awadalla.
Meanwhile, TIME Hotels’ international openings in Saudi Arabia and Egypt demonstrate the brand’s strength and popularity in markets outside of the UAE.
TIME Hotels opened its second property in Saudi Arabia at the beginning of April. Featuring 28 deluxe apartments – comprising four one-bedroom units and 24 two-bedroom units – TIME Dammam Residence is located 35 minutes from King Fahad International Airport and just minutes from various shopping and dining destinations in Dammam.
Joining TIME Dammam Residence in the kingdom will be TIME Golden Tower Al Khobar. Scheduled to open August 2019, the 65-key property will be strategically located on Al Khobar Main Street and within close proximity to Al Khobar Waterfront. The property will feature a roof-top garden lounge, a gym and a high-tech business centre.
In Egypt, TIME Nozha Beach Aqua Park Hotel & Resort will open its doors during Q3 2019. The four-star property – located in Ras Sudr, on Egypt’s Red Sea Coast – will feature 52 rooms and four suits as well as five castles, 93 villas, 891 chalets and 136 studios.
Located along a 945 metre stretch of white sand beach, the resort will feature the largest aqua entertainment complex in Ras Sudr, complete with various water slides, wave pools and water sport activities.
Awadalla, said: “This is a very exciting chapter in TIME Hotels’ short history as we open TIME Nozha Aqua Park & Resort, our first beach resort and first property in Egypt. Built with leisure and adventure visitors in mind, this resort is fully-equipped with everything the modern traveller requires for the perfect family getaway.”
These scheduled openings follow the signing of a new management agreement by TIME Hotels Management to operate Dunes Hotel Apartments’ three properties located throughout Dubai.
TIME Hotels took over day-to-day operations of TIME Dunes Hotel Apartment Al Barsha, TIME Dunes Hotel Apartments Al Qusais and TIME Dunes Hotel Apartments Oud Metha following the signing of the agreement on 24th January 2019.
“It has been a busy year for TIME Hotels with a raft of properties announced with several of them due to come online within the next 12 months. We have been very strategic with our openings, identifying and assessing the demand within the market and implementing the most suitable brand from the TIME portfolio, that best matches that demand and we’re looking forward to bringing more properties into our portfolio,” added Awadalla.

Taste Your Way Through London With an Expat Who Knows Her Stuff
We've partnered with VisitBritain to bring you delicious ideas on what to do, see—and of course, eat—in London, and beyond! Stay tuned for more travel tips to help you plan your very own British adventure.
I moved to London after nearly a decade in New York City, and I wasn’t sure any city could live up to the Big Apple (typical New Yorker mindset!). But in the nearly two years I’ve lived here, I have totally fallen in love with London's incredible diversity of people, places, flavors, and activities. Three of my favorite places at the moment—especially for taking guests visiting from out of town—are:
Tom Brown’s restaurant Cornerstone (named after his favorite Arctic Monkeys track), in an edgy, hipster area in East London called Hackney Wick. Cornerstone serves food worthy of the many awards it’s received. For anyone who holds the outdated notion that British food isn’t good, Tom’s food will shatter that thought. Tom is a young superstar in the London food scene, having launched Cornerstone after he won England’s admiration on Great British Menu and after working under famed British chef Nathan Outlaw. Originally from Cornwall, a part of England on the coast and surrounded by fresh seafood, Tom’s specialty is fish. Cornerstone’s menu is dictated by the markets—what’s the best produce today?—so it’s constantly changing, sometimes even hour to hour. While the dishes may rotate, one thing is steady: His food will be fresh, thoughtfully prepared, and absolutely delicious. Cornerstone 3 Prince Edward Road Hackney Wick, London

Asma Khan’s restaurant Darjeeling Express in Soho’s foodie haven of Kingly Court. London’s diversity is one of its greatest assets, and Darjeeling Express is the perfect example of that—it’s an Indian restaurant that will redefine how you think of Indian food. Asma herself is a force of nature! She has a law degree and a PhD but ultimately followed her passion to run a popular London supper club for five years, which led to the opening of Darjeeling Express. It has been welcomed into the London dining scene with much fanfare and acclaim. Originally from Calcutta, Asma makes food from her roots and draws on family traditions in many recipes. She is determined to represent the underrepresented and foster community among people too often overlooked, which is why she employs all women of color in her kitchen. She’s a special person to have in the London food scene, and I have no doubt she’ll win over hearts around the world when she’s featured in the next season of Netflix’s Chef’s Table—the first Brit (not to mention that she’s a British woman of color) to be featured! Renegade London Wine, founded by Warwick Smith, an urban winery in East London’s Bethnal Green area. It’s in an incredibly diverse neighborhood, and my favorite thing about imbibing at Renegade is where it’s located: Turn into a narrow alley, past a used furniture shop, and arrive at the hidden wine haven. All of the wines are hand-harvested and vinified in that space, and sipping your wine by candlelight, serenaded by a funky, hipster playlist and among barrels of fermenting wine is, simply put, awesomely fun. They’re also making English sparkling wine (I love me some bubbles!!); it’s the first Champagne method made in London. They’ve only made 800 bottles of the stuff, and it is truly some of the most delicious sparkling wine I’ve ever had. (Who would’ve thought you could find that just past an old pleather sofa in an alley?! I love London.) Renegade London Wine Arch 12 Gales Gardens, London

Those are just a small handful of my favorites!
