You’re wrong about the vote goal being a good idea. Most readers HATE IT when an author does that, and some even stop following (like I will be doing now).

If you’re struggling to update it’s ok! Just update when you can, don’t pressure yourself, but doing vote goals? That’s not the way to go.

I completely understand that vote-based updates aren’t for everyone, and if this system doesn’t align with your preferences, you’re absolutely free to follow or unfollow as you see fit. No hard feelings. But I do want to challenge the mindset behind this reaction because, frankly, it speaks to a much larger issue in how people engage with creative work online.

There’s a widespread, unspoken expectation that writers, artists, and creators should produce free content indefinitely, without question, without boundaries, and without reciprocity. And any time a creator asks for even the smallest form of engagement—literally just clicking a button—it’s met with resistance, as if the mere suggestion of mutual appreciation is unreasonable. But why?

The reality is that engagement fuels visibility. Notes, votes, and comments don’t just boost motivation; they determine whether a story even gets seen. Algorithms across every platform reward interaction. When readers choose to consume without engaging, it directly impacts how far that story reaches and whether the creator’s work continues to be recognized at all. So when an author implements a goal-based system, it’s not about “demanding” engagement—it’s about aligning effort with actual interest. If people are excited about a story, that enthusiasm should naturally be reflected in interaction. If it’s not, then that’s useful information for the writer to shift focus elsewhere.

So let’s be clear: this isn’t about entitlement on my part—it’s about breaking the expectation that creators should labor endlessly for an audience that refuses to engage. If someone feels that engaging with the stories they enjoy is a burden, that’s something to reflect on, because it extends beyond fandom spaces. This is the same mindset that devalues artists, underpays freelancers, and treats passion-driven work as something that “shouldn’t require compensation.” Just because fanfiction is free doesn’t mean it’s worthless.

And just because I love writing doesn’t mean I should be expected to pour endless hours into it without seeing any tangible support in return.

That being said, I genuinely don’t want to cultivate a space where that one-sided, take-only mindset thrives.

If supporting something you enjoy—through the smallest action—feels like too much, then this probably isn’t the right space for you. I want to build a space where appreciation is mutual, where excitement is shared, and where the effort I put in is met with enthusiasm rather than silent consumption. If that’s not something you agree with, then I wish you well with creators whose approach aligns more with your expectations.

Whos your favorite Y/N? Are any of them based on you ? If not, how would your interactions with them go ?

Roo, listen, you just asked me a simple question, and now I’m about to go on a TED Talk because apparently, I cannot answer anything concisely. Buckle up.

So, do I have a favorite Y/N? No. I love them all. They’re all complex, and I put a lot of thought into their personalities, backstories, and how they navigate their worlds. I don’t do cookie-cutter female leads—I don’t have a copy-paste personality that I just slap into different settings. If you’ve read more than one of my fics, you’ll know that my Y/Ns are very different from each other.

Take Kkangpae and Fuck Me Up Y/Ns, for example. At first glance, they seem similar—they both have sharp tongues and don’t take bullshit—but when you actually look at them, they’re completely different. Phoenix (FMU Y/N) is impulsive, immature, and a little reckless, which makes sense because she’s coming from a controlled environment. This is her first taste of true independence, and she’s allowing herself to do whatever she wants just because she can. So yeah, sometimes she’s frustrating. That’s the point. She’s messy. I write messy. I write realistic. If my characters frustrate you, good. That means they feel real.

Meanwhile, Kkangpae Y/N? She’s not like that. She’s emotionally intelligent. She knows when to push and when to back off. She understands that some things aren’t worth the battle. If Jeon tells her no, she listens. That’s the difference. Phoenix pokes and prods just to see what happens, but Kkangpae Y/N moves with intent. And that’s why I probably relate to her the most. She’s quick-witted, sarcastic, and she’s got strong boundaries, which is something I highly value. I would 100% vibe with her.

Now, the hardest Y/N for me to write? Hands down, The 25th Hour Y/N (Noma). She’s so analytical and intelligent, and my brain is just… not like that. My thoughts are all over the place. She’s methodical, logical, and incredibly detail-oriented, while I have to force myself to stay on track when I write her. That being said, I do relate to her curiosity—she needs to understand things, and she’ll go to great lengths to do so, which I admire. But overall, she’s just on a different wavelength from me, and that makes writing her a challenge.

As for my interactions with them?

• Kkangpae Y/N? We’d be besties. We see eye to eye.

• SATMH Y/N? I respect her ambition and maturity, but I think we’d clash because we’re both strong-willed. We’d make a killer duo in group projects, though—unstoppable force meets immovable object energy.

• FMU Y/N? I’d enjoy her mess from a safe distance. She’d be that friend who’s always texting me about the stupid shit she got into, and I’d be like, girl, why are you like this?

• OL Y/N? I’d like her, but I wouldn’t get too close. She needs a lot of reassurance, and I don’t have the emotional energy to be someone’s full-time therapist. I’ve been the “fixer” friend before, and I’m not doing that again.

• 25H Y/N, Noma? I’d be intrigued by her, but I don’t think we’d be close. She’s too logical, and I get disappointed when people aren’t emotionally perceptive. Like, if you can’t read a room, I’m not explaining it to you.

At the end of the day, all my Y/Ns have a little piece of me in them. It’s inevitable. As much as I try to make them distinct, I’m still writing from my own perspective. Some have my impulsiveness, some have my sarcasm, some have my deep-seated need to overanalyze everything. They’re all just different shades of me, scattered across different personalities and stories.

Anyway, this turned into an essay. I hope that answers your question lmao.

Now, onto your writing conundrum! First of all, I FEEL YOU. Putting something so personal out there is terrifying because it's like throwing your soul into the void and hoping the void claps instead of throwing it back at your face. But here’s the deal: the void is mostly full of other writers who feel the exact same way, so they’ll GET IT.

Tags are your best friend—use relevant and popular ones for visibility. Example: if you’re writing a Jungkook fic, make sure you use ‘jungkook x reader’ ‘jungkook fic’ ‘jungkook fanfic’ and such, rather than ‘BTS’ or ‘jungkook’. Updating consistently (or faking it) helps too—even if you're slow, a semi-regular schedule keeps engagement up. If you have a buffer, you can post on a schedule. If not, I just lie to myself and pretend I have one.

Interacting with readers is key. People are more likely to keep up with a fic if they feel connected to the author. Be unhinged in the replies. It works. Your title and summary also matter more than we’d like to admit—a good summary doesn’t just explain the plot, it sells the vibes. Think of it like the fanfic equivalent of a thirst trap. And honestly? Be shameless about promotion. AO3 doesn’t have an algorithm, so cross-posting on Twitter (X? Ew.) or Tumblr can help.

I… do not have a beta reader, because I live on the edge. Also, I have trust issues (and ADHD, which means I reread my own chapters 50 times and still miss typos). If you want one, the best way to find them is through Discord writing groups, AO3 writing circles, or just screaming into the abyss on social media and seeing who responds. Some beta readers are just proofreaders, while others give in-depth feedback on plot, so find someone who matches your needs.

Basically, DO IT. Post the thing. Be brave. Be delusional. Even if people don’t vibe with it the way you hope, it’ll find its audience. And if all else fails, remember: even the messiest, typo-ridden, borderline-feral fics have dedicated fans. We are an unhinged species, and we love what we love.

I am literally THE WORST PERSON to use as a reading standard, I promise you. I'm that horrible picky reader that can't enjoy anything because my brain is like "but what if we overanalyzed EVERYTHING instead of having fun?" Like, I hate myself for being like this because I miss out on SO MUCH good content just because my brain decides to malfunction over formatting.

I'm the exception, not the rule! Your fics are amazing and loved by so many people and here I am being that one gremlin in the corner who can't read them because my brain goes ERROR 404 over capitalization. That's a ME problem, not a YOU problem.

Trust me, I am NOT the reader you want to model your choices after. I can't even enjoy my own fics half the time because my brain is like "but what if we rewrote this entire chapter at 3AM because one sentence feels weird?" I'm literally in my own personal hell of perfectionism (￣︿￣)

V moves like water, flowing around your escape attempt like he knew exactly what you'd do. Before you can blink, you're eating dirt, his weight pinning you down. The gun barrel presses cold against your forehead, and you realize just how badly you miscalculated.

"Not bad, dear." His grin makes your skin crawl. "But not good enough."
